David Hockney: A Bigger Picture Tim Barringer, Edith Devaney, Margaret Drabble, Martin Gayford, Marco Livingstone and Xavier F. Salomon An exuberant and visually arresting study that redefines David Hockney’s achievements as a landscape artist David Hockney CH RA has always been closely associated with California, where he has lived for much of his life. This major study of his work redefines him as an important painter of the English countryside, presenting his recent landscapes for the first time. For the last decade Hockney has been based in Yorkshire, where he has returned to painting in the open air, observing the scenery with honesty and intensity. These works convey the drama and splendour of nature and the pathos of our relationship with it, an age-old subject treated by Hockney with a modern and spirited eye, often informed by his interest in

Sanctuary Britain’s Artists and their Studios Edited by Hossein Amirsadeghi • Executive Editor: Maryam Homayoun Eisler • Contributors: Iwona Blazwick, Richard Cork and Tom Morton • Photography: Robin Friend A stellar cast of artists opens their studio doors
607 colour illustrations 32.0 x 25.0cm 600pp ISBN 978 0 500 977071 March
£48.00
From Botticelli to Bacon, artists have always invested their personalities in their studios, but these spaces, often containing the visible remains of artistic ingenuity, toil and torment, usually remain resolutely private. Sanctuary gives rare and privileged access to the studios of 120 of Britain’s greatest living artists at work today, both in Britain and abroad. This lavish book brims with specially commissioned photographs – portraits, the artists at work, places of inspiration – and incisive interviews. The artists open their minds as much as their studio doors, voicing their thoughts on all aspects of the contemporary art world, and giving a vivid sense of what it means to be an artist at work today. Iwona Blazwick offers an A-Z of studios with a twist, while Richard Cork’s Studio Visits presents a tour around the studios of Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley and others. Tom Morton’s Field Notes on British Art in the Third Millennium is an intelligent sketch of the wider ‘wilder’ world that all artists now inhabit. Hossein Amirsadeghi’s recent titles include Frozen Dreams, New Vision and Art & Patronage. Maryam Homayoun Eisler was executive editor of Art & Patronage. Iwona Blazwick is Director of the Whitechapel Gallery. Richard Cork is an art critic, broadcaster and curator. Tom Morton is a writer and curator. Robin Friend is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. Art 5

Some time before his death, Lucian Freud (1922–2011) spent seven months painting a portrait of the art critic Martin Gayford. Here, Gayford describes the process chronologically, from the day he arrived for the first sitting through to his meeting with the couple who bought the finished painting. As Freud creates a portrait of Gayford, so the art critic produces his own portrait of the notoriously private artist, recounting their wideranging conversations and giving a rare insight into Freud’s working practice. The book is illustrated throughout with photographs by David Dawson of Freud at work, with paintings by Freud from the 1940s to the present, and images by other artists discussed by Freud with Gayford. The result vividly conveys what it is like to be on the inside of the process of creating a painting by a great artist.

A Treated Victorian Novel Tom Phillips The fifth edition of Tom Phillips’ perennially popular book, published to coincide with the artist’s 75th birthday ‘Utterly original, delightful and idiosyncratic’ David Lodge In the mid-1960s Tom Phillips took a forgotten nineteenth-century novel, W. H. Mallock’s A Human Document, and began cutting and pasting the extant text to create something new. The artist writes, ‘I plundered, mined and undermined its text to make it yield the ghosts of other possible stories, scenes, poems, erotic incidents and surrealist catastrophes which seemed to lurk within its wall of words. As I worked on it, I replaced the text I’d stripped away with visual images of all kinds. I began to tell and depict, among other memories, dreams and reflections, the sad story of Bill Toge, one of love’s casualties.’ After its first publication in book form in 1980, A Humument rapidly became a cult classic. This new fifth edition follows its predecessors by incorporating revisions and re-workings – nearly eighty of the pages in the 2005 edition are replaced by new versions – and celebrates an artistic enterprise that is over 45 years old and still actively a work in progress.

The New Artist/Artisan Relationship Michael Petry New in paperback, the first book to highlight and explore the way artists collaborate with artisans and craftspeople to realize their work ‘Glorious’ Harper’s Bazaar Can an artist claim that an object is a work of art if it has been made for him or her by someone else? If so, who is the ‘author’ of such a work? And just what is the difference between a work of art and a work of craft? The Art of Not Making tackles these questions head on, exploring the concepts of authorship, artistic originality, skill, craftsmanship and the creative act, and highlighting the vital role that skills from craft and industrial production play in creating some of today’s most innovative and highly sought-after works of art. Interviews with artists and craftspeople, including Chris Burden, Louise Bourgeois, Matthew Barney, Grayson Perry, Mona Hatoum and Ai Weiwei among many others, offer further insights into their creative collaborations. This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in contemporary art, crafts, and the debate around what it means to make art. Art 9

A Monograph Richard Leeman Available again, the definitive monograph on Cy Twombly ‘A serious and detailed account of the artist’ The Art Newspaper Cy Twombly (1928–2011) defies easy categorization. Subverting traditional distinctions between painting and drawing, brush and pencil work, written words and images, he made a highly individual contribution to 20th-century art. In his canvases, turfs, swirls, twig bundles, ideograms and ornamental motifs confront one another in implied narrative; biomorphic entities resembling orifices, polyps, fringes or erupting effluvia conjure a protean sexuality; delicate cross-hatchings and tracery interacting with graffiti or detached letters and words evoke multiple associations. This monograph interprets Twombly’s huge and complex body of work through a close study of his pictures, following both a thematic and chronological progression from the late 1950s to his final years. From a scrawl to a drawing or a word, Twombly’s deeply sophisticated work is an articulation of the language of memory and desire, from a place in which painting, drawing and writing merge into a single entity.

Rainer Metzger A brilliantly illustrated survey of swinging London – the perfect book for those who wish they’d been there, or for those who were there and want to remember it Just what was it that made sixties’ London so different, so appealing? Powered by the three key elements of youth, affluence and the mass media, the city was the hub of pop culture, with its bold and creative spirit attracting an international roster of artists and luminaries in all fields, from pop music and fashion to literature and the visual arts. While a new aristocracy of rock stars and trendsetters ruled the roost, Pop Art took a witty and detached view of contemporary consumerism, and architecture looked towards a utopian future. This vibrant book paints a kaleidoscopic portrait of sixties’ London. It features a stellar cast of characters from every cultural arena, including David Hockney, Francis Bacon, David Bailey, Alan Aldridge, The Beatles, Peter Blake, Mary Quant, Diana Rigg, Bridget Riley and many more, all presented in context and showing how they contributed to a city at the epicentre of a cultural boom that was heard around the world and whose echoes still resonate today. The Complete Graphic Work T. G. Rosenthal An updated and much expanded edition of one of the most outstandingly produced art books of the modern era Many of the greatest artists since Dürer and Rembrandt have used the print medium to explore some of their most important ideas. Paula Rego is in this tradition, giving full rein to her imagination in both etching and lithography, and using the media with exuberance to create work that is as disturbing, erotic and powerful as her paintings. This sumptuously produced book, now greatly expanded and updated, discusses and illustrates all Rego’s prints, including unpublished work. The second edition includes chapters on five new series – Moon Eggs, Prince Pig, Wine, Curved Planks and Female Genital Mutilation; on the influence of Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s work on Rego; and an updated section of Works Out of Series. T. G. Rosenthal discusses the background to each series, and quotes extensively from his and others’ conversations with Rego, underlining her subversive humour and her strongly feminist outlook. A fully illustrated catalogue raisonné and a description of Rego’s etching techniques by the artist Paul Coldwell make this a unique source of information on a major aspect of this leading artist’s work.

817 illustrations, 703 in colour 27.5 x 22.4cm 680pp ISBN 978 0 500 238868 January
The most important new textbook on the subject in a generation – essential reading for undergraduates and the interested general reader This book introduces Italian Renaissance art in the form of an easy-tofollow, chronological survey. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, it makes new approaches accessible to students and non-specialist readers, telling the story of art in the great centres of Rome, Florence and Venice while profiling a range of other cities and sites throughout Italy. This new history presents the classic canon of Renaissance painting and sculpture in full, yet expands the scope of conventional surveys by offering a more thorough coverage of architecture, decorative and domestic arts, and print media. Rather than emphasizing artists’ biographies, the authors concentrate on the works, discussing means of production, the places for which images were made, the concerns of patrons, and the expectations and responses of the works’ first viewers. Renaissance art is seen as decidedly new, a moment in the history of art whose concerns persist in the present.

Others show creative approaches to traditional or proven media such as paper, stone, concrete and steel. The ingeniously crafted and thought-provoking results range across a broad spectrum, from intimate paper collages to large public sculptures constructed from discarded wood. Structured to provide both a complete course on advertising and a quick reference on particular topics, it covers every aspect of the business, from how to write copy, to how agencies work and the different strategies used for all types of media. This new edition features a substantially expanded chapter on interactive advertising, and the book as a whole features some fifty new illustrations of recent campaigns. Pete Barry outlines simple but fundamental rules about how to ‘push’ an ad to turn it into something exceptional, while exercises throughout will help readers assess their own work and that of others. Fifty years’ worth of international, award-winning ad campaigns – in the form of over 400 ‘roughs’ specially produced by the author – also reinforce the book’s core lesson: that a great idea will last forever. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at the V&A, here is the first comprehensive monograph on one of the world’s most innovative designers of three-dimensional objects Still just two decades into his career, British designer Thomas Heatherwick has been heralded as one of the most original creative talents for many years. He has produced everything from sculptural chairs forged from the world’s largest aluminium extruder, to a bridge that rolls open and closed, and an exuberant seed bank, ‘hairy’ with fibre-optic lights. This book is the first to present an exhaustive survey of his studio’s output to date: over 140 projects. Long in development, it has been prepared in close collaboration with Heatherwick himself, offering a highly personal, in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at all aspects of Heatherwick’s creative, design and manufacturing processes. Projects are organized chronologically and bookended by an introduction setting out the studio’s philosophy and a reference section. Each project is fully illustrated and accompanied by a text explaining, in Heatherwick’s own words, the design question it posed and the creative and practical processes used to address it.

Top shelf reading: the first ever illustrated publication on bookshelf design One might have presumed that, with the advent of the e-book, the days of the bookshelf were numbered. In fact, readers are now taking almost as much interest in the furniture that houses their libraries as the books themselves; if the titles in your collection are a reflection of your personality, then so too is the design of your bookshelf. From the conceptual ‘Read-Unread Bookshelf’ (which weighs books read against those still to be started) to the multi-function ‘Trick’ (a unit that transforms from shelf-space into a table and two chairs), Bookshelf is full of furniture to covet and inspire. Over 200 inventive and experimental shelving designs are presented in over 300 colour illustrations. Alex Johnson, author and editor of ‘The Blog on the Bookshelf’, provides a fun and informative look at the history of the bookcase, as well as reflecting on how a new generation of designers has re-imagined a classic. Bookshelf will find a captive audience among book-lovers and design enthusiasts alike.

Josephine Ross A classic book, now available in a sumptuous paperback edition after having been many years out of print Cecil Beaton (1904–1980) was a man of dazzling charm and style, and his talents were many. At the age of twenty he sent Vogue an out-of-focus snap of an undergraduate play, and for the next half-century and more he kept readers of the magazine up to date with all the various activities of his long and creative career. In his twenties he recorded London and New York society in needle-sharp words and drawings, and then, at Condé Nast’s insistence, in photographs. The resulting work earned him a place among the great chroniclers of fashion. He designed settings for plays and films, and as a writer he was an eloquent champion of stylish living. The turning point in his career came with the Second World War. His photographs, drawings and writings revealed the face of conflict, from bombed London to China and the North African Desert, and showed a new maturity of vision. Here, Josephine Ross selects and introduces articles, drawings and photographs by Beaton dating from the 1920s to the 1970s. Beaton loved Vogue, and his contributions testify to the wit, imagination and professionalism that the man and the magazine always had in common.

Michael Jacobs Photographs by Hugh Palmer A new compact edition of this magnificent tour of Provence and its villages ‘The photographs of simple churches, fountains, shady squares and cobbled lanes demand leisurely observation … beautiful. Highly recommended’ Library Journal Provence is a land apart, a territory of outstanding beauty and distinction that has fascinated outsiders since earliest times. It is in its smaller communities that the true Provençal spirit can be found: in brilliant sunlight falling across the tightly grouped terracotta roofs, or in the velvety shade beneath great plane trees in an ancient square – the country of Marcel Pagnol and Jean de Florette. This book takes the reader through the whole region, beginning with the villages of Vaucluse and the Bouches-du-Rhône, then moving east through the Var to the mountains of the Alpine départments and its fortified hill villages, drawing together the area’s special characteristics and bringing them to life in Hugh Palmer’s radiant photographs and Michael Jacobs’ evocative accounts of the most beautiful villages in the best-loved French province.

A sumptuous celebration in words and photographs of the fascinating riches of heritage fruits and vegetables Fruits and vegetables have been a central part of our diets since time immemorial. The history of their cultivation is ripe with fascinating facts: Thomas Becket planted the first fig in Britain in the mid-12th century; Henry VIII introduced the apricot to England; Samuel Pepys’s diary entry for 22 September 1663 reveals that ‘Mr Newhouse is dead of eating cowcumbers’ (cucumbers). A staggering number of our traditional cultivars have vanished in the past century, a catastrophic loss of horticultural heritage. However, a dedicated band of growers around the world is seeking to conserve those that survive. Presented by season for growers and seasonally minded cooks, and published in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society, this beautifully produced book surveys heritage fruits and vegetables in entertaining stories and rich, painterly photographs. No one interested in food, plant cultivation or history will fail to be captivated by this glorious tribute to the foods we so often take for granted.

Today’s artists, sculptors, designers, architects and gardeners explore age-old vernacular materials, skills and sites to produce extraordinary landscape art that affirms an ideal of partnership with nature while celebrating layers of living in this multifaceted region. The first illustrated guide to the elevated park in New York City that has transformed our idea of urban escape Thirty feet in the air, rebuilt and planted on one-and-a-half miles of abandoned, elevated railroad track snaking through Manhattan’s West Side, the High Line has turned the dream of escape offered by most urban parks inside out. It has become one of New York’s most popular sites, attracting millions of visitors in the couple of years since it opened. Its stunning gardens, which wend between warehouses and apartment buildings in one of the world’s most vibrant contemporary art districts, have transformed the neighbourhood. On the High Line is an engaging, friend-at-your-side guide to everything that a visitor sees when strolling through the park: the innovative gardens and their thousands of plants from around the world; the architecture, both old and new; and a neighbourhood whose lively history includes the Titanic, the Manhattan Project, S&M clubs and the Tenth Avenue Cowboy. This book captures like no other the countless details that make a walk along the High Line such an unforgettable experience.

An elegantly presented exploration of the ways in which new technologies are changing concrete and the ways in which it is used ‘ We must remember that everything depends on how we use a material, not on the material itself... New materials are not necessarily superior. Each material is only what we make it’ Mies van der Rohe Concrete Ideas: Material to Shape a City is about possibilities in concrete architecture. It speculates and shows, through a series of montages, drawings and photographs, concrete architecture’s capacity as an urban catalyst, its potential for defining cities and for virtuosity in urban renewal. With contributions from architects and thinkers such as Mark West, George Baird, Will Bruder and Charles Waldheim, among others, Concrete Ideas offers a seductive argument for the reconsideration and reclamation of this age-old building material.

Nordic Light Modern Scandinavian Architecture Henry Plummer Henry Plummer is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Surveys the use of natural light in Scandinavian building The quality of light in the higher latitudes has given rise to some of the most important and influential architecture of the modern period. In the Scandinavian countries, in particular, the ethereal nature of light combined with natural resources and highly refined building techniques, not to mention the stark seasonal contrast between the scarcity of light in winter and the ever-present glow of long summer days, have provided the context for architectural acts of genius. This book celebrates established icons, newly discovered gems and contemporary masterworks that represent the highest expression of Scandinavian design and response to their environment. Nearly fifty projects are featured in detail, ordered according to the way in which different light conditions have imparted particular qualities on the buildings. Henry Plummer treats his subject with a uniquely authoritative perspective in which his words resonate directly with his artfully taken images.

This one-of-akind survey of 46 international projects, compiled and written by leading experts on architectural mathematics, offers a thorough overview of how recent developments in maths and physics are being applied to architecture in accessible illustrations, lucid text and hands-on experience. An in-depth survey of a unique vernacular architecture: its history and traditions, its present and future Just as bamboo is central to many forms of Asian vernacular constructions, so is palm leaf at the heart of the United Arab Emirates’ architectural heritage. For centuries, palm leaves have been used in ingenious ways across the Gulf region to create habitable structures, a technique often referred to as Arish. This indigenous technique is, however, being gradually subsumed by slick contemporary architecture imported from the West. This book, the product of a three-year research programme, provides a comprehensive survey of palm-leaf architecture. It contains five sections: an overview in historical photographs; a comparison of regional variations in the United Arab Emirates; a focus on architectural and stylistic details; contemporary applications of palm-leaf architecture; and a resource section, including a step-by-step introduction to the making of Arish, from raw material to built form. Arish: Palm-Leaf Architecture is a glorious celebration of this wonderful craft tradition, and will provide readers with the foundation for a genuine understanding of the region, critical in the context of its fast-developing global economy. A Vocabulary of Modern Architecture Adrian Forty Available again, a classic study of the complex relationship between architecture and language The words we use when we talk and write about architecture describe more than just bricks and mortar – they direct the ways we think of and live with buildings. This groundbreaking book is the first thorough examination of the complex relationship between architecture and language as intricate social practices. Six rigorously argued chapters investigate the language of modernism, language and drawing, ‘masculine and feminine’ architecture, language metaphors, science in architecture, and the social properties of architecture. There follows a vocabulary of key words such as ‘Character’, ‘Form’, ‘History’ and ‘Space’, locating each word’s modern meaning within an historical and theoretical framework, and setting out clearly its development and relevance for architects, historians, philosophers, critics and the users of the buildings themselves. Words and Buildings is a wholly original book that has changed and enriched the way we think and talk about architecture. It is essential reading for anyone concerned with modern architecture and culture.

Out of Practice Introduction by Philip Nobel An insider’s look at one of architecture’s most cutting-edge firms SHoP, the prominent New York-based architectural practice, is at work on numerous projects – multistorey housing, academic building and master plans – totalling $2 billion around the globe. They have not achieved such success by keeping within the traditional structure of architectural firms. The partners look outside the profession for inspiration and ideas, keeping in line with their mission to create real-world architecture that considers how design, finance and technology can work together. This volume explores five of the firm’s ideologies – practice, politics, finance, sustainability and technology – in essays by the partners. Thematic sections, each introduced by a pointed question, explore SHoP’s processes and preoccupations in a series of short texts. Thirteen major projects, including the pioneering Dunescape at P.S. 1 in Queens and major projects for the East River waterfront in New York, are shown in detail. This unique organization will allow readers to understand the firm’s work and business strategies, as well as provide ideas to improve their own building projects. Architecture 65

The Story of Creation According to Sacred Geometry John Michell with Allan Brown John Michell’s final book, now available in paperback ‘A delightful book: clear, witty, beautiful and illuminating. It is well worth buying for yourself – and for your friends’ The Spectator Galileo described the universe as a large book written in the language of mathematics, which can only be read by those with knowledge of its characters – triangles, circles and other geometrical figures. In How the World is Made, John Michell explains how ancient peoples who grasped the timeless principles of sacred geometry were able to create flourishing societies. His illustrations reveal the secret code within these geometrical figures and how they express the spiritual meanings in the key numbers of 1 to 12. He identifies the various regular shapes and shows their constructions; their natural symbolism; their meetings, matings and ways of breeding; and their functions within the universal order. In the process, Michell helps us see the world in a new light. Disparate shapes and their corresponding numbers are woven together, resolving themselves into an all-inclusive world image – that ‘pattern in the heavens’, as Socrates called it, ‘which anyone can find and establish within themselves.’

Linklater examines how the new Scottish Parliament has fared and discusses significant events such as the controversies over the Holyrood parliament building, devolution and the transfer of taxation rights from Westminster, and the release of the Lockerbie bomber, as well as the fallout from the 2008 global financial crash and the debate about Scottish independence. Written with wit and scholarship, this book remains the definitive volume for anyone seeking to disentangle the complex story of Scotland from the earliest times to the present.

A Short History Norman Stone New in paperback, a virtuoso performance from the bestselling historian Norman Stone ‘Stone’s irreverent narrative is a spur to read more about a forgotten power that is central to Europe’s history’ The Financial Times From the eminent historian Norman Stone, who has lived and worked in the country since 1997, comes this concise survey of Turkey’s relations with its immediate neighbours and the wider world from the 11th century to the present day. Stone deftly conducts the reader through the story, from the arrival of the Seljuks in Anatolia in the eleventh century to the modern republic applying for EU membership in the twenty-first. At its height, the Ottoman Empire was a superpower that brought Islam to the gates of Vienna. Stone examines the reasons for the empire’s long decline and shows how it gave birth to the modern Turkish republic, where east and west, religion and secularism, tradition and modernity still form vibrant elements of national identity. Norman Stone draws out the larger themes of Turkey’s history, resulting in a book that is a masterly exposition of the historian’s craft. History 71

Over eighty life stories throughout time and across the globe The exploits of the famous never cease to captivate our imaginations – rulers, artists, explorers, and all the great personalities of history. Yet many quieter lives also have the ability to impress, to teach us something about the remarkable qualities of human nature. In this book, Robert Aldrich presents a fascinating portrait of gay men and women throughout history that reveals the full diversity of gay lives as lived in their times. He gives a voice to more than eighty people from every major continent and from all walks of life, from poets, philosophers and artists, to saints, gangsters and activists. Alongside such celebrated names as Michelangelo, Frederick the Great and Harvey Milk are lesserknown but no less surprising individuals: two men of ancient Egypt whose lives were closely linked over 4,000 years ago; a flamboyant maharaja, who liked to have his way with retainers; and ‘Aimée’ and ‘Jaguar’, whose love defied the death camps of wartime Germany. Often colourful, occasionally tragic, but all in some way extraordinary, these life stories reflect – and have sometimes helped to shape – contemporary attitudes towards same-sex intimacy. History 73

The Story of Michael Ventris Andrew Robinson New in paperback, the life story of Michael Ventris, interlaced with that of his decipherment of Linear B ‘Excellent: well researched and clearly presented … compelling reading’ The Times Literary Supplement Linear B is Europe’s oldest readable writing, dating from the middle of the second millennium JK. First discovered in 1900 on clay tablets among the ruins of the Palace of Minos at Knossos, Crete, it remained a mystery for over fifty years until Michael Ventris discovered that its signs did not represent an unknown language as previously believed, but an archaic dialect of Greek, more than 500 years older than the Greek of Homer. Dubbed the ‘Everest of archaeology’, the decipherment was all the more remarkable because Ventris was not a trained classical scholar but an architect by profession, who had first heard of Linear B as a schoolboy. An initial fascination became a lifelong obsession for this intriguing and contradictory man, a gifted linguist but a divided soul. This book, newly available in paperback, tells not just the story of Linear B but that of the ‘modest genius’ who broke the code.

Cracking the Egyptian Code is the first biography in English of Jean-François Champollion, the impoverished, arrogant and brilliant child of the French Revolution who made the vital breakthrough in deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphs. This finely illustrated account charts Champollion’s dramatic life and achievements: by turns a teenage professor, a supporter of Napoleon, an exile, a fanatical decipherer and a curator at the Louvre, he lived life to the full but drove himself into an early grave. It is a dramatic tale, full of romance and adventure, genius and skulduggery, deftly written by Andrew Robinson, a world authority on writing systems and decipherment, and an acclaimed biographer. His full-blooded account brings the man, his setbacks and his ultimate triumphs vividly to life.

A witty and fact-packed guide to the samurai class of early modern Japan, presented in the guise of a training manual written by a fictional samurai lord… Young samurai, do you wish to obtain the martial skills to master the Way of the Warrior? The strategic know-how to lay siege to a castle? The Zen-like composure to conduct a tea ceremony? The bravery to face not just fearsome opponents but exploding cows and other weapons of war? If so, this is the book for you. It is 1615 and the Japanese samurai, at the zenith of their military might, are about to join their last great battle at Osaka Castle. The shogun of Japan has commissioned his grand chamberlain, Umawatari Bogyu, to write a manual that passes on sage samurai wisdom to a new generation of this noble warrior class. This is the premise of Samurai, which in a lively and engaging style covers every aspect of early 17th-century Japanese warrior culture, from training and armour to how to perform on the battlefield, from Japanese religion to how to attain entrance to the White Jade Pavilion when your warrior days are over.

Christopher Chippindale A newly revised and enlarged fourth edition of this prizewinning book brings the story of Stonehenge right up to date ‘A standard reference work’ Aubrey Burl, The Times Literary Supplement Since its prize-winning first edition, Christopher Chippindale’s book has established itself as the classic account of this most famous of ancient places. For hundreds of years Stonehenge has been both an enigma and an inspiration to archaeologists, tourists, mystics, astronomers, poets and visionaries alike. The real monument has been illuminated by their insights, but more often obscured by their imagined versions of Stonehenge. For this new edition, Christopher Chippindale describes the startling ideas and insights of the latest field research. In a radical reinterpretation, Stonehenge – with its cold rocks – is seen as the place of the dead, and another site – over the horizon – as the place of the living, built in wood, and complete with houses and paved ways. In another theory, Stonehenge is a place of healing. Alongside the quest to understand the ancient place are the taxing practicalities of caring for a monument that is 4,000 years old, and never designed to cope with a million visitors a year. Preserving Stonehenge for the millennia to come is now the challenge.

A brand-new approach to reading hieroglyphs by a proven expert and teacher Most books on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs cover the subject in either too little depth, explaining merely how to write your name, or in too much depth, covering the intricacies of grammar in bewildering detail. This book takes an entirely fresh and accessible approach, introducing its readers to the basics of the language without being offputting or underwhelming. Bypassing the trying technicalities of grammar, Bill Manley clearly explains the mysteries of hieroglyphs without jargon or technical terms, guiding the reader step by step through real-life, unaltered texts from stelae, tombs and portable objects. Readers will see their knowledge grow as they are led through the inscriptions, supported by full explanations and translations. Engaging text and fact boxes bring to life the monuments of high officials and kings, while specially commissioned line drawings present the texts clearly and elegantly, alongside photos of monuments from international museums. Integrating the archaeological evidence into its broader historical, cultural and social context, Richard Neer suggests new ways of thinking about fundamental subjects, such as the relationship between art and politics and the evolution of style. Well-known works of art are presented alongside less-familiar pieces, together with architecture, fortifications and settlement patterns, expanding the range of material discussed. Recent discoveries are included, such as an astonishing Minoanstyle bull-leaping fresco from Egypt, while quotations from ancient texts provide first-hand testimonials from the Greek world. Boxes address illuminating topics and controversial issues, and numerous photographs, maps, plans and chronological charts enliven and support the text. Archaeology & Ancient History 81

A fresh, fast-moving new account of the rise and fall of Roman Britain, told through the lives and exploits of its chief protagonists Roman Britain was created not by impersonal historical forces, but by men and women, each driven by ambition, aspiration and passion. The Romans Who Shaped Britain explores the narrative of Britannia through the lives of its emperors, commanders, governors, officials and rebels. This rich cast of characters includes some, such as Caesar, Agricola and Boudica, who may be familiar; and others, such as Carausius, Magnentius or Valentinus, who deserve to be more so. Their lives and actions are set against the backdrop of an evolving landscape, in which Iron Age shrines were being replaced by marble temples, industrial-scale factories and granaries were springing up across the countryside and a triumphal arch towered into the Kent sky to mark Rome’s domination. Pacily written, vivid and compelling, The Romans Who Shaped Britain, by setting out the story as a single narrative, reminds us above all of the truly epic nature of the history of Britannia.

Andy Warhol’s charming animal drawings, now available again after some years out of print It was 1953 when, not long after arriving in New York City, a young artist named Andy Warhol had begun to make his way in the world of commercial illustration. As Arthur and Teddy Edelman, his former employers, relate in their introductory note, ‘In a hallway of the Empire State Building, outside a shoe manufacturer’s office, stood a young man with Jackson Pollock shoes, a rumpled black suit, a portfolio, and a shock of white hair.’ Over several years, the Edelmans and Warhol worked closely together. Their relationship culminated in a colouring book that could only have come from the mind of Warhol, created specially for clients’ children for Christmas in 1961, and something of a cause célèbre when it was published in 1990. Now back in print, A Coloring Book: Drawings by Andy Warhol will amuse and charm a new audience with its delightfully carefree menagerie.

Magnum Contact Sheets The Collector’s Edition Edited by Kristen Lubben Here is an exceptional opportunity to own a piece of Magnum’s history. But you’ll have to move quickly – the standard edition of Magnum Contact Sheets sold out within weeks of publication in October 2011, and The Collector’s Editions are following suit. No more covetable collectibles have ever been produced. Each clothbound copy is packaged in a presentation case, and includes an individual 16 x 12” contact sheet selected from a series of 10, with each contact sheet printed in editions of 50. Each contact sheet is numbered, embossed with ‘Magnum Photos Collection’ on the white border, and handstamped with the photographer’s copyright on the verso. Produced to the exacting demands of Magnum’s own print room and with the approval of the individual photographers or estates involved, these contact sheets provide an exceptional insight into the creation of truly great photographs.

Cyclepedia for iPad A Tour of Iconic Bicycle Designs Developed in partnership with Heuristic Media Michael Embacher Foreword by Paul Smith Heuristic Media is based in London and Los Angeles. The company was created in 2011 by Toby Evetts, Simon Reeves, Richard Loncraine and Patrick Uden. Michael Embacher runs his own design studio in Vienna. Sir Paul Smith is one of the world’s leading fashion designers and an avid cyclist.
Based on the bestselling book, Cyclepedia for iPad is a highly interactive app that brings to life 100 iconic bicycles designed over the past ninety years, from classic racing bikes and high-tech aerodynamic machines, to eccentric bicycles and sought-after rarities. Featuring a wealth of enhanced content, such as specially commissioned animations on the mechanics of the bicycle, additional photographs and graphics, and off-beat video clips, the app allows users to spin bikes through 360˚, explore design details through a high-definition zooming function, ‘fold’ and ‘unfold’ all collapsible bikes, browse all bicycles by year, weight, material, type or country, and discover a few other surprises, too! Available in the app store now, Cyclepedia for iPad is the perfect gift for the growing number of cycling, design and iPad enthusiasts the world over.
