FEATURE STORY MEET
AUSTIN GARDNER
By Lauren SpeirsA tale of acceptance - the perfect way to describe The Naples Players’ (TNP) production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Austin Gardner’s experience thus far.
Gardner, cast as Claude Frollo, works as a contractor and moved to Naples from Florida’s east coast after Hurricane Ian. “I’ve loved doing theater ever since I was very young, so I looked up local theaters and The Naples Players came up. I feel welcome here and everyone’s been so friendly and professional - they’re such a wonderful group of artists working here. I’m one of the newest in the cast, and our cast and creative team already feel like a happy family. It really is a home away from home here.”
While new to The Naples Players, Austin is no stranger to the stage. “I’ve always loved bringing stories to life. Theatre is an outlet where I can be myself and use my talents, while also stepping into the shoes of different characters, traveling through time, and capturing a lot of amazing ideologies and the encapsulation of the human experience that is found in theater and these amazing stories. When I was eight years old, my
mom entered me into the humorous monologue category of a speech competition. I ended up winning first place in regionals and state. I never stopped doing it, and I won every single year - I even went to Nationals. ”
Eventually, Gardner tried his hand at live theatre at the age of 18 and has been in love with performing ever since. “Performing gives me a feeling of fulfillment I don’t find anywhere else. I think it’s that ‘chasing the dragon’ feeling that keeps me coming back. I’ve never been able to stray too far from it because I’ve fallen in love with the process of being a part of something bigger than myself and creating art that makes people feel. The wonderful, positive experience of creating something with others as a team and creating new life experiences is something that I want to relive over and over.”
TNP has offered Austin a collaborative environment that he has been unable to find at other professional and community theaters. “TNP does a great job of reminding us why we’re all here volunteering. We’re contributing our time for nothing more than the love of theatre. And that’s really the best thing that you can put your time and energy into. It feels like a unit here. You can feel the love from everyone - the cast, the crew, Dawn, Charlie - as soon as you walk through the door. They are all here with one purpose in mind and that is to help you grow as a performer and person. When you grow, everyone grows because we’re a team. It’s important to support one another and look at each other as one cohesive unit exalting the story. ”
While our community and “high-caliber” productions are some of the reasons Austin decid-
ed to audition for TNP, his main reason was the show itself. “I’ve always wanted to do The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The story is so important to tell.”
Gardner says that the audience will be drawn in from the very beginning. “In the first song, Quasimodo comes out and sings the line, ‘what makes a monster and what makes a man?’
I love having the opportunity to not just perform but do it well, and create something that I can be proud of. Theatre has served me so greatly in the past and has made me a better person, and I think here (at TNP) it will continue to do so.
– AUSTIN GARDNER
AUSTIN GARDNER
Continued From Page 11
Shortly after he says that line, he transforms into the hunchback and right away you’re immediately drawn to that theme. What does make a human being? What are some of the things that make a good human being? Love, reaching out to others, respect, promoting well-being, reducing harm; these are all things we look at and say ‘that makes an exemplary human.’ But, beauty is not just skin deep. In many ways, we tend to judge and observe people’s physical characteristics rather than looking at their heart. Despite your physical circumstances, despite your situational circumstances, you can always be a good person. It doesn’t cost you anything to be a good person. The plot promotes that and exalts that principle throughout the entire show. I think the audience is going to very much benefit from the lessons to be learned in the show.”
Working with our industry professionals has been one of Austin’s favorite parts of the process so far. “One of the cast members has already predicted that I’m going to end up staying in this area because of how wonder-
ful the theater is. It’s a pretty tempting offer. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive so far. Dawn and Charlie are both excellent professionals pushing me to do my best in the character (Claude Frollo) and explore new angles that I’ve never explored before, especially with how vastly different I am in person from Frollo. I’ve always appreciated directors that don’t just let you phone it in and really want you to think about your intentions and your motivations and the things that drive the character forward. It expands the creative process and makes it so much more fun. I’ve really appreciated their attention to detail.”
Even just three weeks into the rehearsal process, Austin considers this opportunity “life-changing” and this show to be a “must-see.”
“This show and TNP have really reinforced my love for theater and made me realize and understand that this is something I want to do for the rest of my life. I love having the opportunity to not just perform but do it well, and create something that I can be proud of. Theatre has served me so greatly in the past and has made me a better person, and I think here (at TNP) it will continue to do so.”

“You’re not going to regret seeing The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I’ve invited all of my friends and family to take the two-and-a-halfhour drive to come see it, and I don’t do that with every show. This show is different and it’s definitely one of the most powerful and impactful shows I’ve been in in a long time. Come, enjoy, and ultimately be impressed because we’ve got something really special here. You’ll be glad you did.”
A warm welcome to Austin, and congratulations on your first production at TNP! All of our staff and volunteers love to get new volunteers into the mix! Then and Now
The Feast of Fools (Fête des fous) was a popular medieval festival that took place in Paris and other cities in France. It typically occurred during the Christmas season on or around January 1, and was celebrated by the lower clergy and laypeople.
During the Feast of Fools, traditional roles were turned on their heads and there was much social satire. People mocked the traditional practices of church and society. The lower clergy dressed up in flamboyant costumes, often imitating high-ranking church officials and conducting mock religious ceremonies complete with humorous antics.
The highlight of the Feast of Fools was crowning the “Lord of Misrule” or “King of Fools” who presided over the festivities and was granted temporary authority to issue orders and commands. The Lord of Misrule was usually a commoner or member of the lower clergy who already had a reputation for irreverence.
The Feast of Fools was resound ingly condemned by the Church in the late Middle Ages because it was thought to be irreverent and sacrilegious; yet it continued to be celebrated in various forms throughout Europe for centuries.
If you’re thinking that the celebration that started centuries ago sounds familiar, you’re right! Its influence can still be seen during Mardi Gras and Carnival festivities.

the Cathedral of Notre-Dame
Notre-Dame de Paris (“Our Lady of Paris”) is one of the oldest, best-known cathedrals in the world. Few, if any, internationally revered landmarks have such a storied history.
Construction on the Cathedral of Notre-Dame began in 1163 on Île de la Cité in Paris under the reign of King Louis VII, and took almost 200 years to complete. Many modifications and additions were made over the following centuries.
Over the centuries, NDC has served various non-religious purposes and suffered damage, as in the 1790s when much of its religious imagery was desecrated during the French Revolution. It had fallen into such a state of disrepair in the decades after the Napoleonic Wars that Paris officials even considered its demolition.
Enter Victor Hugo, whose passion for architecture helped rescue this medieval landmark. His novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame not only served as a tribute to the nearly forgotten cathedral, but became so popular among the French public that a 25year restoration project was launched and Notre Dame was transformed into what the world saw and loved before the 2019 fire.
Chanteuse Édith Piaf, too, was inspired by the cathedral. In the French icon’s song, appropriately titled “Notre-Dame de Paris”, she sings about the beauty of the cathedral, the hard work that went into its creation and its future as a Paris landmark. In many ways,
A dramatic history
people regard Piaf’s song as a metaphor for herself…both had a complex history as well as a treasured legacy.
On April 15, 2019, an electrical short circuit likely sparked a blaze that threatened to burn the 850-year-old cathedral to the ground. Following a strict protocol developed for just such a disaster, firefighters knew exactly which works of art to rescue and in which order.
Since the devastating fire, restoration work has been nonstop and reconstruction began in 2021. A Te Deum* is planned for April 15, 2024,
*The Te Deum had a powerful and remedial effect on people during the medieval era. It was believed that people were cured of terminal diseases during the singing of the hymn, while others regained their sight on hearing it. Some were said to have been arisen or awakened from the dead as the hymn was sung.

What Makes a
What Makes a Man? Monster ;
From the start, we know that there is more to the character than the hump on his back. We understand Quasimodo’s physical and mental challenges; and rather than be repulsed, we empathize. His speech, when talking to his friends the gargoyles, is clear and unafraid. Notice the differences when he must communicate with Frollo and the others.
They see limitations, deformity, and ugliness in Quasimodo. Yet he doesn’t have the limitations that others see in him. There is no stutter when he talks; there are no physical disabilities or limitations; those are only seen by the public. Others may find him likable and relatable.
The play’s themes of love, kindness, and understanding seem especially relevant today. And one message is to love the people who are closest to you.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray all tell tales of men and monsters. Identifying which characters fit into which category, however, isn’t totally straightforward.
We think of other instances of this man/monster conflict in literature and film.
Frankenstein is motivated by pride, scientific curiosity, and his hope to heal human faults and build a huge creature from corpse parts. These become so ugly in life that no one can treat his monster with anything but fear and rage.
Dr. Jekyll is driven to resolve the inner conflict between the good and evil halves of his soul. The conflict leads him to unleash on the world a being of pure, demoniacal malevolence.
Oscar Wilde has two of his characters shower the young, beautiful Dorian Gray so strongly with their love that he turns to a life of inescapable and damnable immorality.
Can any of these fictional creations be fully blamed for their actions? They are fictional characters who perhaps become monsters because their creators have given them no choice. Yet if their creators are truly responsible for the beings to whom they give life, doesn’t that make them the monsters?
Everyone has a choice.
