Get Your Ho, Ho, Ho On And Santa Run For Little Harry The 5 year old sister of a boy who died at a popular Luton hospice is calling on the people of the town to paint Wardown Park a sea of red and support Luton’s Santa Run on 11 December 2016. Ella Russell’s brother, Harry, died aged 3 at Keech Hospice Care in November 2015. Ella’s now asking everyone to get their Santa suit on. “It’s a magical thing. I love seeing all the Santas having fun as they run and walk around the course. Last year, just after Harry died, me, Mummy and Daddy went to watch all the Santa’s. It was brilliant! I’m doing it this year to remember my little brother.” In his short life, Harry had to cope with both physical and mental disabilities including hearing and vision loss, epilepsy, breathing problems and being fed through a tube. His mum, Julie said Harry taught their family how to live in the moment. “Our handsome Superhero Harry had the most beautiful soul and smile,” said Julie. “He gave the most amazing cuddles and you’d never want to let go. Harry taught us, and Keech always showed us, how to make every moment count. We feel the Santa Run is the perfect positive event not only to remember Harry, but to raise precious funds and awareness for our local children’s hospice. “With millions of rooftops to reach in just one night, Santa must be quick on his feet. But, for us, Keech’s Santa Run will quite literally be a walk in the park – running is a no no! We're all looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere, celebrating Harry’s life and having fun with all the other Santas. As a charity, Keech Hospice Care relies on 70% of its funding to come from its community for its survival. “It took us a considerable time to accept Harry’s disabilities and not feel bitter and angry,” said Harry’s Dad, Mark. The most significant moment in Harry’s short life, and certainly for us as a family, was when Keech came into it.

6

www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

It was a huge turning point. Hospice care is not just about death, it‘s very much about living and Keech made Harry’s final year very much about life and gave us so much support. “I remember asking the doctor when we first arrived at Keech how long as a family we could be looked after by the charity. Doctor Justin replied we had got Keech Hospice Care for the duration of Harry’s life and however many years we needed it for afterwards. I just thought that’s a massive commitment from Keech to our family. Doctor Justin was so sincere when he said it and I was blown away. This massive weight as a Dad just came off my shoulders. “I never thought I’d need my local children’s hospice but I don’t know where we’d be now if we hadn’t had it. So, Luton, please come and give Santa a run for his money at Keech Hospice Care’s 5km sponsored Santa Run on Sunday 11 December at Wardown Park.” Kick start the countdown to Christmas by signing up for Keech’s Santa Run at www.keech.org.uk/santarun or call 01582 707940. Entry is just £15 for adults and includes a Santa costume to keep, finishers medal and gift. Under 16's is £5 and includes festive headwear, and family entry for two adults and three children is £40. For further information contact Lorna Chinnock on 01582 497874 or at lchinnock@keech.org.uk.

New Partnership To Tackle Homelessness

Signposts Luton and Luton Community Housing are planning to co-ordinate their services to maximise the help they provide to homeless people within these communities. The two organisations at the forefront of providing accommodation for homeless people and those in insecure or poor quality housing, across Luton and Bedfordshire. Signposts CEO Kevin Porter says “The number who find themselves without access to secure accommodation is increasing on a daily basis and the financial resources to meet these challenges are reducing annually. Within this environment it has become essential for organisations such as ours to look at new and innovative ways to deliver services to meet this increasing demand”. It is with all this in mind that Luton Community Housing and Signposts Luton are entering into formal discussions with the aim of providing better and more efficient services. Lynda Rees, CEO of LCH: “There is huge pressure on the local housing market where overcrowding and poor quality accommodation is common - yet at the same time private sector rents have risen by at least 15% this year. Both organisations already work hard to help those who are homeless or in low paid employment, but this group are increasingly struggling to find suitable affordable accommodation. We are looking for innovative ways to strengthen our organisations so we can help more people than ever before.

Luton Loos Awarded Platinum The Mall Luton has been awarded Platinum Status in the Loo of the Year Awards 2016. Following a refurbishment of the Bute Street toilets, the new loos have been awarded a Platinum rating by inspectors – the highest award possible – in the Loo of the Year Awards search to find the best ‘away from home’ toilets in the UK. The refurbishment works have seen The Mall Luton double the baby changing and feeding areas, with two additional changing stations, as well as adding pull down baby change stations to two of the disabled toilets. There are also two cubicles in the ladies and one in the gents that will be big enough to facilitate buggies. Lavinia Douglass, Marketing Manager for The Mall Luton, said: “The Mall is honoured to have been awarded Platinum Status for our new Bute Street Toilets. Our staff work hard to ensure the toilets are in top condition at all times and it’s great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.” The Loo of the Year Awards and associated Attendant of the Year Awards for cleaning staff have been identifying the best in Britain since 1987 and are recognised as standard setters for all those who provide ‘away from home’ facilities for staff, customers and visitors. Every entrant received an unannounced visit from an authorised Loo of the Year Awards Inspector and was assessed against 100 judging criteria – including signing and décor, fixtures and fittings and overall standards of cleanliness and management. Every loo received a grading ranging from Bronze to Platinum and Gold and Platinum winners are short listed for one of a number of National Awards covering England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Dunstable, Luton & surrounding areas areas and manager Tom Bliss

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tom a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Home Made Christmas Get creative in the kitchen this Christmas

Easy Mulled Wine Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind 1 large piece lemon rind 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar

Don't bother with expensive wine, a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference!

Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don’t bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you’d like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the fireside.

Brownies In A100Jar g chocolate chips

1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking powder 95 g plain flour 35 g cocoa 75 g plain flour 135 g brown sugar 150 g sugar

Layer the dry ingredients in a one litre jar, following the order above, from top, starting with the salt, baking powder and flour. Press each layer down before adding the next (wipe the inside of the jar after adding the cocoa). The amounts given should exactly fill a one litre jar. Add ribbon to decorate and remember to include a tag with the instructions.

Heat the oven to 180ยบC fan/Gas Mark 5. Line two baking sheets with nonstick baking paper. Sift the plain flour, mix in the bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger. Rub in butter with your fingers until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Then add the brown sugar, golden syrup and beaten egg. Mix with your hand to form a ball. Allow to rest for five minutes while you lightly crush the boiled sweets with the rolling pin. Flour your work surface and the rolling pin, and roll out the dough to the thickness of a pound coin. of the biscuit. Place on the lined baking sheet. Put a crushed boiled sweet in each little hole. If you want to hang the biscuits on the Christmas tree, use a straw to make a little hole near the top. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden. Leave to cool and harden on the baking sheets because they will be soft to begin with, and the melted sweets very hot. When cold and solid, thread ribbon through the little holes and tie.

an ideal homemade Christmas gift

200ml double cream 200g good-quality dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids) 200g desiccated coconut

Pour the cream into a saucepan and bring just up to the boil. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour over the boiling cream, then stir until the chocolate and cream are well blended and smooth. Cool, then set aside in the fridge until the mixture is solid, about 2 hrs. Scoop out teaspoons of the mixture and roll into small walnut-size balls with your hands. Sprinkle the coconut onto a plate and roll the truffle in the coconut until evenly covered. Will keep in a cool place for 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN Grove Theatre, Dunstable From: Thursday 8th December 2016 Until: Monday 2nd January 2017 Tickets: Start from £13 Box Office: 01582 60 20 80 (opt 7) Book Online: www.grovetheatre.co.uk Fly away to the colourful heights of Peking, China with this year’s spectacular pantomime Aladdin at the Grove Theatre, Dunstable! That’s right, panto season is fast approaching. Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is! Make this season one to remember with the enchanting tale of an honest peasant boy, Aladdin, who plans to build a bigger and better life with the help of a magic genie. But, will Aladdin escape the evil clutch of the dastardly Abanazar? Will Aladdin win Princess Jasmine’s heart? Soap villain of the decade Brian Capron, who played the evil Richard Hillman in Coronation Street, will take on another wicked act as Abanazar in this year’s panto. As well as regular appearances on TV, Brian is also established in various theatre roles. In pantomime Brian has enlivened the devilish characters as a seasoned baddie and has the perfect qualities to bring to life the true baddie, Abanazar in Aladdin. From villain to funny man, CBBC presenter Ed Petrie will be Wishee Washee in this year’s Aladdin. A firm favourite with family audiences, Ed has spent ten years on television establishing himself as a comedic actor. Initially starting on CBBC as a continuity presenter, Ed quickly landed his own shows with sidekicks Oucho T. Cactus and CBBC dogs Hacker and Dodge, before starting his hugely popular current shows, Marrying Mum And Dad and All Over

The Place for the channel. Ed is set to bring energy and fun to the role of Wishee Washee! The magic of panto just keeps giving as the panto dame Widow Twankey and the Genie of the Lamp will be played by Kieran and Sarah of Britain’s Got Talent fame, respectively. In 2014, Kieran and Sarah’s remarkable performances of popular opera hits got them all the way to the semi-finals of the ITV programme. Now they spend most of the year performing in venues around the country and on cruise ships all over the world. On stage, they have appeared in numerous pantomimes including Robin Hood And The Babes In The Wood in Kent, and the Easter pantomime of Alice in Wonderland in Cairo, Egypt. Bringing panto nearer to home, Aladdin will be played by local actor, singer-songwriter and guitarist Joe Ashman. Joe appeared at the Grove Theatre ten years ago, playing John in the theatre’s first pantomime, Peter Pan, alongside Brian Blessed. He has since seen success in musical theatre at London's Palladium in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound Of Music, in theatre including The Cryptogram at the Donmar Warehouse and 2,000 Feet Away at the Bush Theatre, as well as on screen as a guest lead in the 2013 New Year’s Eve episode of Casualty on BBC 1. Joe is thrilled to be back at the Grove Theatre this year, playing the title role in their 10th anniversary panto!

We’ve got a family ticket (2 adults & 2 Children) for Aladdin on Tuesday 20th December to give away! To be in with a chance of winning tell us - Which local actor will be playing Aladdin? Spot the Space Station (or Santa) over Bedfordshire:

The International Space Station (ISS) returns to our evening sky in the run up to Christmas this year. Look for a bright white light moving steadily across the sky on a roughly west to east or south-east trajectory. The space station does not flash or make a noise, but silently sails 250 miles above us at 17500mph. Best times to spot the ISS are from 6 December until 20 December. It’ll be visible for about 8 minutes each evening between 4:30pm and 6pm. Exact timings can be found online.

Venus Emerges as the Evening Star: Not

Out and about at 6:30am this winter? Look high to your south-east and you’ll spot Jupiter. It is the biggest planet in our solar system and is the brightest star-like object in the pre-dawn sky. You might spot another bright star below Jupiter. This is Spica - one of the bluest stars in the sky. By Seb Jay Image Credit: NASA

to be confused with the space station Venus begins its ascent to prominence in December. An hour after sundown look low to the southwest and you’ll spot a piercing bright white light in the fading twilight. Above and to the left of Venus look out for a dimmer red coloured ‘star’. This is Mars. On 2 January a thin crescent moon sits between both planets making for a spectacular view.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

Christmas

Don’t hate me, I know the festivities are just beginning, but it’s time to prepare not celebrate, as Christmas 2017 will be here @moneysavingexpert Now I hate tinsel and Jingle Bells before December as much as the next man, but many festive savings are only possible if you do them early. This isn’t a trivial message. I’m fed up of every January people telling me they’re skint and when I ask why? they reply, “Christmas of course.” Well I can tell you exclusively here, Christmas will be on 25th December next year, so it’s not an unexpected event - there is plenty of time to plan in advance to prevent problems. So here are my seven key things you should do that’ll save stressing over festivities to come. I’ve focused on Christmas, but the same techniques work for Chanukah, Eid, and Kwanzaa too.

Agree To Not Give Unnecessary Presents Gifts for kids, grandchildren or your spouse are fine. Yet it’s time to stop the ever growing list of people we buy for even when we’ve no idea what they want, know we’ll end up buying tat that’ll never be used, and add heaps of pressure on ourselves to do so. I’ve been campaigning to end unnecessary gifts for six years, and more and more people are doing it. Yet it involves agreeing a pact not to buy each other. Even the joy of giving can be selfish if it obligates someone who can’t afford it to buy back. Julia tweeted me a couple of weeks ago:

24 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

before you know it! “@MartinSLewis, finally took your advice and told family I can’t afford Xmas presents. What a weight off my mind. Thank you.” So make an agreement with friends and family not to buy, or to cap the cost, only give homemade or even to give to charity instead. See my full ‘why Christmas presents are bad’ explanation at www.mse.me/BanChristmas.

Book Your Train Tickets 12 Weeks In Advance Wherever you’re planning on spending the festive season, if you need to travel by train, book your tickets 12 weeks in advance. That’s when most cheap advance tickets launch, so you get maximum availability. So September/October is the perfect time to be buying tickets if you’re planning on visiting friends and family for Christmas and New Year.

Small Savings Make Merry Say you start in October, that’s roughly 90 days, 75 working days and 13 weeks left till Christmas. So, if you buy a £2 coffee every work day, just give it up, put the cash in a Christmas kitty instead and you’ll have £150 by the big day. I’m not telling you to do this, it’s about deciding priorities. If that’s cash you need for Christmas, are you willing to make the sacrifice? If you start saving even earlier think of the cash you could save.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

Christmas come, it’ll spread the cost. Save what you can and if you’re saying you can’t afford that, then I’m afraid you’ll need to go cold turkey. Christmas is just one day, it’s not worth overspending and ruining your New Year.

Set Up A Christmas Cupboard

Earn 5% Cashback On Your Christmas Shopping If you’re going to be spending for Christmas, you might as well do it on a card that pays you every time you spend on it. The no annual-fee www.americanexpress.com Platinum Everyday credit card pays you 5% cashback on your first three months’ spending (maximum £100), so get it now and you get the big cashback during the high spend pre-Christmas period. It then follows with up to 1% after. The cashback is paid after a year, so you’ll get it in time to help next Christmas, though there’s a minimum £3,000 spend to get it. That sounds a lot, but do all your normal spending on it as it pays you and you’ll be fine. Of course, only do this if you’ve a direct debit to repay it IN FULL each month, or you’ll be charged 22.9% rep APR, which kills the gain.

Not Saved For It? Start early - Again, even if you only start in October you can split the cost over three pay days. A typical family Christmas costs around £600-£800 - a huge amount from one month’s salary alone. But if you hold back some cash in the months leading up to the big day it will leave you comfortable after the festivities are over. For example, if you put £200 aside from your October and November in-

Become a tactical shopper. Work out now what necessary gifts you need to buy, and then if you spot a bargain, either in the sales or when there’s a code, voucher or discount that makes it cheaper you can pounce on it . Get my weekly email at www.mse.me/tips for some of the latest discouts and offers. Even better, as is part of many ‘Money Savers’ Christmas arsenal, once you buy a present, bag it, wrap it, and pop it in a Christmas cupboard, another job out of the way allowing you to relax and enjoy the festivities.

Not Used It Since Last Christmas? Flog It! Walk around the house and examine everything. The lead up to Christmas is a great time for your annual personal stock clearance. Many old items can be worth serious cash so if you’ve not used things for a year, whether toys, prams, old coffee makers, mobile phones, gadgets, or even clothes, why not sell them? You could boost your finances as well as make some room for all of the new toys, gifts and goodies you and the kids receive. EBay and car boot sales aren’t your only options either. Facebook now has a lot of good local sales groups which provide an even easier way to sell. There are also lots of recycling sites that will pay you for old mobiles and gadgets – just make sure you do your research first to find the one that’ll give you the most. TOYOTA PRIUS Business Edition Plus

T

here's clean and then there's clean. Our house is clean, because my wife wears out Dysons with monotonous regularity keeping it that way. She is to the adult world what the Toyota Prius is to the automotive environment. One of the world's cleanest people has been re-acquainted with one of the world’s cleanest family cars. An inauspicious occasion, I admit, because the former was totally unaware of the latter's credentials until I pointed them out. Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive gives the electric motor more of a role to play than some other hybrids which rely on the petrol engine to produce peak performance with the electric unit of secondary importance. First launched back in 1997, it offered motorists nearly 66mpg on the combined cycle, so while the initial purchase price was on the high side you didn’t have to pay for its environmental consciousness at the pumps. Fast forward 19 years to the latest version to carry the badge and you’ll be interested to note that the combined figure now sits just above 94mpg – quite a step forward in efficiency. The high voltage hybrid battery used here is now more compact and has better durability and charging performance. The initial purchase price here is £26,490 for the Business Edition Plus model sampled.

£26,490 1798cc four cylinder 16v DOHC with VVT-I, plus 650 volt 71bhp electric motor 97bhp, 142Nm engine, 71bhp, 163Nm electric motor Electric CVT transmission Top speed 112mph, 0-62mph 10.4secs Fuel – urban 97.4, extra urban 91.1, combined 94.1 CO2 70g/km

Starting up the Prius is a bit like waiting for the penny to drop with a dumb chum. Long pause, no sound. You press the power button and the digital display tells you the car is ready for action. But it's so quiet you could hear that penny drop. Off with the foot operated parking brake and all is still quiet. Only ticking I can hear is my brain. And then, as you glide forward, there's a sudden subdued revving from beneath the bonnet as the clever bits decide electric power isn't enough to get you moving at any real pace and the 1.8 litre engine joins in. Interestingly the electric motor is more powerful than a fair few internal combustion engines, and, with 163Nm available instantly from zero mph, the Prius has impetus aplenty. It is refreshingly swift when needed. A cross country run to Worcestershire was accomplished in a quicker time than I’d anticipated while still returning good economy, in the order of 67mpg. The only drawback is a slightly uninvolved feeling as its CVT transmission does its job quietly and efficiently on the longer stretches of road but being a comfortable mode of transport means you get out at the other end in a fairly relaxed frame of mind. There’s more than enough room inside to cram in five adults without them feeling uncomfortable, and while you can induce a bit of body

26 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

roll with some spirited driving it has a reassuring surefooted feel to it. In fact it’s a fair improvement over previous versions as it’s built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture Platform, which has a 25mm lower centre of gravity than before and thus has better body control. Behind the wheel, you’ll find all the info you need to the left of your line of sight, in a centrally located binnacle atop the dash. Digital speedo, trip computer, various coloured alerts for various functions and a graphic showing how eco friendly you’re being dominate the display, while below it is a decent sized seven inch touch screen for your sat nav, radio etc. Driving the Prius is a bit like having your own personal instructor alongside you, because every time you stop it tells you on its display how well you have been driving. Can be quite a sobering message, and occasionally quite an uplifting one too! It has a very neat interior, if a bit minimal, but there are a couple of creamy white areas to brighten up the otherwise sombre interior that has a lot of piano black spread around. It has the smallest knob my grandson says he’s ever seen in a car to control your gear function. Drive, reverse, neutral, all selected with the merest of flicks.
