How does Chineasy work? • The Chinese language is traditionally taught through a series of between 180 and 215 radicals, the basic building blocks used to form the characters of the Chinese language. • For example, the building block (e.g. 人, ‘person’) can be combined with one or more other characters to make a compound character (e.g. 众 , ‘crowd’). Two or more independent characters can be placed next to one another to make all kinds of words or phrases (e.g. 人, ‘person’ plus 大, ‘big’ makes 大人, ‘adult’). This principle of building blocks is what makes Chineasy so easy!

A graphically appealing, illustration-led system that will enable all readers – from schoolchildren to adults – to grasp the concept of Chinese ideograms with ease Learning Chinese is notoriously difficult and has long put off the most linguistically savvy Westerners… until now. Breaking down the Great Wall of language, ShaoLan has unpicked Chinese characters and created a simple system for quickly understanding the basic building blocks of the written language. Working with renowned illustrator Noma Bar, she has developed a unique set of engaging illustrations that offer a glimpse into the wonder of the Chinese language and culture. The book’s main section introduces the ‘radicals’ – the key characters on which the language is built – and reveals how they can be combined to form a wealth of complex words and phrases. In fewer than 200 pages, readers of all ages will have made the first steps towards a genuine appreciation of Chinese, loving every new character they learn. Fun, witty, educational, enriching – Chineasy provides a winning way to approach Chinese language and culture.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: Here and Now Clément Chéroux Clément Chéroux is a historian of photography and curator of the 2014 retrospective exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

500 photographs in colour and black and white 29.5 x 24.5cm 400pp ISBN 978 0 500 544303 March

£45.00

An essential new retrospective of Henri Cartier-Bresson, including rare and unpublished work by the twentieth century’s greatest photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work embraced art, politics, revolution and war. His observations of the effects of poverty and revolution around the world led directly to his pioneering photojournalism, and his co-founding of Magnum Photos. He also became renowned for his penetrating portraits of the most prominent figures of his time: Cartier-Bresson’s biographer Pierre Assouline called him ‘the eye of the century’. Published to accompany a major exhibition in Paris, this magnificent book presents a new, much broader and more complex view of an oeuvre that has all too often been reduced to the single concept of ‘the decisive moment’. Taking in Cartier-Bresson’s work from Surrealism to May ’68, it shows very clearly that there was never just one Cartier-Bresson but many, and captures not only the history of his masterly photography, but also that of the century he lived through. In addition to some of his best-known photographs and excerpts from his sketchbooks, it includes many seldom seen or unpublished images, and rarities in colour as well as black and white. Asylum of the Birds Roger Ballen Introduction by Didi Bozzini Roger Ballen is an Americanborn photographer who has lived and worked in South Africa since the 1970s. Ballen’s photographs are collected by some of the most important institutions in the world and he has won numerous prestigious awards. Didi Bozzini is a curator, critic and writer.

90 duotone photographs 30.0 x 28.0cm 144pp ISBN 978 0 500 544297 March

£32.00

Utterly memorable, psychologically tense and masterfully composed: the new monograph from one of the world’s most acclaimed and collectible contemporary art photographers Asylum of the Birds is the long-awaited new book from Roger Ballen, one of today’s most revered and original image-makers. Reproducing an entirely new body of work, this new volume extends the artistic trajectory charted across Roger Ballen’s three previous books, Outland, Shadow Chamber and Boarding House. Asylum of the Birds’ images have all been photographed within the confines of a house in a Johannesburg suburb, the location of which remains a closely guarded secret. The inhabitants of the house, both people and animals – and most notably the ever-present birds – are the cast who perform within a sculptural and decorated theatrical interior that Ballen creates and orchestrates. The resulting images are painterly, complex and surreal, richly layered with graffiti, drawings, animals and found objects. In a world where photographers often seek to avoid definition, Ballen is a true original who not only defies genres, but has defined his own artistic space as well. Photography 7

Bruce Gilden Introduction by Hans-Michael Koetzle New in the Photofile series, a collection of work from the controversial street photographer Bruce Gilden

80 photographs in colour and duotone 19.0 x 12.5cm 144pp paperback ISBN 978 0 500 411100 February

Bruce Gilden began taking photographs at the end of the 1960s, when he created his now-famous series recording tourists and pleasureseekers on Coney Island. He has since become best-known for his work on the streets of New York, focusing on the city’s characters and outsiders, and has also spent many years on projects in Haiti, Japan and Ireland. A member of Magnum Photos since 1998, Gilden has taken the genre of street photography and pushed it in new directions, documenting the essence of the people he sees and the terrain through which they move. As Hans-Michael Koetzle says in his introduction to this book, ‘Gilden is interested in people, in types and characters, in a world of social difference, anatomical contrasts, physical peculiarities … he has developed a visual language that is almost entirely his own.’ Hans-Michael Koetzle is a writer and journalist. He is the author of many books on photography, including, most recently, Photo Icons.

This book is about the possibilities of street photography, and how it can be approached in a tangible way. It begins with an overview of street photography, examining its past, present and future, and looking at how the genre has changed over time. The reader is then introduced to twenty of the most acclaimed international street photographers, among them Bruce Gilden, Alex Webb, Nils Jorgensen and Saul Leiter. Integrated within the profiles are twenty fully illustrated tutorials, including how to shoot a face in a crowd and how to train your eye to observe and capture the unexpected. It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have: it could be a topnotch digital or a mobile phone camera. This book shows you that being a street photographer is about looking for luck. £39.95 10 Photography

An elegiac look at Rochester, New York, home to Eastman Kodak for 125 years until its bankruptcy in 2012 For this project, Alex Webb took photographs of Rochester, New York, with his last rolls of Kodachrome, a formerly vibrant colour film that can now only be processed as black-and-white. The resulting photographs, taken during what may be the last days of film as we know it, are a meditation on film, memory, time and the city itself; they have a weathered quality akin to a fading memory. Alex also took some shots in digital colour, which punctuate the black-and-white work with images in his signature style. Rebecca, who still uses film for all her work, responded to the medium’s uncertain future by creating a melancholy refrain of colour still-lifes and portraits of Rochester women past and present. Woven into the book are quotes by many of the famous writers and thinkers who have been connected to Rochester, including poets John Ashbery and Ilya Kaminsky. The volume includes a separate booklet and special tipped-in images throughout, and the authors have also created a timeline on the cultural history of Rochester that traces the evolution of this once-vibrant and now complex city.

Paolo Veronese Alessandra Zamperini Alessandra Zamperini completed her doctorate at the University of Verona. She has written widely on Italian art of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

300 colour illustrations 32.6 x 27.0cm 352pp ISBN 978 0 500 093832 March

£60.00 12 Art

A sumptuous introduction to Veronese’s oeuvre, published to coincide with the major exhibition at the National Gallery Paolo Caliari, known as Paolo Veronese, was one of the masters of late Renaissance Italian art. He was born in Verona in 1528, but it was Venice that became the centre of his working life. His mural and ceiling decorations for the Church of San Sebastiano, the Doge’s Palace and the Libreria Marciana earned him early acclaim, and he soon gained a reputation for his inventiveness, his mastery of perspective and his dignified depictions of classical grandeur. Known for his enormous feast scenes, frescoes and ceiling paintings, Veronese refined the use of colour to enhance his illusionistic effects: he has been called the greatest colourist who ever lived. As well as following the trajectory of Veronese’s art and iconography, this volume examines recurring themes within his work, illustrating his approach to subjects such as banquets, Biblical women, moral allegories and the lives of the saints. The disparate threads of Veronese’s career are brought together here to portray his coherent and spectacular body of work, which made a vital contribution to the reputation of Venice as a centre of civilization.

Velázquez Las Meninas and the Late Royal Portraits Edited by Javier Portús Javier Portús is the Head of the Department of Spanish Painting (up to 1700) at the Museo del Prado, Madrid.

92 illustrations, 83 in colour 28.0 x 24.0cm 176pp ISBN 978 0 500 970584 January

£34.95

A wonderfully illustrated survey of the high point of the royal portrait, with the genre’s key exponent at its heart Published to accompany an exhibition at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Spain, this book analyses the development of Velázquez’s court portraits from his second trip to Rome in 1649 to his death in Madrid in 1660, a period with a marked and distinctive personality. Velázquez’s sitters were now primarily women and children rather than men, a difference that was accompanied by changes in the density of the pigment, the pictorial handwriting and use of colour, which became richer and ranged more widely. In terms of artistic achievement and social advancement, this decade marks the peak of Velázquez’s career, with Las Meninas (1656) his great masterpiece. The book also traces the development of the Spanish court portrait following Velázquez’s death. Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo and Juan Carreño de Miranda both looked to their predecessor’s solutions in order to move royal iconography towards a more complex, Baroque style and to create a particularly Spanish typology for the court portrait. £19.95 14 Art

An engaging and many-faceted new history of self-portraiture, charting the fascinating evolution of the genre The self-portrait has become the defining visual genre of our confessional age, but modern artists are far from the first to have exploited its power and potential. In this broad cultural survey, James Hall brilliantly maps the history of self-portraiture, from the earliest myths of Narcissus and the Christian tradition of ‘bearing witness’ to the prolific self-image-making of today’s contemporary artists. Along the way he reveals the importance of the medieval ‘mirror craze’; the confessional self-portraits of Titian and Michelangelo; the role of biography for serial self-portraitists such as Courbet and van Gogh; themes of sex and genius in works by Munch and Bonnard; and the latest developments in our globalized age. Hall covers the full range of self-portraits, from comic and caricature self-portraits to ‘invented’ or imaginary ones, and looks deeply into the worlds and mindsets of the artists who have created them. Offering a rich and lively history, this is an essential read for all those interested in this most enduringly popular and humane of art forms.

238 illustrations, 212 in colour 22.9 x 15.2cm 320pp ISBN 978 0 500 093818 April

An exquisitely produced literary art book that focuses on Degas’s work as one of the outstanding draughtsmen of the 19th century Edgar Degas (1834–1917) was described as ‘the most intelligent, the most demanding, the most merciless draughtsman in the world’ by the poet and critic Paul Valéry. Degas’s powerful drawings and the pastels, characterized by himself as ‘orgies of colour’, are some of the most compelling works in western art. Through an examination of the artist’s drawings and pastels, which exist in great number and variety, Christopher Lloyd examines the development of Degas’s style and outlines the story of his life in the contexts of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Following a broadly chronological approach, Lloyd discusses the wide range of Degas’s work: the images of ballet dancers, jockeys, laundresses, milliners and female nudes, as well as the less well-known landscape drawings. With over 200 illustrations that capture the most fleeting of subtleties and shades, this book capitalizes on our renewed fascination for drawing in the history of art.

From alchemy and art to Warhol and windows: Duchamp’s life, work and thinking in more than 200 pithy dictionary entries Marcel Duchamp has entered mainstream culture as one of the founding fathers of modern art. Despite his popularity, books on Duchamp often shroud his art in theoretical and critical writing. Here, instead, is a book exploring the artist’s life and work in a thoroughly new and engaging manner, with concise, alphabetical dictionary entries written in lively, jargon-free prose that make Duchamp accessible and enjoyable for all. Published to mark a century since the appearance of the first readymade, the book features more than 200 entries on the most interesting and important artworks, people and ideas in Duchamp’s life, from chess, puns, the fourth dimension, love and genius, to the Bicycle Wheel and Fountain, Walter and Louise Arensberg, Peggy Guggenheim, Katherine S. Dreier and Arturo Schwarz. An introduction shows how the dictionary form has been an inspiration to artists and writers from Flaubert to the Surrealists. Underpinned by the latest scholarship and research, Thomas Girst’s texts reveal how, in the words of contemporary artist Thomas Hirschhorn, Duchamp was ‘the most intelligent mind of his time’.

Over 130 of the world’s sharpest and most creative minds make sense of our exterior and interior worlds through intriguing and imaginative maps of their own devising Maps have always been at the heart of human knowledge. Whether they chart a newly discovered land or lay out a complicated process, maps serve to improve our understanding of what surrounds us. They represent information, organize and express what we know about our world, explain difficult concepts, and make reality intelligible. Maps make the complex simple, and reveal the complexity behind the apparently straightforward. Original and thought-provoking, Mapping It Out invites leading lights from a host of fields to create a personal map of their own, in whatever form and showing whatever terrain they choose, whether real-world or imaginary. Some contributors have translated scientific data into simplified visual language, while others have condensed vast social, political or natural forms into concise diagrams. Many have reworked existing maps to subvert their original purpose or to present an alternative view of reality. Others play with the map’s commitment to truth by plotting invented worlds and charting imaginative flights of fancy. Going further, some offer entirely new kinds of map – or even reject the map’s claim to bear facts altogether. Acclaimed novelist Tom McCarthy reflects on the relationship between maps, literature and knowledge, while Hans Ulrich Obrist considers the influence of maps on artistic creativity. Imaginative, visionary and richly absorbing, this book will appeal to anyone interested in how we visualize our worlds, whether exterior or interior, physical or abstract, real or imagined.

£29.95 22 Art

Foreword by Martin Creed Interview by Tom Eccles New in paperback, the definitive publication on the Turner prize-winning artist, published to coincide with his major retrospective at the Hayward Gallery, London Renowned for his straightforward approach to making art and his deft economy of means, Martin Creed has produced sculptures, installations, drawings, films, performances, music and text, each of which has found its inspiration in the objects and activities of everyday life. This extensive volume documents more than 700 works produced over twenty years, selected by the artist himself. Always in search of the essential nature of things, Creed uses the simplest materials to create a world in which reality appears transformed by conceptual rules, as well as by the unexpected breaking of those rules. His work is simultaneously subtle and spectacular, austere and playful – whether it be a sheet of paper crumpled into a ball, a protrusion from the wall, a door opening and closing, the lights going on and off, or a soundtrack inside a moving lift. The book features a foreword by the artist and accompanying texts by Germaine Greer, Darian Leader, Colm Tóibín and others, supplemented by an exhibition history, bibliography and biography.

Iwona Blazwick Commentaries by Cornelia Parker With an introduction by Bruce Ferguson and a preface by Yoko Ono New in paperback, the only comprehensive monograph on Cornelia Parker’s work from the 1970s to the present day Cornelia Parker is one of the most thoughtful and profound artists working in Britain today. Exploring everything from ghosts and gravity to relics and the unconscious, she transforms everyday, ordinary objects into compelling works of art. Parker’s projects – which have included blowing up a shed, steamrolling musical instruments, exploding a firework made from a pulverised meteorite, and suspending charcoal taken from a church struck by lightning – have captured the public imagination since she first came to prominence in the 1990s. This lavish monograph, now available in paperback, traces the development of her art from the late 1970s to the present day. Organised chronologically to show the development of her thinking and practice, the book features five thematic essays by curator and writer Iwona Blazwick. Over 175 works are illustrated, each accompanied by an invaluable and intimate commentary from the artist herself. The book features a preface by Yoko Ono and an introduction by critic and curator Bruce Ferguson. Art 23

Jeff Koons discusses his life and art with the distinguished curator Norman Rosenthal Controversial. Notorious. Influential. Important. The most successful of living artists Jeff Koons has been a focus of creative fascination and significance for more than thirty years but has always remained guarded about his intellectual life, influences and motivation. The distinguished curator and long-time Koons friend and collaborator Sir Norman Rosenthal has, for the first time, removed that guard. Published to coincide with his touring 2014–2015 retrospective, this important book provides the most revealing portrait yet of Jeff Koons’ singular personality and artistic vision. Rosenthal’s masterful interviews, conducted over four years, give unparalleled access to Koons’ thoughts, disclosing the artist undistorted and in his own words. As well as examining all his major series in depth, from his first inflatables to his latest series on antiquities, the interviews shed new light on the artist’s interest in other artists’ works, reveal the significance of his youth and family life on his art, and explain the key concepts of his practice, such as his ideas on self-acceptance, banality, ecstasy and sex. Extensively and comprehensively illustrated throughout, this book will become the reference point for all who want to understand Koons and creativity in the 21st century.

The first monograph on Ian Davenport Over the past 25 years Ian Davenport has consistently employed intensely rigorous and unconventional painting processes. This book provides an in-depth examination of his production, from his electric fan paintings, to his poured arches, circles, lines and puddle paintings. He has experimented with method and medium, exploring the qualities and applications of paints, both in his early monochrome paintings and in his later complex colour combinations. His paintings draw upon the rich heritage of European and American abstraction, and also the contemporary urban environment of London. Davenport is a keen drummer and listens to music while he paints. The musical influence is important; in his more recent paintings the repetition of multiple vertical lines of various colours creates an underlying rhythm that pulses through each work. This book will be accompanied by an exhibition at Waddington Custot Galleries, London, in May 2014.

The only publication devoted specifically to the wall-paintings in the Bundi royal palaces, this richly illustrated book pays longoverdue tribute to some of India’s greatest painted spaces The royal fort at Bundi, an isolated town in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is home to elaborately decorated palaces that are among India’s most beautiful buildings. Until recently several of these palaces have been completely closed to visitors, keeping their painted walls hidden from public view but also aiding their preservation. This unprecedented volume celebrates the survival of the wall-paintings at Bundi by presenting a striking photographic survey of these long-hidden treasures, most published for the first time, and including both abundant details and many scenes that are difficult to view with the naked eye. The paintings depict daily life at the Bundi court from the early seventeenth to the late nineteenth century, as well as scenes from traditional literary and religious texts. The illustrations together reveal the rich cultural interrelationships that gave these paintings their unique power and importance. Art 27

Disease and the Art of Medical Illustration Richard Barnett A covetable collection for artists, historians and aficionados of the weird and wonderful, The Sick Rose combines social history with astonishing, sometimes gruesome, artwork In an era before widespread colour photography, accurate medical illustrations were relied upon to teach students and aid diagnosis. The best examples, featured in this book, are beautiful and morbid, sublime and singular, and remarkable pieces of art. Organized by disease, each chapter focuses on the historical impact of a particular affliction. Objects from the Wellcome Collection, such as early stethoscopes, vaccination kits and other medical miscellanea are also featured, as are additional caricatures, diagrams, paintings and maps. The epidemics that shaped the century, such as tuberculosis and syphilis, are placed in context through a lively text by Richard Barnett, who proves to be an affable guide through some macabre territory. This fascinating Wunderkammer of a book will enthral artists, designers, historians, fans of Francis Bacon, lovers of Zola, readers of Dickens, reciters of Keats and the incurably curious everywhere.

The Bicycle Artisans Will Jones A celebration of the creativity and craft behind 88 of the world’s most inventive makers of bicycles From Lycra-clad ‘weekend warriors’ to gritty urban messengers, bicycle culture has many manifestations and tribes. Today’s sophisticated cyclist eschews global manufacturers, exploring ever-more ‘bespoke’ rides as a reflection of individuality and discovering new worlds of tradition and innovation, craftsmanship and science. Often working in tiny studios and workshops, these master craftsmen produce highly sought-after designs. Collected here for the first time, these artisans flourish through word of mouth and are often little known outside a small group of aficionados and enthusiasts. The alphabetically presented selection includes established names such as Achielle, Cielo Cycles and Corima and new kids on the block such as Art & Industry, Bondi Beach Cruisers and Foffa, as well as product designers – for example, Torkel Dohmers and Marc Newson. Some have achieved cult status through a particular detail – an elegantly fashioned lug, technology transfer from another industry or the use of a rare type of leather – but all have elevated what was once a humble enterprise to the ultimate marriage of artistry and function. Byoung Cho, widely considered to be Korea’s most important architect, aims to make each of his buildings ‘so it looks like it’s not designed at all, it’s just there’. Influenced by Korea’s rich aesthetic tradition, Cho utilizes understated forms to create serene buildings with a high regard for nature and sustainability, that yield powerful and subtle experiences for their inhabitants. He has created many buildings, cultural centres, schools, health facilities and residences throughout Korea, Japan and the United States. This book features over twenty-five of Cho’s most highly acclaimed projects, including Twin Trees (2010), his instantly iconic towers located adjacent to the 14th-century royal Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul. The Twin Trees embody Cho’s fascination with the relationship between ancient history and modernity in the context of both Korea and the world at large. The projects are accompanied throughout by sketches and plans, providing a comprehensive insight into the making of these buildings. Byoung Cho will be inspiring reading for all architects, architectural students and those interested in sustainability and the built environment.

A monograph on one of the world’s great contemporary architects Alberto Campo Baeza, one of architecture’s most distinguished voices, is renowned for a body of work that exemplifies the power of radical simplicity. His buildings have ranged in scale from such small but beautiful residential structures as the Turégano, Gaspar and De Blas houses, to cultural facilities such as Andalucia’s Museum of Memory in Granada, an addition to his earlier achievement, the Caja General Savings Bank. All share an uncompromising dedication to simple composition, and demonstrate the ways in which he so brilliantly deploys disciplined restraint to achieve architectural silence in the face of the clamour of the modern city. Covering four decades of practice, this superbly produced monograph includes critical commentaries on Campo Baeza’s persistent quest for beauty and relevance through his adherence to clarity and a deeply felt devotion to modernist principles of architecture. And the Architecture of Graham Phillips Phyllis Richardson With additional texts by Kenneth Powell and Graham Phillips A uniquely in-depth view of a contemporary masterpiece As Chief Executive at Foster & Partners, Graham Phillips has had responsibility for the design and construction of some of the world’s most iconic buildings. But it was a small house in the fields of Buckinghamshire that sent him back to the drawing board, and to his investigations as a student into ‘a search for form’. Skywood has been called a house that ‘offers a masterclass in architecture’s power to excite and inspire’. It also became a favoured setting for television and film producers: it is known as the ‘Va Va Voom’ house for its appearance in a Renault Clio advert featuring football star Thierry Henry. This book offers a uniquely in-depth view of Skywood, and places it alongside Phillips’s other residential projects. Texts by Phyllis Richardson, Kenneth Powell and Graham Phillips accompany evocative photography, plans and working drawings. These illustrations, combined with Graham Phillips’s explanation of his own design philosophy, give both a full and intimate portrait of the creation of this iconic building.

Highly refined building techniques combined with the stark contrast between the scarcity of light in winter and the glow of long summer days have provided the context for architectural acts of genius. This book, now available in paperback, features just under fifty projects, ordered according to the way in which different light conditions have imparted particular qualities to the buildings. Henry Plummer has a uniquely authoritative perspective and his words resonate directly with his own artfully taken images. On the High Line is an engaging, friend-at-your-side guide to everything that a visitor sees when strolling through the park: the innovative gardens and their thousands of plants from around the world; the architecture, both old and new; and a neighbourhood whose lively history includes the Titanic, the Manhattan Project, S&M clubs and the Tenth Avenue Cowboy. In 2014, a large portion of the final section of the park will open. This edition includes eight new pages devoted to this extension, with original photography, design renderings, and a new essay by Rick Darke.

With colour Stafford Cliff Photographs by Gilles de Chabaneix A compact edition of the ultimate sourcebook of decorative ideas for colourful living ‘An inspirational mosaic of decorative ideas … feast your eyes’ Elle Decoration, of The Way We Live This visually thrilling book showcases Gilles de Chabaneix’s unerring eye for the telling use of colour, not only in interiors but also in the natural world and the urban environment in a multitude of places and cultures. The book’s first grouping focuses on the monochromes, where white, black and neutral shades of grey are used for their own distinctive qualities or as backgrounds for splashes of stronger colours. In the blues, we can observe how colours are used to create a particular ‘feel’, and how, combined with white, blues can express a whole culture – that of the Mediterranean. Reds and pinks appear as the colours of luxury and fine living. Yellows and greens bring the sun and natural light into the interior. And, finally, this visual feast is completed by a section illustrating those colours principally derived from natural materials.

In the Country Stafford Cliff Photographs by Gilles de Chabaneix A compact edition of the ultimate guide to timeless rural living ‘If you’ve ever been tempted to forgo the city in favour of something more rustic, The Way We Live in the Country might tempt you to make the leap’ Elle Decoration This is a comprehensive sourcebook of decorative ideas – and much more – for anyone who dreams of living in the country, or is lucky enough to live there already. From the vineyards of Provence to the hills of California and the farms of Australia, photographs from across the world capture the distinctive architecture, decorative schemes, landscapes and rustic details that make country living so desirable. Traditional and contemporary elements are treated with the same sympathetic eye: an airy, minimalist room looks out on an ancient piazza; herbs and antique tools hang from wooden beams beside a roaring fire; a ancient stone floor, worn smooth, shines through the sleek glass top of a modern dining table. Always at the heart of the experience is the landscape itself that draws the town- or city-dweller to the joys of the countryside. Interiors 51

The A–Z of Eating Out Joseph Connolly The bestselling novelist’s frank, witty and indispensable A–Z guide to the many ups and occasional downs of our most popular social activity: eating out

19 illustrations 22.9 x 15.2cm 256pp ISBN 978 0 500 517369 February

£16.95 68 Food

Joseph Connolly’s bestselling novels are renowned for their author’s acute eye for observing human behaviour. Now, writing in his characteristically humorous and witty style, he draws on a lifetime’s experience of participating, as well as watching others, in perhaps the most important bringer of joy – as well as irritation – in contemporary life: eating out. The A–Z of Eating Out offers a wealth of guidelines, suggestions, top tips, cautions, advice and insider knowledge to help everyone get the most out of their dining experience. Organized into more than 140 A–Z entries, each of which is followed by a handy list of related topics, it journeys through the gastronomic alphabet, from the all-you-can-eat buffet, family meals and greasy spoons to the liquid lunch, pop-ups, star chefs and vegetables. And there are plenty of surprises, too, not least the book’s final entry… This is a book for dipping into, for giving, and for being entertained by: a perfect reminder that eating out is all about ‘simple enjoyment, friendship and personal indulgence’. And if, along the way, one happens to learn when it is acceptable to use one’s mobile phone at the table (almost never), and whether succumbing to one’s desire for a late-night kebab from that rather grim-looking place just round the corner can ever be forgiven (almost certainly never), then so much the better.

£24.95 70 Food

Beautifully illustrated, including original artwork by Cressida Bell, this covetable volume is both a source of inspiration for the modern chef and a unique celebration of life, love and art at the heart of Bloomsbury Throwing aside the stifling mores of late Victorian Britain, the Bloomsbury Group fostered a fresh, creative and vital way of living that encouraged debate and communication (‘only connect’), as often as not across the dining table. Gathered at these tables were many of the most important cultural figures of the modern era: E. M. Forster, Roger Fry, J. M. Keynes, Lytton Strachey, Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, among many others. In The Bloomsbury Cookbook Jans Ondaatje Rolls invites us to dine with these enduringly fascinating individuals, taking us into the very centre of their world through the meals around which they argued, debated, laughed and loved. Part cookbook, part social and cultural history, the book includes nearly 200 recipes, many unpublished, from Bloomsbury members such as Frances Partridge, Helen Anrep and David and Angelica Garnett, accompanied by paintings, photographs, quotations, letters and additional period dishes. From the young Virginia Woolf devouring crème brûlée near a lighthouse in St Ives to the expansive dinners attended by luminaries such as Clive Bell, Leonard Woolf and Duncan Grant, Rolls paints an intimate and astonishingly detailed portrait of the group, conjuring up the scents, colours and textures of breakfasts at Monk’s House, lunches at Charleston, tea in Tidmarsh, evening parties at Gordon Square and dinners in the south of France.

£24.95 72 Biography

An original and vivid biography of the great art collector, philanthropist, and early benefactor of Yale University Rare is the man with the force of character, powers of leadership, and variety of cultural, scientific and spiritual interests of Elihu Yale (1649–1721). Having made his fortune during his tenure at the East India Company, Yale returned to London in 1699 with a magnificent collection of Indian gems, furniture and textiles, which was subsequently augmented by books, art works and scientific instruments. The auctions of his collection following his death in 1721 are seen as a landmark in the history both of collecting and of auctioneering art in early 18th-century England. This biography explores Elihu Yale’s life in the society of Madras and London, and his interests, including musical and scientific instruments and books, and then turns to a study of Yale as a dealer and a collector. Spanning Mughal India, the London of the English Enlightenment and Puritan New England, this story will appeal to anyone interested in early 18th-century London; furniture; the fashion for things Oriental in the West; gemstones and jewelry; and collecting works of art.

India A Short History Andrew Robinson Andrew Robinson is the author of twenty-five books, nine of them on Indian history and culture, including Satyajit Ray: The Inner Eye, and the co-authored Rabindranath Tagore: The Myriad-Minded Man, the first of which was described by V. S. Naipaul as ‘an extraordinarily good, detailed and selfless book’.

£16.95

India’s unfolding story, from the ancient Hindu dynasties to the coming of Islam, from the Mughal empire to the present day Over four millennia India has had many histories and provided a kaleidoscope of experiences to its neighbours, invaders and trading partners. To pilgrims from China, India was the birthplace of the Buddha. To Alexander the Great, it was a land of naked philosophers and massive armies mounted on elephants. To ancient Rome, it was a source of luxuries. At the height of the Mughal empire, India boasted nearly 25 per cent of the world economy, but then, under British rule, its economy declined. Andrew Robinson incisively distils this uniquely diverse story, from the remarkably advanced cities of the early Indus Valley civilization to India’s current incarnation as the world’s largest democracy. The book places as much emphasis on individuals, ideas and cultures as on the rise and fall of kingdoms, political parties and economies. Anyone curious about a great civilization, and its future, will find this an ideal introduction, at times controversial, written by an author who has been intimately engaged with the subcontinent for almost four decades. ‘An entertaining, knowledgable and forensic examination of one of the most extraordinary archaeological digs ever!’ Sir Tony Robinson

Digging for Richard III How Archaeology Found the King Mike Pitts Mike Pitts is an archaeologist and award-winning journalist. He has been the editor of Britain’s leading archaeological magazine, British Archaeology, for the past ten years.

A thrilling book that gives the first full archaeological story behind the discovery of Richard III’s grave: a Tutankhamun for our times The events of Richard III’s reign and his death in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth are known worldwide through Shakespeare’s most performed, filmed and translated history play. Digging for Richard III is the page-turning story of how his grave was found, the people behind the discovery and what it tells us. It is the first complete narrative of a project that blended passion, science, luck and detection. Told by a noted archaeologist with access to all the parties involved, it follows the quest from an idea born in an Edinburgh bookshop to the day, fourteen years later, when two archaeologists carefully raised the bones from a car park in Leicester, and the scientific studies that resulted. The vivid tale of a king, his demise and now his rediscovery, this is also an insider’s gripping account of how modern archaeology really works, of how clues meticulously assembled and forensically examined are pieced together to create a narrative worthy of the finest detective fiction. A visually stunning survey of shamanic clothing and regalia from distant prehistory into modern times The striking accoutrements of shamanism give us a rare window into the deep past of humanity and an insight into one of the world’s oldest religions. Shamans communicated with the spirits, supplicating them for success in hunting, healing and divination, to help humans survive in the harsh northern lands. Clothing and regalia varied, but always embodied the shaman’s mystery and power. Elaborate, heavy costumes featured rare and valuable elements of metal, ivory and wood; fantastical masks, drums, amulets, staffs, fringed headdresses, coats and gloves were the tools, armour and weapons of the shaman, requiring a lifetime of training to wield. In these richly illustrated pages, Patricia Rieff Anawalt explores the diverse shamanic regalia and traditions of the lands of the Far North: Siberia; the Arctic and Alaska; and the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. These strange and often beautiful objects have inspired Western scholars, artists and sculptors, including the Surrealists, and the artifacts still speak to us today of humanity’s multivalent connections to the natural world.

The perfect introduction for the modern reader to the world of ancient Egyptian myth and legend Which gods created the world according to the ancient Egyptians? How did they explain the sun’s movements and its disappearance at night? In what ways did mythology permeate their lives? And what did they believe happened in the afterlife? This engaging and enjoyable guide explores how the ancient Nile-dwellers explained the world around them. It delves into the creation and evolution of the world, and the reigns of the gods on earth, before introducing us to the manifestations of Egypt’s deities in the natural environment; the inventive ways in which the Egyptians dealt with the invisible forces all around them; and the perils of the life hereafter. From stars and heavenly bodies sailing on boats, to the wind as manifestation of the god Shu, Shaw explains how the Egyptians encountered the mythological in their everyday lives. Much more than a straightforward retelling of the ancient myths, this accessible yet authoritative guide will introduce the reader to a new (yet simultaneously ancient) way of understanding the world. £18.95 78 Archaeology

Popular science at its best – a novel hypothesis about the evolution of our social lives, put forward by world-class scientists with vigour and passion When and how did the brains of our hominin ancestors become human minds? When and why did our capacity for language or art, music and dance evolve? It is the contention of this pathbreaking and provocative book that it was the need for early humans to live in ever-larger social groups, and to maintain social relations over ever-greater distances – the ability to ‘think big’ – that drove the enlargement of the human brain and the development of the human mind. This ‘social brain hypothesis’, put forward by evolutionary psychologists such as Robin Dunbar, one of the authors of this book, can be tested against archaeological evidence, as Clive Gamble and John Gowlett show in the second part of Thinking Big. Along the way, the authors touch on subjects as diverse and diverting as the switch from finger-tip grooming to vocal grooming or the importance of making fire for the lengthening of the social day. Ultimately, the social worlds we inhabit today can be traced back to our Stone Age ancestors.

Anatomy of the Normandy Campaign Charles Messenger New in paperback, a vivid re-creation of the D-Day invasion and its aftermath, published to mark the 70th anniversary of the campaign ‘Well-informed and clearly illustrated … excellent’ The Guardian ‘Messenger’s knowledge of his subject comes through in the clear, info-packed, subtopic-laden essays’ Publishers Weekly This powerful study chronicles the evolution of the invasion plan and culminates in a day-by-day account of the landings by sea and by air on the Normandy beaches, followed by the grim six-week struggle to break through the German defences. An important feature is the space devoted to the German point of view, based on the latest archival research, and the organization of the French Resistance in northern and western France. At the heart of the book are 71 maps in full colour, many drawing in detail on those used by the Allies in 1944. And Other Posters from the Nanny State Hester Vaizey Nostalgic, graphically powerful posters that encapsulate the social history of Britain in the postwar era ‘Life is Better on the Land’, ‘Don’t Ask a Man to Drink and Drive’, ‘Be Really Cool – Man – Save’, ‘Clunk Click Every Trip’ – with these kinds of slogan combined with eye-catching graphics the British government in the postwar era sought to influence everything from the jobs people did to what they ate and drank, how they saved their money and behaved on the road. Over forty of these posters, produced in the period c. 1945–75, have been selected from an extensive collection in The National Archives and are published in a handy format that enables each one to be detached. For some, the exhortations to wash your hands, eat potatoes or follow the Green Cross Code will evoke their childhood; ood; for others, the posters will provide a fascinating piece of social history and a chronicle of changing graphic styles. But as Dr Hester Vaizey observes, behind them all is the question of the role government should play in people’s lives – a subject that is still hotly debated.

Susan Herbert Pre-Raphaelite painting takes on a certain feline charm Susan Herbert’s feline versions of famous paintings have delighted cat and art lovers everywhere, and her unique interpretations are perfectly suited to the ever-popular works of the Pre-Raphaelite painters. The epitome of their style and period, these paintings by such artists as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt affect the viewer in new and entrancing ways when their protagonists are endearingly rendered cats. The Beggar Maid, ‘more beautiful than day’ in Tennyson’s poem, takes on a particularly touching relationship with King Cophetua, while Medea gives new meaning to the word enchantress as she prepares the ingredients for a spell. And were ever two creatures so afraid and abandoned as the poor cat princes wickedly imprisoned in the Tower, or two lovers so sad and stoical as the young officer cat and his fiancée on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo? This charming book, newly available in paperback, includes small black-and-white reproductions of all the original paintings that inspired Susan Herbert.
