Hippo hippo hurray!
Editor’s letter This week saw the emergence of the first daffodils of Spring (at least the first that I’ve seen), whether waving lazily in the woods near my house or maintaining their dignity while getting spattered with mud and grit at the side of the dual carriageway by the Tivoli Docks. It’s a lovely sight to see and, though I haven’t come across any yet, I’m sure there are snowdrops and bluebells aplenty equally enthusiastic about making their mark on the world for a few too–short weeks. Spring is traditionally a time for taking stock and moving on after the privations of Winter, and little hints of rebirth are everywhere. The long saga of Cork Airport has taken a slight upward turn with the announcement of new routes, and here’s hoping that this marks the end of the taxi to the runway and the beginning of a powerful take–off surge which will soon see it soaring. The city and county, in general, are shaking off the icicles and stretching towards the sun: 3,000 more people are at work. Cork’s festival calendar got a significant boost this week with regard to funding and the announcement of new and exciting additions. People are coming up with new ideas to make their mark, new ventures are being given a chance, new ideas are abounding. Cork’s music scene, already outstanding, is growing again as we head further into 2015. March itself is packed full of the first big occasions of the year too, and Mothers Day and St Patrick’s Day are just around the corner: we have a few pages of great gift ideas for the child of the mother who has everything this week. And, as we prepare for St Patrick’s Day, we’re also preparing for Seachtain na Gaeilge. Is minic anois a chloisim an Ghaeilge á labhairt tímpeall na háite, anseo i gCorcaigh, i measc daoine fásta agus daoine óga freisin. An tseachtain seo, bhíos ag siúl aniar ar Pana agus chuala mé ceathrar nó cúigear daltaí á labhairt gan feitheóireacht ar bith. Bhíd ag chatteráil as Gaeilge toisc gur mian leo, agus ina measc páistí nár thánaigh a gcuid túistí ó Éireann ar chor ar bith. Ar fheabhas ar fad! I’m a frequent advocate of multiculturalism in my letters here, and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic to hear young people whose parents arrived here from far away having embraced our culture to the extent that they were nattering away in Irish with their friends. So, my friends, onwards and upwards! The winter is over. Dust off the happy faces and the glad rags, and let’s look forward to stellar Spring, followed by a spectacular Summer!

3000 jobs for Cork in January continued from page 1 creating jobs, and ensuring as many of the new jobs as possible go to people on the Live Register, is working.” However, the Cork South Central deputy cautioned that there is still more to do: “Long–term unemployment is down 9.8% year on year,” he stated, “but it remains a concern, with 162,776 people signing on for 12 months or more.” Speaking to The Cork News, Deputy Lynch highlighted growing activity around Cork, making particular mention of the increasing fortunes of the construction industry, one of the hardest hit during the financial crisis:
“I think what we’re seeing in Cork this year, which has been absent for a long while, is the reappearance of cranes on the Cork skyline,” he said. “There are cranes at Páirc Ui Chaoimh, cranes at Albert Quay, and cranes are soon to arrive at the Events Centre at South Gate Bridge and at the old Capitol Cinema complex. The growth in construction in the Cork area as a result of these projects will give opportunities to people in the construction workforce which has been absent in the last few years.” Deputy Lynch also cautioned against a return to ‘boom time’ construction levels: “During the boom, construction went from a sustainable 12% to an unsus-
tainable 24%, then crashed back to 6%. We need to get it back to 12% again,” he concluded. However, construction industry representatives in Cork say the upswing has yet to make a significant dent. A public meeting on the continuing challenges faced by Cork builders and contractors is to be held on Wednesday, 11th March. The Construction Industry Federation (CIF), who are oranising the event, say they hope to address the difficulties faced by those in the sector, particularly outside the capital: “While the industry is starting to see an increase in activity, this has been predominantly in the Dublin and
Greater Dublin area. Unfortunately many construction operators in Cork are yet to feel the pick up. “We will be discussing the various issues that are holding back house building and how the market is expected to develop in the coming years,” said Tom Parlon, CIF. The event will also address the changes to public procurement for the construction sector, which will affect those looking to win contracts for schools, roads and social housing. The meeting will take place at the Radisson Hotel, Little Island, at 5pm on Wednesday. Attendees are required to register in advance by emailing bcody@cif.ie, or by calling 021 435 1410.

The project was co-ordinated by Karen Deasy of ABC. “We received great support from all our families and we are delighted to present a cheque for €1210 to this great cause,” she said. The funds will go towards the funding of a new Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer unit at C.U.H. Picture by Gerard McCarthy.
The Cork vote is expected to play a significant role in the outcome of May’s marriage equality referendum for the country as a whole, according to Amnesty International, Ireland. “Cork is one of the key battlegrounds in this campaign
and it’s important every effort is made to maximise the vote here on Leeside,” said executive director Colm O’Gorman. Mr O’Gorman was speaking at Yes Equality Cork where he called on Cork residents to campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote: “Campaigns need people.
The more people you have, the more successful your campaign can be. “It’s important canvassing happens locally in every city, town, street, village and farmyard in Ireland,” he said. Yes Equality Cork, a coalition of community and volun-
tary organisations advocating a ‘Yes’ vote, also acknowledged the importance of canvassing for those campaigning for equality: “The key to winning this campaign is to fight an intensive general election-style campaign locally” he said.

‘It’s been a long struggle’ Registration fee reverts to €100 for nurses and midwives Work is to commence on building morale in the nursing sector, following a successful campaign against a 50 percent hike in the annual retention fee. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is to restore the annual retention fee for nurses and midwives to €100 for 2015. The INMO, SIPTU and the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) had all advised their respective members to make no payment, with support only for a retention fee of €100. INMO industrial relations officer for Cork Patsy Doyle stated that local nurses are “quietly pleased” by the move, seen as a “very positive development for nurses and midwives.” She said: “It’s been a long struggle, but they have now seen that the past five to six months has worked and they harnessed that support
“Now there is a sign that things are getting a bit better.” across their unions.” Ms Doyle stated that having spoken to nurses at Cork University Hospital, she feels this is a “fair outcome.” She added that focus is now shifting to building staff morale: “It is very poor, due to the legacy of the moratorium,” she told The Cork News. “I think they have lost so much financially, promotions–wise, and choices, and now there is

a sign that things are getting a bit better. We have looked for opportunities to build on education leave, part–time working, and career breaks, all the things that matter to people. We are starting to build up from the ground again.” Labour Party Deputy for Cork South West Michael
McCarthy outlined the hike in the annual retention fee as a “significant increase for a profession that has taken a number of hits over the past number of years.” He stated: “Not only that, but it was obligatory, so nurses must pay it in order to continue practising as registered nurses, which is an un-
acceptable way of conducting business. “Nurses and midwives are at the very centre of our health service and we cannot underestimate their role in improving the experience of patients in wards, emergency departments and primary care centres across the country.”
Cork researchers to develop cheaper mobile internet technology A Cork research institute has secured €5.2 million European funding to develop quicker, cheaper mobile internet technology. The Tyndall National Institute will lead a team of researchers developing new technology to deal with the increasing demand for mobile–ready devices in Europe. It is anticipated that 11.5 billion such devices will be in use by 2020, and that current European networks will be insufficient to cope with demand. The UCC–based institute is to embark on a three–year project that aims to develop technology five times more efficient than that currently in place.

‘One day I’ll walk unaided’ North Cork community “I’m going rallies for Brian to keep By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
A north Cork man has vowed to walk unaided once again as he currently undergoes rehabilitation following a freak biking accident. Fundraisers are taking place to ensure that Castletownroche’s Brian Magner achieves his goal, after the 38–year–old lost partial use of his legs in an accident on the Ballyhoura Mountain Biking Trails in November. “Whatever way I fell, it was on my back and I also took a blow to the head — but I had a helmet on,” Brian told The Cork News. “Initially I got up after the fall and managed to walk for a little
bit but then I just collapsed with the pain and my legs went totally numb.” Brian was airlifted to Cork University Hospital, and then transferred to the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where he underwent an operation for a blood clot on his spine. “After the accident, I had no feeling in both legs, and then maybe a day after the operation, my right leg started to come on a little bit and each day afterwards, my right leg started to improve,” said Brian, a sheet metal worker with Matflo Engineering in Mallow. Now at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dún Laoghaire since January, Brian’s right leg is functioning at between 80 to 90%, while his left leg is still weak. “I’m go-
trying and keep putting in the effort.”
ing to keep trying and keep putting in the effort, and hoping one day I’ll walk unaided. At the moment it’s hard to see it, but I’m proving to myself all the time that it is possible.” Brian added that after blacking out on the day of the accident in Ballyhoura, he initially feared he would be brain damaged: “At that stage I wasn’t too worried about walking, and more about

whether my brain could be going into shutdown. However, later in the night that was cleared, which was a huge relief. “I was saying to myself on the day of the accident ‘I don’t care if I’m in a wheelchair once the head is ok’,” he said. Due to leave the NRH in April, fundraisers are underway to ensure Brain’s physiotherapy costs are covered. A 20km, 55km and 85km ‘Cycle for Brian’ event will take place
on Saturday, March 28th in Castletownroche, while his local club, Castletownroche GAA, is to hold a golf classic in Doneraile on Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th. “There will have to be a few alterations made to the home alright, and once I come out of hospital there is physio, swimming and the gym, so money being raised will be very handy with likes of home improvements and therapies,” said Brian. “I never thought

New airport routes no guarantee for future By Eoghan MacNeill
The Cork Chamber of Commerce has called for increased investment to secure the future of Cork Airport, following the announcement of new Cork–Ibiza and Cork–Cardiff routes. While accepting the announcements are positive for the airport and city, the increase in passengers will “absolutely not” guarantee the airport’s viability, said
Conor Healy, Cork Chamber of Commerce. “It’s positive to see the development of new routes, including one from an airline which has also committed to reopening their Cork–Prague route,” he said of CSA Czech Airlines, who are to provide the Ibiza service. “We need however to see significant route development, with a priority on routes where demand is high at both ends: Germany, Italy, Northern France and the UK, for example,” he added. Mr Healy told The Cork
“We need to see significant route development.”
News that significant government assistance is required to ensure the airport’s continued existence: “What’s needed is a
mixed package of measures, including financial support to facilitate route development and marketing,” he said. Cork South Central TD Jerry Buttimer, while noting there is “no silver bullet” to secure the airport’s future, agreed that funding should be made available for route development and marketing: “We need to put in place a strategy, in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, that markets the region as a whole, and prioritise Cork Airport’s niche in the market,” he told us. The
Fine Gael TD called on the Cork Chamber of Commerce to play a more active role: “The Chamber must be more proactive, and not just play a lobbying role in this work,” he said. Meanwhile, announcing the twice–weekly Cork–Cardiff FlyBe route, Cork Airport Managing Director Niall McCarthy said:“This Cardiff route will be a significant boost to the local economy and provide a new destination for local businessmen and holidaymakers.” Kevin Cul-
linane of Cork Airport told The Cork News he hopes the new routes give an indication of the airport’s potential: “The Ibiza route alone will mean 8,000 more passengers passing through Cork Airport during the summer season. We hope it will bring a degree of reassurance to people of the viability of Cork Airport.” The year-round Cork–Cardiff route commences Saturday, June 6th, while the summer season Cork-Ibiza flights will launch the following Thursday, June 11th.

Spider–Man artist takes on Converse From one icon to another, a Converse design by Marvel Comics Spider–Man illustrator Will Sliney will be revealed next month with an 80s vibe to the sneaker’s artwork. The Ballycotton native was asked to be involved in the footwear brand’s latest campaign Made By You, by customising the iconic Chuck Taylors. The 32–year–old’s design will be revealed at a launch party in Dublin on Thursday, April 9th. “I’ve done some work for Umbro before and I think there is a connection between them and Converse,” said Sliney. “They got my contact details that way and they just approached me.” He outlined that no brief was given by the worldwide–recognised American shoe company, just a “blank canvas”. “They said ‘do whatever you want, whatever inspires you really’,” he said, adding that the shape of the sneaker lends itself well to artwork. Sliney told The Cork News

that while he isn’t allowed to show the design just yet, he could reveal that it’s an “’80s music design”. “That was my idea, and I just went with it,” he said. “It’s definitely different from my typical superhero stuff.” Sliney added with a laugh that currently friends and family are asking him to “reserve different sizes of shoes”. “I’m telling them to wait and see what it is like first!” he said.

It was a glorious triumph, carved out meticulously in the most dramatic of sporting play–books and one that I’m sure Harrington will treasure and savour for quite some time. His relief as the final putt sank from sight on the second play–off hole against American rookie Daniel Berger was palpable. The same 170 yard, par 3 where, less than an hour previously, Harrington’s tournament hopes almost washed away in the greenside lake where his ball had vanished. The emotional roller– coaster that was Harrington attempting to return to the big time was compulsive and excruciating viewing in equal measure. The three– time major winner, true to form, had us all sweating in our seats. Every shot was agonised over, every putt measured and considered in minute detail. Nothing about this wonderful victory came easy, but it could never have been any other way. This PGA triumph has been seven years in the making. For Irish golf fans, Harrington’s last tour win at the PGA Championship in Oakland Hills in 2008 seemed like an age away. For the man himself, it must have felt like a lifetime ago. One wonders how the Dubliner managed to cope with such an alarming and frustrating slump in form in the intervening years between then and now. There must have been times when Harrington wondered if he could ever win again.
him off, the man himself remained undeterred. He never quit, never gave up and he remained polite, courteous and dignified throughout the whole, horrible process. Most of us understand the simplicity of maintaining courage in our conviction when everything is going well. It’s easy to stay positive in a happy, relaxing environment, but when times get tough and the tide starts to turn, only then can we measure true temperament. Harrington has had his fair share of critics over the years. The Irish fans who roared his every stroke during those three major championship wins slowly began to question his stated obsession with the game and perfecting his swing. They had reasons to feel frustrated, watching Ireland’s greatest ever golfer seemingly hell–bent on destroying himself inch by inch, stroke by stroke, putt by putt. But when the questions came, Harrington remained unflinching in his self confidence. A lesser man might have thrown in the towel, lashed out and hidden away from public view. Not our Pádraig. His persistent stance that everything would come right was mocked at times, as results and performances went from bad to worse. Why did he change his swing? Why has he deliberately put on weight? Why is he wearing glasses? Why has he changed his putter again? Looking back now, Harrington was desperately searching for something to pull him back in from the brink. A highly intelligent, deep thinker, Harrington
“A lesser man might have thrown in the towel, lashed out and hidden away from public view. Not our Pádraig.”
Amid the hundreds of missed cuts, the thousands of wayward drives and an unending list of ailments and problems; from putting yips to botched chips and an inability to correct even the most basic flaws in his game, it must have been tough for Harrington to remain positive. Such was the dramatic scale of his downward spiral that his incredible legacy, one of a tiny elite group to win three major tournaments, was in danger of being swallowed up by stories of finicky swing changes and an obsessive urge to tinker with his game. And in the face of a string of poor results and an ever– decreasing world ranking, Harrington insisted that all was well and that his time would come again. His self–belief was nothing short of remarkable. When the world’s media was scribbling furiously to write

studied and analysed himself to the point of paralysis. Crucially, he never lost faith in himself. Then, a few weeks ago, an epiphany dawned: he was being too hard on himself, over–thinking his game. His newfound philosophy took only weeks to materialise in a PGA tour win and a cheque for over a million dollars. Harrington’s success this week is a tribute to his willingness to grit his teeth and battle through the pain. It would have been so easy for him to admit defeat in his fight for redemption and sail off into the sunset to enjoy his fortune in retirement. But something inside him made him dig in. The stories of his gruelling practice routines are legendary among the golfing fraternity. Just last December, after a win in the Indonesian open, a victory that in itself proved to Harrington that he was close to a return to form, he set a target to make 2,000 practice swings a day over the winter break. When most of his fellow professionals were relaxing on their holidays, Harrington was determined to hone his swing for the start of the new season. There is a lesson here for all of us. Too many people are willing to accept failure at the first obstacle. The easy option is always to give up and move on, the hard thing to do is to keep battling and keep faith in one’s own ability. Harrington’s self–belief and his sheer bloody mindedness got him through the worst form of his life. His reward is a jump of almost 200 places in the latest world rankings, a two–year PGA Tour exemption and a place at the US Masters in Augusta next month. As Ronan O’Gara would say: you’ve got to admire the balls of the fella.

The figure, considered on par with that recorded in 2013, is below the national average of 12.8 percent. Kerry recorded the lowest Q4 commercial vacancy rate at 9.1 percent, while Sligo recorded the highest at 16.5 percent, according to the GeoDirectory report.

Animal welfare charity’s concern as rescue cases rise By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
A Cork animal welfare charity has appealed for responsible pet ownership, as it’s forced to temporarily close its doors due to spiralling costs over a recent surge in rescue cases. The number of dogs needing help from Cork Dog Action Welfare Group (DAWG) has “increased exponentially” and the charity, which rescues Cork’s abandoned, abused and neglected dogs, is struggling under the financial pressure. Kim Kerins of DAWG outlined that recent cases included one dog, Hope (pictured), who was found at the side of the road with serious lacerations to her body, likely caused by an attack by a bigger dog.
“Think long and hard before getting a dog. It is a big commitment.”
“She is doing very well now but still needs daily bandage changes under sedation as her wounds are very sore,” said Ms Kerins, adding that other cases coming through their doors in recent weeks included a setter who was left behind in
a house when its owners emigrated; two lurchers who were emaciated and covered in mange and sores; and a west highland terrier who has a severe heart murmur, rotten teeth, and a coat so matted it had to be shaved off.
“We have a number of dogs in our care needing very expensive treatment,” she said. Ms Kerins appealed for people to practice responsible pet ownership, by chipping and neutering their dogs. “Think long and hard before getting a dog,” she said. “It
is a big commitment.” She added that the new welfare bill on the protection of animals from abuse and neglect has to be enforced, and that perpetrators must be held to account under this new legalisation.

Funding for local festivals
Time to get mad The saying ‘mad as a March hare’ is the premise of a new video competition, aimed at protecting the species. As the Irish hare is threatened by agricultural intensification, and competition with the introduced brown hare, the Irish Wildlife Trust has launched the Mad March Hare video competition. This month is their mating season,
when “mad March hares” are often seen boxing each other. However, contrary to popular belief, the fighting is not typically males fighting over the opportunity to mate with a female but is in fact females fighting off the advances of unwanted males. To take part in the campaign, participants must record video footage of Irish
hares boxing and post it on facebook.com/IrishWildlifeTrust. They are also asked to submit sightings of rabbits and hares to the Atlas of Mammals in Ireland run by the National Biodiversity Data Centre. The winner will secure a copy of Mammals of the British Isles: Handbook.
Sixteen local festivals have received funding to “broaden their appeal” to overseas visitors. Along the Wild Atlantic Way, Cork events to be allocated funding included A Taste of West Cork Food Festival (€5,000), West Cork Literary Festival (€4,000), Masters of Tradition (€3,000), Jim Dowling Uileann Pipe Trad Festival (€3,000), Fastnet Short Film Festival (€3,000), Cape Clear Island Storytelling Festival (€3,000), West Cork Rally (€3,000), Summer on the West Cork Islands (€2,000), Schull Regatta (€2,000), and Calves Week (€2,000). Other Cork festivals to receive a financial boost included Cork Folk Festival (€5,000), Sounds from a Safe Harbour (€5,000), Cork Craft Design (€3,000), Ocean to City (€2,500), Racing Home for Easter (€2,000), and Open House Cork (€2,000). In total Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring announced funding of €564,000, which was approved by Fáilte Ireland for regional festivals and events taking place this year. He stated the funding
will allow local communities to “broaden their appeal” to overseas visitors “who will be able to experience everything from culture and sport, to festivals and fun”. “These events are the lifeblood of tourism for many local communities and give tourists compelling reasons to explore rural Ireland,” he said. Cork South Central Fine
Gael TD Jerry Buttimer said that funding for Cork festivals will continue to help support tourism and cultural activities in Cork: “Festivals are a very important part of the social and cultural fabric Cork, each year they help attract tourists to our city and county and are an opportunity for local residents to explore a wide variety of events,” he commented.

Cork communities urged to apply for €100,000 prize fund Cork community groups have been urged to follow the lead of Fountainstown last year and apply for a share of a €100,000 fund for creative projects aimed at improving Irish community life. KBC Bank Ireland’s ‘Bright Ideas’ initiative will award funding to a wide range of projects, while ten winners will be selected by a judging
panel to compete for “Ireland’s Brightest Idea” and an additional €5,000. Now in its second year, the scheme funded 28 different projects across Ireland last year. One of those was Fountainstown, which received €4,000 to install a solar light at a local bus shelter. Initially surprised to receive funding, having thought his
idea was “too local,” Fountainstown resident David Mulcahy encouraged other Cork towns to follow: “Apply no matter how small you feel your idea is,” he said. Applications for the 2015 Bright Ideas awards are now open, and can submitted to the website, kbcbrightideas. com, until the closing date, April 30th.

Note–worthy: Desmond wins Ó Riada prize A Cork–born singer has been named the winner of a prestigious composition competition. Dublin–based Eoghan Desmond came first in the Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition and as winner of the competition, his piece Mother Goose’s Melodies will receive its world première in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral on Friday, May 1st at 7.30pm. Choir Chamber Ireland, conducted by Paul Hillier, will perform the piece as part of its annual collaborative concert with Cork International Choral Festival. Desmond made his solo debut as a singer with East Cork Choral Society in Mendelssohn’s Elijah in 2003, following his choral training at St Fin Barre’s. He has since gone onto give numerous performances with Dublin University
Choral Society and, as a member of Irish Composer’s Collective, has had his own compositions performed in Ireland by groups such as Chamber Choir Ireland, Ensemble Avalon, and the RTÉ ConTempo String Quartet. Members of the judging panel said the Mother Goose’s Melodies composition was “well-written, has plenty of character with an individual voice coming through, retains its freshness and is full of interesting contrasts”. Mr Desmond stated the piece was inspired by last year’s winning setting of Donal MacErlaine’s Solomon Grundy. “It is very exciting, therefore, to be included in this year’s seminar, having set not one but six nursery rhymes from my childhood,” he said.

W
e’re booking our summer hols here in Chateau Du Hugo and Monica. What is the best destination out of Cork airport to make sure that my smallies don’t have to meet people who drive vans for a living?
Monica, One of those places on Douglas Road that you could see from space, if it wasn’t for all the trees.
H
ere’s my advice, Monica. You should start your own reality show channel on YouTube. That way millions of people could get to hate you, every day. I’m sure it must be desperate for you, having to wait in line at the airport next to a guy called Sully who says “I do be going to Lanzers, girl.” I hear the posher types around town only fly to Heathrow and Amsterdam from Cork these days. You’ll hear them in the queue shouting “we’re flying on to Barbados, none of your Canaries for us.” You’ll also hear “Thank jaysus for that” from the people queuing for the Canaries. Cork Airport: It’s a good old laugh really.
W
e’ve been invited to a 50 Shades of Grey theme party. What do you think I should wear? We’re open to all sorts.
Lucy, Ballintemple.

o as a nun. At least it will be a talking point. It can be very hard to get a conversation going at these swingers’ parties. I should know. A word of warning though: Make absolutely sure this party is full of people who want to get jiggy with it. Myself and Mr Magoo looked like right eejits last year when we turned up for what we thought was a Bondage Party. Turns out there was a typo on our invite and it was supposed to be a Bond Party. It was full of guys in tuxedos laughing their arses off at poor Mr Magoo in his gimp suit. We ran out the door and found a swingers party four doors down. That’s why I love a night out in St Lukes. You’re never short of choice.
“We ran out the door and found a swingers party four doors down. That’s why I love a night out in St Lukes.”
I
am like so excited right now. Our marching band is taking part in your St Patrick’s Day parade this year. My grandparents are from Kerry and Limerick, so I’m so excited to be making my first trip to your little town. What would you recommend? Shannon Erin Caitlin O’Murphy Jnr III, Chicago.
W
here do I start? Kinsale is a little town. Bandon is a little town. Dunmanway is a little disappointing. Cork is a massive city. People have completely underestimated the population because the crowd from the census office are afraid to count the norries properly. (Can’t say I blame them.) I’d keep the Kerry and Limerick link quiet if I were you. Cork is full of people like Dowcha Donie who will go mad trying to console you when he hears that you have links with our savage cousins from the west. If you think that sounds nice, you haven’t met Dowcha Donie. Very busy hands.
W
e’ve booked a camping holiday to France this year. The only problem is that the French campsites insist that men have to wear Speedos in the pool. My Gerry said “what have the Froggies got against my O’Neill’s shorts?” when I told him and now he doesn’t want to go. What can I do?
Tricia, Farranree.
T
ell Gerry that the French women want to be able to size up his assets before they start a holiday affair with him, down behind the campsite launderette. That will get him in a pair of budgie smugglers fast enough. Unless of course he feels a little under–powered in that area and would prefer to hide his shortcomings in something nice and loose. Poor Mr Magoo was a laughing stock wearing Speedos around the pool four years ago in the south of France. One woman laughed so much she nearly didn’t see me trying to get off with her gigantic boyfriend. ‘Nearly’ being the operative word. The temper on her.
H
ow are oo going on? Myself and my brother Timmy Timmy Mick are coming up to Cork next week to get new rig outs. Where would we get a nice cup of tea and maybe a sandwich without the likes of pesto in it?
Dan Timmy Mick, a fair bit outside Glengarriff.
I
’d say your best bet would be 1984. That’s not a café. It’s a year. It was the last time fellas with three first names from West Cork were catered for in the city. I tell you who I feel sorry for – Mick Timmy Dan. I’d say it’s a safe bet you have a brother by that name (names really) and I’d love to know why he is being left at home. Maybe it was his month to take the bath. Honestly Dan Timmy Mick, I think your best bet is to stop off in Bandon for a bit of grub. They’d be well used to fellas eating a ham sandwich while wearing a cap.

Educate Together vies for school’s patronage
Cork residents asked to say no to junk mail A campaign aimed at cutting down on the waste generated by junk mail has been announced by Cork County Council. Launching the initiative – whereby “No Junk Mail” stickers are being made available to Cork householders – Dr Mary Stack, Cork County Council explained: “Junk mail is not only a great source of annoyance for
many householders but it is also a huge generator of unnecessary waste. “While junk mail can be recycled, most householders when asked say they would prefer not to get it in the first place. “The ‘No Junk Mail’ stickers we are making available are a polite way to request distributors not to give you the material.”
The campaign is part of the new Southern Region Waste Management Plan, which includes a range of measures aimed at making waste disposal more efficient in the south. The “No Junk Mail” stickers are available from Cork County Council’s offices, while a number of Tidy Towns committees are also distributing the stickers.
The multi–denominational Educate Together organisation is to proceed with an application to establish a new national school in Carrigtwohill, opening this September. The Department of Education and Skills has invited organisations to apply for the patronage of the school. These applications will address a number of criteria, such as parental demand for each school type, and must be submitted by Friday, March 20th. Speaking about the announcement, Educate Together’s CEO, Paul Rowe, said: “This is great news for parents in the area who have been seeking an Educate Together school. Parents will be able to choose the type of school they want for their children — and now, thanks to this announcement, as early as September 2015.” Niall Wall, regional development officer for Ireland South (pictured), outlined he is “confident” that there will be sufficient demand for an
Educate Together school in the area. A public information meeting is to be held on

Solar power coming to north Cork? As unlikely as it may seem in the midst of a cool and dull start to Spring, County Cork may be about to get its first ever solar power plant. A site at Ballytrasna, near the River Lee Reservoir at Lissarda in north Cork, has been earmarked for nearly five and a half square kilometres of solar panels which, if the plans go ahead, will eventually house nearly 2,700 individual cells. At present, proposals involve only a fraction of the
energy generated finding its way to the national grid: most of it will provide electricity for the headquarters of Enerco, the windfarm developers. Local residents are unhappy with the proposals and have submitted dozens of complaints to An Bord Pleanála ahead of the March 11th cut–off point, citing health, safety, environmental and structural concerns. Meanwhile, Enerco has said there is no definitive starting point for the potential ‘solar farm’.

“
My first thought is ‘I don’t want to get up’… or something along those lines. I like to lie in, and when I get up depends on what time lectures start. Usually that’s 7am or 8am, after pushing the snooze button five times. I never plan my wardrobe, I just open the door and choose something I like or recently bought. I mix and match things, new items with the old, which is probably why my style is eclectic — a bit all over the place. Usually I’ll throw on my ripped jeans, flats and big coat, something that’s casual, but not too casual. I love following trends but like to adjust them to my personal style. Although I’m a fashion blogger, I’ve never felt the need to always look ‘polished’. I’m very chilled in life and wouldn’t kill myself over a bad outfit…and there have been a few! My worst fashion disaster is wearing something that doesn’t suit my figure. I’m not the tallest person but love wearing really baggy clothes. They look great on the hanger but on me, not so much. I’ll look at the photos afterwards and think ‘oh my God, why did I wear that?’ On the other hand, my favourite piece in my wardrobe is something I never wear! It’s this bottle–green cashmere coat I got as a gift from a friend, which I absolutely love. Ankle length and a real statement piece for somewhere like Fashion Week, but not every day. Onto breakfast, and I’m really into healthy eating lately. Well, at least I’m trying anyway. I’ll always have oats and an apple along with black coffee — French blend in the coffee press — which I can’t start my day without. I’m studying marketing at Cork Institute of Technology, and I’m just in the second semester now so still learning about the basics. I’d like to get into fashion marketing after the course and move to Lon-

don to study at Central Saint Martins. I don’t have it all planned out yet though, I’m only 19! When I was little, I wasn’t particularly fashionable, and my mum used to dress me in hideous ‘90s clothes. It was my grandma, a seamstress, who first introduced me to fashion as she’d make her own dresses. I was absolutely fascinated by that. When I started getting pocket money, and a chance to buy my own clothes, that’s where

my whole obsession started. I was following fashion blogs, which were then the main inspiration for me to start sharing my own personal style. I work on the blog when I get home from college in the evenings. I could be meeting up with a photographer first to take some pictures and then later on, I’ll blog. I also work weekends at Brown Thomas, so evenings really are my only time to write. I find it relaxes me. The blog could be on anything, like that day’s outfit —

something like my scuba coat, a casual pair of jeans and a big scarf — or fashion buys of the season. To relax, I love cooking. I won’t do it every evening, as I don’t have that much time, but maybe two or three times a week. It’s normally mix and match with weird ingredients. Sometimes it works… and sometimes it doesn’t. I know my boyfriend doesn’t always appreciate the meals! I’ll usually make up something for lunch as well the next
day, again an experiment. I love this salad I make with chicken, cooked with loads of herbs, and then added to couscous, peppers and a salad. I say ‘added’, but it’s pretty much thrown together! In the evenings I also spend time with friends, going to the cinema or out for dinner. I love spending time with people. I’m also trying to get into styling, for my portfolio, so I could be contacting models and photographers. Whenever I’ve a day off, I try to do
something with it. Every two weeks, I’ll go shopping, and hope I’m a smart shopper. I buy some of my clothes secondhand from charity shops, which is great as you get really nice pieces that no one else has and it’s also for charity. You get something for yourself and help others. If money was no object, I’d love a Chanel Boy bag, which is just gorgeous but around €3,000 which I really can’t justify spending on a bag! Anyway, my addiction is shoes, I just love them. I work in the shoe department in Brown Thomas so once pay–day comes, I’m wondering ‘hmmmm, what will I get today?’ While I love heels, it’s flats I adore. If you’re not comfortable, then what’s the point? I do declutter a lot and give clothes away to charity simply because I’ve a tiny studio apartment, with only one closet! I keep 80% of my things at my boyfriend’s house! Before heading off to sleep, I might read a magazine — I’m obsessed with Vogue and have so many, there’s nowhere to put them! Then there’s looking on Facebook and going through my skin regime, which I do every night no matter what. I find in life, I definitely try to be a good person and get the most out of the day. I do have regrets, like everyone, but I try to learn from them, and make sure they don’t happen again. The person I most admire in the fashion world is fairly obvious: Anna Wintour. She’s a goddess. In my personal life, my dad was a big inspiration for me. I was born in Poland, but have lived in Cork for eight years now, pretty much half my life. My dad moved here when I was about 10 and then I followed him two years later. I can’t really remember my time back in Poland, but sometimes I do wonder, ‘what if I hadn’t moved to Cork?’ but I can’t even imagine it. I’m so happy here.”

New centre for Midleton youth
Cigarette packaging criticised by Cork smokers’ group
A drop–in centre for young people in Midleton is to open its doors in May, located at the site of the town’s old fire station. My Place Midleton is to consist of a dedicated youth space incorporating a café, recreation area, music room and arts space. It will be open to all teens with an emphasis on youth health awareness, support, and information and staffed by trained youth workers. A dedicated counselling room will also be available. A fundraiser for the initiative is to take place next week in east Cork to raise funds for its completion. A fashion show takes place in Midleton Park Hotel on Thursday, March 12th, with featured boutiques including the Kilkenny Store, Sheena’s, Dakota, Katwalk, High Society, Scarlett, and The Arcade. The event kicks off at 8pm, and tickets are €15, available from participating stores, McCarthy’s Newsagent and The Granary.
Cork smokers’ support group Forest Éireann have criticised this week’s government announcement on the banning of branded cigarette packs. John Mallon of Forest Éireann has questioned whether removing the branding from cigarette packs will have an impact on youth smoking: “They’re arguing that children are ‘mesmerised’ by cigarette packs. I can’t see it myself,” he told The Cork News. Mr Mallon referred to Ireland’s current ban on in–store tobacco advertising and displays, saying that this legislation mitigates the effectiveness of cigarette packaging: “Shop assistants aren’t even allowed to open the doors of cigarette vending machines to show you what’s inside. “You don’t see the cigarette box until you’re actually paying for it,” he said. Mr Mallon further questioned whether plain packaging would affect the tobacco

consumption of older smokers: “If beer or whiskey came in plain, plastic bottles branded with pictures of alcohol–related illnesses, you’d do the same thing you always did. “You’d take it home and pour it into a glass,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cork North Central Fine Gael TD Dara Murphy insisted that the government will not reverse the announcement, regardless of potential legal challenges: “Ireland’s new plain packaging legislation for tobacco products is about protecting
the lives of our citizens and we will not be bullied into reversing it. “We’re the first country in the EU to introduce this kind of legislation and hopefully many others will follow,” he said. The legislation is also sup-
ported by Cork South Central TD Micheál Martin who, calling on the government not be “bullied by tobacco firms,” said “anything that can be done to reduce the impact of smoking and the health problems arising from it should be welcomed. Tobacco companies invest huge sums of money in advertising and marketing their products in order to recruit new customers.”

Young entrepreneurs strive for Croke Park final Cork student entrepreneurs are competing for a €4,000 prize fund and the chance to represent their county in the national final of the Student Enterprise Awards in Croke Park. 45 mini–companies and 400 students from across Cork will present their business plans to a panel of judges in UCC today, Friday, and two will progress to the final. “We are looking for teams that looked at the project creatively and developed an innovative idea with a realistic strategy to back it up,” said Adrienne Rodgers, Local Enterprise Office, Cork City.

communications device to its ground station. “It’s entrepreneurial, it’s technological, it’s good fun,” said Dr Joe Connell, CIT, who was involved in the mentoring of entrants. The two schools now progress to the national final at Birr Castle, Offaly on Saturday, April 18th, aiming to reach the European finals in Portugal in

Kinsale students address Oireachtas committee as Gaeilge Students from a Scoil Phobail Chionn tSáile in Kinsale joined their counterparts from Belfast and Waterford this week to address an Oireachtas sub–committee on youth issues. The meeting, which was held to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge, was conducted entirely in Irish. Aodh Ó’Faoláin, a pupil at the gaelscoil — having spoken on reducing the voting age to 16 — told RTÉ News at Leinster House: “After seeing the interest that was expressed, and the dialogue between the young and the old, it would evoke an interest in me in politics for the future.” Cork South West TD Michael McCarthy chaired the meeting and said “there is no better way to ring in Seachtain na Gaeilge than by encouraging young Irish speakers to participate in a debate in their National Parliament.”

Unlike short-term diets or well-intentioned gym sign ups, Motivation focuses on understanding the behaviour that leads to overeating in the first place; and the ethos of the program can be summed up in one sentence-“It’s not WHAT you eat - It’s WHY.”
Motivation helps you to identify and address your eating habits, emotions, and stress levels so that you can reach your desired weight and maintain it. Unhealthy eating patterns are formed not due to a physiological hunger, but as a
response to a psychological trigger. Motivation helps you identify that trigger; then works with you to improve your life without any fad products or ‘magic’ solutions. When you go for your initial consultation, the staff will use a specially designed computerised questionnaire to analyze certain factors about your lifestyle and eating patterns in order to determine your ‘Mental Weight’. Susan explains “This Mental Weight Questionnaire helps us determine your psychological approach to food, to understand your behaviour and make a permanent change. Diets don’t work; we ensure a genuine lifestyle change so weight loss is permanent.”

Paws for thought With Cork DAWG Every week, Cork's animal shelters are called upon to take care of our city's injured, abandoned and unwanted animals. After veterinary treatment and plenty of TLC, these rescued cats and dogs are ready to start a new life with a loving owner. If you have the budget, time, space and commitment to welcome an animal into your home, adopting a rescue animal might be the right option for you. Meet this week's furry friends of The Cork News...
Lucky
Lucky is beautiful lively 15 month old Jack Russell cross. He loves to play, is great with children and loves company. He gets along well with female dogs, and would be fine with an older, calmer male. Lucky is a lively little boy who is happiest when he is out on his walks and pottering about the garden. Lucky needs a lot of stimulation, so an active family home is a must for this loving little
boy. If you would like Lucky to join your family contact 087 689 36223.
Bubbles
Bubbles is a collie cross, one and a half years old. She is an energetic dog and would suit someone with an active lifestyle. She’s friendly with children but best suited to older children as she is still young. Bubbles is very good with other dogs but a little shy if the other dog is very excitable, and she can be a bit timid around loud or sud-
den noises. If you would like to meet Bubbles contact 085 125 1929.
Brandy
Brandy is a six–year–old chocolate lab, he is a friendly outgoing boy who, through no fault of his own, is looking for a new home. Like most labs he loves people and is great with other dogs. Brandy is neutered and chipped, and looking forward to meeting his new family. If you would like to make Brandy part of your family please contact 085 125 1929.

The rate of inflation The sky is the limit for award– winning balloon artist Jenny Murphy, from Ballincollig. She chats to Róisín Thornhill about just what it takes a fully certified, world–class balloon guru, and how balloons enticed her away from auctioneering.
Did you know that California State Law indicates that foil balloons should never be released outside, or that you must not use metallic ribbon with helium-filled balloons for fear of ignition? No, neither did I, but one person who does, along with many more facts pertaining to the do’s and don’ts of balloon science is Ballincollig based, award winning balloon artist, Jenny Murphy. Murphy, originally an auctioneer by trade, likes to joke that she has gone from working in the “inflated industry to the inflation industry” setting up the first incarnation of her shop, Red Balloon, in 2009. “Originally we were

a gift shop but the balloon side of the business kept getting more and more popular, and we were outgrowing the shop space wise. When you start inflating balloons, the space starts getting very small, very quickly. In fact on one occasion my electrician called in, and he’s a tall guy but he couldn’t see me due to the volume of balloons I was working on, so he suggested it might be time for a change”, she laughs. This change in direction (and subsequently a change in location) spurred Murphy on to become a certified balloon artist who has undergone significant training to achieve the high standards
of her award winning work. “I’ve trained in Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, and the States. In fact I go to the States every year to brush up on my training,” says Murphy. To become one of just 2,000 certified balloon artists in the world, Murphy undertook a gruelling five–hour practical exercise along with a written exam to gain her internationally recognised qualification two years ago. Her hard work has certainly paid off, as she and her designs recently won five awards at FLOAT, the international balloon convention held at the start of continued on page 46

Cork company defies convention
continued from page 45 February in St Louis, Missouri. Murphy scooped the first three awards for work already submitted; where she won Best Seasonal Décor for her set on RTÉ’s Today show for Valentine’s Day 2014; Best Parade or Festival for her display at the Cork Midsummer Festival and Best Wedding Décor for her work at Liss Ard Estate in Skibbereen. For her solo entry in the Centrepiece Design category, Murphy submitted a display featuring hand painted balloons. This unique and not to mention time consuming skill caught the judges eyes and they awarded her second place. Murphy’s most ambitious undertaking at the convention saw her head up a team of international balloon artists for the Large Sculpture category and submit a display comprised completely of foil balloons. The display depicted a boat on rough seas called ‘Sail Away With Me’. She is particularly proud of her eventual third placing in the category: “large sculptures are usually made out of latex balloons not
“Our imagination is our only limitation.” foil so it was a real challenge, but we did it, it also meant a very late night and an early start” she laughs. Despite her recent successes in competition, Murphy is putting the travelling on hold for the time being, deciding not to go on the road again until Spring 2016 for the next FLOAT convention in New Orleans. There is a European convention coming up in May but for Murphy attendance is not on the cards, “it clashes with the times for communions and to be honest you want to be there for the customer who is watching Red Balloon all year and waiting for their own big occasion” she explains. Murphy clearly relishes the demands involved in creat-
ing her own, and especially her customers’ visions. “If you have an idea and want someone to bounce it off, give us a shout, we’re always up for a challenge — we really do thrive on it, our imagination is our only limitation.” In fact Murphy will not give up on a task not matter how difficult it may seem at first glance. “A lot of the time when people ask for a specific display, I’ll tell them I might not be able to do it right now but I’ll ask them to let me sleep on it, and more often than not I’ll wake up with a vision in my head and I’ll have found a way around it.” Murphy admits that she acquired a lot of her skills through perseverance on the spot while working on difficult projects “If it’s a new skill, I’ll learn how do it as I’m working on a display” she says. One of her more ambitious recent tasks was to create an 18ft wall of balloons floor to ceiling for a Cork company featuring their logo. She and her team also played a big part in last year’s 21st anniversary Gay Pride festivities, which saw the streets of Cork thronged with people
bedecked in a kaleidoscopic array of rainbow coloured balloons. “Pride was so much fun, it was an honour to be involved and to get a spot on the Cork Chamber’s lorry” she says. Red Balloon’s success continues to go from strength to strength and Murphy currently employs four part time staff so as to be open seven days a week to accommodate her customers’ needs. “There are babies born every day and every day is someone’s birthday, so we like to be able to celebrate these milestones for our customers” she highlights, “our best accolade is happy customers and we’re always expanding what we can do.” With a Valentines’ Day that saw Red Balloon sell out of their “Love Monkey” displays, the operation of a daily delivery service to both the CUH and the CUMH (baby balloon bouquets are proving particularly popular in 2015) and the admittance that the company will be busy for all the big occasions throughout the year, it’s safe to say that for Murphy and her team 2015 is sure to be a ‘soaring’ success.

Cork–based Firebird Heating Solutions have defied the misconception that oil generated heating devices cannot achieve high Building Energy Rating. Firebird, the leading heating solutions provider in Ireland and the UK, have released the results of tests which show that their oil– fired equipment can achieve at least an A3 rating in dwellings. A BER assessment is designed to determine the heat efficiency of the dwelling and in turn save householders money on their fuel bills. The ratings have generated significant discussions over the last year since the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations came into effect in March 2014, mandating a BER assessment. Firebirds engineers have achieved at least an A3 rating with their total heating solution combinatino of Firebird
oil boiler, solar thermal and smoke–exempt wood burning dry stove. Liam Maddock, Technical Manager Firebird said “we are all aware that the regulations require us to build more energy conscious houses with respect to insulation, heating and orientation. At Firebird, we are confident that we are the best in our oil heating industry in Ireland and that we have the best products to give you the heat you need when you need it”. With Firebird’s vast range of products, the householder has access to a choice that will still enable them to achieve high BER ratings and therefore lower fuel bills based around a perfect compromise between tried–and–tested and new technology, with the company’s technological innovation leading the way to the future of oil–based home heating.

Braise be!
B
risket, which comes from where the chest would be if cattle stood upright, is rarely fatty but, because it’s responsible for holding the animal up and moving its front legs, usually very tough. That’s led to it falling out of favour a little in recent years, but as slow cooking makes a comeback it’s the perfect cut of meat for someone who’s got time and patience and fancies showing off while saving a little money at the butcher’s shop.
This recipe really showcases the cut, resulting in a super– tasty big serving of meat with very little waste. Be aware though; it will take three days to get through all of this! The recipe calls for beef but if you’re feeling extra fancy then venison brisket (if you can find it) is an indulgent, luxurious, extra–tasty substitute. Ingredients SERVINGS: 12 • 6 garlic cloves • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 tablespoon ground cumin • 1 tablespoon paprika • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper • ¼ cup sea salt/kosher salt (at least!) • 1 8–10lb untrimmed flat– cut beef brisket • 2 onions, thinly sliced • 350ml (a little over half a pint) of good, flavoursome beer; try Eight Degrees Howling Gale or Amber Ella ales.
MOTHER’S DAY BOOK NOW OPEN FOR DINNER FROM 5.30 PM
Preparation • Finely chop garlic in a food processor, then add the brown sugar, mustard, oil, black pepper, cumin, paprika, cayenne, and salt and whirr it all together until it’s a smooth mixture. Rub this all over your brisket, working into crevices, and keep rubbing for five or six minutes after you think you’re finished, in order to tenderise the outer layer a little and ensure that it penetrates nice and deep. Wrap your coated brisket in plastic and pop it in the fridge to chill for two days.
• On the day you’re going to cook it, take your brisket out of the fridge nice and early and let it get up to room temperature. This will take at least one hour, and probably a bit more. It shouldn’t be cool to the touch. • Preheat oven to 160° C. Scatter the onions in a large roasting pan and set the brisket, fat side up, on top. Add the beer and cover with foil. Braise until the meat is very tender, which will take about six hours. Remove it from the oven and let it sit while you heat your grill.
• Grill the brisket, uncovered, until the top is browned and crisp; that should take five to ten minutes. Ideally, you’d flame grill or barbecue your meat to brown it, as shown in the photo, but it might be another month or two before that’s practical! • Let the meat cool slightly, then remove from the pan and shred or slice. Remove onions with a slotted spoon and mix with the shredded meat. If it tastes a little dry moisten with some of the cooking liquid and season with more salt, if needed.

Oh, honey! It’s still sniffle season, and lots of people in Cork are still complaining of stuffed noses and sore throats. One of the oldest salves for a scratchy throat is honey, and it’s not just an old wives’ tale, either. Honey is an incredibly effective antiseptic, and is so good at inhibiting bacterial action that food buried in honey centuries ago, as well as an-
cient honey itself, is often still edible. You don’t even have to spash out on fancy manuka honey, even though it’s worth it if you do. A few spoonfuls of any honey will do you a world of good, as it lyses the nasty bugs in your throat and kills them on contact. One word of warning: honey is not suitable for children under the age of 18 months.

Paint the town pink Over a thousand participants raised over €50,000 for Cancer Research at Kinsale’s Pink Ribbon Walk. Picture by: John Allen.
Almost 1,100 walkers and runners raised over €50,000 (and counting) on the fourth Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk last weekend. Defying an initially wet start to form a sea of smiling faces and pink cloth-
ing, the crowd filled the west Cork town as the sun eventually came out and highlighted the sheer scale of the effort. The Pink Ribbon Walk is a national fundraising initiative which organises sponsored
charity walks in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. This year’s total will bring Kinsale’s contribution to Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society, to almost €350,000.
CAA on excellent shortlist The Cork Association for Autism (CAA) has been shortlisted for a Fundraising Team of the Year award, with the winner being announced at the National Awards for Excellence in Fundraising 2015 ceremony in Dublin on March 26th. The CAA provides support for adults on the Autism spectrum throughout Cork. Last year funds were raised to cover the cost of essential building and repair work at their service centres in Carrigtwohill and Mogeely. Funds raised also went towards purchasing new vehicles to transport clients. The CAA needs
23 year old Jessica Lyne is a new woman. Less than a year ago she weighed 16 stone, was self–conscious and always exhausted, with constant migraines and back pain. Today she is a svelte size 10; fit, strong, healthy and full of energy having trained using Educogym’s remarkable Time Machine, which peaked her metabolism to achieve bigger results over less time than would even have been thought possible a few years ago, “I used to be mortified going shopping for flowy clothes to cover my shape. I’d be miserable, then go home and eat a whole pizza”, says Jessica. “I saw photos of people who joined Educogym; the results they got in only 20 minutes a day. I work full time but anybody can commit to 20 minutes. “They designed a strict but practical eating plan and I popped in on the way home from work for my 20 minutes. After 12 days the difference was drastic! I’d lost nine pounds of fat, loads of inches and my shape was dramatically altered. My waist was way thinner, and so was my face — I couldn’t believe the difference. “I immediately signed up for the three month program and lost two and a half stone of fat. I lost more over the next three months, and in less than a year I’ve lost over four stone of fat. I have loads of lean muscle and my body has changed beyond recognition. “I went to my doctor last

“In less than a year I’ve lost over four stone of fat.” week and he couldn’t get over the difference. No more back pain, no more migraines. I feel fantastic. I never liked cardio, so weight training really suited me and it completely changes your figure. “The team at Educogym are
brilliant cheerleaders; we had such a laugh and they are incredibly friendly and supportive. I would never have gone to a normal gym; I was too intimidated and it takes too long. The Educogym program gets results fast, and you are so encouraged by what you see in the mirror. “It’s a no–brainer for busy people who want to see a difference fast. Best thing I’ve ever done.” €189 for the Educogym 12 day program. 20 minutes a day. It works. Why wait another minute? Call them now on 021 450 5355 or 021 486 6920. Best Buddies: country camping for your best friend With ten years of experience working closely with Irish Guide Dogs For The Blind — who regularly avail of their services — Séamus and Betty Rochford know what it takes to keep a dog happy. If you need to get away for a few day but have to make sure your pet is in the best of hands, you dog can enjoy a holiday of his or her own in their very own spacious, comfy kennel at their Best Buddies Boarding Kennels in Ovens. Of course, dogs from the same family can share a kennel if they would prefer. “Best Buddies” dogs love their stay in the country, with all the fresh air and freedom of the countryside during daily walks or while relaxing in their own individual runs.
They’ll also get ample time to play with their new friends in a supervised environment and will never be lonely as Séamus and Betty know that the secret ingredient for a happy
dog is lots of love and attention. Call 021 743 2888 or 087 206 7027 to arrange a home away from home for your best friend!

Parenting can be tough enough at the best of times, especially if it’s your first time around! Luckily, the information age has made it much easier to ask questions and get the important answers, as well as tips from people who’ve been there and done
Here comes the groom
Most dogs love being groomed: to them it feels like a long, luxurious session of being petted and at the end of it their coat will be clean, shiny and knot and tangle free, which is great for their skin. Cork’s Animal Care Hospital, at the Fingerpost in Douglas, has a professional groomer on site, with a choice of simple wash and blow dry or full groom for your pet in a dedicated grooming area. Best of all, you can book an appointment for your pup
and drop them off on your way to work, confident that they’ll be treated like royalty for the day. The Animal Care Hospital also provides free weight clinics and nutritional advice to help you ensure your pet is as fit and healthy as possible — great news, as pet obesity is becoming a big problem in Ireland. Call them on 021 4893033 to find out more. We don’t always have as much time as we’d like to get our pets to the beauty parlour, however, and that’s where
Páraic Sheridan comes in. He’s a mobile groomer, and has been since 2008. Páraic absolutely loves his work, and became a dog groomer right after leaving school. “I have been involved with dogs all my life,” he says, “and I have a wealth of experience with all breeds, coat types and personalities. My business is only as good as my last groom and the wellbeing of your dog is paramount.” Contact Páraic in his mobile grooming van on 087 964 1115.

Going Places 6 March 2015
Make it to Mallorca We’ve decided that we’re going to take a badly needed one–week city break soon probably towards the end of March or the start of April, and we’re hoping for lots of relaxing, a bit of history and culture, good food, and maybe one or two nights on the town. Oh, and it has to be sunny! And beautiful. And not too expensive, please. Any thoughts? Thanks, Dave and Marian
I
t sounds like you could do with a brief trip to the Mediterranean. The weather really starts to pick up there in March and although it’s not swelteringly hot yet you ought to be very comfortable, especially in comparison with Cork, and it’ll be very sunny at this time of the year.
You have a lot of choice, of course, particularly as it’s still off season. Given your list of demands, it sounds like Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, might be just what you’re looking for. Mallorca is about the size of County Cork and has a huge variety of landscapes, towns and villages. The island only has one city, the capital: Palma. At its heart, Palma is an ancient town, built up in layers from the Romans to the Moors to the Catalans and Spaniards. The centre, fanning out in a maze of tiny streets from La Seu, or the city’s famous Cathedral, is a classic example of a caompact Mediterranean city. Palma is also a perfect base for seeing the rest of the island, as it’s a hub for trains
and buses, but if you really want to stretch your legs and see as much as possible then you’re much better off hiring a car. Be prepared for confusing roads in the city though, and a somewhat liberal interpretation of road etiquette once you get out into the rest of the island! Palma airport is very well serviced with car hire options, but a bit of online hunting, especially in March, can turn up some fantastic bargains, with cars available from as little as €8 a day if you play your cards right. Don’t forget to haggle! In Palma, you’ll find a huge variety of bars and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for complete opulent luxury, and have a budget to match, you have to visit Abajo. It’s one of the best and most ex-
clusive cocktail bars in the Mediterranean, located in the La Lonja district just across the road from the cathedral and the amazing Almudaina Palace museum, originally built by the Muslim governors of the island. Abajo is cavernous inside, with huge piles of fresh fruit just waiting to be used to make some delicious drinks. Nearby is tiny Bar Dia, a family– owned café/bar with some of the best food in Mallorca, at amazingly low prices. The traditional shoulder of lamb is a culinary masterpiece. Also make a point to visit the gorgeous Arab Baths, one of the few parts of the old Muslim city to survive, near the impressive town walls. Es Born and the steep steps up to Plaça Major have some
high–end shops and more eating and drinking, along with impressive architecture, though not all of the bars and restaurants will be open at this time of the year. However, you’re less likely to have to battle your way through crowds! This also applies to the rest of the island, especially the remarkable north, with its spectacular cliffs and beaches, and the west, with imposing mountains and steep, winding roads. While touring around, be sure to visit Soller and Valldemossa, two remarkably beautiful seaside towns and home to some of the world’s richest and most famous. Be prepared for some steep climbs! As you make your way back down the west coast and around again to Palma, you’ll

come across the infamous resorts of Santa Ponça and Magaluf, but don’t let their reputations fool you. Yes, at the height of summer these are the places to go if you want to party hard, but they also have some great beaches and some quieter spots which will just be starting to re–open at the end of this month, and are well worth a look before thousands of British, Irish and German teenagers take them over for the high season. If they don’t quite float your boat, then drive back over Puigpunyent, the highest point of the island and home to some spectacular views, and make sure to visit Bellver Castle and park, just outside Palma, for a real taste of history and more smashing views.

Going Places
6 March 2015
Going places for Mothers Day Mothers Day is on the way, and if the weather is nice (and even if it isn’t) why not consider taking your mam on a little road trip to celebrate it? We Corkonians sometimes forget what living in the biggest county in Ireland actually means: it means we have a huge variety of things to see and places to go right in front of us. Why not stroll along Youghal’s long and lovely beaches? Or watch spring burst into life in Glenbower or Farran Woods? If you fancy a spot of shopping, why not head straight for the city, perhaps with a spot of browsing and lunch in the English market? Why not take in the beauty of Cobh or Kinsale? If the wilderness is more your thing, you can’t go wrong with the jagged coastline and majestic scenery further west, whether you feel like a bustling town experience somewhere like Clonakilty — and don’t you dare bring your mam to Clon without a stroll on Inchydoney! Or if you’re in the north, check out the history, cuisine and shopping in Fermoy, Mallow and Mitchelstown — you’ll both be glad you did.

Finger on the Pulsar
Nissan’s resurrected Pulsar hopes to take on the mighty Focus, the legendary Golf and the popular Astra, but does it have what it takes? Drive’s Seán Creedon finds out...
‘
A car for the lost generation.’ That was the buzz phrase used when Nissan launched their new Almera in Ardmore, County Waterford in November last year. The reason Nissan came up with this phrase is because the car, which replaces the Almera, marks their return to the ‘C’ segment after an eight– year absence. The Japanese company are taking on old
reliables like the Ford Focus, VW Golf, Toyota Auris, Opel Astra and Hyundai i30. It’s definitely a competitive segment to get back into and also the sector with the biggest volume of sales in Ireland. Nissan hopes that that they have their ‘finger on the pulse’ and are confident that this new hatchback with gain a seven to eight percent share of the Irish market this year. Jeanne McGann, Marketing
LEXUS CORK THE NEW NX. NOW AVAILABLE
Manager for Nissan, says they hope to recover some of the ‘lost generation’ with an attractive PCP offer where you can get a new Pulsar for €134 per month. PCP seems to be way to go for many people right now and in Britain, 30% of all new buyers opt for PCP, where you can change your car every three years, but will never own it. It’s generally accepted that Nissan’s Qashqai is the ‘king’
when it comes to motoring in Ireland, and the Pulsar does share some of the king’s mechanical and electrical parts. But it’s a much smaller car than the Qashqai and while it’s a big improvement on the old Almera, if you saw the two of them together you would know that they are related. I drove the 1.5 diesel version and it was very quiet. It was also very comfortable and relaxing to travel in. My back seat passengers commented on the huge amounts of leg and head room they had. On the drive to Ardmore last November I thought the dash and rest of the interior were too dark. They say first impressions are lasting and four months on I haven’t changed
my mind but then, as my son reminded, me the interiors of most cars nowadays are all very dark. The stats from SIMI show that after two months of very brisk trade the Pulsar is in the top 20 of best selling cars in 2015. The version I drove had an excellent reversing camera. Although it’s not an extremely long car it’s always nice to know what’s behind you when reversing. The boot is a decent size and you get a mini spare wheel. Prices start at €19,995 for the 1.2 petrol. However, Nissan expects the 1.5 diesel, which starts at €21,595, to be the big seller in Ireland. Road tax is €180 for diesel versions, €200 for petrol.
Every week on these pages I say that prices ‘start from’ and really it is a starting point, because there are so many extras that you may want or be coaxed into: metallic paint, fancy alloys, fog lights and so on. Really it’s a marketing ploy, which is adopted by all car companies to give you, the consumer, the lowest possible entry–level price. I found the Pulsar to be very lively and the fuel gauge is the slowest moving part of the whole car; the engine in 1.5 diesel version I drove was very frugal. Nissan has 39 dealers countrywide and five of those are in Cork. You can check out the new Pulsar at Keary’s, Kinsale Road roundabout, Fermoy Nissan and Luceys in Charleville.

The
Drive used car review
She is Titanium... Geraldine Fitzgerald gets fast and furious with the Ford Focus Titanium from CavanaghsMidleton
S
o the Editor really, really wanted to drive this week’s car. He went to get his coat and I was gone — hey; it’s dog eat dog in this business — swanning triumphant and solo into Cavanaghs of Charleville to take the much– heralded Ford Focus Titanium 2014 out for a burn. There’s been a lot of press about this car, as it has a secret weapon under the bonnet: the acclaimed Ford Ecoboost 1.0 litre petrol engine, which delivers a staggering 120 bhp with infinitesimal emissions and superb fuel economy. Every international motoring journalist who knows their chassis from their injector wrote about this engine;
it won International Engine of the Year three years in succession and is a testament to technology. The fact that it’s housed in a pretty cool one–off Focus Titanium with many non–standard extras doesn’t hurt; this hatchback is icy Frozen White and is loaded with features. I was just about to hop in when lo and behold, the Editor comes screeching into the car park and jumps into the passenger seat shouting “Go go go!”. I think he may have watched The Fast And The Furious last night. I’m a fan of keyless starts; and this Ford has everything a busy person needs from Bluetooth connectivity; climate and cruise control; electronic mirrors; iPod, MP3 and USB Ports; rear parking
sensors; smart wipers; stop/ start technology and Xenon headlights. It handles like a dream; cornering sweetly and pulling a lot of power out of the clever little engine. I’m not even mad when the Editor makes me pull over so he can have a go. For all his talk he drives like a granny. New, this hot hatch retails at €28,750, and with only 12,000kms up, it can be your personal movie star car for a mere €22,750. Give Shane Collins at Cavanaghs of Charleville a ring on 063 30352 or 086 306 2105. Mention my name. Don’t say anything about the Editor; he’s just settling down with a nice cup of Horlicks. Visit cavanaghs.com to find out more.
Passat: It’s prime The Volkswagen Passat, one of Ireland’s most popular cars for decades, has been awarded the European Car of the Year 2015 award by a considerable margin ahead of its nearest rival. “We are delighted to see the Passat claim what is the most prestigious international title in the motoring calendar,” said Paul Burke, Operations Direc-
tor of Volkswagen Ireland. “We have seen huge demand for the car since it launched in January.” The Passat GTE — the first Passat to feature a plug-in hybrid drive — will arrive at Volkswagen dealerships in Cork — Blackwater Motors and Newmarket Motors — in late 2015. The 1.4-litre TSI engine develops a power of
156 PS; the electric motor produces 8115 PS, with maximum torque of 400 Nm. Fuel consumption will be is less than 2.0 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of less than 45 g/km: in other words, over 1,000 kilometres with a full 50-litre tank and fully charged battery. The standard Passat costs €27,295 or from €329 per month on PCP.
Tivoli ticks the right boxes South Korea’s Ssangyong may have a slightly strange name and have had its share of blunders in the past (remember the original Rodius, one of the worst cars ever built?), but they’re coming back with a vengeance in the second half of the twenty–teens. This is exemplified in their decision to
name their newest small SUV after part of Cork. Okay, the Tivoli may not be named after the docks by the Silversprings, but it’s certainly a step up for the manufacturer, known for their hit–and–miss design philosophy. On the outside the B–segment car is definitely still a member of

the same family as, say, the Korando or the Rexton, but as you can see here, the design of of the interior has taken a giant leap forward. The Tivoli will be coming to Cork at the beginning of the summer, and you can take it for a spin courtesy of Cashman Car Sales in Midleton.

Car sales continue to climb February’s figures for motor sales in Cork show that the industry continues to put in a strong showing for the first quarter of 2015, in line with encouraging national figures. New car sales for the second month of the year outstripped 2014’s by a factor of 25%, with nearly 16,000 new cars sold nationally, compared to fewer than 13,000 this time last year. Combined with
strong January sales, that means that nearly one third more cars have been sold in the first two months of 2015 than were sold by the same point in 2014. As new car sales tend to be a reliable barometer for the economy in general, the current trend is very encouraging. Commenting on the figures, AnnMarie Seaman of Dan Seaman Motors on Forge
Hill told The Cork News “It’s fantastic to see an increase in new car sales in February. Our showroom traffic is ever increasing with genuine buyers who have thoroughly researched their new vehicle. The FIAT Panda and FIAT Punto are really holding their own and we have found the upgraded Mitsubishi ASX and the Pajero 5 Seater to be popular.”

a difficult pre–season, manager John Caulfield isn’t concerned with form: “Nothing is won pre–season,” he said, “I’m confident that we can rise to the challenge.”
With the side struggling for goals, new signing Gavin Holohan hopes to contribute: “I hope I can hit double figures, but the collective success of the team is the main aim,” he said.

Cork play Kerry in ‘vital’ league match The Cork footballers this Sunday host Kerry in Páirc Uí Rinn in round four of the Allianz Football League. Having lost away to Donegal last weekend, midfielder Mark Collins notes the im-
portance of the match against the All–Ireland champions, who were this week boosted by Paul Galvin’s return to inter-county football: “Especially with the four trips up north this year, these
home trips are absolutely vital for us. “If we can get two points, it might make us safe in the league,” he told The Cork News. Throw-in is at 2pm.

Play Pushing all the right buttons 6 March 2015
Pádraig Rynne is one of Ireland’s foremost musicians and composers. Play’s Maureen Sullivan caught up with the eclectic Trad and world music explorer.
P
ádraig Rynne made his mark as a concertina player at an early age, winning several All-Ireland titles. By the age of 17, he was already on the international touring circuit. Born in 1980, in the little village of Lissycasey outside Ennis, he grew up in a family of musicians in an area steeped in traditional music. “My father was an accordion player. I used to tag along to music sessions with him when I was young,” said Rynne. Accompanying his father to these live music get-togethers also exposed him to other talented musicians who encouraged him. One such influence was concertina player Paddy Murphy: “A lovely old gent. He used to let me take his concertina on my knee and mess around with it,” said Rynne. Rynne began his musical
odyssey on the tin whistle, and when it was time for him to progess to another instrument, the concertina was what he wanted. “My parents wanted me to take up the concert flute; it was cheaper than the concertina, but I was adamant,” he said. A lot of well– renowned players of the instrument came from the area and Rynne said that trend is set to continue: “It has become a really, really popular instrument in County Clare.” From a distance, the concertina looks like a miniature accordion but it is more complicated to play. “The concertina has buttons on each side that are used for melody, but the accordion has melody on one side only,” Rynne explained. “Learning to play the concertina is like learning to play a really difficult typewriter.” But he learned, and has been busy since, working on a long list of musical ac-
complishments that includes composing for, and playing with, some of the world’s finest performers. One collaboration that has captured the imagination of numerous audiences is the fusion of Rynne’s talent with that of iconic musician and producer Donal Lunny, and French musician Sylvain Barou – a flautist par excellence of Breton and Irish music. Collectively known as ‘Triad,’ the friends have created an original body of work that borrows from the musical traditions of places like Galicia in northern Spain and Brittany in France, and blends them with Eastern rhythms, contemporary pieces and of course, plenty of Irish trad. Rynne and Lunny brought their own compositions to the project and worked together to rearrange them to suit a three–piece band. This collaborative process raises the
“Learning to play the concertina is like learning to play a really difficult typewriter.” question of how a composer can remain open to other people’s input while retaining a sense of control over their own work. “The melody is where your ownership comes into play,” Rynne explained. “It’s what you’re emotionally attached to, so the melody tends to stay as it is. Then,
with the arrangement side of it you’re open to suggestion, and working with Donal and Sylvain, it can only get better.” In 2013, Triad released their eponymous album and have toured Europe since, with no signs of stopping anytime soon: “We haven’t ever planned too far ahead, but it’s like being in any other band: as long as people are interested (in listening), we’ll keep going,” said Rynne. He has played countless times in Cork and it’s something he always enjoys: “When you play in Cork, there’s banter with the audience. You’ll tell jokes here that you wouldn’t tell in other parts of the country. And there’s always a bit of craic after the gigs,” he said. Triad is just one of several projects that keep Rynne on a hectic schedule, which included a performance on Wednesday in Coughlan’s on Douglas Street with another
of his bands, ‘Notify.’ While Triad is a demonstration of Rynne’s prowess at interpreting world music, Notify is a complete departure. “The idea is to bring the Irish language to modern music. There’s a huge amount of experimentation involved; alot of electronics and sampling,” he said: “The feedback (from being on tour) is that the audience comes along with us, no matter how far we take it.” His observation raises the question of how he finds his way back from so many musical brinks to focus on the particular requirements of each project? “I treat them very differently,” he said. “You can’t compare them, in my eyes. It’s like turning a new page in a book.” Triad plays at the Triskel Arts Centre on Thursday, March 19th at 8pm. For further information and bookings, visit triskelartscentre.

Hello
To The Real Me
“ Being pregnant at a young age is hard but even harder when you gain so much weight, you feel very low in yourself and give up on hope that you will ever lose the weight. After a few weeks I went to Women's Fitness Plus for advice and from the second I walked in they were so helpful. There were tears and moments I wanted to give up but everyone made sure I got the results I wanted. Knowing that I can go into a clothes shop and not worry if their clothes will fit me is amazing. The gym and healthy eating are now my lifestyle and I don't think I could be happier.”
