Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa celebrates 25 years of musical success

Editor’s letter There’s been more ruckus at the Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre, but in contrast to last year, when residents staged a protest, this week it was the turn of staff. Allegations have been made of threatening behaviour against staff by the centre’s residents, and as odious as that may be, some of the responses from the people of Cork concerning the centre’s population have been just as bad.

A tiny, tiny minority of Cork people are content to make racial slurs about the men, women and children who live at the centre. Hopefully, nobody is listening to that sort of ignorant nonsense. A few more people, though, are under misapprehensions about what exactly passes for “a day in the life” of the people there, or the conditions they’re living in. I’d like to dispel some of the stories about life at the Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre, because unlike most of you, I’ve been there. I’ve seen it.

Take it from me: it’s very, very far from being a holiday camp.

Late last year, when the resident staged their protests, I spent a few hours being shown around the living quarters there. It was harrowing. I wrote a long, long piece about it but as it happens it was never published, because before we went to print that week the dispute was resolved. Here are a few of the highlights: “It is, and I write this without hyperbole, one of the worst places I have ever seen in Ireland…Counted, herded, regulated and controlled, the people here live their lives with no freedom, no self determination, no privacy, no hint of normality. They are afforded no dignity, indeed they are denigrated, but yet they remain dignified. I don’t think I would have the fortitude.

They will show me the tiny, garishly-lit bedrooms and the long lists of rules and regulations. They will tell me a little about their lives before they fled Africa in the hopes of something more. They will show me the disgusting, stark, bare, dirty room where a tiny fridge and a dented microwave are set aside for the communal use of 24 people.

I’m struck by the grim, angular horror of the rooms. Hard lino, straight edges, low ceilings and the unrelenting white blast of flourescent lights. Three single beds almost atop one another. Small plywood lockers for clothes, a little extra space under and around the beds for whatever the inmates accrue over the course of their long years here. Small, cramped and chaotic.

The long, shiny corridors are full of doors to rooms like these.”

I could (and did) go on, and I’m glad to report that as you can read in our pages, conditions for the inmates have improved measurably since then. But please, don’t believe anyone who tells you that it’s a laugh riot in the lap of luxury from one end of the day to the next. I couldn’t stomach more than a few hours in that place, and some of the residents have been there for more than seven years.

CIT merger may prompt national strike continued from page 1 of other institutes of technology across the country could now be balloted over the merger. TUI branches in CIT and ITT are currently balloting members on industrial action — ranging in severity from simple non–cooperation right up to full–fledged strike action — relating to the proposal to merge the two institutes, the result of which will be known next week. Mr Kenny added that a one–day petition opposing the merger was also signed by over 50% of their members at CIT this week, which was handed to the governing bodies, while a formal dispute has also been lodged with the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) in relation to the proposed merger process.

Mr Kenny told The Cork News the concerns of TUI members — academic and research staff — across both institutes are two–fold, that the “rationalisation agenda will not serve the best interests” of

the regions, along with concern over what’s being perceived as a “forced merger”.

He added that the TUI will be meeting with the HEA and “will be seeking additional funding”, saying it’s “the merger that’s the issue” and not the “notion” of a Technical University. “Our problem lies with the forced merger and that’s where it’s always been,” said Mr Kenny, adding that if an institute wants to apply for TU status it should be allowed to do so without having to merge with another institute. The union is calling on Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan to remove the requirement from the draft legislation on technological universities to merge first before applying for university status.

Mr Kenny added: “We are engaged with our members, who are engaging with politicians and local representatives.”

In a joint statement, CIT and ITT acknowledged that considering the “nature and scale of the proposal” to es-

tablish the MTU, it is “inevitable” that there are “some concerns” from staff. “To help address these concerns we pledge that thorough and inclusive consultation will continue to take place throughout the merger process,” it read. “Furthermore we would like to reassure our staff that the MTU will continue to honour nationally negotiated contracts and national agreements with respect to the terms and conditions of staff.”

The institutes stated that the achievement of TU designation “promises a broad range of benefits and opportunities” for students, staff and other stakeholders. “Our students will be able to avail of enhanced study options and our staff will be provided with career and professional development opportunities,” they said, adding that 12,323 students attend the two institutes which also employ 1,282 staff and currently contribute an estimated €200m to the region. The statement added the Economic Impact Study, carried out as part of

the MTU submission, predicts that these figures will increase and conservatively estimates that the MTU will result in an additional annual contribution of €58m to the regional economy.

“The success of our two institutions has been achieved due to the talent, commitment and hard work of our employees, both past and present. It is through their efforts over many years that we are now in a position to seek Technological University designation,” read the statement, before going on to say that “The governing bodies of CIT and ITT are very confident that we will meet the criteria and achieve TU designation. Both institutes remain fully committed to the national process of higher education reform, in partnership with the HEA, the Department of Education and Skills and our internal and external stakeholders. We will continue to engage meaningfully with all our stakeholders and work together with them towards this goal.”

Call for empathy after KRAC worker protests The Cork–based Irish Immigrant Support Centre (NASC) has called for empathy with residents of the Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre (KRAC), where this week staff protested working conditions.

Jennifer DeWan, NASC, noted the potential for living conditions at the centre to exacerbate tensions there: “It’s a volatile situation between staff and residents. It’s a fraught environment, as any direct provision centre in the country can be.

“Institutionalised living for long periods, with no idea how long it will last, isn’t suitable for anyone.

“It only serves to create tensions that wouldn’t otherwise be there,” she said.

A representative of the workers at KRAC has criticised their employer’s handling of the dispute. Wednesday’s walkout was caused by working conditions “bordering on social unrest,” according to information relayed to Gerry Browne, SIPTU. “They feel that they’re being intimidated in their place of work. If a fraction of what I hear is true, it is unacceptable,” he told The Cork News.

The direct provision centre is operated by Aramark Ireland, a catering company which runs three centres around the country.

“I understand that it’s not a nice place to live, the staff however are not responsible for that,” said Mr Browne.

Following Wednesday’s walkout strike, their case has

been referred to the Labour Relations Committee, and has prompted a “troubling” reaction on social media: “Some of the comments on social media have been absolutely horrific,” said Jennifer DeWan. “I’m seeing things like ‘Stuff them in a crate and ship them back.’”

“These aren’t people looking

to ‘scam the system;’ these are people fleeing for their lives.

“We as a country have a legal and moral obligation to provide for those fleeing persecution and conflict,” she continued; “it’s hard to see this lack of empathy.”

Calling on those offended by racist comments on social media to send their concerns

to reportracism@nascireland.org, Ms DeWan asked Irish people to avoid blaming migrants for the country’s troubles: “Our dysfunctional asylum process has become another symbol of a government gone wrong. Pitting one group of suffering people against another however, is not the an-

swer,” she said.

Those housed at KRAC are provided with room and board and some additional services, including a Sky Sports package and recreation room.

“I can obviously accept that many Irish people are really struggling to make ends meet.

“Having a Sky Sports package provided for you in no way compares to having your own house, own kitchen, and the ability to provide for your children,” Jennifer concluded.

Residents at the centre undertook a well–publicised ‘lock out’ protest at the centre last Autumn to highlight their stark living conditions. When contacted by The Cork News, resident Lucky Khambule noted a “number of satisfactory changes” since then “The general living conditions are gradually improving,” he said, referring to management’s decision to begin housing residents two to a room, rather than three.

When contacted, the centre’s operators, Aramark Ireland, stated that all employees have returned to work, and declined to comment further.

‘Cork University Hospital saved her life’ A Cork toddler who was born with a rare — if not unique — form of diabetes is “thriving” thanks to the team at Cork University Hospital, according to her mother.

Ava Joyce from Douglas was diagnosed with permanent neonatal diabetes at birth in August 2013.

Although well recognised and increasingly researched worldwide, the genetic cause for the condition has never been determined.

Following treatment from a team of doctors, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, biochemists and social workers at CUH however, Ava is growing and developing as she should for her age.

“The entire team treating Ava made huge efforts with her care, and portering and housekeeping staff would ask about her on a daily basis,” said Ava’s mother, Maeve.

“CUH saved her life,” she

Ava tested positive for diabetes four days after her birth, and Dr Susan O’Connell, CUH, recognised the condition as a rare, genetic form.

Test results confirmed a

form of diabetes which had never before been diagnosed, making it impossible to predict how Ava would respond to treatment.

Having trialled different diabetic medications and a diabetic insulin pump in an attempt to wean Ava off insulin for the best part of a year, CUH staff found the winning formulation in May 2014.

With her condition under control, Ava was discharged from hospital permanently two months later, and has not been admitted since.

“Due to recent improvements in paediatric diabetes services at Cork University Hospital, we successfully treated Ava, despite her having an extremely rare and challenging condition.

“Fortunately we were in a position to provide all her treatment in Cork so she didn’t have to travel elsewhere,” says Dr. O’Connell.

Serious assault in Douglas, witnesses sought Gardaí in Douglas are investigating a serious assault which occurred last Sunday morning, February 22nd between the hours of 1.30am and 1.50am.

A 23–year–old man was assaulted in the laneway between the areas of Grange Road and Grange Heights.

He was taken to the Cork University Hospital with serious injuries. Major EU funding agreed for Cork area The expansion of high–speed broadband services in the Southern and Eastern regions of Ireland, targeting 164,300 households, is among the priorities of a €498.2m EU funding programme.

The programme — the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) — was signed in Brussels

by Cork County Councillor Kevin O’Keefe of the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly, and is expected to create 17,000 new jobs in small companies by targeting specific sectors including digital, food, and energy. It will also improve commercialisation for Irish small and

medium enterprises.

It is hoped the funding programme will improve energy efficiency in southern and eastern houses, leading to warmer homes, cheaper energy bills and reduced CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, it is expected the programme will revitalise urban areas and encourage an increase in public transport for urban journeys.

Cllr O’Keefe, who was joined by Minister Brendan Howlin TD in Brussels, welcomed the signing of the agreement: “‘The signing of this operational programme allows my region to continue to invest heavily in research

and development and innovation, including next–generation broadband rollout,’’ he said.

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crescu, speaking at the signing, spoke of the need to encourage the establishment of small businesses: “We need to empower citizens with the skills and knowledge they need to set up small companies.

“We need to facilitate the access of these businesses to financial support, and most importantly, we need to enable them to create jobs. “Today’s investment programmes set all Irish regions on this path,” he said.

Cork firefighters recognised for ‘heroic’ rescue of horse Cork firefighters who last week rescued a trapped horse from a muddy river have been honoured for their “heroic compassion.”

Firefighters from the Bally-

volane Amber Unit were presented with ARAN’s “Compassionate Fire Brigade Award” on Tuesday, considered a first for an emergency service in Ireland.

“The heroic compassion and swift on–the–ball action shown by members of the Ballyvolane Amber Unit is nothing short of inspiring,” said ARAN’s John Car-

mody.

Mr. Carmody hopes the firefighter’s actions will “be emulated across the country for other animals in troubling situations.”

The group received framed certificates from ARAN, and were further honoured with the news that the horse has been named Gerry, after one of his rescuers.

To commemorate the sinking of the Lusitania off the Cork coast a century ago, Cork’s Rising Sons brewery has collaborated with the US–based Beara Brewing Company, creating a new beer to honour the survivors of the disaster.

“Survivor” will be launched next week at the brewery in Cork City Centre, presided over by Declan Keegan, grandson of Lusitania survivor May Barrett. As he pulls the first pint in Ireland, Rising Sons owners Cliona and Benny McCabe will symbolically pull another pint of pale ale in New Hampshire on the other side of the Atlantic, to mark the other end of Lusitania’s doomed voyage.

The sinking of the Lusitania was one of the prime factors in drawing the USA into World War I. May Barrett had been on the ship returning from New York to see her family and was rescued by ‘Joe’, a mysterious stranger who saved her life and for whom she searched for decades, to no avail.

Each employee is hired to represent their employer as best they can and in situations where day–to–day business requires the company to engage with the outside world, either in a tender process or through customer relations, the employees are accountable to the company.

A business operates under the same competitive advantage dynamics as everything else and if an overweight employee has the capacity to damage a company’s image, they are a lot less likely to be hired in the first place.

Then there’s the sweeping generalisations that often come with a persons appearance. If a man walks into an interview in a nice suit, with his shoes polished, and a hint of aftershave, the assumption from the employer is that this is a well-groomed individual who takes pride

ow many people reading this article would give a fat person a job? Let me break it down further; how many among you would choose an obese candidate to fill a position over two “normal”-sized alternatives?

This topic came up for debate at a dinner party recently and the argument got quite heated. Among the five other guests in attendance, just one insisted that a person’s weight had no bearing whatsoever on their suitability to fill the vacancy in question.

The others vehemently disagreed and questioned whether the defence of the overweight job seeker was a truthful and honest assessment, or rather, was it a politically correct stance just for the sake of it.

It’s an interesting subject.

If three candidates walk in for an interview for the same position and two are of normal weight while the third is obviously obese, which is less likely to get the job?

Human Resource experts will throw out the party line that all candidates are treated the same and that equal opportunity applies to each, but I’m not so sure this holds up under scrutiny.

If appearance has no bearing on the result of an interview and if a persons looks do not come into play, why would anyone bother putting on make–up or a smart suit?

Why groom oneself for a big interview if looks play no part in the overall package?

In a situation where all three candidates for a job are well presented and “appropriately proportioned,” looks probably won’t be a deciding or influencing factor. But if one candidate is 24 stone and has difficulty walking, regardless of whether the job in question requires mobility of any sort, their appearance will almost certainly count against them.

Whether or not you agree with such generalisations is irrelevant. These types of assumptions are happening every single day and anyone who suggests otherwise is lying. Snap judgements are just part and parcel of everyday life.

Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we get it hopelessly wrong. But the human eye is trained to absorb as much information as possible in whatever time it has available; the brain reacts accordingly.

Ignoring gut instinct goes against the very fabric of our make up.

In a utopian society we would all get a level playing field to plead our case. But unfortunately life doesn’t work like that. Sometimes a window of opportunity is only open for a few tiny seconds. If a bad impression comes across, the opportunity can close just as quickly.

Sometimes we might be lucky enough to get the time to override a bad first impression, but more often than not, our first interaction will define us. In an increasingly artificial society, where looks play such a vital role in determining our success or failure, first impressions definitely count.

Bus Éireann have deferred plans to reduce its Cork services in mid June, following the completion of a report by a National Transport Authority (NTA) working group.

Cork housing market continues to recover, claims new report Although the average price of a residence in Cork sits below the national average, the county’s housing market continues to show signs of recovery, according to a recently– published report.

The average price for a residence in Cork in 2014 was €182,792 — the fifth–highest in the country — while the national average was €213,947.

Cork’s figure — considered on–par with the three preceeding years — sees the county placed behind Dublin, Wicklow, Meath and Kildare in the national standings.

“You can see that the Cork market is performing reasonably well.”

“When you consider the lowest county average is Longford at €74,154, you can see that the Cork market is performing reasonably well…the Cork housing market would appear to be healthy,” said Dara Keogh, GeoDirectory CEO. The report further found that Cork accounts for 12 percent of the 3,731 buildings currently under construction in the country, a national high, beating out Dublin and Donegal at 11.8 percent.

Land for protected species questioned Fine Gael TD for Cork North West Áine Collins has questioned the constitutionality of the failure to compensate farmers affected by the designation of land for the protection of the hen harrier.

Currently, 80,000 hecares of Irish land is designated, affecting 3,054 farmers who are limited in their capacity to farm their land, according to Ms Collins.

Ms Collins, speaking in Dáil Éireann last week, said that these farmers are not permited to build build wind farms or develop forestry, and as a con-

sequence some feel their land is of no value.

Of the farmers affected, approximately 400 have received compensation, while the remainder — including farmers in Rockchapel, Newmarket and Ballydesmond — have not been compensated.

During the Dáil debate, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys confirmed that a farmer with lands designated as a special protection area for the hen harrier will be appointed to a consultative committee on the issue, which is set to convene

soon. The hen harrier, a medium–sized raptor with long wings and tail, is considered one of Europe’s rarest birds of prey and is heavily protected under Irish and European law.

The number of breeding hen harrier pairs has been in decline since the 1970s, leading to the species being ‘amberlisted’ at European level, the second–most critical rating on a scale which describes the viability of a species, from those of least concern to endangered and extinct lineages.

Campaign to get little Kate home

A campaign is mounting to help a little Cobh girl, who has lived in hospital all her life, rejoin her family at home.

Twenty–month–old Kate Flynn, who has a tracheostomy and requires a ventilator to help her breathe at night, is currently at Cork University Hospital but has been approved for a home care package. It’s anticipated that Kate, who has never slept a night in her own home, could be back with her family — mother Lisa, father Mark and brothers Adam (6) and Alex (4) — in Cobh by April or May. Lisa told The Cork News the search is now on for nurses to help look after their daughter.

“For us to take Kate home, we need nursing support. We actually wouldn’t be allowed to take her out overnight, because Kate needs 24–hour constant supervision. We are fully trained in Kate’s care, both Mark and I, but one of us needs to work, and one of us needs to care for Kate but one person can’t stay up 24

“It’s devastating for us really that she is not home already.”

Since Kate was born, Lisa has not been able to work.

Kate is currently at Cork University Hospital, but previously she had been at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, which Lisa revealed “ate up any savings” the family may have had with accommodation and travelling expenses.

However, the Flynns have managed some quality time with Kate in recent weeks, with the youngster spending three days at home in Cobh, and one day with her grandparents in Clonakilty.

Kate’s brothers are “devoted to her”, says Lisa: “Every night when I come home

after spending the day with Kate, they are asking about her, and before I go in the morning, they say to me ‘tell Kate I love her’ or ‘give her a kiss from me’. She used the standing machine the other day and they were so proud of her. It’s devastating for us really that she is not home already.

“Hopefully now as Kate is so much stronger, she’ll get home. She’s not going to grow out of her breathing condition, as it is life long. We have come to terms with that and we want Kate home as we feel we could care for her better there. In the evenings I have to go home to the boys, and it’s hard work going out the door and leaving Kate behind. I really would love to give her a summer where she would be out in her buggy, watching the boys playing around, or be out in the back on the swing. Her birthday is June 19th and ideally we would love her home then…I’d be devastated if she was still in hospital.”

UCC recognised as a ‘Health Promoting University’ University College Cork is to become the first third level institution in the country to be formally recognised as a “Health Promoting University,” the HSE has confirmed.

The accolade is the result of several years’ work under the umbrella of the UCC Health Matters initiative, which included the provision of alcohol–free campus accommodation.

Mercy University Hospital hit by winter vomiting bug Patients with flu–like symptoms have been advised to visit their GP rather than to present at Cork’s Mercy University Hospital, following another outbreak of the winter vomiting bug there.

The announcement follows the introduction of visiting restrictions due to an increase in influenza cases at the hospital last week.

The restrictions — introduced in an effort to safeguard patients during a four–year high of cases of the winter vomiting bug — will be reviewed regularly.

The Outpatient Department, children’s ward, critical care areas and the Mercy Urgent Care Centre are unaffected by the restrictions.

CBC students and teachers in Zambia

Christians calling on contestants for €1000 charity game show Christian Brothers College Cork are offering the chance to win €1000 as part of their fundraising drive for their Total Immersion Zambia Project.

Revenue seizes illegal cigarettes Revenue has seized 44,500 illegal cigarettes and tobacco in Cork. In an intelligence– led operation, officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized the Black Mount cigarettes and Flandria and Golden Virginia tobacco on Wednesday, February 25th.

It had an estimated retail value of approximately €26,100.

The operation, assisted by tobacco–sniffer dog Harvey, involved two searches of premises on the north side of Cork city and one search of premises in east Cork. Two Irish males in their 50s and one female in her 20s were interviewed and files are being prepared with a view to prosecution.

Alliance will tackle inequality in Cork The Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission has launched the Cork Equality and Sustainable Communities Alliance’s (CESCA) new community leadership training initiative.

CESCA is a coalition of community and voluntary groups in Cork who have joined forces to address the issue of disadvantage in the city.

The alliance comprises 14 diverse groups in Cork who share the common goals of social inclusion and social justice, working together as part

of this new partnership.

Speaking at the launch, Commissioner Emily Logan said she hopes the alliance will encourage equality in the city: “I am delighted to support this new alliance in Cork city which will enhance social inclusion services in the city and which supports social justice and equality.”

The community leadership training initiative aims to help both new and experienced volunteers and staff to understand the principles underpinning equality, social

inclusion and social justice.

The initiative is aimed at people involved in community and voluntary environments, whether as volunteers, committee members or project staff.

Open to people of all experience levels and educational backgrounds, the training provided is funded by the HSE South Social Inclusion Service and will be free of charge.

“This innovative initiative highlights the strength of the community and voluntary sector in Cork city and the

important role that this sector has to play in promoting health and social gain across all communities,” said Ger Reaney, HSE at the launch.

Dave Roche, Cork Gay Project member and CESCA spokesperson hopes the alliance will prove stronger than the sum of its parts: “By pooling our resources and sharing expertise and ideas we can be more effective and extend our reach,” he said.

Snacktacular cash boost for Cork company Bishopstown–based ‘healthier for you’ food company Veronica’s Snacks is starting Spring with a bang, having secured almost half a million euro in funding to develop its gluten–free snack brands.

The company, set up in 2012, now employes three people and makes and distributes lower fat, gluten-free crisps under the ‘Veronica’s’ and ‘Crunchy Creatures’ brands.

Now, a €465,000 equity investment from AIB, Enterprise Ireland, the Boole Investment Syndicate and

Brian McCann will allow the company to break into new markets and continue product developement, expanding their range.

Daytripper The Voice UK contestant and sixth year student at Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane Claudia Rose Long (17) lives in Pouladuff with her parents Rosarie and Gerard.

“

My mum wakes me at 7.30am, and then I go back to sleep for 15 minutes, until she wakes me again and asks what I want for breakfast! I’m babied! Normally, I’ve porridge with strawberries or toast and a boiled egg. Then it’s onto school at Presentation Secondary, with nine classes a day, and choir during lunch. I love business, and maths, but have fallen behind… Maths is a class that you need to be there everyday for.

It’s been hard missing so much because of the auditions for The Voice UK but my teachers are great and my principal said to me: ‘Claudia, this is your moment’, and that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

And it is a fantastic opportunity. You’ve to be 18 to audition for The Voice of Ireland, but just 16 for the UK, so I thought, ‘as I’m young, why don’t I travel and take the risk.’ I went for the first audition and was on our family holiday in America, lounging by the pool, when my dad got a phone call inviting me to the call–back auditions. I had to pick nine songs from a pre– selected list beforehand, and one that I picked, Jennifer Hudson’s Love You I Do, they thought may be too grown up and asked me would I sing one of Rita Ora’s songs instead. That was that until a week before the blind auditions and they asked me to sing Love You I Do after all!

I got to rehearse in front of the chairs beforehand, and my vocal coach said she wanted me scared for those times, almost crying with nerves, so I wouldn’t be so bad for my blind audition. I was still nervous though on the day, walking out to silence, as the crowd can’t make a noise. A ‘woo’ or a clap would have helped! I did overhear someone say: ‘Awww she’s so cute’, which didn’t help as I was about to sing this big woman song!

However, as soon as the music started, I relaxed. There are three big parts to the song, and no one turned for the first part but I could see Rita’s hands going, and then Ricky (Wilson) turned… And I gave him a wink! So embarrassing! Tom Jones turned, who I’m obsessed with, and I got a standing ovation! I did almost go for Ricky as my mentor but said I’d go with my gut and Tom it was.

He’s lovely. We were out the other night, and when he walked in, I had this whole ‘wow, it’s Tom Jones’ moment. I said to him: ‘You’ve curly hair like me Tom’. He said ‘I do’. I was so nervous, I popped an olive into my mouth, which I’ve never eaten before but thought it can’t be that bad. It was. I didn’t know what to do with it, and Rosa, my friend over there, was keeling over with the laughter.

I’m actually battling Rosa this weekend. That’s really hard, having to battle one of my closest friends. We’ve said that if I go home, and she stays, she’ll represent me; and if I stay and she goes home, I’ll represent her. It’s the two ‘babies’ battling, as Rosa is just 16, and while battles can

be uncomfortable to watch because the singers are trying to show off, Tom said he didn’t want us to ‘battle’ but for it to be a duet. So we’re singing Halo by Beyoncé, but not her version; an acoustic one instead.

Being on stage has always been a passion of mine. When I was four, our school put on The Little Red Hen and I got the part of the mother.

Another girl was the Red Hen but didn’t learn her lines so I was given the role instead.

I was ready and knew every word… My calling at four!

A year later, at my cousin’s wedding, I went up to the band and asked could I sing a song, River Deep – Mountain High! I sang the whole thing, with all the hand and dance movements down. I knew even then performing was

what I wanted to do.

I started in the Montforts at five and at 10, went to the Cork Arts Studio. I’m still there, and go dancing at 6pm, four times a week. Then I go home and try and do my homework. The dream is to go to London, and study somewhere like the Urdang Academy. Then go onto America - New York or LA. Part of me wants to go to Broadway and

part of me wants to make an album and get it out there. I want to do it all, not just one thing. My role model is Beyoncé. She’s not just a singer or a dancer, she’s everything.

I’ve five of her DVDs at home and every word, dance, and facial movement I know. I’m obsessed.

I’m also going to grinds at Hewitt, and had to give up the violin this year. I’ve been practising since I was seven but I had to think what was the most important thing to fit in this year and musical theatre is the most important.

I try and meet friends before dance class on Friday, which starts at 8pm, or at weekends.

This might sound strange but we just like driving around.

Well, my friend can drive, I can’t yet! We never actually go anywhere, just get lost, but it’s fun and time to catch up. My best friend does the same class as me, so that’s our hangout time.

My friends are great and I thought they’d be annoyed I didn’t tell them about the auditions, but when they found out, they were so excited. You swear they were on the show!

They were trying to predict who’d turn for me, and all of them love Tom Jones.

So when they Ricky turned, they went ‘woo’, but when Tom turned, my 17–year–old friends erupted!

The audition has been the best thing ever to happen to me, and hopefully there’s more to come. Even if I was to get no further in the competition, I’ve opened doors now.

I just want to grow and grow. I auditioned for The X Factor last year and Simon Cowell didn’t like me. He said I was ‘sweet sixteen’ and he ‘didn’t want that’. I don’t want to sound cocky, but I’m more than that and I vowed to myself then I was going to make it happen... And then The Voice came up. To hear Tom Jones, who has the voice he has, say I’m a ‘powerhouse’ is unbelievable.

New pastoral care centre for Christ King school A new pastoral care centre is to be opened at Christ King.

The new centre at the South Douglas Road secondary school will be called Sunview, the name of the suburban house where Christ King was founded 50 years ago. The centre, to be officially opened on Monday, March 2nd, by Sr Sheila Kelleher, provincial leader of the Presentation Sisters, will house the school’s seedling programme, which has been running in the school for a number of years providing solace for loss or bereavement. It will also house an art therapy room, a communal meeting room and it is planned to incorporate a communal garden.

by Cork TD, begins work on migrant law overhaul An Oireachtas Committee chaired by Cork East TD David Stanton is expected to begin work on overhauling Ireland’s treatment of undocumented migrants.

The committee this week heard proposals from the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) that could result in a €180 million boost to the national exchequer, comprising taxes and registration fees for the scheme.

Under MRCI’s proposals those who have been in the country for more than four years — three for those here with children — would be facilitated in registering with a State authority.

This would allow those who have registered to travel to their home countries without fear of being refused re-entry into Ireland.

“These are hard–working people who live with the fear of deportation.”

The committee heard of the personal hardships of the approximately 26,000 undocumented people in Ireland: “The meeting was attended

by an undocumented man from the Philippines, who hadn’t been able to travel home in five years.

time, and he misses his son.

That was quite moving,” said Mr Stanton (above).

“These are hard-working people who live with the fear

of deportation and who are, because of their legal status, susceptible to exploitation,” added the Fine Gael TD. After a certain period of time, migrants registered under this scheme would be eligible to apply for a working visa, expected to be worth €180 million in taxes over a five year period.

A number of restrictions would be imposed on those applying to the scheme — applicants with criminal records would be ruled out — and Belgium’s offer of a flat amnesty to undocumented migrants was criticised.

“We’re talking about a controlled, systematic overhaul,” said Mr Stanton, who expects the committee to write to Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald with recommendations shortly.

CIT student takes first at London healthcare technology awards A CIT student has this week taken first place at a major London healthcare technology awards show, beating off competitors from Oxford University and Imperial College London.

James Fogarty — a CIT Biomedical Engineering graduate from Waterford — was the sole Irish representative in the Best Medical Engineering Undergraduate Project category at the Healthcare Technologies Student and Early Career Awards.

His project, “The Design and Development of an Assistive Technology Music System for Sufferers of Cerebral Palsy”, deals with improving access to music making for cerebral palsy patients.

“I am absolutely over the moon with the award and it is a fantastic honour to receive,” said Mr Fogarty, speaking at the event in Westminster on Wednesday.

The project has previously ranked in the top ten percent of submissions to the Undergraduate Awards, a competition that attracted over 4,000

Cork study suggests 9–5 office day is dead More than seven in ten Irish professionals are regularly required to work outside office hours, research from Regus, a Cork–based business, has found.

The report — which canvassed the opinions of business people from across Ireland on their attitudes and approaches to work — found that 71 percent of workers feel they are required to do more after–hours work than five years ago.

With the global average standing at 66 percent, there have been calls for Irish businesses to adapt to changing work practices: “These findings clearly show that Irish working practices continue to evolve.

“The fact that so many workers are finding that ‘regular’ hours no longer suit their roles, should prompt companies to embrace flexible working practices,” said Karen Lawlor of Regus.

Nearly two thirds of workers (66 percent) say that fixed hours are no longer

suited to their duties, while 74 percent of respondents reported a rise in remote workers.

The figures suggest that the concept of 9–5 office day in Ireland is outdated, says the Cork agency.

New Baby? Cura Cork offers free support Being the parent of a new baby can be challenging, and may leave you feeling stressed, exhausted, and alone. Cura Cork is now offering free support and practical information to parents in Cork during their baby’s first year.

“There’s definitely a need out there for this kind of service,” Cura says. “You may be a couple dealing with stress from sleepless nights, a mother with a baby who won’t stop crying, or a father who isn’t allowed to see his baby. Maybe you just want to talk. We’re here to listen.”

Counsellors in Cura’s Cork centre provide information on rights and entitlements, as well as support and counselling.

The service is free of charge.

Cura also provides support for anyone dealing with a crisis or unplanned pregnancy, and counselling after an abortion.

All Cura services are free, confidential and non–judgemental, and are available to all.

Iron is critical to life. Without it to make haemoglobin we couldn’t transport oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues. It is also needed for energy production and metabolism.

There are certain groups who are at the highest risk

for iron deficiency, such as infants under two years of age, teenage girls, woman of childbearing age, pregnant women and the elderly.

The symptoms of iron deficiency may include pale skin, sore tongue, fatigue or listlessness, loss of appetite and nausea.

It’s also the most joyous and rewarding, but unless you’re lucky enough to be a stay–at–home Mum or Dad, you’ll need to organise your life with military precision.

First of all, how come a tiny baby needs so much STUFF? It takes a team of Sherpas just to get from point A to point B. And what’s with all the bodily fluids? You can forget wearing anything nice; they’ll secrete explosively on your clean shirt.

Sleep? Fuhgeddabout it.

You and the other person responsible for making the baby will end up in separate rooms, and soon you’ll forget how the act of procreation happens at all. Money? You’d think babies just need food, but wait ‘til you have one. You may as well paint a bullseye on your forehead saying ‘target market’. You will be

More and more emphasis is being placed on physical fitness these days as our lifestyles become increasingly sedentary. That’s not just true of mammies and daddies, either, or even teenagers; younger children in Cork are very much in need of increased physical activity.

It’s often said that “the family that plays together stays together”, and at Kinderama at

“We’re normally an activity programme for pre–school children and we go in to pre schools and creches and nurseries,” she says, “Anything can happen! There’s fun and lots of exerise, and plenty of dress-

ing up like fairies and wizards and pirates and mermaids!”

Classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9.30 at the moment, though demand is enough that Stef is already glad that the space and time exists for to expand if necessary.

of traffic, but with calm confident words he soon relaxes.

I feel that all of us make mistakes, or say the wrong thing, and how then can we judge others so harshly when we are not so perfect ourselves. There are times when something needs to be said and it would be a good idea to remember that the person we are complaining to may be having problems themselves. Politeness even when complaining is the key. And often it can be a good thing to tell a restaurant or

I do wonder with people who have to complain continually, if there some feelings of inadequacy or unhappiness, because to want to upset other people just for the sake of it, is not the sign of a contented person.

Cork Biz The sweet taste of success

any entrepreneurs, when setting their own company, are quick to say it is the culmination of a lifelong dream, but for Allison Roberts this truly is a reality. The Clonakilty–based Canadian has been working with chocolate since she was nine and set up her first business selling her products when she was twelve.

“At Christmas and Easter I used to send around a little book to my parents’ work and people would order things from that, and at school I set up a little canteen,” laughs

Roberts. “I’ve always been interested in crafts like crochet or working with stained glass and chocolate kind of fits into that, and I really enjoy cooking so I love being able to bring those two things together.”

Roberts now operates her business out of her home in west Cork after converting the back of her house into a chocolate factory, “I really couldn’t imagine doing this anywhere else but Clonakilty, it’s such a great town” says Roberts; “the people here are so encouraging and are really interested in how things are going for you, and they tell you they like what you’re doing.”

So what brought Roberts to west Cork in the first place?

“Well my husband and I initially travelled here from Australia, never intending to stay more than six months. We were staying in a friend’s cottage in Inchydoney when the recession hit, so we decided to do the Christmas markets with the chocolate, and we ended up staying and began to slowly grow the business” she says.

But there is quite a big difference between Clonakilty

Chocolate and the chocolate you’ll find on the shelf of your local shop. Roberts exclusively uses Fairtrade cocoa beans in her chocolate production and it’s a subject she’s very passionate about: “In November 2013 Clonakilty was named Fairtrade town of the year, and as I’m treasurer of the local Fairtrade group, I and our group’s secretary, travelled to Ghana to meet some of the farmers benefitting from the movement first hand.”

“We understand business people’s needs and treat them like you would family.”

But what exactly does Fairtrade mean? Beginning in the 1950’s, humanitarian groups established Alternative Trade Organisations (ATO’s) to help alleviate poverty in developing nations. They did this by cutting the middleman out of trade between small producers in the Northern Hemisphere and businesses in the Southern Hemisphere. This meant more direct profits for workers in developing nations, thus launching the Fairtrade Movement.

Cutting out the middleman, Roberts says, is “incredibly important: Fairtrade provides the farmer with a living wage. In places like West Africa, where so many governments are corrupt, it is very hard for small producers to link up with businesses like ours in the West and work together. There’s a lot of red tape.” continued on page 50

Mark Ryan of Quintas answers your finance questions in this special report: continued from page 49 Kuapa Kokoo is a cocoa– growing co-operative set up in 1993 by a number of leading cocoa farmers in Ghana, who recognised the opportunity to organise farmers and found a company to market their own cocoa. It guarantees the cocoa producer a specific price per kilo of beans; out on the open market there are no such guarantees. Farmers are at the mercy of greedy local buyers who often tamper with scales and cheat their neighbours out of a rightful price for their product. Kuapa Kokoo receives the Fairtrade Minimum Price or the auction price, if higher. It also receives the Fairtrade Premium of $200 US per tonne to invest in providing schools, clean sanitation and developing industries in local communities.

“It’s really empowering for the farmers, they are taking control of their own lives and investing their own money in the local community, which makes it very different from a charitable situation. They are making their own decisions and planning for their own future” says Roberts.

“The world isn’t perfect and of course it would be better if Fairtrade didn’t have to exist but it does, and I like to support the organisations that are opposing corruption.”

Such a high quality beans deserve to be incorporated into a top quality product, and

She’s working with ingredients she’s never used before and reinterpreting what chocolate is. Some of her new products include, ‘Milky Milk’ — goat’s milk with coconut sugar — ‘Decadent Dark’, which is 72% sweetened with Xylitol and Peruvian lucuma fruit; ‘Totally Minted’, also 72% sweetened with Xylitol and Peruvian lucuma fruit, ‘Hot Chilli’ — 75%, sweetened with Low-GI (diabetic friendly) coconut sugar — and ‘Wild West’ with a pinch of Irish salt and seaweed.

As the Irish palate is more attuned to the taste of milk chocolate, Roberts is utilising all her chocolate know how to create new and diverse flavours that will appeal

to the taste buds and go easy on the waistline. “The new range is gluten free and diabetic friendly but still 100% tasty and we are really proud to bring them to market” she says of the products, which will be officially launched in March during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Another passion for Alison is giving back to the local community which has embraced her wholeheartedly, through providing employment for local people: “I’m working from home so I can create flexible working hours for people. I’m trying to develop an interesting employment model alongside growing the business.”

Roberts took on her first employee in June last year and admits it was an interesting learning curve; she now has three employees working from her home chocolate fac-

tory and readily concedes that having the back up of other people and the support of the community allows her to be more creative with the chocolate. “I like the challenges involved in growing the business and this takes a bit of the pressure off ” she highlights.

Speaking of growing the business, the next few weeks are busy ones for Roberts and her team. As well as launching the new products, February 28th sees her open the doors to the chocolate factory where all are welcome to book in for a peek into the new garden workshop. She will also be hosting a special ‘Tasting and Tapas’ evening on March 5th in Molly’s Wine Bar in Clonakilty.

ankruptcy sees an insolvent person’s assets transfer to an Official Assignee (OA) to be sold for the benefit of those to whom the individual owes debt. The OA’s role is to dispose of assets and share the proceeds out fairly among their creditors, after which any outstanding debt remaining will be written off. In most cases this would involve the bankrupt person losing their family home.

Bankruptcy proceedings are brought in the High Court. The application for a Bankruptcy Order is filed in the Office of the High Court.

An individual cannot apply for bankruptcy without meeting with a Personal Insolvency Practitioner to ascertain whether they could resolve their debts through one of the new personal insolvency arrangements — Debt Settlement Arrangement or Personal Insolvency Arrangement. The total value of the individual’s debts must be in excess of €20,000 to apply for bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy normally lasts three years, and the bankrupt person will be under the supervision of office of the OA. There are restrictions during this period as regards access to credit, acting in certain roles and more. The OA also has the option of imposing an income payments order on the bankrupt for a period of five years.

The amount due to be paid under an income protection or-

der is based on the individual’s income less their reasonable living expenses, which the OA will deduct to cover family/household living expenses, mortgage/ rent, childcare and other expenses.

Bankruptcy means: • Your property transfers to the Official Assignee • You have a duty to contribute from surplus income (income less reasonable expenses) towards your debts for up to five years • You are discharged from bankruptcy after three years • All your debts are written off • In most cases you can continue in employment • You can continue to operate a bank account • You can travel outside the State once the OA’s office is informed • Notification of your bankruptcy will appear in Iris Oifigiúil or on the ISI website • Your name will remain on the list of bankruptcies Bankruptcy is the nuclear option for personal debt.

here are a few nasty bugs going around Cork at the moment, and some of them have been making themselves at home here at The Cork News, so naturally a recipe for chicken soup is timely! This soup is based on a rich, dark stock, and will help soothe those shivers and sniffles.

Ingredients Serves: 8 Dark Chicken Stock • 1 leek • Stems from ½ bunch parsley

• 6 sprigs thyme • 2 bay leaves • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 3lb chicken wings • 1 onion, unpeeled, quartered • 3 carrots, peeled • 2 celery stalks • 2 cloves of garlic • 1 tablespoon tomato puree • ½ teaspoon black peppercorns Assembly • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2½ pounds chicken thighs, with bones and skin removed • 8 oz carrots, peeled, sliced ½” thick

• 8 oz pearl onions, peeled, halved through the root • 8 oz egg noodles or pasta • Fresh chervil (French parsley) for garnish Method Trim dark green leaves from the leek; discard all but two of them. Slice the leek in half lengthwise and set it aside.

Tuck the parsley, thyme, and bay leaves inside the leek leaves and tie it closed with kitchen twine.

• Heat the oil in a large heavy pot over medium. Working in batches, cook the wings, turning often, until well browned

all over; this will take 15–20 minutes in total. Transfer them to a plate.

• Add the onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and reserved leek to the pot. Cook, turning occasionally, until browned, which will take 10–12 minutes.

• Add tomato and tomato puree and cook, stirring, until slightly darkened (roughly three minutes). Add ½ cup of water, making sure not to let browning stick to the bottom of the pot. You’ll need to keep scraping! Add the wings, the leek bundle, the peppercorns, and 12 cups water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat

and simmer, skimming the fat from the top occasionally, until your stock is deep amber and the chicken is falling off the bone. This will take up to two hours. Remove the chicken and vegetables and strain your stock into a clean large heavy pot.

• The next step is the assembly, where you bring it all together: Bring the stock to a simmer over medium–high heat and season well with salt and pepper. Add the thighs, cover, and simmer for about ten minutes until cooked through. Transfer the thighs to a plate and allow them to

cool slightly, then shred the meat and discard the bones.

• Add the carrots and onions to the pot; simmer for about five minutes until tender and add the thigh meat.

• Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a pot of boiling salted water until just al dente. Drain them and rinse under cold water, then add to your soup. Serve topped with chervil.

• This soup can be made two days ahead (or two months if frozen) as long as the noodles haven’t been added. Make sure it’s completely cooled before you transfer to airtight containers and chill or freeze.

What is gluten, and does it want to kill me?

Some people really do have problems — potentially very big problems — with gluten.

People with coeliac disease have to avoid it assiduously, and lot of people who suffer from IBS can have their symptoms worsened by it.

Gluten is a protein found in processed wheat, barley and rye flour, made of two smaller proteins squashed together. It’s the substance that gives dough its elasticity: without gluten it’s hard to get bread to rise well, and actions like throwing a pizza base are impossible. We’ve been eating it for thousands of years. The problem lately may be that intensive farming and selective breeding have amped up the amounts of gluten in cheaper, highly processed flours, leading some people to have a bad reaction to low–quality cereal products. They drop it from their diets completely — not entirely a bad idea, as we could all do with fewer processed carbs — but can subsequently lose their ability to process it well, mak-

ing the problem worse in the long run.

The first thing to do if you think you may have a gluten problem is to cut down, not cut out, cereals and cereal products. Next, fork out a little more for better qual-

ity products: they’re probably still cheaper than the gluten–free alternatives. If your problems persist, consider seering a doctor but bear in mind; when it comes to gluten you’re more than likely going to be just fine.

Loving Lisbon

hy not visit the capital?

Lisbon is a culturally rich, beautiful city encompassing everything one would want from a city break; fine restaurants, an abundance of culture to experience, beautiful scenery and great shopping. Spring is an ideal time to visit Lisbon, as the weather is more comfortable for sight– seeing than at the height of summer.

The city of Lisbon is slightly smaller than Dublin and most city centre areas can be

reached on foot or by using the public transport system, which is excellent and easy to navigate, consisting of trams, buses, metro and trains. If you do plan on walking in the city, be prepared for the hills that await you.

Built on seven hills, Lisbon is cobbled with stoned pavements and narrow streets full of Art Nouveau cafés. The downtown districts of Baixa and Rossio are the commercial areas where you will find the government ministries and the Praça do Comércio.

The traditional quarter of Bairro Alto has a labyrinth of streets for visitors to explore and is by far the most retro and unique area in the city.

Lisbon hosts a great number of remarkable art museums exhibiting ancient and modern art. These include the Carmo Archeological Museum, National Museum of

Belem is Lisbon’s most monumental and historical area. Lisbon is a city steeped in exploration history, and it was from Belem that many of the great Portuguese explorers such as Vasco de Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator embarked on their voyages of discovery. During this

time Lisbon flourished, with riches pouring into the country. This was the period which saw the construction of great monuments such as Monasterio des Jeronimos — a former monastery — and the Tower of Belem. Today these monuments are two of the city’s most popular attractions.

and design but also because it serves some of the best Pastis de Nata, Portugal’s native custard tarts, you can find. Make sure to get there early and get in line for these sumptuous treats as they often sell out before lunchtime on a busy day.

If you like the idea of getting out of the city for the day, the towns of Sintra and Cascais are well worth a visit.

village situated half an hour outside Lisbon. Once an attraction for spies, authors and exiled royals during World War II, today Estoril is less pretentious but still has a good selection of luxury hotels dotted along the seafront.

ord has given their best–selling Focus a mid–life makeover and it’s now on sale at Ford’s 55 dealers countrywide.

Ciaran McMahon, the new MD at Ford’s Irish headquarters on Boreenmanna Road, is confident that the arrival of the Focus and a few new models later this year will push the blue oval brand to the top of

the Irish car sales chart by the end of 2015.

Speaking at the Irish launch, Ciaran said: ‘‘At the end of 2014 Ford were third in the sales chart behind VW and Toyota. But with the introduction of the face–lifted Focus and new versions of the Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy later this year we are hopeful that the top three will be reversed in our favour by

December 2015. Also in the fourth quarter of the year Irish drivers will be able to purchase the exciting Mustang for the first time.”

With a price tag of over €50,000 the Mustang might be outside of many Irish drivers’ budget, but it’s an iconic car and it will be interesting just to see it. So Ford will rely on the popular Focus for volume sales and Ciaran says they

I drove the car in Spain a few months back, but with a left hand drive on unfamiliar roads, you don’t get a proper feel for it. So it was more relaxing last week as I got to appreciate on Irish roads the luxury that the revamped Focus now offers.

Externally the main change is to the front grille, which now looks very neat and is similar to the one used in the Fiesta.

There is also a new bonnet and front fascia. Overall it’s a bolder looking vehicle with a longer look and wider stance to it. Inside, the controls on the dash have changed slightly,

depending on the version you drive. It’s a really sturdy car to travel in. I drove a red diesel version with lots of extras and it was a real head turner.

Prices start at €20,695, but as with most new cars when you go into a garage to buy a new Focus you will find that there are various options, with Style, Zetec and Titanium all offering different extras.

I reckon the five–door Style with a 1.0 Eco Boost petrol engine will be the most popular at €22,345. Naturally it’s also available in 1.6 and 2.0–litre diesel.

T

he 2014 Mazda 6 SE Executive Saloon automatic waiting for me at O’Brien’s of Midleton has got to be the newest ‘used’ car I’ve ever driven for this review. It’s had one careful owner who didn’t get out much, as there’s less than 19 thousand miles on the clock.

Having won accolades from every quarter as one of the best family saloons on the market, today the Mazda 6 will be tested by my trusty posse of Post – Pregnancy Pilates Mums.

Why do they go to Pilates? I asked them. “Same reason a car requires periodic tinkering under the hood to keep everything at optimal level. We’ve just given birth, so…” ‘Nuff said.

arc to its line; the bonnet swoops pleasingly and a high tail end makes it look very dynamic. The yummy mummies give it several thumbs up.

The materials are plush; the ladies tell me they’re very comfy with plenty of legroom, and as the driver I must say the 2.2 handles beautifully. It’s light but strong, making the very most of 148hp and 420Nm of torque as we zip towards the Pilates studio – very relaxing at motorway speeds, and quiet enough to listen intently to back seat gossip.

Parents will be pleased with the five star NCAP safety rating — six airbags and smart braking are standard — and although the boot is a bit more shallow than the older model, it doesn’t make much of a discernible difference and you can always fold down the seats.

A whole new meaning to “car ads” As our cars become more and more tecnologically advanced, pairing up with everything from our tablets to our smartphones to GPS to WiFi or 4G, the next step in the evolution of the “integrated car” may be inevitable.

Eyeing a potential market of almost €40 billion by 2020, adaptive dashboards (think iPad with a speedometer) and cabin displays could soon feature one of the most irritating innovations of the 21st century: pop–up and personalised advertising.

A lot of newer high–end cars already integrate entertainment platforms, with Spotify for music, for instance, or

even Netflix and YouTube.

At the moment, a lot of drivers haven’t even heard of connected cars. That’ll change, with more than a quarter of new car buyers in the US indicating that they’d be willing to allow ads in their cars in order

to avail of free online services.

Manufacturers already working on connected cars include Ford, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda and others, while Apple, Google, Spotify and other Internet big players are developing car software.

C&S UCC Demons have been crowned Basketball Ireland Men’s Premier League Champions following a 122–81 win over UCD Marian.

Breaking the 100–point mark for the seventh time this season, the win stretches the Demons’ winning streak to 51 weeks and sees their unbeaten-season continue.

“It was another good win but the title was earned with the hard yards over the season.

“It was nice to take it with a bit of style at home,” said Player-Coach Colin O’Reilly.

The title makes it a league and cup double for the Cork side, having won the 2015 Men’s National trophy earlier this year.

“We’ve won four of the last five trophies so it’s good recognition for the work that goes on here.

“We’ll take a week off now and they’ll we’ll come together to realign our goals and focus on the Champion’s Trophy,” said O’Reilly.

Famed French actor, director and writer, Mathieu Amalric will open the Cork French Film Festival this weekend. He tells Play’s Maria Tracey about his love of west Cork, and of filming his latest film The Blue Room.

or acclaimed French star Mathieu Amalric, opening the 26th Cork French Film Festival is doubly joyful.

On one hand, the amiable actor and director outlines how “moved” he is that the festival’s director, Paul Bloom, is showing a selection of films from a variety of friends of his, while on the other hand, coming to Cork is also an opportunity for Amalric to return to a much loved part of the world that he visited 25 years ago. “I wanted to get lost somewhere,” he reveals about the time he spent near Bantry.

“I didn’t know I was going

to stay there, but the people grabbed me.”

Indeed, similar to the open and welcoming nature long associated with west Cork, Amalric is inviting too, with his alluring accent and laid– back demeanour. To quote the French phrase, there is a certain ‘joie de vivre’ about the man, with a ready joy for what he does. And what he does, he does a lot. Greene in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, he will open the Cork French Film Festival with his latest film La Chambre Bleue (The Blue Room) this Sunday, March 1st at 7pm at the Gate Cinema. Other Amalric films are also included in the festival programme, including On Tour, which he also directed, and Jimmy P, both screening on Monday, March 2nd in the Gate Cinema at 6.30pm and 9pm respectively; and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Love is the Perfect Crime (L’Amour est un crime parfait) on Tuesday, March 3rd at 6.30pm and 9pm respectively.

Venus in Fur (La Vénus à la fourrure) and Chicken with Plums (Le poulet aux prunes) will be screened Wednesday, March 4th, at 6.30pm and 9pm It’s a vast array of films, and his latest, The Blue Room, brings the Frenchman’s artistic genius in yet another direction. The thriller follows an adulterous tryst, after which the man (played by Amalric) finds himself under investigation for an unknown crime. Drawing some parallels to the Hollywood blockbust-

er Gone Girl, the film is based on the 60s novel by legendary crime writer Georges Simenon. Amalric explains that having read the book, he never felt that he would make a film out of it. “Simenon wrote so many novels, that any house in France or Belgium, in stacks of books in the toilet or under the stairs, you’ll find one of his books,” says the 49 year old. “Everyone says ‘my favourite Simenon is this one or that one,’ but to read all his books is impossible. So you almost fall on your favourite by chance.”

Amalric highlights that it was his producer that told him to “stop writing” and do a film “right now”, and so, his partner Stéphanie Cléau and he co–wrote The Blue Room in six weeks. Just under two months later, they were shooting it.

It was then filmed in just five weeks. “Simenon would write his books in 11 days, so we almost put the same intense energy into the film,” explains Amalric, adding the way Simenon describes details such as a “bee on the belly, the sound of the cars outside when they are making love” are all things “that make you want to

This intensity certainly shines through in the film, further heightened by the fact that Amalric’s partner Cléau, who helped co–write the movie, also appears as the mistress. “To play this woman, who is so mysterious that you can’t tell exactly if did she kill or not, meant it was good

to have an unknown face. I would call her the threat of the unknown,” he smiles. “It works because Léa Drucker, who plays my wife in the film, is very famous in France and people recognise her as an actress.”

He adds the intimacy of the film is further strengthened by the cast, with the sound engineer playing the husband in the film, while the makeup artist’s daughter plays his child.

Flitting between being a director and actor is something Amalric appears to love. “We are made of different pieces, and some days you just see disaster and other days it’s more to be like a little child in the breast of an amazing woman,” he says. He adds that with movies, he “fell” into them, “wanting to fabricate” his own films. “I did lots of jobs in movies, and love all those jobs that make a set up…acting is just another for me, another manual job in films,” he adds.

Oscar winner comes to Cork The Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film is to be screened in Cork next week. Ida, the first Polish film to receive an Oscar, will be shown on Thursday, March 5th at 8pm in St John’s Central College by Cork Cine Club.

From acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski (Last Resort, My Summer of Love), the drama is about a young novitiate nun in 1962 Poland who, on the verge of taking her vows, makes a shocking discovery about her past. Accepting the Academy Award, Pawlikowski said: “We make a film about silence and withdrawing from the world and

the need for contemplation — and here we are, at the epicentre of world noise and attention. Fantastic! Life is full of surprises.” Tickets are €8.50/€7 which includes a nightly Cine Club membership fee.

A Cork artist is to “take over” the Cork Community Print Shop. John Flynn is to have a solo exhibition at the Oliver Plunkett Street venue on Friday, March 6th, entitled Takeover.

The night will be a showcase of art, music and food. Along with a display of Flynn’s work, Shookrah and Liquid Emotion will

both be performing, while food will be provided by Cool Beans: a restaurant based in the print shop that specialises in vegan, gluten–free meals and is run solely on donations.

The exhibition is part of a new monthly exhibition in the printshop called Exile, which will feature a new artist every month.
