Celia Holman Lee undergoes Revolutionary New Eye Treatment Medical advances mean that glasses are no longer the only solution for reading vision. Celia Holman Lee had a revolutionary eye treatment called Presbia to get rid of her reading glasses. The Fashion Stylist and TV Presenter had the procedure at leading eye clinic Optilase in September. Celia said, “I was fed up of struggling to read menus or my phone if I had forgotten or misplaced my reading glasses. When I found out there was a solution I decided to go for a consultation. To my delight, I was a suitable candidate. I had a wonderful experience at Optilase. The treatment was so easy and it was a complete new world afterwards. I can now see up close, far away in the distance and everything in between. It has
completely changed my life”. As we get older, we lose our near vision. If you find yourself holding this paper at arm’s length to read this article, then you will understand. Reading menus and texting are equally tricky, even more so if you are unlucky enough to have forgotten your reading glasses. The technical term for this loss of crispness of our near vision, as we get older is “presbyopia”. It’s a natural process that happens to everyone, usually from their mid40s, even if you have previously had laser vision correction. It’s simply part of the ageing process! Traditionally, most people with presbyopia use reading glasses to improve their near vision
but as we know, with reading glasses come numerous vision and lifestyle constraints. Being free from these constraints is the unique benefit of this revolutionary treatment. With Presbia Vision comes freedom, convenience and self-sufficiency, no more dependency on reading glasses. Is Presbia right for you? People suitable for the Presbia procedure are usually over 40 years old and are found to need reading glasses to view newspapers, mobile phone displays and similar items which would otherwise appear blurred. In other words anyone suffering from the age related vision loss. The loss of your near
vision doesn’t have to be the end of your on-the-go, mobile lifestyle. Not when the Presbia has the power to help millions of people around the world and possibly even you.
I can now see up close, far away in the distance and everything in between. It has completely changed my life Celia Holman Lee If you’re frustrated with trying to keep track of glasses, using contact lenses or stretching your arms past their limit, the Presbia offers the
hassle-free convenience you desire. Regardless of when or how your eyesight changed, the Presbia may be able to restore your near and intermediate vision – even if you are considering or already had LASIK or cataract surgery. Dr Wayne Crewe Brown, Surgeon and Medical Director at Optilase commented: “Presbia has been in development for over a decade and means lifechanging benefits for those who are dependent on reading glasses. It restores vision of objects near the eye and reduces dependency on reading glasses, critically without compromising on distance vision. The result is long-lasting, clear
vision; near, far and in between. The treatment is entirely painless and takes, on average, less than 10 minutes. Presbia is a tiny prescriptive lens, which is customised to your vision. Your near vision capability can be improved to see near, far and in between resulting in a greatlylessened dependency or zero reliance on reading glasses, depending on the individual. The team at Optilase are amongst the most experienced and qualified in the world. Anti-Irish Water protesters at the Silversprings Moran Hotel, Picture by Provision
Protesters disrupt Irish Water briefing “Serious questions” remain unanswered says Mayor By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
Disruption of an Irish Water briefing at the Silversprings Hotel in Cork has been labelled as “counterproductive” by the Cork County Mayor, who said management at the utility company were “left off the hook” after the meeting was forced to come to a close. Protesters broke up the meeting between Irish Water and councillors from Cork, Kerry and Clare who were to be briefed on the water charges. Councillor Alan Coleman stated the briefing should have been public representatives’ “first chance to meet Irish Water people face-toface” and that councillors had travelled a “fair distance” to be at the Silver Springs Moran Hotel. “They had very
serious questions to put directly to Irish Water and we were kind of denied the opportunity, really,” said the Fianna Fáil councillor. “It was counterproductive, as Irish Water got off the hook on facing councillors and answering serious questions about their own accountability, and their ability to communicate with the public. It disassembled into a bit of fiasco. It was very disappointing outcome to the whole affair.” Cllr Coleman stated that questions need to be put to Irish Water specifically relating to “inaccurate information” along with security concerns concerning PPS numbers. “They don’t have a data protection officer in place; why is that the case? How are they to manage the PPS situation and why do they want them? These are
the serious questions,” he outlined. He stated that it’s his belief Irish Water will now be going directly to Cork’s local authorities - County Hall and City Hall - to address councillors. Workers’ Party councillor Ted Tynan outlined that he supported the disruption. He stated that he had joined protestors from Mayfield Says No to Water Charges & Privatisation beforehand, and the group then made its way to the hotel’s convention centre. “I went up to the table and registered and came back to the group. For me there’s only one item on the agenda I’m concerned with; bringing water back under public ownership,” he said.

Double, double, toil and trouble!
Editor’s letter
I
t’s been a highly contentious week in Cork, and what’s more the city has managed to pack everything into four days after the (remarkably well behaved, incredibly busy and wildly successful) jazz-filled long weekend. One thing, however, has dominated the hearts and minds of Corkonians, as it’s dominated discussion, debate and media attention nationwide: Water. In what I’m prepared to bet is a sign of climbdowns yet to come, the deadline for the submission of those infamous ‘packs’ - PPS numbers and all - has been extended. The nice lady with the soft voice on the radio ads almost makes it sound like this is a huge favour, but of course the real reason is that the men and women who tread the floor at Leinster House seem to have realised that they’re on the receiving end of almost unprecedented public outrage, and similarly seismic non-compliance. I am not in favour of anyone breaking the law: if the deadline had been today, I would be exhorting you to fill in your forms, however objectionable, send them in, be in compliance and deal with the myriad issues they raise afterwards. That’s what I was going to do. Between now and the end of November, however, I’ll hold my horses and see what else might fall into - or out of - place. As you’ve read in our cover story by Maria Tracey, the public’s stance against the water charges hardened further in Cork as we were preparing to go to print. Luckily, and sensibly, there was no violence (I would be writing a very different letter if there had been), but the voice of the gathered crowd rang out loud and clear: Cork says “no”. With further massive protests planned in every major town and city in the country over the weekend, it remains to be seen just how loudly we can shout. Before the dramatic scenes at the Silversprings, I had intended to write about Halloween, and the sense of mischief and fun that’s evident on the streets of Cork. Obviously I won’t expound at length about it now, but I will make two quick personal pleas: Drivers, there will be small children packed full of sugar and excitement doing the rounds, tricking and treating for all they’re worth. Be mindful of them. Parents, don’t let your little ones go out alone. Make sure they’re visible to drivers at all times, and please don’t let them forget that roads, even in estates and quiet neighbourhoods, can be dangerous places! Elsewhere we have all the old reliables; George Hook takes aim squarely at Gerry Adams and Sinn Féin in Hook Uncorked, Seán Creedon gets zippy in Seat’s fun new Leon, Play sees PJ Gallagher make the leap from stand-up to sitting still with a new role in a play at The Everyman, and if you have a sweet tooth and enjoy pottering around the kitchen, then this week’s Menu definitely comes highly recommended. Enjoy!

Cork’s Roma fearful after Waterford incident By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
Fear is growing amongst Cork’s Roma community after anti-Roma demonstrations turned violent in Waterford. However, the local immigrant support centre has stressed that creation of Facebook pages - such as the one in Waterford, which was set up after a spate of crime in the locality and prompted a group of almost 200 people to descend on a Roma-occupied house - are not being “initiated from Cork”.
Jennifer DeWan, campaigns and communications officer for Nasc, said the Cork centre has “chatted” with members of the Roma community about the incident in Waterford and, like last year when two Roma children were removed from their families in Tallaght and Athlone, there is a level of fear. “Fortunately we’re not seeing that vigilantism happening here, that’s a positive in any case,” she said, in reference to the mob violence in Waterford. “Whether that means the Roma families here are a bit more integrated or maybe people are just more
conscious that this sort of action can’t happen, we certainly will be keeping our eyes peeled and in touch with the community to make sure everyone is feeling safe.” Ms DeWan stated that Nasc is continually working on combating online racism, particularly on Facebook. She stated that legislation needs to be tightened as there “isn’t anything in place to effectively respond” to online racism. “We have never seen before such a clear example of why it’s important to combat online hate speech. There was such a clear movement from
online to physical violence, as after a very short amount of time it managed to incite people to literally go to a house and break windows. It’s quite terrifying,” she said. Ms DeWan added that while the specific details of what happened to incite the demonstration in Waterford are not fully known, “an entire community cannot be linked to the potential criminality of individual people” regardless. “Making a link between Roma and criminality is racism. We are horrified by it,” she concluded.
Protesters disrupt Irish Water briefing continued from page 1 “I wasn’t prepared to come along and be briefed with gobbledygook. There’s a massive revolt among the people out there and I will stand with them and fight this to the bitter end.” Cllr Tynan added: “I supported the disruption of the meeting on the basis that Irish Water was trying to turn it into a private meeting between public representatives. Because of the seriousness of
what’s happening, I’d support the right of those people coming in.” A protester at the meeting, Rob Galligan of the Right2Water movement, stated the group was mostly concerned parents questioning the PPS numbers situation, whether Irish Water is to be privatised, and the situation regarding landlords and tenants: “Some people are asking was the meeting stormed or hijacked but we’re saying that the water supply has also been hijacked and stormed,” he said,
adding that the charges come after “several savage budgets”, with many people “now on the breadline”. There were further standoffs in relation to the water charges in Cobh, as three protesters were arrested at Woodside, Rushbrooke Manor. Cobh woman Evelyn Roche outlined there’s an informal agreement in the town between Irish Water contractors and protesters that meters are not installed in houses with signs indicating opposition to the charges. She claimed
that this agreement was adhered to up until Thursday. “We were all standing on the stopcocks, and three were arrested,” she said. Ms Roche stated the people of Cobh are “adamant” that water charges “are not happening”. The Cork demonstrations come as Right2Water Ireland preapres to hold a nationwide protest tomorrow, Saturday, with the Cork march gathering at the Grand Parade from 2pm. 49 additional protests are scheduled to take place simultaneously around Ireland.

Shopping online for Christmas? Be careful! Cork’s online Christmas bargain hunters are being urged to be vigilant in the run up to the Christmas period. Gerry Murray, country manager for EMC Ireland, which has its centre of excellence here in Cork, has advised consumers to be vigilant at all times when transacting online, especially with surges in cybercrime at Christmas. “In the run up to the Christmas period, consumers must be especially wary when they purchase goods and services online. Cybercriminals employ a wide variety of scams designed to take advantage of our generosity and willingness to spend more in the festive period,” he said. “These can include appealing special offers on gifts; coupons; and competitions for expensive gadgets and seasonal getaways. These scams will subtly ask for your financial details, or personal information that can be used to steal your identity.

Free parking in Cork Free parking at City Council car-parks continues for a further three weeks to encourage shoppers into Cork. Paul Street Car Park and North Main Street Car Park have free parking Mondays to Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon until

Funding for north Cork North Cork environmental projects have received funding as part of the 2014 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund scheme, Glantane Community Council; Liscarroll Community Council; Lombardstown Community Council and Millstreet Tidy Towns have each received €1,000. Mallow Tidy Towns
secured €1,100; while Mournabbey Residents Trust Community Council; Newmarket Town Development Association; and Newtownshandrum Tidy Towns each received €1,500. The scheme is designed to increase local levels of environmental awareness and help local communities become more sustainable.

“When you do buy online, make sure to inspect each website for signs of untrustworthiness or fraud: a suspicious URL, especially one linked in an unsolicited email, or lack of secure encryption at the payment processing
screen—represented by a padlock or shield icon in your address bar—suggest that the site is not safe and is a potential scam. Even a poorly designed website can point to a fraudulent merchant.” Mr Murray stated that those
“not convinced” of a website’s authenticity should opt for a more renowned brand, or do research online. “Use social media, or sites like boards.ie to see if other consumers share your concerns,” he said.

Cork has the spookiest places in Ireland A Kinsale fort and a former prison in Cork have been named as the spookiest destinations in Ireland to spend Halloween. Charles Fort in Kinsale, home to the infamous White Lady, was picked by the travel experts of Hotels.com as one of
ghastliest, ghouliest places to spend Halloween along with the monolithic and forbidding Cork City Gaol. Charles Fort was built in the 17th century, during the reign of Charles II, and the story goes that one of the fort’s soldiers married a lo-
cal girl and spent their wedding in the fort. The following day, the soldier fell asleep on duty and was shot at his post by a fellow combatant for the misdemeanour. His bride, upon hearing the news, jumped to her
death from the fort’s walls, and is said to still haunt the fort to this day. Paranormal buffs say Cork City Gaol, which opened in 1824 and closed in 1923, has a resident female ghost who roams the building wearing a green shawl.
at thecounsellingcentre.ie/ fundraising-events. Neither the gaol nor the charity can be held responsible if you’re unlucky enough - or lucky enough, depending on your point of view - to be scared out of your wits by a supernatural apparition!
Ghost enthusiasts will be hoping for an appearance tonight, Friday, as a charity Halloween fancy dress party in aid of the Cork Counselling Centre will be held at the gaol. Tickets can be purchased from 021 4274951 or online

Corkonians’ bravery recognised Two Cork men who risked their lives in separate sea rescues to save others have received National Bravery Awards. Corkman Richard Galvin was awarded a bronze medal and certificate of bravery after he rescued a person who got into difficulty at Crookhaven in August 2012, while west Cork’s Mark O’Mahony was honoured for his rescue of three men who got into difficulty in swirling currents near Ballydehob in May last year. Mark was swimming near the shore when he heard the three men’s cries for help following the sinking of their small vessel, and after telling his wife to raise the alarm, he got into his kayak and reached one of the swimmers in spite of a broken paddle, strong tides and gusting winds. Two lifeboats from Baltimore RNLI soon arrived and Mr O’Mahony pointed them in the direction of the other two swimmers. In a separate ceremony, the rescue crew who risked their lives after the Tit Bonhomme sank in west Cork were also recognised for their heroic efforts, along with members of the local community who

Cork drama bound for the airwaves By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie
Dublin may have Love/ Hate, but Cork will be getting its own iconic series as an original drama set Leeside is being commissioned by RTÉ. (R)onanism, the story of Ronan, a man who’s involved in a romantic relationship with himself, written by Tadhg Hickey and directed by Shaun O’Connor, is one of five original dramas being commissioned by RTÉ Drama and the Irish Film Board for the new season of Storyland. Now in its fifth season, Storyland has proven to be a successful commissioning
platform to bring fresh creative ideas to RTÉ, and identify emerging creative talent for the TV and film industry in Ireland. Each of the five chosen series will be commissioned in full, consisting of four six-minute episodes. Filming of (R)onanism took place at various locations around Cork, and the series is produced by Deirdre Levins and the Oscar-winning (for the short film Six Shooter) production company Fantastic Films. Mr O’Connor told The Cork News that the commission is a “huge step” for Tadhg and himself: “We have been plugging away with short films for years now and building up a

network of crew we work with regularly in Cork,” he said. “We made a submission this year for Storyland and we got the support from Fantastic Films. It was a good year for us, as our short film Uisce Beatha was shown at film
festivals, and I guess we appeared on a couple of radars.” He stated that filming of (R)onanism took place over the course of six days in Ballinlough, the Japanese Garden, Blarney Castle and the Triskel Christchurch. “It was
quite ambitious for a project of its size but we did want to do something fast and entertaining,” said Mr O’Connor. “We’re working on the edit at the moment and will be submitting it to RTÉ to look at it quite soon.” The pair are also working on a new short film, Pat, starring d’Unbelievables star Jon Kenny and broadcaster John Creedon, shot over three days in Roberts Cove and Crosshaven. Mr O’Connor stated there’s “top notch stuff ” coming out of Cork. “It’s a tipping point now, and there will be something big to come out, something completely set, written for and produced in Cork that will really represent the city and county and hopefully get a national viewership,” he added. Drama development executive at RTÉ Television David Crea outlined that both Love/ Hate and Amber “show that there’s an enormous appetite in Ireland for great drama”. “Storyland is a big part of that story. These five brand new commissions are a real chance for writers, directors and producers to make a drama that is wholly original and can engage and delight its audience. It’s a launch-pad for drama makers to grow and become the hit makers of tomorrow,” he said.

Hook uncorked 'Something is rotten in the State' says George Hook, who has no stomach for the smell of hypocrisy... george@thecorknews.ie
N
othing suffocates the senses quite like the overwhelming stench of hypocrisy. It is a strange sensation, uncovering a hypocrite; like a gush of revulsion seeping from one’s pores. The human system struggles to process hypocrisy because it carries at its core an unnatural shiver and it cuts across the very essence of mankind. Hypocrites are liars. They say one thing and do the opposite. Hypocrites preach the gospel before supping with the devil. Theirs is an eager voice until their falsity is exposed. And then, like the naked emperor laid bare on the street, the rest of us can see the truth behind the fake bravado; the depressing reality behind the mirage. Gerry Adams is drowning in his own hypocrisy. The damage to Sinn Féin in the latest opinion polls, over allegations of abuse by republicans, reflects the growing anger of a disillusioned public. Adams, leader of the charge against the government and town crier for political reform, has lost all credibility. Does the Sinn Féin leader not realise his culpability in failing to notify the relevant authorities if Máiria Cahill approached him with allegations of rape and sexual abuse at the hands of senior republicans? Is it reasonable to believe that Adams believes he has done nothing wrong? Adams is an intelligent man, after all; a seasoned politician. But even the most powerful palate would struggle to stomach this latest shocking scandal without reaching for a bucket. You see this time, the problem will not go away. This time, the ‘problem’ for Adams and his followers will not be swayed from her task or sent packing from the limelight. Màiria Cahill is a strong, determined woman and she
“The credibility of Sinn Féin as a genuine alternative to the current government is now beyond repair as long as Gerry Adams remains leader.”

demands justice for the suffering she has endured. Cahill will not go quietly into the night and she will not be frightened into submission. And how does Adams respond to this woman’s cries of pain and suffering? Does he apologise unreservedly and promise a full, thorough and immediate investigation?
No. Instead of tending to the victim and pledging support, Adams goes on an offensive charge against political rivals for politicising the case. I have seen some disproportionate and outrageous reactions in my time, but this latest stroke by Sinn Féin takes some beating. Under what circumstances is it jus-
tifiable to treat allegations of rape and abuse with an attack on innocent third parties for refusing to let the issue die away? Adams handling of Cahill’s pain and suffering has been sickening in the extreme. This is a man who has spent his entire political career campaigning and fighting for the
poor, the working class, the weak and the vulnerable in society, and yet when one of the most vulnerable comes forward looking for his help, and it seems that he has turned his back on her and cried foul. Even the most ardent republicans must be shifting uncomfortably in their seats

at the way Sinn Féin has handled this whole affair. Mary Lou McDonald, up to now a pillar of strength in Sinn Féin’s attack on the government, has let herself down badly with her uninformed and blind support for her party leader. The damage to Adams reputation is irrevocable. Furthermore, the credibility of Sinn Féin as a genuine alternative to the current government is now beyond repair as long as Gerry Adams remains leader of the party. And how democratic is Sinn Féin if it sees itself as the sole judge and jury on morality and criminality when it suits their purpose? If Sinn Féin contests the next general election with Adams peering down from political posters, asking for your vote, what will you do? If a tick on the ballot paper is an endorsement for a party with a track record in being, in its history, economical with the truth, how can Sinn Féin ever hope to get elected to government? Now, for the first time, Sinn Féin members must decide what it is they want for the long term future of the party. If their ultimate goal is to protect Adams at any cost and stand by a defunct leader, nothing will change. Will they cringe again and allow Mr. Adams to bluster and doubletalk them into submission? If the party is serious about progressing up the political ladder and if it wants to be taken seriously by the citizens of this country, it must act now in the interests of salvaging its battered reputation. Otherwise, the long, damaging cloak of Adams’ hypocrisy will smother Sinn Féin’s ambitions for as long as he remains in situ. In the meantime, I can only hope that Máiria Cahill gets the dignity of a meaningful resolution and a public apology from those who covered up her abuse. It is the very least that she deserves.

Cork has become a city of savers The lessons of the last six years have left a discernable effect on the spending and saving patterns of Corkonians, leaving us measurably more prudent and frugal then we were even before the excesses of the Celtic Tiger. Even though the economy is getting back to normal, 71% say they plan to cut back even more on non-essentials while 57% are looking to make greater savings on household bills and expenses. 95% are sensible enough to shop around in order to find the best price for a product rather than just snapping an item up at first sight. A staggering 89% of women have cut back on buying clothes in 2014, as have 81% of men. Nearly half of Cork’s women are embracing secondhand and vintage clothing to secure bargains. Eight out of 10 are making more meals from scratch and some 73% of people say they’ve dined ‘al desko’ by taking a packed lunch to work. One in five have opted for a BYO restaurant over the last year, while 24% have car-pooled and 29% have cycled to cut down on costs. Challenges still exist for most
71% plan to keep on cutting back savers, with only 23% managing to put money aside on a regular monthly basis in spite of their best-laid plans. Lots of
us have discovered that some things are just worth spending money on, too, with nearly one in five admitting to having
cost themselves money in the long run by scrimping on car repairs, 26% of women saying they’ve ruined clothes by try-
ing their hand at tailoring and one in ten seriously regretting that time they gave themselves a haircut.

Ballet superstars for Cork’s Nutcracker World-renowned prima ballerina Erina Takahashi from the English National Ballet will star in Cork City Ballet’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker at Cork Opera House, directed by Alan Foley. The ballet will be performed on November 20th, 21st and 22nd at 8pm with a matinee at 2.30 pm on Saturday 22nd. Ms Takahashi, who will
dance the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy, will be partnered by Jan Erik Wikstrom from the Royal Swedish Ballet. For this festive production, Cork City Ballet will lead the audience on an enchanting journey through the Land of Snow to the magical Kingdom of the Sweets. The Nutcracker will be choreographed by the Bolshoi’s Yury Demakov.
A Cork-born writer and director is to launch his first feature film deep beneath the surrounds of Crosshaven’s Camden Fort Meagher for Halloween. Conor Slattery’s Beau Diable will be screened tonight, Friday and tomorrow, Saturday in the tunnel complex. The film concerns a group of young holidaymakers on a pleasure cruise, who come to the assistance of a stranded and seemingly helpless figure adrift in a dingy. This innocent act soon turns into a nightmare as the stranger turns out to be a ruthless psychopath, named Beau, who hijacks the boat and forces them to sail to a mysterious island. “The film is an analogy of what is going on in our country at the moment. The island is Ireland, the young innocents are the Irish people,” said Mr Slattery, joking that people can “draw their own conclusions” as to who the “psychopathic demons in relentless pursuit” are. Mr Slattery, who grew up in Crosshaven, was given access to Camden Fort Meagher for filming across three weeks in the summer of 2013. “The idea

Save your breath Nearly 200 people in Cork city and county died from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - also known as COPD - in 2013. A new national awareness campaign, Save Your Breath, has been launched by COPD Support Ireland to encourage people to know the symptoms and to visit their doctor if they have concerns. The campaign will visit the The River Lee Hotel on Western Road in Cork on Friday, November 21st from 11am to 3pm, offering free COPD screening to people over 35 years who are experiencing the typical symptoms of COPD: persistent coughing, breathlessness and/or frequent chest infections. Staff will also be on hand to provide quit smoking support, nutrition tips, and exercise, breathing and inhaler technique advice. The initiative coincides with World COPD Day on November 19th.
COPD includes conditions such as bronchitis and emphysema, and results in shortness of breath, tiredness and reduced exercise ability because the airways in the lungs are obstructed. Early diagnosis can help people avoid more difficult forms of the disease and thereby enjoy a much better quality of life. In Ireland deaths from respiratory disease are third only to deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer. Bones O’Sullivan of Cork COPD Support Group said “COPD can affect people in so many ways in their daily lives, and for some it can mean significant difficulty with simple physical activities such as crossing a room, climbing stairs or carrying out household chores. This campaign is about encouraging people to, quite literally, save their breath, and take action now to protect their future health and quality of life.”
Remember Revenue Today, Friday October 31st, is the deadline for self-assessed tax returns and, in the light of a rise in Revenue interventions and compliance checks, if you’re a self-assessed tax payer it’s very much in your own interest to make sure that every “i” is dotted and every “t” is crossed. It should
be sobering news that this year Revenue say they’ll be making a special effort to pursue individuals who file late - or who don’t file at all! Last year alone saw 626,561 interventions and a total of 484 criminal prosecutions, netting €548 million for the exchequer.

Better safe than sorry As the evenings draw in and it’s dark for longer than it’s bright, people - especially those living in rural areas or elderly people who live alone - are being encouraged to ensure that their homes are secure against burglars who may try to take advantage of the longer nights. Since this time in 2013, the Central Statistics Office says that well over 26,000 burglaries took place around Ireland. The first six months of 2014 alone saw almost 18,000 burglaries - well on track to overtake the previous year if the trend continues - of which a total of 664 were reported to gardaí in Cork. “This is peak season for burglaries” said Eoin Dunne, managing director of PhoneWatch. “With the cover of darkness providing added protection for burglars, darker evenings also make it easier for intruders to identify unoccupied homes. Though many break-ins are often opportunistic, the lead up to Christmas provides an added incentive for targeted home intrusions.” Very often, simple precautions can make the difference between security or invasion. The most obvious solution, of course, is to ensure that all doors and windows - including those on upper floors - are locked whenever you’re not in
“This is peak season for burglaries... the leadup to Christmas provides an added incentive”
the house and before you go to bed. Many burglars won’t enter a house if someone is there, but some will, and will hope that you’re a heavy sleeper. Many Cork residents are in the habit of leaving a key out “just in case” but, as gardaí and security specialists will tell you, this is a terrible idea. Even if you think you’re being clever and hiding it well, odds are you’ve left it somewhere
quite obvious and an experienced burglar will know exactly where to look. It doesn’t have to be under the mat or under ‘the big stone in the garden’ to be easy to find. Fitting timers to light switches, and even to televisions or radios, can make a big difference. These are options which are especially worth considering if you plan on being away for a few days at a time or overnight. Some modern timers can even connect to the internet using your house’s WiFi and can be operated remotely from your smartphone, giving you an extra degree of comfort and control. For added security, for instance in rural areas, sensor lights and a monitored alarm are a necessity. If you live alone, invest in a door chain and never allow a stranger into your house, but be sure you are used to removing it in a hurry in case you need to get out at any stage, for instance in the event of a fire. And remember, neighbourhoods and community are not a thing of the past, no matter what people say. If you’re going to be away for a while, let your neighbours know and ask them to keep an eye on your house, and if you’re not already part of a neighbourhood watch scheme consider joining one or even setting one up.

Revolutionary New Hair Transplants Now Available in Cork Would you like to get your hair back? Millions of people around the world are now benefiting from the life changing results of hair transplants.
BY GERALDINE FITZGERALD
Wayne Rooney did men everywhere a huge favour when he tweeted openly about his own hair transplant. It did a lot to eradicate outdated concerns about transplant surgery, removing lingering taboos amongst men, who are traditionally more reticent than women about considering self-improvement. Celebrities have been vocal in acknowledging their transplant results; James Nesbitt; Louis Walsh; Jason Gardiner, while some like Gordon Ramsay, have kept it under their hat until the aesthetically pleasing results merited comment. Phenomenal advances in restoration surgery techniques provide undetectable, completely natural results. Therapie Hair Restoration is now offering a new revolutionary exclusive technique to Ireland.
■ Alan Boyce, CEO of Toni & Guy in Ireland recently had a hair transplant
Men go bald because they have testosterone-sensitive receptors on the hair follicles at the front and top of their heads. Hormonal changes, predetermined by genetics, mean they lose that hair and go bald. It happens to over 70% of Irish men, (and 40% of women), often as young as their twenties.
The team was incredibly professional, the work, top class! And here I am a year later. I got my hair back and my confidence back! Alan Boyce, CEO Toni & Guy Ireland The hair at the back and sides of the head does not have these receptors, so keeps growing normally. It’s these abundant tresses that are used as donor hair, through thousands of tiny grafts in a procedure known as Elite Follicle Unit Extraction, and implanted in the recipient bald area. The implanted hair won’t fall out, as it doesn’t have the testosterone sensitivity of the original hair lost to male pattern baldness. The hair continues to grow strong and healthy, and depending on the growth rate of each patient, you’ll see results within 6 months to a year. Most patients just keep a clipped hairstyle until it all grows out at the same rate, so it’s not noticeable. Alan Boyce, CEO of Toni & Guy
had a hair transplant at Therapie Hair Restoration. As the CEO of the Toni & Guy hair salons in Ireland, Alan is in the business of helping others to look good; maximising and maintaining beautiful hair. It was particular galling for him to discover that he was losing his own, and in a business where much time is spent with clients on front of a mirror, he was very aware of his thinning hair. “It was beginning to have quite an impact on me, so I spent a lot of time researching the possibility of hair restoration surgery, but it wasn’t until I found Therapie Hair Restoration and met the team that I felt I’d found the right surgeon,“ says Alan. It’s now been over a year since Alan’s hair restoration surgery, and he is delighted with the results. “The team was incredibly professional, the work, top class! And here I am a year later. I got my

Family Trigger’s broom inspires exhibition fun at “Trigger claims to UCC have owned UCC’s Cork Family Open Day will kick-off Celebrate Science week on Sunday November 9th in the UCC Western Gateway building with over 30 different workshops and displays for adults and children. Children young and old can explore Lego robotics, photonics, disgusting digestion (always a big hit), maths magic and other workshops. There will be dancing robots, electric cars and lots of raspberry pi. For the adults there will be tours of the UCC Brewery & Bakery and the world-renowned FLAME lab, where future doctors learn about the human body. Meanwhile, IPIC@Tyndall will hold its open evening from 7-9pm on Wednesday 12th November, with public forums covering global warming, C-sections and the threat posed by superbugs.
It’s not often that the worlds of philosophy, classic television comedy and art can come together effectively, but a group of Cork students has managed to build an entire exhibition around doing just that. A paradox explored by Del Boy, Rodney and Trigger on Only Fools and Horses raises the question of whether an object which has had all its components replaced remains fundamentally the same, and is the seed behind a collaborative exhibition by students of CIT Crawford College of Art & Design. In a much-loved episode, dim-witted Trigger (played by the late Roger LloydPack) proudly claims to have owned the same broom for 20 years, but admits that in that time it has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles. It’s a perfect example of what philosophers call the ‘Ship of Theseus’ paradox, and therein lies the common ground between philosophy, comedy and art explored by the MA in Art & Process artists: that the concept is as important as the objects they make.

Daytripper Motivational speaker Aimee Foley, 28, lives in Midleton with her mother Deirdre. Her Facebook page 'Ireland Wake Up See The Stripes' is about increasing awareness of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
“
My first thought is usually pain; an uncomfortable pain from injuring myself in the night. Straight away I think ‘I’m going to fight another day, I’m going to choose life’. You could go under the covers and stay there, and there’re days I feel that it’s too much, but I just get on with it. I get that from my mother and grandmother. My gran is 96 and suffers from dementia, but dresses herself every morning and puts on makeup. That’s definitely rubbed off on me. The alarm is set at 7am regardless of what’s happening. I tend to keep a routine, and even if I’m sick, I’ll still get up. First thing is to take medication for blood pressure and stay lying down for 30 minutes. Then the compression stockings go on before getting out of bed. Breakfast is porridge, toast, fruit, green tea and a nutritional supplement. Usually I put on the telly for half an hour, onto something like Sky News. I watched the Oscar Pistorius trial religiously. There’s always administration work to be done and I should be working for the HSE as I’m constantly scanning, printing, and sending things off! I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, but was only diagnosed in May last year. When I left school, I took a year out and went to Greece, and was sick a lot there. Six months after coming home, I had a seizure. The doctors said they saw something and I prepared for the worst but it turned out it wasn’t a tumour. Instead they thought it could be epilepsy. That devastated me more because suddenly I felt control over my life go. For 18 months I couldn’t drive, my dream of being cabin crew had to be left go, and as I had more seizures, I needed someone with me all the time. I was ageing backwards. It turned out to be a misdiagnosis and six years later, when I

was actually diagnosed with EDS, I breathed a sigh of relief. I think it’s only now that it’s starting to take its toll on me. In order to cope with everything, I literally went into fight mode. However, you can only do that for so long before it catches up with you. There’s no cure, and the best I can hope for is remission. People look at me and say ‘you look great’ but I’m literally falling apart on the inside. It’s affecting all my organs, except my brain, thank God. I

Physio is key, getting the muscles into the best possible condition. The joints are like spaghetti so you’ve to make sure the muscles can hold the body upright. I do a mix of Pilates and physio at home and I’m in
the process of getting a static bike. Along with the hour and a half of phyiso, there’s also a programme of learning how to sit, breathe, and swallow properly. Lunch is a tuna jacket, an egg and toast, or bruschetta. I try and get all the admin done before lunch and do something enjoyable after-
wards, like cooking. I make things like stuffed vegetables; baked feta with peppers and tomatoes; a Greek casserole; my signature dish, risotto; or paella. I usually take a photograph afterwards and blog about it on Instagram, under @lovelifefoodfitness. That’s my thing, food and fitness. I’ve also designed a website,

but when I set it to go live, I realised that I had to put content on it, so I took it down before it was noticed! It’s ‘Choose Life Love You’- my mantra - and my vision is to have it about food and healthy living. Every evening I meditate before dinner, and then after eating I’ll watch a couple of

shows. I’ll also do some physio again, go for a walk or read a book. There’s also Facebook to update, my Ireland Wake Up See The Stripes page, which I set up after being diagnosed. The name comes from the zebra, the symbol of rare diseases. There’s a term used that doctors expect to see horses, not zebras, so what needs to happen is for everyone to wake up and see what’s rare. On weekends, I spend time with my fiancé Steve, as he works nights during the week. We go to the cinema or dinner, nothing too mad. He’s brilliant, and we’ve the same mad sense of humour. At around 11pm I head to bed and do some brain training, and I’m learning Spanish; my thing for 2015. I’ve also just started studying for my exams in social science. I’d love to be an advocate for those who can’t stand up for themselves and my goal now is to get that diploma in my hand, and show people they can do it. Before heading to sleep, I do progressive relaxation exercises, which involves tensing the muscles and slowly releasing them. My last thought is letting go of negativity. Turning a negative to a positive has been my defining moment, as honestly, my EDS diagnosis was the making of me. I was really shy before that but when I got diagnosed, it was almost like a hand on my shoulder telling me I could now relax, and be myself. I’m very much about the glass being half full. I always have hope, because if you don’t have that, you don’t have anything. I know there won’t be a cure in my lifetime, but I hope there’ll be a time that things can be managed and maybe I can get back working. My biggest fear is that I won’t ever work again. I don’t see myself as Aimee the sick girl. Instead I’m Aimee Foley and EDS is something I happen to have. You have to let yourself shine as best you can.”

Tree cheers for Joanne, Rachel and Bill Inspirational speaker Joanne O’Riordan has revealed that, much like her own life, an oak tree in her native Millstreet has had “its ups and downs”. The oak has battled “storms, constant threats, and everything imaginable” according to Joanne. As part of the National Tree Hugger Contest, 15 people from across the country have put forward their 15 favourite trees, which will be voted on by the public. The tree with the most votes will be Ireland’s nomination for European Tree of the Year 2015. Joanne, who has total amelia - a congenital birth condition causing the absence of all four limbs - revealed exactly why the oak, which is located in Millstreet Town Park, is her personal favourite: “My tree is important to me as it was set by the Boys National School at Easter in 1997,” she explained. “The students at the time and the principal, Jim Bradley, decided to set this tree in honour of me. The tree was, in their words, like me. At the start it was small and delicate, almost like me as a baby. “As the tree grew, so did I.
“We now both stand tall and proud and together we will continue to grow and tackle life.”
The oak tree grew to extraordinary heights and so did I. The tree was like a new companion for me: as it grew, so did I and the tree and I are continuing to grow as time goes along.” Joanne, who has addressed
the United Nations, added she believes the stories behind the tree and her is one of “growth, power and determination”. “Yes, we might have obstacles and other things thrown at us, but the two of us have overcome ev-
erything. We now both stand tall and proud and together we will continue to grow and tackle life,” she said. Two more trees from County Cork have made it to the shortlist. TV chef Rachel Allen revealed that her fa-
vourite tree is a weeping willow in Ballymaloe’s back garden. “For me it encompasses all that I hold dear. It is nurturing, inviting, caring, cosy and it renews my spirit each time I pass it by on my way to the kitchen,” she said.

Cork native says Ebola response must be coordinated A Ballincollig woman who spent nearly a month coordinating relief efforts to tackle the Ebola crisis in west Africa has said governments, UN agencies and international teams need to do more to stop the spread of the disease, which she says is “a global emergency”. Sarah Murphy, a humanitarian logistics adviser for Save The Children, was the emergency logistics manager at the Ebola Treatment Centre in Kerry Town, Sierra Leone and has since returned to work in the UK. The level of public understanding in Europe about Ebola, she says, is still influenced by hyperbole and over reaction. “I’ve been a little taken aback at the suspicion’” she told The Cork News. “People half-jokingly asked if I should actually be in quarantine, if it’s safe to hug me, should I not work from home for 21 days and so on. While the public concern is a real one, the lack of public-education on Ebola – its rate of infection, the risk of contraction – and myth-busting has been a real and dangerous factor in some quarters.” Sarah called Ebola an “equal

opportunities virus” and said the atmosphere in Sierra Leone is calm but tense: “Across west Africa, communities are subdued and scared. Unlike sudden natural disasters, there is very little visible evidence of the crisis. Instead, there’s a palpable spectre of fear. Communities are acutely
aware of the lack of healthcare facilities available to cope with the speed of transmission. In Sierra Leone there is only 1 doctor per 40,000 people, in Liberia that figure is 1 for every 100,000.” In spite of the infectious nature of Ebola, Ms Murphy said that she felt in control

of her personal safety at all times while in Africa: “I felt fully prepared,” she stated. “Save the Children had provided dedicated pre-departure trainings and briefings, and I felt in control of my level of risk and exposure to ensure I stayed healthy in order to do critical, urgent work. We didn’t touch another person (no handshakes or hugs), regular washing of hands with chlorine solution, regular temperature checks, staying aware; all of these actions minimised my risk of infection and made it very unlikely. It is quite simple to protect yourself and break the transmission.” The logistics adviser also pointed out that her own experiences have left her in a better position to quash unwarranted fears about the consequences of an Ebola patient arriving in Ireland, but cautioned that the HSE must remain vigilant and work with international agencies to hone the State’s response to any patients in whom the virus is detected. She also said that public fears about traffic to and from affected areas must be addressed: “We need to assuage the exaggerated
fears of many, explain why the risk to them is incredibly low, and why they need to support and not be wary of the clinical and operational workers who return from Ebola-affected countries. I would strongly advise that the HSE infection control team plan and co-ordinate with input by experts from the WHO, London School of Tropical Medicine and people who have handson experience in managing Ebola-affected patients. This is one area where everyone involved is willing to share everything they’ve learnt on managing Ebola – this is a global emergency, and we need to respond in a united and co-ordinated manner.” Sarah Murphy’s comments come as the Disaster Emergency Committee, an amalgamation of 13 Irish and UK agencies at the forefront of international crisis response, launches a fresh appeal for funding in order to continue vital work to contain Ebola and treat patients in the areas affected by the epidemic. This is the first time in its 50-year history it has taken such a step in response to a disease outbreak. To help, visit dec. org.uk.

Raising the bars Co-Op going for Dairy-Gold Co-Op Superstores will compete in three different categories against some of Ireland’s leading retail businesses in the Retail Excellence Ireland 2014 Awards. The three categories are Medium Sized Company of The Year and e-commerce Website of The Year for their new online store coopsuperstores.ie, while merchandiser Donnacha Murnane will compete for the Rising Star of The Year 2014 award. Head of Retail at Dairygold Co-Op Superstores John
O’Carroll said “The Retail Excellence Ireland Awards are the benchmark by which the best in Irish retail are judged and I am thrilled that we have been shortlisted for three of these prestigious awards. It is a fantastic reflection on our people and how hard they work to offer great quality value and service to our loyal customer base”. Category winners will be announced at the Retail Excellence Ireland Awards in November.
Two Cork venues have earned top accolades at the ninth annual Bar of the Year Awards. The Pepperstack Bistro at Rosies Bar in Midleton was presented with the Munster Bar of the Year Award, while Hotel Bar of the Year prize went to The New Yorker Bar at the Cork International Hotel. The awards, which celebrate excellence within the bar industry, were presented at a gala black tie event in Dublin hosted by Today FM broadcaster Anton Savage. Event director Tracey Carney said the awards are “dedicated to raising the profile of the licensed trade and reminding consumers of the excellent service and quality that exists today in venues across Ireland”. “Given that the licensed trade industry has been hit hard in the last number of years, it’s great to see that venues are committed to constantly improving their service and quality,” she said. Next year is expected to be the best year for Cork’s retail sector since the downturn, according to leading property specialists. As the site where the former Capitol Cinema building is brought to market with a guide price of €6m, Savills is reporting a steady improvement in retail trading conditions in Cork, with major brands such as SuperDry said to have agreed to lease space in the city. Sav-
ills added that vacancy rates on St Patrick’s Street have fallen. The city’s last retail development site of note, which contains a number of buildings including the listed Oyster Tavern, The Vineyard Bar, and the former Capitol Cineplex - “represents a unique opportunity for the purchaser to get a foothold in Cork’s resurgent retail market,” according to Savills.
“This is the last city centre retail development opportunity of note and we expect a very high level of interest from a variety of purchasers - from both at home and abroad” said the auctioneers. In a further vote of confidence in Cork, eight properties have sold for €2.4m at auction, with urban and city commercial and residential developments attracting significant interest.

An unforeseen consequence of the spate of building and renovation happening around Cork at the moment - the industry is pushing back almost towards pre-crisis levels of activity - is a spike in the numbers of rats and mice brazenly making their way into homes and businesses. The pests which infested derelict buildings or the sewers beneath them have been disturbed by the activities of builders and are deserting their territories in droves, so much so that exterminators like Rentokil have had their busiest rodent-related month in years this October. What’s more, an upcoming cold snap will provoke even more of the vermin to seek out shelter in
more welcoming accommodation. The signs, when they appear, are unmistakable: the scuttle of little feet behind skirting boards or under floorboards, gnaw-marks on everything from furniture to fittings to food packaging, that unmistakable, acrid ‘rodent’ smell and of course little packets of droppings here, there and everywhere. More than a nuisance, rats and mice can be dangerous in all sorts of ways. Their droppings and urine can carry disease and cause allergic reactions, they can be asthma triggers, their fur is often covered in unmentionable stuff from the sewers below and big rats can even be a fire hazard
as they chew through electrical cables. And of course, we haven’t yet forgiven them for The Black Death. If you’ve noticed the signs of a rodent invasion - or even if you haven’t - now is the time to make sure they can’t make it into your home. Getting a cat is an easy way to deter them, but if you don’t have the time, space or patience for a feline the you can help keep them out by sealing any holes - even tiny ones - near door and windowframes (with steel wool, otherwise they’ll just gnaw through), making sure you don’t leave food - even morsels - out at night, that your bins aren’t overflowing and that you keep clutter to a minimum; don’t give them anywhere to hide.

What happened Water water to ‘life is sacred’? everywhere Dear Sir, I appreciated George Hook’s honest article last week but was saddened by it. Sir, Protests will erupt around the country at the weekend because of the continued habit of the government, one they have inherited and are determined to carry on, of ignoring the will of the people. We the people have raised valid, reasonable objections about Irish Water (why do they need our PPS numbers? Why are they not fixing the leaking pipes before installing meters? Why are they entitled to demand our personal information?) and they, the government, have ignored and ignored and ignored us every step of the way.
This is a democracy, and Enda Kenny and his cronies must surely realise that we the people will make each and every one of them answer at the ballot box. I encourage each and every citizen of Cork to raise their voices and be heard this weekend, next weekened, and every day after that until we are finally listened to. We elected the government. We the people are in charge. We must never forget that the government cannot act without our consent. Is mise, le meas, Alan Kavanagh
Be mindful this Halloween Dear Editor, I’m writing to ask that people keep an eye on their vulnerable neighbours tonight. For many older people, Halloween can be a distressing time, with people calling to the door or setting
off bangers and fireworks. If you are out with children trick or treating, please keep an eye on your older neighbours to be sure they’re not being bothered. With thanks, Gerard Scully

Bandon girls go ‘kouture’ for launch The Bandon students who were finalists of a prestigious recycling fashion competition last year are encouraging other secondlevel pupils to get involved in the event. Barbara Mitrasova, Julia Sworzeniowska and Leona Sheehan of Colaiste Na Toirbhirte created the Papillion d’Or for last year’s Junk Kouture; a one-shouldered, layered dress with an extravagant train made from 453 milk cartons, plastic spoons, old fabrics and copper wire. This year’s competition is to feature a new judge - model and TV presenter Vogue Williams - and as with previous years will see four regional heats; The Helix, Dublin on Friday, March 6th 2015; Millennium Forum, Derry on Monday, March 9th; The Royal Theatre, Castlebar on Wednesday, March 11th; and University Concert Hall, Limerick on Friday, March 13th. The final, featuring the top 80 dresses, will take place in the 3 Arena on Friday, April 24th. Laura Murphy from Repak stated the programme
Fashionistas set for Style Awards Six hundred of Munster’s most stylish people are to attend the Tia Maria Hi Style Awards in Cork next week with 40 awards up for grabs on the night. Solicitor Gerald Kean, who is chairing the the panel of judges, says the event promises to be a fantastic night of style, music and awards: “The event last year was an outstanding success and there is such a choice of nominees for each of the awards that it is a daunting task to know who will win each award” he stated.

Do you want to be a Personal Trainer? Certificate in Personal Training with Fitness Instructing & Nutrition 6 Months Part-time Certificate
Next Course Starting 25th November Highly certified ITEC Qualification, Internationally recognised and REPS and NFQ Accredited
Spaces are limited so book your place today on 021 482 0649 or email info@newmindsacademy.com
When I qualified with my 3 certificates from New Minds Academy I got a permanent full time job immediately. The qualifications I gained gave me outstanding knowledge of the fitness industry. I found the tutors fantastic and were always on hand to help. I would highly recommend New Minds Academy to anybody thinking about getting into the fitness industry.
Studying at New minds fitness academy enabled me to pursue a career in the fitness industry. Through a combination of the facilities available and the guidance of the tutors I received a first class education in fitness. One of the main reasons I picked New Minds Fitness Academy was the world wide accreditation and also the fact that it is a Cork owned business.
’I really enjoyed my time in New Minds Academy, in Glanmire, Cork. It gave me qualifications which secured me a full time permanent job when I qualified. I would highly recommend this course. You will have 3 separate personal training, gym instruction and nutrition qualifications in 6 months.
I graduated last May 2014, I was in transition year at the time so by doing the course it kept me focused. I received 3 qualifications from the course and what I learnt on the course gave me exceptional knowledge of nutrition and how to train people correctly. Since completing the course I have been training myself. I am a keen golfer and from me being healthier and fitter I have reduced my handicap to 2.7 and my goal is to get down to scratch by the end of the year.
I completed my ITEC course in Personal Training, Fitness Instruction and Nutrition with New Minds Fitness Academy in 2013, I initially signed up for the course to gain knowledge for personal use, however I am now working in the fitness industry and love every minute. I would highly recommend this course, within 6 months it will give you the qualifications, knowledge, confidence and kick-start you will need in the fitness industry, thank you to all my tutors and to New Minds Fitness Academy

NEW MINDS FITNESS ACADEMY
I found the New Minds Fitness Academy Certificate in Personal training and Fitness Instruction fantastic. It has only taken 6 months and I have learned so much in such a short time frame. I am also in college by day studying coaching education and this course has really helped me. I would recommend this course if you have a passion for fitness and would love a career in the health and fitness Industry
I am a mother of 2 teenage sons. I had been interested in health and fitness for some time and I decided to do something for myself and sign up. I learned so much over the past months about postural alignment, screening, nutrition, fitness testing and much more. It has given me new motivation, purpose in life & confidence and the fellow students, trainers & tutors I met during the course were very encouraging and supportive. I am really looking forward to receiving my qualification and to start working in the fitness industry
Each student is valued as an individual and all (New Minds Academy) there efforts are focused on developing the talents and abilities of each person. Students are encouraged to develop their talents and are prepared and motivated for exams. Over this course I met some very special friends who will be my friends for life. Thank you New Minds Fitness Academy
I have not only learned more about making people healthier or making people stronger, I have also learnt more importantly about fixing people and problems they might have with their body. I can safely say I would be very confident going out into the fitness industry now. I have been thought by some great tutors who are very knowledgeable about the fitness industry and took great care in not only teaching us as a group, but making sure we all benefited one to one as well. It is a great course and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
In 2010 I was diagnosed with a debilitating illness and was presented with a stark choice, give in or fight. I decided to fight. I joined a gym and so began a long and arduous journey. Somewhere along that journey I developed an appreciation of, and respect for, what the gym could a achieve in terms of a person’s health and general well being. New Minds Fitness Academy has proven to be an inspired choice. It has provided first class instruction within a supportive environment in which all participants are encouraged to maximize their potential.

New film role for Murphy Of Mice and Men Douglas native Cillian Murphy has landed a role in a $10m action film. Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire will see the Cork star appear alongside Michael Smiley, Luke Evans, Armie Hammer and Olivia Wilde. The story is set in Boston in 1978, with Wilde playing Justine, a woman who has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Murphy and Smiley) and a gang of gunrunners led by arms dealers (Hammer and Evans) with whom they’ve brokered a deal for a consignment of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart stopping game of survival ensues. Wheatley, who has directed A Field in England and Kill List, is currently in post on High-Rise, an adaptation of JG Ballard’s novel which stars Avengers star Tom Hiddleston, west Cork resident Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans. He said the idea for Free Fire came from his “love of hard boiled crime movies”. “Free Fire will take you and stick you in the middle of the action. I want the film to have the stylish, no nonsense feel
Ballymaloe Grainstore is to host the only screening in Cork of the Broadway hit Of Mice and Men starring Tony Award-nominee Chris O’Dowd and Golden Globewinner and Academy Awardnominee James Franco. This landmark revival of Nobel Prize-winner John Steinbeck’s play is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship. It tells the story of George (Franco) and Lennie (O’Dowd), an unlikely pair of friends drifting from job to job across the farms and fields of California, holding fast to their dream of one day having an acre of land to call their own. The screening takes place on Thursday,
November 6th with tickets €10 from ballymaloegrainstore.com or by phone on 021 4651555.
The die is cast Cork actor Cillian Murphy that you get in Peckinpah’s The Getaway. It’s a modern ‘70s movie. Muscular, tough

A collection of model trucks from all over Ireland, UK and Europe and an obsolete collection of old Britians Toy Farm models in original boxed condition will feature in the Model Diecast, Diorama & Toy Show to be held at the Cork Airport International

alloween spending is set to soar to a record high of $7.4 billion in America this year; while the US leads the world in celebrating the spooky holiday in style, Halloween traditions in Ireland have moved far beyond humble bobbing for apples while wearing bin liner costumes complimented by masks hastily purchased from the newsagents. Thanks to the (dare we
mention it?) Celtic Tiger, our heads have been turned: every year we hear of new and exciting ways to entertain the kids that are all a far cry from dragging the younger siblings from door-to-door in the freezing cold with a plastic bag in hand (they were free back then, remember?). Then our war cry of “Anything for Halloween” was rewarded mainly with nuts and fruit, with chocolate being a rare but welcome sight. Mention this to a modern
Cork youngster and you’d be greeted with expressions of incredulity. With this in mind, The Cork News spoke to one of the more unique Halloween experiences the Rebel County has to offer this spooky season: The Toy Soldier Factory Visitor Centre. Located in the sleepy village of Killnamartrya on the N22, 35 minutes’ drive from either Cork or Killarney, the Visitor Centre is open almost all year round. This Hallow-

costumes. This unique attraction is not just opening its doors for Halloween, however; proudly claiming to be the only toy soldier factory in Europe – and one of the largest in the world – the centre welcomed 11,000 visitors this year alone. Quite a remarkable feat for a company which was founded in 1976 by a Swedish man, Lars Edman, and his new wife, recent arrivals to Irish shores with two mould-making machines in tow. With a visitor tally up about 50% on last year, Mary Moynihan, Sales and Marketing Manager for the Toy Soldier Factory, is dismissive of claims that this year’s increased numbers were due to the apparent end of the recession: “The recession actually suited us! 65% of our visitors are domestic whereas before it would have been mainly American tourists. Once the recession came Irish people weren’t having as many holidays abroad, instead they were having short breaks. They might go away two or three times a year and, as we’re ideally located between Cork and Killarney, we tend to get a lot of traffic.” Ms Moynihan also pointed out that, unlike almost any other growing business in the country, social media has not played a big role in their increased footfall. Despite having a Facebook profile and featuring on websites such as daysout.ie and familyfun.ie, and notwithstanding their ‘Ex-

cellent’ rating three years in-arow on Tripadvisor, the factory relies on a more straightforward advertising method: “80% of our visitors find us due to our road signage, and we have done extensive market research on this.” This is quite a surprise, considering that Fáilte Ireland
maintains that the internet, particularly social media, is crucial to tourists’ decision making when researching things to do in Ireland, with a survey published on their website claiming that over 40% of smartphone owners use their devices to get destination information. In fact, Fáilte Ireland has dedicated a whole section of its website to promoting businesses on social media, including tips on how to set up and maintain social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Interestingly, it also seems that word-of-mouth has garnered better results for the visitor centre than have their many television appearances. In fact Ms. Moynihan is adamant that word-of-mouth advertising is central to the des-

She gives as an example a family from Clare who visited during the summer and, when asked as to how they had heard of the visitor centre and its familyfriendly activities, replied that the father became aware of it while playing a football match, when one of his teammates suggested the visitor centre as an excellent family destination. Ms Moynihan’s faith in this type of promotion is supported by information gathered from a Neilson survey in 2013, which found that 84% of consumers trust word-of-mouth recommendations above all other forms of advertising. Businesses must diversify to survive, and because 80% of the factory’s output is niche and exported abroad through their online shops under the
alternative to the tech-heavy world to which today’s children are exposed. As each workshop lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, it’s an activity for the whole family to get involved with. Ms Moynihan stated that one of the most rewarding things to see is the reaction of the dads who visit, responding especially well to the activities on offer and allowing the little boys inside them the opportunity to relive activities they enjoyed in their childhood. These workshops can be run for birthday party activities, school tours and even as part of company team-building exercises. Rachid Zaouia’s Sticky Toffee Pudding with Muscovado Toffee Sauce
Wines of the week Wine buyer Gary O'Donovan on the week's best bottles
Prosecco, the sparkling white wine from north-eastern Italy, has enjoyed massive popularity since our Champagne tastes were curbed somewhat by the bust. Although it was once an over-sweet fizz that was even sold in cans, techniques have vastly improved so now Prosecco has finer, more persistent bubbles, more subtle flavours and aromas and far less sugar, as the tastes can stand up to scrutiny without being masked. The Prosecco DOC covers still Prosecco, lightly sparkling Prosecco Frizzante and foaming Prosecco Spumante. The distinction between the spumante and frizzante wines is a subtle one, involving the degree of pressure inside the bottle. 85% of the blend must be the Prosecco (Glera) grape, with local varieties like Verdiso or Bianchetta Trevigiana or stock repertoires of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Nero making up the balance. You can win yourself a bottle of Prosecco Frizzante by uploading your scariest Halloween selfies to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the #ODonovansSpookySelfie tag.
Executive Pastry Chef at the Fota Island Resort Rachid Zaouia gives us a peek inside his repertoire for this spectacular, indulgent dessert
Emotivo Prosecco Frizzante €9.99 (was €11.99) Typically less expensive than its sibling Spumante, the Frizzante has a lighter, less persistent mousse (the bubbles subside after pouring). It’s pale straw in colour with a nose of flowers, apples and pears. Your first sip reveals a lovely light, clean taste with soft mouthfeel dominated by apple and pear flavours. Chill well and serve as a welcome aperitif to combat dark rainy evenings. It pairs well with lighter fare.
Serves 12 Ingredients: • 500g dried dates • 500g caster sugar • 170ml water • 50g plain flour • Six eggs • 30g baking powder • 35g bicarbonate of soda • Ground nutmeg • Ground cinnamon • Ground ginger
Emotivo Prosecco Spumante €17.99 (was €19.99)
Toffee: • 250g muscovado sugar • 750ml pouring cream Method: 1. Place some of the dates in a saucepan with a little water and cook until rehydrated and the water is gone. 2. Combine the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and whisk until the butter has softened. 3. Add egg, flour and spices and mix again until a smooth paste is formed.
4. Add the baking powder and sodium bicarbonate to the date mix, then add to the egg and butter dough. 5. Pour the mixture into a mould and cook at 130 C
for one hour or until fully cooked.
cook until it reaches a nice caramel colour.
For the toffee sauce: 1. In a pan, add just enough water to cover the sugar and
2. Slowly add the cream, then pour over your pudding and enjoy!
More complex than the Frizzante, this Spumante has a delightful delicate aromatic bouquet and stronger bubbles that last longer. The frothy mousse is sure to please bubbly fans, a result of increased bottle pressure and secondary fermentation. Unlike Champagne, most Prosecco is made using the ‘charmat’ method and it doesn’t ferment in the bottle, which means it can grow stale over time and really should be enjoyed while it’s young. It’s great with anything from Asian food to dessert.

Halloween food? That’s just barmy! Halloween is a great many things to a great many people, marking the boundary between summer and winter for some and the boundary between the living and the dead for others. Samhain, its ancient Irish predecessor, was one of the Gaelic new year festivals, celebrating the ‘rebirth of the night’ and, in common with other cultures, seeing customary feasting accompanying no small amount of customary drinking. In much the same way as the preparation of pancakes for Shrove Tuesday was originally intended to use up rich foods like cream and eggs before the long Lenten fast, a lot of Halloween’s food traditions can be traced back to a connection with the rhythms of nature that have perhaps become a little lost in the face of our modern, 24/7 lifestyle. It also focuses on autumnal fare like fruits and nuts, apt for the time of the year: apples, of course, are a great example of an autumn fruit which we use extinsively, whether it’s bobbing for them or hanging them on string from doorposts and eating
them with our hands behind our backs. The archetypal traditional Irish halloween loaf is the barm brack, or báirín breac (breac means ‘speckled’), a rich, thick yeasty bread chock full of sultanas, raisins and whatever dried fruit you’re having yourself. It’s also made using that other great Irish staple, tea. Though the tradition is slowly dying out, barm bracks are still associated with having to be careful as you eat, lest you bite down on any one of a number of objects stirred into the mixture. Coins, rings, rags, hard little peas and even twigs were customarily added to the mix before baking, each symbolising either something for the year just gone or the year yet to come. These days, very few commercially-sold bracks have the added extras (which is probably for the best) but of course, if you bake your own you’re entitled to add pretty much whatever you like - just be sure you warn people before they
bite into it with gusto lest you have a lawsuit on your hands! Barm Brack may be the most recognisable Halloween speciality, but of course it’s not the only one. Colcannon and champ are heavy on the cab-
bage, soda bread is a staple all year ‘round, and boxty or potato cakes even have their own special halloween rhyme in Irish: Bacstaí bread a chuireas na cailleacha ag troid - boxty bread, which makes the hags fight!

Support for men with prostate cancer Psychological support for men with advanced prostate cancer and their families will be provided at a meeting in Cork. As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18th at 6.30pm in The Gresham Metropole Hotel, and is in response to research commissioned by Janssen that reveals nearly one third of men living with prostate cancer are not aware of the support resources available to them. Patricia Byrne, from the psychological medicine service at St James’s Hospital,
Dublin said: “Living with advanced prostate cancer is a significant source of stress for the men affected, and their families. Managing and living well despite such a diagnosis is a significant but not insurmountable challenge. Gaining information about available support services, and more importantly meeting others who are experiencing the same health challenge, is a vital part of managing the stress of living with this condition.” The meetings are free to attend however booking is essential at 01 6188460 or mantoman@fleishmaneurope.com.

How to eat for 1000 vital days As highlighted by celebrity chef Nevin Maguire in Cork this week, diet for the first 1000 days of a child’s life, from conception right through its formative years until they’re able to toddle around on their own getting into all sorts of trouble, is absolutly vital. Maguire was Leeside to support the First 100 Days movement, which aims to drive awareness of the importance of correct nutrition during the first 1000 days of life, from pregnancy to two years of age, and to offer accessible and, just as importantly, affordable solutions to achieve this. Good nutrition during this time offers parents a unique window of opportunity to secure the long term health and development of their baby. As ambassador for the
First 1000 Days movement, Neven gave a demonstraion on how to cook a diverse range of dishes appropriate to the four key stages which make up the first 1000 days, covering pregnancy, breastfeeding, weaning and those first unsteady steps as a toddler. Put the right foot forward Decent footwear is the key to comfort, but for older people it may also be the key to safety. Gait and balance problems are common in people of all ages, and a recent study found that the majority of elderly people who end up in A&E do so due to a trip or fall. Some of these incidents are down to footwear, because as people age they naturally grow a little less steady on their feet. “Our body weight must be balanced on the two load-bearing marvels that are our feet,” said Tony Linehan, owner of Foot Solutions on Grand Parade. “People as young as 50 experience problems with gait and balance, so no matter what your age or lifestyle, you need reliable footwear. We focus on the function of your shoes to help you achieve a neutral balance position.” Foot Solutions performs a comprehensive electronic foot and gait analysis for customers to determine whether they would benefit from arch supports. The information can be used to produce customised arch supports, compensating for gait problems and improving balance. Going Places ‘Tis the season 31 October 2014
Warm apple cider, sweet gingerbread, and spiced mulled wine all conjure up a magical Christmas. Now across Europe, these delights - along with other treasures - can be discovered at the Christmas markets which are getting ready to pitch up, offering music, food, drink and treasures for tourists. Strasbourg is home of the famed Christkindelsmärik since 1570, and those coming to the French city can stroll around from chalet to chalet, enjoying delights such as spice bread, confectionery, and mulled wine along with arts and crafts and typical Alsatian Christmas decorations. There are some 300 chalets spread over 11 sites in the city centre, which hosts one of the largest Christmas markets in Europe. It runs from Friday, November 28 to Wednesday, December 31st. For further information see noel.strasbourg.eu. The magic of Christmas is very much alive all across Poland, and the Wroclaw market is in the old town. According to the Lonely Planet, it’s a “more manageable version of Kraków”, with all
the cultural attributes and entertainment of that popular destination. Having absorbed Bohemian, Austrian and Prussian influences, the city has a unique architectural and cultural make-up, symbolised by its magnificent square, where the market is set up complete with traditional sweets, drinks, decorations and souvenirs. J Barter Travel Group has a Christmas Market package to the city, priced from €774pp for flights and a two night stay, with further information at travelnet.ie. The Austrian Christmas markets are among the best in Europe where you can soak up the festive atmosphere, browse the stalls and enjoy Christmas carols, warm food and hot wine. Shandon Travel has a three-night Vienna Christmas Market Tour, priced from €596pp, departing Thursday, December 4th (see travel247.ie). Also happening at the market, under the large Christmas tree on Vienna’s Rathausplatz, will be the opportunity to listen to Christmas stories read by celebrities, to be held in all weathers Mondays through
Thursdays at 6pm from Monday, November 17th to Tuesday, December 23rd. For those looking to get away over the Christmas break and completely immerse themselves in European festivities, there is an opportunity to enter a storybook world by sailing along Germany’s main river and exploring all the delights of the season on a Uniworld Christmas cruise. Nuremberg, Bamberg, Kitzingen, Rothenberg, Würzburg, Wertheim and Frankfurt will all be visited, with the trip perfect for those who want to experience the quintessential magic of the holidays while shopping for one-of-a-kind treasures and discovering the legends behind some of our most popular holiday traditions. The all-inclusive, ultra-luxury eight-day river cruise takes place over Christmas, departing on Sunday, December 21st, and those interested can save if they book and pay in full today, Friday October 31st, staying in a luxurious Category 2 riverview stateroom for €1,999pps. “The nearest I ever got to driving a racing car” says Seán Creedon of Seat’s new Leon Cupra
I
f you are a fan of the Golf GTI, then you should probably take a test drive in the Seat Leon Cupra. A selfconfessed Golf fanatic told me last week that the Cupra is probably better than its GTI cousin, and that’s some praise. The newest member of the Seat Leon family is a real head-turner. I first drove the Cupra in Barcelona back in
March from the Seat plant in Martorell to the harbour area of the city. The location was not as impressive last week, but I probably got a better feel for the car on Irish roads. The Leon Cupra test car came in Emoción Red, which looked bright and distinctive. Seat is part of the VW group and naturally the Cupra shares components with the Golf GTI. Now Seat has
a car that seriously rivals its legendary cousin. Externally it looks like a normal five-seater family car with a spacious boot and a spare wheel. And with 280 break horse power you can get from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, so you won’t be left behind in the race to take off at the traffic lights. The speedometer said I could get to 300 km/h, but I didn’t have time to go to
Mondello Park to check out a car the manufacturers say will grip the road like a racecar at a track, but if you select ‘Cupra’ drive mode in the dash you will still get a good driving experience; no doubt about it, this was the nearest I ever got to driving a racing car. The Leon Cupra could possibly cater for a few markets; naturally it will be attractive for the boy racer but with four doors it could also act as a family car for the parent who maybe hankers for his/her lost youth. If you are parking in a narrow street or a tight spot, it’s good to know that the side mirrors fold in automatically when the central locking is applied - that’s
great news in a city where some of our two-way streets are narrower than one-way streets in other towns; anyone who’s parked in Sunday’s Well or Wallace’s Avenue or anywhere around Shandon, for instance, can tell you that you’re taking your mirrors’ lives in your hands when you do. Externally the Cupra looks really cool, with attractive headlights. The interior in the test model was brightened by a full-length sun roof, which naturally will cost you extra. The interior decor is further enhanced by a cream trim on all the seats. The pedals are aluminium, which accentuates the sporty look.
I liked the controls on the dash for the radio and air conditioning, which are in a sensible, easy-to-use layout. Call me old fashioned, but I still like a radio where I have a button to scroll for the stations and I don’t have to make do, even temporarily, with the selections of the previous driver! Prices start at €35,410 for the 2.0-litre six-speed manual. Road tax is €390; that’s a bit high, due to high CO2 emissions. If you are young or young at heart then take a test drive; you won’t be disappointed. Seat dealers in the Cork area include: Cashman’s in Midleton, Finbarr Galvin, Bandon and Blackwater Motors in Fermoy.

The golden touch Drive The
used car review
Geraldine Fitzgerald sits back and relaxes in a nearly-new Toyota Auris from Lehane Motors
M
y mother was interested to see what I thought of this week’s test car, a nearlynew 2014 Toyota Auris Aura 1.6 from Lehane Motors, because she bought one a few months ago. We gave her unmerciful stick for giving up her sporty coupe for this eminently sensible family hatchback. She can’t ever find it because she’s too vain to put on her glasses before she gets in
and the Auris is so popular that there are loads of them in the car park, so she stuck pink flowers all down the side for easy identification. Unfettered micktaking ensued. My spotless red test car is thankfully devoid of kitsch décor, but as I putter around Douglas running errands with a sulky toddler in tow, I start to understand the appeal. It’s far more comfortable than the low-slung two-door she used to drive, where you had to bend yourself in half to get in
the back. This practical 5-door is infinitely easier to manoeuvre; with excellent safety features (even a driver’s knee airbag); Isofix child-seat points and an uncomplicated dash. I pop my iPod into the handy aux-in connection so my daughter can listen to ‘Fun with Phonics,’ get a jump start in school and get a job that doesn’t involve asking people if they want fries with that, and head upstream in rush-hour chaos. It’s been a while since I drove
a manual; this one shifts smoothly and, even in the stopstart traffic of the perennially bunged-up roads in Douglas village, I get a relaxing, dramafree drive. All the Auris models are cheap to run, and this 1.6 diesel has low road tax and high fuel economy, and rewards your savvy purchase with a whopping 72 miles to the gallon. Slightly stiff suspension makes the Auris fun around corners but you’ll want to slow down over speed ramps – no harm – and it’s not a car for
thrill seekers, although certainly a capable performer. It’s well-designed for ferrying children, with a number of cubbyholes to stick disgusting tissues in, and it also has a flat floor in the back instead of the usual raised transmission tunnel, so whoever sits in the middle has somewhere to put their feet. Overall, the Auris Aura doesn’t skimp on equipment; its styling might be a little unexciting but it’s easy to see why people love them. If it were a dog, it would be a Labrador –
faithful, stable temperament, reliable. This one is barely out of the traps with only 19,000 kilometres on the clock; at the start of the year it would have set you back €23,710 but as of today Lehane Motors are running a special offer on it of only €19,900; a great deal on a smart, solid motor. The mother is raging; she paid full price for hers. Should have gone to Lehane’s, Ma. Visit lehanemotors.ie or call (021) 4817700.

Demons do battle with Saints Three Cork sides will be playing in Premier League basketball action this weekend in Dublin, including C&S UCC Demons who’ll be looking to maintain their unbeaten streak. The Leesiders are set to play DCU Saints on Sunday, November 2nd at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin at 2pm as part of the Basketball Ireland Men’s Premier League. Last weekend, Demons came from behind to beat Travelodge Swords Thunder 9378 at the Mardyke, with Lehmon Colbert working the high post and player/coach Colin O’Reilly hitting a succession of three pointers. It was Demons’ second game in 24 hours as they also outmuscled defending champions Killester 76-63 on Saturday evening. The Demons chief stated that his side took on two undefeated teams and “made it out alive”: “Both teams are well drilled and physically it took its toll, but we held tough and finished strong on both occasions,” said O’Reilly. BFG Neptune will play UCD Marian tomorrow, Saturday at UCD Sports Centre, Dublin at 7pm and then will take on UL Eagles at Neptune Stadium on Sunday, November 2nd at 3.30pm. The Cork side also had a double header last weekend, securing a 9266 win over DCU Saints on Saturday before suffering a 113-104 loss to Templeogue on the Sunday . In the Women’s Premier League, Glanmire side Team Montenotte Hotel are also unbeaten and will play rivals Meteors, also unbeaten, in Coláiste Íosagáin in Dublin on Saturday 1st at
Kingston steps down Work commitments have ruled Cork Senior Hurling coach Kieran Kingston out of The Rebels’ back-room team. Kingston announced that he is not continuing his involvement with the team this year, stating it was with “deep regret” that he has had to take the decision. “I’ve had a fantastic three years and it has been an honour to work
with this team, and while I’m not going forward this year, I would hope to work with Cork teams again in the future should the opportunity arise,” he said. Manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy, who will confirm his full back-room team in due course, stated Kingston was “instrumental” in Cork’s Munster Final victory last year.
Weekend finals Nemo Rangers will take on Carbery Rangers in the Kelleher Shield final this weekend. The Division 1 Football League Final is at Páirc Ui Rinn tomor-
row, Saturday, followed by the RedFM Senior Hurling League Final with Erin’s Own and Ballymartle. The two sides will be vying to lift the cup at 8pm.
City play rescheduled game The rescheduled league game between Cork City Women’s FC and Castlebar Celtic will take place this weekend. The two sides play tomorrow, Saturday at Celtic Park, kick-
off at 5pm. The Continental Women’s National League game was due to take place Saturday, October 18th, however, was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

4pm. Coach Mark Scannell admitted that he thinks his team’s finishing “had been poor lately” but also defended his side’s overall ability: “once we start converting we’re a good team,” he said.
In the Men’s Division One the Blue Demons play JM&L Auctioneers Titans at Merlin Woods College Galway tomorrow, Saturday at 7pm while Fr Mathews take on SSE Renewables Moycullen in Coláiste
Chríost Rí at 7.15pm. The games will be streamed live on TG4.ie and feature in a half hour highlights programme to be broadcast on TG4 on Wednesday, November 9th at 9pm.
Cork GAA stars on Irish squad Cork’s Aidan Walsh will be vice-captain on the Irish International Rules team for the upcoming series test against Australia. The 24-year-old Kanturk GAA star, along with fellow Cork footballer Colm O’Neill (26), has been named on the 25-strong Irish panel, with the scheduled games seeing Ireland face Australia at Patersons Stadium in Perth
on Saturday, November 22nd. Their itinerary also includes a warm-up game in Melbourne against a VFL selection on Sunday, November 16th. Last year’s team captain Michael Murphy will once again lead the Irish challenge while Brisbane Lions’ Pearse Hanley, a former Gaelic footballer who played for Mayo, is the only AFL-based player included in the travelling panel.
Team manager Paul Earley said the players chosen have “worked hard in recent weeks and and have shown many of the attributes that we hope will allow us to build on some of the promising aspects of last year’s series performances”. “As a group we are looking forward to showcasing all that is good about Gaelic football while representing Ireland,” he said.

Long Walk Home for charity Walk from Cork to Carlow A Carrigaline teenager is to put her best foot forward for charity by walking 200 kilometres from Cork to Carlow. Nineteen-year-old Louise Davin, organiser of the Long Walk Home, and her friend Oisin Murphy will be completing the full trek in aid of Cork and South East Simon Communities, while a number of friends will also be joining them en route. The walk begins on Tuesday, November 4th. Louise explained that having recently ended up living in a tent in Germany with “no money, no language and nowhere to go” she decided that she wanted to help a charity that is tackling homelessness in Ireland. “I decided one day I wanted to walk from Cork to Carlow, talked to my dad about it, and he said I should do it for charity,” she said. “A lot of people find themselves in really difficult situations, and what we are trying to do is to recreate that. That’s why we are only
using what we have been given.” It’s estimated that the 124 miles/ 200 kilometre trek will take a week, to be completed without the use of GPS, with the participants staying in tents, bus shelters, or wherever else they find along the way. “We have been donated a road map and a compass so that’s what we will be relying on,” stated Louise. “In Germany I ended up walking 25 miles a day for quite a while before I managed to get back here, so my training is out of the way. My friends have also been walking circuits in town.” Cork people who want donate can do so directly to Cork Simon while those in Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Tipperary can make their donations to the South East Simon Community or at mycharity.ie/ event/long_road_home or 021 4321166. “That means that everyone is supporting their local charity,” said Louise.

‘I forget I’m in the show and start watching it’
Long associated with stand-up, PJ Gallagher is now taking a different direction in comedy, joining six others for a performance of Singlehood. Play’s Maria Tracey chats to the funny-man about braving new pastures, admitting singleton tragedies, and the perils of having to keep schtum on stage.
C
omedian PJ Gallagher admits that looking back on his single life he wasn’t fully ‘au fait’ with the rules. “I used to have whirlwind relationships and always thought they were the best thing in the world but I knew they were destined to fail,” he laughed. “Now of course, I’m married; it takes the pressure off. I can enjoy looking back on my single years, and have a much lighter take on them than when I was bottling through them.” His singleton observations form part of a new show for the Everyman Theatre, Singlehood, starring Gallagher along with fellow comedian Eric Lalor and five other actors, who all celebrate the art of being single. The hilarious and uplifting comedy brings real-life singleton stories to the stage to funny and devastating effect and is framed by a stomping singles soundtrack and original songs by Aidan Strangeman. “That’s the good thing about the show,” explains Gallagher. “There are people like me who
struggled being single because I just didn’t know the rules, and then there’s people like Joanne (McNally), who are great and like being a single person. We have gay and straight couples, married and single, it’s all different.” Taking to the stage in this performance is an entirely new direction for Gallagher, perhaps better known for his television show Naked Camera, whose various characters include chancer extraordinaire Jake Stevens and of course, “Dirty Auld One”, an old woman who makes sexual comments. And the move from stand-up to a more scripted performance has also surprised Gallagher. “It’s totally different, and my first time getting a professional job as an
actor…I suppose if you’d call it that,” he says. “I went to drama school with the whole idea of doing something like this but ended up doing stand-up, roped into it with Jason Byrne. I also didn’t want to go to auditions and all that craic. When this came along, I jumped at it. It was something I wanted to do for years and years, and to be honest, it’s the most I’ve enjoyed being on stage in my life. I’m just loving being part of it.” A cross between real-life and acting, sections of Singlehood are based on the performers’ own experiences. “When we are standing we’re other people and sitting down we are ourselves,” he says. “It’s ultimately a comedy show. For people like me, who can’t dance or sing at all, we
also have to bundle around and dance and sing. I apologise in advance and urge people not to look at me. Look at the others. I’ll be the one with my hands over my face and wriggling limbs that are out of control!” Coincidentally, while he stars in Singlehood in the Everyman from Thursday, November 20th to Saturday, November 22nd, PJ will return to Cork for another performance on Valentine’s Night next year. “I’ll go from being married, talking about being single on stage to being a married man being solo on stage next Valentines Day,” he smiles. He states that he “loves” performing to a Cork audience, with his last gig Leeside at Cork Opera House. “A woman came up to me beforehand and said ‘you’ll have a tough time down there’… and it was probably one of the best gigs I ever did. She came back over at the end, and said ‘I told you’,” he laughs. “Cork audiences are always very receptive and I’ve a bit of a hidden secret; I was born in Cork, even though I’m a Dublin bloke.”
“It feels completely unnatural for me to let six other people talk...I can’t butt in and make jokes.”
While Gallagher’s gift of the gab may have come from his Rebel roots, this doesn’t necessarily help on stage all the time. “Normally with stand-up I’m making sure there is no dead air and I have to keep talking,” he says, “so it feels completely unnatural for me to let six other people talk in Singlehood and I can’t butt in and make jokes. There is discipline to it, and I suppose that’s why I like it.” He laughs, and adds that itching to talk is not his only downfall: “A couple of times, I forget I’m in the show and start watching it,” chuckles Gallagher. “I then realise, ‘oh, I have to speak now’. I do get caught out from time to time on that.” Catch Gallagher, along with Eric Lalor, Joanne McNally, Rory Murphy, Dee Roycroft, Aidan Strangeman and Nyree Yergainharsian in Singlehood at The Everyman, Cork from Thursday, November 20th to Saturday, November 22nd. Doors are at 8pm and tickets are €25, (opening night €15) from everymancork.com.
