Dear Friends of the Arts, “Welcoming, professional, eclectic, jewel, delightful, outstanding, convenient, classy.” These are just a few of the words used by patrons to describe The Washington Center last year in an audience survey. Of all of the answers, my favorite was “home”. With one year as Executive Director under my belt, The Center and this community have definitely become my home. We sincerely hope that you always feel welcome at The Center and feel the ownership of it as YOUR home for live entertainment in our region. Within this brochure, you will find a variety of performances that were specially selected to provide a wide range of theatrical experiences at The Center. From national touring musicals to regional jazz, and harmonic folk to unforgettable comedy, there truly is something for everyone. Participants and audience members alike have been impacted by the unique performances here at The Center, and we look forward to bringing you memories from the 2014-15 season.
See you at The Center
—Jill Barnes, Executive Director

The von Trapps
OCT 10/Friday 7:30PM
You cannot find another name as universally beloved as von Trapp. The story of the family who escaped Austria, moved to the United States, and toured the world singing for two decades has inspired generations since the film The Sound of Music was released in 1965. The story continues as the great-grandchildren of Captain and Maria von Trapp take up the family tradition anew. Meet Sofi, Melanie, Amanda, and August von Trapp, four siblings that, for the last 12 years, have been singing on stages around the world to critical acclaim and packed houses. After hosting them with Pink Martini in April 2014, we are tickled to be bringing the von Trapps back to Olympia for a solo show. A: $54, B: $42, C: $32 2014/15 Season | 2
Seth Lepore Losing My Religion: Confessions of a New Age Refugee
OCT 16/Thursday 7:30PM This one-man tour de force is a humorous, ironic and sardonic look at what Lepore describes as “the blurry line between self-help and faith.” Based on his own spiritual journey, which saw him leave the Catholic Church as a teenager and meander for over 20 years through Buddhism and a host of other -isms, the monologue juxtaposes wickedly funny and insightful characterizations of the people he has met along the way with thoughtful commentary on his own spiritual seeking. Black Box Theater: $27
Capitol Steps OCT 25/Saturday 7:30PM Always a crowd pleaser, the Capitol Steps are sure to get both sides of the aisle laughing as they satirize current political affairs. Performing songs from their latest album, How to Succeed in Congress Without Really Trying, they put the “mock” in democracy! A: $52, B: $45, C: $35

Maria Joyner-Wulf
NOV 14/Friday 8:00PM
JAN 23/Friday 8:00PM
Upon moving to Olympia in 1992, Betsy anticipated a career in environmental sciences and something close to living off the land. But she found herself taken in by the rich music scene. Over the years she has established herself as a percussionist, vocalist, lyricist and composer and has collaborated with bands such as Bevy, Planetary People, Mucho Gusto, Artesian Rumble Arkestra, Samba Olywa, Mugomboo, Choro Tomorrow and Momenti Rubati. Her compositional voice is much like her singing: smooth, fresh, original and always from the heart.
Maria Joyner-Wulf is an Olympia based drummer, multi-instrumentalist and music educator. A native of the northwest, Maria grew up in Aberdeen and fell in love with music at an early age. Throughout her performance career she has made appearances on stages across the country including New York City and the Kennedy Center. Since settling back in the northwest Maria has made a name for herself both as a bandleader and sideman including performing with and directing the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra and KPLU’s School of Jazz.

9th Annual Silent MOVIE Series
with Dennis James, House Organist on the Mighty Andy Crow Wurlitzer Organ Featuring Vocalists Connie Corrick and Hugh Hastings
The women who populated the silent screen had a decidedly different quality than any movie stars since. This series celebrates the way they exemplified, without saying a word, a particular mixture of wit, grace and classic radiance. It’s tempting to credit their allure to some abstract mystique, but even a single frame of film from a Garbo or Normand vehicle speaks for itself. Sure, these ladies were unspeakably gorgeous and infused every amazing thing they wore with glamor, but their charm was no mystery--they knew what to do in front of a camera, how to grow into each character, and how to win the hearts of their audiences with the subtlest gesture or expression.

JAN 18/Sunday 2:00PM
FEB 22/Sunday 2:00PM
APR 12/Sunday 2:00PM
A 1920 romantic drama directed by D. W. Griffith and starring Lillian Gish, this is one of four film adaptations of the 19th century play Way Down East by Lottie Blair Parker. Griffith’s version is particularly remembered for its exciting climax in which Gish’s character is rescued from doom on an icy river.
The film is a lighthearted look at Hollywood at the end of the silent film era (it was released the year after breakthrough talking picture The Jazz Singer), and is considered Marion Davies’ best role.
Taking full advantage of the winning romantic team of Greta Garbo and John Gilbert , this drama was based on Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novel Anna Karenina. The publicity campaign for the film was one of the largest to date, and the title was changed from the original, Heat.
Each Show: $20

The Washington Center is committed to being Your Center for the Arts in the South Puget Sound - and our commitment centers around education. The Washington Center prides itself on providing educational opportunities to enhance student learning. Our initiative – NEXT GENERATION - consolidates our efforts. • Students of all ages receive approximately a 10% discount to most WCPA shows. • Youth tickets, for 14 and under, are half price for most shows. • We have a special $5.00 youth price to select performances. • On the day of each event we offer $10 Student Rush tickets to students who come to The Center in person with their student I.D. • The Center works with educational organizations to provide group discounts to classes and clubs. If you are interested in attending a performance as an educational group, please call our Box Office. We annually host an “Instrument Petting Zoo” in conjunction with the Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO) during the Spring ArtsWalk, where kids and adults can come to the theater free of charge and see, touch, and play the instruments of their choice. The Center also works with Timberland Regional Library, a rural Library District servicing 7,000 square miles through 27 community libraries. All Washington Center presented performances are researched by TRL and a quarterly Resource Guide is created so students interested in a study guide of upcoming performances can find extended, thorough materials. Many student groups and classes center projects around a performance and this allows them to use the resources available through TRL to gain a greater understanding of an artist or a performance.
