The Town At The Crossroads - Part XVI

lizabeth inherited a confused and demoralised kingdom but at the end of her reign 45 years later, England had once again become the dominant European power. But it had not been an easy road: religious bitterness continued to erupt and theological dispute ranged back and forth relentlessly. However, Elizabeth was a stated Protestant (therby earning Rome’s excommunication of the Church of England) and she was determined that England should remain Protestant; especially following Queen Mary’s strenuous, and barbaric return to catholicism and to Rome. But she (Elizabeth) realised that many people were still devoted to Catholic teachings and that there was no point in deliberately setting out to destroy them. Consequently, she introduced a modicom of leniency towards Catholics in that they were allowed to follow their own private devotions. But they had a price to pay for their digression from the established religion in that everyone was expected to attend church; and if they didn’t have a good excuse for not doing so, they were fined heavily. Also Catholic services were banned and serious punishment meted out for breaking this law. There were, however, still people who chose to run the gauntlet of discovery and who hid a priest in some secret corner of their house if the “religious police” came a-calling; ie the infamous “priest holes” still found in some older country homes. Even though Catholics had a tough time, it would have been much tougher had hard line

Protestants had their way. It is ironic that during Edward’s reign, examples of catholicism were routinely smashed; only to be resurrected during Mary’s reign; and then followed, yet again, by gangs of marauding Protestants on the Catholic warpath once more - Northern Ireland, here we come. Such conflicting madness in the name of an all forgiving God beggars comprehension. For much of her reign, Elizabeth had to walk this terrible tightrope. But this she did with remakable skill, intelligence and an iron will so that, gradually, protestantism gained the upper hand and, at her death in 1603, England was undeniably Protestant (but with an unhappy Catholic minority). For many years, she was urged to marry - both for political and/ or dynastic reasons - but she resisted all such implorings saying that she was married to England and would remain a Virgin Queen. There is, however, much scurrilous debate surrounding the security of her virginity!! England’s great political rival, Spain, was aided and abetted by Scotland where there was a rival to Elizabeth’s throne in the form of her Catholic cousin Mary, Queen of Scots (brought up in France!). Numerous Catholic plots were hatched - but nipped in the bud - and Mary later embarked upon a disastrous marriage resulting in her having to escape into Elizabeth’s tender mercy. What irony! Elizabeth was extremely wary and Mary was imprisoned in the Tower and later - after much soul searching and remorse - executed in 1587. This event stifled

further attempts by Catholics to force England’s return to Rome. But not for long: the religious pot was never far off the boil. (At this point, it is easy to become confused over which Queen Mary is which: Mary, Queen of Scots was Elizabeth’s cousin whereas Queen Mary was her half sister and the daughter of Henry 8th and Catherine of Aragon and who, like Elizabeth, was of direct Tudor descent. So the crown passed from Henry to Edward to Mary to Elizabeth; with Mary, Queen of Scots not of this line). Perhaps Elizabeth is best remembered for the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 when the Spanish King Philip 2nd formerly married to Queen Mary - decided to launch a massive naval attack against Dutch and English Protestants in order to force a return to catholicism. But the cumbersome Spanish galleons wallowing in the heavy seas were no match for the smaller, lighter English men-o-war and fireships. The remnant Spanish were forced to retreat around the western coasts of Ireland and Scotland resulting in many further wrecks such that from an original 130 ships, only 67 limped home. So much for the indomitable Spanish Armada! The defeat of Spain’s supposedly invincible navy by sea captains such as Sir Francis Drake and John Hawkins made England top dog in Europe once more; a position she held for many years. Consequently, Elizabeth’s reign is often referred to as “The Golden Age” during which England underwent a long period of unparalleled prosperity and discovery.

The Town At The Crossroads - Part XVI As a child, in and out of favour, Elizabeth spent much of her time at Hatfield House and Ashridge when not welcome at Court; and she regarded Hatfield as her “emotional home” during the reigns of both Edward and Mary. But later, as monarch, she felt obliged to travel the country in order to see and to be seen. In these travels, she chose not to stay at inns but at the private houses of her more affluent subjects. What is more, she expected that no expense should be spared; nothing but the very best was to be the order of the day. Since her entourage could easily exceed a hundred, a visit from Elizabeth could cost an arm and a leg. And, to make things even worse, she also expected some form of lavish gift - in return for which she might bestow a knighthood or peerage. Although she journeyed through, and visited Dunstable on a few occasions as Queen, she never actually stayed in the town. But, even so, a procession such as that accompanying the monarch was a very exciting spectacle indeed. The party, in all its pomp and glory, would stop at the town boundary (by Half Moon Lane) and be welcomed by town dignitaries and offered gifts in the hope of something in return - not always forthcoming in Elizabeth’s case! The procession would then parade through the town under a guard of honour accompanied by countless jugglers, musicians, itinerant entertainers (and beggars and pick pockets) each hoping to gain a few pennies. Elizabeth visited Toddington Manor twice and Woburn Abbey once, each time causing total panic and disruption. Henry Cheney at Toddington had a brand new stately home purposely built (but not completed) for her first visit in 1563 - and for which he was knighted. After the building had been finished, her second visit in 1576 earned him a peerage. Who says that buying peerages is something new?! The visit to Woburn came at very short notice indeed and John Russell, the 1st Earl of Bedford, had to move very quickly in order to get the Abbey into a state fit for royalty. Household decorations and equipment were rushed from London and the landed gentry of Beds, Bucks and Herts dragooned into helping out. It was all hands to the pumps yet, miraculously, the Queen expressed delight with her accommodation! But towards the end of her life - and the end of the Tudor dynasty - when it was obvious that she was dying (of pneumonia - but also of lead poisoning because of the horrible white stuff she smeared all over her face), she refused to name

her successor. This set the religious pot boiling once again and, eventually, James 6th of Scotland was invited to become James 1st of England and to unite the thrones of England and Scotland. James, son of Mary, Queen of Scots (a devout Catholic) was, in complete contrast, a radical Protestant who brought in harsh anti-Catholic laws much to the dismay of those who had hoped that their particular blue skies were just around the corner. As a result, the earlier, dark days returned and ultimately led to the sorry story of the Gunpowder Plot when militant Catholics were foiled in their attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Will religious bigotry never end?

Look out towards the eastern horizon mid-evening this Christmas and you’ll see what looks like a bright star in the sky. At first glance it is indeed a star with royal beauty bright. Yet this is no star at all, but the largest planet in our solar system – the planet Jupiter. 10x50 binoculars are all you’ll need to resolve this bright beacon into a planetary disc. In a telescope we get a high-impact view with Jupiter’s alternating dark bands and light zones stealing the show.

Throughout early winter Orion hangs in the sky towards the south-east. It is easy to find with its three bright stars making up Orion’s Belt. Below the belt on the left-hand side is a fainter line of stars dropping down towards the horizon. This is Orion’s Sword. Embedded within the sword is the Orion Nebula – a spectacular stellar nursery where new stars are being born. Claiming Compensation & Out Of Pocket Expenses I HATE compensation! There, I said it! I hate it! In fact, I have made it my mission during the last 13 years that I’ve been presenting a consumer show on the radio, to put people off making such claims. If this shocks you then please read this article through to the end and you may understand my thinking. You can listen to The JVS Show every weekday morning from 9am on BBC Three Counties Radio

To me, compensation in its real sense is when people look for a financial payment even though they have not suffered financially. For example: you buy a sandwich from the supermarket, get home and find a plaster in it. Most of us would simply take the sandwich back and expect not only a heartfelt apology for the mistake, but also a replacement sandwich. There are however, an increasing number of people who would also want the supermarket to PAY them an amount of money for ‘emotional stress’. What a load of old greedy codswallop! Why am I so against compensation? Well, it’s really very easy, it ends up costing everyone else money. Every time someone receives a compensation pay-out, somebody else has to pay for it normally other customers. It’s not free money! If a company has to pay £2 million pounds a year in compensation claims, then it will charge its other customers £2 million pounds to recoup the costs. Sadly, loads of people are after it now. I get lots of calls every week from people saying ‘can JVS help me get compensation out of such and such’? Thankfully my team know my feelings and these callers rarely get on air. 20

You only have to observe the increase in the ‘no win no fee’ solicitors and those ghastly adverts that start with ‘Have YOU had an accident?’, to see what a thriving business claiming compensation is. Sadly, I think it will only get worse and before you know it, everyone will be suing everyone else for each simple mistake made in life. Incidentally, many of the ‘no win no fee’ solicitors charge an absolute fortune for the service they have provided you with in the event of a successful claim. You should always read the small print and understand exactly what you’re getting involved in before you sign a contract with them. A successful pay-out of £1000 doesn’t seem so good when the solicitor takes £800 and you find you’re liable for other charges. So what SHOULD you claim for? Out of pocket expenses are, in my opinion, totally justifiable. But what’s the difference between out of pocket expenses and compensation? It’s very simple - when a company makes a mistake which has a detrimental effect on you financially, I think it’s reasonable for them to pay for this. For example if you have to pay £20 for phone calls to a company to deal with a problem they have caused you, it is in my opinion totally reasonable to ask the company to

reimburse you the cost. If I was having a new boiler installed and the plumber dropped a spanner on my tiled kitchen floor, then I would expect him to pay for the cost of replacing the tiles. To me this is obvious and utterly understandable. Most importantly a judge would probably feel the same if it went as far as court. Why is it important that we understand the difference between compensation and out of pocket expenses though? I’ll tell you why, because using the word ‘compensation’ very often antagonises companies. They have a keen radar waiting to sniff out greedy little consumers desperate to make a quick buck and are often quick to dismiss such claims even though there may be a justifiable complaint. My advice is to always ensure that you are only claiming for reimbursement of costs rather than looking to make a profit out of a problem and ALWAYS use the phrase ‘out of pocket expenses’ rather than the dreaded C word!

In The Garden For me, winter is all about window gardening. That is, enjoying the garden from the window with a cup of soup in your hands There might not be much natural colour in the garden this time of year, but that is not to say there isn’t any, you just have to look harder, or differently.

If you got it right, you will now be admiring the bare bones and structural beauty of your plot. Perhaps the drama of red-stemmed dogwood and yellow-stemmed willow, both classic shrubs for winter colour, and – if your garden is big enough – specimen trees with fabulous bark, such as a shiny cherry (Prunus serrula) or a fabulous peeling Acer griseum. Stick a dark green, well clipped, evergreen hedge behind any of the above and you have highlighted everything beautifully. Berries are a must, from trees such as rowan, through to shrubs like holly and Cotoneaster, Skimmia and Gaultheria. For a more unusual twist, try the rather surreal-purple berries of Callicarpa. They are always a talking point.

Phone security is a serious issue!

owadays itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably more worrying if someone steals your phone than your purse because of the amount of data stored on it: bank, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon accounts, are the tip of the iceberg. Your first line of defence is to make it hard for thieves to get into the phone. Make sure you've got your phone lock turned on so that they have to enter your password. If you're using a pattern or pin code to unlock the phone make sure it's not something simple like 1234 or a rectangle. SIM cards can be switched to another phone and used to run up bills of thousands of pounds. Notify your provider as soon as you realise your phone is missing. A delay may mean that you incur unnecessary charges. Although phone companies are being exhorted to cap the amount of liability a customer incurs if their phone is misused, at the time of writing this is not commonplace. Make sure your SIM is locked, as well as your handset, and check with your provider to see if you can voluntarily place a cap on your usage; that way, the phone will cut out once the limit is reached. Switch your location service on. Your phone will then be able to tell you where it is. Apple, Android and other major systems all have online phone location websites. You can locate and lock the phone, make it ring or even wipe it. Mobile phones, like laptops are open to hackers. In general phones are more secure from virus attacks, but you still need to be wary of criminals. Virus attacks on phones mostly occur via dodgy apps. Apple are very strict about what is allowed into iTunes so virus protection

isn't an issue. On Android devices you need to be more careful. Read reviews carefully and check the permissions the app requests when you install it. If it's a simple app asking for full access to your phone, it should ring alarm bells. If in doubt don't install. Most of the major security companies produce Android apps to give you an extra level of security. Install one of these to give you extra peace of mind. Remember, when your phone connects to a Wi-Fi hotspot all the information it sends and receives passes through the computer controlling that hotspot. Always be aware of who owns the hotspot and how much you trust them. Most data, like bank logins and other major services, are highly encrypted so they can't be stolen. However, other websites you use will not be as secure and may allow your login details to be hi-jacked. Check that the website or app you are using is secure (look for a little padlock icon) before you type in your details, especially card details. If in any doubt, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use it. Phone security is mostly about being aware of the problem and using common sense. If you follow the steps above, then even if you do lose your phone, it shouldn't cause you any serious issues.
