Cameron Carpenter Mr. Carpenter will play a traditional organ concert but with a virtuosity and flair to rival Hahn Bin last year. Expect the dust to get blown out of the pipes! Seattle Symphony We have renewed our relationship with the SSO this year and are welcoming Ludovic Morlot, their new Music Director to The Center for the first time. Maestro Morlot is doing great work and the Symphony loves playing in our acoustically live hall. I plan on sitting in the balcony where the sound is the best as is floats up from the stage.

Welcome to The Center and our 2012-2013 Season.

We hope you see some performers you love and discover some new ones that bring you joy and show a new way to look at the world. Instead of the traditional welcome letter; the staff and I have compiled a list of our favorites for next year – think of it as fun recommendations from us on the inside. I hope to see you at The Center. —Kevin Boyer Kevin Boyer, Interim Executive Director Del McCoury Band: Tribute to Bill Monroe Coming from a country music family; (I sang in a 2nd generation family country band!), I am a traditional country fan at heart and this tribute to one of the greats by one of the greats is going to bring me back home. Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal …To get the opportunity to bring European-style modern jazz dance to the South Sound is such a rarity I jumped at the chance. In the mold of Pina Bausch, this troupe will be sexy and strong. Broadway’s Next Hit Musical On a lark I caught this group in New York last year in their home theater and laughed the entire performance. For them to improvise an entire Broadway style musical, including the music(!) based on audience titles is incredible and absolutely hilarious. No night is ever the same! Catch both shows…

Circa There are a lot of Cirque groups out there but this troupe has been smashing boundaries with their intense, personal work. They have come highly recommended from my fellow theater presenters across the country. Los Folkloristas On a tip from a friend in the world music scene, I looked up Los Folkloristas. Together for over 40 years, and one of the biggest proponents of Latin music, this band plays over 100 musical instruments reflecting the history of music of Central and South America, from pre-Columbian to modern. Michael Childers, Author, Author If you are into photography; this is the show for you. Michael Childers has been creating iconic images for over 40 years. Creator of over 200 magazine covers and over 150 album covers, Mr. Childers is touring a collection of portraits of famous authors that we will hang in the lobby gallery and on May 4, 2013 he will lecture on his photographic life and the collection. Spectrum Dance I have been following Donald Byrd since he arrived at Spectrum Dance in 2002. A world renowned choreographer, Mr. Byrd is also an eloquent speaker and has served as a fellow at The Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue at Harvard. Passionate about the world, dance & people he is a joy to talk with. We will be doing a spring-long residency with Mr. Byrd and members of the troupe to talk about choreography and dance, culminating in a full performance May 18, 2013.

I want variety and balance in my season. I want to be inspired. I want to laugh. I want to be moved to tears. I want to exorcise my demons. I want to experience something new and expand my world. I want to connect with the audience, my family, my community and other cultures. And because I am a rebel at heart, you can’t make me choose just five. So I would upgrade to an 8+ subscriber. Searching for Genghis Khan -

JAN 25 | Friday 7:30PM

Albert Yu-Min Lin, Research Scientist/Engineer

For centuries, historians have wondered about the location of the tomb of Genghis Khan, the legendary ruler who united Mongolia’s feuding tribes and led them on a campaign > of conquest unequalled in world history. Mongolian custom states that Genghis’s underground burial site was meant to stay hidden, and that disturbing his resting place would unleash a curse that would end the world. So the site has remained undiscovered, protected by a strong cultural taboo against disturbing what is viewed as a sacred place. Enter Albert Yu-Min Lin, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and pioneer of the use of digital technology to “crowdsource” scientific discovery. His Valley of the Khans Project uses satellite imagery, ground-penetrating radar, and remote sensors to identify and investigate archaeological sites without disturbing them—thereby maintaining respect for local customs. Lin was honored as National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “2010 Readers’ Choice Adventurer of the Year” and is a fellow of the prestigious Explorers Club.

Inside Secret Worlds -

MAR 29 | Friday 7:30PM

Jodi Cobb, Photographer

Jodi Cobb was the first female photographer almost everywhere she worked early in her career, National Geographic. > including Rather than be thwarted by the adversity she encountered— including gender bias and the dangers and discomforts of traveling a far less modern world as a single, working woman—Cobb found ingenious ways to turn these situations to her advantage. As she broke through these barriers, one after another, her career advanced. Cobb was one of the first photographers to travel across China when it reopened to the West, the first photographer to enter the hidden lives of women in Saudi Arabia, and the first woman to be named White House Photographer of the Year. She has worked in more than 60 countries, primarily the Middle East and Asia, where she was the first photographer to enter the mysterious realm of the geisha.

Del McCoury

Tribute to Bill Monroe

$46.00 - $30.00 Adult $41.00 - $27.00 St/Sr/Mil $23.00 - $15.00 Youth

OCT 26/Friday 7:30PM September 2011 marked the 100th anniversary of Bill Monroe’s birth, and not surprisingly, there have already been plenty of tributes to the Father of Bluegrass Music, with more still to come. But when listeners turn to Old Memories: The Songs of Bill Monroe—what they hear won’t be the result of a carefully crafted campaign, but the outcome of a decision that was as spontaneous as it was inevitable—because for Del McCoury, Bill Monroe’s legacy isn’t just a matter of history, but something that’s as immediate and personal as the guitar he picks up every time he gets ready to play. “What each song has in common is an incomparable authenticity, bestowed in equal measure by Del McCoury’s personal connection to Monroe and his music, and by his unalloyed musical integrity.” —American Music Channel

ENSURE A FUTURE FOR THE ARTS

FRIENDS

OVATION SOCIETY

The Friends of the Washington Center are people just like you. For over 25 years the Center has been a part of the South Sound community and, like all non-profit arts organizations, we cannot exist on the strength of ticket sales and rentals alone. We need the help of community members who love the arts, culture, and community that the Washington Center helps foster. Your Friends membership will ensure the Washington Center is able to continue as a home for the arts next week, next month, next year, and in years to come.

The Ovation Society of the Washington Center for the Performing Arts has been formed to honor and recognize the generous Friends who remember the Center in their estate plans. To become a part of this esteemed group, you can provide for the Center in your will or name us as the beneficiary of a trust, life insurance policy, or annuity. Your gift will ensure that the Center continues to provide the exceptional quality of art and performance you have enjoyed, well into the future. Your gift provides a lasting legacy for the community, bringing the mission and spirit of the Washington Center to future generations.

In addition to helping support the Center’s regular season programming, your Friends contribution helps us provide an affordable, well-equipped and maintained performing arts facility for dozens of local arts organizations. As one of the only available local venues, it is increasingly important that the Center is able to help keep costs low for these communitybased groups. Your support of the Center gives us the artistic freedom to present a broad selection of national and international performances, bringing world-class music, dance, theater, film, and guest speakers to the South Sound region. Not only does your support help bring the community together through art, your generous donation affords you exclusive privileges, including program recognition, complimentary ticket exchanges, priority seating, and more!

Liberty Lounge Our Liberty Lounge was designed for Friends contributing at the Patron level or higher. Named after the original theater that existed on the current site of the Washington Center, the Liberty Lounge is open for nearly all regular Washington Center season performances before the show and at intermission. Come in, hang up your coat, and have a drink from our full-service no-host bar.

Directors Circle The Washington Center Director’s Circle is comprised of donors who have given $1,500 and above. The Director’s Circle provides critical support for the Center, and was created for those individuals whose resources allow them to dedicate their support to the health and vitality of the arts in our community. As a Director’s Circle member, you receive exclusive benefits.

Artistic Endowment The Washington Center was born from the belief that a regional performing arts center is fundamental to the cultural pursuits of our community, and providing access to the arts in a way that aims to enrich the lives of its patrons is our primary goal. The Center recognizes a need in our community for diverse opportunities in arts education and cultural outreach as essential to achieving our aims, and we are committed to providing a distinctive cultural experience and connecting the community with new and innovative artistic expression. The Washington Center for the Performing Arts Artistic Endowment fund is a unique, permanent fund that will provide our community greater access to the arts, increase arts education funding, encourage collaboration between local arts and culture organizations, and, by accomplishing these goals, strengthen the cultural fabric of our community. As an arts leader in the South Puget Sound region with committed staff and board leadership, the Center is uniquely positioned and prepared to develop, maintain, and utilize this permanent endowment fund. The endowment accepts gifts of cash, stock and real estate, charitable remainder trusts, bequests, or other planned gifts. Individual endowments may be paid over a period of several years. As always, your gift is tax deductible. Your gift provides greater funding stability for the organization by augmenting annual giving and helping the Center fulfill its mission to serve as the primary connection between the encouragement and development of cultural horizons in the South Puget Sound area.

For more information about how you can help us ensure a future for the arts, please contact Development Director Patrick Rofe at (360) 753-8585 x102, or at profe@washingtoncenter.org www.washingtoncenter.org |

Many of today’s great performers started their careers with Young Concert Artists—Dawn Upshaw, Emanuel Ax, Eugenia Zukerman, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, Olympia’s internationally rising star Charlie Albright, and last season’s New Frontiers performer Christopher O’Riley. January/February The Marvelous Biology and Beauty of Feathers. Chris Maynard

The Center provides several discounts in order to further arts education. This provides an affordable resource for students and educational groups who may otherwise not be able to attend performances. Students of all ages receive approximately a 10% discount to most WCPA shows. Youth tickets, for those 14 and younger, are half price for most shows, and this year we have added a special $5.00 youth price to several of our performances. Finally, on the day of each event we offer our 10 Buck Tix deal to students who come to the Center in person, with their student I.D. The Center often works with educational organizations to provide group discounts to classes and clubs. If you are interested in attending a performance as an educational group, feel free to give us a call.

Chris Maynard will highlight the beauty of feathers in his highly detailed shadowbox assemblages in the gallery. Also; join us as Mr. Maynard teams up with Thor Hanson, author of Feathers: The Evolution of a Natural Miracle to speak on the natural beauty and history of feathers.

The Center created the 21st Century Masters series, now in its 17th year, with the Young Concert Artists Association in New York and brings three budding young classical musicians each year to perform as part of our season. As part of their time in the South Sound, they conduct master classes at The Center, perform recitals in local area schools, and teach workshops with area young musicians.

December Holiday Quilt Show This will be the 14th season we warm the walls of the Center gallery with our holiday quilt show with Sew Many Stars.

Many student groups and classes center projects around a performance and this allows them to use the resources available through TRL to gain a greater understanding of an artist or a performance. www.washingtoncenter.org |

Sing-A-Long-A

Sound of Music

NOV 25/Sunday 5:00PM Having started in the UK back in 1999 Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music has now become a worldwide phenomenon, playing to packed houses across the globe! It even filled the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles! Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start)…For those of you not yet converted, Singa-Long-a Sound of Music is a screening of the classic Julie Andrews musical in glorious, full-screen Technicolor, complete with subtitles so that the whole audience can sing along! The fun-filled evening starts with a vocal warm-up led by your host for the night, who will also take you through your complimentary ‘magic moments pack’ containing various props to be used at strategic points throughout the show. Then of course there is the famous fancydress competition in which everyone who has come in costume is invited onto the stage to show off their fantastic tailoring skills. And the more venues they play, the more elaborate the costumes get. So get those vocal chords warmed up, cut up those chintz curtains and hurry down for another dose of the international smash-hit show!

Aida

la traviata Giuseppe Verdi

Giuseppe Verdi

This exciting open-air staging of Aida in beautiful High-Definition performed at St. Margarethen took place amidst the intoxicating scenery of the rustically romantic Roman quarry. The Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria counts as one of Europe’s most important open-air festivals and over 200,000 opera lovers from all over the world visit it annually. The story of the forbidden love between the Egyptian leader Radames and the beautiful Ethiopian princess Aida was originally commissioned for the opening of the Cairo opera house, which formed part of the celebrations surrounding the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871. This is an opera of epic proportions with horses and elephants on stage.

| 2012/13 Season

The open-air production of the Verdi masterpiece Nabucco staged at St. Margarethen takes place amidst the intoxicating scenery of the rustically romantic Roman quarry, which provides a unique backdrop for this opera. Nabucco tells the story of Nebuchadnezzar, ancient King of Babylon, who went mad after proclaiming himself God. It is one of the most popular works in the history of opera and was Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813-1901) break-through in 1842. The staging presented truly conforms to the spirit with more than 400 participants taking to the stage!

A fascinating production of La Traviata captured in HD at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen. Stage designer Manfred Waba sets the tragic story about the demimondaine Violetta Valéry and her admirer Alfredo Germont in an evocative replica of the Parisian Opéra Garnier. His and Robert Herzl’s unique interpretation is intelligent and effective. In the lead roles, Austria’s promising opera talent Kristiane Kaiser and JeanFrançois Borras, a French young tenor, provide for a musically and visually attractive performance. Each Show: $16.00 Adult $14.00 Military $5.00 Youth

Silent Movie Series with Dennis James, House Organist on the Mighty Andy Crow Wurlitzer Organ

Dennis James has dedicated his professional career to the continuation of the theatrical traditions of, and public interest in, the theater pipe organ. From the time he began concertizing while still in his teens, James has been at the top of the theater organ profession. He has played virtually everywhere pipe organs are to be found, from preserved movie palaces through the United States and Canada to concert halls and theaters in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Silent Movies Peek at Sex, Drugs & Religion

One of our most beloved series’ the Silent Movie Series with Dennis James is an educational and lively tribute to the movies, the stars and the studios of a bygone era.

Each Show: $16.00 Adult $14.00 Military $5.00 Youth

FEB 7, 2013 7:00PM | SEX: Louise Brooks in Pandora’s Box PANDORA’S BOX (1929) Directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst Louise Brooks became an international star with this, her first, film. Based on the opera “Lulu” by Franz Wedekind, it tells the story of a young girl who murders her lover, becomes a prostitute, and ends up a victim of Jack the Ripper. A classic of the silent cinema, directed by G. W. Pabst (1929)

MAR 7, 2013 7:00PM | DRUGS: Douglas Fairbanks, first in the short film THE Mystery of the Leaping Fish plus the feature film When The Clouds Roll By MYSTERY OF THE LEAPING FISH (1916) In this farce, nothing is sacred. Cops are lampooned. Drug addiction is comical, and our hero Coke is quite the addict. His complete and joyous dependence on these narcotics would even cause a real drug addict to take umbrage. He literally consumes mountains of cocaine, tins of opium and gives himself constant injections wherever he may be. In fact, he overcomes every situation with drugs, consuming them to increase his energies. However, Coke is a generous chap who loves to share. He also uses the drugs on his opponents to knock them silly - why not, it’s a very silly movie. WHEN THE CLOUDS ROLL BY (1919) Remembered now for swashbuckling films like Robin Hood, Douglas Fairbanks first achieved fame in a string of wildly inventive romps. Here he stars as a superstitious young man threatened by a scientist who’s out to drive him crazy. Wacky dream sequences and absurd plot twists build to a dam-busting finale in this everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink comedy including the extensive athletic stunts for which Fairbanks was famous. This slapstick farce stands among Fairbanks’ funniest films.

APR 11, 2013 7:00PM | RELIGION: Cecil B. DeMille’s The Godless Girl THE GODLESS GIRL (1928) Based on an actual event in the life of atheist leader Queen Silver, but is mostly a potboiler about how the atheist girl falls in love with a theistic man as they try to escape from prison. Of course, in the end she finds God. De Mille and his experienced crew took great pains with the picture, interviewing reformatory inmates and officials, having young female staff members go behind bars disguised as convicted criminals to observe conditions, collecting hundreds of pamphlets and books dealing with atheism, and going over floor plans and diagrams of dozens of reformatories.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. $46.00 - $30.00 Adult $41.00 - $27.00 St/Sr/Mil $23.00 - $15.00 Youth

$22.00 - $14.00 Adult $20.00 - $13.00 St/Sr/Mil $11.00 - $7.00 Youth

MAR 28/Thursday 7:30PM Cameron Carpenter is “one of the rare musicians who changes the game of his instrument… He is a smasher of cultural and classical music taboos. He is technically the most accomplished organist I have ever witnessed… And most important of all, the most musical.” – The Los Angeles Times A virtuoso composer-performer unique among keyboardists, Cameron’s approach to the organ is smashing the stereotypes of organists and organ music while generating a level of acclaim, exposure, and controversy unprecedented for an organist. His repertoire – from the complete works of J. S. Bach and Cesar Franck, to his hundreds of transcriptions of non-organ works, his original compositions, and his collaborations with jazz and pop artists – is perhaps the largest and most diverse of any organist. He is the first organist ever nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for a solo album.

Lord of the Dance APR 4/Thursday 7:30PM Described by the Los Angeles Times as a “show piece extravaganza,” Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance is a magical adventure of sight and sound that transports its audience to a mythical time and place, lifting the spirits and capturing the hearts of all who experience it. Based on Irish folklore, this classic tale of Good vs. Evil, expressed through the universal language of dance, has thrilled audiences worldwide and catapulted Irish dance to a new dimension and unprecedented worldwide acclaim. As the story unfolds, the Little Spirit travels through time to help the Lord of the Dance protect his people from the challenge of Don Dorcha, the Dark Lord. As this evil dark power challenges the hero, the incredible adventure continues, drawing its audience into a mythical universe of love, danger, and desire. As Michael says “It’s absolutely fantastic being No. 1 and we intend to stay that way.” Michael is committed to his art and to giving his audiences “The World’s Greatest Dance Show.”

“Circa have reinvented circus the way Cirque du Soleil did decades ago...but the young company is way cooler.” – The Mirror

$36.00 - $24.00 Adult $32.00 - $22.00 St/Sr/Mil $18.00 - $12.00 Youth

APR 6/Saturday 7:30PM From Brisbane, Australia comes a bold new vision of contemporary circus. A blending of bodies, light, sound and skills. A place where acrobatics and movement meld into a seamless whole and fundamentally redefine the nature of circus as spectacle. A celebration of the expressive possibilities of the human body at its extremes. Over 80 intense minutes, the performers move from highly connected acrobatic and tumbling sequences, through fast-paced intricate scenes to the hauntingly beautiful closing. Circa’s signature style is combining poetic physical beauty, extraordinary circus skills and an immersive use of sound, light and projection… to cause beauty. Where other companies tend to add elements (story, character) their work is a stripped back circus of the heart. It finds new emotional landscapes inside what is generally considered to be a spectacle.
