A Travellers Tale The Splendours Of India Palaces, Temples & Tigers (?) - Part 1 By Paul Heley

India Gate

Garden at Ghandhi Smriti Qutab Minar

Memorial to 1620 landing place 14

I

ndia. The very name itself conjures up different images for different people. Some immediately think of an immense history, of exquisite architecture, unimaginably beautiful buildings, a uniquely romantic culture; whilst others think of a chaotic and corrupt society, of filth and squalor everywhere, of grinding poverty, political corruption and extreme class distinction. I’ve been to India on five separate occasions and each time has been different regarding, for example, the geography be it coastal, mountainous or inland; the environment be it urban or rural. And, putting these experiences together, I can say “Yes” to each of the above. The place is incredibly diverse and so completely unlike anything that one sees in Britain (or, indeed, in the western world) that comparisons are almost pointless. People who have never been consider that I exaggerate grossly. I suppose I can say that, personally, I have a love/hate relationship with the place - in roughly equal measure: because, on the one hand, I am fascinated, intrigued, amazed at every turn whilst on the other hand, I am horrified, disgusted and appalled at what I see all around me. So how did Val and I fare on this particular trip? We started off at Delhi where we met our guides:- Daniele, the tour company representative, who kept us up to date regarding the daily timetable as to what was planned, where to meet and at what time. The other guide, Abhi, gradually evolved into a human encyclopaedia regarding the detailed history of every place visited together with a catalogue of the rulers, moguls, emperors or princes. Information came at us like bullets from a machine gun but, I’m afraid, it was all very intense and full of unfamiliar and unusual names. But in addition over the course of the fortnight, Abhi steered us through the minefield of Indian bureaucracy and “greased” many necessary palms. It would be very difficult to negiotiate one’s way around India without someone like Abhi to hold your hand. There seems to be a standard tour of Delhi because I’d already been to most of the places before. Still, it was nice to have another look at Jama Masjid - the largest mosque (not only in Delhi but also in India). Wonderful islamic architecture in red sandstone and marble with typical curves, arcs and twirls. Then the obligatory Ghandhi circuit of Raj Ghat where he was cremated and Ghandhi Smriti, (his former home, now a museum), where there’s a fantastic amount of information about his life and the political build up to his assassination in 1948. Both places are regarded as very sacred. Next, the very impressive India Gate constructed to commemorate India’s release from British rule with the names of all the people who fell in the struggle carved into its walls. It’s reminiscent of the Menin Gate at Ypres. After this, we left the comparative calm and orderliness of New Delhi and entered the cacophany of tiny streets with their hundreds of little shops found in Old Delhi. This was more like the “real” India, ie chaotic, shambolic, noisy, dirty, smelly. And something which must have hit the “first timers” like a bomb is that India has an extremely large population - well over a billion people - because everywhere was absolutely heaving. Especially with trashy trinket sellers. They come at you from all directions; they are incredibly persistent; they will not take No for an answer; they are extremely annoying. But it’s a fact of life in India - and tourists are seen to be incredibly wealthy (which, of course, they are in comparison).

A Travellers Tale (Continued)

The Old State House, Boston

Humayan’s Tomb City Palace, Udiapur

After lunch we were shown Humayan’s Tomb and the Char Bagh gardens. Another beautiful building (Persian inspired) with gardens laid out in a geometric sequence of squares within squares within squares with fountains at nodal points. Mathematically pleasing and very restful. Finally it was off to Qutab Minar which is of considerable archaeological interest with pride of place going to the 250 ft high, ornately carved minaret (or “victory tower”). There are also cloisters whose pillars show intricately decorated Hindu carvings. A very impressive monument. Time now to leave Delhi and fly to Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan amidst paranoid airport security and bureaucrocracy. It was times like this that Abhi came into his own and he piloted us through what could have been a nightmare. Upon arrival, we found that Udaipur is set on the side of Lake Pichola and is described as the “Venice of the East”. They’re telling porkies - it’s nothing like Venice! Our first trip was to the City Palace - an ancient, huge building with hundreds of small rooms attracting thousands of visitors. Once inside, we

were “physically transported” on a conveyor belt of people from room to room and image to image. It would have been impossible to try and move in the opposite direction so great was the crush. Not the place for anyone suffering from claustrophobia! After lunch, an uninspiring boat trip to an island in the lake followed by a lively tuc-tuc ride back to the coach and to our hotel. That night we turned in early because tomorrow was to be a long day. The next day meant hours in the coach as we drove from Udaipur to Jaipur on a surprisingly good road across the flat, featureless plain which is central India. After the chaotic driving in Delhi and Udiapur, it was a relief to have relative peace on the open road. But one is never completely free of people and their amazing driving techniques; even though, now, they only came at us one at a time rather than twenty all at once! En route we passed through rural villages and realised just how poor some of the people really are - if delapidated shacks and hovels which serve as homes are any indication. And as with everywhere else, there were cows, dogs, pigs and goats simply wandering about and scratching around in the general rubbish looking for something to eat. But so that we shouldn’t be bored with the unrelenting scenery, Abhi decided we should learn something about India and Hindu culture. He taught us to count - successfully - up to ten in Hindi; he outlined the “rules of the road” regarding driving in India - and how they are totally ignored (which was already fairly obvious!); and he explained the workings of the caste system and arranged marriages. Driving “rules” caused considerable amusement but the other topics generated heated discussion; and a feeling that the caste system alone contributes enormously towards India’s serious corruption problems. We also learnt something about the principal Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - the gods of creation, preservation and destruction/restoration respectively - and of their extremely complicated genealogy. There are many other gods such as Krishna, and Ganesha, son of Shiva, who is, perhaps, the most popular of all since he is the bringer of good fortune. Buddha is also on the list somewhere but it’s all very, very involved and I doubt if many Hindus understand it either. It was much too much for me. After a long, but interesting day, we arrived at Jaipur - known as the “Pink City” - so called because of the colour of much of the building stone in the old town.

Better still, the www.zara.com Spain website has an English language option, you can compare prices before you go (you can’t order UK delivery from it). Clothes there are often cheaper in euros than in pounds, even before the currency conversion. In fact on a basket of goods it was on average 38% cheaper. Some of you may think ‘ah yes I’ve seen the euro price on some labels in the UK’, but that’s usually the French price, which is generally more expensive. This trick works for others in the same group, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and Uterque. If a loan’s advertised at 3.9% rep APR, they’re allowed to charge 20%. Every loan these days is listed as a ‘representative’ or ‘rep’ APR - that means by law only 51% of accepted applicants need to get the advertised rate. The rest can be and usually are charged more, and there’s no cap on how much more. Worse, the only way to know is to apply, and that leaves a footprint on your credit file. So be very careful. One way to mitigate this somewhat is to use the calculator at www.mse.me/eligibility which tells you your odds of being accepted without marking your credit file. The higher your acceptance odds the more likely you are to get the advertised rate, although it’s not guaranteed.

doesn’t hide that you can do this, but it’s a good trick. Just login to your www.amazon.co.uk music library to see if you’ve any past tracks available. As JHL1959 told me: “Crikey, it’s given me 182 albums, that’s 2,367 tracks. Amazingly, I still like a lot of them - cheered me up.”

Only get good mobile signal with one network? Switch to a piggyback. Many people tell me “I wish I could switch network but only Vodafone/EE works in my home.” Yet there’s a way to switch provider but keep the same signal... Only EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 are actual mobile networks, yet there are many cheap virtual networks piggybacking on the same signal. E.g. Giffgaff is O2, Asda is EE, TalkMobile is Vodafone and Shebang is Three (full piggyback list at www.mse.me/piggyback). So check which other providers piggyback on your existing network and see if they’re cheaper. Energy firms can’t charge exit penalties within 49 days of a fix ending. If you’re on a cheap fixed energy deal you needn’t wait until the last day to switch to avoid exit fees as rules state that 49 days before your fix ends, you’re allowed to switch without penalty.

Play the codeshare trick - where two airlines sell the same flight. Airlines don’t shout that their partners often sell their flights too, sometimes for less. If you’re going on popular long-haul routes this can be a way to save.

Consumer Clinic

By Jonathan Vernon-Smith

Knowing Your Consumer Rights I am becoming increasingly fed up with dealing with retailers right across Beds, Bucks and beyond who either don’t familiarise themselves with consumer law, or who deliberately attempt to pull the wool over their customer’s eyes. That makes it so important that we all understand the law as consumers. That way, when a retailer talks rubbish, we spot it straight away.

You can listen to The JVS Show every weekday morning from 9am on BBC Three Counties Radio

I thought this month I would take the opportunity to explain ‘Statutory Rights’. You may have seen on a receipt or contract ‘This does not affect your statutory rights’. This means that anything the retailer has offered you (in terms of returns policy etc) does not change the things you’re entitled to by law.

amount of time. I would suggest a minimum of 5 years’ worth of ‘reasonable use’ before it blows up. If it develops a manufacturing fault at any time during that period, the retailer IS LIABLE! Any attempt to fob you off, should be met with a firm, but polite explanation of your consumer rights.

When you purchase any brand new goods or services in the UK you are protected by your ‘statutory rights’ (sale of goods act 1979).

Bear in mind, the retailer is at liberty to take into account usage you’ve had from a product before it breaks though. For example, if your 4 year old fridge blows up, the retailer could offer to replace it, but will ask for a contribution from you for the 4 years use you had from the previous model.

All Goods Must Be: a)

Fit for purpose

b) Of ‘reasonable’ quality (based on the cost) c)

Last for a reasonable amount of time (based on the cost)

Therefore, if you buy (for example) a fridge for £300, it should last for a ‘reasonable’ 20

For the first 6 months after purchase, it’s up to the retailer to prove that the fault with the item is NOT their responsibility. After the first 6 months it’s your responsibility. Therefore, my advice when dealing with an obstructive retailer, is to

obtain an independent report to confirm that the product has a manufacturing fault, then ask the retailer to not only fix the problem, but also reimburse you for the cost of the report. It is also worth noting that when you first purchase an item, during the first 4 weeks you are entitled to return faulty goods and get a full refund. After this period of time, generally you will have to permit the retailer an opportunity to repair the item if they so wish. So, remember next time the manager of a shop says ‘oh sorry, there’s nothing we can do I’m afraid’. Tell them you understand your statutory rights and if they still fail to help, then call my team on 01582 637450 and I’ll have a little ‘word’ for you!

At Home In The Garden As a designer we are often required to work on properties around the home counties that have significant traditional or period features. For the homeowner they often assume that because they want to keep elements of those features they must blend the interior to feature a recreation style of when the property is dated from, this can then mean you can end up with overfussy, crowded, dark and heavily patterned furnishings. Using the work “Contemporary” and “Traditional” within the same sentence can often strike panic onto the faces of the clients as they cannot see how this would work together.

How to blend

contemporary style with

Period Features

The trick is to not try to go to far one way or the other. Pick some subtle traditional features and highlight these, for example details like coving/ cornice, decorative door handles, original flooring. These all work surprisingly well with very minimalist contemporary furniture. The clean lines of modern design highlight intricate details, show up grains for original wood and sit uncluttered next to very grand and exuberant items. I was asked to work on a “Mock Tudor” style property, which is only actually around 20 years old, but build in a fashion that leaves lower ceiling heights, lots of dark timbers and difficult room proportions. The clients wanted a modern comfy lounge/snug but have a inglenook style fireplace which dominated the room. They couldn’t see how they could get that clean edge design they had in previous homes. We added a deco inspired coving as a traditional coving would have been too deep for the ceiling, balanced the room by blocking up one of the two entrances, and inlaid a simple patterned carpet into a rustic wood floor. Picking out a pop of colour and blending the TV into a media wall in dark textures similar to the fireplace meant that the TV didn’t dominate as a focal point, and the fireplace still remained a feature, but with other darker aspects to the room it no longer dominated the room. When it comes to property like this getting the blend right is simply down the planning, plan out what you would like to do and see if it works. Try some mood boards, thereare a few great apps like Morpholio Board, Olioboard and HomeStyle that you can download to help.

In The Garden

Watering... without the guilt Who remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks. But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon.

But gardens need water to survive

so what can we do?

Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant. A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size. You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres! With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free. 28

However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system. Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives. Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently. Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further. A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth! By Rachel Leverton

In The Garden At last the summer months have arrived although the recent weather could easily be mistaken for April. The extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on a huge burst of growth. Herbaceous borders are reaching their early summer peak and the kitchen garden is becoming productive.

Jobs To Be Getting On With • Prune back spring flowering shrubs and cut back/ clean and dived spring flowering perennials. • If you haven’t done so yet plant out summer bedding into borders, containers and hanging baskets. • Remember to feed your containers and hanging baskets weekly with a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro or Tomorite. Dead-head spent blooms regularly. • Trim lavender plants now, cutting off any old flower heads and about 2.5cm (1 inch) of the current year's growth. • Pinch out the side shoots of tomatoes and tie in as required. • Stake border perennial varieties that are tall growing and that tend to flop over. • Check roses for mildew, aphid, black-spot or other insect or disease problems and if they appear, take steps to control them straight away. • Begin to cut the grass regularly and fill in any bare spots by slightly loosening the surface of the soil and sow a good quality lawn seed over the area evenly. • Keep on top of weeds by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. • Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still remaining.

Plants for Dry Spaces Alliums - the huge ones look great Cistus - Rock Rose Euphorbia - my favourite, very architectural Helianthemum - Sun Rose Lavender - plant near patios for the fragrance Santolina Sedum - almost indestructible! Senecio - the sunshine plant Thyme 30

A Beginners Guide To.. Organic Gardening

Imagine a garden that’s in harmony with nature, where flowers, fruit & vegetables are grown using only natural methods and where the gardener uses plants and creates habitats which encourage and support the gardens wildlife. This garden is alive with a myriad of intertwined natural food chains and here lies the essence of Organic Gardening, a form of gardening that encourages and harnesses the ways of nature, creang a balanced, healthy and sustainable environment, and one that’s great for children to play in and learn in.

How to get started:

• Stop using fastacng chemical ferlisers that force soft, watery plant growth so vulnerable to pests. Stop using chemical pescide which often kills beneficial insects. • Start using organic plant food such as Fish, Blood and Bone, or pelleted poultry manures. • Collect rain water and use it for irrigaon. • Use plants like Verbena sp. and pot marigolds (Calendula) to aract beneficial insects like Ladybirds, Lacewings and Hoverflies. An old upturned clay flowerpot makes a good home for Ground Beetles. Hang bird feeders to aract garden birds and even the smallest pond can support frogs and toads. All these help to control garden pests. • Set up a composng system to recycle plant waste into garden compost. Spread over the soil (mulching) or dug in, it encourages soil life, improves soil structure and grows stronger healthier plants, more able to resist garden pests and disease. Brows & Lashes

I was born with my dad’s eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and I’m resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was…

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or overgroomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed specimens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options! Most of us ladies – and the odd gent too – need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and threading methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks. A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consultation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweezing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry! 36

With your brows looking beautiful brows it’s time to move on to the eyelashes. There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually working! My daughter’s naturally long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a new mascara. But what else is on offer? Tinting is an option if your lashes are particularly fair, and it’s not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friend’s son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up. Finally, how about having eyelash extensions? This is one of the UK’s fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

St. Mary’s Carnival 4th July in Edlesborough

The SEA!

I

t is carnival time again for the villages of Edlesborough, Eaton Bray, Northall and Dagnall on the 4th July from 12 noon to 5pm. This year THE SEA comes to St. Mary’s carnival on Edlesborough Green as the theme for decorating floats and houses on the procession route. In the past 20 years the carnival has raised over two hundred thousand pounds for local charities, organisations and repairs to the historic church in Eaton Bray. This year the primary charities are “Joss Searchlight” children’s cancer support and “Medical Detection Dogs”. The procession leaves from The Orchards in Eaton Bray at 12:30pm led by the Carnival Queen and Princess with their Attendants and accompanied marching bands, decorated floats, majorettes, vintage vehicles and a whole range of local nutters, all dressed to the theme of THE SEA. The convoy arrives at Edlesborough Green about 45 minutes later when the afternoon’s entertainment gets underway. The official opening time on Edlesborough green is 12 noon but BBQ food will be available from 10am or earlier with many stall and rides open for business from 11am. So if you fancy a breakfast roll and a preview of some of the rides... get there early! New attractions this year include a supervised multi-

user 7.5m Climbing Wall (suitable for ALL ages and abilities) and a Tai Chi demonstrations and group tuition. Carnival favourites will also be there; the famous Magic Dave children’s entertainer, Birds of Bray wild bird display, Will Lee live chainsaw wood carving, the family dog show with truly unmissable sausage race (be there well before the 12 noon start if you have a pooch to enter!) and the classic vehicles display to name but a few. Around the carnival site will be in excess of 120 charity and independent stalls offering food, games, competitions, raffles; from plant stalls to hook the duck and barbeques to tennis coaching. Look out for St. Mary’s charity BBQ serving locally sourced burgers, Bunker’s sausages and kebabs from Hines the village butcher as well as chorizo, saveloy and bacon and egg rolls. The fun fair has many attractions this year; the “big” Ferris wheel, the rotating wall of death, roundabouts for all ages and a whole array of huge inflatable castles, slides and assault courses. There really is something for everyone! Come and join us and SEA how much fun is to be had at one of the biggest independent village carnivals in the country from mid-day at Edlesborough Green. You can’t miss it; it’s the big green patch in the middle of the village!

Statistics

And The General Election

T

here is a most interesting book, its been in print for many years and goes into the methods of making the use of statistics, which are based on facts, and how you can turn such facts into believable lies. The title of the book 'How To Lie With Statistics'. A book one supposes that is currently in use on a daily basis. There is no doubt some of the politicians are quite happy about the facts they give to the general public to try and secure a first past the post win for their beliefs. They are telling the truth as quoted in the statistical analysis, but do not cover the end result of such a statistic. I have a copy of the book 'How To Lie With Statistics' and one

By Mike Newman

of the best illustrations to prove the point is 'the Gee-Whiz Graph'. All one does is turn the graph upside down, so the troughs become the peaks and vice versa. Nobody reads the figures on the first glance. All one notes is a company on the rise rather than one about to go into administration. Let us take an instance we meet up with on a daily basis. Employment is on the rise. So it is, statistics prove it, the out of work numbers in the one million mark. But lets look at those on zero hours jobs or those who work four jobs on a part time basis to try to put food on the table and heat into the house. That means the total of four jobs held by one person

- a real treat for the statistics expert, the figures are true, but the outcome of full employment is not. So many thousands of houses have been insulated, a good statistic, but where does the heat come from to heat the interiors? The present Chancellor tells us in his budget that winter fuel allowances will come under the welfare cap as does cold weather payments. One could go on forever giving examples, the spokespersons tell the truth of one side of the equation and not the other, not their fault, they work to a cleverly crafted script. Whatever happened at the general election this May, statistics would have had a lot to do with it. Mark my words.

Are You A Telecare Customer? Read On... The Dunstable Senior Citizens, with the help of our MP Andrew Selous, have been dealing with Central Bedfordshire Council Social Services Department reference - who should pay VAT and who should not. A point we made was, had they any means of knowing whether those who presently paid VAT for Telecare services had not - over a period of time - either been issued with "a blue badge' or had become victims of any complaint of a medical nature that would meet the requirements of not having to pay VAT?

The answer to this question from the Director Of Social Care, Health & Housing was, quote - "Unfortunately the council is unable to know if the customers medical state has changed, consequently it is the responsibility of the customer to inform the council of any such changes" - unquote. Any readers who use Telecare and this that their sate of health meets the requirements of NIL Vat, or now have a blue badge, they should contact Central Bedfordshire Council Social Services with the relevant information.

Mike Newman is a member of The Dunstable And District Senior Citizens Club. If you have a view on any of the issues raised why not attend one of their monthly meetings, held on the last Thursday of the month at St Marys Catholic Social Club, West St., Dunstable. 46

Microchip Your Pet From April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. But what exactly is a microchip? Microchipping seeks to aid reuniting lost or stolen pets with their owners with their pets. It should be used in conjunction with the usual tag and collar. The computer microchip contains a unique identity number and is housed in a type of glass which is compatible with living tissue. The whole thing is about the size of a grain of rice. A special syringe and needle are used to implant the chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. The insertion isn’t painful and a check will be made using a handheld device immediately afterwards to ensure that the chip’s data is readable. The code and owners details are then stored on a national database. It is important to update your details on the database if you move. Many pets are suitable for microchipping including dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. Charities such as the Dogs Trust are so passionate about its importance that they offer it for free at their rehoming centres and run chipping roadshow events throughout the year. Vets and other organisations charge for microchipping, and costs will vary depending on the size of your pet and where you live. 48

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky Looking Up! June and July 2015 See The International Space Station From Bedfordshire: The first two weeks of June sees the

International Space Station (ISS) pass over Bedfordshire in the evening sky. Look for a solid bright white light moving at an almost constant speed across the sky roughly west to east. Timings vary from night to night, so keep your eyes peeled between 9:45pm and midnight. On some evenings you might get to see the ISS a second time, about 90 minutes after its first passage.

Hunt Down Electric Blue Clouds At The Edge Of Space:

Late summer evenings are a great time to hunt down noctilucent clouds (NLCs). These eerie electric blue strands of cirrus-like cloud sometimes appear draped over the northern horizon after dark. Sunlight reflecting off tiny particles of frozen meteor dust in Earth’s upper atmosphere are thought to cause these

strange night-shining clouds. Look out for them in the sky towards your north between 11pm and 2am.

Discover How Saturn Looks In A Telescope:

Seeing Saturn for the first time in a telescope is an unforgettable experience. This June and July the ringed planet is perfectly placed for evening viewing near the constellation of Scorpio. Look for it low down towards the south near a curved line of three dimmer white stars. To the naked eye Saturn appears as a bright yellow ‘star’. A small telescope is all that is needed to reveal the planet’s ring system. Image: Noctilucent Cloud Display by Jan Erik Paulsen
