Cork Dunnes workers who took part in last week’s strike are “genuinely scared…petrified” of being punished for striking, according to an employee at a Dunnes outlet in Cork. According to the employee, who agreed to speak to The Cork News under the condition of anonymity, Cork
workers who took part in the strike have been subject to punitive measures: “Those who took part in the strike have been made move department, and had their hours cut to the bare minimum of 15. People who had their lives organised around their shift, who would start at 9.30am so they could leave their children to school, are now scheduled for 7.30am,” she said. Under the terms of their
contracts, Dunnes workers are guaranteed 15 hours per week, although most work up to 30 hours weekly. “Hours are a great bargaining tool. Your pay can essentially be cut in half without the bat of an eyelid, with no reason given. The employee spoke of what she called a “bullying culture” in the outlet, with workers reluctant to question management figures for fear of having their hours cut. “We made a number of formal complaints to head office about bullying and…received a letter with two lines, saying continued on page 2
