What is “America”? What does it look like? Where can it be found? What does “America” mean and for whom? This ambitious publication does not attempt to present a comprehensive photographic history of the United States but uses the stories and photographs in the Magnum Archive to offer potential answers to those questions. In doing so, it presents a compelling visual portrait of the USA, past and present, as it stands once again at a crossroads of history.
Magnum America is arranged into decade-by- decade chapters from the 1940s to the present day. Each chapter includes individual “Moments” capturing that decade; deeper views through “Collective Portfolios” where multiple Magnum photographers documented a major historic event; and long-form, story-led individual portfolios that examine issues, peoples, and events as portrayed by Magnum photographers. Commentaries and texts appear throughout and there are innovative metadata visualizations based on the Magnum archives, highlighting the multiple voices and perspectives that define both Magnum and the United States.
The book looks beyond the fifty states to invite us to consider the concept of “America as Empire,” with military and political adventures and misadventures abroad, including Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as soft power and “America” as a cultural export.
Breathtaking in scope and abundant with the photographic riches and intelligent, insightful authorship for which Magnum’s photographers are renowned, as well as texts by Professor Laura Wexler alongside other contributing writers, Magnum America is a vital contribution to the documentation of contemporary American history and a future classic.
Magnum Photos, the world’s most prestigious photographic agency, was formed in 1947. Peter van Agtmael is a Magnum photographer. His books include Look at the U.S.A., Sorry for the War , and Disco Night Sept 11. Laura Wexler is Charles H. Farnam professor of women’s, gender & sexuality studies and American studies, Yale University.

The 1980s were a time of bold exploration, dazzling creativity, inspiring unity—and stark division. Technology, media, gender roles, race, sexuality, geopolitics, climate, our place in the universe. You name it: the 1980s saw almost all aspects of humanity challenged, upturned, and reimagined. From partying to parting, travel back in time to the tipping point of recent history with this era- defining book: the ultimate cultural mixtape. Skip forward from the first space shuttle to the first episode of The Simpsons, from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Gordon Gekko, or from shoulder pads to smiley faces. This immersive visual narrative tells the story of the 1980s through all its recurring motifs, trends, and themes, from lush tropicana to neo-noir dystopia.
Start with the innocence of breakdancing and boom boxes on the subway, the beeps and bloops of the new electronic game consoles, and Jane Fonda’s pastel leotards and legwarmers. Move on to the savage materialism of the wolves of Wall Street, the synchronized moves of the zombies in the Thriller video, and tailored Armani suits. Witness the rise of a new and assertive gay culture and explore the darker corners of the club scene. Remember the silent rise of the AIDS epidemic, the explosion of the Live Aid concerts, and the fight against apartheid. Listen to the reverberation of cultural decibels rising across the globe until all the walls start to break down, from Madrid’s La Movida to the Soviet perestroika and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Few would dispute that Banksy is the most famous urban artist in the world today. That he is also a perceptive art historian might come as a surprise to many. Taken together, the myriad memorable works the street artist has created over the course of the past thirty years constitute an audacious commentary on the history of image-making—a captivating critique waiting to be pieced together.
Armed with little more than stencils, spray paint, and an anonymizing cloak of after-hours darkness, Banksy has forged an alluring identity for himself as an incorrigible prankster who doesn’t embrace tradition, but shreds it. Consider Banksy and you think of grubby city walls far removed from elite galleries and privileged museums where art is conventionally shown. What actually illuminates Banksy’s audacious murals, impromptu urban sculptures, and vandalized paintings, however, is a profound understanding of the story of art.
Through the dark satirical lens of Banksy’s mischievous reimagined masterpieces, art history is viewed a new and brought into unexpected focus. From his droll lampooning of the Lascaux cave paintings to reinventing Monet’s enchanting water lily pond, a reboot of Géricault’s tragic, gut-wrenching vision to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring now instilled with street cred, everyone’s genius is grist for his unmerciful mill. Far from being diminished in their significance, however, the works that Banksy ruthlessly parodies are ultimately refurbished by the ordeal. Banksy’s iconoclastic works force us to rethink our affection for and appreciation of great works of art that define cultural history.

The story of David Hockney is one of passion: passion for seeing, passion for telling, passion for images. But to these should be added passion for life. Hockney’s art is a celebration of what it is to be alive. All his pictures— sometimes tender, as when he draws close friends and family; sometimes playful, as in his paintings of lazy, carefree days at the pool; sometimes awe-inspiring, as with his monumental images of the Grand Canyon— convey what it means to be in the world, to see it, to move in it, to love it.
This constant exploration of how to communicate such feelings through art emerges with particular clarity in this stunning, lively volume, now updated to include recent works which have been selected and organized by Hockney personally, and track his lifelong experiments in ways of looking and depicting.
David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century. He has produced work in almost every medium— painting, drawing, stage design, photography, and printmaking— and has stretched the boundaries of all of them. His previous books include David Hockney’s Dog Days and Hockney’s Pictures, as well as his books in partnership with Martin Gayford, including A History of Pictures: From the Cave to the Computer Screen and Spring Cannot Be Cancelled: David Hockney in Normandy. He continues to create and exhibit art, and to inspire enormous affection and admiration worldwide.

“I’ve always been a looker that’s what artists do.”
This anthology of quotations by the artist David Hockney follows in the successful format of The World According to series. Ranging across topics including drawing, photography, nature, creativity, the Internet, and much more, The World According to David Hockney offers a delightful and engaging overview of the artist’s inimitable spirit, personality, and opinions.
From everyday observations—“The eye is always moving; if it isn’t moving you are dead”—to artistic insights such as “painted color always will be better than printed color, because it is the pigment itself,” as well as musings on other image makers, including Caravaggio, Paul Cézanne, and Walt Disney, David Hockney has a knack for capturing profound truths in pithy statements.
Born in Bradford, England, in 1937, Hockney attended art school in London before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s. There, he painted his famous swimming pool paintings, and since then has embraced a range of media, including photocollage, video, and digital technologies. In a 2011 poll of more than one thousand British artists, Hockney was voted the most influential British artist of all time.
Presented as a beautifully designed and attractive package, illustrated with works of art from throughout Hockney’s career, this is the perfect gift for art lovers everywhere.

Long taboo, lived experience of motherhood—and all that accompanies it—has become the subject of urgent discussions within the art world. Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood proposes the artist mother as an important cultural figure, though one long overlooked. Modern and contemporary artists such as Berthe Morisot, Barbara Hepworth, Jenny Saville, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Betye Saar, Suzanne Valadon, Louise Bourgeois, Carrie Mae Weems, and many others, address motherhood as a creative enterprise, albeit one tempered variously by ambivalence, exhaustion, and grief. Renowned author and critic Hettie Judah also addresses the conventions and expectations of motherhood through the lens of queer theory, environmental anxiety, and alternative family models. Acts of Creation reflects on the work of a new generation of artists examining the meaning of maternity and the ongoing struggles surrounding reproductive rights. From ancient goddess artifacts to contemporary interpretations of pregnancy in popular culture, this captivating, accessible, and well-illustrated narrative challenges perceptions and illuminates the complexities of motherhood in our everchanging world.
Hettie Judah is one of Britain’s leading writers on art and a sought- after public speaker. She writes regularly for The Guardian, Vogue, Frieze, The i, and Apollo, and is the author of several art books that include Art London, Frida Kahlo, Lapidarium: The Secret Lives of Stones, and How Not to Exclude Artist Mothers (and Other Parents). As a way of making images, pigment applied to any surface from cave wall to canvas, painting has been around for tens of thousands of years. Yet it has proved capable of endless renewal. Now in the third decade of the twenty-first century it is once more at the forefront of contemporary art. How Painting Happens will consider how and why this is so, examining this perennial medium through the eyes of its exponents past and present.
Martin Gayford will draw on interviews carried out over more than two decades with, among many others, Frank Auerbach, Gillian Ayres, Georg Baselitz, Frank Bowling, Richard Estes, Lucian Freud, Katharina Fritsch, Rebecca Horn, Shirazeh Houshiary, Lee Ufan, Paula Rego, Bridget Riley, Jenny Saville, Frank Stella, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Wayne Thiebaud, Luc Tuymans, and Zeng Fanzhi.
These diverse artists talk about how they work, the different routes by which they came to be painters, their contemporaries, and predecessors. With painters’ insight they discuss such previous exponents of the brush as Titian, El Greco, Edward Hopper, Suzanne Valadon, Petrus Christus, Van Gogh, Degas, Klee, and Delacroix.
Altogether, this book will present a fresh, multidimensional perspective on the medium—so ancient and yet simultaneously so modern, and still capable of doing things no other art form can.

2024 marks the centennial of surrealism, one of the most influential artistic movements of the modern era. In 1924, André Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, a call to arms that established surrealism as a literary and artistic movement.
Surrealism was not in origin an art movement, but a philosophical strategy. It was a way of life—a rebellion against the establishment that had given the world the hideous slaughter of World War I. Instead of trying to analyze the work of the surrealists, bestselling author and surrealist artist Desmond Morris focuses on them as people. What were their personalities, their predilections, their character strengths and flaws? Did they enjoy a social life or were they loners? Were they bold eccentrics or timid recluses?
101 Surrealists features the famous—Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, René Magritte, Joan Miró, and Francis Picabia—and the overlooked: Hans Bellmer, Ithell Colquhoun, Leonor Fini, Julio González, E. L. T. Mesens, Edith Rimmington, and Kay Sage. The book draws on the author’s personal knowledge of the surrealists, capturing in concise form their lives, loves, and idiosyncrasies. The arts of surrealism were both spectacular and international, shaped by the darkest, most irrational workings of the unconscious. Shocking, witty, and always entertaining, Morris’s accounts illuminate the striking variation in approaches to the surrealist philosophy, both in the artists’ work and in their lives. 101 Surrealists will complement Morris’s earlier biographical volumes by encapsulating each artist in short, concise texts that convey with immediacy the impact and significance of each of the 101 artists featured.
Desmond Morris is one of the last surviving surrealists. His first solo exhibition was held in 1948 and in 1950 he shared his first London show with Joan Miró. He has since completed over 2,500 surrealist paintings, and eight books have been published about his work. He is the bestselling author of The Naked Ape: A Zoologist’s Study of the Human Animal, The Lives of the Surrealists, Postures: Body Language in Art, and The British Surrealists

Ronald Moody is a significant artist of the twentieth century, yet until now there has been no comprehensive monograph on his work. This biography explores the development of his sculpture, reestablishing his place within the story of twentieth-century art.
Born in Jamaica, Moody arrived in Britain in 1923, establishing studios in London and Paris. In 1939, his works were shown alongside African American artists in a large survey exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art. By 1941 he had produced some forty known sculptures in bronze and wood, and was regularly exhibiting internationally. Immersed in the art world, he formed friendships with journalists, actors, and artists including Marie Seton, Wifredo Lam, and Man Ray, until forced to flee the Nazi occupation of Paris in 1940. Back in London, he continued to work and exhibit for nearly half a century, accepting the prestigious Gold Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica for his eminence as an international sculptor in 1977.
Contributions by those who knew him—Paul Dash, David A. Bailey, Cynthia Moody, Errol Lloyd, and Val Wilmer—punctuate Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski’s account exploring the artist’s work and broader creative endeavors, including poetry and broadcasts for the BBC World Service. Scores of Moody’s works are illustrated, from large-scale figurative sculptures carved in wood through to postwar experimentation with concrete and resin casting. These pieces are set within the context of his contemporaries Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, and artists he exhibited alongside, such as Althea McNish and Aubrey Williams, who were part of the group known as the Caribbean Artists Movement, of which Moody was a founding member.
Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski is a Ronald Moody specialist. While surrealism’s treatment of the body has been much researched, the role of landscape has rarely been examined. Published one hundred years after André Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, Forbidden Territories reveals how surrealist ideas found their way into depictions of landscape as a metaphor for the unconscious, the relationship between surrealism and ecology, and landscape as a means to express political anxieties, gender constraints, and freedoms, ultimately reimagining our relationship with the world around us.
Some of the earliest surrealist artists used automatic and psychoanalytical approaches to explore the landscapes of the mind, drawing on childhood experiences to create magical, alluring, and uncanny environments. Recurring surreal terrains will be interrogated, from the desert and forest to the sea, the latter expanding on surrealist mythologization of the unconscious as a great ocean by examining links between bodies of water and psycho-surreal worlds in poetry, paintings, and photographs from the unique perspective of women surrealists. The development of surrealism in the 1920s and ’30s coincided with that of ecology, and the unexamined interplay between surrealism and life science, including the mutual influence of Sigmund Freud, is also explored in this beautifully illustrated survey. Taking a long look at surrealism, Forbidden Territories includes works by Eileen Agar, Leonora Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Lee Miller, and Yves Tanguy from the 1920s through the 1940s, continuing with later surrealists such as Edith Rimmington, Desmond Morris, and Marion Adnams, and interventions by contemporary artists working within the legacy of Surrealism such as María Berrío, Helen Marten, and Wael Shawky.
Eleanor Clayton is senior curator at the Hepworth Wakefield. Patricia Allmer is a leading scholar of surrealism and teaches art history at the University of Edinburgh. Anna Reid is lecturer in art history at the University of Leeds. Tor Scott is curatorial assistant at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Simon Wallis is the director of the Hepworth Wakefield.

Shortly before his early death, Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984–2019) emerged as a phenomenon. He started drawing and painting in 2011, at the age of twenty-seven, and within the space of just a few years had developed a highly personal style using intense colors to paint imaginative landscapes.
Wong’s expressively lyrical works were inspired by both traditional Chinese painting and Western art. He was especially influenced by Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), not only in terms of his painting style and choice of motifs, but also in some aspects of his life. Both artists were self-taught, and both faced mental health issues. Wong saw his own life reflected in that of Van Gogh, and once said: “I see myself in him. The impossibility of belonging in this world.”
Published to accompany an exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Matthew Wong–Vincent van Gogh explores the artistic and personal connection between the two artists, bringing around fortyfive paintings and drawings by Wong into dialogue with a group of Van Gogh masterpieces. Kenny Schachter, who knew Wong, contributes a personal introduction, which is followed by essays exploring the artists’ biographical and artistic kinship.
Kenny Schachter is a New York– based artist, writer, and curator. Joost van der Hoeven is a researcher at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Richard Shiff is chair in art at the University of Texas at Austin. His seminal publication Cézanne and the End of Impressionism: A Study of the Theory, Technique, and Critical Evaluation of Modern Art explored the relationship between late nineteenth-century artists and their subjective relation to reality as a source for their art. Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) is renowned as the Romantic painter par excellence, his works icons of an age of major social upheaval. His landscape paintings and drawings broke with traditional patterns of representation and paved new ways of both experiencing and reflecting on the ambivalent relationship between humankind and nature.
Accompanying the most comprehensive Friedrich retrospective in many years, this catalog reexamines the artist’s groundbreaking work in light of the current climate crisis and postcolonial reflection. It centers on more than sixty paintings and about one hundred drawings. Selected works by Friedrich’s contemporaries, notably August Heinrich, Georg Friedrich Kersting, Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, and Johann Alexander Thiele are also featured.
The second part of Caspar David Friedrich focuses on the contemporary reception of his work. In contributions ranging from video and photography to installations, some twenty artists working across a variety of genres and media explore the Romantic era, its attitude to nature, and the art of Friedrich. The participants include Alex Grein, Swaantje Güntzel, Jochen Hein, Johanna Karlsson, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Lyoudmila Milanova, Mariele Neudecker, Ulrike Rosenbach, Susan Schuppli, Santeri Tuori, and Kehinde Wiley.
Markus Bertsch is head of collection, nineteenth century, at Hamburger Kunsthalle. Johannes Grave is professor of modern art history with a focus on European Romanticism at the University of Jena. He was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis in 2020 for his research on art in the early 1800s, early Renaissance painting, and picture theory.

What does the language of color tell us? Where does one color begin and another end? Is it a radiant visual stimulus, an intangible function of light, or a material substance to be molded and arrayed? Color is fundamental to art, yet so diverse that it has hardly ever been studied in a comprehensive way. Art historian John Gage considers every conceivable aspect of the subject in this groundbreaking analysis of color in Western culture, from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century.
Gage describes the first theories of color, articulated by Greek philosophers, and subsequent attempts by the Romans and their Renaissance disciples to organize it systematically or endow it with symbolic power. He unfolds its religious significance and its use in heraldry, as well as how Renaissance artists approached color with the help of alchemists. He explores the analysis of the spectrum undertaken by Isaac Newton and continued in the nineteenth century by artists such as Georges Seurat, traces the influence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s color theory, and considers the extraordinary theories and practices that attempted to unite color and music or make color into an entirely abstract language of its own.
A seminal undertaking to suggest answers to many perennial questions about the role of color in Western art and thought, Color and Culture throws fresh light on the hidden meanings of many familiar masterpieces.
John Gage was an acknowledged international authority on the history of art and color, and wrote many books on the subject, including Color and Meaning: Art, Science, and Symbolism and Color in Art. He was head of the department of history of art at Cambridge University from 1992 to 1995.

From pitching your ideas and writing loan requests to working with artists, lenders, and art handlers; from writing interpretation material to installing and promoting your exhibition, The Curator’s Handbook is the most clear and complete guide yet to the art and practice of curating.
An introduction maps the history of curating from its origins in the seventeenth century to the multifarious roles of the curator today: tastemaker, custodian, interpreter, educator, facilitator, and organizer. Adrian George then guides the reader, across thirteen chapters, through the process of curating an exhibition. Each step is described in valuable detail and clear, informative language by this experienced curator, whose text pinpoints the keys to success (as well as which pitfalls to avoid).
With advice and tips from a renowned cast of international museum directors and curators—including Daniel Birnbaum, Aric Chen, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jennifer Russell, and Nicholas Serota—this new edition, updated to reflect on current concerns in the art world and the latest recommended best practices, is the essential handbook for all students, museum, and gallery professionals, and established or aspiring curators.
Adrian George is a curator, commissioner, writer, and educator with over twenty-three years’ experience working in some of the most influential art institutions in the world, including the New Museum, New York; Tate Modern; Tate Liverpool; and the UK Government Art Collection. He is currently director of programmes, exhibitions and museum services at ArtScience Museum, Singapore.

Most surveys of the history of art come neatly packaged. They are divided up into historic periods, artistic schools and movements, and the careers of individual painters. They may make the subject appear more manageable, but they are oversimplifications. In reality, movements and careers overlapped and intertwined, reacting to events in the world around them.
A Chronology of Art places developments in the art world into sharp focus. By prioritizing a purely chronological approach and sidestepping the clichés of conventional, academic pigeonholes, it presents an entirely fresh perspective on the subject. The book is structured around a central timeline, which features lavish illustrations of artworks, together with commentaries and additional information about the social, political, and cultural events of the period. The text is divided into four historical sections, becoming more detailed as it nears the present. From 1800 onward, each spread covers a five-year span, which is far more comprehensive than other surveys of this kind. The chronological spreads are interwoven with lively “In Focus” features, highlighting social, stylistic, and technical developments.
Iain Zaczek writes widely on art and design. His many books include: The Impressionists, Essential Art Deco, Celtic Art and Design, and The Art of Illuminated Manuscripts: Illustrated Sacred Writings. He was also a contributing author to Art: The Definitive Visual Guide

A superbly illustrated account of one of the major figures of modern British painting’s passion for cats, written with personal knowledge of the artist. By concentrating on a single subject very dear to John Craxton’s heart— cats—this volume offers an accessible introduction to this popular artist, who has been championed by David Attenborough and Andrew Marr, among many others. Craxton’s significance as an early artist companion of Lucian Freud, his time in Greece, and his collaborations with Patrick Leigh Fermor have generated growing interest in his art.
For Craxton, cats were an index of moods and states of mind, and a splendidly apposite vehicle for his visual and verbal wit. Craxton loved cats and lived with them for most of his life. The cat image came readily to mind and hand, whether he was planning a taverna scene in Crete or doodling during a telephone conversation. Cats permeate his art, weaving their way through his paintings, drawings, and prints, bringing humor and mischief to his images, as they did to his daily existence. Affectionate and faithless, they were like so many casual lovers, no better than they should be and gloriously on the make. In many ways, they are a fitting symbol or leitmotif for Craxton’s own happy- go-lucky life.
A widely accessible introduction to Craxton’s work, this delightful book will appeal to the devotee and the uninitiated alike.
Andrew Lambirth is a writer, curator, and critic. He has written for a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, and was art critic at The Spectator from 2002 to 2014. Women have always practiced as artists, but for centuries the art world considered them mere dilettantes. Their work was derided as secondrate, and they were considered intruders in a male profession. This study examines how, against the odds, they overcame these difficulties and shifts the focus away from women artists as “victims” to give an account of how they actually practiced their art. This stirring account documents the centuries-long struggle of gifted women who confronted the exclusionary tactics of a male- dominated art establishment but pressed ahead undaunted to gain acceptance as sought-after professionals.
Art historian Frances Borzello takes readers deep into the restricted world of women artists of the past, showing how diligently they trained themselves, set up studios, and pursued sympathetic patrons. Starting with Renaissance painters Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana, the book reconstructs the changing world of women artists as social attitudes evolved. Seventeenth- century painters Artemisia Gentileschi and Judith Leyster enjoyed success by depicting subjects relevant to women, as did eighteenth- century greats Angelica Kauffman and Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun with lucrative commissions. Further breakthroughs came in the nineteenth century as young hopefuls Mary Cassatt and Marie Bashkirtseff strove to be admitted to exhibiting societies and opened art schools. Finally, as equality for women advanced through the twentieth century, Augusta Savage, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, Mona Hatoum, and others led the way for today’s talented women to secure their rightful place in the annals of art. Now fully revised and updated, Frances Borzello’s engaging narrative continues to inspire.
Frances Borzello is an art historian and the author of several books, including The Naked Nude, Seeing Ourselves: Women’s Self-Portraits, and At Home: The Domestic Interior in Art She lives in England.

Women Pioneers of the Arts and Crafts Movement is a celebration of the work and ambition of the women who were at the heart of the most influential art and design movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It shines a light on the vital contribution of figures such as May Morris, Gertrude Jekyll, Annie Garnett, and many others, and describes the Arts and Crafts Movement from the perspective of these women who worked against the odds as artists, makers, teachers, authors, and entrepreneurs.
Women of the era took part in, and often led, the founding of exhibitions, societies, art schools, and small craft industries. Some were activists and social disruptors while using their skills and talents to make a living. This book highlights the versatility and range of these talented women, who worked across a host of disciplines, including textile design, embroidery, bookbinding, illustration, painting, enameling, stained glass, metalwork, furniture design, and architecture. It is richly illustrated with a wide array of their work, much of it previously unpublished. Featuring objects from the V&A’s renowned Arts and Crafts collection, the book also includes key pieces from other museums and private collections across the UK.

Artists have been using sketchbooks for centuries as integral tools in the creative process, especially during the preparatory stages leading to the creation of great works of art. Serving as portable companions, they accompany artists on their physical and mental journeys, offering intimate glimpses into their sources of inspiration. They are used to document daily life, national events, the landscape, and natural world with immediacy. Many artists have used sketchbooks to create meticulous botanical records, while others, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, planned their most important paintings within their pages.
Selected from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s extensive collection, the featured sketchbooks range from historic to contemporary examples including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Angelica Kauffman, George Romney, John Constable, Beatrix Potter, E. H. Shepard, Paul Nash, Shahed Saleem, and Julie Verhoeven. Lesser-known artists, especially women, for whom sketchbooks provided a creative outlet, are also highlighted. Drawn from Britain, Europe, and beyond, the wide-ranging selection of sketches blurs the boundaries between art and journal.
The Artist’s Sketchbook explores the significance of sketching across different eras and movements. It offers insights into changes in style and technique, exploring materials such as watercolor and pen and ink, and features exquisite examples of drawings from life and the imagination, material experimentation, and planning for larger works. Written by a group of expert curators and accompanied by detailed photography, this beautifully designed book will appeal to anyone interested in the art-making process, especially those for whom sketching is an important aspect of their own artistic practice.
Jenny Gaschke is senior curator of paintings and drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was the most prolific and diverse artist of Japan’s Edo period, with a body of work reputed to include more than thirty thousand drawings, paintings, and prints. Hokusai traces the career of this child from a working- class district of old Tokyo, then known as Edo, evoking the special atmosphere of this great city and of Japanese life at a time when Japan was closed to foreigners. Its urban centers enjoyed increasing wealth and stability, leading to a flourishing culture of art and pleasure-seeking. Woodblock prints of the genre known as ukiyo-e— “images of the floating world”—became defining images of the age. Hokusai became one of the great masters of the woodcut. His works range from portraits of popular actors and courtesans to landscapes and seascapes, including his celebrated “Thirty- Six Views of Mount Fuji,” and from cleverly observed scenes of everyday life to the erotic prints known as shunga. This “brush gone wild,” as he called himself, was rediscovered by the impressionists and aesthetes at the end of the nineteenth century. While his prints had a huge influence on the course of Western art, it is equally true that he himself was influenced by European painting, embracing techniques such as perspective and adapting them to suit Japanese tastes. He remains one of the greatest figures of world art.

The first book to document the short yet prolific artistic career of fashion photographer and filmmaker Tom Kublin, and a celebration of his creative union with Cristóbal Balenciaga during the fashion house’s postwar heyday in Paris.
More than 140 photographs and film stills by Kublin capture the golden age of Balenciaga couture in the 1950s and 1960s, from the impeccable elegance of the collection shoots—including exclusive film footage of Balenciaga himself at work—to striking covers and editorials for high-profile magazines.
Balenciaga – Kublin begins with a foreword by Maria Kublin and continues with a biography by Ana Balda, charting Kublin’s career, his place in the artistic milieu of the European avant-garde, and his working relationship with Balenciaga. Miren Vives, head of the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, also contributes.
Additional texts come from fashion industry professionals who worked with and knew Kublin best: an interview with his partner and muse, the model Katinka Bleeker; memories from the Italian fashion photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri, who began his career as Kublin’s assistant in Paris in the 1960s; and a piece by Lydia Slater, editor in chief of Harper’sBazaar UK, who looks back on Kublin’s work for the magazine at a pivotal time in its history.
This book honors the successes and innovations of Kublin’s career, recording for posterity his contribution to fashion photography and the iconography of the House of Balenciaga.
Ana Balda is a fashion curator and lecturer at the University of Navarra, where she teaches fashion illustration and photography. Together with Maria Kublin, she cocurated the exhibition “Tom Kublin for Balenciaga: An Unusual Collaboration” at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum in 2022. Louise Baring’s captivating text is based on interviews with Carla Sozzani, and each chapter covers a foundational aspect of Sozzani’s inspirational life and career. Beginning with her bourgeois childhood in Italy, the text takes us through her early love of fashion and passion for travel; her trajectory as a magazine editor, including working on special issues for Vogue Italia (her sister Franca Sozzani would edit the magazine for 28 years) and launching the Italian edition of Elle; embracing unmarried motherhood in conservative Milan; founding her own publishing company as well as a gallery that has staged hundreds of exhibitions, including of her own extensive photography collection; launching her own fashion label; helping to propel fashion designers Romeo Gigli and Azzedine Alaïa to worldwide fame; and creating—in collaboration with her long-term partner, artist Kris Ruhs—the world’s first concept store, 10 Corso Como, later rolled out in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, and New York. Ever restless and in search of new ways to share her vision, the interdisciplinary Sozzani continues to tread her own path: a true trailblazer.
Interspersed with images that illustrate each chapter are pull quotes in Sozzani’s own words. Complete with guest appearances by a veritable who’s who of the fashion, art, and design worlds—photographers Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, and Bruce Weber; fashion designers Yohji Yamamoto, Zoran, and Rei Kawakubo; and industrial designers Marc Newson and Tom Dixon, to name but a few—Carla Sozzani offers a fascinating look at the remarkable life and work of a visionary icon.
Louise Baring has written for The Economist, the Independent on Sunday, Vogue, and the Daily Telegraph. She is the author of several books on photography, including Lartigue: The BoyandtheBelleÉpoque; Martine Franck; Norman Parkinson: A Very British Glamour; Emmy Andriesse: Hidden Lens; and Dora Maar: Paris in the Time of Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, and Picasso

Azzedine Alaïa (1935–2017) was not only a world-renowned fashion designer but also an avid collector of vintage fashion. Now a major exhibition at the Palais Galliera, Paris, Azzedine Alaïa showcases the extensive collection he built up over the decades, driven by his fascination with the history of couture and his desire to conserve its heritage for future generations.
Accumulated in utmost secrecy and never revealed during his lifetime, the sumptuous selection of garments ranges from the nineteenthcentury elegance of Jacques Doucet and the House of Worth to the names that shaped twentieth- century fashion— Chanel, Balenciaga, Dior, Schiaparelli—and contemporary innovators such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen.
Captured in specially taken photographs, these meticulously crafted pieces are a tribute to Alaïa’s unerring tastes, to the couturiers who inspired and influenced him, and to his endless respect for the craftspeople who created such objects of lasting beauty.
Miren Arzalluz is director of the Palais Galliera, and former curator and head of collections at Fundación Cristóbal Balenciaga. Olivier Saillard is a fashion historian and director of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation.

This is the definitive catalog of an unparalleled collection of Indian jewelry and jeweled luxury objects made at the height of the Mughal empire and Deccan sultanates in the 16th and 17th centuries. The collection, widely regarded as one of the finest in the world, was assembled by Sheikh Nasser and Sheikha Hussa al- Sabah for The al- Sabah Collection, Kuwait, and reveals the beauty, sophistication, and diversity of Indian jeweled arts.
The Indian subcontinent is naturally rich in gems. From ancient times master jewelers developed a wide array of unique techniques and made it home to the most sophisticated jewels on earth. Exotic birds and animals, flowers, trees, and mythological scenes rendered in precious gemstones, gold, and enamel demonstrate these artists’ prodigious imagination and skill. They produced not only an unmatched range of jewelry to adorn the body but also ritual and household items of astonishing refinement and luxury, as well as extravagantly large engraved gemstones to serve as symbols of their princely patrons’ royal power—including a spinel of nearly 250 carats believed to be the legendary Timur Ruby.
This volume includes not only the finest and most valuable pieces in the collection—some familiar to connoisseurs, others published here for the first time—but also many previously unknown types that extend our understanding of artistic output in the region. With specially commissioned photography giving unprecedented new views of more than three hundred jeweled objects, this is a publication of historic importance and beauty, for all lovers of jewelry, the arts of India, and of the Islamic world.
Salam Kaoukji is curator and collection manager of The al- Sabah Collection, Kuwait, and an editor of Thames & Hudson’s long- running and acclaimed series of catalogs. Her previous books include Precious Indian Weapons and Other Princely Accoutrements and Treasury of the World: Jeweled Arts of India in the Age of the Mughals (with Manuel Keene).

This is the untold story of how two rebellious master watchmakers, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey, learned their craft, met, established a brand, and in a few years created some of the most astonishingly beautiful and mechanically sophisticated timepieces ever made. Today they are recognized as the makers of the most uncompromising designs in the world.
In early 1992, the two men met at Renaud et Papi, a hothouse of new watchmaking ideas in Le Locle in the Swiss Jura Mountains. They teamed up and launched Greubel Forsey in 2004 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, refusing to accept that everything had already been invented in watchmaking. Going against the grain, they focused their energy on uncompromising innovation and the most difficult elements of hand finishing, bringing back a level of excellence that would rival the eighteenth- and nineteenth- century masters.
Greubel and Forsey are responsible for many inventions that have advanced watchmaking expertise to new levels, as well as creating thirty unique and original calibers since 2004.
Michael Clerizo is the author of Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking and George Daniels: A Master Watchmaker and His Art. His work has appeared in numerous watch magazines and specialist websites. He is best known for his articles in the Wall Street Journal and was a contributing editor at WSJ Magazine from 2010 to 2023. He has also presented several segments of CNN’s Timeless.

Faithful unto Death reveals how pet cemeteries started—and why— through the stories of the people and animals that were integral to their development. These stories are illuminated by high-quality, original photographs of gravestones and memorials from North and South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, together with contextual illustrations of sites, rituals, and the pets themselves when they were alive. Combined, they reveal similarities in the way we mourn animal companions as well as stunning cultural diversity.
Centuries of tradition that hold human beings to be spiritually and morally superior have conspired to ensure that in western culture pets have never been allowed to die like a family member. There are no set rituals to provide closure when a pet dies, and there is the sense of taboo that it is somehow socially incorrect to mourn the loss of a pet as one would a person.
Faithful unto Death confronts this taboo while telling the stories of people who have memorialized their pets in celebration of their beloved animals. The book addresses prejudices that have historically surrounded animals, and reveals how in the nineteenth century a movement started that aimed to treat pets with dignity even in death. It is a fight that is far from over, but the triumphs that are revealed as the book unfolds, found in cemeteries small to grand and on monuments humble to huge, possess the power to touch everyone who has ever cared for an animal. From Charlie Chaplin’s canine costar in A Dog’s Life to the “forever faithful” Shep, this is a history filled with inspiration, wild eccentricity, and eternal love.
Paul Koudounaris has a PhD in art history from the University of California and has written widely on European ossuaries and charnel houses for both academic and popular journals. He is the author of The Empire of Death, Memento Mori, and Heavenly Bodies. Paul is a member of the Order of the Good Death and has over 110k followers on Instagram.

Spiritual November
$35.00 hardcover (CAN $47.00)
Elements is an eclectic, evocative, and resoundingly beautiful treasury of imagery exploring depictions of the elemental forces that reveal their profound significance to ancient philosophers, alchemists, and astrologers, and modern artists, photographers, and scientists alike. Expertly curated, themed, and paired by image alchemist Stephen Ellcock, modern and visionary images are juxtaposed with the ancient and arcane, and the creative power of the elements is contrasted with the disastrous.
Following physician and occultist Robert Fludd’s (1574–1637) order of the elements, Ellcock guides readers through a remarkable selection of images, ascending from earth through water, air, and fire before culminating in the most spiritual of the elements, celestial aether. He makes parallels with the five elements of eastern philosophies and their relationship to the chakras, acupuncture, and Chinese astrology. Introductory text explores how the elements have defined the components of Earth and the heavens since the ancient creation myths from around the world that first proposed the elements as the fundamental substances of the universe. Insightful panel texts punctuate the pages, illuminating key concepts. Pertinent literary, philosophical, and spiritual quotations are interspersed with the amazing images, presenting further commentary on the overarching themes.
At a time when humanity’s relationship with the Earth teeters on the edge of catastrophe, this compendium of images exploring the natural elements envisions the possibility of earthly and spiritual harmony emerging from the chaos.
Stephen Ellcock is a renowned image collector whose online “cabinet of curiosities”— an ever- expanding, virtual museum of art that is open to all via social media— has attracted more than 633,000 followers worldwide. His most recent book, Underworlds, was published in the United Kingdom, United States, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. He is also the author of The Cosmic Dance

The myths of Korea may seem a complex and intriguing mix of ghosts, spirits, and superstition, but they form the bedrock of one of the most vibrant global cultures today. In the past few decades, South Korea has experienced a rapid rise to prominence on the world stage as the Hallyu, the “Korean wave” of popular culture, drives newfound interest in the country. This swift transformation has also generated paradoxes within contemporary South Korea, where cutting- edge technology now coexists with centuries- old shamanistic legends and Buddhist rituals.
Korean myths are a living and evolving part of society, in both the North and South. With the export of Korean film across the globe, K-pop, fashion, K- dramas, literature, and comics there is a growing desire to understand the folklore and mythical underpinnings of contemporary Korean culture. Authors Heinz Insu Fenkl and Bella Dalton-Fenkl bring together a wealth of knowledge of both the new and the old, the traditional and the modern, to guide readers through this fascinating history and help them understand the culture and traditions of the Korean people. From the Changsega (“Song of Creation”) sung by shamans to the gods, goddesses, and monsters who inhabit the cosmos—including the god Mireuk, creator of the world, and the giant Grandma Mago, who was able to create mountains from the mud on her skirt—these myths have been disseminated for centuries and continue to resonate in popular culture today.
Heinz Insu Fenkl is a professor of English at the State University of New York, New Paltz. He is known internationally for his collection of Korean folktales and translations of contemporary Korean fiction and classical Buddhist texts. He is a PEN/Hemingway Award finalist and was included in the Barnes & Noble “Discover Great New Writers” selection. Bella Dalton-Fenkl is an artist and photographer, whose work has been exhibited at the Water Street Gallery in New Paltz, and at Mill Street Loft and the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie. Her photography has also appeared in the journal Azalea: Journal of Korean Literature & Culture

Citrus traces the history of today’s global superfood from its cultivation in the ancient world from just a handful of original wild species, via Arab trade routes, the noble collectors of medieval Europe, imperial conquerors on the high seas, and merchants betting on the highest-value fruit crop ever known.
The story of citrus permeates human history, as recorded in the literature and art of civilizations from antiquity to the present day. When Alexander the Great’s army swept over the Persian Empire, they found the citron: the first citrus fruit known in the West. During the Napoleonic wars, British ships carried lemons and limes to protect their sailors against scurvy; the “Limeys” ruled the waves. As the citrus trade grew in importance in the nineteenth century, the Sicilian Mafia was established among citrus farmers, protecting their crops and their livelihoods.
Mandarin, citron, pomelo, bergamot, kumquat—a glorious abundance of citrus fruits has delighted and stimulated ancient thinkers and explorers, Arab geographers and scientists, European royalty, artists, physicians, and plant breeders. From the art of the Renaissance to modern advertising and graphic design, this richly illustrated, invigorating cultural history reveals how these extraordinary, life- giving fruits have flavored, scented, healed, and colored our world.

During his six-year journey across the United States creating the project that became American Geography, Matt Black collected objects in the locations he visited. Each location is designated as an area of “concentrated poverty”—a US Census definition for places with poverty rates of 20% or higher. Over time, the objects he found and collected began to take on symbolic significance.
As Black crisscrossed the United States, his collection grew into the thousands: plastic spoons and forks, lottery tickets, liquor bottles, lighters, and matchbooks. Some items were important, like job applications, medical paperwork, driver’s licenses; some were lost personal effects, like family photographs, bracelets, eyeglasses, notes, and letters. And there was the detritus of labor: work gloves, broken tools and supplies, wire, bolts, padlocks, and bent nails.
This new monograph, presented as a companion volume to Black’s seminal photobook, American Geography, presents photographs of these objects, assemblages, and collages, as well as previously unpublished images from American Geography, and the voices of those who are cut off from the “American Dream.”
These humble, discarded objects form a portrait of America assembled from its roadways and sidewalks, an archaeology of dispossession. For those who follow Black’s photographic work and his unflinching critique of inequality in the United States, this book is an essential volume.
Matt Black is a member of Magnum Photos. He has received numerous honors, including the W. Eugene Smith Grant and three Robert F. Kennedy Journalism awards. He lives in the Central Valley of California.

Anastasia Samoylova is one of the most dynamic image makers of our time, using her mastery of color and formal dynamics to explore issues of climate change, consumerism, and the overdevelopment of twenty-firstcentury cities. Russian-born and now a resident of Florida, Samoylova moves between observational photography and studio practice, creating imagery that is absolutely “of the moment” but also drawing from influences including the Russian avant- garde, cubism, pop art, and the postmodern interest in the blurred lines between image and reality. Across the last decade, Samoylova has assembled a global vision at once sublimely beautiful and incisive in its assessment of the challenges we face.
Samoylova’s previous publications, including FloodZone, Floridas, and Image Cities, have each focused on a single project. Anastasia Samoylova, edited by longtime creative collaborator David Campany, presents her career to date across six project-centered chapters and an overview of her visual language that, with ever-present intelligent humor, both seduces and gently provokes the viewer in equal measure.
Supported by texts by writer and critic Lucy Sante and Met curator Mia Fineman, this first career retrospective introduces a rising star in photography to a popular, global audience.

This volume brings together the most important photographs from the long career of Louis Stettner. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1922, Stettner’s life would span nearly a century, his work reflecting the unique vision of one of the twentieth- century’s master photographers.
Organized chronologically, Louis Stettner presents approximately 190 photographs from Stettner’s career, featuring his iconic images of New York and Paris; the architecture of urban wonders such as Penn Station, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the New York City subway; as well as candid and empathetic street photographs of the people who inhabit these metropolitan centers.
While celebrated for his black-and-white works, the book also includes Stettner’s works in color, many previously unpublished and unknown. The authors investigate the influence of his experiences as a photographer in World War II on his life and work. Consuelo Kanaga (1894–1978) was one of the pioneers of modern American photography. Beginning her career in 1915 as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, Kanaga quickly became a highly skilled darkroom technician, developing a distinctly artistic aesthetic style inspired by the photography of Alfred Stieglitz. Over the next six decades, she produced beautifully composed images over a wide range of subjects, characterized by an abiding interest in the social conflicts of her time, including urban poverty, workers’ rights, racial segregation, and prevailing inequality. She became especially known for her emotional and introspective portraits of African Americans, which combined modernist formal technique and radical documentary commentary.
Featuring two hundred photographs from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, this substantial new appraisal of Consuelo Kanaga’s work establishes her place as one of America’s most vital twentiethcentury photographers.
Published to accompany a major touring exhibition from 2024–2026 at Fundación MAPFRE, Barcelona; Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Brooklyn Museum, New York.

Mo Yi is a photographic artist with a career spanning nearly forty years, from the 1980s to today. This retrospective contextualizes his work within the evolution of contemporary art following reform and opening in China in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution. Working in a documentary tradition, but building on and reinterpreting the meaning of “documentary,” Mo Yi’s practice is exemplified by experimentation. Regularly creating work in distinct series, he has continually tested ways of extending the boundaries of the medium and his own personal expression.
This publication, supported by his first exhibition outside of China, surveys Mo Yi’s experimentation in photographic production and performance over the course of his career. Organized into five chronological chapters that mark the milestones of Mo Yi’s journey as an artist, each introduced by Holly Roussell, the book presents the key projects and series, created through an era of great change in China. A restless innovator of photographic practice and form, Mo Yi has combined photography of daily life with the exploratory and performative processes for which his work has become renowned, shifting from the dynamic black-and-white images of his earlier practice to the vivid red that becomes a recurring motif in his later color work.
With text contributions from Christoph Wiesner, director of Les Rencontres d’Arles, and Philip Tinari, director of UCCA, this book will introduce one of China’s most important, yet virtually unknown, artists to international audiences for the first time.
Holly Roussell is a curator and art historian specializing in photography and contemporary art from Asia. Between June 1972 and July 1973, Daido Moriyama produced his own magazine publication, Kiroku, which was then referred to as Record. It became a diaristic journal of his work as it developed. In 2006, encouraged by the Japanese publisher Akio Nagasawa, Moriyama was able to resume publication of Record
The first thirty issues of Record were edited by Mark Holborn into the now classic 2017 photobook of the same title. Daido Moriyama: Record 2, also edited by Mark Holborn, picks up from where the original left off, with a selection of images and texts by Moriyama from issues thirty-one to fifty of the magazine. With Moriyama now in his eighties, Record 2 will likely be the end of the story. But despite his advancing years, the work is unmistakably Moriyama’s aesthetic—fiercely contrasted images with fragmentary, intensely composed frames that express the vision of one of the greatest photographers.
Mark Holborn is an internationally recognized editor and designer of illustrated books working with a diverse range of artists, from William Eggleston to Lucian Freud. He is also a curator, author, and specialist on Japanese culture. His books include Antony Gormley on Sculpture, Susan Meiselas: On the Frontline, and Daido Moriyama: Record

Man Ray (1890–1976) was a man both of and ahead of his time. With his conceptual approach and innovative techniques, he liberated photography from previous constraints and opened the floodgates to new ways of thinking about the medium.
A close friend of Marcel Duchamp and André Breton, he was one of the few photographers to be mentioned among the Dada artists and surrealists. He also worked as a fashion photographer, first for Vogue and later for Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair. Renowned as the creator of Ingres’s Violin a photograph from 1924 that broke records when it was sold for $12.4 million in 2022—Man Ray remains an influential figure in the worlds of art, fashion, and pop culture, with many other artists referencing his work.
Published in connection with an exhibition at Photo Elysé e and in the centennial year of the publication of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto, Man Ray presents more than one hundred and fifty of Man Ray’s portraits, primarily from the 1920s and ’30s. It includes portraits of the leading lights of the Paris art scene, among them Marcel Duchamp, Robert Delaunay, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti, and Pablo Picasso, as well as a selection of his fashion work. As an innovator of photographic techniques and compositional form, Man Ray found the studio portrait—be it of the artists and writers with whom he had longstanding friendships or of the objects and sculptures he collected—to be the playground in which he could express the visual wit and experimentation for which he is renowned.
Nathalie Herschdorfer is the director of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her previous books include Deborah Turbeville: Photocollage, Body, and Coming into Fashion Wendy A. Grossman is an independent scholar and curator. She is the author of Man Ray, African Art, and the Modernist Lens

Known for his monumental painting and installations, the internationally celebrated artist Anselm Kiefer’s works are marked by a constant questioning of history and collective memory. Born in Germany two months before the Nazi capitulation in 1945, Kiefer’s reflections on postwar identity, loss, and shared experience, nourished by myths and literature, create an unparalleled breadth of imagery.
The use of photography as both practice and source material is a little-known aspect of Kiefer’s art that has played a central role throughout his career. In the Beginning presents over one hundred and thirty works charting the artist’s relationship with photography and his investigations into what images reveal.
Jean de Loisy is an art historian and independent exhibition curator. Sébastien Delot is collections director at Musée Picasso Paris and former curatorial director of LaM, Lille. Heiner Bastian is a writer and exhibition curator. Christian Weikop is professor of modern and contemporary German art at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh.

In this thought-provoking anthology, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum has partnered with the Prix Pictet, the world’s leading prize for photography and sustainability, to show a different side to humanitarian photography.
Coeditors William A. Ewing and Elisa Rusca decided to select thirty photographers from the five thousand or so artists who have been nominated since the award was founded in 2008. Adopting a broad definition of humanitarian photography, they looked for work with a visible humanitarian impulse and attributes such as care, dignity, and empathy. The result is a diverse, stimulating and, at times, surprising visual display that is very different from the “breaking news” images we often associate with humanitarian action. What sets these photographs apart? An unerring sense of compassion. This compelling collection underlines the power of contemporary photography to move us and inspire positive change in the world.
William A. Ewing has been an author, lecturer, curator of photography, and museum director for more than forty years. His many publications on photography include Landmark, Civilization (with Holly Roussell), Flora Photographica (with Danaé Panchaud), and Edward Burtynsky. Elisa Rusca is an art historian, writer, and curator. She is currently director of exhibitions and collections at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva.

Drawing on one of the oldest and largest photography collections in the world, Calling the Shots offers an unprecedented view of photographic history through a queer lens. It includes a broad range of global LGBTQIA+ representation from the mid-nineteenth century to now, presenting images from pioneering LGBTQIA+ photographers and subjects alongside work documenting activism and hard-won legal battles, over a century of performance, nightlife, and diverse queer communities, collectives, and subcultures.
Following an introductory essay by Zorian Clayton, images are presented in six thematic chapters: Icons, Staged, Body, Liberty, Making a Scene, and Beyond the Frame. Each chapter opens with a short introductory essay, followed by an extended plate section. Expanded captions highlight key images, and “artist in focus” inserts draw on the work of selected photographers to illuminate particularly rich moments in LGBTQIA+ history.
Bold proclamations of queer identity and community sit alongside personal explorations of self; documentation of struggle, joy, and everyday life is considered side-by-side with performances and photographic fictions that continue to challenge the bounds of gender and sexuality. This vital, accessible volume offers an exciting, expansive appraisal of photography’s role in expressing, documenting, and celebrating queer life. It will be essential for all with an interest in the history of photography, but especially for those with an interest in LGBTQIA+ history.
Zorian Clayton is a curator of prints in the art, architecture, photography, and design department of the V&A. Lydia Caston is exhibition project curator in the art, architecture, photography, and design department of the V&A. Hana Kaluznick is assistant curator in the art, architecture, photography, and design department of the V&A.

Photographs, even the most iconic, often have something seemingly obvious about them. They appear to represent the “real” world and our first instinct is that they can be easily interpreted, which is not always the case with paintings. But this sense of familiarity with photography can lead to ambiguities. Looking at Photographs outlines key approaches to help us understand why a photograph captures our attention and moves us. This introductory reference is structured to help you develop new and more in- depth ways of looking at images, whether as a viewer or practitioner— or just out snapping with your smartphone.
Everything counts in a good photograph, even down to the smallest details. Across seven chapters, visual culture expert Laurent Jullier discusses themes and concepts that are essential to understanding the medium, including photography as a reflection of reality; manipulation and defamiliarization; focus, perspective, and space; time and the moment; identity, portraits, and selfies; and the power of images.
With examples drawn from across the world and throughout the history of photography, from Louis Daguerre to Julia Margaret Cameron, L ászló Moholy-Nagy, Dorothea Lange, Andreas Gursky, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Dayanita Singh, Eva Woolridge, and many others; in addition to a helpful glossary of terms, Looking at Photographs is not just about learning “how to read” photographs, it is about knowing how to ask the right questions when you look at images.
Laurent Jullier is a professor at the Institut Européen de Cinéma et d’Audiovisuel, University of Lorraine; director of research at the Institut de Recherches sur le Cinéma et l’Audiovisuel, Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris; and a member of the Advanced Research Team on the History and Epistemology of Film and Moving Image Study at Concordia University, Montreal. Editor of the journal Mise Au Point, he teaches visual culture studies and has written several books and articles, including Une Brève Histoire du Cinéma: 1895–2020 (coauthored) and L’Analyse de Séquences

Both an exploration of color and form and a dazzling artistic statement, Erik Madigan Heck: The Tapestry is a one-of-a-kind retrospective— one that originated during a time of great professional and personal uncertainty for the artist. Relentlessly creative, Madigan Heck used the enforced pause in his life, with the global pandemic as the backdrop, as a contemplative space to revisit a decade’s worth of his work as a photographer and artist. This collection serves as a meditative exploration of Heck’s unique fusion of photography and painting, characterized by a bold embrace of natural light, resulting in a stunning array of unapologetically beautiful and vividly colorful images.
The flowing, lyrical design of this book, created in collaboration with leading design studio APFEL, weaves a visual narrative that traces not only the evolution of Madigan Heck’s craft but also the threaded interconnections between photography, fashion, and the broader spectrum of visual art.
With contemplative texts, this volume, presented as a covetable, collectible, and immersive book object, will appeal to all with an appreciation for light, color, and form in art and photography.
Erik Madigan Heck is a photographer, artist, founding editor of art and fashion publication Nomenus Quarterly, and creative director at Van Cleef & Arpels. He has collaborated with fashion designers and labels, including Ann Demeulemeester, Haider Ackermann, Kenzo, and Giambattista Valli. His previous books include Old Future and The Garden.

I. M. Pei (1917–2019) was one of the world’s most influential architects. Born and raised in China, Pei trained and worked in the United States, establishing a practice that spanned seven decades and multiple continents. His legacy includes the realization of some of the most highprofile projects of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, from the modernization of the Louvre in Paris to the design of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.
Going beyond the usual building-by-building format of most architectural monographs, I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture is organized thematically, exploring Pei’s life and work through six topics that were central to his unique approach to architecture: transcultural identity, urban redevelopment, art and civic form, material and structural innovation, politics and patronage, and regenerating cultural and historical archetypes. Bringing together previously unpublished archival materials, specially commissioned essays, new photography, and personal contributions from those who knew and worked with Pei, this book presents both celebrated and lesser-known aspects of the architect’s life and career while solidifying his position in architectural history and popular culture.

Glenn Murcutt believes “architecture is not about a material, it’s about place-making. It’s about prospect, refuge, climate, topography, flora, fauna, it is about making beautiful spaces that link with the landscape.” A thinker ahead of his time, Murcutt is one of the world’s most celebrated architects, having won the Alvar Aalto Medal, the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. He is known for his highly considered process of discovery that responds uniquely to the Australian landscape.
Working in close collaboration with Murcutt, architect Nick Sissons, Murcutt’s former student and assistant, presents a selection of neverbefore-seen projects documenting some of the esteemed architect’s most notable works. Using extraordinary true-to-life renders, Glenn Murcutt: Unbuilt Works reveals ten previously unseen designs in remarkable detail, including original hand- drawn plans, sections, elevations, and sketches from his personal archive. Murcutt discusses each project in detail, examining the progression of his design philosophy while presenting a new perspective into his life and works. A revelation for any lover of architecture.
Nick Sissons studied architecture at the University of Technology, Sydney. After completing his degree, he worked with Glenn Murcutt as an assistant on the Fletcher Page House in Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales. In 1997, Sissons traveled by motorcycle from Sydney to London, where he joined Foster + Partners. Sissons became a UK-registered architect and a member of the RIBA. He returned to Sydney in 2003, where he now lives and works with his wife, Patricia. They established their award- winning practice, Sissons Architects, in 2012.

Tropicality: Houses by Andra Matin brings together sixteen of the best houses designed by the architect and his studio over the last two decades. Chosen for their exquisite craftsmanship and lush tropicality, each house represents the architect’s vision of relaxed living and innate feeling for tactile materials. These are cool environments, in every sense of the word, that exist effortlessly in harmony with their surroundings.
From a house elevated on stilts that’s completely open to the outdoors, to one topped with a giant, overhanging concrete roof, to a hexagonal weekend villa hidden among the trees, these are homes that will delight and inspire anyone with an interest in beautiful spaces.
Working in a tropical climate in a huge country where the architecture scene is often overlooked, Andra Matin has come to redefine indooroutdoor living. His work is widely admired across the region, but many of his projects have rarely been seen. Matin’s novel approach, revealed here in his first English-language monograph, has much to teach—especially as it continues to gain momentum and relevance in a warming world.
Andra Matin is Indonesia’s best- known and most lauded architect. Born in Bandung, he studied at Parahyangan University in his hometown, before setting up his namesake practice in 1998. This is his first English- language book.

Point Line Plane is architectural theory, but written as narrative, full of intriguing vignettes, such as the fact that in Ancient Rome windows were fitted with slices of marble because glass was so expensive. It’s written in a very Japanese form: a series of mini essays that circle around a theme and is aimed at a highly literate audience.
Seventy-two related essays across four sections set out Kuma’s rejection of the architecture of volume and mass that categorized the twentieth century in favor of a more ad hoc architecture that can be easily disassembled and, by drawing on tried and tested practices of the past, touch the earth more lightly.
Kengo Kuma established Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990 and went on to become professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Tokyo, in 2009. He is widely known as a prolific writer and philosopher and has designed many buildings in Japan and around the world. He is also the author of several books, including Anti-Object and Kyokai: A Japanese Technique for Articulating Space

This stunning volume documents Waneella’s unique journey from novice pixel pusher to world-renowned artist, indisputably the leading name in this reinvention of the once retro pixel-art aesthetic. The book will take us from her early experiments with the pixel-art form creating pseudovideogame visuals, through to the years where her unique style crystallized, fusing sci-fi–tinged architecture, cinematic hints of narrative, and masterful deployment of light sources and shadow.
Alongside this complete catalog of her works are several process sections, walking the reader through Waneella’s working style, which often initially draws influence from Japanese streets found via Google Street View. Her creative process is explored step by step, detailing the underlying structure, rigorous perspective work, and experimentation that goes into every piece. Each step is accompanied by open and humorous commentary from the artist herself—some of these how-tos will span over twenty steps—making Waneella: Pixelscapes a must-have for her legions of budding pixel-artist followers.
Opening with a foreword by Japanese videogame designer Ikumi Nakamura, the book features an in- depth profile, charting Waneella’s creative journey in her own words, and artworks often with detailed discursive captions, imparting anecdotal—and invariably funny— information on how each piece came together.
Waneella, also known as Valeriya Sanchilo, is a prolific pixel artist who began her creative journey in multimedia animation at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Russia. Since 2012, she has become an established artist and built a dedicated fanbase of more than 250,000 followers across Tumblr, X, Instagram, and YouTube. Waneella’s captivating urban scenes, with their meticulous detail and 16- bit videogame charm, ambient YouTube animations with music by E.Sanchillo, and covetable prints have carved out a unique space for her in the universe of pixel art.

Working its way through the fascinating creation story and cultural footprint of the WipEout game series, WipEout Futurism offers unprecedented access to the game’s visual archives and reveals the creative processes behind the teams, tracks, vehicles, and iconography that define the series. Within these pages you will find original concept art, promotional materials, in- game photography, the monumental graphic design work of The Designers Republic, and much more.
WipEout crashed onto the scene in 1995, shifting games into the cultural fast lane with its unique 3D visual designs. It propelled a wondrous hit of antigravity, hyper-speed racing into the heart of the freshly released PlayStation console and, over time, the series grew into a cult phenomenon among graphic designers and gamers alike. With its clubland branding, devised by cutting- edge Sheffield agency The Designers Republic, and its on-the-pulse collaborations with electronic artists, from the Chemical Brothers to Kraftwerk, WipEout was not only a racing game, it was a vehicle for art.
WipEout Futurism chronicles the iconic game’s vision, struggles, and achievements—from first conception to future plans—in a distinctive union of trailblazing artwork and graphic design. The book includes exclusive interviews with electronic duo Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll, sound designer Loic Couthier, writer Damon Fairclough, game director Stuart Tilley, and more.
Duncan Harris is a game-industry artist who has worked for companies including Sony, Square Enix, Bethesda, and EA. His writing has appeared in such places as Edge, PC Gamer , and Rock Paper Shotgun. He also runs a website, Dead End Thrills, which explores the art of games through the hobby of taking screenshots.

Where are the tombs of Alexander the Great or Cleopatra? Both rulers were buried in Egypt, but their tombs have never been found despite years of intensive research and excavation. Yet we have tantalizing clues. Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt describes the quest for these and other great “missing” tombs—those we know existed, but which have not yet been identified. It also discusses key moments of discovery that have yielded astonishing finds and created the archetypal image of the archaeologist poised at the threshold of a tomb left untouched for millennia.
In this gripping account, Chris Naunton explains the mysteries of the missing tombs and presents all the evidence, skillfully unraveling the tangled threads surrounding the burials of the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten and his son Tutankhamun, and the burial place of Imhotep, architect of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, among others. Could other such tombs lie undiscovered in the Valley of the Kings? In fact, the Valley almost certainly does guard hidden treasures. Amazing finds of unsuspected tombs continue to occur there and elsewhere in Egypt, making headlines worldwide—all are covered in this book.
As well as immersing the reader, step by step, in the action of the search and the thrill of discovery, the book also explores the reasons why tombs remain such a central part of both the popular perception of Egyptology and the continuing allure of ancient Egypt.

How were the ancient wonders of the world built? How many people did it take to build the Great Wall of China or the Sphinx at Giza? The Seventy Wonders of the Ancient World answers these and many more questions, examining antiquity’s most spectacular feats of engineering and celebrating the achievements of the builders who worked without the aid of modern technology.
Expanding upon the theme of the traditional Seven Wonders, The Seventy Wonders of the Ancient World incorporates marvels from around the globe, spanning the centuries from the first stone monuments of the fifth millennium BCE to the Great Temple of the Aztecs in the sixteenth century CE. Lesser-known monuments as well as famous sites are explored in detail, such as the giant stelae of Aksum and the mountain palace at Sigiriya.
The raising of the stones at Stonehenge and the laying out of the Nazca Lines on the face of the Peruvian desert are all described and explained by an international team of experts. Packed with fact files, this is a testament to the skill of the ancient architects and engineers who continue to impress successive generations down the ages. Recently updated and in a new accessible paperback format.

For millennia, the Mediterranean has been one of the global cockpits of human endeavor. World- class interpretations exist of its classical and subsequent history, but there has been remarkably little holistic exploration of how its societies, culture, and economies first came into being, despite the fact that almost all the fundamental developments originated well before 500 BCE. The Making of the Middle Sea offers a full interpretive exploration into the rise of the Mediterranean world from its beginning, before the emergence of our own species, up to the threshold of classical times.
Extensively illustrated and ranging across disciplines, subject matter, and chronology, from early humans and the origins of farming and metallurgy to the rise of civilizations—Egyptian, Levantine, Hispanic, Minoan, Mycenaean, Phoenician, Etruscan, early Greek—the book is a masterpiece of archaeological and historical writing. Now featuring a new preface exploring the most recent archaeological research on the Mediterranean world.

The ancient city of Angkor in Cambodia has fascinated scholars and visitors alike since its rediscovery in the mid-nineteenth century. All are wonderstruck by the beauty and multiplicity of the sculptures that adorn its temples and structures and are overwhelmed by the sheer size of Angkor. There is nothing to equal it in the archaeological world.
A great deal was already known about the history of Angkor and the brilliant Khmer civilization that built it thanks to pioneering work by archaeologists and scholars, but our knowledge has now been completely revolutionized by cutting- edge technology. Airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) has revealed entire cities that were previously unknown and a complex urban landscape with highways and waterways, profoundly transforming our interpretations of the development and supposed decline of Angkor.
In this comprehensive edition of Angkor and the Khmer Civilization, respected archaeologist Michael Coe is joined by Damian Evans, who led this remarkable program of scientific exploration, to present the results and implications of these groundbreaking discoveries that are rewriting history.
Michael D. Coe was professor emeritus of anthropology at Yale University and curator emeritus for the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University. His books include The Maya, Mexico: From the Olmecs to the Aztecs, and Breaking the Maya Code Damian Evans was the founding director of the University of Sydney’s Overseas Research Center at Siem Reap-Angkor and a research fellow at the École Française d’Extreme- Orient (EFEO).

Britain has a rich past, with incredible archaeology. Every day, new discoveries transform our understanding of its history. Most are made not by professional archaeologists, but by ordinary members of the public. Some are chance finds; others are recovered by the thousands of fieldwalkers, mudlarks, and metal detectorists who scour Britain’s countryside and waterways looking for artifacts and coins. Beneath Our Feet is a celebration of this growing public involvement in archaeology, and of the groundbreaking work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme managed by the British Museum in England and Amgueddfa Cymru in Wales. Its mission is collaboration with public finders, encouraging them to report their discoveries so they can be recorded on a national database and shared with archaeologists, historians, and everyone with an interest in the past buried beneath our feet. From the 3,500-year- old Ringlemere Cup to the Anglo- Saxon Staffordshire Hoard, a heart pendant connected to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, and a jar of American gold coins buried by a Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, these are the stories of more than fifty astonishing treasures, the people who found them, and how they are reshaping British history.
Michael Lewis is head of portable antiquities and treasure at the British Museum and a visiting professor at the University of Reading and the University of Helsinki. He is known for his research on medieval finds associated with religion and everyday life and is coauthor of The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry (with David Musgrove). Ian Richardson is the senior treasure registrar at the British Museum and secretary to the treasure valuation committee. He has a particular interest in postmedieval archaeology— and especially vervels! Mackenzie Crook is the writer, director, and star of the BAFTA- winning television series Detectorists

A Field Guide to Autumn is a pocket-sized introduction to autumn. Building on children’s natural curiosity about the world around them, this book aims to establish a connection with nature at an early age that will go on to last a lifetime!
Go berry picking, make art out of fallen leaves, identify mushrooms, and build a woodland den. Discover why the weather changes in autumn and how animals prepare for winter.
This book features lyrical poems, hands- on crafts and activities, scientific facts, and identifier pages to help children spot different spiders, leaves, and fungi. In this worldwide adventure, readers get up close and personal with one of nature’s most misunderstood creatures: the wolf. Packed with little-known facts about wolves’ family lives, eating habits, and their connection to domestic dogs, readers will discover the secret lives of wolves and how to protect them.
For many people, wolves are the stuff of nightmares and horror movies, but the reality is that they’re among some of the most vulnerable wild animals on our planet. By following field guide Huw Lewis Jones and nature illustrator Sam Caldwell into the wild, readers will meet subspecies of grey wolf living in forests throughout Europe, North America, and China, as well as red wolves in North Carolina and other members of the canid family, including coyotes.
Along the way, aspiring naturalists will discover the difference between a timber and a tundra wolf, what traits wild wolves share with domestic dogs, and why wolf poop is so important to scientists!
Through entertaining and informative text and expressive illustrations, Are Wolves Afraid of the Dark? challenges the stereotype of the “big, bad wolf,” passed down to us through fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, and shows that wolves are intelligent, sensitive creatures with far more to fear from us than we have to fear from them!

Gift Lab
Gift Lab FAQ
Why gifts? Why not stick to books?
Because we all learn through playing: from lion cubs and puppies to school kids and families . . .
Books are wonderful, but there is no better way of approaching a new subject than by having fun with it. (Not to mention that other fact, which book publishers tend to ignore . . . not everyone reads books!)
So this is all just a bit of fun?
Not just that. These gifts, games, and jigsaws are no less rich or original than our books. Each one represents a new way of conveying content. They are books by other means.
But isn’t everyone doing this kind of thing at the moment? There has certainly been a bit of a “gift gold rush” in the last few years, with major publishing groups investing heavily, often indiscriminately, in gifts. As a result, the market has been enveloped by cheap gifts and games.
We are doing the opposite of that.
How will your gifts be different?
We will be pitching our gifts one level above anything that has been published before. Staying true to the Thames & Hudson DNA, these titles will have the highest production values. We will also raise the bar on all other fronts: producing gifts with better content, working with groundbreaking illustrators and championing expertise with leading authors.
Oh, yes, and let’s not forget that creative spark. We will be working with amazing creatives across the board.
Welcome to our T&H Gift Lab.
Marc Valli Associate Publishing Director

You’ll know a Gift Lab title when you see one. With a signature box and an innovative modular design, our formats have been designed to stand out from anything else on the market. Here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect:
• All our boxes will have drawers and proper containers, suggesting “content” and “keepsake.” Once you have finished playing a game or assembling a jigsaw you can always put all the parts back into the drawer.
• They will also have a distinctive and carefully thought-out visual identity with colored drawers, patterned liners, and colored paper seals rather than shrink-wrapping.
• Individual titles stack together to form a larger unit with multiple pull-out drawers. You’ll quickly find yourself becoming a collector of our modular boxes.
The Gift Lab’s first season will include three different formats.
