Survey: 15% of UCC students report “non–consensual” sexual experience By Eoghan MacNeill news@thecorknews.ie
Over 15 percent of UCC students who responded to an on–campus survey say they have experienced non–consensual sexual contact, accord-
ing to a report published this week. The survey — carried out by Know Offence — further found that over one–third of students surveyed have experienced what they categorised as “unwanted physical contact” in a university setting.
Using a sample of 330 UCC students, the study also found that 82 percent do not know which university authorities they should report a sexual offence to. A campaign has now been set up to highlight the issue of sexual consent among students, aiming to “dispel
some of the myths around sexual violence,” according to campaign officer Lucy Jones. “With cases of sexual violence, you’ll often hear things like: ‘She deserved it,’ or ‘she continued on page 2

T
he effect of having St Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday is that this week has felt like two very short weeks, not quite back to back. Monday, naturally enough, saw a lot of people mentally ‘tune out’ ahead of our national celebration, while the latter half of the week has seemed like a reset, with Wednesday taking on Monday’s usually gruff role and Thursday being pleasantly rather chilled out. Today, of course, is like a bonus Friday: not only is it Friday, but it’s an almost unexpected Friday. Life is good. And what an interesting contrast in the two separate parts of the week! Monday was (if you can cast your mind back that far) a little less than welcoming, and didn’t seem to augur too well for Paddy’s Day. Even Tuesday morning itself was a little grim, with heavy fog blanketing us and muffling both sound and the Springtime sunrise. And then, just in time, those reticent shafts of sunshine, as the grey became a little less grey; the hazy outline of the sun against the thinning clouds, and all of a sudden Spring broke out like a delirious animal which couldn’t wait to be part of the festivities. That moment seems to have marked a transition, almost right in the middle of March. Before, it was Springtime with a “but”. “But” it’s got a little of winter left in it, “but” it’s still a little miserable, “but” you wouldn’t want to go out without a jacket. Since then, though, each day has seen a chilly start giving way to high, bright skies and a feeling of warmth in the breeze. You may think it’s still too cold to be out and about unencumbered by an overcoat, but once you get up to speed you realise that yes, Spring really is here and it’s almost time to start thinking about the Summer. A few minutes later the jacket has to go back on, of course, but it’s a start. We have a bit of a way to go, but this is the week that Winter seems to have really lost its grip on us, and I’ve noticed the effects on everyone since, traditional March 18th hangovers or not. It’s been a welcome boost. From my perch above Carey’s Lane in the city centre I can hear buskers, people whistling as they stomp and trot from Paul Street to Patrick Street, lots of lots of laughter (it’s a pity I missed the joke) and a general buzz of good natured Corkonians going about their business. It’s a great soundtrack to an evening in the office, and I’ve even given Spotify a rest for the sake of feeling more a part of the thrum down in the street below. The Cork News this week has a bit of a skip in its step, discussing rebirth of all kinds and looking ahead with optimism, whether it’s some handy gardening tips in Homes or stories about new schemes opening up for Cork businesses in our News section. Seán Creedon has fun driving a Mini, George Hook has fun being cynical ( just a tad) about Irish politics, and I have fun getting it all together so that hopefully you can have fun reading it! So sit back and relax with your tea, or your coffee, or your few minutes to spare, open up at any given page, and enjoy.

UCC set to focus on ‘consent’ after on–campus survey findings continued from page 1 was dressed a certain way.’ We find these sentiments abhorrent, and want to try combat them,” said Ms Jones, speaking to The Cork News. The campaign is to launch a pamphlet providing information on the definitions of sexual offences, access to justice for victims, and counselling services for those affected by sexual violence. The issue of what constitutes consent underpins much of the Know Offence campaign, which focuses on student activities both on and off campus. “In school, sexual education doesn’t deal with consent,” said Ms Jones. While she highlighted the support the campaign has
received from UCC administration, Ms Jones pointed to significant progress in sexual consent education at a number of a UK universities: “Oxford and Cambridge last year introduced sexual consent classes for incoming freshers, which, depending on which school you were attending, were either compulsory or optional. For Irish universities to take similar steps would be incredibly positive — even if it was just a short introductory talk for incoming students. “It would at least go some way to ensuring similar survey results aren’t recorded again,” she concluded. Meanwhile, UCC Students’ Union President Mark Stanton responded to what he called the “massively worrying” survey results, saying “obviously you don’t want any students to
go through these kinds of experiences. We had touched on the issue of consent as part of our 45–minute orientation for incoming freshers, and would certainly consider expanding this focus in the future,” he told The Cork News. “The figures reported from the Know Offence survey are a real concern and point to a need for greater understanding of the issues involved in negotiating, agreeing, declining and participating in sexual activity,” said Dr Michael Byrne, head of UCC’s Student Health Department, remarking that they “further highlight the need that individuals recognise the responsibility to explicitly determine and subsequently accept another individual’s choices” with regard to intimate and physical contact. Dr Byrne told The Cork News
that the university is currently exploring the development of pilot workshops around the issue of sexual consent in association with researchers at NUIG. UCC has urged any student who believes that they have been the victim of a sexual assault to contact the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital and to consider reporting the matter to An Garda Síochána. “The Student Health Department and the Student Counselling Department in UCC are also available for support and guidance… and advice on how you might disclose or report the incident,” concluded Dr Byrne. The Know Offence information pamphlet launch is to be held in UCC on Monday, March 23rd at 6.30pm.
Ireland’s recovery bypasses Cork – new report Ireland’s reported economic recovery has bypassed the Cork–Kerry region, with 94 percent of last year’s newlycreated 29,000 jobs based in the greater Dublin area, according to a new report. The finding was published in the Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI) quarterly bulletin, which also found that 38.8 percent of private sector employees are classified as low paid, in com-
parison with only 10.5 percent of private employees. The report also found that 25 percent of employees earn less than €11.45 per hour. Of these, nearly two out of three are women, who remain lower paid than men. “Big business is deciding to invest in the region with the most developed infrastructure, and the readiest access to British and European markets, and many of these
jobs are low-paid with poor working conditions,” said Cork Anti–Austerity Alliance Councillor Mick Barry. Further examination of the NERI report reveals a continuing trend for what’s been termed ‘internal migration’, which has seen counties all over Ireland, including Cork, decreasing in working population as people move to Dublin. Referring to nearly 9,000
applicants waiting on the Cork City Council housing list, Councillor Barry appealed for major government investment in the city and county: “Clearly, there is a need for a major need for a government social house-building programme. Not only would this provide homes for those in need, it would provide employment and training,” he said.

Study shows new attitudes of Cork teens By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
Cork has the highest number of teens using Tinder in the country. According to a study by Irish study website Studyclix.ie, which surveyed almost 5,000 secondary school students, 22% of Cork teens revealed they are users of the dating app, well over the national average of 13%. Studyclix co–founder and secondary school teacher Luke Saunders stated he was “shocked” by the statistics, with some teens as young as 13 saying they have an active profile on Tinder. “This calls in to question online safety for our students,” he said. Increased exposure to cyber–dating puts teens at a higher risk of victimisation and cyber–bullying, and almost one quarter of the students surveyed had witnessed an example of cyber–bullying in the last school year. The highest rate of cyber–bullying was found in counties Wicklow and Westmeath with a figure of 38%, while in Cork almost three in ten (28%) said they had experienced the
“This calls in to question online safety for our students.”
Studyclix.ie stats 56% of students surveyed say school has been the most stressful thing in their life over the last year. 55% feel they are ‘addicted’ to their phones. 41% feel they will need to emigrate for work at some point in the future. 24% have experienced cyber–bullying in the last school year. 80% would like to see the Same Sex Marriage referendum passed. 13% are active on an online dating website.
22% of Cork students have active Tinder accounts phenomenon, higher than the average of 24%. “The rates of cyber-bullying were high as well, and perhaps unusually seemed to increase outside of the urban centres, which suggests to me that we have a long battle ahead when it comes to tackling this and other online issues,” added Mr Saunders.
Other statistics from the survey revealed that 52% of Cork students believe they will emigrate at some point in
the future, the second–highest number of teens expressing a desire to move away from home. Only Waterford
had a higher percentage, with 54% of students stating they want to spend time abroad when they leave school.
Interestingly, Cork’s teenagers are notably fond of the Irish language, with 55% of Cork students saying they believe Irish should be compulsory in school; far more than the 43% national average with the same sentiment. Mr Saunders stated the survey was conducted as a means to better understanding secondary school students, “what makes them tick, and what are the chief concerns and issues shared by this important section of Irish citizens”.

The price of dignity Cork families plead for home adaptations By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
A Cork mother has pleaded for dignity for her disabled child. Monica Cambridge’s eight–year–old daughter Leah has Canavan disease, which causes progressive damage to nerve cells in the brain, meaning that Leah has no mobility and is totally dependent. Monica’s Hollyhill home is unsuitable for her child’s needs, and she is seeking a Housing Adaptation Grant for a downstairs extension to include a bedroom and wet room. She has yet to receive the grant, which was approved over two years ago. “I constantly need to lift her in and out of the wheelchair, and I have to put her on the table to clean her down, as she can’t go in the bath for the
last year,” explained Monica. “When I wash her hair, I have to lay her on the cooker and put her head in the sink. If I had the downstairs bathroom and bedroom at least the hoist would be doing all the work for me.” Monica added that on occasions, she is also forced to sleep downstairs with Leah on the sofa as she doesn’t have the strength to carry her upstairs. “It’s a disgrace, I don’t even have the words to describe it,” she said. “I am paying rent every week for a house that is not suitable for me.” Monica is not seeking home care hours but just “comfort” for her child: “I have help from my family and don’t need nurses, but I don’t have the support from the council,” she said, adding that she will not be physically able to carry Leah for much longer.
“It is wrong that the State and the Local Authority are not providing support “ Senator Colm Burke
Cork City Council outlined that funding of disabled works on local authority properties, including extensions, is handled by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, supplemented by City Council funds when available. “Funding over the past number of years has not
been sufficient to respond to increasing needs for these works,” said the council, noting that 57 properties are awaiting extensions. Since 2011, it has received €391,971 in funding and completed nine extensions. The present waiting time for extensions to Cork City Council properties is eight years.

on the Commons Road was approved in July 2008 and the family has filed a complaint with the Children’s Ombudsman over the delay. “Lacey has severe physical and intellectual disabilities. Every day she has to be lifted out of bed, washed, clothed and tube fed, and her parents have provided this care for her to the highest possible standard,” the senator told The Cork News. “It is wrong that the State and the Local Authority are not providing support and responding to their needs.” Senator Burke raised the issue in the Seanad this week, proposing the appointment of Disability Officers with specific responsibility to deal with individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities who are resident in local authority houses. Section 26 of the Disability Act 2005 provides that each local authority must appoint an Access Officer, but Cork City Council confirmed to The Cork News that no Disability Access Officer is attached to the local authority.

Cork Labour TDs criticise JobBridge report Two Cork Labour TDs have questioned the findings of last week’s National Youth Council of Ireland’s (NYCI) report on JobBridge. The report found that 27 percent of respondents secured full–time employment on completion of their internship, and that 44 percent of interns felt the scheme is an exercise in free labour. Minister Seán Sherlock (pictured, left), Cork East, criticised the methodology of the report, which used a sample of 472 interns, noting that since July 2011 “37,700 internship placements have commenced. Since the peak of the unemployment crisis at 15.1 percent in 2012, 100,000 more people are back at work and the unemployment rate has fallen to 10.5 percent by February. “We have ring–fenced €373 million for community employment. We spend €82 million on JobBridge – 7% of the
“We spend €82 million on JobBridge – 7% of the budget for employment supports.” budget for employment supports.” Sherlock, Minister at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, maintained the internship programme has been a success, highlighting an evaluation report that saw 89 percent of interns state the programme had given them
new skills. Meanwhile, Cork South West TD Michael McCarthy (pictured, right) said while a number of the NYCI’s suggestions for reform are already part of the programme, others would not be possible: “It is not possible to increase the top–up payment from €50 to €100. A person on €188 per
week with a top–up of €100 for a 30 hour week would be close to €12 an hour,” he said. Deputy McCarthy continued that restricting access for potential employers to the scheme “would create an unnecessary administrative hurdle and remove the flexibility that has made JobBridge the
success it is.” Both of the Cork TDs highlighted an Indecon survey of 2,634 interns, which found a 61 percent rate of progression into employment after five months. Of this 60 percent, 26 percent found employment with their host company.

Hook uncorked Will Renua bring about a new era in Irish politics, asks George, or will it still be 'business as usual' after the next general election? george@thecorknews.ie
I
t is often said that “politics is the art of compromise”; it’s an idea the Irish political system could benefit greatly from. Even a cursory examination of the political ideas of ‘the left’ shows they are simplistic nonsense, as does cursory examination of the political ideas of ‘the right’. Workable solutions take elements from both sides. Workable solutions eschew ideologues. Workable solutions come from politicians who realise they represent all constituents, not just the ones who voted for them. Politics is about negotiating consensus and cooperation between factions. The effective politician is pragmatic and pragmatism welcomes compromise. Unfortunately for Labour, its idea of compromise has been to bend the stronger hand of its government bedfellow. Certainly, under Eamon Gilmore, there was little to distinguish between Labour’s contribution to austerity to that of Fine Gael. Joan Burton has had scarce time and too little space to manoeuvre her way out of her predecessor’s commitments. Will she be afforded the opportunity to shine in any future government? Or will Labour disappear down the same, defunct road as the Greens? But what of the new player in the political game? Where will Lucinda Creighton and Renua win support for their core values of “egalitarianism, equality of opportunity and social solidarity”? Is it from the ranks of the deserted and disgusted? Jaded by the latest coalition’s disappointments on political reform, the voters have flocked in larger numbers to the independents, the single issue ‘mini-parties’. Deserting the Fianna Fáil implosion, many have bolstered the ranks of Sinn Féin – trading

logic for hope. Since all politics is local, perhaps it’s much simpler for the disaffected to focus on one small local issue than to struggle with complex manifestos from the old reliables. It’s easier on the brain. Are you really going to renew your trust in the people and parties
that have demonstrably lost your confidence? There’s always space in the Irish political spectrum for a shiny new party, especially one that clothes itself in high aspirations and noble ideals. As a nation we relish the cut and thrust of debating the art of the possible. Forget about
the specifics of policies; give me the promise of hope for a better future and I’m with you. Look at Sinn Féin. They consistently trade on a promise of hope, but for how much longer? It must be difficult to hold a torch for change with one hand, while batting away
lights into a darker past with another. Mary Lou McDonald appears to have done herself few favours with blind loyalty to an increasingly embattled leader. Empty apologies are starting to ring hollow, even among the most ardent republican factions. How many
scandals does it take to bring down a party? So, when you ask where Renua will get their support, consider this: It’s nearly 30 years ago that Des O’Malley formed the Progressive Democrats as a shiny new party, fresh with high ideals and a new agenda. The PDs became a cornerstone in four coalition governments starting in 1987, even though they never got more than 12% of the vote. They were also born of one man’s disaffection with the status quo at that time. And at a time when the balance of power looks precarious, it’s simpler to coalesce with a small party than with a bunch of single–issue independents. After the next election, there will be deals to be done. The key question for Lucinda and Renua will be whether and how they will negotiate and compromise their ideals for a share of power. It is often said that politicians would trade a lifetime in opposition for a brief moment in power. It will be interesting to see if Renua have the stomach for the fight ahead. In the meantime we should all welcome and encourage a new voice and listen for the difference they hope to bring.

Heroin and Over €2 million allocated cocaine seized to Cork harbours in Cork Cork gardaí this week announced the seizure of heroin and cocaine with estimated street values of €37,000 and €1,000, respectively. The seizure was made following the search of a car at the M8 Toll Plaza, Watergrasshill. The driver of the car — a
male in his 30s — was arrested at the scene and brought to Mayfield Garda Station for detention. In a follow–up search of a house in Navan, County Meath, a small amount of ecstasy, cash and mobile phones were also seized.
CIT announces new scholarship Cork Institute of Technology has announced the new CITJanssen Scholarship, which is worth €2,250 per annum over the course of four years’ study. The scholarship is open to CAO applicants to the Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering at CIT.
Applicants will be assessed during April and May, and final awarding of the scholarship will depend on both the interview performance and Leaving Cert results. The closing date for applications is this Saturday, March 21st, and all information is available on cit.ie/mecheng.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine Simon Coveney this week announced the details of a €17.8 million capital investment package set to benefit harbours in Cork. €1.996 million is to be allocated to the completion of infrastructural improvement and storm damage repair work at Duffy’s Pier at Cape Clear’s North Harbour. A further €890,000 will be received by the Castletownbere Fishery Harbour Centre, to be spent on electrical upgrading and other safety and maintenance work. Announcing the investment package, Minister Coveney said: “This is a significant level of investment in Ireland’s publicly owned fisheries and local harbour network. “It will benefit a broad cohort of stakeholders including the fishing industry, seafood processing sector, marine tourism, and the wider rural coastal commu-
Simon Coveney, locals and representatives at North Harbour, Cape Clear
nities.” Cork South West Fine Gael TD Noel Harrington has welcomed the announcement of the funding for Castletownbere and Cape Clear. “These harbours are critically important to local communities and economies, particularly in peripheral and rural areas,” Deputy Harrington told The Cork News.
“These harbours are critically important to local communities and economies.”
“A recent Bord Iascaigh Mhara report found that 85 percent of the Castletownbere economy is dependent on the fishing industry.” The €890,000 allocated to Casteltowbere Fishery Harbour Centre will draw new business to the area, supporting diversification of the harbour’s business and helping to attract larger vessels.

Changes made to parking policy in Douglas to permit motorists 30 minutes of free on–street parking in the village do “not go far enough”, says Sean O’Riordan, PRO of Douglas Business Association. “The contention of business people not based in the shopping centres is that on–street parking should be the same as the shopping centres — three hours free parking,” he said. “Both the businesses in and outside the shopping centres are rate payers, and there really should be some sort of a level paying field. “It’s about equality. If there were three hours free parking, then shoppers would use it in the village.” Local businesses have been “hit badly” by the parking situation in the village, Mr O’Riordan told The Cork News, outlining that shoppers with “a choice” are going to places like Mahon, Carrigaline and Ballincollig. “If you are sitting in a car, the extra few miles don’t matter. People think ‘where can I park with the least amount of fuss’ and it’s a lot easier and faster not to travel to Douglas. Number one, you are looking for a parking space; number two, tickets;
Sean O’Riordan
and number three, change. You have a lot easier options available to you. “In some cases, businesses in the village have had their income affected by to 40%.” Mr O’Riordan said the announcement this week about the 30 minutes free parking has “acknowledged there should have been some element of free parking from the start” in Douglas and called for a campaign to promote the free parking, and the possibility of more “lax” parking regulations on Saturdays. Cork County Councillor for the BallincolligCarrigaline Municipal
District, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire stated there’s been a “push” for “quite some time to get some relief ” as regards to pay parking for Douglas. Along with the 30–minute free parking period, on– street parking restrictions have been rolled back from 6.30pm to 6pm. “I think it’s a relief for traders and the community alike in Douglas, it gives latitude for people to stop off and purchase an item without worrying about a fine.” A spokesperson for Cork County Council said the commencement date for the new arrangements is likely to be in April.

Cork research institute announces ‘unique’ research partnership A new partnership has been announced between Cork’s Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) Microbiome Institute and medical and pharmaceutical giants Johnson & Johnson. It is hoped the partnership between APC and Janssen Biotech Inc — one of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies in the Johnson & Johnson
group — will reveal potential uses of viruses as therapeutics to treat inflammatory bowel disease, which affects more than 20,000 people in Ireland alone. The project will be led at the APC Microbiome Institute — based at UCC and Teagasc, Moorepark — by APC director Professor Fergue Shanahan and project leader Colin Hill.
“While most people are familiar with human viruses, it is not as well known that bacteria also have viruses that can drastically influence bacterial populations. “These bacterial viruses are necessary for a balanced ecosystem, which is vital for the overall health of the host,” said Mr Hill. The partnership was an-
Local community groups to benefit from €400,000 research fund Cork-based research projects are to benefit from a €400,000 fund, the Irish Research Council (IRC) announced this week. Aimed at engaging community and voluntary organisations in academic research, the funds are being made available under the terms of a new partnership between IRC and The Wheel. In total, 41 research projects are to receive €395,261 to support collaborative projects between community and voluntary groups and researchers across the country — including academics from UCC. Cork group the St Nicholas Trust, which supports the families of prisoners, has begun work on a project examining the rights of children to contact and visitation when a parent is in prison, in association with UCC. Other Cork groups set to benefit from the funding include the Carers Association Cork, and Respond! Housing Association.

“The research findings from these projects will inform national policymaking.” Welcoming the partnerships’s launch, IRC director Dr Eucharia Meehan said: “The partnership between the Irish Research Council and The Wheel is a new departure for the research sector. “The research findings from these projects will not only benefit grassroots communities and inspire the work of researchers, but will also inform national policymaking for civic society.” Established in 2012, the IRC’s mission is to support a vibrant research community which will enrich Irish society.

Dr Magoo
20 March 2015
H
“I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: Macroom people are just Kerry people with shoes.”
ello old stock. I hear Cork City has a great chance of winning the League of Ireland this year and I’d hate to miss out on the bandwagon. I’ve never been to Turners Cross because I have a lifelong fear of going within a mile of Ballyphehane. Do you think I’ll be ok?
Alex, Blackrock.
I
t depends what you mean by ok, Alex. You are not in any danger. The Haneys (don’t call them that) are a very friendly bunch, particularly if it looks like you are going to buy them a drink. Your biggest problem is that their accent is highly contagious. Mr Magoo sat near a group of Haneys once on the train and I couldn’t understand a word he said for a week. We’d hate that to happen when you pop up to Cork Con for a gin. The old dinosaurs up there will think you’ve been possessed by Haney aliens. They’ll vote you off the committee, old stock.
B
onjour. Myself and one of my eight mistresses are flying in to Cork for what I like to call le naughty weekend. We will spend much of this time in our hotel room, where I will be trying to seduce her in the manner of a smarmy eel. What would you recommend we do in between Ze Big Love?
Daniel “Monsieur Lover Man”, Paris.
I
Email your dilemmas in confidence to drmagoo@thecorknews.ie
recommend you rethink your plans. If that poor girl has any sense, she will try to do what I like to call Ze Runner. A popular pursuit among the locals is to stroll along the river in Fitzgerald’s Park and wonder where the people in Sunday’s Well get their money. I myself like to stroll around the Saturday foody market on the Coal Quay. Don’t worry about any smell from the river; it’s completely neutralised by the pong off the hippies selling their apple juice. Make sure you buy yourself a few bottles. You’ll need to keep up your energy levels, Dirty Dan.
H
ey. I’m from California. I just thought I’d say that. Myself and my friend are doing like this surfing thing, where we go to places and surf. Anyway, we are flying into Cork and will spend a few days with you guys, before going to like Kerry, because we hear they have amazing surf. What could two very good looking chilled out guys do in Cork this weekend?
Brent, San Diego.
M
r Magoo is gone cycling with his middle–aged men friends this weekend, so you could always call into my place around three on Saturday. Just one condition really, Brent: No talking. You sound like an awful gobshite. Also, could you please send on a photo of yourself and your friend? I got caught badly last year when I invited a supposedly gorgeous Italian guy around. He was like someone from the ugly end of Mitchelstown. And that’s one ugly end, Brent.
H
ello. I turned on the news the other day and heard that gay people want to get married. Why the Jesus would they want to do that?
Marie, Ballintemple, I’m 94 you know.
I
know what you mean Marie. Mr Magoo and myself were saying the same thing only the other day, when we finally started talking again after a two–month standoff. I can’t even remember now what started it. But it was great to take a break from making small talk with the old bore. Don’t get me wrong. I’m fond of Mr Magoo, but more in the way you’d be fond of an old chair. I have only one question for any gay couple out there who are thinking of tying the knot: Any chance of an invite? Seriously, all my boring old straight friends got married years ago. I’d love a day out. When else can you drink two bottles of prosecco before dinner without people jumping to conclusions? Christmas, I suppose.
W
hat’s the story, man? I’m being transferred from Dublin to Cork at work and would like to know where would be a good place to live in and around the city. I hear Macroom is nice.
Danno, Dublin, but not for long more.
W
here did you hear Macroom is nice? Was it on LetsWreckThisGuysLife. ie? I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: Macroom people are just Kerry people with shoes. Sorry if that offends any readers in Macroom. I can see you out there now, moving your finger under the words and mouthing along as go, shouting “did oo see what that hoor said about us now, Seaneen Mac an Asail?” Your best bet is to live in the city. I’m afraid I can’t recommend any areas you should avoid. Sorry about that, but my accountant said I can’t afford any more court cases with the Norries.

HOPE for Kolkata The Cork Life Centre is to hold a concert to help raise funds for the Hope Foundation (HOPE), a Cork-based charity that works with street and slum children in Kolkata. In October 2014, two students from the centre visited Kolkata to help paint children’s homes and crèches, and experience another culture: “Travel brings power and love into your life. The power

to explore a new culture was amazing. “I look forward to seeing Kolkata again soon,” said Cork Life Centre student Melissa O’Sullivan. The concert featuring local bands is to be held Saturday, March 21st in Blarney Street CBS. Tickets for the 7pm show are available from the Cork Life Centre and on the door, priced from €5 - €20.
Cork group against plain pack plan This month, Ireland became the second country to sign legislation banning branded cigarette packaging. Cork–based smokers’ support group Forest Éireann has suggested that the legislation could now come under legal attack. A lawyer has told The Cork News the smokers group’s stance may not be without merit. “Big tobacco could potentially claim their intellectual property rights are being infringed. They have a right to use their brand, and that right is being infringed,” said Noel Doherty of Cork’s FitzGerald Solicitors. The first country to introduce such legislation, Australia, was sued by tobacco firm Philip Morris International. The High Court of Australia countered that the government’s
duty to promote the common good superseded big tobacco’s right to use their brands and the firm is now suing under international treaties, claiming they are now at a disadvantage against smugglers. “It is a matter of introducing laws to reduce smuggling, rather than laws to help big tobacco compete with the black market,” Mr. Doherty told The Cork News. The financial clout of big tobacco and their ability to engage the Irish government in costly litigation is a “big worry,” he continued: “Philip Morris International, with a turnover of $80billion dollars, threatened litigation against Togo – one of the world’s poorest nations with a gross national product of $4billion – over tobacco legislation. Togo backed down.”

Bear backs lifeboat project Adventurer Bear Grylls is leading his support for a campaign to save a lifeboat that took part in rescues during the Fastnet yachting disaster. The TV star is backing the Sir Samuel Kelly Project — launched last year to restore Ireland’s most famous lifeboat and build a maritime museum to house it in Donaghadee, County Down — as his great grandfather Sir Walter Smiles was one of 130 passengers who died in the Princess Victoria tragedy of 1953. “I do so also out of respect for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the volunteer crew of the Sir Samuel

Three years later, it took part in rescues at the Fastnet Yachting Disaster, in August 1979.

Daytripper Actor and playwright Noelle Browne (49) was born in a mother and baby home in Cork in the 1960s and was adopted at eight weeks old. She tells the story of the search for her birth parents in Postscript, which runs at The Everyman from Monday, March 23rd to Wednesday, March 25th. “I’m an early riser, even after working late at night. I’m up at seven. I love that time of the morning; I don’t think I’ve ever hit the snooze button. It’s a great time to get work done: if you have lines to be learning or a bit of writing or have to catch up on emails, work just seems easier. My first thought is always ‘coffee,’ a cup of very strong coffee. I only allow myself one cup a day and I always look forward to it. It’s porridge made with soya milk for me every morning. I’m quite health conscious — you kind of have to be. Theatre is very physically demanding. I’ve been an actor for about thirty years. I was very young when I made the decision that was what I wanted to do. I met a school friend the other night in Ballydehob and she said I was one of the few people in school who always knew exactly what they wanted to do. I wasn’t thinking about fame and fortune. Theatre isn’t particularly fortune filled. It can be a tricky life, but it’s the best feeling in the world when you’re working. Writing was something I always wanted to do, and I knew I had to find my voice. I studied for an Open University course in English in 2012 and made a creative writing module part of the degree. I never thought I would write a play about adoption, about my life. I thought: ‘I’m not standing on stage talking about my life. No way.’ All of Postscript — my search for my birth family — is true, aside from one tiny bit of invention. Some people find it hard to believe that the story I tell on stage is absolutely true. Growing up in Cork, I never had any interest in finding my birth mother. I grew up with my mum and dad as far as I was concerned. I don’t have kids: if I did I probably would’ve gone searching sooner. You’d be wondering

who those kids are going to look like. Then, a colleague mentioned he knew someone who had just traced his birth parents. I went home, and I’ve no idea what triggered it, but I made that first call. I just wanted basic information and to see my file. The church, and the nuns
in mother and baby homes in particular, have all the files you need. There is no law in place to compel them to give up those files. It’s appalling. I rang a nun in Cork; I was ringing her for months and she wasn’t getting back to me. When she finally did, she said I wasn’t entitled to see my file. At that point I nearly gave up.
The fact that you can go into certain public buildings, and the person behind the desk knows your details and you don’t — there’s something wrong with that. I don’t regret my search, but it was very emotional. It really brought up some issues I wasn’t prepared for. Postscript began in 2013
“At McCarthy’s, we won’t make a Drama out of your crisis, when it comes to a claim.”
when I went into a room with my co-writer Michéle Forbes. Michéle kept telling me: ‘You have to write your story.’ I live in Terenure with my partner, and have an office in the Irish Theatre Institute in Dublin, where I do a lot of my work. Also, when you’re producing your own show, there’s a lot of admin work to
be done: you’ll be on social media trying to publicise the show. My workspace is chaotic, but I like to think I get things done. After a day’s work, I generally ‘switch off ’ by watching TV. I love soaps. The Lucy Beale storyline in Eastenders kind of just drove me mad, though. It went on a little bit too long. It went crazy, and then you went: ‘Oh, ok. They’ve got away with it.’ Initially I thought: ‘What in the name of God is going on?’ As a writer, it’s interesting to engage with storylines like that from the other side, as an audience member. The show opens on Monday, and I’ll be driving to Cork on Sunday. I’ll be staying with my mum – it’s a great chance to see her. When I get to Cork I get to hang out with my mum. On Monday when Postscript opens, I’ll be nervous. I’ll head into the Everyman for a rehearsal around three. I’ll stay there until curtains. I make sure to do a warm– up at 6 o’clock; I’ll do some yoga and do a voice warm–up. You’re full of excitement and adrenaline, but you’re also a bit scared. You just try to keep yourself as calm as possible. I’ve a lot of family coming. My cousins are coming on Wednesday evening. I’m delighted. An awful lot of friends are coming, too. I love that support. I was very nervous opening the show in Dublin, and I had cousins text me saying they were coming to see me. They knew it was going to be difficult, and they wanted to support me. I’ll never forget that. I knew they were on my side, and even if everyone else hated it, they’d say something nice. You’re really buzzing after you’ve performed your own work. You’re high as a kite, really. Generally, I’ll have a glass of wine – a nice Spanish Rioja. You’re exhausted after a show so that’s enough.”

The business of breakfast Batteries, bandwidth and ‘the internet of things’ will all be discussed at an upcoming Cork Chamber business breakfast, as Dr Kieran Drain (pictured), CEO of the Tyndall National Institute, takes centre stage. Alongside improved battery life and the enhanced integration of the Internet into our everyday lives, Dr Drain will also discuss how new methods of milk testing are boosting Cork’s burgeoning agri–
food sector. Dr Drain will highlight these and other projects, all of which are taking place here in Cork under the auspices of the
Tyndall. The institute is one of the world’s leading research and innovation facilities and employs nearly 500 researchers, scientists and engineers from 38 different countries, improving technology solutions for health, communications, energy, agriculture, food and the environment. The business breakfast will take place on March 31st at Cork’s Clarion Hotel at 7.30am, and tickets can be booked at corkchamber.ie.

Can the pill cure blindness? UCC students will ask whether the contraceptive pill can cure blindness and whether lasers are the answer to super–fast broadband at a free event in the college on Wednesday, March 25th. The UCC Science for All competition encourages young scientists to communicate their research with the general public in an understandable, jargon–free manner. Five students will now exhibit their work at
the 7pm event in Boole 2, UCC. The competing students, and their chosen topics, are Kathleen Fitzgerald: “Life in 3D is never flat”; Usna Keating: ”Where are the birds and how are they affected by forests?”; Ian O’Neill: ”Crohn’s disease: When good bacteria go bad”; Prasanna Ramaswamy: “Want faster internet? You need a laser at home”; and Alice Wyse Jackson: “Three blind mice take the contraceptive pill”.

Public urged to keep up water pressure
Get started, Cork businesses told Members of Cork’s startup business community have been called to submit proposals to be included in the Startup Gathering, a week–long event promoting Ireland’s startup sector. Due to be held in five cities — including Cork — from Monday, October 5th to Saturday, October 10th, the programme will include over 50 events. Led by non–profit Startup Ireland partnered with Bank of Ireland, the gathering aims
to promote entrepreneurship and Irish startups to more than 15,000 people. The Startup Gathering will start with the first national conference for Ireland’s startup sector, and will finish with a state dinner hosted by Minister Richard Bruton (above, pictured at the launch). Invitees will include senior decision makers from venture funding, corporate venturing and corporate–backed accelerators. It is hoped the inau-
gural event will stimulate Ireland’s startup sector. “In Ireland we have great startups — we just don’t have enough of them. Two thirds of all new jobs are created by startups in their first five years of existence. “That is why we are taking action, as part of our plan, to support more businesses to start-up, expand, and create those jobs that we need,” said Minister Bruton at the launch of the event.
Cork businesses and entrepreneurs wising to take part in the gathering can submit proposals on new initiatives or existing events, programme launch dates and accelerator recruitment dates for inclusion. Events are also scheduled for Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. Those interested in taking part in the event can apply at startupireland.ie/startupgathering.
Sinn Féin’s General Election candidate for Cork South Central Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has called on the people of Cork to support the National Right to Water Demonstration, taking place in Dublin this Saturday, March 21st. “A good turnout on Saturday is key to keeping the pressure on the government, and I would call on anyone who is opposed to these charges to attend in the demonstration in Dublin,” said Councillor Ó Laoghaire. “The Right2Water Campaign, of which Sinn Féin is a member, is key to overturning the charges,” he continued: “It is a flat regressive tax, which takes no account of ability to pay, and could push many struggling families into poverty.” “A citizen on Social Welfare pays the same rate as would a government minister, or the chief executive of a multinational company. That is totally wrong.” Claiming that public disaffection with Irish Water has put the government “on the back foot”, Cllr Ó Laoghaire
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire
“A citizen on Social Welfare pays the same rate as would a government minister.” concluded that “a good turnout on Saturday will show Fine Gael and the Labour Party that their concessions will not subdue this movement until water charges have been abolished.”

Cork to mark World Anti–Racism Day Cork city will mark World Anti-Racism Day with a rally and march tomorrow, Saturday March 21st. Organised by Cork Says No to Racism, a coalition of local working groups, the event commences at 2pm at Daunt Square. The occasion comes following the news of a racist assault on Cork resident Simon Njenga on St Patrick’s Day. Mr Njenga had finished an 11–hour pizza delivery shift when a man racially abused him and threatened to break his jaw, after Mr Njenga refused to drive him from Blackpool to the city centre. While an investigation into the incident is ongoing, it is hoped Saturday’s march will highlight the positives of diversity in the city: “As Cork is becoming a more diverse city and region, we see people from all over the world living and working here, making positive contributions to our lives. “Seeing this diversity shows us how all communities can work together to get to know and respect differences and

Cork postmaster criticises social welfare policy Department of Social Protection moves encouraging social welfare payments to be made to claimants’ bank accounts have been criticised by a Cork member of the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU). The department has begun issuing letters advising welfare recipients to receive payments directly to their bank account rather than by collection at their post office. Aghada postmaster and IPU executive Paddy O’Shea highlighted his concern for the future of the 1,099 An
“Between 500 and 600 offices would be in serious jeopardy.”
Post sub-post offices – outlets managed by independent self-employed retailers – typically found in rural areas. “By my estimation, between 500 and 600 of these offices would be in serious jeopardy,” he said, speaking to The Cork News. Mr O’Shea also stressed his
concern for potential knockon effects of the policy: “People who claim their social welfare payments in their local post office typically spend their money locally. “If rural Cork post offices were jeopardised, so too would shops, butchers, and other local outlets,” he said.
New signage for minor roads, estates Cork’s thousands of miles of minor roads are to change status with the announcement that motorists can set their own speed limit when driving on them, under new guidelines. There is to be a new rural speed limit sign — a white circle with black diagonal stripes — on narrow country roads instead of the typical 80km/h sign. This sign means that drivers must use their judgement when using the road in question but must not exceed 80km/h in any event. The new signage will discourage speeding with the elimination of “silly signs” which could encourage excessive speed. The Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits, published by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe, also outlined new urban “Slow Zones” of 30 km/h for housing estates. It is envisaged that such zones should be a self–enforcing, reduced–speed area with speed bumps, markings or
other traffic-calming treatments as required. “While a reduction in driving speed has a significant part to play with road safety, there is no guarantee of safety at any speed and the responsibility to exercise care must be taken by all road users at all times,” said Minister Dono-
hoe. “Speed is an important, but not the sole, contributor to the cause and consequences of road accidents, making it essential that we all play our role in missing the number of incidents and ultimately reducing the number of deaths on our roads” he added.

Carrigaline student set for Voice knockouts A Carrigaline Leaving Certificate student will be in the live knockouts of RTÉ’s The Voice of Ireland this weekend. Eighteen–year–old Shauna Nolan, who wowed the judges with a mash up of Beyoncé’s Love On Top and The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back during her blind audition, is taking part in a new element of the show, adopted on The Voice worldwide. There will be three live knockout shows running from Sunday, March 22nd to Sunday, April 5th at 6.30pm with three members from each team performing. However their fate lies with the coaches, as it will be up to Bressie, Kian Egan, Rachel Stevens and Una Foden who stays in the competition and who goes home. Only one act will go through to the quarter-finals from each team each week and two acts will exit the competition. For Team Una this week, Shauna will compete against Patrick Donoghue and Kathleen Mahon for a place in the quarter-finals.

Cork woman nears sainthood Pope Francis has put a Cork woman a step closer to becoming a saint. Founder of the Religious Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead who was born in 1787 has been declared Venerable by Pope Francis. Being declared Venerable is the second of four
steps in the Catholic Church’s Canonisation process. “Mary Aikenhead was a woman ahead of her time,” stated Sr Mary Christian, Congregational Leader of the Religious Sisters of Charity. “All around her she saw the plight of people who were
poor and suffering. Her great faith and trust in Divine Providence enabled her and the first Religious Sisters of Charity to provide education for poor children, establish medical facilities for those in need of healthcare and to visit the sick and poor in their homes.”

This is Max, a beautiful gentle giant aged six. Max has a fantastic nature and adores cuddles and affection. He absolutely loves just chilling out and lazing around the house. We are looking for a home with older children as he doesn’t realise how big and strong he is. We would love to home Max to a home familiar with rottweilers or used to big dogs. Help is always near In the green garden Dear Editor, Suicide is seldom out of the news and for the victim’s loved ones the grief and unfathomable sense of loss remain long after the obituary and mention in the local newspaper. Everyone has suicidal thoughts and people deal with these in different ways. I have read the anti–suicide literature and agree with all the reasons given as to why we shouldn’t opt for this “permanent solution to a temporary problem”. But for me one of the strongest antidotes to even the thought of suicide has been the astonishing data that has emerged from research into Near Death Experience (NDEs). Leaving aside the fierce and seemingly endless controversy over whether people actually see the “Other Side” during NDEs, or truly meet long dead loved ones, what I find deeply significant is that in cases worldwide
people who attempt suicide and are revived after being pronounced clinically dead, almost without exception say they are glad and overwhelmingly relieved that the attempt failed. What an eloquent thumbs– down to the option of ending one’s life prematurely when help and support can be sought, and given, from many quarters. I find the NDE research comforting and reassuring because it reinforces my belief that suicide is not the answer regardless of what the question, or problem, might be, and no matter how horrible life can sometimes appear. The murky and doom–laden clouds CAN be banished to let the light back in. Help is ALWAYS only a phone call, or a friend, away. Thanking you, John Fitzgerald

New thinking 20 March 2015
Looking good and feeling good are at the heart of what Damien and Irene Twohig do, but they work with one very important consideration: how can this benefit Cork?
D
amien Twohig is familiar face in Cork business circles as since 2007 he, along with his wife Irene, have run the enormously successful personal training studio Educogym. In fact, the Twohigs have one the best performing Edcuogym franchises in the world. However, in addition to being a successful businessman, Twohig also prides himself on being a Cork man, and this loyalty to his home county saw him taking on a new challenge in 2012, when he set up New Minds Academy, a fitness and beauty therapy training college based in Glanmire. I ask him why he took on this extra challenge when he and his wife already had an extremely successful business: “Truthfully, not to put a shine on it, I saw Dublin com-
panies coming to Cork, training Cork people and I thought ‘no, I want be a part of this. I want to keep things local, we are Cork people, employing Cork people and training Cork people,’” he says. Set over 7,000 square feet and employing eight members of staff, New Minds Academy is Ireland’s largest independent private ITEC College. The academy offers full– and part–time fitness courses such as Personal Training and Nutrition for Physical Activity as well as courses in beauty therapy. Each course is assessed continuously with exams, internal assessments and a final external examination by ITEC. The academy expects an attendance rate of 90% from each student and compliance with this is taken continued on page 44

continued from page 43 into consideration for the student’s final course results. “Basically you could be a brick layer or a gardener and have a big interest in the gym and want to make a change to a career in the fitness industry. If you do one of our courses we give you an internationally recognised accreditation that you can travel the world with,” explains Twohig: “The same goes for someone who completes one of our beauty courses, they can open up their own business in Ireland or they can travel the world with proper accreditation.” ITEC (Irish Training and Education Centre) is the largest provider of distance– learning education in Ireland, a factor not lost on Twohig when setting up New Minds Academy. “We basically went with ITEC because it has the best certification,” he says. And while Damien admits that he and his wife never doubt any of the business decisions they make, there was a fear that people wouldn’t change allegiances from the already established colleges providing similar courses in Cork. This doubt proved unfounded however, as the business took off from the get go. “We filled our first course straight away, and have filled every space since; in fact this year we’ve doubled the courses that are available in the academy. If you’re filling courses in May and filling them again in November the
New Minds Academy is set close to the countryside in Glanmire
logical step is to put on more courses,” he highlights. With this increased interest in New Minds, has this Cork business waved goodbye to the recession? “In our other business we had a few tough years like everyone else, but I think we’re starting to come out the other end of the downturn; people are slowly beginning to spend money again,” he tells me. To that end he had another lightbulb moment when his wife complained that she
could never get an appointment to get her nails done, as all the local salons were always busy: why not try to combine one aspect of business with another? Twohig is passionate that the graduates of the Beauty Academy not only get the accreditation that ITEC provides, but that they also have the tools to secure employment in the beauty field or set up their own business after graduation. However, to gain employment in established salons you need to

have gained some amount of work experience. Therefore, the next four to eight weeks sees the Twohigs tie down a deal which sees them secure a state–of–the–art beauty salon premises in the city centre, providing services such as eyebrow waxing, eyelash tinting, and nail and make– up services. It also equips the students with the vital work experience they need to gain employment in the beauty industry after graduation. “Although ultimately it will
be another business for us it will also allow us to automatically provide our students with work experience. We genuinely, genuinely want the people who come through the college to get a job: we don’t want to just take people’s money. If we can provide them with the work experience that they need to get a job in the beauty industry then all the better,” he explains. This is quite a shrewd move on Twohig’s part as none of the other colleges currently running beauty therapy courses will be able to provide such unique ‘in house’ training. Twohig jokes that although the businesses he owns aren’t on the same scale as, say, Apple Computers, he concedes that there “is a bit of minding” in employing twenty two people between Educogym and New Minds Academy, and he while he is focussing on one new venture at a time he hasn’t ruled out expanding the academy further than the environs of the Rebel County. “We are going to see this year through with the new salon premises in the city centre and then maybe look at Limerick or Galway as possible locations for another college.” In the meantime Twohig is focusing his energies on Glanmire, a place he’s never too far from. “The premises are about a minute from my house, I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing!” he laughs. Make a Masala
O
ne of the most popular dishes in the world, you don’t have to take a trip to your local Indian takeaway for a delicious, creamy, mild chicken tikka masala. It’s often noted that this dish — called “England’s national meal” — probably originated in the UK, but it’s based on a long tradition of Punjabi tastes and techniques. The yogurt helps tenderize the chicken; the garlic, ginger, and spices in the marinade infuse it with lots of subcontinental flavor.
Ingredients Serves: 6 • 6 garlic cloves, finely grated • 4 teaspoons of finely grated peeled ginger • 4 teaspoons of ground turmeric • 2 teaspoons garam masala • 2 teaspoons ground coriander • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 1/2 cups wholemilk yogurt (not Greek style!) • 1 tablespoon sea salt • 2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts, halved lengthwise • 3 tablespoons clarified but-
ter or vegetable oil • 1 small onion, thinly sliced • 1/4 cup tomato paste • 6 cardamom pods, crushed • 2 dried chiles or 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes • 1 large tin of whole peeled tomatoes • 2 cups double cream • 3/4 cup chopped fresh coriander plus sprigs for garnish • Steamed basmati rice (for serving) Preparation • Combine the garlic, ginger, turmeric, garam masala, coriander, and cumin in a small
bowl. Whisk yogurt, salt, and half the spice mixture in a medium bowl; add chicken and coat it well. Cover and chill for five or six hours. Cover and chill the remaining spice mixture too. • Heat the clarified butter in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Add the onion, tomato paste, cardamom, and chilis and cook, stirring often, until the paste has darkened and onion is soft, which ought to take about five minutes. Add the remaining half of the spice mixture and cook, stirring often, until the bottom of the pot begins to brown
— four minutes or so ought to do this. • Add the tomatoes with all their juice, crushing them with your hands as you add them. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, stirring often and scraping up browned bits from bottom of pot, for eight to ten minutes until the sauce thickens. • Add the cream and chopped coriander. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens, after 30 to 40 minutes. • Meanwhile, preheat your grill. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and set a wire
rack inside it. Arrange the chicken on rack in a single layer and grill until it starts to blacken in spots (it will not be cooked through). • Cut chicken into bite–size pieces and add them to the sauce and simmer, stirring occasionally, until it’s cooked through: 8–10 minutes. • Serve with rice and sprigs of coriander, and some naan bread, poppadoms and mint yoghurt to really complete the experience! • You don’t need to deep fry the poppadoms either; they’ll cook quite well in the microwave.

Coffee nobility One of Cork’s best–loved coffee houses has raised the bar at the Bewley’s Barista Jam in Dublin, winning two awards — including Best Coffee Outlet — outright and taking second place in the coveted ‘cupping’ category. The Barista Jam sees an invited short–list of 30 baristas from around Ireland showcase their abilities across two days of competition and testing, highlighting their skills in everything from grinding to extracting to milk texturing and coffee–based knowledge. In addition to the Best Coffee Outlet award (you can see the award itself on the counter at Dukes on Carey’s Lane), Dukes barista Moyses Wietholter was judged to serve the country’s best cappucino. Speaking to The Cork News, Aidan Duke praised the entire team and highlighted what sets Dukes apart: even with some of the best baristas in Ireland, it’s vital to remember that the customer is at the heart of everything. “A lot of shops coffee for the barista, I sell coffee to quench the thirst of people who want coffee!” he told us.

DESIGN & BUILD
What you need to know about soil and compost Did you know 2015 has been declared International Year of Soils by the UN General Assembly? Soil is the beating heart of your garden — it will determine what thrives and what withers, so understanding when to augment it is key to a successful crop. Soil has a number of constituents, and the most dominant one determines the class of soil
you have. A lot of sand is a sandy soil; lots of clay is a clay soil; and soil with a lot of organic material is an organic soil; or peat, and so on. If it has a great balance of a number of important constituents, but no preponderance of any one of them, it is called a ‘loam’. Soil types vary throughout Ireland, but most are loamy in nature except around moun-
tainous areas. The way soil is formed depends on the ‘parent material’, which gets broken down over time, and then you must factor in climate, which impacts the way the soil weathers. Decayed vegetative and organic matter (humus) provides nutrients; organisms like slugs and worms break down the soil and oxygenate it, and moisture
also has a large role: when water passes through the soil it moves minerals, called ‘leaching’. A healthy garden starts with healthy soil, and you can add compost depending on your soil characteristics and what you’re growing. Compost is concentrated organic material, and provides a fertile bed for whatever you’re growing. Add some before each planting season.
ing. They’re best made with rough wood off–cuts or decorative bricks. Reclaimed railway sleepers or treated woods used for decking and fencing are not recommended as many contain chemicals which leach into soil and veg, and in turn, you. Lining the bed with black plastic film will prevent the enclosed soil drying out, and aim
for about one and a half feet of soil. All you need to do is mix your regular garden soil with general potting compost. Most vegetables prefer slightly alkaline soils, while potatoes and some fruit prefer acidic soil. Root crops such as carrots and parsnip prefer lighter and deeper soil so they can develop long deep roots, while such as
cabbage and broccoli like rich soils, and you can modify the soil in a bed easily. Add garden lime to reduce acidity, add ammonium sulphate to make soil more acidic, and add farm yard manure to make soil lighter. Drainage must be good or roots get waterlogged – that’s why raised beds are great for growing veg.
Veg Out All gardeners speak of their home–grown veg like favoured children, but there really is nothing like the delicious sweetness of organic veg from your own plot. Using raised beds allows you an element of control over nature; you can ensure weeds don’t encroach, and working a raised bed is far less backbreak-

More evidence: stress ages you faster The phrase “stress is a killer” is no longer anecdotal, and chronic stress has been scientifically linked to everything from cancer to heart disease to depression and even psychosis. Now a new study has proven that high levels of stress over a long period will literally make your body age more quickly. Work carried out by researchers in Florida focussed on the Sahariya people, who were displaced from their homes in India between 1998 and 2002. By monitoring the effects on their cells, as well as stress levels indicated by enzymes in their saliva, it was shown that stress — and all
the nasty chemicals it releases into our bloodstreams — can chop away at the ends of your cells’ telomoeres, tiny threads which are vital for cells to reproduce. The shorter your telomeres get, the older the cells are and the more likely it is that their copies will be less than perfect. So the consensus is in: to retain your smooth skin, bright eyes, shiny teeth and firm muscles, the best thing you can do (apart from regular exercise and a healthy diet) is find some way to chill out as much as possible, as often as possible!

Thirty years of close scrutiny has shown that breastfeeding children for as long as possible is categorically linked to increased intelligence in adulthood, better performance in school, and eventually higher earning potential. 3,500 people were monitored from birth over a period of 30 years for a scientific study published in The Lancet, one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals, which also analysed data from a separate study involving 6,000 babies born in Brazil in 1982. The magic is in the milk itself, as well as the length of time mothers breastfeed: babies who are breastfed for more than 12 months show a variety of beneficial effects. The secret, says lead author Dr Bernardo Horta, is “the presence of long-chain saturated fatty acids…which are essential for brain development”, and he noted “the amount of milk consumed plays a role.”

Be a donor Organ Donor Awareness Week will be officially launched on Wednesday, March 25th, by the Mayor of County Cork, Alan Coleman. The week will highlight the vital role organ donors play in saving and rebuilding lives all over Ireland, whether providing sight to the blind, a chance to lead a full and productive life to sufferers of chronic illnesses by donating kidneys, a liver or a pancreas, or even saving lives outright with the gift of a heart or lungs.
John Hurley, from Ballyanihan near Mitchelstown, spoke to The Cork News about his own experience with organ donors. Four years ago he was struck with a virus that damaged his kidneys to the extent that he now requires home haemodyalisis as well as regular sessions with a nephrologist at CUH. He is on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. “Up to the time I got sick I suppose I would never have considered it myself or seen the reasons why I should have
53
been a donor,” he said, “but now, seeing for myself how it improves peoples lives or keeps them alive, I do believe it’s important that people become donors. At the same time I’m on the transplant list and people ask me every day do I pray for a kidney. I say ‘no’ because it’s someone else’s misfortune, but I know people whose parents or siblings have been donors and they’re delighted that they donated, because it’s a comfort for them to know that their lives weren’t wasted.” Organ Donor Awareness Week runs from March 28th to April 4th. To become a donor, freetext ‘donor’ to 50050 or visit ika.ie.

Homeopathy is ineffective, study shows A wide–ranging investigation of homeopathic treatments and the claims of homeopathic practitioners by Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council has added more weight to the scientific consensus that homeopathy is no more effective in treating any medical condition than a placebo. Homeopathy purports to work by utilising the ‘memory’ of water to medicalise increasingly insignificant amounts of a substance in solution. Homeopaths claim that the more dilute a substance is — when prepared using ‘proper techniques’ — the
more effective it can be at producing a beneficial effect in the body. Claims for homeopathy have included that it is effective against maladies as wide rang-
ing as arthritis, drug addiction, genetic conditions and even cancer and HIV. Some parents have also used homeopathic remedies as a substitute for vac-
cinations, which is potentially disastrous for children. The study highlights the beneficial placebo effect some homeopathic ‘remedies’ can have on patients who suffer from non–life–threatening chronic conditions but notes that once again, there is no scientific evidence that homeopathic ‘cures’ are in any way medically effective against any of nearly 70 conditions which were tested. Homeopath organisations around the world, including the Irish Society of Homeopaths, have criticised the study, claiming that its conclusions are false.

Super Slimming Weight Loss Tea Causes a Stir! Yes, it’s really true folks.... an ancient Chinese Lotus Leaf tea or Yo Chi Tea as it is known, is becoming a global sensation! You see, this is simply no ordinary tea; far from it in fact, this is an amazing revolutionary tea blend which, because of its ancient Chinese herbal properties, is helping people everywhere to shed excess weight quickly, naturally and safely, simply by drinking two cups of it every day. Weight loss and detox could not be any easier than this, ever! Already, everyone wants to get their hands on this natural miracle worker and let’s face it why wouldn’t they? Already, J-Lo is singing its praises (sorry, we couldn’t resist that little pun!), blissfully sipping it till her heart’s content as she marvels at its benefits in terms of weight loss. Oprah too is a firm believer
in it so if it is good enough for two of the world’s biggest showbiz celebs, we are pretty sure it is more than just a little bit good! The good news? Yo Chi is available in Ireland, exclusive to Therapie Clinic. Clinics have reported waiting list around the country as Therapie have been struggling to meet the demand for tea both in store and online with many customers eager to aid new year weight loss using a more holistic approach. Commenting on its arrival at Therapie Clinic, Manager Jennifer O’Donovan said: “The response to Yo Chi Tea so far has been fantastic, it’s flying off the shelves! The great thing about Yo Chi Tea is it’s 100% natural, and has been proven to be effective in aiding weight loss and detox in a easy, safe way”
The blend contains Lotus Leaf, Oolong green tea and number of other ancient Chinese herbs, all of which have been specially selected because of their proven natural ability to purify and cleanse the body, and to essentially act as a nuisance in stopping the body from storing up food as excess weight, and burn excess fat which is stored in the body! Drinking just two cups of lotus leaf Yo Chi weight loss tea a day over a 14 day period will help to increase weight loss by up to 50%! Yo Chi Tea is exclusively available from Therapie Clinic nationwide, including 17B Opera Lane in Cork. Simply call them direct on 021 427 8736, to find out more or to order. For more information on Yo Chi tea and the 14 day detox you can visit www.yochitea.com.

Take a big bite out of the Big Apple
N
ew York, New York: so good they named it twice. The Big Apple is the original city that never sleeps, full to the brim with 24/7 energy and activity that makes it one of the most exciting destinations in the world. It has everything: shops, sports, sightseeing, bars, restaurants, great accommodation, food and drink from cultures all over the world blended together into something exciting and unique, Broadway, Central Park, and a thou-
sand movie–scene memories. What’s more, the long, long association between New York and the Irish will see you welcomed nearly everywhere you go. Nowadays everyone going to New York makes a beeline for Abercrombie & Finch on the world famous 5th Avenue, and rightly so as there is no shop like it anywhere. But don’t forget the old reliables: Macy’s, Bloomingdales and, Century 21, famous for its bargains. When you go to Macy’s and Bloomingdales be sure to sign up as a regular
and they will even give you a discount. Fans of sports will have a field day in New York too, whether seeing the Yankees, Giants, Mets or Knicks or just going to Madison Square Garden. If you can’t get tickets direct from the stadium try viagogo.ie. Food fans have to try Smith & Wollensky on 49th and 3rd. You can book ahead online but if you just turn up they will almost always find a way to look after you. The atmosphere is pure New York with a strong Irish flavour. If you are going for a special oc-

Mini but mighty The Mini’s rebirth has spawned a slew of variants, says Seán Creedon, but they all have good looks in common — perhaps at the price of a little practicality...
L
ast year Mini broke with tradition and introduced a five–door hatch; in theory the boot is a door, but still four doors is a big change for Mini, which was traditionally a two–door car. I got to test–drive this five–door model last week. BMW rescued the Mini range 21 years ago and has
done some exciting things with the brand by introducing many new variants along the way. Now for an extra €710 you can get two extra doors. That’s reasonable, but as you will see later the extras can really push the price up. I drove a black model with a white roof and two white lines on the bonnet: it certainly looked very attractive.
And for the first time ever the alloys were also white. Hard to keep them clean in rainy Ireland, but eye– catching all the same. Inside the first thing that struck me was that the big speedometer has changed. It still dominates the dash, but it doesn’t tell you speed you are travelling at any more; it now carries a range of information, like the list of radio
THE CLOCK IS
TICKING...
stations, which I appreciated. There are still plenty of toggle switches on the dash which always gives me the impression that you are piloting an aircraft. The real speedometer is now tucked away behind the steering wheel. You certainly need to keep your eye on it, as the 2.0–litre engine has plenty of power and you can get from zero to 100km/h in just over seven seconds. After a week in the passenger seat, my daughter said she wasn’t overly impressed; she reckons that practicality is sometimes more important than style where cars are involved. I found that the car was fine for city driving and you do get that go–kart feeling,
CHECK OUT 3 GREAT OFFERS
but it’s not really comfortable on a long journey. You are seated very low and if you have to drive over bad roads, you will feel every bump. There is room for two people in the back, three at a squeeze, but thanks to the extra doors neither the driver or front seat passenger has to get out to let the back seat passengers in or out. There is decent space in the boot, but no spare wheel: all BMW cars have run–flat tyres, though they will cost you €232 extra. The Mini is a gorgeous car and if you take good care of it, you are guaranteed good re–sale value. Prices for the five door start at €22,210 for the Mini One. Then the prices gradu-

ally increase as you move up the range to Mini One D, Cooper D, Cooper S, and the 2.0-litre top–of–the–range Cooper SD, which I drove, will cost you €29,104. After that there are still plenty of extras available, but how many extras you go for may depend on your own financial situation. If you want to opt for a PCP offer you can get a new Mini for €299 per month. I enjoyed my time in the five–door Mini and it brought back memories of carefree days of youth, but in truth I’m probably too old for a Mini at this stage of my life. Keary’s Eastgate Business Park is the place to check out the Mini range in Cork.

Achtung, oh baby! Mercedes–Benz has expanded to five the choice of models in their compact car segment with the introduction of their staggeringly gorgeous new five-door CLA Shooting Brake, the first versions of which will arrive in Cork within a matter of weeks. The Shooting Brake will be priced to attract those who may not have considered estate cars before, with launch models expected to begin from €31,490. Styled as a coupé — but with all of the functional attributes one looks for in an estate car — its visual appeal echoes that of the larger CLS Shooting Brake. Viewed from the front, its long domed bonnet and diamond radiator grille, with large inset star, combine to give it a sporty,
crouching posture. From the side, its sleek frameless windows, sweeping body and sloping roofline direct the eye to the rear and its robust bumper with twin exhausts, wide–opening tailgate and stylish light clusters. This is a very, very good– looking car; not something we often say about estates here on Drive!
The newest Merc will come in two CDI diesel models (both at just €190 annual road tax) and three petrol models (€270 annual road tax), all with ECO start/stop. Mercedes fans in Cork should get their names down for the latest example of German loveliness at MSL Cork in Little Island.

’m glad the guys at Dan Seaman Motors at Forge Hill know their stuff, because today I’m supposed to be driving a 2011 Insignia 2.0 CDTI SRi-5 DR and I am utterly confused by the impenetrable matrix of Insignia variants in existence. I fall back on “what colour is it”? Champagne, I’m told. Now there’s something I can work with. Women are capable of distinguishing fifty shades of beige. Don’t ask a man the difference between ecru and taupe. The car in question is immaculate; clearly the old car sales chestnut about ‘one careful previous owner’ is actually true in this case, and as I set my daughter’s seat into the handy Isofix points I notice she has chocolatey hands. The sales guy, a consummate professional, says nothing but I give her a good scrub with
“Would you go to court without your solicitor
or to the revenue without your accountant? Then don’t deal with an insurer without having McCarthy’s expertise, by your side.”
babywipes before hopping in, as it would be a sin to sully the pale upholstery. It is gleaming, and looks fantastic. Jeremy Clarkson and his Top Gear crew also love the Insignia, but seeing as he’s persona non grata at the moment I’ll just tell you what I think, as I have not alienated entire countries. Yet. By the way if the Vauxhall/ Opel question confuses you; Vauxhall is simply the brand name in the UK; they make the same cars and are both owned by GM. The Insignia is a big seller in the fleet market, and this 2.0 diesel is the most popular option as it provides the ideal combination of performance and economy. Oodles of sales reps who put in high mileage can’t be wrong, and the engine is quieter than expected, handling tightly over twisty tarmac. It’s good and solid on the
dual carriageway, with a smooth delivery of power from the SRi; the ‘S’ stands for sports and the ‘I’ for injection but nobody seems to agree on the middle initial. Doesn’t matter; it’s a great drive and this model is filled with everything you need for a safe, comfortable journey whether you’re loading in your family and all their gear or out prospecting clients. The boot is roomy; everything is adjustable; the multifunction steering wheel and lumbar support make for a relaxed, stress–free tootle around Cork. It’s a steal at only €17,950 as there’s a mere 35,179 miles on the clock, and the team at Dan Seaman Motors are always pleasure to deal with; friendly and knowledgeable. I think they were secretly pleased about the babywipes though. Visit danseamanmotors.ie or call 021 4320266.

The Lion launches The French brand with the famous Lion logo has made a good start to the year by launching a new version of the 508 and, for the first time in Ireland, their new 108 city car. The revamped 508 comes with a few new touches and enhancements and compares well in terms of price and spec with its main rivals, the VW Passat and Ford Mondeo. The 508 is a previous winner of the Irish Family Car of the Year and although the competition is formidable, this model
should help Peugeot grow their share of the Irish market. The new 508 has a more vertical look and comes with LED lighting and a new seven–inch colour display in the dash. Prices start at €27,750 (€270 per month PCP) and the 508 comes in three trim levels: Access, Active and Allure. It’s
available in 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines and there is also a Station Wagon version, which has a full–length sunroof. You get a five–year warranty, and road tax is only €190. The new 108 shares parts and looks with the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo, and although it’s coming late to the market it

City to take on Rovers
Zebo out! Cork’s own Simon Zebo is out of the starting line–up for Ireland’s final game of the RBS 6 Nations Championship against Scotland at Murrayfield tomorrow, Saturday (ko 2.30pm). Luke Fitzgerald replaces Zebo on the left wing and Cian Healy comes in for Jack McGrath at loose–head prop.
Captain Paul O’Connell continues his second–row partnership with Devin Toner with Healy’s inclusion the only change to the front five as both Mike Ross and Rory Best are retained. The back row is unchanged with No 8 Jamie Heaslip flanked by Peter O’Mahony and Sean O’Brien.
Ahead of the game, Cork prop Mike Ross, who plays for Leinster, stated the players are not getting ahead of themselves with Championship talk, as they focus on beating Vern Cotter’s side. “They are a very tough team to get away from. That has come through. They’re very good at disrupting the break-
down, and they have a big powerful back three. Stuart Hogg, especially, has quite a bit of gas about him and they have a very combative pack,” he said. “So, first and foremost we just need to focus on getting our game plan right, executing what we need to, and then just looking at what pans out from there.”
Cork City will be looking to repeat the success seen during their first home of the season as they make the trip to Tallaght this evening, Friday. John Caulfield’s side face Shamrock Rovers in the SSE Airtricity League in Tallaght Stadium (ko 8pm), coming a week after a resounding 5–0 win over Limerick at Turner’s Cross. Caulfield stated tonight’s game will be a tough test for his side: “They have done a lot of work in the close–season and there is a lot of talk about Rovers. They’ve won their
first two games and there is huge expectation there. It will be a huge challenge, Rovers will be favourites, but at the same time, we played them three times in the league last season, once when Pat was in charge, and we won all three. “For us it will be a good test, but I feel that, since preseason, the fitness levels are good and training has been very good and I think we are beginning to gel a bit better. Rovers have some really good players and they have lots of options. I think it will be a good quality game.”
Brunell eye final Cork’s Brunell could book their place in the Women’s Premier Basketball League Final for the first time with a win over DCU Mercy this Sunday. The Gurranabraher side came from behind to beat the Dubliners last weekend but have only a three point cushion going into the second leg of their play–off semi–final (3.30pm). Captain Danielle O’Leary stated she is hopeful of another
victory at DCU. “It doesn’t faze us going to Dublin for another game. It’s a huge opportunity,” she said. Brunell won the first leg 53–50, however, did trail by 12 points with 10 minutes to go. “We couldn’t steady the ship and got outscored 21-6 down the stretch,” said DCU Mercy’s Sarah McGrath. “Going into the game we’d have probably taken the three point defeat, but when you look at the
manner of the game it’s actually infuriating.” Team Montenotte Hotel also play in the second leg of the Women’s Premier League play–off semi-finals, taking on Courtyard Liffey Celtics in the Upper Glanmire Sports Centre tomorrow, Saturday at 5pm. In the Men’s National League Cup quarter–finals C&S Blue Demons take on BFG Neptune in Parochial Hall at 7pm.

World Champion Rob Heffernan
Cork’s world champion launches Great Island Run World champion athlete Rob Heffernan this week launched the Great Island Run, a ten–mile road race set to take place on Sunday, April 12th. Held in Cobh, the event
will raise money for the Irish Cancer Society, and for the first time will include a four–mile charity race and walk. Launching the event, Mr Heffernan — who won gold
in the 50 kilometre walk at the 2013 World Championships — said: “It’s fantastic to see a local running event go from strength to strength with runners from all over Ire-
land descending on the seaside town of Cobh for the sixth time this year. “It’s a great course, a great challenge and all for a great cause,” said the Corkman. Last year’s race raised over
€20,000 for the Irish Cancer Society, and was attended by fellow athletics legend, Cobh native Sonia O’Sullivan, who is also set to participate in this year’s event. Registration for the
10.30am race is now open, and those wishing to take part can register online at greatisland10.com. Registration fees are €20 for the ten-mile and €10 for the four-mile races.
for Cork runners Cork man prepares to run Call to raise awareness for ‘the toughest race on earth’ breast cancer A Douglas man and member of Togher Athletic Club is to run what the Discovery Channel called “the toughest footrace on earth.” The Marathon des Sables (MdS) is run in 50° Centigrade heat in the Sahara desert, and is the equivalent of five and half marathons – 251 kilometres – over six days. 24–year–old David O’Keefe (pictured), an accountant with six marathons behind him, will run the MdS in aid of the Marymount University Hospital & Hospice, hoping to raise €5,000. Running since the age of 12, the decision to enter the MdS was a personal one: “I just wanted to see how far I could push myself. I’ve
pushed myself in marathons, and I wanted to see how much further I could go. Although confident he’ll finish the race — “it’s just a matter of what my time will be,” he says — David is conscious that the race will provide new tests: “My feet are going to be in absolute tatters, my muscles will be aching and I’ll have constant headaches from the sun. “Mentally, I’ll break like a twig. I’ll have no family around, and I’ll have to wake up five mornings in a row and run a marathon in the desert,” he says. Having made the decision to enter the race just over a year ago, David has been in train-
ing for 13 months, gradually increasing the intensity of running sessions. “Last weekend I ran back– to–back marathons myself. I ran from Inchydoney to Clonakility for one of them – just doing laps.
“I needed to experience running on sand dunes,” he says. David’s training regime has included a number of solo marathons, and occasionally he has left his South Mall office after work, taking off an a three hour run. “The solo marathons are so much more difficult than organised events. “You’ve no crowd to push you on, and afterwards, there’s no real reward,” he says. David has a little over two more weeks of training before the MdS commences on Friday, April 3rd , and with fundraising efforts thus far raising €3,500, he is hoping to hit his €5,000 target shortly. To donate, see mycharity.ie/ event/davesdesertrun.
Skechers Ireland are calling on the people of Cork to take part in the inaugural Skechers 5k in Aid of the Marie Keating Foundation. The race takes place in the Phoenix Park on Sunday, March 29th. Registration for the 10.30am event is €15 for individuals and €30 for a family ticket, with entrants receiving a €15 Skechers voucher on registering. For more information on registration, see registration.precisiontiming.net.

All things being equal Eoghan MacNeill catches up with a busy Karl Fradgley, the Corkman behind Choral Con Fusion, 2015 Entertainers Of The Year and musical campaigners for a ‘Yes’ vote in May’s referendum
“
The idea came from a throwaway remark at rehearsals – ‘wouldn’t it be nice to release a single to mark the referendum?’ – and now here we are,” says Karl Fradgley of Cork choir Choral Con Fusion. The community choir, recently named “Entertainers of the Year” at the Dublin–based Gala Awards, is releasing a single today, Friday 20th, in aid of the ‘Yes’ campaign ahead of May’s marriage equality referendum. Established in 2010 by eight founding members, the choir is now 40 strong and has performed in venues across the country, including the National Concert Hall. We Love the Same, written by Karl and arranged by two fellow choir members, is a “simple pop song”, he says. Having debuted the single at an official launch last week, the choir is going from radio station to radio station promoting the song, which is already trending on Twitter at #WLTS. “I’m no activist,” says Karl, before explaining why he and
the choir’s other members have taken it upon themselves to promote a ‘Yes’ vote: “One of our straight sopranos spoke at our launch. For me, she really summed up why we’re taking on this campaign. “She said that she was born with the right to marry her partner, and that every week at rehearsals, she has to stand beside fellow sopranos who don’t have that right. “The choir members have found it quite emotional to be part of something so powerful.” Having never felt compelled to get involved in campaigning, Karl says he enjoyed a happy childhood and adolescence, supported by friends and family after coming out in the mid 1990s: “It was 1994, and homosexuality had just been decriminalised. I was a student at Coláiste an Phíarsaigh in Glanmire. I walked into class one day, and I knew the guys in the class had been talking about me. They told me if I ever had any issue with anyone to come to them, and they would sort it out. That was

huge, coming from a gang of 15 and 16 year olds.” While telling his mother was “tough,” she was “unbelievably supportive” of her teenage son: “She would come to Loafers — a gay bar in Douglas — occasionally and have a drink with me. She was able to experience my life and see it wasn’t any different to hers,” says Karl. On leaving school, Karl became a chef and although enjoying his work, felt he was neglecting the artistic side of his character. Returning to college to study interior design, he set up his own design house, contributing regularly to RTÉ before recession hit

the industry. With business slowing, dinner with a friend threw up the idea of opening a bridal shop, and Karl now owns two — one in Dublin and one in Cork. “We try to keep the shops very relaxed. Buying a dress can be stressful. “We’re chilled and honest, and it can be good to have a male perspective,” he says. Away from Wednesday rehearsals with the choir and the work he “enjoys immensely,” free time is spent following the Irish rugby team, the success of last weekend’s single launch tempered somewhat by the loss to Wales:
“It was a disappointing result, obviously, but I really think we can make the World Cup semi–finals. “Joe Schmidt reminds me of (English World Cup-winning coach) Clive Woodward. He’s very focused and singleminded. You just know he’s looking towards the World Cup,” says Karl optimistically. While the choir rehearses weekly, performances are intermittent, with Choral Con Fusion typically saving themselves for the grander occasion two or three times a year. They are set to play at Cork’s LGBT Awareness Week, starting Monday May 11th , and will then “see where the campaign takes them,” says Karl. “I mean, I hope that people like it, but I keep telling people it doesn’t matter if you like the song: it’s 99c, and it’s all about the cause,” he says. Looking ahead to May in the hope the choir can contribute to a ‘Yes’ vote on the 22nd, the fortuitous scheduling of Eurovision 2015 for May 23rd provides an opportunity for celebration: “This is an awful cliché, I know: I’m an interior designer and bridal shop owner, but I am a massive Eurovision fan. I was at it last year and my head nearly exploded. I can’t go this year because I need to vote. Fingers crossed the referendum passes, and we’ll have a great weekend,” he says. We Love the Same is available to download from iTunes and Google Play, and to stream on Deezer and Spotify. For more information, see facebook.com/choralconfusion.
