“Stand firm!” nurses urged “They are not listening, and nurses are aggrieved.” By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

Cork’s nurses are being urged to stand firm in their opposition to a sharp hike in their retention fee, despite warnings they will not be able to work if they withhold payment. Nurses are obliged to pay the fee annually in order to be certified to work. Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) industrial relations officer for Cork Patsy Doyle highlighted concern among her fellow nurses in Cork in respect of the decision of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) to

increase the fee by 50%. The INMO, SIPTU and the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) have all advised their respective members to make no payment at this time, with support only for a retention fee of €100. “They are not listening to nurses, and the nurses are aggrieved about that,” said Ms Doyle, adding that a public protest taking place at NMBI headquarters next Tuesday, November 18th, will be “strongly” supported by Cork nurses. Ms Doyle stated that nurses have been “propping up a creaking health service for the last number of years”, adding that “it just seems that

no one in their camp respects them...these are people who are helping people come into the world, coping with serious illnesses and assisting them to leave the world with dignity,” she said. Ms Doyle added a letter sent this week from the NMBI to nurses and midwives held “no reflection of that”: “Perhaps looking from empathy from a bureaucratic body might be a bit aspirational but they should listen to the nurses, which perhaps they will do when they turn up in their droves next Tuesday,” she continued. continued on page 44 KK nov sale Cork News 161x126mm OCT 2014 placed.indd 1

All of the medical staff at Smile Store - The Dental Specialists, are trained to the highest standards.

Bring out the smiles, with Smile Store. Help when you need it “I was playing a match with our local team and I suffered an injury to my mouth. A hurley knocked out one tooth and broke another. My dentist said I’d have to wear a denture for the rest of my life – I was very unhappy with that idea, so I called Smile Store. I was really worried, but the staff at Smile Store calmed me down and explained how they could fix the problem. They were able to put a crown on the broken tooth, and they put a dental implant with a temporary crown where the tooth got knocked out. After my gum healed I went back for my

permanent zirconia crown, which they fitted on top of the implant. They matched it perfectly with my own teeth, so you’d never know I had a sports injury. I was delighted with them; nice people and very good value.” Stephen L., Bandon Stephen was a relatively straightforward case for Smile Store. As Cork’s largest and highest -volume practice, great value implants and perfectly matched crowns are all in a day’s work for the team. This next case was more complex, and John was nervous about having treatment after spending years without seeing a dentist.

Smile Store – The Dental Specialists provide their patients with the widest array of dental services under one roof, at prices you can afford. They offer savings of up to 67% over average local costs, and up to 20% over foreign treatments. Geraldine Fitzgerald interviewed some of their patients to see just how affordable and accessible Smile Store make complex dental work for people.

Life - changing treatments – it’s never too late

“I didn’t take good care of my teeth when I was a boy, so I developed abscesses and cavities. Back then pulling teeth out was the only option at the dentist. I was young and frightened. He pulled out four teeth from the sides of my mouth and ever since I’ve always held my smile in because you can see the gaps if I smile properly. 25 years later I was very nervous of dentists, and quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth. I had just given up on them really. It was my wife who told me she read about dental implants but I had a

do it all. I was a bit sore for a couple of days but it was well worth it; I’m a new man and the value was excellent. It was far easier to get to Togher than to Hungary!” John B., Rochestown

My wife looked up the fees at Smile Store and sent me right in. They were so friendly and relaxed; I didn’t feel they were judging me for neglecting my teeth; they just wanted to make me feel better about my smile.

John discovered the value at Smile Store before taking the risk of seeking treatment abroad, and is now smiling with confidence. Why take the chance of rushed treatments and no follow-up care when you can get everything you need close to home, and for better value?

I got a treatment plan with all the prices included and it was even cheaper than going abroad. I got four implants done – I needed a couple of root canals as well and they were able to

Excellent prices are just one of the benefits of going to an all specialists practice with the most modern technology at their disposal – Smile Store’s expertise, experience and in-house equipment allow them to perform complex surgery on patients who have been turned away elsewhere, as Miriam and David were thrilled to discover.

Ground breaking 3D technology gives patients hope “My husband David and I have worn dentures for many years and they slide around quite a lot; mine are worse than his and although I tried keeping them in place with denture cement I was never comfortable. Our dentist said as we had been missing teeth for so long that neither of us had enough bone left in our jaws for dental implants- we were so disappointed. David read about the surgeon at Smile Store who takes people who’ve been turned down elsewhere. We met with Dr. Kadar and he used a special scanner to see how much bone we had. He explained he could augment it, building it up enough to hold implants. David went first and he got bone material put in where he needed it; once it had merged in with his jaw he got implants that support new dentures; he just clicks them on and they are completely secure.

I got a specially designed bone block made; after that was put in and healed I got implants and the same click-in dentures. They look amazing and because they are attached to the implant inside the jaw they can’t move around, so they feel totally natural. We can eat whatever we want now without panicking about dentures falling out or getting stuck in food. The kids were worried that we’d spent our retirement moneywe didn’t, because Smile Store prices were vastly better than anywhere else – but we might spend it on a few five star cruises instead! We plan on enjoying every minute of life.” David and Miriam N., Douglas At their all-specialist practice, Smile Store can help everybody no matter what they need. They offer general dentistry, all kinds of braces and aligners; cosmetic work, dental implants; crowns; bridges; dentures and more. See what Smile Store – The Dental Specialists can do for you. Three...two...one....LIFT OFF!

Editor’s letter

A

s I started to write this letter, the skies darkened and the first hailstones of the winter clattered against my window. I could hear screeches and some unprintable expletives from Carey’s Lane below, along with the clack of shoes on cobbles as people ran for cover. Every year, the Irish experience with winter weather is a testament to the triumph of optimism over experience. I’m prepared to bet actual cold (no pun intended) hard cash that not a single one of the scurriers below had an umbrella with them. I don’t. I don’t even have a raincoat. This is all by way of prelude to a firm rebuttal of something that I’ve heard people talking about with increasing dread over the last few days: the Beast From The East. If, like me, you presumed this was an intimidating nickname for Russia’s expansionist, hardnosed leader Vladimir Putin then think again, though it’s been such a media buzzword for the past week that I’m sure you’ve been disabused of that notion at this stage. The Beast From The East is a hyped-up, suitably dangerous-sounding name for what we would otherwise call “a bit of a chilly breeze that’s on the way”. The news that the weather is about to get colder for the next month or two seems to have come as an immense shock to people, and some are so horrified that (admittedly this is hearsay on my part but it comes from a good source) they’re stocking up on padded clothing and provisions more suited to an Antarctic expedition than a few seasonably cold and windy days in the Rebel County. It is November. Several things happen in Cork each and every November, without exception. The Christmas shopping season gets underway. The Christmas lights are switched on. Christmas parties take place and we schmooze with our colleagues in ways which are sure to provide office banter for the next 12 months. The weather goes from “mostly tolerable” to “ah god, why didn’t I wear a better coat?”. The only shocker about the incipient cold and gales is that people are shocked at all. Yes, the wind is coming from Siberia. No, this is not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. It’s prudent to winterproof your house and your car, and important to check up on elderly relatives and neighbours, but the barely-contained dread isn’t warranted. Calm down; it’s only a bit of weather. Moving on from eastern beasts (and if that struck a chord with you then be sure to turn to page 13 for more of the same from George Hook), this week one of humanity’s most significant scientific achievements ever took place. We, a crowd of delicate bald apes equipped with great big brains and enormous imaginations, managed to hit a rock travelling faster than a speeding bullet, and nearly twice as far from us as the sun, with a tiny, delicate box of tricks in a testament to the ingenuity, dedication and teamwork which are the hallmarks of our species. Philae made a sevenhour trip through space and landed gracefully and delicately on a smooth-ish patch of the rubber-duck-shaped Comet 67P. It attached itself to the dusty surface of one of the oldest objects in the solar system and sent a simple message back to Earth: “I’m here. Everything is great. We did it!” That, to me, is far more worthy of awe than any eastern beast, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I giggled like a schoolchild at the thought of it, and when I saw the absolutely magnificent rendering of the comet compared to Cork City which Darren Forde sent to us and which I’m delighted to bring to you in this week’s issue - along with plenty more besides! We had a great time getting this edition of The Cork News together, and we hope you enjoy it.

“My biggest regret is not opening up sooner” Cork woman’s video on depression goes viral By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

A Ballinlough student who revealed her battle with depression through an online video that’s gone viral has said she regrets “not opening up sooner” about her mental health issues. 21-year-old Linda Creedon, who’s studying general nursing at University College Cork, and is a part-time model who won Miss Tipperary earlier this year, has almost 100,000 views of a video she posted for UCC mental health week. In the short piece, she outlines her own struggles with mental health. “My biggest regret is not opening up sooner,” she said. “I think what happened

to me wouldn’t have escalated to the extent that it did if I had spoken about it. I just hope this conveys to people to go and get help. It’s not necessarily about being unable to get out of bed in the morning, it could be just feeling low for a number of days.” Linda stated that her own battle with depression came from internalisation. “I always had a personality that I would be very sensitive to things,” she said. “That’s the way I am, that’s the way I’m built. There’s nothing you can do about that. “However, over the years I stored everything away and if I had a problem with anyone I wouldn’t be the one to address it, I wouldn’t be the one to rock the boat.

“I built that up for such a long time, and with the added pressure of the Leaving Certificate, college and exams, I used to get down, sad and very anti-social. Then one day, it just made sense in my head to actually go and get help for it. “My life has improved so dramatically, and I’m a different person now and much stronger. However, after hearing a lot on the news about suicide rates going up and teenage depression I felt there was a need for someone to come out and relate to people of my own age.” Linda outlined it was a “difficult decision” to put the video out in the public domain but that it was “necessary” to be open about mental illness so other young people can be too. “When people think of mental illness, they conjure up an idea of someone who has been through a huge trauma, something awful happening in their lives. People have an image in

their head of what someone suffering from mental illness looks like, but it can happen to anyone. I have a brilliant family and boyfriend, I’m constantly out and about, and for someone looking at me, they would probably say they couldn’t see any reason for me to be depressed. But it can be kept so well hidden, and only come out when you’re home by yourself,” she said. Linda added that young women and girls have contacted her about the video, with a 12-year-old girl among those impacted by her message. “It’s frightening to think that people are so young and going through this,” she said. “Young people these days are being bombarded with messages and images and even if you turn off the computer, there’s the phone. You can never truly escape unless you lock yourself in a room but that’s not good for you either.”

Cork’s nurses will protest new fee structures continued from page 1 However, the NMBI says the Health Service Executive has confirmed that it will not be in a position to employ nurses and midwives without their annual retention certificate. “It is the profes-

sional and legal responsibility of nurses and midwives engaged in practice under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011 to have their name entered on the active register,” said the NMBI in a statement. “Failure by nurses and midwives to pay the 2015 annual retention fee in full

by January 1st 2015 means NMBI will not be able to update their registration and will be unable to issue an annual retention certificate to them. “It is illegal to practise if removed from the register for non-payment of the annual retention fee. Full payment

of the annual retention fee is required to have a valid registration certificate” concluded the statement. Should no resolution be reached before January, the legal status of nurses in Cork may come into question, which could lead to significant operational difficulties for the health service.

Cork City versus Comet 67P

By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie This week saw the successful placement of the tiny Philae lander on one of the two lobes

of comet 67P/Churyumov– Gerasimenko. The occasion of humanity’s first-ever physical encounter with a comet was marked by artists around the world superimposing the “flying mountain” over several of

the planet’s major cities. Now, thanks to photographer Daren Forde, it’s Cork’s turn. Forde has shown what would happen if the famed comet in the ambitious mission landed by the banks of the Lee. He outlined

that the idea came from the ESA, who released a set of images to compare the size of the comet with a number of cities across Europe. “Sadly they neglected Cork, so I had to rectify that,” he laughed. “I had a pho-

tograph of the city that I took a couple of months back, and I thought it would be a good image to use. It’s more or less to scale of what would happen if the comet did land.” The celestial object would

stretch from the Carrigrohane Road to Pairc Uí Chaoimh. “It’s a 3D picture of the comet basically superimposed onto Cork. The bottom half is missing, so there is about a quarter of it underground in this picture.”

that we are investigating and is much more a longterm thing, about 18 to 24 months out. It takes a long time to build the technology and structures around that,” said Ms Keating. She added the forum is about those who are active in the city “working together to bring the best of what we have to offer to our local and international visitors”. Forum member and English Market trader Pat O’Connell stated a “key issue” is the parking situation in the city, and “trying to improve the communications to make people more aware of the deals on offer from the Q-Park sites and the City Council Christmas parking offers”. “If the forum can create stronger working relationships with Cork City Council leading to more positive results for traders I am all for it,” he said.

A table stretching the length of Oliver Plunkett Street where chefs will prepare and cook food is being proposed for next summer as part of a new focus on innovative ideas to drive footfall into the city centre. The Cork City Centre Forum, made up of retailers and business owners along with Cork City Council, An Garda Síochána and representative business organisations, is to look at new ways to promote Cork. Cork Chamber president and forum chair Gillian Keating outlined a long-table dinner event is planned for Oliver Plunkett Street for June next year, and while the project is still in the early stages, it’s expected that restaurants and bars in the city will get

involved, “preparing and serving food on a long table”. Other initiatives proposed include qualification for Purple Flag accreditation to show that Cork is both a safe and an entertaining place to socialise and visit in the evening time, from 5pm to 5am. “It will give a clear message that firmly says there are things happening in the city, and that Cork is a safe clean environment in the evening time,” said Ms Keating. Seen as the “gold standard” for town and city centres at night, the Purple Flag accreditation can be used to attract national and international visitors to the city. A Customer Service Charter, which will make the city identifiable as a friendly place to visit and shop, along with the cashless city initiative are also proposed. “The cashless city project is something

Clean up organised for Beaumont Quarry A clean up of a disused limestone quarry in Cork is to take place this weekend. Beaumont Quarry, which ceased operations in the 1960s, has since been used by local residents for recreation purposes and is also a habitat that encourages butterflies, bats, birds and other wildlife. For that reason, the Irish Wildlife Trust Cork branch holds regular clean ups at the site, including one this Saturday, November 15th at 10.30am. Gloves, hi-vis vests, bags and litter pickers will be provided, with the group meeting by the SPAR shop on Beaumont Drive, and all are welcome.

Corkman claims Social Entrepreneurs Ireland prize Killeagh-based Active Connections will benefit to the tune of €30,000 after founder Raymond Burke was named as a Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Elevator Award winner at a ceremony in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin earlier this week. As a social care worker in Ireland and someone who had spent some time in a leadership role with an adventurebased therapy company in the United States, Mr. Burke spotted the potential for a social enterprise in his native country, and has worked with young people in Cork, Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford since setting up the organisation. Adventure therapy involves combining physically and psychologically-demanding activities, often carried out in a group setting, with a significant emphasis on proper and meaningful engagement. Participants are

challenged to become aware of their negative behaviours and to address their thought processes in a supportive environment, which also provides training and assistance to guardians and carers. Demonstrating the impact the programme can make to the lives of those involved, Mr. Burke recalled the story of one 10-year-old boy. “When he first came to Active Connections he had severe behavioural issues,” he explained. “We worked with him intensively over an eight month period which was far longer than usual. Then one evening he turned around and said ‘you won’t be working with me next month’ because he realised what progress he had made and that he didn’t need us anymore. It was a really special moment. “The fact that Social Entrepreneurs Ireland looked at our programme and recognises the work that we are

doing is a wonderful affirmation for Active Connections. It confirms further that we are making as big an impact as we think we are,” he added. With a motto that reads: ‘Adventure can change lives’, Active Connections has delivered its adventure therapy programme to 30 young people, helping with issues ranging from attention deficit disorder to suicidal behaviour. Reduced recurring negative behaviours and more care placements maintained overall are just two measures contributing to a success rate of 92%. Ultimately, however, the programme has also eliminated the need for more expensive, long-term interventions for some. Nine different social enterprises from around the country were awarded €600,000 in total, with nearly €6 million handed out by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland over the last ten years.

Celia Holman Lee shares her experience of life-changing eye surgery Stunning style icon; television presenter and fashionista extraordinaire Celia Holman Lee was frustrated. She looks nowhere near her age, though she makes no secret of her 63 years, but one thing had fallen victim to the march of time – her eyesight. “I lost my ability to see things up close, and became completely reliant on reading glasses”, says Celia. “It really drove me nuts. I couldn’t read my phone, no matter how big the font was; I even had trouble putting on eye makeup using a magnifying mirror - sometimes I had to try to do it wearing the glasses!” Celia was experiencing an eye problem that happens to just about everybody over the age of 40: it’s ageing of the eye, known as Presbyopia. The muscles that usually squeeze the lens in the eye into shape, to allow you to see objects close up, become stiff and don’t work as well anymore. Most people notice they have to hold printed material at arm’s length, away from their face, in an attempt to see it clearly - this is a dead giveaway for Presbyopia. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had laser eye surgery before, or if you’ve had perfect vision all your lifePresbyopia is inevitable! Celia’s work in visual media meant she had no choice but to rely on her glasses to see. “Don’t get me started about those glasses”, she laughs. “Every day without fail I’d put them down somewhere in the office and everyone would have to hunt madly for them, or I’d leave them behind in restaurants, or lose them at the bottom of my bag and be fishing around frantically.”

Celia Holman Lee at the launch of the Presbia treatment, delighted to finally get rid of her reading glasses co-ordinated - having to add a pair of glasses to your ensemble presents an irritating lack of freedom. “I’m not anti-glasses - I think a sexy pair can be a great accessory”, explains Celia “But it’s the dependency and being forced to wear them I didn’t like. You no longer have the element of choice, and for my job, looking good is vital - how can I give a style talk with glasses on? I’d be wearing them perched on the bridge of my nose; looking down at notes and then looking up and not being able to see beyond the front row of the audience. Up, down, up down- it was so annoying”.

It’s such a clever procedure, and now I can read my iPad; texts; computer; the newspaper apps on the phone - everything.

Mr Wayne Crewe Brown, Surgeon and Medical Director with his team at Optilase “I remember once I was doing fashion workshops at Brown Thomas and forgot themtotally stuck. What can I do from there? I couldn’t read anything; I was only looking at fuzzy pictures.” Even if you wear reading glasses, you can only see about a foot on front of you so have to keep taking them off to see at different distances. Then there’s the aesthetic issue- you’re dressed beautifully and every accessory has been carefully

A revolutionary eye surgery available at Optilase, called Presbia, can turn back the hands of time and allow people with near vision problems to see perfectly, without corrective eyewear. A microscopically thin disc is slipped into place over the cornea, and it works to gather all the light entering the eye; focusing it onto the retina to allow you to form a perfectly clear image. It only needs to be inserted into one eye, and your distance vision remains unaffected. “I was excited to hear Optilase had a solution to my near vision problem” says Celia. “I was apprehensive initially - you would be when it comes to your eyes - but the Optilase team were so meticulous in explaining every detail, step by

Celia Holman Lee visited Optilase for a free consultation step, that I was reassured. Surgeon Wayne Crewe Brown was very candid – he explained it doesn’t give you back the eyesight of your youth, but it takes away the dependency on glasses.” “I felt nothing other than a slight pressure during the procedure, and it’s so quick. There’s no bandages or anything- the only thing was I couldn’t wear eye makeup for 10 days after surgery, so I went to events anyhow and explained I’d just had Presbia surgery. People were fascinated!” “It’s such a clever procedure, and now I can read my iPad; texts; computer; the newspaper apps on the phone - everything. This tiny little thing in my eye has made a massive difference in my life.” To find out if you are eligible for this life-changing procedure, contact Optilase for a free consultation on 1890 301 302 or visit www.optilase.com

The Four Faced Liar speaks The Shandon Clock and its chimes have been successfully restored and reinstated after falling silent at the end of 2013. It was announced in May that funding had been ring-fenced by Cork City Council to repair the famous landmark, considered one of the iconic images of Cork, just days after the local authority stated that no money for the restoration would be available until 2015, prompting public outcry and a number of public fundraising initiatives. Now, the original historic ‘cage clock’ mechanism, built by Mangans of Cork in 1846, has been cleaned and repaired by local clock specialists Stokes Clocks & Watches Ltd under the supervision of the City Architect’s Department of Cork City Council. The accuracy of the clock is

now supported by an additional ‘electronic movement’, which will discreetly help to synchronise the clock tower’s famous four faces. The clock chimes have been ringing both hourly and quarterly and have now been declared fully functional after a probation period, reinstating the tolls that were a familiar sound throughout the Northside before the bells were stilled last year. External maintenance and repairs to the clock faces are proposed to follow on from this initial work on a phased basis over the coming years. Reaction to the synchronisation of the faces has been a little mixed, and older Corkonians say they fear the clock may lose some of its character – if not its nickname – because of it.

Hook uncorked We are becoming a nation of softies, spoiled and cosseted by modern conveniences and ruined by the 'quick fix', says a highly evolved George Hook. george@thecorknews.ie In tandem with the advances in toilet paper over the years, we have all been getting softer with time. Time was, when I was a lad, I could walk into a cubicle in a public house and wipe my backside with the front page of The Irish Express and I wouldn’t have given it a second thought. Today, my delicate posterior wouldn’t survive two aggressive scrubs with such coarse material without an inevitable outbreak of piles. No, today’s George Hook is pampered with lotions and oils to protect his sensitive buttocks from the horrors of rash and abrasion. I demand a certain standard of tissue on my derrière and I refuse to suffer an inferior product. My younger self would consider the present day Hook a snob and a wimp. But today, I am as rational and reasonable as the next alpha male. Society has universally shifted its standard of living from basic necessity to spoiled pomposity in a matter of decades and we are all the softer for it. I see it in my grandchildren. Much as I love and adore every hair on their heads, I cannot but wonder what the future will hold for them. Will they continue down the current path, where aversion to any form of risk supersedes the thrill of enjoyment, or will someone call a halt to the maddening feminisation of young boys and the increasing intolerance for testosterone in its purest form? As with every debate, there is a happy medium. But, in order to satisfy the middle tier or the balanced view, there must be someone willing to guard against a full scale abandonment of tradition and history. The protectors of those values are disappearing with every passing year. Ireland is fast catching up with the USA when it comes to insufferable levels of hysteria. I used to think that Americans were so far ahead

“Ireland is fast catching up with the USA when it comes to insufferable levels of hysteria.” of us on the political correctness scale that a relative par between us and them would be impossible in my lifetime. Yet here we are. Are we happier for it? Are we any better off? The everyday struggle, in its modern day format, is nothing more than a con. The hunter gatherer mindset of old has been replaced by a self-righteous sense of entitlement and with each advance in creature comforts, we are losing a little bit more of what makes us human. Soon, we will all be slaves to technology; impotent in the art of survival. What’s wrong with that? Well, lots of things actually. Because the more reliant we all become on the technology to simplify ordinary, everyday tasks, the more inept we become at the most basic life skills: conversation, faceto face interaction, relationships. There is a fundamental level of skill that every person should acquire to be adequately resourced in the art of survival. But with each new development in short cuts and fast tracks, we are leaving these basic skills behind.

Let me give you some examples. Kids don’t walk to school any more. They are ferried and chauffeured to and from primary and secondary schools to safeguard against the potential dangers of accident or malevolence. These same dangers were around when I was growing up, so what has changed? We live in a country that

encourages slovenly behaviour in our children because watching a teenager get fat and lazy is preferable to the horrors of a potential sports injury or going to the effort of cooking a nutritious meal. Long term health is being sacrificed for the easy fix. We would rather pay for the cure than invest any of our time in prevention.

Kids can’t run in school yards anymore. Children are being prevented from running around and enjoying themselves during lunch breaks because of the threat of premium hikes from insurance companies or lawsuits from over-zealous parents. This is Ireland in the 21st century folks. Beautiful, right?

Any society that encourages and promotes sloth among its inhabitants is on a fast-track ticket to extinction. Humans aren’t meant to be waited on hand and foot. We were all given gifts and tools to create a better world for ourselves and protect the planet for future generations to come. Can we honestly say, hand on heart, that we are doing a decent job of it? A society that tolerates hysteria will eventually turn in on itself. Is it possible to attain happiness through paranoia and an irrational fear of the unknown? Every step that cushions our kids against a danger that only might occur is a leap away from reality. Some of you might consider this a bit of a pointless rant and maybe I should consider some positive alternatives. After all, I remember my own parents railing against the softening up of the human race in their time, through the introduction of widespread healthcare and the mass exodus from agriculture to industry. I used to feel sorry for them. And maybe the pressure to evolve, with so many changes in a relatively short time frame, is too much. In the space of two generations, we have more money and less time; more relationships and fewer role-models; more information and fewer insights; more options and less freedom; more technology and less humanity. It is a lot to take in. I believe we need to get back to basics and refocus. We were not meant to live like this; cushioned and minded to the point of paralysis, with human contact giving way to social media and artificial technology. Evolution doesn’t have to come at the price of abandoning our core values. Take a look around. We are slowly drifting away from each other. Soon, the damage might be irreversible.

Old School Cool New book offers glimpse into 60s Cork By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

The Munster Arcade, Queen’s Old Castle department store and Cash’s all feature in a look-back at 60s Cork through the lens of a high-profile politician and businessman of the time. Anthony Barry, who was part of the Barry’s Tea empire, was elected to Dáil Éireann in 1954, and served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1961-62, captured intimate snapshots of life in Cork half a century ago. “The city was coming into its own again, and money was starting to flow” says historian Michael Lenihan, who compiled Cork In The 1960s along with Orla Kelly, Anthony’s granddaughter. Lots was different in the 1960s: “you see a lot of abandoned buggies with children in them

as their mums would pop into shops to get their stuff or even look around” notes Michael. “It was very safe, and you could leave children and shopping outside the door and come back full sure that nothing happened to them.” Mr Lenihan told The Cork News he became “obsessed” with the Coal Quay images. “There are some fantastic faces in the photographs and I wanted to name them so I was up and down the Coal Quay for two weeks interviewing people. I just thought it would be lovely to commemorate these people,” he said. “Everyone is going to have their own favourite, and everyone is going to know somebody in the book.” Michael added that collections of photographs such as those from Anthony Barry are a link to the past: “It’s crucial that people remember history,” concluded Mr Lenihan.

“Everyone is going to have their own favourite, and everyone is going to know somebody in the book.”

Corkman developing new cancer treatment A Cork scientist has been awarded the first Irish grant from the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund in the UK to help him to develop a new pancreatic cancer treatment. Dr. Patrick Forde, who works at the Cork Cancer Research Centre in University College Cork, will carry out potentially life-saving research using intense electric pulses - which temporarily make tissue more porous - to increase the absorption of chemotherapy drugs by pancreatic tumours. Pancreatic cancer is currently one of the least treatable - if not the least treatable - of all forms of the disease. Dr Forde’s project is one of seven promising treatments which have been in receipt of more than €1.5 million in total. All the projects are focused on tackling some of the world’s deadliest cancers and Dr. Forde’s is the first Irish project to be awarded grant support. “I am delighted and extremely proud to have been chosen along with six other worthy projects as a recipient of this

across the country, worth over €32,000. CEO of Children in Hospital Ireland Mary O’Connor stated: “Our volunteers are dedicated to supporting children during their stay in hospital by providing play

and recreational activities every day. Christmas time is a particularly tough time for a child to be sick and these Christmas Annuals supplied by Folens really helped to brighten up the children’s wards last year.”

Marymount hospice goes to the ball In excess of €600,000 has been raised to date by the Marymount Hospice Ball, which is now in its seventh year. The annual fundraiser, which contributes towards maintaining the ongoing work that the hospice provides in palliative and respite care to the sick and elderly, will take place this year on Friday, December 5th at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island. Chief executive officer at Marymount Hospice, Dan Philpott stated: “Each year the Marymount Ball goes from strength to strength, attracting a large number of attendees and raising much needed funds. This success can be attributed to a dedicated organising committee, strong sponsorship partners and, above all, the attendees who support the tremendous

work carried out by the hospice and its medical team on a daily basis.” The auction on the evening will include a Longines ladies watch with Top Wesselton diamonds, exclusive use of the Rolex Box at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, for a performance of Swan Lake on February 13th, 2015 and accommodation for four at the Hilton Waldorf, two tickets for the Ladies Final at the French Open Tennis at Roland Garros on June 6th, 2015 and two return flights to Paris as well as a five-day cooking masterclass for two people with SuperValu brand ambassador and celebrity chef Kevin Dundon at Dunbrody House. Tables of 10 cost €1,500 and individual tickets may be purchased for €150 each.

A Cork-based environmental firm has been awarded just under €1 million in European Union funding to develop commercial opportunities for its world-first sustainable waste treatment technology. Awarded under the EU’s Eco-innovation initiative, the grant will fund a new project that aims to develop the pioneering technology even further through a series of tests here in Ireland and in the Middle East. SCFI, which is located at The Rubicon Centre on the Cork Institute of Technology campus, has developed AquaCritox to provide a sustainable solution for the treatment of a variety of industrial, municipal and sewage wastes. The Eco-innovation project will initially see the design, manufacture and installation of an AquaCritox demonstrator in Cork. This unit will carry out comprehensive testing of the technology’s treatment of municipal and industrial sludges, with an operating capacity of 15,000 tonnes per annum. It will then be shipped to a working com-

mercial facility in the Middle East, where it will carry out further trials – including processing oil and gas waste. John O’Regan, Chief Ex-

ecutive Officer at SCFI, explained that AquaCritox “provides a safe, secure and sustainable solution to a number of expensive and

contentious issues surrounding waste handling and disposal on a global scale.” He added: “Extensive development and trials have already

shown that this technology has the potential to become a game-changer, and the ecoinnovation funding is set to make this a reality.”

Studying at New minds fitness academy enabled me to pursue a career in the fitness industry. Through a combination of the facilities available and the guidance of the tutors I received a first class education in fitness. One of the main reasons I picked New Minds Fitness Academy was the world wide accreditation and also the fact that it is a Cork owned business.

I am a mother of 2 teenage sons. I had been interested in health and fitness for some time and I decided to do something for myself and sign up. I learned so much over the past months about postural alignment, screening, nutrition, fitness testing and much more. It has given me new motivation, purpose in life & confidence and the fellow students, trainers & tutors I met during the course were very encouraging and supportive. I am really looking forward to start working in the fitness industry.

’I really enjoyed my time in New Minds Academy, in Glanmire, Cork. It gave me qualifications which secured me a full time permanent job when I qualified. I would highly recommend this course. You will have 3 separate personal training, gym instruction and nutrition qualifications in 6 months.

I completed my ITEC course in Personal Training, Fitness Instruction and Nutrition with New Minds Fitness Academy in 2013, I initially signed up for the course to gain knowledge for personal use, however I am now working in the fitness industry and love every minute. I would highly recommend this course, within 6 months it will give you the qualifications, knowledge, confidence and kick-start you will need in the fitness industry, thank you to all my tutors and to New Minds Fitness Academy.

Cassie

I graduated last May 2014, I was in transition year at the time so by doing the course it kept me focused. I received 3 qualifications from the course and what I learnt on the course gave me exceptional knowledge of nutrition and how to train people correctly. Since completing the course I have been training myself. I am a keen golfer and from me being healthier and fitter I have reduced my handicap to 2.7 and my goal is to get down to scratch by the end of the year.

will be there waiting for me. I needed a safe haven. Where is it? Is this it? I never could have imagined this. This is awful. We have all had so much support from ordinary people in Cork - it’s just this place.”

“Full support” for Keane after incident Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has said that Corkman Roy Keane has his “full support” after an incident at the team hotel ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifier tonight, Friday. Reports indicate that an incident, believed to be minor, occurred involving the assistant manager and a member of the public in Dublin on Wednesday night. The incident

comes just before the Republic of Ireland face Scotland in the Euro 2016 qualifier in Glasgow. In a video statement posted by the FAI, O’Neill said he and the association have been “fully briefed” about the circumstances of what happened. “Roy asked that the Gardaí be called and he has notified them of what had happened,” he told re-

porters. “While this process is ongoing, we are unable to say more.” However, O’Neill said that “having been made aware of the facts,” Mayfield man Keane has both his “full support and the full support of the FAI and John Delaney”. “We are now focused as we have been all week on the game in hand and we won’t be saying anything more about this issue,” he added.

Daytripper Playwright and director Alice Barry lives in Aghada with her husband Steve Neale, their two children Murragh (8) and Amelia (5) and their dog Oscar. Her one-woman show Fruitcake is at Ballymaloe Grainstore on Sunday, November 23rd.

’Wow, I’ve slept through the entire night’. That’s normally my first thought when I stir at 7.30am. With small children, a snoring husband, an ageing dog and the thoughts rattling around in my head, I’m lucky if I manage to get a good night’s sleep. On school days, we’ve porridge - one of my great joys is seeing the kids tuck into great big bowls of it - and my husband and I have a fruit smoothie with spirulina, which definitely gives us a bit of a jumpstart. However, while I’m starting off the day so healthily, I follow it with two shots of coffee. After dropping the kids to school, it’s literally straight back home and into the office to start working. I leave the house in a complete mess. I work on the computer but there’re loads of notes around the room that I’m jumping back and forth to. From a very young age, I loved singing and dancing and my mother always encouraged me creatively. However, I grew up in a time when you didn’t think it was possible to have a career in the arts, so I studied medical microbiology for five years. When I was 26, I travelled around Asia where people were so generous, inviting us into their homes. They were living on a bowl of rice a day and yet they seemed to be happier than I was with my great job in the Mater. So when I returned I applied for two acting courses - the Diploma in Theatre Studies at the Samuel Beckett Centre in Trinity College, and another in the Gaiety School of Acting - got both, and did the Trinity course. With the play Fruitcake, I started writing it from a fruitcake recipe, a ‘no fail’ one that my mum had. You literally just bung everything into the mix, add a cup of hot milk, and it always comes out perfect. With the character Della, each ingredient reminds her

of something from her past. Immediately I thought Mary McEvoy would be perfect for the role. And she’s actually so perfect that people think it’s Mary’s life! In truth, the bit in the play where she links the sugar with a time that she sneaked treats out of lunchboxes at school was actually something I did. We went around one day taking out biscuits from boxes and were home and dry until an older girl spotted us. We got into fierce trouble, all for a couple of Marietta biscuits.

“From a very young age, I loved singing and dancing and my mother always encouraged me creatively.”

When I’m working on something I’m really excited about, I could easily spend time in front of the computer. And it’s happened at times that I’ve looked at my watch, and said ‘oh my goodness! The children!’. Thankfully, that doesn’t

happen often and usually at 1pm I drop everything, and bomb around the house doing the cleaning and laundry. If there’s time, and it’s dry and sunny outside, I’ll walk the dog up to collect Amelia before heading back again to collect Murragh at 2.40pm. For

lunch, I’ve made this great discovery of American-style pancakes with spelt flour. You can whizz up anything that’s white in the milk - chickpeas, cannellini beans, butter beans, turkey or chicken - add it to the mixture, cook them and they eat them away. The

kids haven’t discovered yet what I’m doing! If I haven’t walked Oscar earlier, we walk him together after lunch and one of our favourite places to go is White Bay, where Murragh can climb the rocks and Amelia can draw in the sand. We

also make sand sculptures, out of ropes and sticks from washed-up debris. We’ll spend hours at it and, of course, as the dog loves it too, we’re all happy. The two kids are little characters and an absolute joy. They’re both also creative. Amelia in particular spends her whole time singing. Probably like a lot of parents, with Frozen at the moment, I’m thinking ‘LET IT GO!’ but with One Direction next in line, I’d almost prefer the keep the princess around. I’m a ‘meat and two veg’ kind of girl as I grew up on a farm in Carrigtwohill. That’s where I learnt my cooking skills but sometimes I break out and do the odd Indian for dinner. In my downtime, reading is a lovely luxury. I’m in a book club and the next book up is a fantastic one called Burial Rites. I also love Tana French’s crime novels, and got The Secret Place as a birthday present, which I also have to dip into while I try and read at least one short story a day. A good novel is the one you don’t want to put down. But if I’m starting to get sleepy, I force myself to put the book to bed and get to sleep by midnight. I’m a firm believer that life’s too short so you should enjoy it. Another good one is don’t let success go to your head but don’t let failure go to your heart. I actively try and live by ‘life’s short’, but the other one is harder. Particularly the ‘don’t let failure go to heart’ part! My hero is my mother as she’s so enthusiastic about life. She’s always encouraged us to take any adventure or opportunity. If I’m half of the mother she is, then I’d be lucky. I’ve always had a great relationship with her and that’s what I’d love for my daughter, that she could talk to me about anything. Well, apart from sneaking treats from lunch boxes...I’d kill her if she did that!”.

Online Trading Voucher deadline approaches

The Cork International team pictured with their National Bar Awards ‘Hotel Bar of the Year’ certificate and National Hospitality Awards ‘Best Value Hotel’ certificate. Picture by Gerard McCarthy.

Double the plaudits for Cork International Hotel Cork International Hotel, currently ranked on Tripadvisor as one of the best hotels in Cork, has won two national awards in as many weeks. The hotel’s ‘New Yorker

Bar’ was named ‘Hotel Bar of the Year’ at the National Bar Awards last month, while at the National Hospitality Awards, held in Dublin last week, the hotel won the ‘Best Value Hotel’ prize.

Aaron Mansworth, General Manager of Cork International Hotel, paid tribute to his staff: “It is the people behind the scenes, as well as those that meet our guests on a day to day basis that

Friday, November 28th is deadline day for applications for the Online Trading Voucher scheme which was rolled out by Local Enterprise Offices in Cork this summer. The scheme offers small businesses and retailers the opportunity to apply for match funding to the value of €2,500 to develop and improve their online trading presence. Digital trade in Ireland is growing at a rate of 16% per annum and the digital economy in Ireland is set to grow to €21 billion by 2017; yet only 23% of Irish SMEs currently trade online, and so the scheme offers small businesses a huge opportunity to develop and engage in the

hugely powerful market of online sales. LEOs in Cork have €150,000 worth of OTVs available which can be used for the development or upgrade of e-commerce websites by implementing online payments or booking systems, purchasing of internet related software, online advertising, development of an app, implementation of a digital marketing strategy or training/ skills development to establish and manage an online trading activity. The scheme is open to businesses trading for over 12 months which have a limited online trading presence, fewer than 10 employees and a turnover of less than €2 million.

Cork’s Blue Star schools continuing to shine Twenty Cork schools have now signed up for a programme to foster better knowledge and understanding of the European Union in recent years. The Blue Star Programme, now in its fourth year, challenges primary school pupils to get creative and think about Europe by carrying out projects in relation to four key elements:

the history, geography, culture and creativity, and institutions of the EU. To date the programme, which is managed by European Movement Ireland, has already involved over 200 schools and 15,000 school children across Ireland. The new website for the initiative, bluestarprogramme. ie, was launched at one of the

participating Cork schools, Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil in Glanmire, by Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD. “Twenty schools in Cork have signed up for Blue Star over the last three years, and I’m delighted to hear that already another 18 have applied for the current school year,” he said.

A man who made history comes to Cork Former minister for justice and founder of the Progressive Democrats Des O’Malley will be in Cork this Saturday, November 15th at lunchtime to sign copies of his autobiography Conduct Unbecoming: A Memoir. O’Malley’s career coincided with some of the most dramatic events in Irish political life. In his book he offers fresh insights into the events that have shaped Ireland’s past and present, such as the arms crisis, the troubles, the Haughey years, the Beef Tribunal and the foundation of the now-defunct Progressive Democrats. Aged just 31, a novice Des O’Malley became minister for justice just as the arms crisis came to a head, putting him and his family in significant danger. The politician was also an eternal thorn in the side of the notorious Charles Haughey and was expelled from Fíanna Fáil for ‘conduct unbecoming’ - he had spoken out in favour of making contraception more

The fund was established to support community and voluntary groups that wish to undertake capital development projects in their own respective villages and towns. Independent councillor John Paul O’Shea outlined the commitment of Cork County Council in allocating monies to these “deserving projects”,

adding that it was a “welcome announcement” for the groups involved: “This funding will undoubtedly benefit the many community and voluntary organisations who have worked extremely hard in recent months planning for such developments in their respective communities, and I look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour becoming a reality during the coming months,” he said.

Christmas market takes a stand against sex trafficking A Christmas market is to open next week in Carrigrohane and will raise funds for a campaign aimed at tackling child sex trafficking. The Tearfund Christmas Market will open its doors on Saturday, November 22nd from 10am to 4pm at St Peter’s Church Hall in Carrigrohane, with pre-loved

and vintage clothing for sale alongside crafts, handcrafted gifts and a café with home baking. Joy Cantwell Moore, who heads up the Christmas Market team, stated that last year’s event raised almost €4,000: “This year’s fundraising focus is Tearfund’s current campaign: No Children Taken.

This vital campaign aims to tackle child sex trafficking at source,” she said. “It offers an alternative to families who think they are sending their daughters to a bright future that is in fact sex slavery. They provide education to parents alongside vocational training as an alternative for vulnerable young girls.”

molly

Meet lovely little Molly. She is a five-year-old Jack Russell, neutured, micro chipped and very friendly. Molly is good around children, loves being petted, and good around other dogs. She also loves naps, and will take as many as possible throughout the day!

odin

Meet Odin. He is a beautiful husky, 18 weeks old but due to a poor start in life he’s only about the size of a 10-week-old Husky. He is now doing really well and catching up in size and weight. As he grows he’s getting really playful and is good with other dogs of all sizes. He’s very smart: he already sits and gives the paw, and when he wants food he yaps and bangs his paws on the ground. Odin is looking for a loving home but will need to be an inside dog as

he loves to curl up on his basket and go to sleep. Like all huskies, he’ll need to go for lots of walks.

judy

Judy is just super happy that Pauline has taken her in and is looking after her. She’s two or three years old and was left abandoned with a rope around her neck with no food and no idea where she was. Thankfully a kind man called Micheal found her, fed her and cared for her until Pauline had room at the rescue. She loves other dogs and being cuddled, and needs a home where she’ll be loved and protected.

The big clean in Mallow Dear Editor, The Mallow Tidy Towns Annual General Meeting will take place this Thursday November 13th at 8pm in our Hibernian Way headquarters. All are welcome to attend. Even though we are entering a relatively quiet time of year for our group, there is a high volume of activity going on behind the scenes. Plans and projects are being hatched, budgets and figures are being accounted for and the recruitment drive is in full swing! As well as volunteers who give selflessly of their time throughout the year, there is a committee working away in the background. Now, more than ever, we require people with skills and interests in such diverse topics as biodiversity, recycling, urban renewal, local history and landscaping, to mention but a few. As part of our National Tidy Towns competition application entry, we must discuss and be well versed in these areas as well as many

others. This is difficult for a small group such as ourselves. If you, or someone you know, has these skills or interests and would be willing to help us or point us in the right direction, we would be delighted to hear from you. Email us at mallowtidytowns@gmail.com, message us on Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, ring us on 086 3436 283 after 7pm or drop a letter into our HQ at Hibernian Way. No excuses, we are easily found! Next Saturday morning at 8am our early crew are out for their litter pick around the carparks, laneways and side streets off Main St. Our 10.30am group will continue the refurbishment of Hibernian Way, which is the meeting place for both groups. Everyone is welcome to us and help to make a difference. Don’t forget to ‘Keep your Patch up to Scratch!’ Kind regards, Paudy McAuliffe Mallow Tidy Towns

Competition winners For the past few week’s we’ve been running a great competition in association with The Kingsley Hotel and The Elf On The Shelf and hundreds upon hundreds of you entered. It’s great to see the Christmas spirit alive and well, and not just in Cork: The Cork News had entries from Kerry, Clare, Mayo, Dublin, Tipperary, Belfast and even the USA, and we’d like to thank everyone who took the time to answer any one of our three Christmas questions. Those answers, for the few who tried their best but didn’t quite get it right, were Finland, Donner and Saint Nicholas; we

had asked you to tell us where Lapland is, which reindeer partners with Blitzen (many of you knew that Donner and Blitzen mean “thunder and lightning” in German), and which name gives us the Dutch-based Santa Claus. Unfortunately, there can only be three winners of our great prize of a stay in the fabulous Kingsley and the comapny of your very own Elf, so congratulations to Nuala O’Shea of Millstreet, Simon Toussifar from Kinsale and Melissa Cashman in Banduff. Thanks again to all who entered and don’t worry, there’s always next year!

A new take on things

14 November 2014

Róisín Thornhill meets the Cork businessmen flushed with success after Dublin’s Web Summit

F

resh from his company’s inaugural appearance at this year’s Web Summit, the biggest technology event of it’s kind in Europe, Denis O’Mahoney, Chief Marketing Officer of Cork start-up Voxtake, is feeling positive: “It went even better than expected.” If anything, Denis is in fact playing down the company’s success at the event. This year, the Web Summit – the fourth such annual event – had six-hundred-and-three speakers from some of the most successful and influential companies on the planet today. Those attending were addressed by by speakers who included Peter Theil,

the co-founder of PayPal, and John Sculley, the former Chief Executive Officer of Apple. The event was the brain child of Paddy Cosgrave, an Irish entrepreneur, and saw one thousand journalists and twenty-two-thousand attendees from Ireland and from around the world descend on the RDS for three days last week. Voxtake was one of four start-up finalists that were selected by members of the Allied Irish Banks Youth Hatch Incubator Programme for young entrepreneurs to compete for a prize of €10,000 (footage of the pitches submitted by each of the four entrants will shortly be available on Allied Irish Banks’ YouTube channel).

Although Voxtake did not ultimately win the overall prize, O’Mahoney declares that its being chosen to compete with a pitch was in fact a ‘huge validation’ of the company. Its interactive platform TapStak struck a chord with the younger attendees at the event. This is quite a validation indeed when you bear in mind the estimated five hundred plus start-ups vy-

ing for attention at the Web Summit. TapStak provides synergy in smartphone applications by enabling a stack (or stak!) of interactions currently dependant on the verbal, digital or written word to be made available via push-button, or ‘tap’, technology. Data capture and processing are at the very heart of customer relationships and the developers

of TapStak claim that it will open up new avenues and solve problems for both endusers and content providers. And, importantly as TapStak is a shared platform, it will reduce development costs for the technological industry and pain for end-users. What it will provide will be one shared platform along with shared costs and also shared interactive experiences. Al-

O’Mahoney admits that the description of the platform’s capability is limited and so he prefers to demonstrate the capabilities of the product at first hand. The Voxtake website will be upgraded to include an interactive demonstration of TapStak in January, when the product will be officially launched. He laughs off the suggestion that the contentious WiFi outage at the Web Summit hindered the demonstration of TapStak for potential investors and says, “It wasn’t as bad as the media were making out: we made do. It was down on Tuesday and sporadic on Wednesday but luckily we had some back-up data on hand to show people.” O’Mahoney was also enthused by the atmosphere at the event and says, “There’s a genuine hunger out there in marketing for new and innovate ways to retain engagement with consumers and TapStak provides that.” The company consists of Tony O’Donovan, its Chief Executive Officer, Denis O’Mahoney, Chief Marketing Officer and Assumpta Donovan, its Chief Financial Officer. None of the executives are coders or programmers of any kind. O’Donovan had a spark of an idea and turned to O’Mahoney to help fulfil its potential. “Myself and Tony hadn’t seen each other in years. In fact he knew me back when I was involved in a music publishing company…. we bumped into each other leaving a Weblink conference and we reconnected.” O’Donovan is a graduate of the New Frontiers Entrepreneurial Development Programme, which is funded by Enterprise Ireland and helps entrepreneurs to validate the market potential of their business ideas. After joining forces, both men realised they needed assistance from a technical source to develop their product. Voxtake turned to the Nimbus Centre at Cork Institute of Technology to begin initial development on the prototype of TapStak. The Nimbus Centre, a huge state-of-the-art facility, is Ireland’s only research centre which is devoted to the field of networked embedded

electronic systems. It supports the three individual and vital pillars: Research, Learning and Industry. The ‘Industry’ pillar is known as the TEC Gateway. Nimbus is funded under the Higher Education Authority’s Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions by Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and by direct industry funding. Voxtake received additional support from the South Cork Local Enterprise Office which serves as a ‘first stop shop to provide support and services to start grow and delvelop micro business in the South Cork area’. The ‘software mentor’ provided by the Local Enterprise Office helped Voxtake to develop the technical specification from which DMS (the company’s tech pro partners) could then develop the platform that has now become TapStak. DMS is a global entity which is largely based Sri Lanka but which also has a presence in Ire-

land. The company has over five hundred employees and thirty years of experience in different areas of information technology. The company’s head of mobile Dhananjaya Premaratna joined Voxtake at the Web Summit so as to provide additional technical support for TapStak. TapStak is currently in final testing for iOS (Apple) and for Android applications. The testing will be completed shortly and the platform will be launched in January. It is promised that TapStak will unlock the full commercial potential of the smartphone as a powerful ‘person-to-realworld’ interactive device with one simple interface. With over 1.6 million people in Ireland alone currently owning a smartphone and considering that eighty nine per-cent of consumer media time is spent using mobile applications, one can only conclude that if TapStak fulfils its potential the possibilities for it and for Voxtake are endless.

The Real Deal We’re all about the steaming hunks of crumbly, hot fish and thick, rich sauces and we’re very good at it. The Japanese approach, however, is more akin to creating a delicate work of art which reflects the purest essence of the

food. Sashimi and sushi, Japan’s most iconic foods, require the best of fish, the sharpest of knives and years of dedicated training. At WabiSabi on Oliver Plunkett Street you can experience the perfect marriage between Japanese artistry and the exceptional

quality of the fish from our waters, supplied by none other than Cork’s legendary fishmongers Kay O’Connell, at the English Market.

In the hands of Lai San, WabiSabi’s master sushi chef, each and every morsel of food becomes a sublime experience. Using nothing but the freshest ingredients and all the skills he has accrued over the course of years of careful study and practice, he produces sashimi of incredible richness and delicacy. The wide range of sashimis, from sake (salmon) to maguro (tuna) to suzuki (bass) to hotate (scallops), each has its own character and technique.

Each hosomaki, those beloved rolls of fish, sushi rice and crisp nori, bursts with flavour and perfectly complementary texture, every nigiri is a bite-sized treat, flawlessly contrasting the full flavour of Kay O’Connell’s fish with the bittersweet perfection of the rice.

And if you haven’t quite worked your way up to sashimi and sushi yet (believe me, it’s well worth the reward when you do), head chef Soon San has an enormous range of dishes for you to savour, ranging from traditional starters

51

Like Ireland, Japan is an island nation, surrounded by rich seas. Also like us, the Japanese have a long and proud relationship with seafood, but their approach is noticably different to ours.

(try the delicately salted edamame, the remarkable beef tataki or the extremely more-ish agedashi tofu), the Japanese salads, the huge steaming bowls of ramen noodles, yaki soba or udon or, if you’re really really hungry, the outstanding tori teriyarki, gyuniku (beef fillet with one of the best barbecue sauces you’ve ever had), unadon or torikatsu, and revel in the perfect miso, kimchi or gyoza soups. The range - whether from the evening or lunch menus - is enormous, and each dish is as delicious as the last. And, as this is all traditional Asian cuisine, vegetarians are well catered for too - the kimchi nahan is a particular favourite. WabiSabi is open from 12.30 until late, seven days a week. If you’re in a rush for lunch, phone ahead on

If you absolutely must stay in the loop, you can use the free WiFi while you relax with a glass of wine.

An understated jewel right in the heart of Cork City, WabiSabi is the perfect nexus of Irish ingredients and Japanese artistry. See for yourself just why the restaurant is rated as excellent on tripadvisor, yelp, facebook and more and prepare for an exceptional meal you won’t forget.

A perfect drink (in moderation!) for cold, wet, wintery evenings, mulled wine goes back a few years. We have the Romans to thank for the warming glow of spiced, steaming wine. They were so fond of their wine it’s a wonder they got anything done at all, but most of it was so unpalatable that they would water it down and add things like honey, fruit and spices (if they were well off ) and even lead. These days we don’t go in so much for dissolving lead in our wine (if we did, we’d notice that it sweetens it up considerably, and then we’d come down with lead poisoning), but spices and fruit have gone hand-in-hand with winter wine ever since. Aside from the occasional regional variation (black pepper is popular in the Balkans, maple syrup is used in Canada, for instance) the ingredients and method don’t change too much and you can prepare your own at home with an absolute minimum of fuss. You can even get little pre-made ‘teabag’ style spice pouches which are very handy, but don’t leave much room for personal preferenece. Start with the following, and then experiment a bit to find your own personal take on this 2000-year-old classic: Take a bottle of red wine Claret is good - and tip the whole lot into a spotlessly clean saucepan, adding a little water and a glass (or two!) of port. Place it over a low heat; don’t blast it and don’t let it boil - remember, alcohol evaporates at a much lower temperature than water. You can also add a shot of brandy. Add ‘wintery’ spices to taste, but always remember to start with a little and keep tasting as you put

more in. Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, star anise and allspice are all great. Zest an orange and add that little by little too, remembering that it will take a while for all the flavours to spread. As you would for a hot port, stud orange slices with cloves and add them in, and if you’re

OR

so inclined add raisins and sultanas - or apples, if you’re mulling cider. Sweeten with honey or sugar, but remember that it’s bad form to have your mulled wine too sweet. Give it time for the flavour to develop and strain before serving, keeping it over a low heat for as long as it lasts.

Be advised: Huguenot is number one Huguenot on Carey’s Lane has been voted Cork’s best restaurant on the popular and influential TripAdvisor website. The site allows tourists and regulars to give their opinions and ratings for everything from bars to restaurants to hotels to entire cities and assorted tourist-related areas. The bistro, which opened at the beginning of September, has clearly made its mark on Cork’s food community, and has racked up an extremely impressive series of ratings on the site, moving up to the top spot this week. “I found out yesterday eve-

ning when one of the customers told me about it” proprietor and head chef Brendan Cashman told The Cork News. “We’re very happy indeed about it, and we’d like to thank all our patrons and customers for their continued support,” he added. Chef Brendan also hinted at subtle, seasonal changes which will appear in Huguenot’s menu of classic French cuisine in the run-up to Christmas, although he refused to give too many details away. “The Christmas menu will be out in the next week or two,” he said, “and there will

be subtle and small changes. Christmas looks to be a good one, and we’re already almost completely booked out.” While the bistro upstairs is all but full for Winter, the popular wine bar downstairs remains open for what Brendan wryly described as “informal Christmas gatherings”. The bar can accommodate groups up to about 20 people for tipples and petit bouches, and features a fantastic lunchtime menu every day from Tuesday to Saturday. Demand is currently so high that plans are now in place to open the first-floor bistro for lunchtime as well as Christmas gets closer.

Brendan Cashman, head chef at Huguenot.

Veggies can be stewperb! “Stereotypes,” they say, “exist for a reason”. There’s one Irish stereotype I don’t think any of us object to, and that’s that we love our stews. And why wouldn’t we? A long slow cook tenderising the meat, thick rich gravy, great big chunks of root vegetables and a dash - or two or three of porter thrown in for good measure, and a good stew can sit there bubbling away slowly for the better part of a day. There’s a whole world of ‘other’ stews out there too, though, and we’re discovering them slowly and surely. Winter time is the perfect season to expand our stew horizons, and for the more health (or weight) conscious among us, the vegetarian option can be excellent, not only providing a healthy, fibre-filled alternative but also allowing much much more in the way of variation. Jack Crotty, also known as The Rocket Man, is an ac-

knowledged expert when it comes to hearty vegetarian stews and hotpots, and The Rocket Man HQ on Prince’s Street has been churning out rich stews full of Middle Eastern and African flair for over a month now, warming many’s the chilly Corkonian. “In my experience there are three key elements to a good vegetarian stew” says Jack, and he ought to know. “Firstly, use fresh ingredients. Stews and soups can often become a kitchen safety net for un-used trimmings and bits and bobs. Planning your recipe and using the best of ingredients is paramount. Secondly, use good vegetable stock: there are few good vegetable stocks on the market so you may notice similarities in all dishes from place to place. The stock is the backbone of the stew. We cook all our pulses and grains and reserve the cooking waters as the basis for intense vegetable stock.

€10 LUNCH

Jack Crotty, also known as The Rocket Man. Picture by: Krzysztof Zielenski.

Lastly, and most importantly; avoiding the over cooking! Over cooked food is horrible. It lacks flavour and texture, not to mention that most nutritional benefits get cooked away to nothing. Vegetables generally collapse and over cook much quicker

than meat, and that’s the biggest challenge.” If you’re stuck for ingredients to add, take inspiration from this sampler of stews on rotation at Rocketman HQ; Beetroot, kale and spelt is full of texture from the spelt and delicious earthy flavours

from the beetroot, as well as tonnes of iron from the kale. Chickpea, potato and baharat (Ethiopian spices) has a warming edge, while white Indian stew with cavelo nero and potato is deliciously filling. Red lentil dahl with carrot and sorrel is thick

and indulgent, while wild mushroom and kale broth is perfect for the fungophiles among you. Jack’s own personal favourite, Ethiopian spiced lentil and squash stew with spinach (he learned the recipe in Ethiopia), is a spectacular winter pick-me-up.

to pay 2.6% more (averaging out at €4,700) to live within 200 metres of a primary school and 1.9% more (€3,600) for easy access to a post primary. However, Cork City’s premium for a post-primary location is €4,735, by far the largest in the country, while the highest for primary schools is in South County Dublin at a mind boggling €25,000. Ronan Lyons, assistant professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin, stated that while the report indicated that people do pay more to live close to schools, there were “some surprising results”: “What we have found here is that, once the characteristics of an area are controlled for, such as adults’ average education level and the unemployment rate, the premium is not bigger for secondary schools with greater rates of progression to university or indeed to fee-paying schools,” he said.

We’re all starting to seal ourselves up in our homes in the evenings, plugging every draft to save precious heat, reduce fuel costs and keep toasty warm. The only downside is the lack of fresh air, and notso-fresh smells become more noticeable. Wet dogs; dodgy socks; noxious cat boxes and general household stinkiness can be alleviated somewhat with the addition of some clever plants. More than just living décor, they’ll add fresh atmosphere to your home. Resident horticulturalist at Hanley’s Garden Centre Damien Conlon explains how house plants can do more for you and your family than just jazzing up your interiors. Many have genuine health benefits: “Having plants indoors helps improve air quality, which

makes people feel better”, says Damien. “Sealed internal environments can get a bit stuffy and when there’s lots of electrical equipment switched on, synthetic furnishings and household chemicals around, they can all lead to an unhealthy atmosphere inside the house.” By day, plants absorb Headaches, itchy eyes and a carbon dioxide and general ‘bunged up’ feeling can emit oxygen. They are our heroes Cancer support centre gives back to nurses By Maria Tracey

maria@thecorknews.ie

We’re not the heroes, these women are” said the nurse, poignantly. The Girls Club, Cork’s voluntary support centre for women battling cancer or - as they put it, “on their cancer journey”- has been giving back to nursingw staff at local hospitals. However, the centre’s founder Ann Dowley Spillane says it’s the other way around, and it’s the nurses who are the heroes. “They really are amazing and they are our heroes,” she enthused. “None of us do this work for the rewards, and the nurses certainly don’t do it for that. But what they do is unbelievable.” As part of a ‘giving back’ event organised by The Girls Club, which is located on St Paul’s Avenue, nurses came to the welcoming centre to be

treated with make-overs and Reiki. Norma Dowling and Margaret Shanahan, clinical nurse specialists at the Breast Care unit at Cork University Hospital, stated that being recognised for the work that they do is a “lovely but unexpected” part of their job. “We work with breast cancer patients all the time, and it’s so rewarding,” said Margaret. “I am in it 20 years, and have the same energy for it now as I’ve always had. It’s difficult at times of course, like when diagnosing patients, but there is a nice side to the job too. I love meeting a patient who is 23 years out from breast cancer.” Norma explained that centres like The Girls Club, which offer support for cancer patients, are always welcomed. “Real relaxation, calm and peace, that’s the sense I get from this place,” she said. With a laugh, Ann stated that the centre is aptly known

as ‘The Gluepot’. “You can’t get out of the place,” she smiled. “It’s like a home away from home”. This sentiment is also echoed by centre volunteer Elma O’Mahony. “There’s something very positive within the

organisation,” she said. “I can’t put my finger on it.”. Such is the reputation of The Girls Club that a number of businesses, boutiques, hair and nail salons, and make-up studios supplied their services free of charge for the night. “I was just absolutely flabbergasted when I rang businesses, asking them for an outfit, and they answered ‘yep no problem’,” said Elma. “Even in the times we are now in, they still have time for a worthy cause.” Elma added that treating the nurses, who came from the Bon Secours, Marymount University Hospital & Hospice, CUH, and Mercy University Hospital, is important”: “They see it as their job, but it’s nice to be appreciated. One of the nurses did say to me, ‘I don’t know why you are thanking me, what you are doing more important’. But they’re fantastic, and they should be acknowledged for what they are doing.”

Local author explores family life A Cork author has written a book about what happens in a household with “two lively kids and at least one quirky whacky parent”. Orla Kelly, who is behind Mommyville, On the Road to a PhD in Parenthood, said the tale of ‘eccentric’ mum Claire, sensible father Tim and their two children, was something she had planned to write for “quite some time”.

“We want to teach our kids so many things but more importantly look at all they teach us,” she said. “This book dives in deep, and you never know where it is going to take you or where you will end up. It is a humorous but heartwarming account of living in rural Ireland and includes all the local “goings on” that characterise an Irish sense of humour.”

Charity tackling rogue traders A charity working to improve services for older people is encouraging the use of its local scheme to protect against ‘rogue traders’. After recent news reports of elderly people being conned out of thousands of euro by thieves posing as roof repair specialists, Age Action is appealing for those in need of a reliable tradesperson to get in contact, as they keep a list of people who can provide quotations for jobs. Regional manager John O’Mahony stated the list is particularly helpful at this time of year: “People prepare for the winter by getting work done, such as boiler services, chimney cleans, gutter clearances, repairs to damaged roof tiles or heating systems,”

he said. “At Age Action we keep a list of reliable tradesmen who will do these jobs at reasonable prices. This ensures that older people won’t be ripped off when they employ people to work in their homes.” Volunteers also do smaller jobs for free. “We get a lot of requests to put up smoke alarms and to install security locks and chains,” said Mr O’Mahony. “This helps people to feel safer during the dark winter evenings. Any older person who would like to have a small job done for them or to employ a tradesman for a bigger job should call us. We’ll help in anyway we can”. Online safety guide for parents A series of online safety videos has been launched by a health insurance company headquartered in Little Island, offering parents tips on how to spot if their child is being cyber-bullied. With more children now using social media sites from a range of different devices, the job of protecting kids online is increasingly challenging for parents. Hence, Laya Healthcare and forensic psychologist Dr Maureen Griffin have produced a series video seminars for parents. Throughout the month, new videos will be uploaded to layahealthcare.ie/onlinesafety covering tips from how to spot if a child is being cyber-bullied to practical advice on controlling online content. The video sessions will conclude with a live Q+A session with Dr Griffin on Friday, November 28th from 7pm to 9pm on facebook.ie/LayaHealthcare. Managing director of Laya Healthcare Dónal Clancy

currently considered cool among kids and how to best protect them when online at home and out and about.”

Only a few weeks ago, the Kingstons from Kinsale won the title of “Ireland’s Fittest Family” on the RTÉ show of the same name. The Kingstons gained victory over the Mulhares, having been mentored by their coach, former international athlete and fellow Corkonian Derval O’ Rourke. On winning, Jessica Kingston said “I felt over the moon to win the title! Our goal as a family was

to be in the finals and it was a complete bonus to win it in the end”. Fresh from their victory, Jessica took on a new challenge and has now started work as a Staff Nurse in Theatre at the Bon Secours Hospital. Jessica is relocating to Cork from Dublin, where she studied at Trinity College and trained in the Adelaide and Meath National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght.

Getting the job in the Bons and winning Ireland’s Fittest Family means she has achieved two major life goals. Jessica said “I have achieved a lifelong ambition to become a theatre nurse, I’m going to work early and coming home late as I am enjoying every minute of the experience, just like I did when I was training, and I’m ecstatic to be living the dream.”

Although the summer is over, and the winter frost has begun to set in, it isn’t a reason to go into hibernation. And it sure isn’t an excuse to start wearing tights instead of shaving your legs. In fact, winter is the perfect time for laser hair removal, which works by focusing an intensely concentrated beam of ultraviolet light down through the hair shaft - the

visible hair above the skin to the hair follicle, in order to target the pigment in the hair. “As most people will not be actively getting a tan at this time of year, it’s ideal for starting a course of laser hair removal,” said leading laser hair removal clinic, Therapie. Affordable culture: Krakow My friends and I want to take a mini break away together to celebrate our graduation from college. We would love to visit a city with lots of interesting history and culture, a great nightlife and that is still affordable. Is there anywhere that you could recommend?”

With centuries of history to explore, the famed Main Square of Krakow - the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland - is the perfect place to begin your adventure of this beautiful place. Found in the pristine Old Town, the square dates back to medieval times and serves as the gravitational centre of the city. The 16th century Cloth Hall is the central feature and is a listed UNESCO world heritage site. Browse the merchant stands at what is considered the world’s oldest shopping mall and soak in the busy marketplace atmosphere brimming

with centuries of history and heritage. This is the ideal spot to gather with friends, sample some of the local delicacies and plan your day. Wawel is a fortified complex perched at the top of a hill south of the Old Town and a national cultural institution in Poland dating back to the 14th century. It is made up of a beautiful assortment of architectural styles such as Renaissance, Gothic and Romanesque. Of the collection, the medieval Castle Wawel and the cathedral are the most famous and a mustsee while you are in Krakow. The stunning castle is now home to a phenomenal collection of art and a selection of exhibitions including Leonardo Da Vinci’s portrait Lady with an Ermine which is said to rival the Mona Lisa in beauty. Historical remnants of World War II still linger in Poland and this is no clearer than in nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau, the former concentration camp, now a memorial with a museum

open to the public. It is easily accessible from Krakow’s city centre by train. There are guided tours available that will give you the opportunity to learn more about the holocaust in an insightful and authentic environment. While the experience of visiting such a site can be difficult, it pays a moving tribute to the more than one million lives taken there during the war and is a key place to visit during your stay in Krakow. When it comes to nightlife in Krakow, you will be spoilt for choice amongst the hundreds of bars in the city. Kazimierz is

the artistic hub and has become one of Krakow’s most popular night spots. The winding laneways are filled with a plethora of watering holes from trendy cavernous cellar pubs to fashionable cocktail bars heaving with stylish people. This captivating city really comes to life at night. A funky urban creature

Toyota’s collaborative, go-getter-oriented Aygo is great around town but its edgy styling may not age well, says Seán Creedon.

I

f you are producing a small city car that shares its underpinnings with two other cars by different companies, then you have got to be imaginative with the colour design. That’s what Toyota have done with their small Aygo, which comes in a range of bright colours. In 2001 the presidents of Toyota and PSA Peugeot/ Citroen got together and

Aygo

decided to produce a small car and share development costs. The project produced the Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107. There is very little between the cars in size and price, but the Aygo certainly stands out in the colour and styling department. The day I went to pick up my test car from Toyota there were two very colourful models parked near reception. There was a

very attractive amber colour, but I had the keys to the one with the Cork colours; red and white. The front of the Aygo really catches your eye. It has an ‘X’ design grille, but whether it really has the ‘X Factor’ is up to you, the motorist, to decide. It’s certainly very daring from Toyota, who are normally fairly conservative with their front-end designs. You can experiment and

This is

mix and match the various colours. However, the Opel Adam also offers the choice to mix and match and hasn’t been a great success in Ireland. You should always bear in mind that some day you will want to trade your car in, and the next person may not like your ‘mad’ design. However, I really did like the Toyota logo on the hub caps. It’s a neat city car, which can turn on the proverbial sixpence, and if you are inexperienced at parking, your confidence in parallel parking should definitely improve in the Aygo. Bright externally, there are some nice interior styling touches also which make

the car attractive. I liked the simple design on the dash. There is a touch-screen display and two buttons for the radio controls. None of your scanning up and down to find your favourite station. As they used to say in death notices in Irish papers many years ago, ‘American papers please copy.’ In this case all other car companies please copy. I drove a four-door version and the back doors seemed a bit ‘tinnier’ than the front. The back windows only open out and the distance between the back door handle and the boot is very short. The boot is tiny, but surprise, surprise, there is a full-size

ShowTime November 6th-10th

spare wheel, which for me is always a major plus. On the road this is a lively motor, but sometimes I found the 1.0-litre petrol engine wanting if I wanted to overtake in a hurry. There is room for four adults, but I reckon the back seat would probably suit children more than bulky adults. Prices start at €12,625 for the two-door, while the fourdoor starts at €12,995. Road tax is €180. Definitely one for the urban dweller. There are five Toyota dealers in Cork: Cogans Carrigaline; Grandons Glanmire; Lehane Motors South Douglas Road; Macroom Motors and O’Callaghan’s Kanturk.

Volvo has long been considered one of the safest cars on the market, and although many years ago were known for somewhat boxy bodies, these days they offer curvaceous and sleek styling that doesn’t look like anything else on the road. This winning combination of beautiful design with comfort and technology makes them a serious contender against the Germans. I’m certainly enamoured with the 2013 S60 D2 SE Powershift I pick up from the lovely men in suits at Johnson & Perrott Mahon Point. This gorgeous black-onblack number is pretty eyecatching. The LED running lights and headlight clusters look sporty, and a bold Volvo logo dominates the front grille. I’ve never driven an S60 before, so spend some time playing with the keypad

and dials in the centre dash to adjust all the electrical toys. There’s a host of sensors from rain to parking; Bluetooth; adjustable steering column and a variety of airbags befitting a car with this level of NCAP safety rating. The automatic is a very re-

laxed drive; the leather seats are more comfy than my couch and although the 1.6 diesel engine isn’t massive, it’s smooth and refined on the cruise towards Youghal where I pick up my aunt for lunch. My uncle wants to ‘take her for a burn’ – he’s 87. I think of

the trusting face of the Sales Manager at J&P and distract him with a biscuit. My Aunt insists on sitting in the back where she pulls down the armrest and barks directions; she’s paying for our meal so when we arrive at the restaurant she makes me

open the car door and carry her bag. There is no such thing as a free lunch. She’s no less bossy on the return journey - her incessant nattering nearly causes a fender bender with the car ahead of me as we slow toward the lights. I mentally

thank whatever Swedish engineer is responsible for the Volvo City Safety system, autonomous emergency braking designed to monitor an area ahead of the car for collision threats. It pre-charges the brakes and makes the Emergency Brake Assist system more sensitive so the car responds immediately. At less than 15km/h the car brakes, and at higher speeds any collision impact would be greatly reduced. Very clever, the Swedes. I had a fleeting thought of running the aunt over but I’m pretty sure the system works for pedestrians too. We drop back the car and she has to be dragged away from her shameless flirting with the salesman. She’s 84. He handled it with grace. The S60 is one of the greener executive saloons, with a combined mpg of 69 and CO2 emissions at 107 g/km. It’s an excellent marriage of style and substance, has only 27,645 miles on the clock and you can drive your own batty aunt around in it for €27,900. Keep an eye on the second hand As the second-hand car market begins to follow the new-car market and pick up, better-quality used cars are becoming more readily available and, as supply starts to equalise with demand, prices are once again coming down. David Quirke, owner of Cork’s Volkswagen Specialists Blackwater Motors, has these recommendations when it comes to buying secondhand: “First things first,” says David, “you’re better off buying from a dealer. Make sure they have a good reputation: you can check how long they’ve been in business, how many cars they tend to sell, and what people say about them. Next, you have to check the condition of the car itself. “Ask yourself how the car looks. Does the mileage reflect its age? You can also tell by looking whether it has been looked after or abused. Check the interior; is it clean? Has it been valeted properly? Are the carpets or steering wheel worn? If the interior such as the wheel or the carpets or upholstery - are worn

and there’s low mileage on the clock then you need to ask some questions!” What a lot of people may not know about buying secondhand from a dealer is the depth of background checking, inspection and servicing that goes into every car. Though he’s a Volkswagen specialist, David gives his vote of confidence to Cork’s other reputable dealers too in this regard, highlighting that any of Cork’s dealers will stand over what they sell. “Service history is obviously a big one,” he tells me. “If you’re buying from a main dealer and it’s a branded car see if the previous owner has had a history with the dealer or mechanic. In the bad old days there were a lot of cars sold which should not have been, but in this day and age every car will have been tested to make sure that it does what it says on the spec sheet. Ask about warranties: anything up to four years old will come with a dealer’s warranty, and a lot of main dealers will have the manufacturer’s warranty as well.

For instance a Volkswagen from us will come with oneyear warranty, roadside assistance, full history to make sure there’s nothing owing, that it’s not a write-off, that it’s not stolen; a multi-point check, test results and all the rest. That means that we’re confident enough to say that we’ll replace it with a car of similar value within 30 days or 1000km if an irreparable fault should develop. “When it comes to traders or private sellers, get an independent mechanic to check it out. You can also get the AA to do all the checks and inspections, for a fee. And make sure there’s at least a 12-month NCT if it’s over four years old. Again, that’s peace of mind and you’ll know the brakes, tyres, belts and all the safety items have been looked over. And finally, with any car from about five years old and 100,000 to 120,000km you need to make sure the timing belt has been replaced. Always ask about it, because if not then in three or four months you could be facing another bill for €400!”

Cork employee receives coveted

‘ŠKODA Salesperson of the Year’ award at national conference

Bandon dealership recognised for second successive year Declan Mahony, Brand Manager in Finbarr Galvin Ltd, Bandon has been awarded the prestigious ŠKODA Salesperson of the year award for 2014 beating off stiff competition from all other dealers in the ŠKODA network at the national conference in Wexford this week. A native of Dublin and living in Cork, Declan has been a key member of the Finbarr Galvin team since 2010 and has over 20 years motor trade experience. Declan delivers exceptional customer service and is consistently a top performer in all areas of the business. This award continues the high standards set by the Bandon dealership within the national network with Anthony Galvin, Aftersales Manager, Finbarr Galvin Ltd, claiming the prestigious Škoda Aftersales person of the year award for 2013. The showroom, located on the Clonakilty Road, Bandon has recently been revamped to reflect ŠKODA’s new design philosophy with a transformed interior and boasting a new integrated design and a new, state-of-the-art 3D car configurator.

Presenting the award, William Lee, Deputy Head of Sales, ŠKODA Ireland said “We are thrilled to announce Declan as the 2014 ŠKODA salesperson of the year. ŠKODA is one of the best-selling car brands in Cork and the determination of the soldiers on the front-line is absolutely vital to achieving this. As Brand Manager, Declan has many responsibilities and has proven himself as an extremely worthy award winner. Another point worth celebrating is that this is the second successive year that an employee of Finbarr Galvin Ltd has claimed a national award and great credit is due to dealer principal, Justin Galvin and all his team.” Commenting at the awards ceremony, Declan Mahony, Brand Manager, Finbarr Galvin Ltd, Bandon said “I am delighted to accept this award and be recognised by ŠKODA as Salesperson of the year. The standards in the ŠKODA network are very high so it is an honour to accept this award. Finbarr Galvin Ltd very much operates as a team which therefore makes this award a testament to the hard work and effort from each member of the dealership”.

Howard to join Munster Western Province centre Pat Howard is set to join Munster Rugby on a three-month contract. The 22-year-old South African will join Munster later in the month subject to passing the normal medical procedures. Due to knee injuries to Keith Earls and Cian Bohane, and the deferred arrival of Tyler Bleyendaal, head coach Anthony Foley

has called on the services of Howard to bolster the options available in midfield. Howard made his Western Province Currie Cup debut against Free State Cheetahs in August 2012 and has made 11 appearances in the competition. He featured for the South Africa U-20s in the 2012 Junior World Championship winning campaign,

where he lined out against an Ireland U-20s side that included Munster’s JJ Hanrahan and Niall Scannell. “With players ruled out due to injury and a few other niggles we want to make sure we have a full spread available to us before we enter the next crucial period,” said Foley, “and Howard can provide that additional support.”

Players return to City

A slam dunk weekend for Cork basketball

Cork City FC alumni John Kavanagh, Rob Lehane and Kevin O’Brien have signed back with the club for 2015. Midfielder Gavan Holohan has also joined City after a season with Drogheda United. Twenty-year-old Kavanagh said he has high hopes for the coming season, stating: “There’s nowhere else I want to be. The season we had last year was terrific, and hope-

fully we can push on again in 2015.” “It was nice to get a run towards the end of the season and play in a couple of big games, which was a good experience which I would hope to take into next year. We had a great season, but, as a team, we need to push on again and hopefully we can go one step further next season.” Holohan (22) stated that it didn’t take “much persuasion”

for him to sign with Cork City. “I want to help the team and maybe we can go one better than this season. It would be nice to get a good cup run as well, and maybe win a cup competition,” he said. “Personally, I would like to get as many games as possible under my belt and improve on the season I have had. I hope to chip in with a few goals and help the team push on for the title next year.”

Beara competing in the Cork Ladies Basketball League The first basketball team from Beara to compete in the Cork Ladies Basketball League will play their second home game of the season in Castletownbere this weekend. Last month, 13 girls from the Beara Peninsula made history, with the Under 16 girls team entered in the C League and playing their first match against Bantry in the local Castletownbere Community Hall. While this game signaled the start of the season for the players, it also marked a significant milestone for those involved in the formation and ongoing development of this new club. “It’s a great story as Beara Basketball Club fills a void for the sport in Cork,” said Ciaran O’Sullivan, basketball development officer at Cork Sports

Partnership. “In the future it will give young players from west of Bantry an opportunity to play games locally and further afield.” Beara play St Anthony’s at home this Sunday, November 16th at 2pm. There are a number of Cork teams in National Cup action this weekend, with C&S UCC Demons playing Killester BC at WA Clontarf, Dublin (7pm) in round one of the Men’s National Cup on Saturday, while BFG Neptune are up against UCD Marian BC at UCD Sports Centre at 8pm. In round one of the Senior Women’s National Cup, Ballincollig BC play Tolka Rovers BC at Tolka Rovers, Dublin at 6.30pm; Glanmire BC are against Portlaoise Panthers BC at St Mary’s Hall,

Laois at 7pm; and Brunell Ladies BC are against Meteors BC at Parochial Hall, Cork at 7.15pm. Fr Mathew’s opening game in the Senior Women’s National Cup has also been confirmed. The Cork side will face IT Carlow tomorrow, Saturday at Coláiste Chríost Rí at 7pm. In the President’s National Cup Fr Mathews play St Vincent’s BC at St Vincent’s Secondary School at 8pm while on Sunday, November 16th Singleton’s SuperValu Brunell play Team Montenotte Hotel in the quarter final of the Women’s National Cup at the Parochial Hall, Cork from 3.15pm. In round one of the President’s National Cup Blue Demons BC play LYIT Ravens at the Mardyke Arena from 2pm.

Do the dog on it this weekend The feature event at Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium this weekend is a stake valued at €1,000. Along with the Friends of Ballyclough 525 Stake tomorrow night

Saturday, there will 10 other fully-sponsored races on the night. Ballyclough GAA Club’s Night At The Dogs is the first of a number of fund-

raising events planned over the next coming years for the club. Tickets are available from Ballyclough GAA, priced at €10.

See the light A cracker of a cycle at Clondrohid Cork’s camogie and ladies football All-Ireland winner Briege Corkery with Santa (Jack Callanan) at the launch of the Marymount & Laura Lynn Hospice Christmas Cracker Charity Cycle. Picture by Neil Danton.

Saddle up for this year’s cracker of a charity cycle. Last year over 200 cyclists togged out in their best festive gear, and took the scenic route through west Cork for the Christmas Cracker Cycle to raise money for charity. This year, organisers are hoping for an even greater

response, and the event - in aid of Marymount University Hospital & Hospice and Laura Lynn Hospices - takes place on Saturday, December 6th. Participants have an option of a 6km mini cracker, a 65km midi cracker or an 85km maxi cracker route,

and cyclists can go at their own pace or join any of the mini pelotons which will pace around the routes. All participants are urged to wear something festive or add some Christmas decorations to their bikes, and all monies raised will go directly to the beneficiaries.

The lights for the track at Clondrohid are to be turned on next week. The facility at Garranenagappul, Macroom will see floodlights switched on this Monday, November 17th from 6pm to 8pm, subject to connection

to the network. The schedule for the week ahead will see the lights turned on from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, with a €2 fee for use of the track during this time. An updated schedule will be available from Clondrohid Astro’s Facebook page.

Nominated for Sexiest Music Video at the IMTV awards; and lauded by BBC radio DJ Tom Robinson, Corkbased Toy Soldier are going from strength to strength. The electro-rock trio’s new single Sugar is out now, and Play’s Maria Tracey chats to vocalist and guitarist Cian Walsh about how the band continues to soldier on.

T

hink of your favourite club night with Nine Inch Nails and Blondie mashing it up on the decks and that’s what Toy Soldier is all about. They combine dance floor grooves with rocking riffs. Formed when drummer Fergal McCarthy and lead guitarist Cian Walsh started jamming some acoustic tunes the latter had been working on, the line-up was completed when lead vocalist Fionnuala Curran came onboard. Having perfected their live performance in LA with early live shows in world renowned

Amazing Midweek Autumn Specials

venues such as The Viper Room and The Mint, Toy Soldier are now one of the most exciting bands on the live music scene, gaining a reputation for showmanship. The band was nominated for Sexiest Music Video at the IMTV awards in 2013 for their video Summertime while their single Animal was chosen as the official run-on song for Munster Rugby’s 2013/14 season. The band is now releasing the first song to be taken from their forthcoming EP, with the slick, super catchy Sugar out today, Friday. The EP Breathe will be released

in March next year. “It’s the first EP we have written as a collective,” says Walsh. “Up to this point, I would have written most of the songs myself. However, we decided it was time to start working together on things. It’s interesting to see how the creative process developed since we started working together. And the EP will surprise a lot of people, as it’s somewhat of a departure from what we have done up to this point. We are very excited about it ourselves.” Walsh outlines that Sugar, with an eye-catching video from Toy Soldier’s Indiepen-

dence performance this year, is the “more clubby track from the EP”. “I feel it’s going in the right direction,” he says. “Also the EP is a combination in a sense, a bit more of an organic and electronic sound, as up to this point we’ve been more electronic in our instrument choice. This is a bit more of both worlds.” The new sound can be heard by a Cork audience at the Crane Lane Theatre on Sunday, December 7th and The Blackbird in Ballycotton on Monday, December 15th. Toy Soldier is also touring nationwide, along with gigs in the UK and Berlin.

“It’s not an easy road; you do it because it’s all you want to do,” admits Walsh. “We will be going out to Berlin in the new year, for showcase gigs, and after the release will be gearing to the summer. It’s important to spread our wings as much as possible, as it would be foolish to think we can contain it here. If you keep playing Cork, people will get sick of you. International touring bands come to Ireland once a year, and don’t oversaturate themselves in Cork or Ireland. That’s something we are conscious of ourselves and it’s good to keep options open.”

The Assassin’s album

Sample Fruitcake

Carrigaline-based rapper The Assassin has released his debut album. The artist, whose real name is Maurice Coveney Jnr, has launched This Is Who I Am, with the songs ranging from different concepts such as injustices in society to love and life. “I always loved music from as long back as I can remember,” he said. “When I was eight, I used to stage Michael Jackson tribute concerts in my garden and sell tickets around my school.” The Assassin is also working on his debut crime fiction thriller Project Calm which is due to be published next year.

It’s a case of art imitating life as Mary McEvoy stars as a cookery school teacher in her one-woman show, Fruitcake, in Ballymaloe Grainstore. Audiences are well-accustomed to seeing Darina and Rachel Allen offer culinary coaching, but this is a demo with a dramatic difference. 14 15 Friday

English record producer DJ Fresh will be at The Savoy from 10.30pm. He’s lighting up the charts at the moment with hits such as Louder, Earthquake and Dibby Dibby Sound, and tickets for his Cork show are €17.65 from ticketmaster.ie.

Saturday

One-man arsenal of beats, tapped guitar and lush, textural melodies, Steve Strong will join Cork electronic rock duo Deadlights at The Gateway on Barrack Street. Doors for the Luchador Gigs & Venture Promotions free gig are at 8pm.

16 Sunday

Their songs of inspiration touch the depths of the soul and raise spirits to angelic heights. Having performed for Nelson Mandela at the Yankee Stadium, for the Pope in Central Park, and with the Chieftains on their US tour, the Harlem Gospel Choir will play the Everyman Theatre at 8pm. Tickets are €30 from everymancork.com.

18 Tuesday

Setting the stage on fire with a fabulous mix of fun and frolics, The Lady Boys Of Bangkok’s show Red Hot Kisses includes 16 of Thailand’s most beautiful and intriguing lady boys, performing a show like no other. Expect the usual truly glamorous and funny cabaret antics on stage at the Opera House, with tickets €27/€30 from corkoperahouse.ie.

Monday

They have appeared in Hot Press, have a residency in Whelan’s in Dublin, have played support to the Blind Boys Of Alabama (who said of them “I thought I was in church!”), featured on RTÉ Radio 1’s The John Creedon Show and also have a residency at The Franciscan Well. Blues virtuosos One Horse Pony, with their unique line-up of guitars, harmonica, double bass, bodhrán and low whistle, perform from 9.30pm with admission free.

Wednesday

Few can enrapture an audience the way Irish artist Wallis Bird can, going from delicate whispers to explosive cries in a heartbeat, and inciting rousing sing-alongs or spellbound silences. The folk-pop singer performs at the Half Moon Theatre, with doors at 8pm and admission €18.

Prepare to be taken on an enchanted journey through the Land of Snow to the magical Kingdom of the Sweets as Cork City Ballet, in association with Cork Opera House, presents a full length production of The Nutcracker this festive season. Opening this evening, the show runs until Saturday, November 22nd with tickets available from corkoperahouse.ie.
