Tring Rd. / Harling Rd. Roundabout, Eaton Bray. LU6 2LA WE HAVE MOVED TO:

Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable!

More Precious than Gold!

“The secret to my success over the 400m is that I run the 200m as hard as I can. Then, for the second 200m, with God’s help, I run faster!”

It’s an Olympic year! And after 100 years, the games will be returning to Paris! One of the standout moments from the 1924 games is the spectacular performance put in by Eric Liddell. The Flying Scotman, this young Scottish sprinter, left the games with a gold medal in the 400m, as well as breaking both Olympic and World records in the process which stood for over 35 years.

The name Eric Liddell has been solidified into British culture through the film, ‘Chariots of Fire’. Who hasn’t pretended to run in slow motion upon hearing the soundtrack by Vangelis? Surely, it should be part of a practical British citizenship test alongside the making of ‘a nice cup of tea’?

The story of Liddell’s Olympic glory is well-known. But the before and after of his life is just as fascinating.

running on a different day. No one thought it possible to sprint the whole way, but Liddell did and it changed the games forever. He saw his running as his worship to God. Liddell said that God “made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure.”

Liddell gained athletic fame at the age 24. However, he didn’t find his contentment in races, but in serving Jesus Christ who gave him eternal hope and purpose.

In 1925, He returned to China to serve as a missionary. He continued to do so well into World War II. In 1943, he was captured by the Japanese and put into an internment camp, where he sought to share the good news of Jesus, and to encourage those around him.

Liddell was born in China to Scottish parents working as missionaries. He came back to the UK to study. It was at Edinburgh University that his athletic prowess was seen as he became known as the fastest runner in Scotland. He played for the Scottish rugby team between 1922 and 1923. While the 100m sprint was his strongest discipline, he withdrew from the 100m race in the 1924 Olympics as the race happened on a Sunday. Being a devout Christian, he refused to race; instead suggesting he run the 400m instead

Liddell looked to do good to others, and reportedly even turned town the opportunity for freedom from the camp in 1944 by giving his offer of freedom to another prisoner, a pregnant woman. Just months from before the end of the war in 1945, Liddell died from an undiagnosed brain tumour.

Eric looked to run his race of life with his eyes fixed on the finish line which was to gain the prize which Jesus had already won for him. To enter into the eternity of heaven to be with his God who he had served and followed throughout his life.

Anyone can enter this race of faith that Eric ran. It is a marathon not a sprint and it can be started whenever you’re ready to follow Jesus. To find out more, contact us at CCD.

The starter pistol is ready. Will you run? On your marks… Get set…

Inclusive Play Equipment Installed At Grove House Gardens

A project to install inclusive play equipment in the Grove House Gardens Play Area has created a new-look play area open to all.

Dunstable Town Mayor Cllr Liz Jones, alongside Central Bedfordshire Councillor Mary Walsh Executive Member for Planning and Waste, officially opened the new section of the play area with the newly installed inclusive equipment on Friday 5 April.

The new play equipment reflects Dunstable Town Council’s commitment to ensuring that children of all abilities, can enjoy the benefits of outdoor play in a safe and inclusive environment.

The new equipment provided includes sensory play panels that ignite the imagination, a wheelchair accessible roundabout, an inclusive see-saw and swing; all of which provide children of all abilities with the opportunity to experience the thrill of play. These inclusive features not only promote physical activity but also foster a sense of belonging and unity within the community, as children of all abilities come together to share in the joy of play.

The new additions have been made possible by the Governments UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) managed by Central Bedfordshire Council

Mum Organises Charity Ball In Aid Of Hospice That Helps Daughter

A mum from Hertford is organising a glittering black tie event on Saturday 22 June to raise money for Keech Hospice Care – the specialist care charity which has supported her family since her young daughter Amelia was a baby.

Emily Delamaine began preparations for the ball last year, and her goal is to raise £10,000 for Keech.

Emily says: “When Amelia was diagnosed with rare genetic muscular disorder Nemaline Myopathy Type 2 at two weeks old, it felt like our whole world collapsed. We first visited Keech Hospice soon after and spent a wonderful day meeting other families just like ours. For the first time I didn’t feel like the odd one out. When we realised the extent of Amelia’s condition we thought ‘how are we going to cope?’ but Keech has helped show us we can. They provide incredible care for children and adults across our region, and the ball is my way of showing my appreciation and helping ensure other families benefit too.”

The black tie ball will be held at Crews hill Golf Club in Enfield and will feature a three course meal, music, entertainment, and a charity raffle and auction. The star of the ball of course will be Amelia, now 4, along with older sister Penelope 6.

“We’ve already sold out of tickets!” says a delighted Emily. “But we’re still looking for generous donors to offer raffle and auction prizes to help us reach our fundraising target.”

If you would like to donate raffle or auction prizes, please contact letmehelp@keech.org.uk. It is respectfully asked that prizes have a minimum value of £100 or are ‘money can’t buy’ prizes.

Hello again!

from Appledown Rescue Kennels

I am Mabel the resident dog at Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray.

Striking Alfie is a stripy brindle Staffy born in 2016. He may be a more mature chap, but he still has lots of energy! He can be quite strong on the lead and needs a little help to curb his enthusiasm, but soon settles down. Alfie needs a home with owners who enjoy walking, can offer a space on the sofa and lots of love! He could probably live with a female dog pending introductions, but not cats. He might suit an active retired couple.

William the Conqueror and the Normans - Part I

NB “Norman” is a corruption of “Norse Man” or “North Man”, ie a people descending from earlier Viking raids along northern France who had settled in what is now Normandy and had adopted French ways and language. But in the 11th century, they were still essentially Viking in attitude. Following the death of the Saxon king Edward the Confessor, there was acrimonious dispute over succession to the English throne. There were many claimants eg:- William, Duke of Normandy, claimed that it had originally been bequeathed to him by Edward whilst in Normandy - and later ratified by Harold Godwinson. But the English nobles (the Witan) persuaded Edward, on his death bed, to renege on this agreement and give it to Harold Godwinson instead. He became Harold 2nd and was the last Saxon king. However, Tostig (Harold’s older brother) also claimed the crown, as did Harald Hardraade of Norway. He joined with Tostig and together, in the autumn of 1066, invaded northern England. There followed the Battle of Stamford Bridge (near York) when Harold Godwinson (now king) had to march all the way to York. In the battle which followed, both Harold Hardraade and Tostig were killed and the defeated Norwegian and rebel English army sent packing. Then, after the initial euphoria of victory, Harold learned that Duke William (who had waited for many weeks for the wind to change direction before invading England) had finally landed on the Sussex coast and was waiting for him. So Harold’s weary army had to march all the way back to Sussex where, on

October 14th, 1066, at the Battle of Hastings, they were defeated. But it had been very close fought and the Saxons almost won. What a difference to English history this would have made for the succeeding Normans changed England more than anyone else had.

After his victory, William went on a rampage through south east England showing (by his destruction of towns and villages) just who was boss. He crossed the Thames and continued north and was offered the crown at Berkhamsted. After this, he carried on through Bedfordshire - leaving Royal lands such as at Houstone (Houghton) untouched - but ravishing everywhere else before turning back south to reach London. Soon afterwards William had himself crowned in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. This made him both Duke of Normandy and King of England.

Route through Beds

William was a hard man - he ruled with a rod of iron. He’d had a very tough upbringing and trusted nobody. He had a monumental chip on his shoulder due to his illegitimacy (his mother was the lowly daughter of a tanner) and he was cruel. On one occasion he ordered that the hands and feet of 32 ringleaders of a revolt in Normandy be cut off saying “They shall crawl footless and handless for the rest of their days “. Clearly, not a man to mess with!

As predicted following the defeat, any Saxon who owned land was dispossessed ; and a strict feudal system imposed in which 96% of the native Saxon

people (including former landowners) were under some form of Norman yoke. They all became serfs under Norman lords.

He redistributed previous Saxon land amongst his supporting barons and earls - and small pieces of scattered land were found everywhere - as shown by change of land ownership in our area. It is recorded that the Saxon thegn (a landholder, pronounced “thane”), Leofnoth, was “relieved” of his land at Totenehou (Totternhoe) and given to Walter of Flanders as a “thank you” for services rendered (as flag bearer) at the Battle of Hastings. In contrast, there is also the story of Lady Godiva who was the wife of the favoured Lord of Coventry. She was appalled at the treatment of the vanquished Saxons - and of her husband’s indifference to their plight - and rode naked through the streets of Coventy so as to show her disgust of the system and to shame her husband.

Minor revolts - and there were many organised by disgruntled Saxons such as Hereward the Wake in the Fen district around Ely - were put down harshly. But a major revolt - instigated by the Bishop of Durham in 1069 - spread quickly over the north of England. William felt that he had to teach the locals a lesson and it was brutally put down and almost genocidal. In what is known as “The Harrowing of the North” there was mass slaughter and destruction and burnings of towns, villages, livestock and crops. It took decades for the north to recover from this devastation and it has been said that William’s reign was a “21 year reign of terror” ruled by fearand with the defeated Saxons being treated like vermin. Consequently, the Normans were loathed and despised. This unhappy state of affairs continued over the whole country for the next 20 years with very few Saxons achieving any position of influence anywhere - virtually everything of power or possession had been given to Norman overlords. It has been estimated that the controlling Normans represented only 1% of the population and that 200 Norman lords now replaced 4000 original Saxon lords. It has also been estimated that only 8% of the entire country remained in Saxon hands. Being a Saxon was not a happy state of affairs.

But it wasn’t all bad. The Normans revolutionised building in this country. Until now, buildings had mostly been fairly small and mainly of wood (even churches) but the Normans built their more important structures in stone. There are still many churches and cathedrals which are of Norman origin or influence (eg the Priory Church in Dunstable shows Norman influence in the rounded archesespecially in the Great West Door).

It seems hypocritical that the harsh and jackbooting Normans should also be pious enough to build so many places of worship. And it wasn’t just religious houses that they built - there were defensive edifices such as the colossal White Tower (in the Tower of London) and scores of small “motte and bailey” castles all over the country eg atop the Knolls at Totternhoe affording splendid look out facilities.

But these new buildings and fortifications weren’t the end of how the Normans totally changed England. There was the introduction of the enforced servitude known as the Feudal System followed by the swingeing changes caused by the Domesday Survey yet to come. England would never be the same again. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about why you need smart lighting in your home.

When I first started my lighting business there was no such thing as smart lighting. It is a concept that has developed and evolved alongside technology’s advancements over the past couple of decades, and our homes are all the better for it… about making where we live inviting, attractive and more secure; yet it transcends the mere ability to switch lights on and off remotely.

Think about convenience, customisation and automation. You can enjoy the comfort of walking into a well-lit home without manually switching lights on. In reverse, you can significantly lower electricity costs by activating lights only when needed, and by turning off when not in use. And of course all configurations are available via an app.

Then consider smart LED bulbs, that significantly outlast traditional incandescent bulbs, boasting lifespans ranging from 25,000-50,000 hours compared to the mere 1,000-2,000 hours of their conventional counterparts.

Given their extended duration of service, investing in smart LEDs not only ensures lighting for decades based on usage, but also represents a wise financial thinking.

I also love the voice control element of lighting our homes - a ground-breaking advance where lighting settings can be directed through straightforward voice commands.

By pairing your smart lighting with leading smart home assistants such as Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa, users gain the ability to effortlessly command switch on, turn off, dim, or colour alteration.

Of course security is a big thing too – the ‘away mode’ functionality allows homeowners to mimic occupancy by systematically turning lights on and off, creating the illusion of someone being at home. When integrated with a comprehensive home security system, this feature serves as a robust deterrent against unauthorised entry.

And finally, remote-controlled lighting solutions for homes offer the ability to create diverse atmospheres and settings. Beyond simple dimming, these innovative lights boast a spectrum of colours, changeable on command, to perfectly match any desired ambiance.

Schedule your kitchen to brighten for your morning coffee, the living room for a midday reading session and the bedroom for a soft, calming glow at night, while keeping other areas dim to conserve energy and create the perfect ambiance for every moment of your day.

These are all reasons why the smart lighting revolution has become such an important part of our lives – for versatility, efficiency, economy and pleasure.

A Stroke of Genius

When it comes to brightening up your home, there’s nothing a pot of paint can’t solve, but with terminology abound, where do you start?

Primer

Primer is a preparatory coating applied before painting to ensure better adhesion of the paint to the surface, improve durability, and enhance coverage. It helps to create a smooth and uniform base for your coloured paint.

Interior paint

This type of paint is formulated for use on interior walls and ceilings. It comes in various finishes such as matte, eggshell, satin, and gloss to suit different preferences and purposes.

Durable emulsion paint

A type of interior paint designed to provide longlasting durability and resilience to everyday wear and tear. It’s formulated with special additives and binders that enhance its toughness and resistance to scuffs, stains, and cleaning agents. Durable emulsion paint is particularly suitable for high-traffic areas such as hallways, kitchens, and children’s rooms.

Bathroom paint

Bathroom paint is a specialised type of interior paint formulated to withstand the unique conditions present in bathrooms, such as high humidity, moisture, and frequent cleaning. One of the most important features of bathroom paint is its ability to resist mould and mildew growth.

Exterior paint

Exterior paint will withstand outdoor elements such as sunlight, rain, and temperature fluctuations. It typically provides better durability and resistance to fading and mildew compared to interior paint.

Wood paint

For wooden surfaces, including furniture, trim, doors, and outdoor structures like decks and fences, wood paint is usually quick drying and is often designed to be flexible, allowing it to expand and contract with the wood as it expands and contracts due to changes in temperature and humidity.

Magnetic paint

Magnetic paint contains iron particles that allow magnets to adhere to the surface once the paint is applied. It’s ideal for creating magnetic walls or surfaces for displaying artwork, notes, and other magnetic items.

Chalkboard paint

Ideal for children’s bedrooms, chalkboard paint allows you to transform surfaces into writable chalkboards, providing a fun and functional way to decorate walls, furniture, and other items. Just make sure your little one’s know that not all the walls in your home are for drawing on!

Topcoat

Finally, a topcoat refers to the last layer of paint or finish applied to a surface after the base coats have been applied and allowed to dry. The purpose of a topcoat is to provide additional protection, durability, and aesthetic enhancement to the underlying layers of paint or substrate.

Now then, where did you put those brushes…?

Seven Outdoor Essentials

How a few additions to your outdoor areas can endlessly extend the homeliness of your plot.

For those fortunate to have outside space, incorporating cosy furniture, a grill, some added privacy, or even a full-on entertainment system, can turn an inhospitable and basic backyard into a welcoming spot for relaxation and leisure.

Here are seven ways you can achieve the look:

Simple seating

Decorate your outdoor space with simple yet comfortable seating that opens up the garden to mealtimes, social gatherings or just quiet chilling.

Choose resilient outdoor materials like ratan, eco-friendly teak and steel. These will withstand the sun and moisture, not to mention those wild outdoor temperature fluctuations as the year progresses.

You’re fired

How about transforming an area of your garden into a versatile, all-season cooking area with the use of a fire pit? Pre-made units can cost as little as £100, either on stands or, better still, sunk into the ground, with the heat provided fostering social gatherings galore, and making them cosy even during cooler weather.

P is for privacy

Wooden fences have long been a go-to for outdoor privacy, but consider living walls, which turn bland areas into distinctive gardens through the beauty of vegetation.

Alternatively, recycled pallet dividers present themselves as a budget-friendly choice; while, although more costly, boxwood hedges - which thrive in both sun and shade, and adapt to various soil conditions - provide an enduring alternative.

Light up your lift

Festoon and fairy lights have always added a gentle glow to backyard environments.

sun and shade, and adapt to always added a gentle glow to backyard environments.

Whether hung over a dining space, woven through tree limbs or strung across a trellis, these lights immediately improve an area with their twinkling, flowing glow, with their adaptability allowing for endless creative possibilities.

their adaptability allowing for endless creative possibilities.

Projecting promise

Projecting promise

Enhance your garden glee by turning it into an open-air cinema. All it takes is a basic or mini-projector and a big screen (or white sheet if you are really looking to preserve budget). A good guideline is to match the screen size with the projector’s maximum image capability for crisp and vivid visuals.

Minimising midges and more

While Tiki torches provide atmospheric and inexpensive light for your outdoor entertainment area and are commonly used to illuminate garden paths, flowerbeds and patios, they are also powerful insect repellents when filled with citronella oil.

Hot,

or what?

Whoever knew a tub, a few bubbling jets and 500 gallons of hot water could be so much fun?!

Hot tubs can be integrated into swimming pools, recessed into decks, or simply placed standalone, and are a great allyear-round option..

KING OF THE GRILL

Embrace outdoor entertaining and learn to barbecue like a pro.

Here in the UK, there’s an acceptance that we can, at times, fail to properly embrace the magic that is the barbecue, yet there is so much to love about this ultimate outdoor food experience.

For starters, the food tastes so much better. Barbecuing imparts a unique and delicious smoky flavour to food that is difficult to replicate with other cooking methods. The combination of wood smoke, spices and marinades adds layers of complexity and depth to the taste of meat, vegetables, and other grilled foods.

It is also a social activity, bringing people together to gather around the grill, share stories, and enjoy delicious food. The creation of that relaxed, informal atmosphere encourages conversation and camaraderie among friends and family.

How to barbecue

Grilling is an alchemy of wood, smoke and meat, so each factor matters…

Fuel

If you can, choose lumpwood charcoal, made from high-quality hardwoods, then add woodchips for a specific flavour (oak, apple, cherry, maple etc.). Avoid charcoal that smells of petrol - it will probably have been made

using accelerator fluid, which will taint your food.

Equipment

Invest in a quality barbecue grill or smoker that suits your needs and preferences. Whether you prefer charcoal, gas or electric, make sure your equipment is well-maintained and properly calibrated for optimal cooking results. A good, solid pair of tongs and heat-proof gloves are also handy.

Preheat

Before cooking, preheat your grill to the appropriate temperature for the food you’re preparing. This ensures even cooking and helps to create those desirable grill marks and caramelisation on your food (yum!).

Temperature

Learn how to control the temperature of your grill or smoker to achieve the desired level of doneness for your food, using a combination of direct and indirect heat zones.

Furthermore, investing in a good meat thermometer is a great idea for optimal cooking and ensuring everything is safe for consumption.

Ingredients

Start with fresh, highquality ingredients for your barbecue recipes. Choose well-marbled cuts of meat, fresh vegetables and high-quality spices and seasonings to enhance flavour - a trip to your local butcher or fishmonger is well worth the extra effort.

Seasoning

Season your meat and vegetables generously with a tasty rub, marinade, or spice blend before cooking. Allow the seasoning to penetrate the food for added flavour and moisture.

Add in patience, practice and an allowance to feast to your heart (and stomach’s) content, and your barbecue will soon become an essential part of a happy summer routine.

Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column

He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about how to water your garden in the summer…

Asked the best time to water your garden, my advice usually is to embrace the morning for this, as this matches with the natural rhythm of plant life, coinciding

with the rise of the sun and the dawning of their daily cycle of drawing moisture from the earth.

This also optimises water usage, and means you are not promoting the nasties that dusk watering might invite – the unwelcome advances of slugs and onset of mildew!

Beyond this, as far as plants go, be careful to note their growth, the vibrancy of their leaves and the robustness of their blooms. Also allow the soil to approach dryness before watering as this encourages roots to delve deeper, fostering the plant’s resilience, yet look beyond any superficial dryness –probe deeper.

For those of us with container gardens, or the constrained roots of plants nestled against walls, vigilance must increase as their world is smaller and their resources finite. Rather than scattering water thinly across the surface, a focused, deep watering can revive and sustain plants far more effectively, encouraging deep root growth and the fight against famine.

Finally, innovations in garden watering – from reservoir-based containers extending intervals between watering, to drip irrigation systems that deliver with precision – offer us tools to use water with respect and efficiency.

How to keep your car on the road while still contributing positively to the environment.

Don’t panic, having an eco mind and a stylish ride can both be achieved, if we go about our daily travels with a little more care and consideration.

Driving style

Firstly, consider this scenario - you’re driving on an empty motorway and the temptation is there to push the pedal to the metal, right?

Well, you may experience the positive effects of arriving at your destination sooner, yet for the environment there is a cost. That’s because aggressive driving, such as speeding (and the excessive braking it provokes) can reduce your fuel efficiency by approximately 15-30% at motorway speeds, and 10-40% in stop-start traffic.

The most fuel-efficient speed we can do varies with each vehicle, but it’s usually between 40-50mph.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your vehicle presents another area where huge efficiencies can be maintained. From keeping tyres properly inflated – a monthly check is recommended as pressure can vary with seasonal weather alterations – to oil changes, keeping fuel and air filters clear… these will all aid driving that limits the effect on the environment.

Weight

Arguably the greatest thing that leads us to burn more fuel is the weight we are carrying around in our cars. Therefore eliminating

unnecessary baggage – car seats and that old set of golf clubs! – will mean a lighter care, a cheaper journey, and one that’s better for the environment.

Aerodynamics

And don’t underestimate the effect of poor aerodynamics either. Sure, you may not be driving Lewis Hamilton’s new Ferrari, but a roof rack will create extra drag, so remove it when you’re not using it.

Air con

Then you have air conditioning. While, on a warm day, that cool breeze can make all the difference, it’s another element that leads to increased fuel usage. In fact, operating the A/C in extremely hot conditions can lower a standard vehicle’s fuel efficiency by over 25%, especially during shorter journeys.

Waterless car wash

Finally, consider using a waterless car wash. These solutions are available from motoring stores,

and although they’re only effective on lightly-soiled cars, the end result is often impressive.

Put it this way, a typical home car wash using hose and bucket consumes 80-140 gallons of water. For a commercial car wash, it’s about 45 gallons per wash. A waterless wash requires only 4-6 gallons of water.

++

Ultimately, our cars are a convenience many of us cannot do without. Accepting this, but pursuing ways of making driving greener, means we’re keeping happy not just our employers, friends and families, but the environment too!

The Ultimate Travel Checklist

There’s nothing like the exited build-up to a holiday, be it at home or abroad. And by the same association, no single sensation of extreme panic when realising you’ve forgotten, mislaid or misinterpreted something, whereby your dream break may be jeopardised!

But relax… here’s a handy guide to ensuring your escape is an exercise in organised excellence.

Important documents

The obvious - ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from the date of travel. And at the same time make sure any visas or necessary travel permits are completed and filed.

Always carry some other form of photo ID, and obtain travel insurance that covers health, travel delays, theft and loss. Also, printing your travel itinerary provides a handy back-up should you need it.

Health precautions

Check if you need any vaccinations for your destination well in advance and make sure that you stay informed about any health advisories or travel warnings related to your destination.

Finances

Obtain some local currency for immediate arrival and use a travel wallet to keep your documents organised and secure.

Clothes and accessories

Pack clothes suitable for the climate of your destination, but also factor in possible days away from the beach or mountains, where the bikinis and trunks can be subtly substituted for an altogether more stylish type of attire.

Toiletries

Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and face wash should all be in travel-sized containers to comply with airport security regulations (although these stipulations are gradually being relaxed). Bring any prescribed medications with sufficient supply for the trip, a copy of the prescription, and a first aid kit.

Electronics

A phone charger is essential and portable battery pack smart. Check as well if you need a power adapter or converter for your electronics in your destination.

Comfort items

Travel pillows and blanket are ideal for long flights or train rides, while earplugs and eye masks are helpful for sleeping in noisy environments or adjusting to new time zones. Consider too books and/or e-readers for entertainment during travel.

Snacks and hydration

Remember that sunglasses, hats and scarves can be both suave and functional, and bring a small laundry bag to separate dirty clothes from clean ones.

Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, while packing non-perishable snacks like nuts, bars or dried fruit will save you money at the everoverpriced airport.

Luggage

address,

Choose a durable and easy-to-carry piece of luggage based on your needs and length of stay, label your luggage with name, contact information and accommodation address, and use packing cubes to organise items within.

What they don’t tell you about supermarket loyalty cards

What they don’t tell you about supermarket loyalty cards

We live in the era of the loyalty card, yet are we fully clued up as to what we signed up for?

Supermarket loyalty cards – think the Tesco ‘Clubcard’ or Sainsbury’s ‘Nectar’ scheme –are popular among tens of millions of shoppers. From the consumer side, they unlock special deals, enable the redeeming of points that can be turned into treats, trips and gifts, and can even offer a feeling of prestige.

Yet is the outlook all positive? Are there negative elements of loyalty cards that, in the rush for savings, we all too quick to overlook?

Privacy concerns

First up, signing up for a supermarket loyalty card permits the provider to begin to collect data on your shopping habits. This detailed information offers a deep analysis of consumer behaviour, thereby enabling the tailoring of marketing strategies to match consumer needs.

Price comparisons

The complex nature of loyalty schemes lessens the ability for consumers to make effective price comparisons. As an example, when factoring in ‘eat in’ and takeaway variations, the Pret a Manger ‘Club Pret’ scheme offers effectively means each sandwich has four different prices.

Alternatives

Of course, not all supermarkets subscribe to the concept of loyalty cards. For example, Aldi chooses not to implement a loyalty scheme, maintaining competitive pricing by offering a limited selection of products and focusing on high turnover rates – a strategy which allows them to keep costs low without the need to gather extensive data on customer preferences.

You may also find your personal details are not confined to supermarket use. They may be shared or sold to other sister or partnered companies.

Cost implications

Supermarket loyalty cards offer discounts that may initially seem beneficial, but can encourage consumers to spend more than is necessary. These cards can also set up deals to incentivise additional purchases that we may not need, increasing their spending under the guise of savings.

They may additionally persuade customers to consolidate their activity at one store, rather than ultimately shopping around for the best deal.

There is also a significant conflict between price points for loyalty card members, and not. For those not participating, the notion that the person next to you is paying less for the same product can lead to a negative brand perception.

All in all, while supermarket loyalty cards can offer immediate discounts, personalised deals and the chance to redeem points for big treats, consumers should remain wary of privacy concerns, greater exposure to marketing, and a potential lack of awareness of choice elsewhere.

Health & Fittness

Gene Genie

Can we control our genes and potentially live long? Science says ‘yes’.

While, as babies, we inherit approximately 20,000 geneseach gene has two copies, one from each parent – the study of epigenetics shows that lifestyle choices can also influence the activity of those genes.

In essence, this means we can affect how those genes are expressed, or ‘turned on’ or ‘off,’ through various lifestyle factors.

Change your diet

It’s no secret that eating better makes you feel better, and the food we eat can impact gene expression in processes like metabolism, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

For instance, studies suggest that components of foods like fruits, vegetables, and fish can influence genes in ways that may promote health.

However, you can do more than just eat ‘more healthily’ by specifically incorporating foods that activate AMPK, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in cellular energy homeostasis. Good quality green tea and the antioxidant quercetin –found in onions, broccoli, citrus fruits and berries –are proven to help activate the ‘master switch’ of our metabolism.

Sleep more

What better excuse to hit snooze than to boost your lifespan? Not only is sleep essential for overall health and can influence gene expression related to

metabolism, immune function and brain health, but disrupted sleep patterns may also contribute to various health conditions.

It’s not just about clocking up hours, our bodies also seek consistent sleep patterns to aid its circadian network, and minimal exposure to light during sleep periods.

Get moving

For over a decade, scientists have been studying a gene called FOXO3 which activates autophagy - the process of cells getting rid of old and worn parts, which is vital for increasing healthy lifespan.

Exercise is an effective way of activating the gene as it responds to the stress of workouts on the body.

The good news is that FOXO3 protects against cardiovascular disease and cardiometabolic disease (heart attacks, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).

Chill out

Chronic stress can affect gene expression, particularly genes involved in the body’s stress response and immune function. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing are useful tools in reducing stress.

Clean up your act

It’s hardly surprising that toxic substances can damage your cells and inhibit properly functioning networks within your body. Yet this isn’t just about quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption en route to cutting the risk of various diseases including cancer, even a subtle reduction in toxins, pollutants, and chemicals can be achieved by switching to natural cleaning products in your home.

Freshen up your fingers and toes with these hot new nail trends.

Summer is here and you’ve got your look sorted. Subtle golden skin, dewy, warm weather makeup (with SPF, obviously), new sunglasses and many a maxi dress. Yet it’s easy to neglect one part of our body that holds heaps of style potential: our nails.

So, whether you have a wedding to attend, a holiday booked, or just fancy a spruce up, these nail trends are bound to brighten your summer.

Pretty in pink

Balletcore is a huge trend in fashion and beauty right now, but if you don’t want to go full ballet pumps and pink ribbons, this manicure is for you.

Soft, feminine pinks and pearly whites make this a subtle and delicate look which can be further elaborated on with a nail art bow or accent in a slightly darker shade of pink. Perfect for daytime and the office.

The modern French

While the French manicure is arguably the antithesis of modernity, the essence of the trend is a neutral or even clear base finished with a flourish of

colour on the tip, something that’s always en vogue.

The beauty of this look is the infinite possibilities, with manicurists taking the opportunity to be as playful and avant-garde as possible.

Think geometric tips in bold hues, animal print tips, super short nails with a different colour for every finger and even nails that appear to have been dipped in layers of coloured paint and then left to dry!

Short and sweet

If your nails are always breaking, then rejoice! Short nails are firmly back in fashion. Softly squared off at the tip and in a rich or bold hue, the only downside is the upkeep.

The surrounding area needs to be moisturised and trimmed of cuticles, so it’s worth investing in a dedicated nail oil and a topcoat to add shine and prevent chipping.

Nuts about almonds

Almond-shaped nails are hot right now, with the benefit of longer nails adorned with a soft point being that it gives fingers the illusion of extra length and elegance.

It’s a flattering shape that works with any colour or kind of polish and can easily be achieved by using acrylics or growing your own nails, clipping the corners and then filing into a gentle curve.

Chrome or home

Metallics and chrome shades are having a moment, albeit they aren’t the kind of polishes you remember from your teenaged days.

For starters, technology has come a long way, and the new formulas have high pigmentation for maximum depth of colour. Think matte, shiny, gold, silver, gun-metal or even bronze.

3 Colours 3 Tones

Sketch a scene. Now think about editing it. Focus on a limited number of main shapes and patterns that will best describe the scene. The idea is to be as simple as possible with your shapes. Create a contrast between three tones such as (white, black, grey) and shade them in with pencil. Use this as your starting point. Copy what you have done onto paper but replace your tones with three complimentary colours to replicate light, dark and grey. Think of interesting colour combinations and add white to lighten your colours. Paint in the shapes very carefully with acrylics. A dark sky will add mood. Try another one swapping the tones about in the same colours (maybe a light sky and a dark foreground). Enjoy!

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky Looking Up!

June & July 2024

Spot Saturn Before Sunrise:

Saturn makes a welcome return to our night sky this summer. After lurking close to the Sun through springtime the ringed planet can be found as a white-yellow ‘star’ low to the south-east horizon about an hour ahead of sunrise in early June. It is easy to pick out with the naked eye by the absence of any of other bright stars nearby.

At the end of June Saturn is visible two hours ahead of sunrise, and by mid-July it is on view by about midnight. If you have a small telescope do have a go and finding Saturn. The rings are quite easy to resolve with a 90mm+ aperture telescope. This year the rings appear almost edge-on to our earthbound viewpoint.

Take a Look at Vega:

One of the brightest stars we have visible in the early summer sky is Vega. Look high up to your south-east and overhead to catch this blue-white diamond of a star. The blue tint you see to Vega’s light indicates that it is a hot star – twice as hot as the Sun. It’s distance is about 25 light years away, so the light you’re seeing from Vega has taken 25 years to reach your eyes tonight!

Look North for the Aurorae Borealis:

Early May saw the strongest display of the aurorae borealis, or northern lights, across the UK for more than 20 years. Despite the lighter summer nights there’s a good chance that we’ll have further displays over the next few months. Keep your eyes to the north!

WILD APP-VENUTRE

Awesome apps to make outdoor hobbies even more pleasurable.

No matter what activity inspires us most when it comes to journeying away from home comforts, we always seek to enhance the experience. And while we often go into nature as a way of escaping our smartphones, there are also a multitude of apps and online tools that can transform your phone into the key to the ultimate adventure.

Geo-caching apps

Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game where participants, known as geocachers, use specific coordinates – often listed on geocaching websites or apps –and then attempt to find hidden containers called geocaches or caches.

Inside each geocache, there is typically a logbook for geocachers to sign,

sometimes small trinkets or items for trading.

Geocaching offers a new way to discover various locations, often in nature or historically significant sites, and encourages exploration, outdoor activity, and problemsolving skills. It’s a global activity with millions of geocaches hidden all around the world.

Navigational apps

Gone are the days of scrappily folded, sprawling paper maps of the great British countryside, as a multitude of digital tools step in to make the job considerably easier.

giving you step-by-step instructions on the way.

In addition, most of these services offer offline maps for when you’re in the wilderness, plus online communities with tips on how to best enjoy your trip and places of interest along the way.

Nature spotting apps

If you’re a seasoned ornithophile, you may swear by your analogue methods of birdwatching. However, the Collins British Bird Guide and Birds of Britain Pro are designed to make birding that little bit better. Search for a species by location, time of year or plumage traits and listen to hundreds of recordings to aid identification.

Whether you prefer to cycle or hike, apps such as Komoot or AllTrails strive to make the process more straightforward by helping plan the route to your destination, then

destination,

Similarly, apps such as PlantSnap and Seek by iNaturalist use top notch tech to help you identify plants and animal species simply by uploading a picture of them.

Tidal apps

Track the tides and never be disappointed again. Whether you’re an avid surfer, fisherman kayaker, or just fancy the odd spot of mud larking down an estuary, tidal apps will make the experience so much easier.

Offering in-depth tidal predictions including moon and sunset/sunrise information, you’ll be able to see, at a glance, when it’s the ideal time to hit the waves… or retreat from them!
