SOMETIMES A REPLICA CAN MAKE US LOOK EVEN MORE CLOSELY AT THE ORIGINAL THAT INSPIRED IT. The small painting on the far left was made by the artist Francis Alÿs. Alÿs lives in Mexico, where brightly colored, hand-painted adverts are common, and he invited two local sign-painters to copy and enlarge his original. He encouraged them to change and improve his painting as they wished. What alterations have they made? And how does the presence of the two copies in Alÿs’s *installation* change how we look at the original?
