A Posy

Fit For Royalty Plumbing & Heating Engineers Offering 24hr Service With 40 Years Experience

Keech Hospice care celebrated it’s 25th anniversary in August and to mark the occasion the Bedfordshire based charity had a visit from The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge. Keech Hospice provides care for residents in Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes and Hertfordshire and requires £5.3million each year to ensure it’s survival. The Charity relies on 70% of this funding to come from it’s community. Jackie Richardson of Dunstable was cared for by Keech Hospice Care’s adult in-patient unit where she died from Breast Cancer in July 2014 Prior to her death Jackie and daughter Amy Richardson, also from Dunstable, set up The Daisy Chain Florist on Lowther Rd, Dunstable which Amy now runs with her sister. Last year Amy, her dad and three sisters, along with extended family, sailed round the Isle Of White raising over £50,000 for Keech, under the name Team Jackie. For the Royal Visit, Keech were keen to involve as many patients, relatives, staff and volunteers during the proceedings and Amy was asked to use her floritstry skills to design a posy which was presented to The Duchess Of Cambridge as she left. The Posy was designed to symbolise the occasion with purple Calla Lilies, Freesias and Hydrangeas to represent the colours of Adult Care at Keech Hospice and it was held together with silver ribbon to mark 25 years of Adult Care.

LOCAL RIO HERO At the time of writing, Liam Irons, a 25 year old footballer from Dunstable will be on a return flight from Rio having been called up to represent Team GB at the Paralympics Games as part of the 7-aside football team for players with Cerebral Palsy. Liam, who attended Mill Vale Middle School and Queensbury Upper, has always played mainstream football in Bedfordshire and currently plays for 61FC in the Spartan South Midlands Football League. His manager at the club and Beds FA Chairman, Richard Everitt, said “Everybody at 61 FC are very proud of what Liam has achieved, it is a reward for lots of hard work and dedication which Liam has put into his game.” Liam, who was diagnosed with Cerabal Palsy, also plays for Saints FC on Sundays and it was while playing for the side that he was spotted by an opposition manager who also has the condition. He put Liam in contact with national CP football coach Jeff Davis who sent a scout to watch Liam play which led to him being invited to train with the squad. CP (Cerabal Palsy) football is a 7 a-side fast-paced, tough tackling game with lots of technique and skill. It has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1984 and this

year teams from 8 nations qualified for the finals in Rio. There are seven players from each team on the pitch - in addition to seven on the bench. Because there is no off side rule, matches are open and exciting with teams able to adopt a more direct, attacking style. Throw-ins can be completed with one hand, rolling the ball onto the playing field. Matches last 60 minutes, divided into two 30-minute halves, with a 15-minute interval between them. Until six months ago Liam was unaware that there was a CP team, having always played mainstream football. He now found himself faced with the challenge of preparing to represent his country as part of Team GB, something he had only previously dreamed about. Before flying out to Brazil, the team was put through a rigorous training camp at FA National Football Centre, St. Georges Park, which Liam describes as “an amazing place”. The elite level strength and conditioning was the first of many new experiences for Liam but he took it all in his stride and in the past six months his attitude and commitment to his game has changed completely. Liam says “It has completely changed my approach to football as I’m now training six days a week which includes strength and conditioning with a coach and lots of sprint and agility work. They have also taught me to play a lot calmer and relaxed which has improved my decision making on and off the ball”

Liam’s first chance to represent the team was at a pre-Paralympic tournament in Spain where his training and dedication paid off, scoring in his debut against Ireland. Arriving in Rio Liam was impressed by the Paralympics village and his fellow athletes. “The place is truly inspiring, the things you see on a day to day basis is quite remarkable. The lengths to which some of the athletes go to get themselves so that they can compete in the games is incredible.” The team were also lucky enough to get some pointers from one of the biggest stars of Rio 2016. “Alex Danson, who won Gold with the women’s hockey team, gave us an inspirational talk. She went into detail about how and why they did so well. It was great to meet someone like Alex let alone hear about her experiences and advice.” Liam’s Team GB debut came against hosts Brazil. Not a bad way to start your international career and he reflected that despite the result, “It was still one of the best experiences of my life.” The second game saw Team GB lose 2-1 to the favourites Ukraine, who went on to claim gold. Team GB then smashed five past Ireland in their final game to set up a 5th place playoff with rivals Argentina. A feisty 2-0 win meant the CP 7 a-side achieved the highest finish in their history. Liam’s girlfriend, Carly Smith, commented “We are so proud of Liam and everything he has achieved. Liam’s family and I have watched all of his games together, cheering him on from home. We can’t wait to see him now and welcome him home.” Summing up his experience of the games, Liam said “We finished Rio 2016 in 5th place with a 2-0 win over Argentina. That’s the highest the Team GB football team have ever finished. It’s been by far the best experience of my life and I have enjoyed every minute of it. All of the squad and staff have bonded so well and it’s great to have been on this journey with them. I think we can come home knowing that we gave our all and competed with the best teams in the tournament.”

It’s fair to say many events during the games have captured our attention and hearts. There is something wonderfully personal and relatable about the Paralympics. Perhaps this is why we felt such a connection with Liam’s journey. Liam’s personality and achievements deserve special recognition and a willingness to share his new experiences through his Paralympic Diary only highlights his character. Josh Spavins (Bedfordshire FA Disability Football lead) said “Liam’s story has done so much for young players with disabilities in Bedfordshire. His remarkable story is proof that nothing can stop you pursuing your dreams. We’d like to encourage any footballers with disabilities to explore the opportunities out there.” This was something echoed by Liam when asked about his hopes for the future, Liam said “Having had the great coaching I have received, I definitely think I would love to get into coaching when I can’t play anymore, to share all I have learnt with local clubs and players. He added “It was a massive privilege to be asked to go on Channel 4 Live to talk about the games. Hopefully I can help promote the sport to any CP players watching at home.” “Finally, I would just like to add that any disabled players playing mainstream football should make sure they try and get in touch with Jeff Davies because the possibilities could be life-changing - it has been for me. “ If you would like to get involved in football, regardless of ability or disability, Beds FA would like to hear from you. Disability sessions run across the county and you can contact Josh Spavins for full details at Josh.spavins@ bedfordshirefa.com Read Liam’s Paralympic Diary and check out Disability Football online via the Bedfordshire FA. Don’t Wait Until Winter For Your Flu Jab Local doctors are urging people in Bedfordshire to have the flu jab well before winter, and say it is especially important for those at risk of more serious health complications and even death from flu.

The flu vaccine is available from the NHS free of charge to:

In Bedfordshire over 1,000 people were admitted to hospital last winter because of flu. Public Health teams are especially concerned that the number of pregnant women who had the flu jab last winter fell by 6.7 per cent compared with the previous year, and less than half of two year olds, and adults under 65 who have health conditions had the flu vaccine.

• pregnant women • young children • carers • people in long term care facilities • anyone with a long term health condition, such as heart disease, diabetes or neurological conditions • people over 65.

Dr Dayo Kuku, Respiratory Clinical Lead for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, and a GP, said: “You can’t get flu from the jab. The vaccine stimulates your body's immune system to make antibodies which attack the flu virus. The flu vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu – so even if you had a jab last winter, you need another one this year to stay safe.”

The vaccine is safe and effective, and can reduce the chances of getting flu and its complications by 70 per cent and of death from flu by 80 per cent.

If you are eligible for the free flu jab, you can get it from your GP or local pharmacy. If you aren’t eligible for a free flu jab, you can still receive the vaccination from your local pharmacy for a small fee.

Last year 57 per cent of Bedfordshire residents who were entitled to a free flu vaccine took up the offer, and local health leaders are keen for more people to get protection from the virus, which can be life threatening.

Find out more by visiting www.nhs.uk and search for ‘flu vaccine’.

Got a child aged 2, 3 or 4? Flu can be serious for young children. Help protect them from flu with one simple nasal spray. It’s free, fast and painless. Don’t put it off. Take up the offer from your GP as soon as you can.

Zebra Properties

Goes From Strength To Strength With two new look offices, a fresh rebrand, and a £multi-million portfolio of managed properties, family-run estate agent Zebra Properties is on its way to becoming one of Central Bedfordshire’s big success stories, proving that a focus on local people and local knowledge is the secret to selling and managing properties.

Come and Help Us Celebrate in Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard!

AGENT, Property Ombudsman, and the Central Beds Trading Standards.

We’ve built up a strong reputation in Leighton Buzzard over the past 5 years with our lettings and block management, which allowed us to expand into Houghton Regis and take over Roger Marsh & Co two years ago.

The Only Estate Agent Approved by Central Bedfordshire Trading Standards

When we took over Roger Marsh & Co, we kept all of the long-standing, experienced staff and recruited more team members to further enhance the business and its service level. The office has now been completely rebranded, refurbished and improved ready to continue as the leading property sales, lettings and management company in town, ready for the arrival of nearly 7000 new homes over the next 10 -15 years. Our new Leighton Buzzard property sales office opens at No.12, High Street in September 2016. Please pop in and say hello!

Local Properties, Local Knowledge and Local Staff We put local people at the centre of everything we do. We support the community by employing local people where possible (which also builds on our local knowledge) and we make sure they’re looked after. We invest in the team and their careers, which should also give you extra peace of mind in their ability to sell or look after your property too. As a result, both offices have qualified ARLA and NAEA team members. Zebra Properties as a company is also accredited by ARLA, NALS, SAFE

18 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

People wishing to buy, sell or rent out their homes are looking for something more from an estate agent these days. As a family-run, home-grown business we believe that you’ll experience a much more personal and friendly service, with an attention to detail that has been recognised by Central Beds Trading Standards. Whether you’re a home buyer, seller or landlord, please do come in and talk to us about what you want from your next move or rental.

Zebra Properties is currently offering FREE property valuations to everyone in the local area. Visit www.zebra-properties.co.uk for details.

Classes Resume At Ardley Hill Academy After Flood Jazzercise is a global dance-fitness class which was founded in America 45 years ago and has been in Dunstable for over 20 years. So why are we still here? Because Jazzercise is constantly evolving and it works! Jazzercise is a pulse-pounding, beat-pumping, bodyblasting fitness program that gets you results…fast. It’s a high intensity dance party that fuses cardio, strength, Pilates, hip hop, yoga and kickboxing. Instructor Angela Veryard is excited to be adding 2 new classes at Ardley Hill Academy to her schedule. After previously having classes in various school and church halls around Dunstable, and sadly having to leave Brewers Hill school when it recently closed down, the first new class took place at Ardley Hill the day before it was flooded in a freak storm in June! "It was devastating for all the children and staff at the school, and obviously our classes had to be postponed. However, the newly refurbished school is now open again and we are excited to continue our Jazzercise classes on Mondays" said Angela.

There will be a brand new low impact class from 7pm - 7.45pm, followed by a Dance-Mixx class from 7.45pm - 8.45pm. Both classes feature dance moves to various songs, from PitBull to Justin Timberlake, Buble to. Beyoncé. and muscle toning /strengthening for a whole body workout. If you like to dance you'll love Jazzercise! Both classes are suitable for all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes and the low impact class is ideal for those who prefer an all standing class concentrating on fun dance moves without jumping. No need to pre-book, just come along and we have a new customer offer of 3 classes for £10, usual prices are £6 per class or £24 per month for unlimited classes. See class schedule below. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN W FRANKLY SINATRA

Starring Stephen Triffitt - the world’s No1 Frank Sinatra Thursday 3rd November 2016 - 8.00pm Grove Theatre Dunstable Tickets: £25.00 - £23.00 Box Office: 01582 60 20 80 www.grovetheatre.co.uk The world’s No1 Frank Sinatra, Stephen Triffitt, is coming to town to celebrate the golden anniversary of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ most famous recording – Sinatra Live at the Sands. This brand-new production features many of the songs from the classic album, performed just the way they were back in 1966. Stephen is famed for performing classic hits Fly Me to the Moon, Mack the Knife, New York, New York, My Way, That’s Life, Under My Skin and Lady is a Tramp with all Frank’s laid back charm. Authenticity can be assured: star of the show, Stephen Triffitt, has himself enjoyed three seasons at Las Vegas’ Sands Casino portraying Frank and he created the role of Ol’ Blue Eyes in the original West End production of The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas. Show producer, Michael Taylor, says “There’s no better Sinatra! Stephen Triffitt has sold out the London Palladium twice and the Royal Festival Hall with solo concert shows. In Frankly Sinatra he skilfully dips in and out of character to tell the fascinating tale of the greatest vocalist and most charismatic performer of our time.” The critics agree. The London Evening Standard describes Stephen’s resemblance to Sinatra as ”unsettlingly perfect”. Frankly Sinatra comes to Grove Theatre Dunstable on Thursday 3rd November and we’ve got 2 tickets up for grabs! To enter simply tell us: In what year did Sinatra perform Live At The Sands? Email your answers to win@thevinemagazine.co.uk One winner will be selected at random no later that 24th October.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Dunstable, Luton & surrounding areas areas and manager Tom Bliss

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tom a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Pensioners View

Which Way The Welfare State?

T

his is a question that any citizen of the UK has a right to ask after the news during August showed the present parlous state of our N.H.S.

A wonderful system of what used to be a flagship for the rest of the world but is now in tatters after many governments since the inception of the N.H.S have done little to support its aims and ambitions, always claiming lack of funding. The funding is supplied by you, the tax payer, unless you are a pensioner - you have already paid your dues and should be reaping the benefits. But we hear on almost a daily basis that the N.H.S cannot meet its obligations due to lack of funding. We have now reached a position where according to the news of the day that a Northern Clinical Commissioning Group was contemplating non vital operations, cataracts, knee replacements should be suspended for four months to save money they badly need to keep operating as a hospital and meeting all of its requirements. How have we reached this position? Why is there a lack of money to support the N.H.S ? We have millions of more people in the country since the N.H.S was launched. Do these extra numbers not pay the requirements of the National Insurance Funds? Are they not taxed on their earning? Why is the N.H.S short of funds? One answer may well be the number of new hospitals that were built and paid for by a very large mortgage over a many years. We needed such hospitals but it must have been apparent another

By Mike Newman

source of taxation should have been raised to cover such expense rather than deplete the N.H.S budget? A N.H.S will be expensive to operate, the huge leap forwards by the medical profession and other researchers on treatment of various human problems will ensure this as an ongoing fact. Not all cures will be labelled as unaffordable, indeed should this be the case at all. If this is so then we do exist in a system that recognises only the rich should have cover that ordinary patients should be entitled to. So where could the government, regardless of its political manifesto it offers to the voter, actually pay for what it is supposed to supply to the U.K citizen. One that springs to mind is the millions of pounds we pay to foreign countries that used to be members of the empire. Some of which are well up on 'looking after' themselves. The never ending enquiries that cost millions and no body in the general public bothers to read. The parliament as a whole needs to closely study what really needs to be done and what can be treated as superfluous to requirements. This must be a decision made by all M.P's and common sense used rather than a three line party whip if we really want to make the N.H.S as it should and this, of course, would need to ensure that all staff wages should meet the sum of money they really should be expected to receive as set by the B.M.A rather than the government. We, as pensioners, have paid for an inclusive N.H.S and will accept no less. One last word, RING FENCE THE N.H.S FUND NOW.

Have your say

Looking Up!

See A Galaxy Far Far Away: Grab some binoculars and head up into the Chilterns on a moonless evening in the second half of October, or second half of November. High up to your south-east look for a large square pattern of stars. From the top of the square follow an arc of brighter stars running northwards. Select the next star along the arc from the square then look for a fainter star slightly above it. Sweep your binoculars up above this fainter star and you’ll find a soft glow of light in the sky from the Andromeda Galaxy – a collection of more than a trillion stars in a slow swirl around a supermassive black hole 2.5 million light years away!

Take The Autumn Shooting Star Challenge: 21 October and 17 November mark

the dates of maximum activity for two autumn meteor showers. For both showers look to the south-east sky between midnight and dawn. If you’re lucky you might spot a rash of shooting stars firing across the sky from that direction. It’ll be a challenge this year as moonlight is set to drown out all but the brightest meteors.

Watch Orion Rising: November sees the

return of Orion to Bedfordshire’s evening sky. Look to the south-east from 10pm onwards for this iconic constellation – a rectangle of bright stars with a line of three stars across its middle forming Orion’s Belt.

A Travellers Tale The Incas and Machu Pichu Part II The reason for our being taken to Lake Titicaca was to see the “floating islands”. These constructions are truly mind boggling since they are made of reeds - and nothing other than reeds. But before describing these amazing islands, let me give a few facts and figures about Lake Titicaca itself. It’s big - very big - and is roughly 120 miles long and 50 miles wide. It straddles the Peru/Bolivia border and, at 12500 feet above sea level, is the highest navigable lake in the world. Its water is unpolluted meaning that it teems with fish and wildfowl and is also potable for humans. There are something like 40 of these floating islands - called the Uros Islands - which are inhabited by the descendents of the Uro tribe who fled to this area centuries ago following some tribal conflict. There are vast areas of a particular variety of reed growing around the shores and the early escapees developed an ingenious way of building layer upon layer of reeds upon a reed base so as to produce a floating island - and, therefore, further refuge, protection and escape. And what is more, if something goes wrong, it is possible to row an island to another, more favourable, location! They’ve got it all sussed! To walk on one of these islands produces a most strange sensation since, because it is floating, everywhere “bounces” and it feels almost as though one is drunk. But the dominant impression which one gets is that everything - and I do mean everything - is made from reeds : the houses, other buildings and constructions, and even their different types of boat are all made from reeds.

By Paul Heley

Reed boat on Lake Titicaca

Their economy is based on trading at the markets ashore where they sell fish, wildfowl and eggs in addition to a variety of fabrics which the women weave. Visiting tourists are also a source of income and a small charge is made when landing on an island but they also hope to sell examples of their highly coloured and patterned fabrics. They even offer accommodation as well! But the other thing which is immediately noticeable is that the women are extremely fat. This, however, is regarded as something beautiful; skinny women are thought to be useless when it comes to child bearing (and cat walk models wouldn’t get a second glance!). They maintain their elephantine figures by eating loads of potatoes and also the succulent roots of the reeds themselves - both of which are high in starch. We were told that the roots taste like celery but when I tried one later, it was simply crunchy, liquidy, not unpleasant, but didn’t taste of anything at all. We also visited another (non floating) island where the people were of a different culture and were shown their particular designs regarding shawls, cumberbunds, hats, table runners, etc. Dependant upon your particular hat or cumberbund, so it states whether you are male, female, married or single. After Puno and Lake Titicaca, it was time for the long journey on the “Andean Explorer” train to Cusco - the “Inca capital of the Americas”. The journey took 10 hours winding its way across the Altiplano (the high plateau of the Andean region) and passing through (rather than around) the infrequent towns and small villages. But for mile upon mile, the country

38 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

is completely empty apart from an occasional, isolated farm. This really is living away from the madding crowd. So if you want to get out of the rat race of civilised society, then...! Roughly halfway through the journey, the train made a brief stop at La Raya, the highest point reached at approximately 13500 feet. And, as with every stopping point on the entire trip, there were hordes of people trying to sell the usual trinkets and fabrics. Generally speaking, the Altiplano scenery is rather “samey” so, in order to pass the time, we were entertained by a fashion show (with the crew as models), and a maniacal “demon” who danced about and growled at everyone. We were also served a lunch and afternoon tea but, basically, it was just admire the scenery and take in the culture. As Cusco drew nearer, however, so the scenery became more majestic as we rode alongside a tumbling river with towering mountains on either side. But even though the train had left Puno at 8am, it was dark by the time we reached Cusco at 6.30 pm when we were driven to our comfortable hotel via the clean and tidy city centre. Cusco is the place where one learns about the Incas and their history. To start with, they were just another of the scores of individual tribes occupying these Andean regions of South America; but over the course of centuries they gradually became the dominant tribe having conquered all others along a 2500 mile stretch of land from Quito (in present day Ecuador) to Santiago (in Chile). This sequence of conquest, of course, took considerable time and it was not until the 1400s that the Inca

“empire” was finally established. But, ironically, it was relatively short lived before it, in its turn, fell prey to the Spanish Conquest in 1532. However, and during that comparatively short period of time, the Incas managed to build some outstanding and amazing constructions - such as the fortress of Machu Pichu - without the use of mortar. They had devised a way of carving massive stone blocks so that one block is fashioned to fit exactly against another stone block without there being any gap where they touch. For example, one block in Cusco shows where it had been fashioned in twelve different places so as to fit perfectly against its neighbour. There are remnants of original Inca walls all over Cusco and a number of special buildings show off this skill to the full. We also went to the ruins of the huge former hilltop temple at Sacsayhuamen where one can only gasp in amazement at the sheer scale of the place and the massive blocks of stone used in its creation. These people must have had a supreme skill -yet did not use mortar and, apparently, had no knowledge of the wheel or of writing. But, somehow, they also managed to

40 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

construct something like 25000 miles of roadway through this difficult terrain. Although their constructional achievements were incredible, they were also artists of the highest calibre as well and created works of art in gold, silver, and precious stones. However, when the Spanish arrived in their quest for gold and other riches, the Incas were quickly and easily overcome because they couldn’t compete with guns and artillery. And then their troubles really started as they were ruthlessly suppressed by their disease ridden and very cruel masters. In addition to Inca relics, we were also taken to the cathedral and one or two other buildings of significance. The cathedral was extremely ornate and was absolutely dripping with gilt, and when I asked how is it possible to square such obvious opulence and wealth inside with the grinding poverty outside, I was told that “if I had faith, I wouldn’t ask questions like that”. So I remain unconvinced. But the final aspects of the trip were fast approaching so it was now time to visit the “Sacred Valley of the Incas” and to experience the amazing citidel of Machu Pichu itself.

In Theen Gard

A Colourful Grand Finale So, if you are now looking out on a bare garden with little colour, think about the ornamentals you could plant to add some pizzazz to the scene and contrast well with each other. Autumn colour shows up best with a solid, dark background such as conifers and evergreen shrubs, so bear this in mind when planning. Trees should be used carefully so that their effect is a highlight rather than just a small part of a busy planting scheme. Green is still the most important colour in the garden and should therefore be the most prevalent, so don't overdo it with bright-leafed plants or the effect will not be restful. The ornamental cherry (Prunus sargentii) is a wonderful specimen whose young leaves are red, turning to dark green. In early autumn they become brilliant orange-red and finally a deep red. The leaves don't drop at the first hint of frost, but last longer on the tree. A smaller tree is the Persian ironwood (Parrotia persica), which grows to eight metres and whose leaves turn to a patchwork of orange, bright red and purple-red in autumn, although it needs acid soil for good leaf colour. Combine trees and shrubs of different hues. The rich, deep reds and burgundies of Japanese maples such as Acer

palmatum 'Bloodgood' contrast beautifully with the yellowing leaves of silver birch, while Chinese lanterns (Physalis alkekengi) provide additional warmth with their bright orange, lantern-shaped fruits, ideally in a large shrub border in a woodland setting. Plant perennials such as bearded irises at the front of the display for structural foliage from spring to autumn, and for flower colour earlier in the year. If you don't have room to add more plants to your borders, select a Japanese maple in a pot for warm autumn colour. Choose a container at least 30cm in diameter and a compost comprising equal parts John Innes No 2 potting compost and a soil-less multipurpose compost. Add lots of drainage material in the base of the pot and top-dress the compost with gravel. Ideal specimens for a pot include A palmatum dissectum 'Garnet', whose leaves open bright red and then deepen to a rich garnet colour. This deciduous acer is very slow growing - up to 1.8m in 10 years and looks great alongside a pond or in an ornamental planter. Acers should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. The foliage colour is best in dappled shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Shrubs can also provide dazzling foliage tints and flowers. Look out for

Euonymus alatus, the spindle bush, which is a world away from the compact, variegated evergreen forms we use for shady gardens and winter hanging baskets. This one is deciduous, but produces spectacular autumn colour, producing a molten crimson display. It is medium-sized, fitting into most gardens. Other good choices for autumn colour include Hebe 'Autumn Glory', which produces purple bottle-brush flowers which can last until Christmas, and the oak-leafed hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), whose leaves turn purple in autumn and hang on to the plant for ages. If you have a wall which looks bare in the cooler months, train a colourful pyracantha along it, such as P 'Orange Glow', which produces clusters of sizzling orange autumn berries and white spring flowers. This evergreen shrub has a vigorous, dense and spiny habit and can also be planted as a barrier hedge. Train it like a cordon, and in years to come it will reward you (and the birds) with masses of colourful berries. Other shrubs with colourful autumn fruits include Berberis x carminea 'Pirate King', Callicarpa bodinieri var giraldii 'Profusion' and Cotoneaster salicifolius 'Rothschildianus'. Autumn in the garden can truly be the firework display before the more muted tones of winter set in.

Transform Your Kitchen In Just Two Days

Before The kitchen is the heart of every home, from the chaos of getting the children off to school, the grabbed coffee before work, preparing the Sunday roast with family and friends gathered round or maybe a quiet moment to yourself with a cup of tea. Did you know the average UK household spend about 6 hours cooking a week? That doesn’t include eating, chats over coffee, using the kitchen table as an office and all of the other time we spend in the hub of our house. Is it any wonder that so many of us spend time dreaming of our perfect kitchen? A new kitchen is also said to add between 2-5% to the value of your home but with new kitchens costing between £5,000 and £8,000+ at the budget end and £10,000+ for a bespoke solution, you may need to re-mortgage just to afford one. Not to mention living off take-aways for weeks, or every meal with your parents, the dust, noise and disruption of the builders. Fortunately a new and growing trend is to avoid the mess, disruption and huge costs by having a kitchen makeover and it is not hard to understand why. Most kitchens have already maximised the space available and all that is needed is a facelift. Replacement kitchen doors and perhaps a new sink and worktops can transform a kitchen in 1-2 days.

46 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

After Imagine staying away for a day and arriving back to a completely tranformed kitchen. The beauty of using a professional company such as Dream Doors is that everything will be properly fitted for you and tidied up afterwards without a huge upheaval and overnight you have increased the value of your home and saved yourself £1000’s off the cost of a new kitchen, can’t be bad! Okay if you wanted the new sink and worktops it might be two nights. The other beauty of a makeover is that you can go a little wild knowing that when trends change you can change too. So if you fancied metallic blue doors or a vibrant orange release your inner desires knowing that in 5 years you can change again without the huge cost or ripping out the entire kitchen and starting again. If you are looking at a makeover purely to increase the value of your home for sale then pick a neutral colour and use less expensive accessories to bring the look together. The fashion is for high gloss finish and if you look around any show home at the moment there are reflective surfaces everywhere so steal their ideas and go light, bright and shiny to increase your chances of a quick sale. For ideas and inspiration why not speak to Mark Stephen at Dream Doors South Beds Tel: 01525 888026.

Further information from Mary Chapman 01582 603710 LIPREADING CLASS: DUNSTABLE Did you know that one in six people in this country have some kind of hearing problem? Hearing loss can affect anyone of any age. Hearing aids have improved enormously, they use all the advances in modern technology, but even the best aids don’t cure hearing loss. It is still a problem to hear in noisy social or work environments, but all is not lost. Research has shown that joining a lipreading class helps to avoid the damaging social isolation that can accompany hearing loss. Lipreading classes teach you to let your eyes

help your ears fill in the things you miss. They are small friendly classes, and as well as learning lipreading we cover, how hearing works and the things that can go wrong, equipment and organisations that can help, strategies to cope in various situations, and much more, oh, and we laugh a lot! My name is Molly Berry, and I am profoundly deaf, I started losing my hearing when I was in my thirties, and 7 years ago I was given a Cochlear Implant. It was very successful, and so I decided to retrain as a lipreading tutor to pass on the skills I relied on. I teach in Beds. Bucks and Herts, and there is now a class in Dunstable on a Wednesday afternoon. For more information about this and other classes or to join a class, call or text me on 07741 095921 or email me at mb.lipreading@gmail.com CHEDDINGTON BOWLS CLUB Your Local Bowls Club are Champions

Having been runners up in the League and knocked out Chalfont St Peters and Burnham on the way to the final, Cheddington Bowls Club’s men had a convincing win over Amersham, 85 - 62, in the Buckinghamshire Plate Final. Captain Dave Finch received the trophy and the championship flag from the BBA president Chris Cole, after the two teams and their supporters had enjoyed a few drinks and a celebration lunch. This was the first time Cheddington Bowls Club had reached the final, so the win is something special. The team was drawn from bowlers from Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, Tring, Dunstable as well as from the villages around Cheddington. If you want to Give Bowls A Go, contact Tony on 01525 220644 the club is not just a summer season club, for the club has an all year round calendar.
