Sector analysis Opportunities in Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest island country in the world and the largest economy in South East Asia. The country has experienced a sustained period of economic growth, driven by its growing middle class and abundant natural resources – alongside China and India it is the only nation to continue to grow during the global financial crisis. This sustained development should see the country become the seventh largest economy in the world by 2030, up from sixteenth today. The oil and gas industry has been a significant asset to Indonesia since first oil was discovered back in 1885, and while revenues have been falling in recent years due to an increasing number of maturing fields and falling exports resulting from increased domestic demand, the sector still plays a significant role in the economy. The Indonesian government is pushing new offshore frontier fields for development in the east of the country and has introduced policies such as the ‘gross split’ scheme to encourage investment and exploration in new blocks. Key O&G activities: decommissioning and EOR There are new opportunities in the oil and gas industry such as decommissioning, stemming from fields reaching maturity and the ageing existing infrastructure where circa half the 500 offshore oil rigs in the country are due to be decommissioned. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) offers new scope to boost production with around 2.5bn barrels of oil reserves estimated to be recoverable through EOR activities by 2050. Furthermore, smallscale LNG is expected to experience significant growth due to the difficult geography and island make-up of the country, where larger scale developments are less economically feasible. Electricity demand The power sector is coming under increasing strain due to the growing population of around 263 million people, with electricity demand expected to triple between 2010 and 2030. Areas such as Java and Sumatra have experienced the largest growth in demand, not only placing pressure on generation, but also the transmission and distribution infrastructure which is in need of investment. The government has introduced new policies to increase generation such as the 35,000MW Programme which aims to add 35GW of power generation between 2015 and 2019, and has allocated more projects to independent power producers to stimulate private sector investment in the market.

s

Renewable targets The country has also set new targets to develop renewable energy in order to diversify its generation portfolio and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Renewable energy is advantageous to an island nation such as Indonesia due to the ability for generation to be deployed in a more decentralised manner, and its geography is such that it has significant potential to take advantage of tidal, solar, hydro and geothermal resources. With the second largest geothermal resources in the world and a wealth of narrow straits between islands suited for tidal deployment, the Indonesian government has set a target to increase the renewable share of primary energy demand from 3% in 2015 to 23% in 2025. Doing business in Indonesia While Indonesia has long been a difficult place to do business due to poor infrastructure, corruption and complex bureaucracy among other factors, it is opening up to foreign business and evidence of progress is clear in recent years with the country advancing 15 places in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business 2017 ranking to 91st out of 190 countries. The government is actively promoting foreign investment in Indonesia and strengthening the investment climate by improving the regulatory framework and business infrastructure. Indonesia has a substantial pipeline of projects across the energy industry, and with the government introducing policies to improve the investment climate for foreign businesses, the country offers growing export opportunities across the oil and gas, power and renewable sectors. Back in the UK, at the end of January we held a Westminster Round Table with newly appointed Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion, Baroness Rona Fairhead, the second round table event we’ve carried out in consecutive years. This exclusive EIC member event gave 13 of our companies – Alderley, Atkins, Booth Welsh, DNV GL, Elfab, Highview Power Storage, IMA – Process Vision, Mech-Tool Engineering, Schneider Electric, Severn Glocon – LB Bentley, Spencer Group, TP Group and YPS Valves – the chance to sit down with the minister and other DIT representatives to help set the energy agenda at governmental level and put forward the industry’s most pressing needs. The topics under discussion included Brexit, energy and trade policy, export growth, development of overseas partners, funding for skills and technology and the establishment of centres of excellence and supply hubs. While I can’t go into full detail here, we are currently preparing a briefing pack which will be shared with all our members once it’s been signed off by the DIT. This month’s sector analysis (opposite) provides a snap shot of the Indonesian energy industry. To learn more about this huge market and how your company can make the most of the developments taking place there, download the full EIC Country Report: Indonesia via www.the-eic.com/Publications/MarketIntelligenceReports.aspx The sector analysis and EIC Country Report were both produced by EIC Senior Energy Analyst Ollie Barnes. One-to-one with Jan Ward CEO, Corrotherm

Corrotherm International has been specialising in the supply of high grade metals for critical applications for over 23 years. With offices in eight countries and comprehensive stocks it is able to fulfil requirements for small quantities and bespoke items as well as large complex projects. The experience of its staff encompasses every field from the designers drawing board through the specification and manufacturing process to fabrication on the shop floor. This enables Corrotherm to produce practical solutions to real engineering and supply problems. The company is accredited to ISO 9001, OHAS 14001 and ISO 18000.

Q

Can you tell our readers a bit more about what Corrotherm does?

Q

What’s been the biggest highlight since you founded the company in 1992?

Our extensive scope of material supply covers the full spectrum of high nickel alloys. These materials operate in the most aggressive and high risk areas of industrial processing. The most recent addition to our range is ultra thin nickel foil using the electro-deposition process, which is key to producing a material that is incredibly thin but also wider than is possible to achieve using conventional rolling methods. This produces a product that is vastly versatile and can be applied to many different projects and components.

For us the biggest step forward was the installation of an end to end enterprise resource planning (ERP) system 18 years ago that enabled us to process very large multi item projects without any significant increase in staffing. We were able to double productivity while maintaining margins and significantly improve the quality of our processes. The system also provides excellent management information and remains the bedrock of our continuing success.

A

Q

What do the next 12-18 months hold for the company?

We will be expanding the depth and breadth of our stock range in Alloy 625 seamless pipe this year in addition to adding to our service offering to fabricators. We will be investigating new markets with new specialist expertise. We are not expecting to see any significant change in the market conditions but remain positive about the prospects for Corrotherm based on the drive for improved asset life and cost reduction.

A

A

Q

What advice would you give to supply chain companies just starting out?

When starting out the emphasis must be on quality and establishing the company’s brand in the market. This means recruiting the best people and ensuring that excellence is the norm. A new entrant must have something new to offer and be able to differentiate themselves from the competition. High standards need to be embedded in the culture of the business from the start. A company’s brand is not just the way it presents itself visually but also how it conducts business with its customers and suppliers and the way it treats its staff.

Q

Corrotherm has expanded into lots of overseas markets – what’s the key to winning new business abroad?

A

We have established a number of remote offices in target markets. Our strategy has been to invest in thoroughly understanding the market and the business culture, and ensure that we have the flexibility to deal with the variety of customer needs.

All offices are remotely connected to the head office and all the remote offices have access to the ERP system, which is custom designed to deal with the specific requirements of each market, while maintaining the Corrotherm brand and identity.

Thorough market research in advance of market entry is essential in order to make a risk based judgement on whether or not to enter the market.

KBR awarded Concept and FEED contract for Statoil’s Northern Lights project

Engineering, procurement and construction company KBR has been awarded the concept and FEED contract by Statoil for its Northern Lights project to develop an onshore carbon dioxide (CO2) storage terminal in Norway. The terminal is a key component of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration project being undertaken by Gassnova (the Norwegian governmental body for CCS), for which Statoil, with Shell and Total, are responsible for transport and storage. In addition to the CO2 storage terminal, the engineering scope will address the import jetty topsides, the CO2 re-injection lines and associated utilities. The first phase of the project will provide storage for up to 1.5m tonnes of CO2 per year. CO2 captured from onshore industrial plants in eastern Norway will be transported by ship to the onshore terminal. The project will allow for further expansion to receive additional CO2 volumes, with the aim of stimulating new commercial carbon capture projects in Norway, Europe and other countries around the world. Construction of the full-scale project including the onshore terminal is subject to the Norwegian parliament making a positive investment decision, scheduled for 2019.

Spotlight on technology Proserv

www.proserv.com

THE PROSERV SMART BOX Proserv is a global leader and a fresh alternative in the delivery of engineering and technical services to the energy, process and utility markets. Supporting clients for the lifecycle of their assets, we operate in 12 countries throughout 22 facilities, offering 24/7 local support services.

Well management solution

The economic impact from unplanned shutdowns can be significant for oil and gas companies leading to a loss of production and revenue. This problem is acute at geographically remote sites that have no remote monitoring. When a remote well shuts down there is no knowledge of such an event until the next inspection, which may be weeks or even months later.

Well status in real-time

The Proserv Smart Box solution lets operators monitor the status of wells in real-time, allowing them to take immediate action resulting in a reduction in lost production. Additionally, it can have the added feature of gas detection from an HSE perspective. Get in touch Share your news and views...

What’s in the Smart Box?

The Smart Box is an intelligent device with an in-built modem that collects information from production equipment at the well site and then transmits tailored alerts to multiple staff. The Smart Box allows: • Real-time monitoring of onshore/offshore unmanned wells, enabling a timely response and rectification • Reduces the need for visits and inspections at remote sites

• Notifications of the well status to be sent to multiple people at the same time • Prioritising of maintenance inspections • Allows special attention by exception resulting in maintenance optimisation and lower maintenance cost of problematic wells Any EIC members who wish to be profiled in this section please contact Edward White, EIC Editor and Communications Manager edward.white@the-eic.com

Middle East news Regional update

It has now been a full month since the UAE and Saudi governments introduced a VAT rate of 5% and just like every new initiative that affects all businesses, there have Terry W illis been a number of teething troubles. We are sure that everything will eventually sort itself out as the year progresses. If any member company is facing issues with this process then please do not hesitate to request assistance. February will see our postponed lunch with Wood, that was originally scheduled for last month, finally going ahead. This event had to be deferred due to logistical issues with the speaker but the take up has nonetheless remained positive. This month will also see us returning to Egypt to manage another UK pavilion at the Egypt Petroleum Show in Cairo. The first of next month sees our very popular golf tournament taking place and we are delighted to have the support of Triplefast as our prime sponsor. There are other sponsorship opportunities available, please contact the Dubai office. Preparations for our EIC Connect event on 17 April are progressing well following a meeting of the Advisory Group last month. An official invitation has been sent to the Minister of Energy’s office who we hope will again support the event. ADNOC is also keen to use the event as a platform to promote its new registration procedures. Talking of ADNOC, and just in case anybody was not aware, it has completely rebranded its business with single entities replacing all of the well-known operating companies. The major ones being ADCO rebranded as ADNOC Onshore, the merged ADMA-OPCO and ZADCO is now officially ADNOC Offshore. GASCO has become ADNOC Gas Processing while the refinery company Takreer is now ADNOC Refining. Other new divisions include ADNOC Fertilizers, ADNOC LNG and ADNOC Industrial Gases. With this consolidation, the aim is to have one streamlined and central procurement process working out of its brand-new HQ building. On the geo-political side, there is still no end in sight to the dispute between Qatar and its GCC neighbours, while in Iran we have seen a degree of social unrest. However, the US government’s decision with regard to its policy on Iran was expected on 22 January with the other JCPOA stakeholders expected to advise business as usual. Iran to upgrade 1GW plant

Iran is set to upgrade the 1GW gas-fired power plant that supplies power to the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf. The plant features six 157MW generation units, a gas pressure reducing station, compressor station, fire station, two 132kV substations and a 400kV substation. It currently provides power to the South Pars field, the world’s largest gas field shared by Iran and Qatar, as well as eight refineries and other processing facilities. The upgrade is expected to boost the plant’s efficiency from its current level of between 25-40% to 60%. Iran’s energy minister announced recently that all new power plants or units must be at least 58% efficient.

We organised this in partnership with the British Malaysia Chambers of Commerce and the Malaysian Society of Oil & Gas Council. Keynote speeches were given by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Vicki Threadle and the Vice President of PETRONAS, Mr Zamri Jusoh, who detailed PETRONAS’ plans for the next five years to decommission their aging assets. Other speakers at the event were Boskalis, Chevron Thailand, Lloyd’s Register, the Malaysia-Thai Joint Authority and Wood Mackenzie. On 17 January, we organised a New Year breakfast with members at our offices. About 30 member companies attended the event which featured two specially invited speakers: Rajiv Biswas, Senior Economist from IHS Markit and Hernando Caceres, Managing Director of DNV GL. Both gave very interesting insights into the outlook of the markets for the Asia Pacific region. Throughout January, I met with the key players in the Vietnam energy industries, including the CEO of PetroVietnam (PVN), the CEO of Electricity Vietnam (EVN), the CEO of PV Gas and the Country Managers of Premier Oil and Wood.

Both PVN and EVN have agreed to be co-organisers for the planned EIC Connect Vietnam, scheduled for 23 May, while PV Gas, Premier Oil and Wood will form part of the event’s advisory board. Looking ahead, on 7-8 March, we will hold the Fundamentals of FPSOs and Subsea courses, respectively. We are also making plans to host a business presentation by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) national utility company of Malaysia, in the same month. The EIC is proud to be organising and managing the UK pavilion at Rio Oil & Gas 2018 in September. Rio Oil & Gas is the leading industry event in Latin America, attracting senior procurement executives, project managers and engineers, all of whom will be visiting our pavilion to identify UK capabilities for offshore oil and gas projects in South America.

If you’re planning a visit to South America this year, there are several opportunities to make the most of your visit: our trade mission to Brazil is confirmed next month. In partnership with DIT, the EIC is leading the delegation focusing on offshore construction and maintenance. The delegation will coincide with the 6th edition of the UKBrazil Energy Showcase to be held in Rio on 20 March. The trade mission will be of benefit to British companies as they will have the opportunity to participate in pre-arranged meetings with the major contractors in the country, present their products/services/ new technologies and understand Brazil’s business environment. For more information, please visit our website or contact the Rio team. We are pleased to receive EIC members using our hotdesks to work in downtown Rio in between meetings. EIC Petrobras registration

Petrobras is one of the world’s biggest oil and gas operators, with more than US$74bn set aside for 2017-21 and over 120 platforms in place. How can suppliers access the vast and lucrative opportunities on offer with Petrobras?

Registering with Petrobras

The first step is to register with the company and be awarded a Petrobras certificate of registration (CRCC), which, unfortunately, is not as easy as it sounds. Some suppliers have spent over a year on the process as they have struggled with the bureaucracy involved.

The EIC Petrobras registration service: get it right first time

When it comes to registering quickly and successfully with Petrobras, the EIC knows how to support your company: • 15 years of experience – our Rio team has been working on Petrobras registrations for a long time – in fact, we have a dedicated Petrobras registration team. We know how the forms have to be filled in and will review them diligently to avoid common mistakes. • 100+ successful registrations – we’ve supported companies of all sizes from around the world to get registered. Many of which have won work with Petrobras.

We save you time

Petrobras forms aren’t easy to fill in, especially for companies with little or no experience in Brazil. Get one part of one form wrong and you may have to start all over again.

Legal support – we de-risk the process

You can’t register with Petrobras without having a Brazilian legal representative. Finding a Brazilian representative is not only time consuming, it’s also very risky to give an agent you don’t know the power to represent your whole business. You can avoid this worrying situation by using the EIC. With a registered office in Brazil we can legally represent you for the purpose of Petrobras registration only and we have a special Petrobras representative contract in place.

Low-cost flat fee

Other service providers charge a lot for Petrobras registration – holding proven reserves of 13bn barrels of oil, they know the company is a highly-valued prize. As a not-for-profit trade association, the EIC offers one of the most competitive rates on the market. What’s more – it’s a flat fee. Most registration service suppliers charge per service/product category, not us. One flat fee gets you full support for a whole year. To start the registration process, contact Luanna Souza in our Rio office on +55 21 3265 7402 or by email luanna.souza@the-eic.com

We work with you, taking on complete project management of the process if you allow us too. We’ll even liaise with the different departments of your company to get the information needed and mediate with Petrobras to answer any questions they have. Use the EIC and not only will your team be free to do their day job, they’ll soon be ready to start working with Petrobras. Sign Get inup touch for the EICOnline newsletter
