Steep Canyon Rangers

APR 23/Wednesday 7:30PM

MAY 3/Saturday 7:30PM

Arlo Guthrie grew up surrounded by dancers and musicians; he learned something from everyone and developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in the crowded community of singer-songwriters and politicalsocial commentators that shaped the 1960s. Arlo’s career exploded with the release of his 1967 album “Alice’s Restaurant,” and over the last four decades he has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia winning a wide, popular following. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, playing the piano, six and twelve-string guitar, harmonica and a dozen other instruments, Arlo is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes figure prominently in his performances.

The Steep Canyon Rangers have just begun to make their mark in the world of great acoustic music, whether on the road with Steve Martin, playing a jam band festival on their own, or opening the ears of traditional bluegrass fans to new sounds and to songs with a new sensibility. While it is perhaps another truism that “Nobody Knows You,” as their album title states, Larry Nager in his liner notes has said it for us all: “This is one band you’re going to want to know better! This is the Steep Canyon Rangers, doing their own brand of bluegrass music in their own way.” Steve will not be on this tour, but the Canyon will definitely deliver.

MAY 16/Friday 8:00PM

Steven Bentley has been on the music scene in the NW for nearly thirty years. A true professional drummer/composer, he has worked steadily in many different styles, from club dates to major shows and countless private functions. As a composer, he has been writing original music throughout his career. His compositions have been featured on many recordings and performances. Combining elements of Jazz, Funk, Latin and Avante Garde, his music has a unique sound that is his signature. Over the years, Steven has performed nationally and internationally, traveling to Cuba and as far away as Japan. He has been involved with countless recordings and performances with local and national artists, such as Jessica Williams, Larry Coryell, Charmaine Neville, Pete Christleib, Pablo Menendez, John Stowell, Jeff Johnson, Bert Wilson, Greta Matassa, Jay Thomas, Gail Pettis, Joe Baque and Obrador.

Bassist for the Matthew Shipp Trio since 2009, Michael invariably astounds audiences with the beauty of his tone and the intensity of his very personal musical language. His music has garnered 4 1/2 stars from DownBeat, Jazz Times states his music “resonates with intelligence, emotional depth and probing virtuosity.” Journalist Paul DeBarros in Signal to Noise notes; “For years free improvisers have explored the tactile aspect of performance, in which the nature of the encounter between the player and the instrument becomes the subject of the music itself. Bisio is one of the few musicians that has managed to meld this high-concept sense of physicality with the soulful charge of jazz. His fiddle-high, scraped overtones create a tangled choir that is impossible to resist; his expressiveness with the bow is unmatched. Having whirled the listener into a transportive state, he gently shows them the way out...”

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Daven Tillinghast makes his mark on the Olympia jazz scene with his rootsy but graceful guitar playing, his conversational baritone voice, and his witty but heartfelt songwriting. Daven earned a BA in Creative Writing at Western Washington University and was a fixture on the jazz scene in Bellingham before moving to Olympia in 2006. Since then he has performed with a long list of local acts, including: The Johnny Lewis Band, The Lakewood Community Jazz Band, Steve Munger, Jessica Blinn, Vince Brown, The Northern Lights Orchestra, Brad Schrandt, The Olympia Jazz Tentet, Go Go Typhoon 7, Audiosattva, Hover Conversion Kit, Windham Hill recording artist Scott Cossu, and as lead guitar in the house band for Harlequin Productions.

A native of Seattle, WA, Brian Kinsella is a multitalented musician and educator. Trained as a jazz pianist, Brian studied with Barney McClure, Marc Seales, and Marius Nordal, earning a BA in Philosophy and Jazz Studies from the University of Washington in 2006. From 2006-2011 he was the primary accompanist in the vocal jazz department at Cornish College of the Arts. Brian is an exceptionally prolific performer and recording artist. His debut record, Omen (2002), featured Mark Taylor on saxophones and Jay Thomas on trumpet and flugelhorn. While at university, Brian developed a deep interest in pop formalism, resulting in a solo record, Never Really Mean It (2007). As composer, vocalist, and keyboardist in Seattle rock quartet M. Bison, Brian toured the west coast and recorded an EP, Not Bad! (2008), and a full-length M. Bison (2009) record Welcome to Candyland (2010). www.washingtoncenter.org |

The Washington Center is proud to announce its 18th consecutive year of presenting the world’s finest young musicians in association with Young Concert Artists, Inc. Each season we are thrilled to bring to the stage performers whose skills are already of the highest caliber early in their careers. It is a valuable opportunity to witness the virtuosity and continued development of young talent, but perhaps more importantly, the program allows us to offer a range of educational programs for students to learn directly from the next generation of great concert performers. Young Concert Artists, Inc., was founded in 1961 to discover and launch the careers of extraordinary young musicians—a mission that has been achieved to a phenomenal and unprecedented degree. Many of today’s great performers started their careers with Young Concert Artists—Dawn Upshaw, Emanuel Ax, Eugenia Zukerman, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, Olympia’s internationally rising star Charlie Albright, and last season’s New Frontiers performer Christopher O’Riley.

Behind every great National Geographic story there is a great storyteller: the writers, photographers, filmmakers, scientists, explorers, and adventurers who bring the world home. Through National Geographic Live - a rich public program of speakers, concerts, and films - we present these storytellers on our stage. Our third season with National Geographic Live will include:

Bryan Smith

Casey Anderson

Sam Abell

“The Lens of Adventure”

“Bear With Me”

JAN 10/Friday 7:30PM

FEB 7/Friday 7:30PM

MAR 7/Friday 7:30PM

Bryan Smith is an award winning filmmaker based out of Squamish, British Columbia. His first documentary, 49 Megawatts, received acclaim both for its amazing kayaking footage and insightful exploration of the controversy over British Columbia’s river-based energy production. With extensive experience on just about every camera platform, Bryan’s experience at getting cameras into difficult and remote locations has earned him the title “Extreme Filmmaker.

This popular host of “America the Wild With Casey Anderson” and “Expedition Wild” grew up in Montana surrounded by wild animals and spaces, and was nicknamed the “animal magnet” as a kid. After college, he became a trainer at wildlife parks from the United States to Africa. Then a grizzly bear named Brutus was born in an overpopulated wildlife park and Casey rescued him from being euthanized. He went on to build a sanctuary for Brutus that became Montana Grizzly Encounter, a rescue and education facility he co-owns and directs, and the base from which Casey and Brutus teach park visitors about grizzly anatomy and conservation. An enthusiastic and passionate advocate for wildlife as well as an entertaining and thoughtful presenter, Casey Anderson shares on stage the lessons he’s learned living and working with wild animals.

Master photographer Sam Abell has been documenting our world since 1970. His award-winning images are informed by meticulous research and thoughtful execution. He has covered many iconic stories of our time, including the culture, commerce, and history of the Mississippi River, the writing of the U.S. Constitution, and the lives of creative giants Leo Tolstoy, Lewis Carroll, and Winslow Homer. Several years ago Abell retraced the expanse of the Lewis and Clark trail with the late historian and author Stephen Ambrose. Their resulting book is both beautiful and insightful as it explores the delicate balance between partnership and leadership that Lewis and Clark needed to strike in order to succeed. On stage Abell is one part artist, and one part philosopher, as he takes us deep inside the creative process to explore the universal truths often revealed through photography. www.washingtoncenter.org | 17

Carmen

Hansel & Gretel

Mozart’s The Magic Flute is a colorful parade of wild and whimsical characters - from the high-flying coloratura of the Queen of the Night to Papageno and his flighty bird songs, The Magic Flute is truly a magical opera!

Two sweets-loving children, one hungry witch - watch out, it’s Hansel and Gretel! The classic fairy tale takes an operatic twist in this family favorite by Engelbert Humperdinck, in a charming production from the Opera de Paris.

8th Annual Silent MOVIE Concert Series with Dennis James, House Organist on the Mighty Andy Crow Wurlitzer Organ

Featuring the Best of Rudolph Valentino plus vocalists Connie Corrick and Hugh Hastings

The Sheik (1921)

FEB 13/Thursday7:00PM Out of the swirling sands of an Arabian Night, Rudolph Valentino rode his stallion off the film screen and into women’s hearts. Valentino—his name alone evokes images of the exotic lover, of romance and adventure in distant lands. Rudolph Valentino was born in Italy and worked his way through Europe before landing in New York City in 1913. In America, he worked odd jobs as a dishwasher and tango dancer until he discovered his most valuable assets. He moved into show business with the sponsorship of various older women, often exchanging amorous nights for the proper introductions. This film created a national phenomenon and Valentino became a Hollywood star. This exciting romantic drama stars Rudolph Valentino as Ahmed, the sexy desert Arab sheik, who abducts, charms, and seduces sophisticated English woman Lady Diana Mayo (Agnes Ayres). He wins her heart and then rides to her rescue when she is captured by a rival tribesman.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921)

MAR 6/Thursday7:00PM Rudolph Valentino achieved immense fame as the screen’s Great Lover and became a certified star for his work in this film. Based on Blasco Ibanez’ novel, Valentino is sensational as the tango dancer and ladies’ man Julio Desnoyers. Born into a mixed-heritage family, half French, half German, Julio is forced to reevaluate his decadent and apolitical lifestyle when confronted with the unparalleled horror of the first World War. Stark imagery of the visit of the Four Horsemen - war, conquest, famine, and death- cause Julio to join the war effort and suffer a sacrificial death, making this unforgettable anti-war film a silent classic. A wellcrafted, grim tale that is compulsory for film history buffs and is remembered today especially for the scene of Valentino’s sexy tango dance in a smoke-filled Argentinian cantina.

Connie Corrick

Hugh Hastings

Blood and Sand (1922)

APR 24/Thursday7:00PM Rudolph Valentino stars in this silent era drama as Juan, a young Spaniard who wants to become a famous toreador. Determined to escape poverty and support his widowed mother, Juan quickly rises to national prominence as a bullfighter and marries Carmen, his longtime love. However, as Juan’s celebrity grows, his devastatingly good looks and growing appetite for everything leave him vulnerable to the throngs of women who want him. When Doña Sol (Naldi), a beautiful and exotic society woman, seduces Juan, it marks his fall from grace as gradually his fame, wife, and mistress desert him

FRIENDS

The Friends of the Washington Center are people just like you. For over 25 years the Center has been a part of the South Sound community and, like all non-profit arts organizations, we cannot exist on the strength of ticket sales and rentals alone. We need the help of community members who love the arts, culture, and community that the Washington Center helps foster. Your Friends membership will ensure the Washington Center is able to continue as a home for the arts next week, next month, next year, and in years to come. In addition to helping support the Center’s regular season programming, your Friends contribution helps us provide an affordable, well-equipped and maintained performing arts facility for dozens of local arts organizations. As one of the only available local venues, it is increasingly important that the Center is able to help keep costs low for these community based groups. Your support of the Center gives us the artistic freedom to present a broad selection of national and international performances, bringing world-class music, dance, theater, film, and guest speakers to the South Sound region. Not only does your support help bring the community together through art, your generous donation affords you exclusive privileges, including program recognition, complimentary ticket exchanges, priority seating, and more!

| 2013/14 Season

The Washington Center is committed to being Your Center for the Arts in the South Puget Sound and our commitment centers around education. The Washington Center prides itself on providing educational opportunities to enhance student learning. Our initiative – NEXT GENERATION - consolidates our efforts. We provide an education rental rate to qualifying groups, keeping our rental costs low enough so groups such as Olympia Junior Programs can bring in thousands of children and introduce them to the theater. The Center provides several discounts in order to further arts education. This provides an affordable resource for students and educational groups who may otherwise not be able to attend performances. Students of all ages receive approximately a 10% discount to most WCPA shows. Youth tickets, for those 14 and younger, are half price for most shows, and this year we have added a special $5.00 youth price to several of our performances. Finally, on the day of each event we offer our 10 Buck Tix deal to students who come to the Center in person, with their student I.D. The Center often works with educational organizations to provide group discounts to classes and clubs. If you are interested in attending a performance as an educational group, please call our box office. The Center created the 21st Century Masters series, now in its 18th year, with the Young Concert Artists Association in New York and brings three budding young classical musicians each year to perform as part of our season. As part of their time in the South Sound, they conduct master classes, perform recitals in local area schools, and teach workshops with area young musicians. We annually host “Instrument Petting Zoo” in conjunction with the Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO) during the Spring ArtsWalk, where kids and adults of all ages can come to the theater free of charge and see, touch, and play the instruments of their choice. We have also worked with the Timberland Regional Library, a rural Library District servicing 7,000 square miles through 27 community libraries. All Washington Center presented performances are researched by TRL and a quarterly Resource Guide is created so students interested in a study guide of upcoming performances can find extended, thorough materials. Many student groups and classes center projects around a performance and this allows them to use the resources available through TRL to gain a greater understanding of an artist or a performance.
