Public ‘not aware’ of extent of mortgage distress By Maureen Sullivan news@thecorknews.ie
P
rotestors gathered in front of Cork City Courthouse to show their support for the numerous home owners who appeared in court due to mortgage arrears this week. In a show of solidarity, members of the Irish Democratic Party (IDP), The Hub Ireland and the Anti Eviction Taskforce (AET) convened peacefully on Washington Street on a day when 93 house possession proceedings were scheduled and families faced the risk of losing their homes. Since the beginning of the year, more than 400 mortgage arrears cases have come
before the Circuit Court, which has exclusive jurisdiction for dealing with possession proceedings for residential mortgages, or an average of more than 66 cases every week. According to the Cork Court Office, seven houses were repossessed on Wednesday alone. “Who is supposed to house these people? Where are they supposed to go?” asked Ken Smollen of the IDP. “The IDP is showing its support to the people being hauled through the courts system and we are protesting against this inhumane process. People don’t realise what’s happening in the courts in their own towns. People passing by were stopping to ask what was going on: if there hadn’t been a
protest, they wouldn’t have known about this.” The Hub Ireland estimates that between 10 and 15 people per day visit their head office in Dublin looking for help from the voluntary organisation that offers help and support to distressed mortgage holders. “We are planning to open up a service in Cork in the next few weeks,” said Byron Jenkins, one of The Hub Ireland’s co–founders, who was at the Cork Courthouse. “The court is a scary place for people and they are often not in the right mental place to deal with it. We help people to communicate with the banks and guide them through the courts process.”

The engineers of tomorrow
Editor’s letter
I
t’s all go here at The Cork News, as ever, and the team has been working like a well–oiled machine to get this week’s issue ready to unleash upon the world. It’s always a source of pride for me to look around on a Thursday afternoon to see the concentration and diligence involved in getting a weekly newspaper prepared for publication and every department is a vital cog, meshing with the others to see yet another 80 pages safely to their destination. As we were putting this week’s edition together it occurred to me that, with a few exceptions, the thrum of activity in our offices and the gusto with which we approach each week is emphatically mirrored around the rest of Cork too. Festivals are being planned and expanded, cultural activities are blossoming, new events which will showcase Cork’s world– class tourism and maritime credentials are being finalised and there’s more besides: Cork’s car dealers are facing into what looks like being their best year since 2008, traders and businesses are already, by and large, seeing a bump in sales figures — at least, in comparison with recent Januaries and Februaries — and there is an undeniable sense of purpose, progress and optimism abroad on the streets of our great little city. The county too is facing 2015 head on, with the arts, tourism, infrastructure and culture all getting much–needed shots in the arm. There’s a movement afoot which seems to say “enough of the misery now, lads, we’ve got better things to be doing”, and though they’re still to the fore in many people’s minds, frustrating, ongoing issues like water charges, industrial disagreements and sundry thorns in the side are having less and less impact on public attitudes and discourse. That’s not to say that everything is yet golden in The Rebel County. Of course it’s not; as you’ll see from our front page, the number of Cork families facing eviction from their homes is still disquietingly high. Frankly, one is too many. Protests against Irish Water — or wider issues such as a ‘lack of democracy’ — are still happening, though with diminished energy and support. Cork Airport is still struggling to get a fair deal, and at times it still seems that for every ten steps we take, we stagger back one or two. But that drive, that desire to make tomorrow better than yesterday, is unmistakable and, as a good friend of mine said last weekend, the people of Cork seem to have had enough of complaining and are opting instead to do something about it. I don’t know whether that’s because of the advent of springtime (the first daffodils of the season are set to make their brilliant yellow debut any day now), the now–noticable stretch in the evenings and slight brightness of the mornings, or simply being “mad as hell and not going to take it anymore”, but it’s here, it’s real, and it seems to me to be gathering pace. Much like us at the offices of your favourite weekly newspaper, the men, women and even children of Cork are seizing the moment, sanding away the burrs and the splinters, putting the heads down and driving on, as you’ll see in this week’s pages. I hope that the same is true for you and yours!

Dispute over institute merger plans By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
Industrial action is being threatened at Cork Institute of Technology over concerns about the planned merger between the college and its Tralee counterpart. The Teachers Union of Ireland has informed CIT and Institute of Technology Tralee representatives that it has lodged a formal dispute with the Labour Relations Commission in relation to the proposed merger process, which would lead to the creation of Munster Technological University (MTU). Under the Technological Universities Bill, institutes of technology can apply for TU status once they
meet certain criteria. Cork and Tralee Institutes of Technology put forward proposals for a merger, which is being overseen by the Higher Education Authority (HEA). Last month, the two consortiums were asked to consider the reports of an expert panel before moving forward with their plans to merge. TUI assistant general secretary Aidan Kenny told The Cork News the union and branches are not opposed to TUs, and “would be supportive of both CIT and ITT becoming a TU in their own right”. However, he said the issue of concern is the “higher education authorities insistence that the institutes have to merge first”. He stated the TUI has lodged
a dispute with the LRC and if the merger is “forced through” before talks, it will ballot members for industrial action. Mr Kenny stated there are concerns relating to rationalisation, the €6.7m needed to merge the two ITs and also the lost of the “unique identities” of the colleges. “For over half a century now Cork, and later on Tralee, have been serving their regional communities both effectively and efficiently. If they are doing such a good job, and they are not broken, what are they trying to fix? Cork in particular nearly hits the criteria to become a TU in its own right, so why can’t it? We are saying ‘it looks like a university, it acts like a university, why are you forcing them to merge?’”
Mr Keney added that lecturers “want to keep the CIT brand”: “They have served the community well, served students well, they don’t see why they have to change,” he continued. A statement issued by MTU outlined that both CIT and ITT are “committed to the reform of the third level sector as advocated by national policy”. “The creation of technological universities, not just in Munster, but also elsewhere in Ireland, creates an unprecedented opportunity for the institutes involved,” it reads. “Both CIT and ITT are available to engage with the TUI on the on–going technological university process, as has been our practice since this project commenced.”
‘Families are coming out of the courts in absolute terror’ continued from page 1 “Families are coming out of the courts in absolute terror; they’re crying and they’re desperate,” Mr. Smollen said. “A lot of them come over to thank us for supporting them because they feel alone and don’t know where to turn. We are highlighting what is hidden in this country because people are not going to advertise that they are in difficulty. People do feel terrible shame. Pride is a natural thing that Irish people feel.” In the four years since its foundation, the Anti Eviction Taskforce has helped many
people to deal with their mortgage crisis and so far, they claim, they have prevented evictions in every case they’ve handled. Brian McCarthy, a volunteer from Kerry, said that the banks are governed by a code of conduct on mortgage arrears, but says they are “flouting” this: “The banks are supposed to explore every avenue possible before taking people to court, but they are totally and utterly uncooperative. Because of the distress involved, people are not able to answer the bank, not to mind come to court.” “Most people don’t turn up to the courts because of fear of the
unknown,” Mr Jenkins told The Cork News. He advised distressed mortgage holders not to bury their heads in the sand: “There are plenty of organisations out there that can help.” For those who find themselves in a housing crisis, Cork City Council co–ordinates the emergency needs of homeless individuals and families and Cork County Council also pays monthly for 28 homeless beds for three different voluntary bodies in the Cork area, on an ongoing basis. When contacted by The Cork News, a spokesman for Cork City Council said “under the Mortgage to Rent Scheme,
the mortgagee would have to voluntarily surrender ownership of their home to their lender. A Housing Association would then buy that property from the lender and become the mortgagee’s landlord. The mortgagee would no longer own their home but they would be able to continue to live in it as a tenant of the Housing Association. They would then pay an income–related rent set by the relevant local authority. Another option where a householder runs into difficulty with their mortgage is that they can apply to Cork City Council to go on the City Council’s Housing waiting list.”

DAA chairman calls for Bomb attack subsidy for Cork–Dublin route investigations ongoing “Reaction so By Maureen Sullivan
news@thecorknews.ie
far from the government has been negative. It hasn’t been hugely supportive of Cork airport.”
The flight route from Cork to Dublin could be reinstated if the government provided support in the form of a subsidy, according to Pádraig Ó Ríordáin, Chairman of the Dublin Airport Authority. Mr Ó Ríordáin brought his proposal in front of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications this week as part of a lengthy submission that included discussions on the future of Cork Airport, which is owned by the DAA. In the past, Ryanair serviced the Cork–Dublin route, but cancelled it in 2011 due in part to the improved motorway between the two cities. The subsidy requested by Mr Ó Ríordáin would take the form of a public service obligation contract that provides government funding in situations that would otherwise be commercially unviable. Michael McGrath, TD for Cork South Central, said “the government
is spending millions every year on PSOs to ensure flights from regional airports such as Kerry, Donegal and Knock. The Kerry–Dublin route receives €4 million per year in PSO funds, but Cork gets no subsidies whatsoever from the state. Having this route subsidised would be hugely beneficial to the economy of Cork.”
Deputy McGrath praised Mr Ó Ríordáin’s efforts at reigniting the debate, saying “it requires political support from the government to make this happen, but the reaction so far from the government has been negative. It hasn’t been hugely supportive of Cork airport.” In his address to the Oireachtas, Mr Ó Ríordáin said that, despite very dedicated efforts by DAA management in Cork and Dublin to reverse the trend,
traffic at Cork has continued to decline, despite airport charges at Cork not having increased in over 10 years and being highly competitive compared to peer airports in Britain and continental Europe. He concluded by saying that growth in DAA passenger numbers is generated in Dublin and masks the challenging situation in Cork, where traffic declined by 5% last year to 2.1 million passengers.
Gardaí at Gurranabraher say they have not yet identified any suspects or identified a motive for an apparent pipe– bomb attack in Knocknaheeny on Wednesday, February 11th. A suspicious device was found in the garden of a home in Killala Gardens, prompting gardaí to request assistance from the Army Bomb Disposal Unit. The device was declared safe before being moved to an army facility for testing and investigation. The incident forced the temporary closure of Kilmore Road and prompted the evacuation of residents in the area.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Youghal say no arrests have yet been made in connection with an investigation into a firebomb attack on a house in the Upper Strand area of the east Cork town. The house in question was occupied at the time of the attack — about 3.50am on Thursday, February 5th — but nobody was injured. To contact Gurranabraher Garda station, call 021 494 6200. Anyone with information on the attack in Youghal can call 024 92200. Alterntively, the Garda Confidential helpline is 1800 666 111. The investigations are ongoing.

Fifty shades of opinion By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
Thousands have pre–booked seats for Cork cinemas for screenings of Fifty Shades of Grey, however the film is sparking some controversy. Omniplex Cork in Mahon Point Shopping Centre hassold over 3,300 advance tickets for the much– anticipated movie based on the relationship between student Anastasia Steele and controlling billionaire Christian Grey, with the cinema putting on extra screenings of four showings at peak times starting every half hour from 8pm. A spokesman for Omniplex said: “We’ve not seen hype and anticipation for the likes of a film like this since Sex And The City was launched. “However, not everyone is happy. We’ve had some emails asking us not to show Fifty Shades of Grey, which are in a similar vein to those we received when we showed The Passion Of The Christ. Despite this, the overwhelming majority of people are not opposed to it. We’re expecting a very busy week and have had huge demand.”
“We’ve not seen hype and anticipation for the likes of a film like this since Sex And The City was launched.” Store manager of Ann Summers shop on Princes Street Catherine Cooney stated that once the Valentine’s Day rush drops, it’s hoped the Fifty Shades of Grey inspired shoppers will come through their doors. “We did see a massive uplift when the book was launched, and we should see a massive uplift with the film,” she said. “We are hoping to see the footfall come in from Sunday and all through next week.”
Funding boost for Cork festivals Two leading Cork festivals have received funding in a bid to boost tourism activity and drive visitor growth in the second half of the year. Guinness Cork Jazz Festival has received €30,000 and Cork Film Festival €20,000, as part of a total €320,000 allocation approved by Fáilte Ireland under its National Festivals and Events Programme for
11 key national festivals and events to take place later this year. This follows an announcement of almost €2m last November for larger events and those festivals due to take part in the first six months of this year. This year is the 60th anniversary of the Cork Film Festival, which will span 10 days with over 185 different events across the dates.

Keila Basi Lucio of Cork Feminista outlined the erotic romance novel by British author EL James “promotes an obsession of power, money, lust, control and psychological manipulation”. “While women are fantasising about the controlling and abusive Christian Grey of fiction,

Council to explore housing trusts The possibility of establishing a housing trust to tackle the property crisis is to be explored by Cork County Council. The motion, proposed by Sinn Féin councillor Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, called on the council to explore the possibility of an Arms Length Housing Trust, a company that would be able to borrow money from the Housing Finance Authority (HFA). The money would then be used to secure mortgages with which the council could build houses to be rented to those on the housing lists. The motion has been referred to the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. “Like numerous local authorities throughout Ireland, there has not been anywhere near the amount of social housing built in recent times,” said Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire. “This has helped contribute to a disastrous housing crisis, with nearly 4,000 people on the housing list in the Southern Division alone. People are becoming homeless, and some of these people are on local authority lists for many

years, and the private market is unable to support them. We must ensure a crisis such a this never happens again. “Much of the reason that there was not many houses built is down to a lack of finance, despite the fact that housing generates income through rent. There is money available from the Housing Finance Agency, and other sources, including the European Investment Bank. However, Cork County Council cannot access these funds, because council borrowing is link to governmental debt– to–GDP ratios. “If the council was to establish an Arms Length Housing Trust, under Cork County Council’s direction, this would not apply.”
Cork charity saving lives in war–torn Ukraine The Cork–based humanitarian aid agency Chernobyl Children International has flown a team of leading international surgeons to Eastern Ukraine to carry out urgently–needed operations on 60 children suffering from genetic heart defects. Funds to send the team to the region were raised following a Christmas week appeal, and more than €150,000 was raised during the next four weeks. “This was an extremely generous donation from the Irish people,” Brenda Murphy, Fundraising and Communications Manager with CCI, told The Cork News. “It costs about €1,000 to save one child’s life so this money will go a long way towards helping this mission.” Six thousand babies are born with heart defects in Ukraine each year and half of them are not operated on due to lack of facilities and of qualified medical teams in Ukraine. Without cardiac surgery the children, who need open–heart operations, have little hope of living

been displaced within Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. Adi Roche, Founder and Voluntary CEO of CCI, who also flew into Kharkiv, said the situation in the region is still extremely volatile, with daily battles being fought less than a than two hour drive to the

Cork businesses must work together to attract visitors
Baby Market returns to Cork The Rochestown Park Hotel will host “The Baby Market,” show this Sunday, February 15th, from 12:00pm to 2:30pm. The event is being touted as “a bargain hunter’s paradise” and the organisers say it will be bursting at the seams with second–hand infants’, children’s and maternity goods for sale, plus great entertainment for the kids. Top quality ‘pre– loved’ items will be available
for purchase by budget–conscious parents, and the first 40 people who bring a blanket, duvet or sleeping bag for donation will receive free entry into the show. Sellers can rent a stall to sell their own items for €25, or individual items can be dropped off and sold for a 25% commission. For full details, visit babymarket.ie. All the proceeds will go to Cork Simon Community.
Tourism businesses from the Ring of Cork gathered last week at The Jameson Experience in Midleton for an event that was a culmination of several local area meetings that recently took place throughout the region. The keynote speaker of the evening was Pól Ó Conghaile, the award– winning travel writer, editor, and author who captivated the audience with his insights into Irish tourism. He stressed the need for creativity, working together, providing good value and, above all, the importance of promoting local people and experience. “Tourism is an increasingly crowded and noisy space, and it’s harder than ever for businesses to cut through. To attract visitors, destinations need to pull together, to get creative and unified with their messages. That’s why it’s so encouraging to see Ring of Cork members pulling a new focus today. That they are meeting at the Jameson Experience, the heart of the world’s fastest growing whis-

embracing the challenges of worldwide competition will ensure a sustainable future for tourism in the region and create much-needed employment for future generations.” Ignacio Peregrina, General Manager of the Jameson Experience at the Old Midleton Distillery, said “we were delighted to host this regional
networking tourism event. There’s no doubt that the tourist industry has shown signs of strong economic recovery, with visitors numbers continuously increasing. It is very appropriate that tourist operators are meeting at the Jameson Experience, home to an iconic and world renowned Irish product.”

Hook uncorked "Waste not, want not" admonishes George Hook, wondering whether taking from the needy to give to the less needy is really the way forward... george@thecorknews.ie
A
rguably, one of the greatest sins is squandering scarce resources on those of sufficient means. My mother instilled in me an aversion to wastefulness from a very young age and while I consider myself a generous person, I am certainly not flippant. A dinner plate in the Hook household was always licked clean. Even if a few scraps remained from an evening meal, it was always recycled in stews or soups the following day. My parents battled to give me every chance at life and for that I am eternally grateful. Part of my resentment for wastefulness stems from a strenuous, stressful middle age that was spent chasing paycheques in order to survive. Even in my darkest hours, with creditors hunting me down at every turn, I still maintained a generous equilibrium among family and friends. Sometimes I shared money that I didn’t even have. Looking back on it now, I could be utterly stupid and obscene with my philanthropy, banishing the consequences of my careless actions to the back of my mind. But that was the way I was. I still insist that generosity is the most wonderful human trait, but it also has the potential for ruin. Sharing wealth among those who need it is an extraordinarily satisfying experience, but dividing out money among family and friends when the resources aren’t there in the first place is just kindness to a fault. Speaking of which… The government’s plan to push ahead with free GP care for every child under six falls into the above bracket, though labelling it as ‘kindness’ is flattering in the extreme. A blanket scheme to offer free medical care for all children, even those who

do not need it, is actually financial mismanagement at its worst and I am calling on doctors in Ireland not to sign up to it. Any way you examine it, the scheme is unfair and entirely unfit for purpose. What is the sense of handing out free doctor visits to a well–off family with one hand, while depriving others in dire need of financial assistance with the other? It makes absolutely no sense. The government is merely throwing good money where it isn’t needed.
I wonder how the justification for this scheme was even considered? What was the thought process that had to examine the way families and children are currently eligible for medical cards and then rationalise dishing out free GP visits to all and sundry regardless of circumstance? Brendan O’Connor’s heartbreaking newspaper column last Sunday was as difficult to fathom as it must have been for his family to endure. What kind of society could tolerate a situation where a little girl with Down’s Syndrome is

deemed well enough to have a chance at an independent life, but not sufficiently handicapped to benefit from state aid? Tell me, Minister Varadkar, did you not flinch and recoil in horror as you read Brendan’s article? Were you not embarrassed at the depressing reality of what passes for medical care in Ireland in 2015? Tell me you felt a knot in your stomach and the urge to do something about it. I can only assume that you did not read Brendan’s piece, Minister. Because if you did
and you still decided to come out and publicly support the proposed new GP scheme this week, I’d be forced to mark you down as heartless and uncaring, and I know that is not the case. The most recent survey of practising GPs in Ireland suggests that 90% will refuse to participate in the free care for under sixes. Most of that number deem the scheme to be immoral, unworkable and unfair. The unworkable side of the contract doesn’t particularly concern me. I accept that GPs
work long hours but they are also very well compensated for what they do. The small details, like the amount of paper work that will come with these proposals, can be resolved and whittled down after consultation from all sides. The extra administration work for doctors is not worth fretting about. The crux of this matter, and the reason why it sticks in my gut, boils down to the complete and utter unfairness of it all. Every day in my job I hear of medical cards being removed from terminally ill patients and people suffering from life–long medical conditions who cannot afford to pay for their treatment. I see elderly friends and colleagues who struggle to foot the bill for their basic medical needs and I wonder what kind of a country we are living in. How is it justifiable to continue to hammer those who are already struggling to get basic medical treatment while dishing out free money for every child under six in Ireland, regardless of their means? If the government wants to continue down this road of facilitating medical care for young children, surely it must proceed on a basis of “needs must”? And in so doing, make the process as easy and transparent as possible? Is that too much to ask? So what’s it to be, Minister? Will the government and the health department consider the madness of this proposal and relent? Or will it plough ahead with a scheme that is not needed, not fit for purpose and an insult to every struggling family that is refused a medical card because of unnecessary red tape and infuriating bureaucracy? Because, by proceeding with this proposed scheme, the government is trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist, while continuing to ignore those most in need. Where is the fairness in that?

Anti-Water leaders say ‘We Won’t Pay’ €30,000 donated to St Vincent de Paul For the third consecutive year, the Kilkenny Group has proudly presented a cheque for €30,000 to the St. Vincent De Paul (SVP) charity from its annual, nationwide Christmas Gift Wrap Appeal. Half of the funds were raised through customer donations in stores nationwide over the Christmas shopping period and matched by a lump sum donation of €15,000 by the Kilkenny Group. The funds raised will be distributed to
SVP districts across the country. Geoff Meagher, National President, Society of St. Vincent de Paul also extended “thanks to the Kilkenny Group and their customers for the very generous support for the work of SVP through the gift wrapping campaign. Donations such as this ensure that SVP can continue to provide practical support to those families and individuals who seek our assistance.”
Last week more than than 200 people attended a rally in the Metropole Hotel to launch We Won’t Pay, the non–payment of water charges campaign in the Cork region. The campaign encourages communities, streets and households across Cork city and county to boycott the water charges in advance of water bills being issued at the start of April. The campaign has dwindled in support since tens of thousands of people participated in a series of concerted protests across the country in the run up to Christmas. A combination of government concessions and bad press at a number of the protests — including incidents when the President and the Tánaiste were heckled and molested by protestors — have led to diminished popular support for the campaign. We Won’t Pay aims to bring a rejuvenated boycott mes-

Councillor Mick Wallace sage to communities, streets and households across Cork city and county in the runup to the first issue of water charges bills at the start of April. The recent arrest of Socialist TD Paul Murphy in what critics of the gov-
ernment have described as “political policing”, which folowed an incident involving Tánaiste Joan Burton, has stirred more support for anti–charge campaigns, but they have failed to regather their December momentum. Campaign organisers have planned a further protest on St. Patrick’s Bridge for Saturday, 14th February at 3:00pm. Councillor Mick Barry of The Socialist Party, a supporter of the We Won’t Pay Campaign, told The Cork News “there’s a need to stop political policing and the establishment needs to back off and stop the outrageous attempts to discredit the anti water charges movement. We think that the arrests this week were a major public relations blunder by the establishment and they’ll serve to strengthen, not weaken, the anti–water charges movement. Vegas wedding auction takes charity turn Make a By Nick Bramhill A Cork groom and his Bulgarian bride are auctioning off places at their wedding reception to help a family friend who suffered catastrophic injuries in a horse– riding accident. Patsy O’Connor, from Kanturk, had originally hoped to raise thousands of euros to cover the cost of his big day in Las Vegas next month by selling off six seats at the wedding reception to random strangers — the story featured in The Cork News on December 12th last year. But the 39–year–old north Cork man said he and his bride–to–be Radina Hadshieva had no hesitation in scaling down their lavish wedding plans in order to help out a hosptialised friend and his young family. Their pal, Alex Ott, a wellknown equestrian enthusiast and devoted father of four young children, suffered serious spinal injuries while exercising a horse near his home in Newmarket last November. The ‘Alex Ott Appeal’ was

Patsy — who runs a web development company in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia — has now pledged to do-
Patsy O’Connor and Radina Hadshieva nate 90% of each successful bid to the Alex Ott Appeal. Although Patsy admitted he will now end up effectively paying for the privilege of entertaining six complete strangers at his wedding on March 16th, he insisted that he and Radina are delighted the bulk of the funds raised
will be helping a friend in need. “Nothing has changed,” he said: “The plan is still to have six random strangers at the wedding. It was always more about the fun element anyway than raising money, because we thought it would be fascinating to have a table
full of six people who didn’t know each other nor anyone else at the wedding at all. “That’s still going ahead, only now we’ll be donating 90% of the money we raise to Alex and his young family, as they need the funds much more than we do.” Since launching the initiative last December, Patsy’s website gatecrashmywedding.com has been attracting between 4,000 and 5,000 hits per day, while worldwide media interest has even extended to Australia. Would–be bidders have just over two weeks left to make offers before the site is closed down ahead of the upcoming nuptials. Successful bidders have been promised the couple’s “matrimonial ceremony, a full sitdown meal, open bar, character–filled and fun–fuelled guest list, DJ, dancing and general all–round shenanigans”, with offers starting at €300 per head. For more information, see gatecrashmywedding.com and for details of fundraising events for Alex Ott, see ‘Alex Ott Appeal’ on Facebook.
musical in Cork Auditions are about to get underway for the musical Sweet Charity, which will be performed at the Firkin Crane in early June under the direction of Cork City Councillor Kieran McCarthy. The newly formed Cork Musical Society will hold open auditions to find the ideal cast on Saturday, February 21st and Saturday, February 28th between from 1pm to 4pm at the Firkin Crane on John Redmond Street, Cork. Sweet Charity tells the story of dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine, an eternal optimist who is forever unlucky in love as her trusting nature and naiveté attract a succession of opportunistic men. Those interested in auditioning should prepare a song of their choice and bring sheet music on the day, if possible. All applicants must be over 17 years of age. For further information on the auditions, find Cork City Musical Society on Facebook.

Scoil Eoin NS are the robochamps Scoil Eoin NS has won the first ever VEX IQ Robotics championship at the Nexus Centre, CIT, in a competition that involved seventeen Cork primary schools. VEX IQ is a robotics platform designed to teach primary school children the value of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning and drive an interest in technology. For the competition, primary school pupils used VEX technology to design and built robots like the one pictured, which they programmed and remote–controlled to complete tasks. IT multinational EMC, based in Cork, introduced the VEX IQ initiative into primary schools last year. In preparation for the competition, each school was assigned an EMC mentor to guide the students through all
the phases of building their robot. Martin O’Flaherty, Program Manager at EMC and VEX IQ Robotics leader, said he was thrilled that the first primary school competition had received such an enthusiastic reception. “VEX has proved a great way to engage pupils in STEM learning, and VEX IQ demonstrates its fun and practical uses to an even younger audience. As the global economy relies more on technological innovation, for Ireland to remain competitive, it’s important that schools value investment in these skills.” Scoil Eoin NS’s winning team of twenty sixth–class pupils and their teachers, Leo Lowney and David Coughlan, will compete at the VEX IQ World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky in April.

Human error blamed for Astrid sinking Passage planning appears to have been influenced by photo op Lifeguards are needed at Youghal, pictured, and elsewhere.
Do you know how to save a life? Cork County Council is looking for beach lifeguards for the upcoming summer season. The positions are at Garryvoe, Youghal (Front Strand, Claycastle and Redbarn), Owenahincha, Barleycove, Inchydoney, Rosscarbery (The Warren), Skibbereen (Tragumna), Garretstown and Garrylucas. Candidates
must be not less than 17 years of age on Monday, April 20th and will be required to undergo a practical test in resuscitation, swimming ability and swimming rescue together with an oral test. The successful candidates at the test will also be invited to attend for interview. See corkcoco.ie for more details.
The main cause of the grounding of the tall ship Astrid has been blamed on human error, a report has found. The 95-year-old Dutch vessel hit rocks near Oysterhaven on July 24th 2013. A largescale operation by the RNLI and the coastguard ensured that all 30 people on board were brought to safety. A report by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board outlined the immediate cause of the ship grounding and subsequent sinking was attributed to the loss of power from the main engine. “The main engine stopped as a result of fresh water contamination of the fuel,” outlined the report. “The cause

of the water contamination can be attributed to human error when taking on fresh water in Brighton on 12th July 2013. Once water contamination had been found, insufficient action was taken to ensure fresh water was removed from the fuel system.” It further stated that passage planning of the voyage from Oysterhaven to Kinsale was “inadequate” for a ship, and the planning “appears
to have been influenced by the desire for photograph opportunities for the Gathering event”. “The correct passage planning procedures should have been carried out and the Master should not have altered his passage in an unsafe manner to facilitate promotional activities,” said the report. The ship was also not certified as a passenger ship for

The report recommended the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport should explore mechanisms to ensure that sail training ships entering Irish waters and ports comply with the requirements of the International Conventions and European Union Law.

Love is all around us Giving birth, getting engaged and meeting for the first time are some of Cork people’s most memorable Valentine’s experiences according to a new survey carried out by Bord Gáis Energy. Even though people say we’re getting more cynical year on year, with the vast majority of those who responded said that they still look forward to celebrating ‘the most romantic day of the year’. Half of us will exchange gifts to make the occasion, and a romantic weekend away tops the wish list. The survey also revealed, however, that 25% of us still leave it until the last minute to get a gift for our significant other, although 97% say they’re prepared to spend up to €100. Less encouragingly, 10% of people say they’ve broken up on Valentine’s Day, and one in three couples in a long–term relationship claim to have banned Valentine’s celebrations. Strangely, a third of single people in Cork are prepared to celebrate Valentine’s

Cork house prices rise The price of an average three– bed, semi–detached house in Cork city rose by 35.9% in 2014, according to a national survey by The Real Estate Alliance (REA), a countrywide group of property professionals. They reported that the average price in Cork city currently stands €265,000, with the market seeing a 6% rise from September to December last year. REA O’Donoghue & Clarke in Cork city also predict a rise of 10% in prices in 2015, following the end of the uncertainty over the Central Bank’s mortgage deposit rules. Nationally, the average three-bed semi now costs €184,713, according to the REA and although ‘semidees’ in Dublin recorded a 21.66% increase over the year, the biggest rise was in the commuter counties and large cities such
as Cork and Galway. “Our survey shows that in all areas of Dublin, parts of Cork City, Galway City, North Wicklow and Kildare, the price of the average semi–detached house exceeds the Central Bank’s new threshold of €220,000 at which banks can lend 90%
of the value,” said Philip Farrell, CEO of Real Estate Alliance. “However, other parts of Wicklow, Kildare, Louth and Meath all offer average housing under that limit for those looking to buy in the commuter belt with accessibility to Dublin.”

€150,000 awarded to 134 arts projects in Cork Cork County Council recently awarded €150,000 in grant money to a variety of groups and individual artists in County Cork under the Arts Grant Scheme 2014. The scheme supports arts activities and events at local and county level that have been developed by artistic individuals or community groups such as youth organisations, schools, special needs services and organisations working with older people. Voluntary groups involved in activities such as visual arts, drama, choirs, pipe and brass bands and festivals, were also included in the grant allocation as they also play a huge role in promoting arts in the county. “The commitment of Cork County Council to continue its financial support of our Arts Grant Scheme in 2015 is indeed a very positive move,” said John Paul O’Shea, Independent Councillor for North Cork. “The variety of such in-

on RTÉ television. She was the only Irish competitor at the 400+ delegate event and also headed up an international team of balloon artists for an elaborate entry into the Large Sculpture Category. Her team who came in third place were made up of participants from Singapore, Australia and the States and together they created a large boat made of foil balloons called “Sail away with me”. Her fourth award was presented for a solo entry to the Centrepiece Display category. The judges were particularly impressed by the hand painted balloons, which ap-
peared like blown glass. This highly specialised and decorative technique made Jenny’s entry unique to the competition. Jenny, formally a property auctioneer, made the switch to balloon artistry and followed her passion by opening a balloon business in 2009. Red Balloon has grown from strength to strength and her company now employs four part time staff. The team specialises in large balloon display for corporate, wedding decor, functions and parties. Daytripper Interview by Maria Tracey Picture by Rob Lamb
Line producer at The Everyman, Naomi Daly (31) lives in the city centre with her boyfriend Brian Miller.
“
I hate getting out of bed and have about four alarms set. I’m a snoozer. I downloaded an app recently, Sleep Cycle, that monitors your sleeping pattern. I started it when we began production on Faust at The Everyman. You can tell on the high pressure days, I don’t sleep afterwards. You know yourself whether you get a good night’s sleep or not, but I find it interesting the app, like a personal experiment. I normally wake up about 8am and do what everyone says you shouldn’t do and read my emails first. With the phone, my office is right beside me. I don’t have breakfast before heading out the door and instead get a latte — with one sugar — at The Bookshelf café on my way to work. I might pop into Marks & Spencer for porridge, or get some at Perry Street Market. And of course, there’s always O’Flynn’s Gourmet Sausages on Winthrop Street. I walk in every morning, as it clears the head. I hate carrying an umbrella and instead throw on a hat, and listen to a podcast like Radiolab, which I love as I adore science. Sometimes I’ll call my mum en route. I’ve to phone her once a day. My siblings all live in Kerry: I’m the only one living away from home, so if I don’t check in once a day, my mum will think something horrible has happened. On day two, she’ll send the gardaí to find me! I’m from a little fishing village called Fenit and my Cork accent is infiltrating my Kerry one a bit. However, what always sets me right is a half hour with my granddad. If I sit down with him I’ve the thickest Kerry accent going again! My day typically starts at 10am, however, if I don’t finish until 11pm the previous evening, I tend to take 12 hours in–between. The first thing in the morning I do is check the post, as everything for production comes to me. I’m responsible for the budget, and have to keep track of what’s been ordered, what hasn’t, and want

is needed. I then say ‘hi’ to the box office and check in with the staff on the way up the stairs. I work on the second to last floor at The Everyman, so there’s a lot of stairs! I started here 10 years ago, as a PA to the artistic director at the time. I love learning, and with the job I got to see how production worked, seeing the points being hit. When Pat (Talbot) left, my job role changed, and moved to production assistant and a few years later I was promoted to line producer. I would be the first person who starts working on a production, and my first one is Faust. I was involved in putting together the
80+ EXHIBITORS
Arts Council application for that — although we did have to change our decision on the opera at the last minute as we got wind another company was applying for the same opera — and also other aspects like sourcing all of the 42 musicians needed. There was also the auditions for the principal singers, working with set and costume designers, making sure I’ve measurements for everyone, have everything ordered online in advance, source props, and getting all the contracts down for everyone in the show, which is close to 100 people. And I’m also working with whatever is in–house, which back late last year was the

panto, another major production! A structured, normal, quiet day for me would be 10-6… but that’s never happened. I prefer to stay on anyway until the job is done, like if I’ve a list of emails to send off or scanning to do. Recently I had to scan all the music for the orchestra. I thought ‘I’ve just two hours of scanning left, I’ll keep going’ but it was 42 pieces for 42 musicians, some 70 pages long, so six hours later I was finished. But I got it it done and didn’t have to look at it since. For dinner, I’ve discovered that if I buy my boyfriend Brian a cook book, he likes to try it
out. We went to Thailand in 2008, and he loved Thai curries so I bought him a cook book… and it turned out to be really interesting! Now, on birthdays or Christmas, he gets a book. Lunch every day tends to be what’s for dinner that night before, like chili or stew. I’ll bring a lunch box with leftovers but I’m not one to make sandwiches in the morning. I’m also a roller derby referee, but had to take a break for nine months, although I’m back in March. I had a set of skates as a child, which were made redundant after we built an extension in the house and I couldn’t skate around in a full circle anymore.
I’d get to one corner, toe stop, and turn back around. I wasn’t on skates again until 2010, and a friend of mine told me about the Rebel County Rollers, as they were called at the time. She said I should be a referee because if you give me a whistle I’m happy and I love learning rules! I think there was a veiled compliment in there somewhere. I spent time learning the game, and then put wheels on my feet and spent the entire evening on my backside. I went back the following Thursday and spent less time on my backside and built it up. I’m determined. I take after my mum, there’s a strong stubborn streak through us. I discovered crochet a few years ago as a friend of mine had a baby and I said, ‘I’m going to make a hat for the baby’. That was it. I then realised that while I was crocheting it was relaxing, as I wasn’t thinking about work, or making lists in my mind. I also love watching watching rugby and haven’t missed a Six Nations match in 10 years. I’m now terrified that with Faust on at the same time, I’ll miss a game. But there is RTÉ Player and people are recording games for me in case. I head to bed around 11.30pm and I’m on the Kindle if I remember to charge it. At the moment I’m reading Bill Bryson’s One Summer: America, 1927 – but I’m only eight chapters in. I started reading it at Christmas! I’ll also drift off reading the BBC news, or we’ll pop a David Attenborough DVD into the laptop, and his voice is like a lullaby. In life, I’m all about being happy. I remember as a kid being asked, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ and my answer was ‘be happy’. That’s my philosophy. If you enjoy want you are doing, you never work a day in your life.” Charles Gounod’s Faust opens at The Everyman on Friday, February 20th, for five performances only. Tickets are €45/€36/€20 from everymancork.com or 021 4501673.

Harbour festival sees maritime alliances Mayfield resident Derry McSweeney, who retires at the end of this week from UCC General Services/Security after 45 years, presents a cheque for €5520 to BUMBLEance. Picture by: Tomas Tyner, UCC.
Big boost for BUMBLEance A University College Cork employee who was “essential” in a fundraising bid for a children’s charity is retiring this week, with one of his last jobs being the presentation of a cheque to the charity. Derry McSweeney, who is originally from Mayfield and now livies in Carrigaline, is retiring after 45 years of service with UCC General Services/Security. He also played a role in the Christmas fundraiser for BUM-
BLEance organised by UCC Security, and presented the organisation with a cheque for €5520 this week. Sarah Courtney, chair of the Parents’ Association in St Catherine’s National School, Model Farm Road, also presented the €520 proceeds from the school’s Christmas dress–up day to support the work of BUMBLEance, which is a non–profit state–of–the–art ambulance for critically ill children.
Ocean to City and Cork Harbour Open Day have announced that they will join forces to launch a new maritime festival, ‘Ocean to City Cork Harbour Festival.’ The new festival will see Cork Harbour Open Day, which normally takes place in September, move to Ocean To City week in order to coincide with the Ocean To City race, also known as An Rás Mór. This new partnership will bring a stronger and more impactful festival to Cork City and Harbour, which will take place over the June Bank Holiday weekend, from May 30th to June 1st. An Rás Mór, Ocean to City’s rowing race, already attracts thousands of spectators every year. Taking place in Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, it has grown into flagship event that celebrates Ireland’s unique maritime culture and
heritage and draws competitors, spectators and boating enthusiasts from all over the world. Cork Harbour Open Day will strengthen the festival with its strong network of harbour agencies, as well as a range of successful events including open days on Spike Island and Camden Fort Meagher, crab fishing, rescue
demonstrations by the Irish Coastguard and kayaking lessons. The festival’s organisers are currently asking organisations around Cork City and Harbour to join in the new maritime festival by organising an event for the programme. Those interested should contact harbourevents@
corkharbour.ie and request an application form. The new Cork Harbour Festival will see a number of big agencies work together, including: Meitheal Mara, Port of Cork, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, Irish Naval Service, UCC, NCMI, IMERC as well as a range of other organisations in the city and harbour.

Selfie respect at CIT As part of Cork Institute of Technology’s participation in the Inspiring Women in STEM (I Wish) event, 200 transition year students took part in a mass female STEM selfie (or ‘STEMfie’) this week. In a world first, the students snapped the epic selfie alongside industry sponsors and CIT Staff before tweeting their STEMfies, with an I Wish
aspiration, to their chosen female STEM Role models. CIT hosted a regional hub for a morning of exhibitions and presentations aimed at promoting greater female participation in STEM. The event culminated in a Cork City Hall event encompassing CIT, UCC, IT@Cork, Cork Chamber of Commerce and Cork City Council. I Wish aims to address
the gender imbalance in STEM. EMC, VMware, Boston Scientific, Pharma Chemical Ireland and Asystec, CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory and CIT Coder Dojo hosted interactive exhibits, attended by more than 1,000 students. To see a selection of the photographs snapped on the day, follow #STEMfie and @CIT on Twitter.

Cork exhibition celebrates generations of genius Cork is cementing its position at the heart of traditional Irish music with the launch of a new photographic exhibition featuring some of the most influential Irish musicians of the last few decades. Cork–based photographer
Clare Keogh, the coordinator of the exhibition, drove over 1100 miles in a matter of weeks to meet the featured musicians in their ‘native habitat’. “They were just so accommodating and laid back, and
I just got into that attitude too,” she told The Cork News. “I think I clocked up about 1100 miles if not more, from Cork to Kerry, back to Cork, back to Kerry, up to Limerick, around Clare, up to Galway, then to Mayo, Leitrim, really
rural Sligo, then back down through Dublin and Waterford. Instead of travelling to towns I was travelling to people and that was very nice. Micheál Ó Suilleabháin told me we should go astray more often, because that’s when you
do you end up with the bigger picture.” The exhibition, entitled Nádúr An Cheoil - Máistrí Ghradam Cheoil TG4 will take place at The Atrium in Cork City Hall from February 20th to March 13th and is

“No democracy” say boycott planners The People’s Convention (CPPC) in Cork has confirmed that a protest march will take place in Cork city this Saturday, March 14th. The organisation has called for a mass boycott of Irish Water, including their bills and the installation of water meters. The CPPC is asking for the public to assemble with them at Connolly Hall for 2:00pm to march to a rally on Patrick’s Street, where a variety of speakers will address the crowd. Diarmaid Ó Cadhla of the CPPC, told The Cork News “this is a pro–boycott people’s event, organised on a non–party political basis: everyone is invited to participate, whatever their background.” He also urged
Diarmaid Ó Cadhla
“ Our constituencies are not represented in Dáil Éireann: the party whips are, and we must look to end this corrupt practice at the next election.”
people to commit to the mass boycott, stating that “if people don’t pay when the bills come in April, then Irish Water will be defeated.” Ó Cadhla said that the government’s persistence with efforts to impose the water charges, despite the huge public outcry, showed that the “the general will of the people is not what determines the policy of our state; we are ruled over by narrow, vested interests.” He continued, “The imposition of this tax, like others in recent years, reveals the lack of democracy in our country and people should protest against that.” According to Ó Cadhla, “it is the illusion of democracy created with the party system that keeps us back. Our constituencies are not represented in Dáil Éireann: the party whips are, and we must look to end this corrupt practice at the next election.”

A recent survey by Durex ahead of Valentine’s Day shows that a third of Cork adults have admitted that they lack inspiration when it comes to experimenting in the bedroom. To lend a helping hand, Durex has launched a tantalising new ‘expert guide’ and a video called #50GamesToPlay, which should prove useful to the one– in–three Cork adults planning to try something new in the bedroom on Valentine’s Day. The video and guide will also prove interesting to the 31% who have fantasised about adding something fresh to their sex life, but have never taken any action.
“Playing and experimenting together increases trust and intimacy. Couples draw inspiration for things to try in the bedroom from films and books, but it can be hard to know how to successfully translate things we’ve seen on screen or read in saucy novels into reality! This new video and the #50GamesToPlay Guide will hopefully give Cork couples a little push in the right direction and get them thinking, get them communicating, and get them turned on!” said a Durex spokesperson. The full #50GamesToPlay Guide can be downloaded for free from 50gamestoplay.durex.com.

The IndieCork festival got an international thumbs up this week when UK cultural journal The Skinny cited it on their International Events Calendar as one of the festivals they were most excited about in 2015. IndieCork is listed alongside such long–established film heavyweights as the Berlin, Karlovy Vary and Toronto festivals. IndieCork’s Festival Manager Eibh Collins said they were delighted by the nod. “We model ourselves on South By South West in the US, with its mixture of indie cinema and indie
music, so we’re chuffed to be mentioned in such prestigious company,” she said. Programmers Úna Feely and Mick Hannigan are just back from the Clermont–Ferrand Short Film Festival where Irish production Somewhere Down The Line won the Best Animation award. The film was produced by Kilkenny company Cartoon Saloon, whose latest feature Song Of The Sea has been nominated for an Oscar. The 2015 edition of IndieCork will run from October 4th to 11th and is now accepting entries.

Competition winners Lusitania revisited We had three giveaways in last week’s edition of The Cork News and were inundated, via post, email and Facebook, with thousands of entries. It’s good to know that demand is so high for the best in food and accommodation that Cork has to offer! Unfortunately, in spite of the sheer volume of entries, we had to limit ourselves to one winner for each prize, so congratulations to Lillian Nagle Walsh of the Model Farm
Road in Cork, who won our Isaac’s Supper Club Prize, Mary Kelleher in Waterfall, the winner of our Rosscarbery prize, and Mary O’Keeffe from Rochestown, who won a romantic dinner for two at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to enter, and keep an eye out in the future for more of the same here in the pages of The Cork News every Friday!

Dear Lorcan, The Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat off the old Head of Kinsale on May 7th 2015. There will be a public lecture this week by Dr Michael Martin, where we will query why it was targeted and what was its true cargo. We also remember the 1,198 passengers and crew
who died on that day and the heroic attempts of local boatmen who went to her aid. The lecture is on Wednesday, February 18th, at Coffa House on Church Street near Shandon at 7.30. Everybody is welcome! Thank you, Maeve Higgins
Great houses talk Dear Lorcan, Muskerry Local History Society is presenting a very interesting lecture by Richard Wood on the Great Houses of County Cork and beyond. This illustrated lecture will examine the architecture and lifestyle of some of the great
houses from our own locality and further afield. The lecture will be held in Ballincollig Rugby Club at 8.00 pm on Monday, February 16th and all are welcome. Regards Dermot Lucey

Make a konnection The modern professional workplace is all about networking and connections, and one Cork startup is making waves worldwide, helping people to get back in touch with old friends. By Róisín Thornhill
T
hey say that necessity is the mother of invention and to that end when we find ourselves in a difficult situation we are inspired to find a solution to the obstacles that face us. A few years ago, when working on her first start up, Jayne Ronayne (main picture, right), a graduate of the Ignite Graduate Innovation Programme at University College Cork, came across such an obstacle. While intending to travel to the US to promote her business, Ronayne came into difficulty trying to connect with UCC alumni based in San Francisco, who were working in the technology sector. She found it almost impossible to make any connections with the university’s alumni as UCC had almsot no up–to–date contact information on its former students. The challenges Ronayne faced in trying to source con-

keting director, Aidan Murphy. “To break it down, we are a software company; we launched just about a year ago. We help second– and third–level educational institutions reconnect with their alumni,” he tells me. In America it is very much the cultural norm to give back to your educational institution; in fact in 2013 the Council for the Advancement of Student Education celebrated the 100th anniversary of the original Association of Alumni Secretaries. This cultural belief in giving back can be illustrated by the fact that between the 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 school years 63% of Princeton alumni donated money back to the school. This tradition however, is not as popular here. Typically, once graduates leave the education system, the network and relationships they have built break down. “The alumni engagement system in Ireland is ten to twenty years behind the trend in America, as people tend to be wary when their former
college or university contacts them. They automatically assume it is for monetary donations. The key challenge is to change the culture, there are other ways to donate, be it donating time or mentoring alumni,” says Murphy. And yet, although the US leads the way in alumni contact the software they use is quite out of date, and many

universities have only a phone number for a graduate. KonnectAgain aims to change that, using a cloud– based platform to manage all alumni tasks and responsibilities. According to their website, KonnectAgain wants “to help alumni officers to get away from data gathering and back to their true purpose of engaging and supporting
alumni, while reaping the rewards for their university in return.” The company invites alumni to connect with the platform through their social media profiles; the most popular being through LinkedIn. This provides the college or university with automatically updated alumni information. “This can be very beneficial

in terms of fundraising for the educational institution, be it extending a library or building a computer lab,” says Murphy. It also benefits the alumni themselves, providing them with a closed network where they can find past schoolmates or connect with graduates that are in the same field as them, hoping to secure a job for the future.
It’s exciting times for the start–up. In November they held their first conference on alumi engagement in Iveagh House, headquarters of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; the first conference of its kind in Ireland. Over eighty attendees came to hear prestigious speakers from the world of social media as well as leading figures
in alumni relations, including Raphe Beck who, with an annual budget of $5 million and a team of 19, serves and engages with the 28,000 alumni of the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Fresh from the success of their first conference, KonnectAgain (whose first four employees are all UCC graduates) has made its first US hire, in San Francisco. Liza Bennigson joins as Director of Business Development as the company expands with force into North America. After spending nine years as the Director of Alumni Relations at the Menlo School, an independent college preparatory school in Atherton, California, Bennigson — who had spent over a decade in development with schools and non-profits — was so impressed with what KonnectAgain were trying to achieve that after she attended one of their presentations in California, she asked to join the company. “Liza contacted us and told us she couldn’t stop thinking about KonnectAgain and she wanted to be part of the team to grow the product in the US” Murphy informs
me. Speaking about her appointment Liza had this to say: “[I am] excited to share the power of KonnectAgain with colleagues, and help the company become a globally– recognized technology and thought leader in the alumni relations sector and beyond.” And while the company primarily focusses on the endowment–friendly US market, it is also active in the UK and Ireland. It has already signed up Dublin Institute of Technology and Durham University in England as clients. It recently turned down a €500,000 investment bid from a UK party, and is instead relying on funding from a private investor while continuing to pursue alternative funding in the US. It is also branching out, developing a more commercial wing that helps consultancy businesses and other large employers connect with their extensive employee alumni. The growth of the Konnect Again team has seen them expand to another office in the prestigious Dogpatch Labs, a pay–to–play co–working space for startups located in the CHQ building in the

heart of the ISFC in Dublin, while maintaining a base on the Monahan Road in Cork. Plans are also afoot for their next goals, securing more investment and organising their next conference. “Our plan is to hold the conference in London in March or April, I’ve just been to over there to
finalise the details and met with potential speakers and discussed future trends in alumni relations: it is a great opportunity for us to get to know our market in the UK and see what the future holds” says Murphy. For more information see konnectagain.com.

Pancake perfection T
uesday 17th is Pancake Tuesday, and to celebrate we’re bringing two perfect pancake treats — one sweet, one savoury — to you courtesy of Cork’s Sugarcube on South Mall. These recipes will serve eight people, but that doesn’t mean you’re obliged to share! Ingredients • 100g Plain flour • 2 Eggs • 300ml Semi-skimmed milk
• 1 tbsp Sunflower oil / vegetable oil plus extra for frying • Pinch of salt Sugarcube’s vegetarian savoury option • 2 Chopped and roasted Peppers • 6 Chopped mushrooms • 300g Tomato and red onion salsa • 100g Mixed leaves Sugarcube’s sweet option • 3 Punnets of strawberries • 1 Jar of Nutella
Method • First blend your flour: Put the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle, pour 50ml of milk and 1tbsp of oil into the mix. Then start whisking from the centre, slowly mixing the flour into the centre. Once all the flour is mixed, whisk until you create a smooth, thick paste. • When that is done, slowly add more milk to loosen the batter very slightly. Continue

pouring the remainder of the milk while whisking until you get a nice consistency of a creamy, ever–so–slightly thick batter. • Heat the pan over a medium heat and add a dash of oil. Then ladle some of your scrumptious mixture into the pan whilst turning it to make sure you get a thin, even layer. Leave for roughly 30 seconds before flipping the pancake (the flip method isn’t as hard as you might think, but we won’t tell anyone if you have
to use a spatula) and lowering the temperature. For Savoury • Add a handful of your roasted red peppers and mushrooms to your turned pancake. Leave to cook for 30 seconds so that the pan heats the vegetables through. Then add your mixed leaves, tomato and red onion salsa as desired. Leave the lot to cook through for roughly 15 seconds. Slide it out in one smooth movement and bask
in its delicious beauty! For Sweet • Spread your nutella across the entire pancake in the pan in one smooth even movement. Add a handful of strawberries, making sure they’re spread evenly, and cook for 30-45 seconds depending on how you warm you like your strawberries. • Slide onto a plate (you can fold it if you’re worried about wasting any of that delicious fruit) and enjoy!

Food for (romantic) thought It may be Valentine’s weekend, but romantic inclinations can happen anywhere, at any time. Where better than the kitchen, where you don’t have to look too far to find a few libido–lifting aphrodisiacs? They may or may not work (we take no responsibility in either event) but at the very least they’re healthy and nutritious! Bananas: Nothing to do with their shape, bananas
are packed full of potassium and magnesium, as well as a healthy crop of vitamins, all of which provide a boost to your body chemistry. Chocolate: A scientifically– proven aphrodisiac, chocolate can prompt your brain to release a flood of delightful endorphins, accentuating feelings of love and relaxation. A large box of delicious dark chocolates isn’t just romantic, it’s sexy too!
Honey: Gooey and sticky, honey has been enjoyed for thousands of years. It’s only recently that it’s been shown to help women to make oestrogen, and it may also provide a testosterone boost for men. Almonds: Thought by the ancients to be a distinctly naughty nut, almonds are traditionally held to have a libidinous effect on women. The literature doesn’t say
anything about their effect on the guys, unfortunately, but they’re delicious and good for you regardless. Asparagus: Yes yes, we all know what asparagus’s most famous effect on body chemistry is. Less well known is the effect its septuple–whammy of vitamins and minerals can have on your energy levels, as well as a systemic histamine boost which makes your nerve endings more sensitive.

TV3 is calling out for contestants for the highly anticipated third series of The Great Irish Bake Off. Presented by Anna Nolan, the baking show is once again looking for a new batch of passionate bakers to battle it out for the coveted title of ‘Ireland’s Best Amateur Baker’. Will a male baker win again, like Stephen Chisholm in 2013? Or maybe a busy working mother like Kerry’s Tracy Coyne fron 2014? We think it’s about time that the crown came to Cork, and if it does then we’d love

8º The Full Irish is beer of the year North Cork’s Eight Degrees brewery has achieved a double–whammy of accolades in the space of just a few days, qualifying as finalists in the Small Firms Association manufacturing awards and seeing their The Full Irish beer hailed as 2015’s beer of the year. The single malt IPA, described as “a hop bomb” by the rapidly–expanding brewery, was declared the best beer of 2015 by the independent consumer group Beoir, facing off against 127 eligible Irish beers. The Full Irish is brewed using 100% Irish malt and showcases the best home–

Owner–brewer Cameron Wallace said “credit goes to our head brewer Mike Magee and the Malting Company of Ireland whose base malt can stand up to all those hops – no easy task!” Last year 8º Amber Ella American Amber Ale won a bronze medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup in Denver, Coloradom, the world’s most prestigious beer festival. Save on water To quote Samuel Taylor Coleridge “water, water, everywhere”, as H2O is on the nation’s lips at the moment. Irish Water and meters aside, Chadwicks, a leading supplier of builders and plumbers materials, published some water conservation ideas at chadwicks. ie/blog/how-to-save-on-waterat-home-infographic/.
Top tips include always ensuring that a dishwasher and washing machine are fully loaded before use, and keeping a jug of water in the fridge instead of running the tap and waiting for cold water. It’s also advised to only fill your kettle with as much water as you need and to not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods.
Chadwicks water by numbers 150 – Amount in litres that each person in Ireland uses per day 81% – Percentage of Irish people who misjudge how much water they use 7,000 – Litres saved per year if you turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
9,000 – Litres saved in a year by switching to showers and reducing shower time by just one minute 20 – Litres a standard dishwasher uses per cycle 75 – Percentage of water usage in the home that occurs in the bathroom

Prepare for Daffodil Day 73 people in Cork are diagnosed with cancer every week, and cancer rates in the county have increased by 4% in just the last three years. Daffodil Day, supported by Dell, will take place in Cork on Friday, March 27th. This year marks the 28th anniversary of Ireland’s longest running and biggest fundraising day. The growth in cancer incidence is sure to have a direct impact on the Irish Cancer Society’s services – increasing the need for the people in Cork to support Daffodil Day so they can reach their fundraising target of €3.5 million for 2015. Speaking at the launch, John McCormack, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Cancer Society said, “Every family in Cork is touched by cancer, and these new figures confirm that cancer rates are
growing. As cancer is increasing so are our efforts to fight it. As the national cancer charity we are working harder to ensure that every family in need of support in Cork has access to our services. To meet the increased demand for help as more people get and survive cancer, we need to raise even more money this year on Daffodil Day.” Night Nursing is just one service funded by Daffodil Day. Last year the society was able to fulfil 96% of requests for a night nurse. 75% of terminal patients wish to die at home surrounded by family, yet only 25% get to do so. The Irish Cancer Society provides the only night time care service for cancer patients in their own homes. In 2014 the society’s nurses provided 646 nights of care to 192 patients in Cork.
One billion rising in Cork One Billion Rising will mark the ‘global revolution’ to end violence against women and girls this Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14th, from 7pm to 11pm at St. Aloysius School on Sharman Crawford Street in Cork. One Billion Rising wants Corkonians to help create new artistic initiatives focussed on equality, dignity and freedom for all women and girls. One Billion Rising highlights that in 2013 alone, 1474 people contacted Mná Feasa to receive support for domestic violence in Cork. This represents six requests for help per day. Globally, one woman in five will experience abuse in a relationship, and will not seek
help until this happens on average 30 times. Cork’s One Billion Rising will feature a showing of the V-Day documentary Until the Violence Stops at 7pm followed by dancing, art workshops, tasty refreshments and screenings of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues in solidarity with risings all over the world. A €5 donation is suggested and all proceeds will go to domestic violence resource centres Mná Feasa and OSS, as well as The Sexual Violence Centre in Cork. For more information or to volunteer, email vdaycork@ gmail.com or see One Billion Rising-Revolution Cork on Facebook.
‘Pink lady’ Maisie Costelloe from Kinsale leaves as actress and writer Tara Flynn; singer Sharon Crosbie and all the volunteers wave goodbye at the registration day for the fourth Kinsale Pink Ribbon walk on Sunday 1st March 2015 at 12pm in aid of Action Breast Cancer. Picture by: John Allen
Kinsale pretty in pink for cancer awareness By Maureen Sullivan On March 1st, the picturesque town of Kinsale will host its fourth annual Pink Ribbon Walk to raise funds for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society that aims to provide top quality information, support and care to people living with breast cancer. Maria O’Mahony is one of the founding organisers of the event in Kinsale. When she was approached about getting involved, she didn’t hesitate. “I’d had cancer during the previous 18 months and I wanted
to do something in return,” she said. “The Action Breast Cancer programme was something that was good to me during the previous two years, so it was my turn say ‘let’s give something back.’” “We surprised people in the town. The community spirit was amazing and in the first year of the walk we raised €102,849.” Maria knows what it takes to run a successful event: “It’s hard work,” she said, “but the community spirit that we experienced the first year cemented what we had done and gave us the drive to go for it again for the second year.”
Last year, almost 1,100 people registered for the Kinsale Pink Ribbon walk and this year, Maria hopes that they will record a similar number. Over 100 people from Dublin are already booked to come down by bus, having participated last year. “They’ll have a fun weekend as well,” Maria said. “There’s a great spirit in the town running up to the event and this weekend, the town will be turning pink as local businesses donate €20 to become a Pink Partner.” The walk, beginning at 12 noon, is not just for the ladies: “What people sometimes forget is that men can get breast can-
cer too,” Maria says. “Quite a number of men walk or run the 10k and they are happy to wear pink, too!” The business community in Kinsale has generously sponsored raffle prizes, including a holiday in France for a family of five worth €2,500, dinner for two at a top–class local restaurant and an overnight stay, with breakfast, with one of Kinsale’s superb accommodation providers. Raffle tickets are €5 and can be purchased in advance by sending the name of the entrant, along with a cheque made payable to ‘Kinsale Pink Ribbon’ to 71 Main Street, Kinsale.

What’s Your Story? Trend Micro, a global leader in security software with headquarters in Cork, has launched its 2015 “What’s Your Story?” video and poster competition. Now in its fourth year, the video and poster competition encourages youths and schools to share their personal experiences online and answer the question “What have you learned that could help someone going online for the first time?” All video and poster submissions will be judged on their ability to inspire, as well as how effectively entrants have promoted their entries via social media. “Giving young people a voice to express themselves on Internet safety is at the heart of the ‘what’s your story?’ competition”, says Avril Ronan, Global Program Manager for Internet
Safety at Trend Micro EMEA: “The competition is a unique opportunity for young people to tell us how they can make the Internet a better place for themselves and everyone else.”
‘Whats Your Story?’ finalists will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the fields of Internet safety, media literacy, and technology. Winners will be announced in May. To learn
more about the competition, submit a video, or see past winners, visit whatsyourstory. trendmicro.ie and follow @ TrendISKF_IE #WhatsYourStory2015.

There will also be two fully–qualified breastfeed-
ing counsellors at every meeting and of course, babies and toddlers are welcome, and there will be plenty of books and toys to entertain them. See details of all Cuidiú support groups at cuidiucork.net.

Cork’s Wig Clinic has developed a reputation as leading specialists in chemotherapy and alopecia wigs, hair pieces and accessories. Owners Fiona O’Riordan and Lisa Myers explain how their mother Elizabeth’s chemotherapy–related hair loss inspired them. “It was very upsetting for us,” explains Fiona: “she was simply handed a wig in a box. She wasn’t shown how to fit it or care for it. She loved her hair and was a perfectionist. I just knew there had to be a better way, a more caring approach.” Since then The Wig Clinic on Barrack Street has gone from strength to strength, catering for all aspects of hair loss, including that caused by alopecia, from hair enhancers to top pieces that can be fully styled and integrated, to full hair pieces or wigs. The results can be life changing and
have a huge effect on a client’s self esteem. “Many of our calls are from newly diagnosed cancer patients,” continues Fiona: “It is a heart wrenching time for all concerned but one we are trained to deal with in a caring and empathetic manner. We are here throughout the journey, right up to hair regrowth when we offer a complimentary first trim.” For more information call 021 4318468 or email info@ wigclinic.com.

See the subcontinent I ndia is packed with fun and excitement every season brings with it new celebrations. The birthdays of gods and goddesses, saints and prophets, historical events and the advent of the New Year are all celebrated with vibrant festivities. Or, if India is not adventurous enough for you, why venture to the Dragon Kingdom of Bhutan or magnificent Nepal, home of Mount Everest? In India you can witness the spectacle of the Taj Mahal in Agra, explore the great royal cities and palaces of the Raj, marvel at the wilds of the vast Ranthambore National Park, the deserts and colourful forts of the west; and journey south to historical temples, tropical forests and exotic coastlines. To begin your journey in India the Golden Triangle in Rajasthan is a must–do. Known
as the Golden Triangle, the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur showcase India’s rich Mughal and Rajput heritage: imposing forts, sumptuous palaces and gleaming marble temples and tombs, such as the exquisite Taj Mahal itself. You never know what you’ll what modes of transport you will pass along the way — perhaps a donkey or even an elephant or camel. Driving in any city or town in India is insane, so you’re definitely better off with an escorted tour! In Jaipur visit the Amber Fort with its royal halls decorated with intricate ivory, mirrors, glass and exquisite paintings, and make sure to take in a special spiritual experience with a Hindu Aarti ceremony at the riverside steps of the Ganges. It’s also worth visiting Khajuraho, where the temples are celebrated worldwide for their in-
tricate and erotic Kama Sutra carvings. From New Delhi take a flight to Kathmandu in Nepal with its ancient Royal Palace complex, laced with temples, courtyards and statues, and home to the Kumari, Nepal’s living goddess. Visit Swayambhunath, the most ancient and enigmatic of the valley’s holy shrines, and the sky piercing temple of Teleju. View Pashupatinath Temple on the banks of the Bagmati, one of the holiest Hindu shrines, and continue to Bodhnath, a colossal stupa and Nepal’s most important Buddhist site, then round off your sightseeing with a visit the ancient capital of Bhadgaon, with innumerable temples and architectural showpieces. For the more adventurous traveller, Bhutan is an intriguing country that prides itself on its approach to sus-
tainable tourism. It’s a mystical kingdom, where magnificent fortresses command the hilltops and prayer flags flutter in the breeze. When ‘National Happiness’ is government policy you know you’re in for something special! Your first stop should be Changangkha Lhakhang, a fortress–like temple and monastic school, or the beautiful Phobjikha Valley. Nestled in the surrounding slopes, visit the great Gangteng Monastery where you can watch the monks study and create beautiful works of art. Visit the Tiger’s Nest, perched on the side of a cliff, 900m above the Paro valley floor. This famous tiered temple of red and gold was founded by Guru Rinpoche who arrived on the back of his mistress, who had turned herself into a tigress. Take a trip up the valley to the ruined fort

Fresh from winning four separate accolades at the Irish Travel Trade Awards, Managing Director Tanya Airey of Sunway talks to Lorcan MacMuiris about the where to see this summer… “The most popular destination for Irish people is Spain,” Tanya Airey tells me, “whether that’s the mainland, the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands — in fact Minorca has just been brought back onto the Irish market and we operate into Mahón, in the north. It’s an absolutely gorgeous place. But the biggest destination for Sunway is really Turkey. We fly directly from Cork to Izmir, and from there it’s only a short hop to Kusadasi. It’s so popular that we actually take over a number of hotels in the region, so that they’re all 100% Irish. “Tunisia is also really popular: the beaches are all stunning white sand, they look like some-
thing you’d seen in the Caribbean. The hotels there have amazing facilities and you wouldn’t believe the value, especially for all–inclusive.” Cork to Faro in Portugal is also a hugely in–demand route and, says Tanya, it’s becoming more popular every year. In fact, all of Sunway’s direct routes out of Cork, which also include Malaga, Lanzarote and Las Palmas, are top destinations. Likewise their long–haul flights, which feature a short hop from Cork to London before jetting off for New York for shopping sprees, Las Vegas (especially popular with stags and hens) and Orlando (rather more family oriented).
Tanya explains why so many people choose an award–winning tour operator like Sunway over a DIY holiday: “First of all, all your transfers are included, and our representatives are there to help you with anything you need. There’s great peace of mind too, because we’re completely bonded: you’re protected just in case something goes wrong, tour operators are completely bonded. For instance, when people were stranded with the ash cloud a few years ago we made sure they stayed in their accommodation, were fed and watered and looked after and had their flights home all arranged as soon as possible.”

Drive 13 February 2015
Twingo a go-go
The rear–engined Twingo has some strange quirks, says Seán Creedon, and isn’t the best for large loads, but it’s certainly a lot of fun!
M
ore mature readers will no doubt remember the original VW Beetle with the engine at the rear. The new Beetle has the engine in the front, but last week I drove the new version of the Renault Twingo, which now has its engine to the rear. This is the third generation of the
Twingo, but the first to have the 1.0-litre petrol engine behind. The name Twingo comes from an amalgamation of the words ‘twist,’ ‘swing’ and ‘tango’, and the car itself is the result of a project in the 1980’s involving all major French auto makers and the French government. This version is a big improvement on the first two models and is based around
the same platform as Daimler’s Smart Forfour; the two vehicles are manufactured at the same factory in Slovenia. While the majority of new cars have engines at the front, a mechanic friend told me that there is a theory that with the engine at the back it pushes the car forward, rather than ‘pulling the body.’ There is a small bit of luggage space above the engine, but
despite an insulation layer the area can get a bit hot and you wouldn’t want to have fresh meat or ice cream in your shopping bag. Meanwhile it took a bit of expertise on my behalf to gain access to the front boot. It’s difficult to get it open, and I doubt if car thieves would even know how to do it. When you do manage to slide it open there is no luggage space; all you can do is top up the fluids and check the battery. I drove a pale blue version, which got some curious glances, but it’s also available in other bright colours. The interior is very bright thanks to a few touches of white on the dash and doors. The driving position is nice and high,
and rear end looks a bit like the old Renault 5. Regular readers will know that there are no fans of two– door cars in our house and at first glance I thought to myself ‘they won’t like this,’ but to their delight the handles for the rear doors are hidden. I found a little bit of a ‘whirr’ when I started up the engine, but having the engine in the rear means that it has to be well protected. It’s well covered, but you need to undo six screws to check for oil or anything else in the engine. In the cabin there is room for five at a tight squeeze, but it’s more comfortable with four people. The controls on the dash are fine, but the screen to see which radio station you have chosen is very
small. A useful phone cradle is provided, but I try and avoid a phone when driving. Once again, no vanity mirror in the version I drove, which meant unhappy front seat passengers. Prices start at €13,990 and, like most car companies, Renault has a PCP offer for €139 per month. There are three trim versions: Expression, Play and Dynamique. It’s a really funky looking car and there are plenty of bright colours to choose from. It should bring a bit of fun into your life, it will turn on the proverbial sixpence and is very easy to park. There are two Renault dealers in the Cork area: Kearys, Kinsale Road Roundabout and Kearys of Midleton.

Caddy’s back
Skoda goes virtual Skoda has nothing to prove anymore, having long since graduated from being the butt of many’s a joke (often interchangable with the still–laughable Lada) to being arguably the best cars, in terms of bang for your buck, coming out of Europe today. Now on an equal footing with parent company Volkswagen in terms of quality and reliability, Skoda has taken a leap into the 21st century in an unexpected and entertaining way. No, it’s nothing to do with electric power, which is no longer new or surprising, or
hydrogen, which has a few years yet before it makes it to the market. Nor is it to do with self–driving cars, though it’s only a matter of time. Skoda has instead gone for augmented reality for its Fabia line, blurring the boundary between buying a car and playing a video game. At a specially outfitted section of Waterloo Station in London, customers (and curious bystanders) can hop into an interactive Fabia and generate, in 3D and in real time, one hundred different options for how they’d like the car to look. The results,
which are completely immersive, are displayed with them in place, so they can customise the trim, colours, and other options to see from ‘the outside’ exactly which style of Skoda suits them. We’re not sure how long it will be before customers here in Cork have a chance to design their own Skoda from scratch (the car itself rumbles and vibrates as the virtual ‘work’ is done, which also sounds brilliant) but we’re certainly looking forward to popping in to Noel Deasy’s, Finbarr Galvin’s or Eamonn Tarrant’s to give it a whirl!

The fourth generation of Volkswagen’s enormously popular Caddy has been unveiled. The successor to the Caddy, which sold over 1.5 million vans worldwide over the last 11 years and is the leader in its class in Ireland, has taken a giant leap forward in terms of spec, engines, efficiency and feel. Volkswagen is keen to emphasise the new Caddy’s “class leading design, func-
tionality and technical innovation” — none of which is an idle boast. Alan Bateson, Managing Director at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, says “Caddy IV will reinforce the historical Caddy position as market leader in Ireland. With the lowest fuel consumption ever of less than four litres per 100 kms; the possibility to design your Caddy your way and the fact that it is the only vehicle within its segment that can offer a

This is great advice, provided the temperature remains below seven degrees and the ground surface is wet or icy. Manufacturers sometimes forget to highlight certain dangers above seven degrees or when mixing winter with summer and all–season tyres. Summer and all season tyres are constructed with similar rubber and casing, but the casings and compound used for winter tyres are different.
Their rubber is is softer and has multiple grooves or lines, allowing the tyre to heat up more quickly, and the flexible casing also creates more heat. The purpose of generating this heat and having a soft compound is to improve grip on ice and snow. Once the weather warms, however, these tyres can heat up too much. This can lead to lateral movement, which can increase braking distance. There is also far more noise from winter tyres and the rolling resistance is lower, which means you burn more fuel.
Consumers — especially young drivers — often fall into the trap of mixing winter and summer tyres when buying part–worn tyres. There is a major risk at normal speeds on twisty roads that the winter tyres can heat up too much, rolling on bends. It is also worth noting that when the temperature increases winter tyres will wear much faster than summer tyres. If you need to know more, contact info@tyrestop.ie for advice on the best tyres for your needs, as well as any other aspect of motoring.

Ireland prepares to take on France ‘It’s a massive step up from the weekend’ Ireland needs to up its game this weekend to remain in RBS 6 Nations contention, according to scrum half Conor Murray. The Munster man said the team’s performance in Rome last weekend will not be good enough at home to beat France tomorrow, Saturday. It took second half tries from Murray and Tommy O’Donnell to fend off the Italian threat last Saturday at the Stadio Olimpico, and the squad has highlighted a number of areas for improvement ahead of the game tomorrow at the Aviva
(kick off 5pm). “(That’s the) most important thing - I was there (in Rome) two years ago when we lost, but we got the win this time,” said Murray. “France this weekend is a huge, huge challenge and we’ve got a few areas to improve, so that’s our set-up for the week. We needed a big week at training and get little things right — which we didn’t — and then we can kick on. “It’s a massive step up from the weekend. You saw the standard set between Wales and England. That’s
the really high standard set for the championship. The Italy game will not be good enough to beat France this weekend,” he continued. “We’ve got to step up in a couple of areas and really take on this week and train really well.” Meanwhile, Highfield’s Heather O’Brien is to start in the eagerly-awaited Women’s RBS 6 Nations clash with defending champions France tonight, Friday. Ireland Women’s head coach Tom Tierney has made one change to the team that overcame Italy, with the game kicking off at Ashbourne RFC at 7.30pm. Katie Fitzhenry has been promoted from the bench to line out at inside centre, with Jackie
Shiels named among the replacements. Tierney, whose first game in charge finished in a 30-5 win in Florence, said: “It was great to get the result last week and there was some good things we can take out of the Italy clash. This week sees another step up for the players in terms of opposition. “Playing at home is a great plus for us and hopefully we will have a big Ashbourne crowd to make it a good atmosphere to help give those home supporters a good performance and a win.” That match will be streamed live on irishrugby.ie with a commentary team that includes former Ireland Women’s captain Fiona Coghlan.
Demons eye League crown Cork’s own C&S UCC Demons are now in full control of the Men’s Premier League. Last weekend’s 88-74 win against Travelodge Swords Thunder means the Leeside team only needs to win their remaining home games to wrap up their second ever league and cup double. Despite having won 14 out of 14 games, captain Shane Coughlan admitted the trip to the ALSAA last weekend was their toughest test to date. “Thunder without doubt put it up to us. They’re a fab-
ulous team. We weren’t at our best but Colin (O’Reilly) picked a five that would bring it home in the last quarter,” he said. O’Reilly himself added it was a game worthy of a potential title decider. “Thunder didn’t make any mistakes,” said the Demons player coach. “We just got into one of those zones that you get into throughout a game.” C&S UCC Demons now play DCU Saints this Sunday, February 15th (throw in 3.15pm) at the Mardyke Arena.
Cork City FC’s new jersey. Picture by: Doug Minihane.
New City jersey revealed The new Cork City FC home jersey has been unveiled, keeping to the traditional green with an offset white stripe. Cork City CEO Tim Murphy said: “We are delighted to launch our 2015 home jersey, which we hope will prove extremely popular with supporters. The 2015 away
jersey, which went on sale before Christmas, has proved extremely popular already, so we are hoping there will be a similar reaction to this jersey.” The Nike jersey, provided through Teamwear Ireland, will go on sale on Friday, February 27th and will be priced at €55 for adults and €45 for children’s sizes.

anz Hurling League games in the stadium, with Clare and Tipperary playing in later rounds. Tickets are available from gaa.ie and selected Centra and Supervalu stores for €10.

Mullane gets tough
A
fter dropping six stone in just 12 months, one Cork man is set for another whirlwind year. Colin Mullane (26), who lives in Mallow, has been signed to a top Cork modelling agency, is to participate in a bodybuilding event and will be taking on an endurance challenge next month. His life’s new departure comes after he kicked off a complete cardio workout last year, to drop his body fat. He later moved onto CrossFit style training, with both resistance and cardio for an overall body workout. Mullane now does a split of “bodybuilding type weight work, hitting each body part on different night with a CrossFit, Tabata, Highintensity interval training (HIIT) style workout at the end”. His diet consists of approximately 2,800 calories a day, eating high protein meals throughout the day such as almonds and chicken breast. The changes has seen him drop from 107kg to 70kg over 12 months. Mullane is now set to compete in a men’s fitness and physique bodybuilding event later this year with preparation to start from April. His next battle will be to compete in the 10km Toughathlon on Saturday, March 15th at Curraheen Park. The 10km obstacle course challenge is designed to test participants’ strength, stamina, endurance, agility, co-ordination, and balance. Mullane is set to run the race in aid of Marymount Hospice under the team name RunWithColin: “I am going to try and raise as much money as possible for Marymount. There isn’t a family in Ireland that hasn’t been touched by the cruel disease that is cancer and Marymount Hospice do incredible work for people in this situation,” he said. “I’m looking to get as many people as possible to join my team! All fitness levels are welcome.” For further details on how to join Team RunWithColin, contact Colin Mullane through his Facebook page.

Mealagh Valley run The picturesque Mealagh Valley will be the setting for a 10– mile road race next weekend. Taking place at the secluded and idyllic Bantry location on Sunday, February 22nd at 11am, the challenging hilly course is organised by Bantry AC. It includes a 5km road race, also leaving at 11am,
along with a 10–mile walkers’ challenge, which kicks off at 10am. Race director Geraldine O’Sullivan said: “We encourage all to participate in the ‘Ring’ run. From walkers to new runners who are part of community initiatives such as Fit 4 Life, to elite runners who use it as a challenging training run. We want to en-
courage all to get out and get fitter. It is a great way of seeing our beautiful west Cork scenery.” Funds raised from the race go towards The Mealagh Valley Community and the Build4Life Cystic Fibrosis charity. Pre entry is €15 at active. com or on the day for €20.

be given by chartered physiotherapist Neil Sheehan, who will discuss the most up–to–date information on injury prevention and tips for effective training as well as highlighting the principles of smart training. Places are limited for the
talk and will be given on a first–come–first–served basis. Clubs may send two delegates to attend and you are asked to reply with the names of those attending by February 17th. Email neil@westendcliniccork.com to book places.
Rafts ahoy for Mallow race The annual Mallow Search and Rescue raft run from Mallow bridge to Killavullen will take place next month. Ninety rafts are set to hit the water on Sunday, March 15th, to fundraise for the voluntary organisation, which assists
in water searches for missing persons at the request of the emergency services and affected families. Participants in the raft run are asked to register in advance, and sponsorship cards are now available for collec-
tion from the Mallow Search and Rescue base at Broom Lane, Mallow every evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. For more information contact John Woulfe on 087 6353850 or Ronan Looney on 085 2210078.

Thank you for the music… Irish musical heroes of the modern age are set to be honoured in Cork next week as TG4 Gradam Ceoil returns to Cork for the first time in 10 years. Play’s Maria Tracey chats to the legendary Máirtín O’Connor, on how new directions are opening up for Irish traditional music and why he will never drive up Patrick’s Hill again!
E
clectic. It takes just one word to sum up the TG4 Gradam Ceoil 2015 (Traditional Music Awards), which this year includes recipients such as Galway virtuoso Máirtín O’Connor, whose accordion– playing wizardry and range of compositions have been dazzling audiences for over 30 years, and innovative young musical group Ensemble Ériú, combining Clare roots with modern and jazz influences. The variety showcases just how Irish traditional music has evolved in recent years, something that O’Connor says has enriched the genre. “It’s a healthy thing to broaden the appreciation parameters,” outlines Máirtín, whose own illustrious musical career spans 40 years. “There is always a core element to Irish traditional music, with the vast body of tunes, the sessions, and so forth. With Ó Riada, it was brought into concert presentation format, and bands coming into the 70s such as Planxty, Dé Dannan and The Bothy Band
further increased the popularity of the music. We were probably the first generation of musicians that travelled around the world playing music because it was possible to do so, with the increased accessibility of air travel. And then other things pushed on the popularity of the music, like the Riverdance phenomenon. This modern format of an Irish dance show brought awareness of Irish music and dance, bringing it much more into the mainstream and world wide. “Various directions have opened up. I think it’s all for the good ultimately, and the Internet and YouTube have turned the world into a global village, of course. If someone is interested in learning Irish music somewhere in the world, then they can do it more readily. It makes the whole thing far more accessible and easier for people to engage with.” This strength of Irish traditional music is showcased through the list of recipients at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil 2015, with this year’s 17th annual
awards ceremony and concert taking place in Cork — the first time in a decade — at Cork Opera House on Sunday, February 22nd, broadcast live, for the first time, on TG4. The main award, Gradam Ceoil goes to Máirtín; while young Dublin uilleann piper Maitiú Ó Casaide receives Ceoltóir Óg (Young Musician). The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to legendary Tipperary box player Bobby Gardiner; and Ensemble Ériú gets Gradam Comharcheoil TG4 (Musical Collaboration); Róisín White gets the award for Amhránaí (Singer); and the Irish Traditional Music Archive gets Gradam Comaoine TG4 (Special Contribution). An ensemble of other legendary musicians is set to take the stage on the night, including Cathal Hayden, Jimmy Higgins and Brendan O’Regan, who will join Máirtín, along with Donal Lunny and Zoe Conway. “I am delighted for Bobby,” enthuses Máirtín. “I’ve always loved his playing, so it will be nice to have a few tunes with him. And also of course, Mai-

“We were probably the first generation of musicians that travelled around the world playing music because it was possible to do so.” tiú, Róisín, and Ensemble Ériú and the great Nicholas Carolan of the Irish Traditional Music Archive.” He adds the decision to broadcast the concert live on TG4 for the very first time will add an “edginess” to the occa-
sion. “It will be challenging for the technical people and the musicians. It will make it interesting…anything could happen,” he laughs. Indeed, according to Máirtín, the guideline “expect the unexpected” is always adhered to once he is in Cork. “I have a nice association with Cork,” he reveals. “I played music down there from the late 70s through the 80s with gigs in the Lobby Bar, and I have great memories of The Phoenix. I have a great friend down there, Colm Murphy, a bodhrán player who played on my first record in 1978, The Connaughtman’s Rambles. We did a lot of touring together just as a duo, with the box and bodhrán. “The first time I was in Cork, and looking for his house, I had to drive up Patrick’s Hill in a 1968 grey Mini Minor and it couldn’t make the top of the hill. I had to reverse down…I was in a cold sweat. I parked it up and left it in gear, but there was a lot of creaking, and I was afraid the whole thing would go down the hill!”
Máirtín adds with a laugh that on another occasion, in The Phoenix, he entered into a packed bar to meet Murphy, who asked him “how does Miss McLeod’s Reel go?’. “I started lilting it, and Colm said it’s ‘too noisy, a bit louder’ so I did, and at that moment, everyone hopped up on the bar stools and started dancing. They were leaping around the place! Colm had the whole thing set up of course, just complete madness! I do love Cork, it’s a fantastic city.” Tickets for the concert are €25, available from corkoperahouse.ie or 021 4270022. The show can also be watched live on TG4 at 9.30pm. Along with the concert, a Trad Music Trail will take place throughout the city over the weekend, with a full list of times and locations at gradam.ie. A free photography exhibition entitled Nádúr An Cheoil - Máistrí Ghradam Cheoil TG4, by local photographer Clare Keogh, will take place at City Hall and runs until Friday, March 13th.

Deep into Burroughs Making Resolutions The Triskel will give Cork cinemaphiles a rare opportunity to see the seminal experimental films of iconic literary outlaw William Burroughs later this month. One of the defining figures of contemporary culture, Burroughs revolutionised late 20th century perception through both the form and content of his writings. The cut–up method — cutting into and rearranging texts through chance — was introduced by
artist Brion Gysin but is most widely associated with its use in Burroughs’ novels. He also explored these ideas in cinema through his collaborations with filmmaker Antony Balch. In Phantoscope, Triskel’s regular experimental film event, audiences will have a rare opportunity to see these films on the big screen. The programme includes the two seminal cut–up classics Towers Open Fire (1963) and The Cut-Ups (1966) and
Ghosts at Number 9 (1982), an elaborate re–edit of these films along with other footage found after Balch’s death; the performance–to–camera Tony and Bill (1972); and the home movie William Buys a Parrot (1963). Benjmain J Heal, a Burroughs scholar and board member of the European Beat Studies Network, will also speak at the event on Wednesday, February 25th. Doors are at 8.45pm and admission is €9.30.
CORK ARTS THEATRE
Cork band Slow Motion Heroes are to release the first single from their debut album at the end of February. The song, Resolution — out on Friday, February 27th — melds the group’s trademark ingredients into

afraid to let their songs take them on tangential journeys, Resolution manages to combine all of these elements into a stunning mission statement. The band’s album is due out in spring on FIFA Records.

Having the ability to channel the past into the present day while remaining contemporary and relevant is no mean feat. Waze & Odyssey have not only managed to tick both of those accomplishments off their bucket list, but they have also notched up a seriously impressive list of accolades in the short time they’ve been together. Catch them at the Savoy tonight, with doors at 10.30pm and tickets €17.65 from ticketmaster.ie.
A trio of talent is at The Comedy Club in City Limits as Edwin Sammon, Ross Browne, and Christiane O’Mahony hit the stage. Sammon is a regular performer on RTÉ’s Republic of Telly, while O’Mahony has toured with Des Bishop and been a guest on The Chris Evans BBC radio show. Cork’s own comedy star Ross Browne is the star of RTÉ’s The Fear — playing the characters of Jimmy, Bad Bouncer, Sergeant Major and Dolf. Doors are at 8.30pm and admission is €15.

Northern Irish poet Nick Laird and prize–winning English novelist Zadie Smith will take the stage together in UCC’s 2015 series of readings at 6pm at Boole 4 theatre. Tyrone–born Laird has published three collections of poetry – To a Fault, On Purpose and Go Giants — while Smith is the author of four novels, including White Teeth, NW and On Beauty, which won the 2006 Orange Prize and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Award. Cluck cluck! The exhibition Feathered Friends by Diana Kingston is at the Triskel Christchurch. In this new body of work, Kingston reflects on her formative years growing up on a farm in west Cork. In this world, birds — like the hens and the cockerel — form a backdrop and chorus to her daily routines. It’s open from 10am to 4pm.
Country music star Nathan Carter returns to the Opera House stage this evening. His fifth and current album Where I Wanna Be reached the coveted number 1 position in the Irish charts and he continues to sell out venues across Ireland. Doors for his Leeside gig are at 8pm and admission is €26 corkoperahouse.ie.

If Fifty Shades of Grey is not really your cup of tea, then consider Some Like It Hot, showing at the Triskel. Part of the venue’s Valentine’s Weekend, one of the greatest of all film comedies will be screened at 1pm (€6.50) and 6pm (€9.30). The classic sees Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon fleeing mobsters by disguising themselves as Josephine and Daphne, two members of an all–girl jazz band. For tickets see triskelartscentre.ie.

It’s opening night for Portia Coughlan, a play based on the dark story of a woman’s struggle with the death of her twin brother. A heart wrenching performance, it’s running at the Cork Arts Theatre, with doors at 8pm and tickets €10 from corkartstheatre.com.
