Frank Auerbach Speaking and Painting Catherine Lampert Catherine Lampert is an independent curator and art historian, and was director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London from 1988 to 2001. She is the curator of the Auerbach retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn and Tate Britain, 2014–15.

100 illustrations, 78 in colour 22.9 x 15.2cm 240pp ISBN 978 0 500 239254 May

£19.95

An intimate portrait of one of Britain’s greatest living artists In the course of a career covering more than sixty years, Auerbach has established a still growing international reputation for his paintings with their vigorous, precise brushwork. He is also respected as one of modern and contemporary art’s clearest thinkers. Catherine Lampert has had unique access to the artist since 1978, when she first became one of his sitters. With an emphasis on Auerbach ‘speaking’, drawn from her conversations with him and from published and archival interviews, she gives a rare insight into his professional life, working methods and philosophy. Auerbach also reflects on the places, people and experiences that have shaped his life. These include arriving in Britain as a nearly-8-year-old refugee from Nazi Germany in 1939, finding his way in the London art world of the 1950s and 1960s, his friendships with Leon Kossoff, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, among others, and his approaches to painting. The text is complemented by illustrations of Auerbach’s paintings and drawings as well as by images from the studio and personal photographs that have never been published before. Art 5

Drawing People The Human Figure in Contemporary Art Roger Malbert An intelligent, sensitive and beautifully illustrated survey of contemporary artists who place drawing and the human form at the heart of their practice The act of drawing has long been considered the foundation of an artistic education, and the life class essential to the formation of an artist’s style and technique. Yet in the contemporary art world drawing is increasingly regarded as a medium in its own right, and the figure as a subject for ongoing exploration well beyond the sketchbook. Featuring an international roster of over seventy artists working with pencil, ink, crayon, watercolour and charcoal, Drawing People brings to life one of the most creatively rich and emotionally powerful forms of art being made today. An introduction places the medium of drawing in its historical context, discussing its intersection with photography, painting, collage and illustration. Five chapters – Body, Self, Personal Lives, Social Reality and Fictions – include short introductions outlining each theme, followed by commentaries on individual artists exploring their style, ideas and techniques, accompanied by finely reproduced images of their recent work. Roger Malbert is Senior Curator, Hayward Touring, at the Hayward Gallery, London. He has been a judge for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and his writing on art has featured in The Independent, Art Monthly, Times Literary Supplement, The Art Newspaper and Modern Painters.

Sheds new light on one of the most influential yet little-seen works of the last century, Jackson Pollock’s monumental Mural Jackson Pollock’s Mural, created early in his career in 1943, is a vast panorama spanning a 6-metre-long canvas – the largest painting he ever made. Mural marked a watershed for Pollock: a presentiment of the epic scale, complexity, energy and ambition of the work ahead. David Anfam considers the manifold influences on Pollock that led to this landmark achievement – including the context of the American West, his hitherto little-known relationship with Clyfford Still and the importance of wartime action photography. He also traces the explosive magnetism Mural exerted over the emergent Abstract Expressionists and its legacy for painters and sculptors as diverse as Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, David Smith, Richard Serra and Brice Marden. Indeed, David Anfam argues that the work’s wider impact on post-war American art is comparable to that of Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon on European modernism in the first half of the twentieth century.

The definitive anthology of writings on women artists by Linda Nochlin, one of the most influential voices in feminist art history Since the 1970s, Linda Nochlin has pioneered a radical approach to the history of art that focuses on the impact of gender on both the creation and the appreciation of art. This book features all her most important essays from the last forty years, whether on women artists or on the broader issues of women’s role in the arts. Included are her major thematic texts ‘Women Artists After the French Revolution’ and ‘Starting from Scratch: The Beginnings of Feminist Art History’, as well as her seminal 1971 essay ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’ and its rejoinder, published thirty years later. An introduction by Maura Reilly provides an overview of Nochlin’s life and work and an analysis of her impact and continuing influence on younger scholars, and a specially commissioned interview with Nochlin investigates the status of women artists today. Cy Twombly Late Paintings 2003–2011 Nela Pavlouskova Nela Pavlouskova is Czech and studied art aesthetics at the University of Paris 1 Sorbonne, where she wrote her PhD thesis on the work of Cy Twombly. She lives in Paris.

The first detailed analysis of the late paintings of Cy Twombly Beginning in 2003, when Twombly was seventy-five years old, a fresh surge of creativity brought new physicality into his art. Characterized by monumentality and flamboyant colour, these works often use large formats to accommodate broad and sweeping motions. Sometimes their surfaces are dense and heavily worked; sometimes they are expressively fluid, incorporating chance elements such as extravagant drips of paint. Favoured motifs such as ships, flowers and mythological references are revisited in new contexts and allowed to interact in unusual ways. Like his earlier output, however, these images continue to engage viewers in an active dialogue, resisting easy interpretation and offering up multiple layers of potential meaning. For Twombly, the very action of painting was fundamental: it was the moment when physical impulses and visual imagination came together on the canvas. Concluding with the series known as The Last Paintings, completed a few months before his death in 2011, these are memorable works in which the gestural intensity of this great artist is vividly preserved.

Agnes Martin Her Life and Art Nancy Princenthal Nancy Princenthal has been writing about contemporary art for more than twenty-five years and was a senior editor at Art in America for five years. She has also written for the New York Times, the Village Voice, Artforum and Bookforum.

38 illustrations, 33 in colour 24.0 x 16.5cm 304pp ISBN 978 0 500 093900 May

£24.95

The first biography of the visionary artist Agnes Martin, one of the most original and influential painters of the postwar period Over the course of a career that spanned fifty years, Agnes Martin’s austere, serene work anticipated and helped to define Minimalism, even as she battled psychological crises and carved out a solitary existence in the American Southwest. ‘I paint with my back to the world’, she claimed; when she died at ninety-two, in Taos, New Mexico, it is said she had not read a newspaper in half a century. Nancy Princenthal tells her whole story chronologically – from Martin’s birth in Saskatchewan and her early years as an artist, living in derelict Manhattan shipping lofts with Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly and others of their ilk as neighbours; to the seven years she stopped painting, just as her career was taking off; the months she spent roaming the country in a pickup truck; and her last thirty years, in Taos some of that time, in an adobe house she built with her own hands. Nancy Princenthal has written the essential Agnes Martin biography; a must-read for anyone interested in abstract painting or the history of women artists in America. Art 13

Joscelyn Godwin New in paperback, the acclaimed book on a man who dominated the intellectual world of the 17th century ‘Magisterial ... a beautiful, absorbing and utterly wonderful book’ Times Higher Education Athanasius Kircher (1602–80) was acknowledged to be the most learned man of his age. By profession a Jesuit priest, he made himself an authority on every subject under (and above) the sun and published the results of his research in over thirty lavishly illustrated volumes in Latin. His museum in Rome was famous and visited by everybody in the world of learning: he remains a key figure in the history of ideas. But while every other aspect of his thought has been studied, the fascinating engravings with which he illustrated his ideas have been largely ignored. This book fills that gap. With over 400 illustrations, each with a detailed commentary, it proves how much more we still have to learn from this eccentric genius. Joscelyn Godwin’s unrivalled mastery of his subject gives a sure underpinning to the presentation of hundreds of engravings through which Kircher prepared his ideas and through which we can see the mind of one of the most remarkable thinkers who has ever lived.

Fornasetti Practical Madness Patrick Mauriès Patrick Mauriès is a writer, publisher and collector. He is the author of Fornasetti: Designer of Dreams and Cabinets of Curiosities.

c. 350 colour illustrations 33.0 x 19.0cm 288pp ISBN 978 0 500 239377 April

£50.00

A new evaluation of one of the most inventive designers of the twentieth century Piero Fornasetti was a master of the decorative imagination. His motifs conjure up the illusionism of Arcimboldo, the grand architectural fantasies of Piranesi and Palladio, and something of the wit of Pirandello or even Picasso. Fornasetti’s decorations transform furniture, created in collaboration with Gio Ponti, into art objects touched by trompe l’oeil humour. His designs endure in an astonishing variety of forms: chairs, desks, screens, pianos, plates, masks and other objects all present the artist’s timeless vocabulary. Fornasetti’s endless invention is celebrated here in a book published to coincide with a major retrospective exhibition in Paris. His visual puns and decorative devices are set out in the context of his paintings, little considered until now. Bibliophilia occupies centre stage, with graphic schemes, designs for imaginary libraries and bookcases set in ironic interiors. The book gathers a plentiful array of his famous Themes and Variations, a series of plate designs drawing on over 500 variations on the face of a famous operatic beauty. A full chronology of Fornasetti’s life and work accompanies the text. Art 17

Specially commissioned photography and artwork accompanies step-by-step guides to the creative use of pen and ink, oils and acrylics, while profiles of contemporary artists provide insight into various working methods, materials and techniques. Hundreds of international examples, chosen from the late 19th century to the 20th, are brought together in a compact package that will provide endless inspiration for typographical ideas. Drawn from the authors’ personal collections, and packed with examples from a broad range of locations and objects – construction hoardings, footlockers, wine barrels, shipping containers and so much more – Stencil Type represents a unique and highly curated choice based on decades of graphic-design experience and knowledge. Greetings from Retro Design Vintage Graphics Decade by Decade Tony Seddon Tony Seddon is a designer, art director and writer. He has authored and co-authored five books, most recently Thou Shall Not Use Comic Sans: A Designer’s Almanac of Dos and Don’ts.

Illustrated in colour throughout 24.6 x 19.0cm 224pp ISBN 978 0 500 241479 February

A lively history of graphic design in the 20th century: a valuable resource and fount of inspiration for all designers Designers are often asked to evoke styles from the past. But just what makes a true 1950s look, as opposed to a 1930s or 1940s look? This book addresses that question by offering a lively survey of graphic design’s development over the course of the 20th century. The book is introduced by a series of illustrated timelines highlighting the century’s movements, visual trends and technological breakthroughs, with pointers towards influences from other fields such as politics, technology and architecture. Ten chapters then follow, each devoted to one decade. Thorough and vibrantly illustrated analyses of its key styles are augmented by profiles of its most influential graphic designers, from Herbert Bayer and A. M. Cassandre through Alvin Lustig and Paul Rand to Tibor Kalman and David Carson. Information about the typefaces and colour palettes that defined each decade, and step-by-step guides to recreating key looks and styles using modern software, are also included.

The first ever book to focus solely on the great outpouring of graphic design from California during the twentieth century According to the cliché, California is the place where anything goes and everyone does their own thing. Maybe that’s because everyone knows that in California there’s no terra firma: earthquakes, mudslides, fires, and the occasional civil uprising cause constant upheaval and change. It is also legendary as fertile ground for creativity, freedom, and social consciousness, where the status quo undergoes constant renovation. This book is the first to capture the enormous body of distinctive and visually ecstatic graphic design that emanated from this great state throughout most of the twentieth century. Edited and designed by graphic designer Louise Sandhaus, and with essays by design experts Denise Gonzales Crisp, Lorraine Wild and Michael Worthington, this raucous gathering of smart, offbeat, groundbreaking graphic design from the ‘Left Coast’ will amaze readers with its breadth and richness.

A street-smart guide to branding and consumption in the new ‘Unbrandable’ world The worlds of branding and consumption are changing. Helping to set the agenda are what Adam N. Stone designates the ‘Unbrandables’, consumers who are sensitive to inauthenticity, hostile to relentless materialism, and suspicious of products they do not want or that harm the environment. Then there are the brands determined to show that honesty, transparency and a concern for the planet and their customers’ needs are essential when connecting with a more sceptical audience. Unbrandable provides advertising and marketing professionals with an invaluable guide to this new landscape. Divided into fifty-five easy-toassimilate sections, the book examines what it means to be ‘Unbrandable’, and how companies can thrive by taking a more creative, authentic approach to promoting their goods. Each section focuses on a brand that works, an industry professional who demonstrates the new approaches, an individual who can articulate better than any focus group what the new consumer wants, or a place that itself flourishes on ‘Unbrandable’ principles. Edited by Oscar Riera Ojeda • Foreword by Richard Meier • Introduction by Jesús Aparicio • Interview by Manuel Blanco • Epilogue by David Chipperfield A monograph on one of the world’s great contemporary architects Alberto Campo Baeza, one of architecture’s most distinguished voices, is renowned for a body of work that exemplifies the power of radical simplicity. His buildings have ranged in scale from such small but beautiful residential structures as the Turégano, Gaspar and De Blas houses, to cultural facilities such as Andalucia’s Museum of Memory in Granada, an addition to his earlier achievement, the Caja General Savings Bank. All share an uncompromising dedication to simple composition, and demonstrate the ways in which he so brilliantly deploys disciplined restraint to achieve architectural silence in the face of the clamour of the modern city. Covering four decades of practice, this superbly produced monograph includes critical commentaries on Campo Baeza’s persistent quest for beauty and relevance through his adherence to clarity and a deeply felt devotion to modernist principles of architecture.

The Japanese House Reinvented Philip Jodidio Philip Jodidio is internationally renowned as one of the most popular writers on architecture. He is the author of numerous books, including monographs on Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel and Zaha Hadid.

Illustrated in colour throughout 27.8 x 20.0cm 304pp ISBN 978 0 500 343081 May

£35.00

A significant overview of recent Japanese residential architecture Japanese houses have to contend with very particular constraints, from tiny plots in crowded urban contexts to ever-present seismic threats. These challenges encourage their architects to explore ideas of stability and ephemerality in various ways, resulting in spaces that are as fascinating as they are idiosyncratic. Their formal innovation and attention to materials, technology and measures to coax in light and air while maintaining domestic privacy make them cutting-edge residences that suggest new ways of being at home. This overview of fifty recent houses powerfully demonstrates Japan’s enduring commitment to design innovation. It includes projects by three Pritzker Prize-winners – Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban and Kazuyo Sejima – as well as lesser known but no less exciting up-and-coming architects. Each house is clearly illustrated in crisp colour photographs and plans, and accompanied by texts from Philip Jodidio, the internationally renowned critic. It confirms contemporary Japanese architecture as a substantial force on the international scene. Architecture 35

The Course of Landscape Architecture A History of our Designs on the Natural World, from Prehistory to the Present Christophe Girot A masterful and hugely ambitious new interpretation of human intervention on the landscape, from ancient antecedents to its most contemporary manifestations In many ways the history of civilization is a history of our relationship with nature and landscape. In this book, Christophe Girot chronicles this intimate connection, drawing on all aspects of mankind’s creativity and ingenuity, and bringing together the key stories that have shaped our manmade landscapes. Starting from the dual inclination to clear land for cultivation and to enclose space for protection – the forest clearing and the walled garden – there emerges a vital and multifaceted narrative that describes our cultural relationship to, and dependence on, the landscape, right up to the present day. Organized chronologically, the chapters consist of a thematic essay that ties together the central developments, as well as a case study illustrated with specially commissioned photographs and meticulously detailed 3D re-creations showing the featured site in its original context. Christophe Girot is Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture, Department of Architecture, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. His work has been widely published and exhibited including in ‘Groundswell’ in 2005, the first exhibition on Landscape Architecture at MoMA in New York, and the 2007 exhibition on European Landscape at Harvard. 650 illustrations, 500 in colour 30.0 x 25.0cm 304pp ISBN 978 0 500 342978 May

Open Source Architecture Carlo Ratti with Matthew Claudel Carlo Ratti is one of the most influential design thinkers of his generation. A lucid and timely treatise that makes a powerful case for how and why architecture must change in the 21st century Ever since Modernism, architecture has been about grand utopian visions and trophy buildings – often at the expense of those who must inhabit them. But this model, often driven by the architect’s ego, is changing in the digital world. This provocative book argues that it is high time the practice of architecture adopted a networked, collaborative, inclusive model inspired by 21st-century trends such as crowd-sourcing, open access and mass customization. Designers can work together and interact with the eventual users of their creations in an iterative feedback loop that leads to better design, better user-experience and more sustainable buildings. But how can collaborative design avoid becoming design-by-committee? Carlo Ratti and Matthew Claudel deftly navigate this and other vital questions, considering along the way the applications of open-source architecture conceptually and in practice. Brimming with big ideas in a highly readable text, this book is perfectly tuned to students and open-minded professionals seeking new perspectives.

Books and book culture are triumphantly alive across the globe, in out-of-the-way places and in unexpected forms: here is the perfect gift for everyone who sells, buys or borrows books From the rise of the egalitarian Little Free Library movement (motto: ‘Take a book, return a book’) to the growth in luxury hotel libraries, Alex Johnson – whose parents were both librarians – maps out the history and future of the 21st-century library revolution in seven thematic chapters, each consisting of a brief essay followed by illustrated project profiles. Whether by bike in Chicago or by donkey in Colombia, librarians all over the world are coming up with astonishingly ingenious ways of ensuring their books reach the people who need them. Many of these new libraries function as community centres, and assist their members in overcoming economic, social and political barriers. Others provide an unexpected dose of culture for travellers and commuters – or even prisoners. Elsewhere, architects are designing monumental public libraries without walls, and prefabricated home libraries that can be assembled in an ordinary back garden. Whether you’re at an airport, a park, a café or in the wilds, you can still find just the right book – all for free.

Denny Now available in a compact edition, this book by Walter Denny presents a panoramic overview of a spectacular artform Covering both Iznik pièces de forme and the famous Iznik tiles that decorate Ottoman imperial monuments, Iznik integrates the entire spectrum of Iznik production, both tiles and wares, and the broader artistic tradition in which it originated. Walter B. Denny begins with a description of the particular nature of Islamic art under the Ottoman empire, as well as the methods of the craftsmen who worked under the imperial auspices. He then examines the links between the court style of Istanbul and the ceramic ateliers in Iznik itself, and the crucial role of the dominant styles of the golden age of Iznik ceramics and their most famous creators, Shah Kulu and Kara Memi. Lavishly illustrated throughout, the book showcases the array of motifs – floral, vegetal and figurative – used on Iznik wares, looks at the relationship between non-Muslim communities and the Ottoman empire, and closes with an examination of the rich stylistic heritage that Iznik ceramics have given to Western art.

Foreword by Yves Mikaeloff

Available again, the first book to document thoroughly carpet design within the context of early 20th-century art ‘An impressive achievement. Carefully researched and scholarly, it is clearly structured and lucidly written, which makes for a highly enjoyable read’ Crafts The design revolutions of the early 20th century were woven into the very fabric of the carpets and rugs of that era. Carpets of the Art Deco Era, previously published as Art Deco and Modernist Carpets and now reissued in PLC, is the most in-depth history on the subject. It charts the evolution of carpet design out of the floral effusions of the Victorian salons and into the angular elegance of Art Deco and bold abstraction of Modernism popularized by the machine age. Such artists and designers as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Matisse, Klee, and many more advanced the designs going on underfoot, making these rugs extremely collectible artworks in their own right. Generously sized and beautifully illustrated with 250 colour photographs, here are Art Deco carpets at their most glorious.

Memento Mori The Dead Among Us Paul Koudounaris Paul Koudounaris is the author of The Empire of Death, an in-depth history of charnel houses and ossuaries, and Heavenly Bodies, a study of lavishly decorated Baroque skeletons originally from the Roman Catacombs.

A journey to the world’s most macabre sites from the author of Heavenly Bodies and The Empire of Death Paul Koudounaris ventures beyond the grave in this spectacular and thought-provoking survey of human remains used in decorative, commemorative or devotional contexts across the world today. From Bolivia’s ‘festival of the little pug-nosed ones’, where skulls are festooned with flowers and given cigarettes, to Indonesian families who dress mummies and include them in their household routine, via naturally preserved Buddhist monks and memorials to recent genocides, this dramatic book defies taboo to demonstrate how the dead live on across the globe. The book’s inventive visual presentation by top design studio Barnbrook rejects gloomy clichés in favour of bright colours, delicate frames and eloquent motifs that echo some of the folk traditions featured in these pages. Koudounaris is a gifted narrator, vividly recounting the stories and traditions that lie behind his ghoulish but beautiful photographs, which reveal that in many places, the realms of the living and the dead are nowhere near so distinct as Western society would have us believe.

A major contribution to cultural history: a compellingly written account by a world authority on a subject that touches us all Ranging widely in space and time and hugely ambitious in its scope, this book examines the most critical questions about madness, the challenges it poses to society and our responses to it. Through twelve chapters organized chronologically, from antiquity to today, from the Bible to Freud, from exorcism to mesmerism, from Bedlam to Victorian asylums, from the theory of humours to modern pharmacology, Andrew Scull writes powerfully of the manifestations of madness, its meanings, its consequences and our various attempts to understand and treat it. Insanity haunts the human imagination, and writers and artists have repeatedly been drawn to the subject, in drama, opera, novels, autobiography, and in the visual arts; the book is imaginatively illustrated with copious examples from all these, in both words and images. Written in a highly readable narrative style by a leading scholar hailed as ‘one of the pre-eminent historians of psychiatry in the world today’, this book will quickly become recognized as a landmark volume.

The perfect introduction for the modern reader to the world of Celtic myth and legend The new instalment in Thames & Hudson’s ‘Myths’ series introduces the world of the Celts, their gods and goddesses, heroes, monsters and villains. As well as vividly exploring the tales, the author brings her expertise in the archaeology of the Iron Age and particularly shamanism to bear on the mythical worlds she describes, with evidence as diverse as the Gundestrup Cauldron and the famous bog bodies. Starting with a discussion of how myths are transmitted and by whom, the author continues with an account of the Irish and Welsh myths and their key actors and motifs, before moving on to consider themes such as heroes, animals, women, environment and the Otherworld. In her finale, the author asks how the myths survived the Christianization of Europe and looks at the influence of monastic chroniclers on the tales, which they preserved and adapted. A perfect gift, The Celtic Myths is accessible for readers new to Celtic mythology, but satisfyingly detailed in its analysis of contexts, cultures and archaeology for those well versed in the stories.

£32.00

A scholarly but accessible account of the remarkable influence of ancient Greek culture across Asia This book, by Britain’s most distinguished historian of ancient Greek art, recounts the influence of Greek communities and their culture through Central Asia, India and Western China, from the Bronze Age through to the rise of Islam. Boardman examines a wealth of art and artifacts as well as literary sources to reveal the remarkable influence of Greek culture upon peoples – Anatolians, Levantines, Persians, Asiatics, Indians, Chinese – whose settled civilizations were far older, with their own strong traditions in life, government and the arts. The Greeks were not empire-builders. They did not seek to conquer or rule. However, they were highly literate and adept at trade; they spread a monetary economy through Eurasia; their religion was easily adapted to that of others; their art developed a form of narrative that was to be dominant for centuries to come; and their poets and philosophers were widely respected outside their homeland. This is a scholarly text, but pithily and accessibly written. It is the culmination of decades of work on the influence of the Greeks outside their home territory.

New discoveries of spectacular stucco sculptures at El Zotz and Holmul reveal surprising aspects of Maya royalty; the Classic Maya themselves can be understood as occupants of royal courts, full of Machiavellian intrigue yet operating in close communion with gods and cosmos. Just-discovered texts at Xultun show a strong concern with astronomy and numerology, as well as evidence of lost books. Other finds include the discovery in an underwater cavern of the earliest known occupant of the region, the Hoyo Negro girl, and new evidence for the first architecture at Ceibal. The Maya highlights the vitality of current scholarship into this brilliant civilization.

A truly groundbreaking book that supersedes all previous literature on the subject The warp-faced weaves of the Andes are the most complex in the world. While existing studies of Andean textiles use a technical language derived from other textile traditions, this book takes as its starting point the technical terms in the Aymara and Quechua languages used by Andean weavers themselves. The result is a completely new way of understanding one of the great craft traditions of the world. Denise Y. Arnold and Elvira Espejo have worked with weavers across the region to understand this language and have studied more than 700 textile samples in top-class museums and collections. Theirs is a highly technical book that sets out their alternative classification system via tables, photographs and diagrams, but it is also a celebration of one of the most gorgeous weaving traditions in the world. It will be of great interest to practical weavers, museum curators, anthropologists, art historians, archaeologists, and anyone with a love for Latin America and its rich craft traditions.

The Amazing Diversity of Living Creatures Ross Piper New in paperback, Ross Piper’s acclaimed exploration of the animal kingdom in all its profusion and glory, featuring the full, astounding range of species and lineages ‘From the truly bizarre to the dazzlingly beautiful, the natural world retains the ability to amaze, something that Ross Piper … has set out to capture in his book’ The Times The animal kingdom is staggeringly diverse, but the animals that most easily spring to mind – the tigers, elephants, eagles and crocodiles, or perhaps amphibians, fish, insects and even humans – account for only a tiny proportion of known species. What’s more, there are estimated to be many tens of millions still unknown to science. Animal Earth is an unbiased tour of this world, highlighting the bizarre appearances, hidden lives and mostly small scale of the creatures with whom we share our planet. Every species is an integral component of the ecosystem we live in, and as intelligent beings it is our duty to protect and understand animal diversity not only for its own sake but also to maintain the natural systems that keep us and everything else alive.

‘A splendid, indeed brilliant book … the first comprehensive account of those three historic figures’ Wade Davis, winner of the 2012 Samuel Johnson Prize

Naturalists in Paradise Wallace, Bates and Spruce in the Amazon John Hemming John Hemming was Director of the Royal Geographical Society for over twenty years. Among his many other books are Tree of Rivers and Monuments of the Incas, both published by Thames & Hudson.

79 illustrations, 20 in colour 23.5 x 17.2cm 368pp ISBN 978 0 500 252109 March

£19.95

A brilliantly told account of the travels and travails of three of the nineteenth century’s outstanding scientists Alfred Russel Wallace, Henry Walter Bates and Richard Spruce were English naturalists who went to Amazonia 150 years ago. This book is the first to combine the young men’s experiences of the Amazon, drawing heavily on their own letters and books. All three explored an unknown river and had many thrilling adventures: violent attacks of malaria, fearful rapids, murder attempts, encounters with indigenous peoples, shipwrecks, and many other hardships. In addition to their huge contributions to knowledge of the Amazonian environment, each is particularly famous for one discovery. Wallace is acknowledged as a co-discoverer, along with Charles Darwin, of the theory of evolution. Bates discovered protective mimicry among insects, a phenomenon named after him. Spruce transported the quininebearing Cinchona tree to India, where it saved countless lives from malaria. John Hemming is a brilliant writer of narrative history and a world authority on the Amazon. Naturalists in Paradise is a masterwork of loving and informed storytelling. Natural History 77

The Lost Tribes of Tierra del Fuego Selk’nam, Yamana, Kawésqar Photographs by Martin Gusinde • With texts by Christine Barthe, Marisol Palma Behnke, Anne Chapman and Dominique Legoupil Martin Gusinde (1886–1969) was an ethnographer. Christine Barthe is curator of the photographic collection at the Musée du Quai Branly. Marisol Palma Behnke is a specialist in Latin American ethnographic photography. Anne Chapman was an ethnologist. Dominique Legoupil is a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. 218 tritone photographs 31.0 x 25.0cm 300pp ISBN 9780500544464 March

£55.00

Bewitching photographs documenting lost tribes from the world’s southernmost inhabited regions In 1919 Martin Gusinde was sent as a missionary to Tierra del Fuego by his German congregation. While his mission was ostensibly to convert the native peoples among whom he lived, the opposite took place: Gusinde became one of the first Westerners ever to be initiated into various sacred rites of the inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego. During the course of four trips made between 1919 and 1924, from the canals of Western Patagonia to the great island of Tierra del Fuego, Gusinde took more than one thousand photographs, all produced using a portable darkroom. He captured some truly extraordinary images: feather-clad bodies sporting high headdresses made of bark, wrapped up in guanaco furs, or entirely covered with ritual paint, populating a landscape battered by wind, rain and snow – the heart of a natural world that Darwin had noted for its wildness. Gusinde’s photographs are a monument to the memory of the Tierra del Fuego people as well as an exceptional anthropological document. Photography | Ethnography 79

Extraordinary contemporary photographic portraits by one of Europe’s most exciting young photographers Here is a unique illustrated study of a centuries-old costume tradition that continues to thrive in Brittany today. Charles Fréger has photographed a series of portraits of Breton women wearing costumes and headdresses of endless variety: from high starched towers to elaborately pinned, tucked and embroidered confections of handmade lace, as delicate as they are distinctive. Each costume and headdress may indicate a wearer’s village, as well as age or status. They are worn for celebrations of a marriage, birth, or a local saint’s day, or to mark a period of mourning. Against a translucent gauze backdrop, young girls, women both married and unmarried, mothers, sisters and grandmothers pose in costume for these photographic portraits. Over fifty headdresses are introduced and described in a separate reference section, accompanied by specially commissioned illustrations. Fréger’s exceptional photographs demonstrate a wealth of pride and personal expression that make this book a unique testament to a living tradition.

Stephan Feuchtwang is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics.

£29.95

An exceptional collection of photographs by contemporary Chinese artists responding to the urbanization of their country Through the work of some of the country’s most talented art photographers, this book explores the unprecedented urbanization of China, offering up histories now being destroyed and futures now being invented. A preface and introduction are followed by four chapters, each featuring incisive explanatory text by Jiang Jiehong. The photographers showcase their responses to urbanization using a wide variety of approaches, whether Miao Xiaochun’s photograph of a vast glass building rising like a UFO behind a traditional old neighbourhood; Wang Jinsong’s collages of the Chinese character scrawled on buildings to mark them out as condemned; Zhang Peili’s records of pastiche Western architecture; Xu Zhengqin’s street hoardings showing dream residential and commercial developments; or Wang Chuan’s poetic images of abandoned, half-finished modern buildings. This brave and beautiful compendium of reflections on urban transformation will be a must-have for photography aficionados and anyone with an interest in China or contemporary culture. An affectionate book of portraits of British folklore enthusiasts dressed in their finery and strange spectacular costumes Folklore is a living cultural heritage. Folk beliefs, customs and expressions link the past to the present and help us understand our specific cultures, as well as a shared humanity. Founded on pagan Celtic, Germanic and early Christian roots, British folklore – far from being a quaint anachronism – is thriving, and remains vibrant and relevant by adapting to new circumstances, with the ‘folk’ (people), and the ‘lore’ (stories) continually informing and influencing each other. There are many recorded folk events, rites and customs practised in the UK each year, with some events drawing crowds of thousands. Most involve dance, theatre, music and a fair amount of good-natured revelry. Henry Bourne’s folklore portraits, shot in ‘the wild’ at key events and festivals, take a fond look at the people from Morris dancers to practising witches and warlocks who shy away from a world increasingly disconnected from nature and those who actively celebrate a rich tradition that honours our connection with the seasons, the land and community. A magic window into a world on the verge of collapse 25 years ago, captured before the Wall came down – and before Walmart values ascended Here is a wonderfully deadpan celebration of a unique commercial aesthetic that flourished under the crumbling totalitarian Communist regimes of 20th-century Europe. The book presents more than 170 images, mainly shop window displays, shot by artist David Hlynsky during the final years of the collapsing Soviet empire in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, East Germany and Russia, using a Hasselblad camera to capture the slow, undramatic moments of daily life on the streets. The photographs are accompanied by essays by art historian Martha Langford and cultural studies specialist Jody Berland, as well as Hlynsky’s own account of his time as a flâneur in the shopping plazas of the collapsing Soviet empire, ‘a vast ad-hoc museum of a failing utopia’ that in 1989 began to close for ever. Communist shop windows may long have passed from history into irony, but their distinctive style, handmade charm and implicit critique of modern commercial culture have won them a new generation of fans.

Tokyo Camera Style John Sypal John Sypal has lived in Japan since 2004. A self-professed camera geek, he is photographer and author of the monthly camera-style feature for Nippon Camera Magazine.

Fresh from the fashionable streets of Ginza, Harajuku and Shinjuku, ‘the Sartorialist of the camera world’, John Sypal, introduces us to Tokyo’s trend-setting photography freaks Founded in 2008, the ‘Tokyo Camera Style’ blog has a devoted and passionate international following – and it has spawned a network of copycat blogs worldwide. Now, some 3000 posts later, the man who did it first and the man who does it best selects 300 of his choicest images and puts them between two covers. In street portraits taken on the fly, we see Tokyo’s film-camera enthusiasts posing with their favourite photographic equipment. Often taken from above, faces out of view, these images in Sypal’s signature perspective show us many telling details: the clothes, the jewelry, hands and feet, shoes and socks, customized camera straps, and other photography-related paraphernalia. Individual personalities shine out from every portrait, with the camera taking centre stage. From poptastic plastic to heavy metal, Tokyo Camera Style is a colourful parade of weird and wonderful cameras and their equally weird and wonderful owners. Photography 87

The first book to tap into the growing audience for alternative and analogue photography in its many highly creative forms This book celebrates the new creative processes of the modern photographic era, in which obsolete early analogue processes such as collodion and salt printing are undergoing a widespread revival, and new ones are evolving in combination with digital technology. Specially commissioned photoshoots illustrate easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for some forty technical processes: cameraless techniques such as photograms and camera obscura; pinhole, toy and hand-built cameras; camera hacking; manipulating negatives and printing processes; and postprinting treatments such as mordançage and bleaching. These processes are accompanied by illustrated interviews with practising photographers such as Ackroyd & Harvey, Wayne M. Belger, Binh Danh, Ruth Erdt and Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs. One picture at a time, Experimental Photography compiles a manifesto against visual homogenization.

It Might Be an Apple Shinsuke Yoshitake Introduces philosophical ideas to young children in an out-there way, taking a humorous approach to eternal questions about the meaning of life – and apples

Illustrated in colour throughout 25.7 x 20.5cm 32pp ISBN 978 0 500 650486 April

£7.95

100 Children’s

It Might Be an Apple is a boisterous, philosophical shaggy dog story for young children – and probably a few adults. The story follows a child’s hilarious, wildly inventive train of thought through all the things an apple might be if it is not, in fact, an apple. Distrusting the apple’s convincing appearance, the child’s imagination spirals upwards and outwards into a madcap fantasy world – maybe it’s a planet from outer space with tiny aliens on board? Perhaps it wants a cool hairstyle? Does it feel scared, or snore at night? This book is not only huge fun, but it also encourages a questioning, challenging approach to the world around us. Shinsuke Yoshitake is the author of two other books, Shikamo futa ga nai (And There’s No Lid) and Ja kimi ga suki (In That Case, I Like You).

£12.95

How things work is a hands-on, action-packed book to share with young children. The starting point is the child and the questions they ask about how things work, from how to build a house to what powers a rocket to reach the moon. The title is organized around key questions: What’s it made from? How’s it made? What makes things go? What makes things move? What are sound and light? How do we keep in touch? How big or small? Who does what? There are stacks of things to do both on and off the page, including games, recipes and craft activities. In the same format and successful style as My Head-to-Toe Body Book, My Big World and My Animal Book, all by OKIDO and published by Thames & Hudson, this book is aimed at children of four and over to use at preschool, school and at home. OKIDO is an innovative group of London-based designers, illustrators and authors, who create an art-and-science magazine of the same name for young children.
