Sector analysis Small

modular reactors The UK’s confidence in nuclear power is making a comeback, with plans to ‘revive the UK’s nuclear expertise’, starting with the development of small modular reactors (SMRs). Nuclear energy currently generates around one fifth of the country’s electricity, a tried and tested source, and being a low carbon energy choice, nuclear power plants will play an important part in the UK’s climate goals. There has been a global interest in SMRs due to their ability to meet flexible power generation demands. They are defined by their capacity to produce up to 300MW of electric power. There has been a move to develop smaller units, as they can be manufactured offsite and delivered to location for final assembly. This results in less onsite construction, heightened nuclear security and increased containment efficiency, allowing for shortened construction time and more affordable production costs. It is particularly useful for introducing nuclear power generation in remote regions with less developed infrastructure. Remote locations often have variable power generation needs. Compared to large conventional reactors, SMRs have greater control, generating lower amounts of electricity when demand is reduced. SMRs display an enhanced safety performance through inherent and passive safety features, offering a renewed interest in this sector. There are about 50 SMR designs and concepts globally. Most of them are in various developmental stages and some are claimed as being near-term deployable.

The UK government first expressed interest in SMRs in the 2013 Nuclear Industrial Strategy. Since then, support of earlystage SMR research and several assessments have been produced. Key milestones are a study in 2014, identifying the opportunity to introduce SMRs in the UK, the publication of the Nuclear Sector Deal in 2018 ensuring the UK’s nuclear sector remains cost competitive with other forms of low-carbon technologies and the proposal of the Low-Cost Nuclear Challenge by a Rolls-Royce led consortium in 2019. The Low-Cost Nuclear Challenge aims to develop a SMR designed and manufactured in the UK, installed in former nuclear sites in Cumbria or in Wales. An initial £36 million joint public and private investment will allow the design to be developed further, with an aim to build 10-15 stations in the UK. The developed design is based on optimised and enhanced use of proven technologies that presents a class leading safety outlook and attractive market offering with minimum regulatory risk. The SMR would be a three loop, close-couple, pressurised water reactor, providing a power output at around 400-450MW, primarily intended for electricity production, but can also support heat requiring or cogeneration applications. Rolls-Royce have said: “The certainty behind our UK SMR technology is the foundation of a sound business case for owners, operators, utilities and governments. Knowing build costs and the price of the electricity generated makes nuclear energy an option for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.” Big things lie ahead for the UK nuclear sector.

Although there is pushback with the implementation of SMRs, with talk of financing challenges and licensing issues; companies and scientists backing the development of SMRs say that the technology offers a new way forward for nuclear power, one that overcomes many of the drawbacks of traditional, larger reactors. It is strongly believed, by industry professionals, that small modular reactors will play a fundamental role in the energy transition to a low carbon future and has the potential to transform the nuclear energy industry.

Demand sees Flowline Specialists launch new service Scottish energy equipment manufacturer and service provider Flowline Specialists has expanded its service offering as a result of client demand.

Member news

The Aberdeenshire-based company, which designs, engineers and manufactures a range of cable and pipe handling and deployment equipment for use in the energy sector, has launched a new service and maintenance division. It will operate from the firm’s existing workshop facility at its Oldmeldrum headquarters and utilise existing personnel. Established in 2001, Flowline Specialists supplies equipment such as under rollers, spoolers, turntables and tensioners to clients in the oil and gas, subsea, decommissioning and marine renewables sectors. The firm will use its expertise in manufacturing, operating and maintaining this type of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical equipment to service and refurbish similar cable spooling and deployment products that are owned by other companies working in these sectors. Alongside the repair, refurbishment and overhaul work, Flowline Specialists will offer an equipment rental service for customers whose equipment is being serviced. Flowline Specialists, which employs around 50 staff, has been working on developing the new division for about a year, investing around £50,000 to set it up. In recent months, Flowline Specialists has refurbished equipment owned by subsea engineering companies and serviced under rollers for a client operating in the renewable energy sector. Creating the new division is the latest step in the firm’s strategy to diversify its business. Initially focused on the oil and gas and subsea sectors, Flowline Specialists entered the offshore renewable energy market nearly a decade ago and has become a trusted provider of cable handling and deployment equipment to multiple projects. The firm has also significantly expanded its overseas operations during this time, including establishing a Dubai subsidiary, Flowline Specialists DMCC.

MSA Safety launches V-Series™ harness line MSA Safety, industry-leading designer, manufacturer, and distributor of safety products has launched its all-new V-Series™ harness line, representing the next generation of fall protection.

Jon Rowan, MSA’s Product Manager for Fall Protection introduced the new harness line: “The V-FORM™ and V-FIT™ harnesses have been held up as a benchmark of quality ever since their introduction three years ago. While this original crop of V-FORM and V-FIT harnesses is now being phased out, their iconic names will remain; they’re just being replaced with next generation products offering superior comfort, mobility and flexibility. We are also extending the V-Series harness line with the V-FORM+™, and V-FLEX™ (the premium product of the range), enabling MSA to offer best-inclass comfort at all price points.” Each harness in the new V-Series line includes an exclusive quick-connect racing-style buckle for a closer, more comfortable-fitting harness eliminating the need for bulky chest straps or cumbersome buckles. “This new line of racing style harnesses lets workers focus on their work instead of worrying about their harnesses, because the safest fall protection harness is the one you’ll actually want to wear,” said Jon.

Pull-down adjustments on each harness allow workers to quickly and easily get the right fit that lasts throughout the workday. “Sizing is significant when it comes to wearing fall protection harnesses,” continued Jon. “Yet unfortunately workers can be sized incorrectly and/ or wear harnesses that don’t provide adjustability. This not only makes for a more uncomfortable harness – potentially increasing the likelihood the worker won’t wear it at all – but it can also have an adverse effect on the user in the event of a fall.” The V-FLEX™ boasts a patented leg strap design to keep leg straps in place as webbing lays horizontally across the thighs, creating a more natural fit, as well as a patentpending hip connection which ‘flexes’ with the worker, reducing fatigue throughout the day. The V-FIT, V-FLEX and V-FORM+ also have a dedicated attachment point for personal fall limiters, allowing for quick and easy attachment, and keeps workers’ back D-ring free for other use. “Small details add up to big impressions and impressive results and that’s what you can see in this all-new V-Series harness line,” concluded Jon.

Roxtec UK secures cyber security accreditation Cable and pipe seal manufacturer Roxtec has been awarded Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation after demonstrating its commitment to maintaining robust cyber security measures. The business, whose UK branch is in Greater Manchester, specialises in innovative sealing solutions for companies in the energy sector designed to protect people and assets from multiple hazards including fire, flooding, the risk of explosion and electromagnetic disturbances. Roxtec chose to seek accreditation through the government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme to confirm that its own IT infrastructure and data handling processes are capable of withstanding online attacks, and to demonstrate its commitment to cyber security to current and potential customers. In order to be awarded the scheme’s highest level of certification, Cyber Essentials Plus, Roxtec was required to have an audit of its IT systems and processes carried out by an independent certification body. The assessment covered five technical control themes – firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection and patch management. As well as providing reassurance for customers, this level of accreditation is also now a prerequisite for companies wanting to bid on central government contracts, including major marine defence programmes and transport infrastructure projects. In 2017, Roxtec cable transits were approved for use by Transport for London and are being used to upgrade the London Underground system, providing cable seals for trackside modernisation.

UK and Europe news Regional update

Following everyone adapting to a new way of operating, the EIC team has been working hard to provide members with the highest level of service; ensuring that we Jo Cam pbell are keeping everyone up to date on the latest energy sector news, connecting companies by e-networking and providing a platform of EIC LIVE e-vents. May was an extremely busy time for the UK events team, with hosting between one and two LIVE e-vents weekly. We launched our very popular series of open forums, offering companies an exclusive opportunity to access leading market information from industry specialists from the comfort of their own home. Our first open forum focused on operations & maintenance, giving attendees the opportunity to find out more about the EIC and how we can help find new O&M opportunities through the use of EICAssetMap and EICSupplyMap. We also worked with the sales team to host an open forum on 15 May, focusing on how to build business development strategies through the use of EIC platforms. If you would like further information on these e-vents or EIC platforms, please contact jo.campbell@the-eic.com We were delighted to have over 200 attendees register for our opportunities in the nuclear industry on 5 May. This e-vent heard from Sellafield Ltd, Rolls-Royce, Doosan Babcock, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Nuclear AMRC – discussing how companies could support the overall international nuclear new build and decommissioning plans. EIC do not only host our own webinars, but we also work in partnership with our member companies. On 20 May KBR and EIC ran an extremely successful e-vent that focused on energy transition, and how the industry is driving towards a sustainable energy mix. Lloyd’s Register and EIC held a panel session with an expert line up of speakers, providing insights and best practices on managing and optimising ageing assets. Following the launch of our Decommissioning Insight Report, written by Senior Upstream Analyst Diveena Danabalan, we held a focussing on decommissioning interactive webinar addressing the importance of supply chain expansion out of the North Sea. We are here to help so do let us know if there are any topics you would like to be updated on. Stay home, stay safe, stay positive. Regional news

Impact of COVID-19 on Europe’s onshore wind sector Since COVID-19 drastically hit Europe and showed its cataclysmic aftermath, the ensuing impact on some onshore wind companies’ operations in the region has been unavoidable. In April, Vestas and Siemens Gamesa suspended their 2020 guidance, citing uncertainty on future implications from the outbreak. Manufacturers were seeing difficulties in production facilities for mechanical and larger components, due to temporary freezes and protocol changes to assembly processes. However, a number of announcements were made that show the sector still standing strong, providing hope for little impact in the long term. In Q1 2020 Nordex secured 1.6GW of new orders, with 1.3GW from Europe alone, and Vattenfall also announced healthy Q1 profits. Spain in particular has shown progress despite being one of the more critically impacted countries from the virus. Following a short-lived halt, a number of Spanish factories restarted production including Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, Nordex and LM Wind Power, as well as the construction pause on all onshore wind projects lifting in Spain.

While we remain in the COVID-19/low oil price I am pleased to see the resilience shown by our member companies as they look to remain productive Ryan M cPhers on during this period. Make no mistake this remains an extremely turbulent time with continued volatility expected in the coming weeks as we seek to balance out the supply, demand and storage conundrum which witnessed WTI falling into negative territory for the first time as the markets remained unprepared for a supply glut with storage options close to saturation. During this time like my colleagues elsewhere we have embarked on a weekly series of webinars to give a transparent overview of what is happening across the region and illustrate the number of partner agencies who are here to assist you during a time of need. This has included country briefings for Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman where we are averaging over 100 attendees for each webinar, the majority of whom are regular attendees which is great to see. We will continue to provide this service in the coming months and embark on a range of additional topics. As part of our webinars we have introduced an e-networking service to our webinars allowing delegates to be introduced facilitated by EIC staff. This is a great opportunity to broaden your network while working from home. All webinars have been recorded so please contact me or any of the team if you wish to get a copy including the accompanying presentations. Our recently launched Africa membership has welcomed our first member under this category in ABSA Bank who we are delighted to welcome into the EIC family and hope to see more companies join them in the coming months. Our African market webinar illustrated the opportunities in this region where it was tremendous to see many UK and African companies alike on the call. More information can be found at www.the-eic.com/Membership/Africa We also welcomed Inmarsat as our latest GCC member and look forward to working alongside them in the months ahead. On a positive note (accepting that predictions are severely time bound at present) it was interesting to see UBS forecasting Brent oil prices could rise to US$43bbl by the end of 2020 and Saxo Bank predicting that Brent could recover to US$50-70 levels by the first half of 2021 – hopefully we see more of this sentiment reflected in the physical market. On a final note from all of us here at EIC we hope that you and your respective families continue to stay safe during this period. Please continue to take advantage of the network, talk and help each other out where possible. We appreciate that this is a challenging time for UK businesses the world over and we want to remind you of the strong network at your disposal and that we are here to help in any way we can. ADNOC terminates Dalma contracts with Petrofac

ADNOC has cancelled the award of two packages of work to Petrofac on the Dalma development. Petrofac has said that it will continue to work closely with ADNOC over the coming weeks to explore alternative options to deliver this project in a way that supports their strategic objectives within the current environment. The cancellation of the contract award has led to speculation from several sources that ADNOC could delay many of its tenders and projects this year.

Spotlight on technology Rotork

www.rotork.com

THE NEW ENHANCED YT-3700 AND YT-3750 DIGITAL SMART POSITIONERS Suitable for all markets, the new digital smart positioner is appropriate for both control and on/off valve applications where enhanced diagnostics are required. It is ideal for highly critical applications in chemical/petrochemical processes. The YT-3700 and YT-3750 pneumatic smart positioners employ continuous monitoring and graphic display of valve position, set point target over time and internal circuit board temperature over time. They provide reliable control of pneumatic valve systems for linear and rotary applications.

Additionally, valve signature, advanced step tests and Partial Stroke Testing (PST) can be operated from local or remote positions. Auto-tuning functionality and noncontact sensor are included for high frequency operating valves and an enhanced lifetime.

Valve diagnostic information to NE107 standard is provided, with Hart® 7 communication protocol included as standard and a display for all settings and local device interaction. Commissioning can be handled locally without the need of an additional device, all indications are clear and simple to follow thanks to the clear visual identification on the local display and the four push buttons.

The steady state deviation analysis that they provide can detect friction in the valve or actuator, leakage in pneumatics and instances where there is insufficient supply pressure. A deviation time out alarm occurs when the difference between the target position and the actual position exceeds the pre-set deviation alarm point (for more than the pre-set deviation time).

The enhanced diagnostic package offers position over time continuous monitoring, and graphical visualisation trough Device Description (DD) and Device Type Manager (DTM) files.

To match Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems for on-off applications, the YT-3700 range offers a full package of offline diagnostic tests which include both valve signature and partial stroke test. All information can be stored on the device or downloaded for customer records.

Brazilian power segment impacted by COVID-19

Brazil’s power generation, transmission and distribution segments are experiencing major challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country’s National Electric Power Agency (ANEEL), the sector’s national regulator, has suspended six power generation and transmission auctions originally scheduled for 2020. This includes the A-4 and A-6 auctions for new power projects as well as an annual auction for new transmission line projects. Power distribution companies, meanwhile, are bearing the brunt of lower demand in the commercial and industrial sectors. On the other hand, active projects in the conventional power and renewables segments are not expected to be cancelled or put on hold, as they are supported by long-term power purchase agreements with distributors and/or large industrial consumers.

Ecopetrol cuts 2020 CAPEX by US$1.2bn

The Colombian national oil company has announced that it will cut its capital expenditure by US$1.2bn and operational expenses by US$500m this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the downturn in oil prices. Following this reduction, Ecopetrol’s new CAPEX target is now US$3.3-4.3bn. The company’s oil production target for 2020 remains the same at 745,000-760,000 barrels per day. Ecopetrol’s breakeven oil price is estimated at US$30-35 per barrel, which poses serious challenges for the company amid the current downturn.

RIO DE JANEIRO

YEARS

EIC celebrates 20 years in Brazil This month the Energy Industries Council is proud to celebrate 20 years in Brazil since it first opened its doors in Rio de Janeiro.

The original office was inaugurated in Avenida Nilo Peçanha, on 22 May 2000. In 2009, EIC Rio moved into its current office in Avenida Rio Branco, 89, on the 26th floor. Since 2009 the office began promoting events and strengthening ties with major players in the industry as well as prominent government figures, thanks to the initiative of its current Head of Americas, Clarisse Rocha. From 2009 to the present day, EIC Rio has hosted 159 events, training and now webinars, with 5,321 attendees from 1,258 companies. Much has changed in the Brazilian energy sector since 2000. Already a key oil and gas player back then, Brazil more than doubled its oil production over the next 20 years. Massive pre-salt discoveries heralded the beginning of a new era for the country’s oil and gas sector, bringing new technologies, investment and business opportunities for EIC members around the world. Vijay Rangarajan, British Ambassador to Brazil, commented: “Congratulations to the EIC. Over the last 20 years, EIC has been an important partner for HMG in Brazil and to the energy sector, delivering high-value content and comprehensive support to its members in a fast-changing world. The importance of energy and the energy transition has never been higher for the world, Brazil and the UK. Long may our collaboration continue.”

EIC CEO Mike Major, Head of Americas Clarisse Rocha and Rio Consul General Tim Flear open the new EIC Rio de Janeiro office in 2009

For more information please visit

EIC works closely with suppliers interested in doing business with Petrobras, the national oil company, who have consolidated its position as the world’s largest FPSO operator with multi-billion dollar projects in its portfolio. Over 100 companies received EIC support to get registered with the oil major. Meanwhile, an array of oil companies and independent players entered the market and are developing their own ambitious E&P projects. EIC has nearly 700 members worldwide, and around 200 active in South America. The Rio de Janeiro office has played a great role throughout the years in aiding its members and colleagues to achieve their goals. Through the years the office has supported several companies to start operations in Brazil such as Aggreko and London Offshore Consultants. Services from this region also include bringing the best of the UK supply chain to key countries in South America across almost 30 trade delegations. For the next 20 years to come, EIC Rio remains focused on providing services with excellence, helping the supply chain to win business across the globe. Former president of the Rio office, Ian Wilkinson commented: “This a significant milestone for EIC. Since 2000 the Rio office has evolved into a much slicker operation providing programmes which are helping companies who have lack of market knowledge and exporting opportunities/entry into Brazil.”

Example of EIC Inform service delivery ABC Valves is a manufacturer and supply company to major projects and applications in the UK oil and gas industry. Its products meet complex specifications for end users such as BP, Shell, Equinor and ExxonMobil, among others. The company has been active in the UK and Middle East region for over 50 years with much success. However, its attempts to infiltrate the US market have proved difficult. The company undertook several, expensive, market visits to find they were not meeting with the right contacts, never would receive a response from follow-up emails or calls; or could not get an appointment at all. The MD took forward 40 hours of EIC Inform which provided the following: • A detailed conversation with EIC staff (analyst and regional director) to understand the company’s offering and an understanding of efforts taken thus far to entering the US market. • The EIC undertook extensive EICDataStream research in identifying specific project opportunities over a two five-year period, and identified specific contacts consisting of category management with operators, and front-end engineering and procurement for specific EPCs known to be potentially bidding on specific projects. • The EIC then undertook outreach to over 40 contacts in the USA with operators and contractors, introducing ABC Valves, its specific product offering and how it could solve problems for operators and EPCs. This outreach also ascertained interest in meeting with ABC Valves during a planned visit to Houston for OTC. • The EIC received interest from eight companies to meet with ABC Valves, and eight inquires for further information. The EIC confirmed eight meetings developing a visit programme for ABC Valves and put ABC Valves in direct contact with all 16 companies. • The project took the EIC about 60 hours to complete over a course of six weeks. Feedback from the client was excellent, and they have commissioned a second EIC Inform service for Mexico. • Within one year, the company had received several orders and opened a virtual office with the EIC in Houston.
