Chairmen’s Reports JOHN FAWCETT FOUNDATION (AUSTRALIA)
W
hat a year 2017 was.
Board members and supporters of our Foundation were deeply saddened by the loss of our founder, John Fawcett AM, in September whilst undergoing medical treatment in Perth. (Please see the Tribute to John Fawcett appearing in this Annual Report.) Earlier in the year, in May, we were shocked to hear of the death of Roger Hussey, our Vice Chairman, who suffered a freak accident whilst holidaying in Thailand. May they rest in peace, carrying with them the knowledge that their skills, humanitarian activities and great affection for the people of Bali resulted in better lives for many thousands of people. The activities of the Foundation will carry on despite these losses.
The most important people in the Foundation are our staff. Their dedication to the tasks at hand needs to be observed to appreciate the volume of work that they carry out, almost always with a smile on their faces and never a trace of anger or disappointment. Medical personnel and their support staff of technicians and drivers, administrative staff, domestic staff and gardeners all work together as a team. They cover for each other when there are injuries or sickness, with never a complaint. As you will read elsewhere in the Annual Report we enjoyed a most satisfactory year statistically. Donations continued to roll in (there will never be too many), and cataract operations and other eye-care requirement numbers were sustained and increased, as were prosthetic eye procedures. Children’s corrective surgery operations decreased a little due to a heavy focus on sight restoration activities. It is appropriate again to express, on behalf of our patients, sincere gratitude to all our donors, supporters, volunteers and the Indonesian Government. Our ability to continue to provide assistance, free of charge to our patients, is dependent on the strong support that we receive and we hope that we will continue

to receive. If any of you travel to Bali please feel free to contact the Bali office to arrange a visit to our headquarters. You will be warmly welcomed, and arrangements can be made for you to accompany our team on a village visit where you will see firsthand the excellent manner in which they work. Two new Board members were provisionally appointed during the year - Gede Bingin, our Indonesian Manager, and Norbert Hoegerl OAM, a Melbourne-based microscope expert and longstanding supporter. Attendees at our AGM will be asked to confirm the appointments. My personal thanks to my fellow Board members for their tireless efforts during the year and these thanks extend to Penny Lane, our Australian/Indonesian Coordinator. Their knowledge, experience and humanitarian qualities make them invaluable ambassadors for our Foundation. Thanks also to our wives and partners. Their support and assistance goes a long way towards our ability as a group to provide assistance to our needy neighbours in Indonesia.

JOHN FAWCETT FOUNDATION (INDONESIA)
I
t is again with pride and pleasure that I report to you for the second year after commencing as Chairman of the John Fawcett Foundation Indonesia. The year 2017 was another successful year that continued to focus on our core activities and achieved significant results, despite being one of the most challenging years for the Foundation. With profound sadness we lost a staff member, Sudaryono; JFF Board member and Vice-Chairman, Roger Hussey; and the great loss of our Founder, John Fawcett. Their dedication for the humanitarian cause will always remain with us. In September 2017, our Founding Father, Pak John Fawcett departed, leaving us with his legacy. He left us with a strong and esteemed Foundation, We, the Balinese and Indonesians will greatly miss him. For the Balinese, who received the best gift that God gave us through
a giant man with a big heart, Pak John or “Dokter John”, gratitude is not enough. With his courage, passion and dedication to serve humanity, he is the role model of a true humanitarian. Therefore, everyone at JFF wants to be sure to keep John’s vision alive, and we shall be carrying the same passion and dedication for the humanitarian work. All our staff members are using their time and efforts together to make sure all committed programs and future plans are conducted successfully. Their good spirits, great enthusiasm, happy demeanour, and commitment positively infect the work, resulting in thousands of people being enabled to see colours and the world again. Our results for 2017 reflect this enthusiastic spirit − the number of cataract operations we performed over the year compared to the previous year represented a 45% increase. This was mainly due to our successful offshore program, with a total 18 offshore programs throughout the year. This also reflects the strength of our relationships and partnerships with the government and the public. One of the real highlights of the year was the successful participation in World Sight Day held in Situbondo, East Java, in October. There is still just so much to be done, so many underprivileged people that require our assistance,
and many areas that still eagerly await more regular servicing, by bringing the service closer to the needy. It is not only mobile eye units but also portable medical equipment that are needed for reaching the distant isolated islands of Indonesia. The ability to provide increased access to high-quality eye care and sight restoration to these isolated people will always be critically dependent and reliant upon you, our benefactors, and our ability to raise sufficient funding to support existing efforts that, hopefully, allow us to further expand our work. The Prosthetic Eye Program lifted its capacity with many children and young people receiving prosthetic eyes. This program not only gives the confidence to the patients; it also gives them dignity. The numbers operated in our Children’s Corrective Surgery decreased in 2017, mainly due to our greater focus on the Sight Restoration Program. We thank all our supporters, donors and partners for your kind and valuable contributions; your generosity and support enable us to continue our work. Thanks also to the Board members of the John Fawcett Foundation Australia, UK and Indonesia and special thanks to all the staff.

Tribute to Our Founder, John Fawcett
I
n the words of Scott Bevan, Australian Journalist who wrote John’s biography Water From the Moon, on hearing of John Fawcett’s death … “Who and what did the world lose when John died in September 2017 at the age of 85? The Balinese lost their beloved ‘Mr John’. Australians lost a gentle unofficial diplomat, who brought our neighbour closer in profound ways. Many of those close to him lost a mentor. Now John’s eyes are closed, but about 50,000 windows to his soul remain open. For his vision lives on, through the lives of all those former patients.” John Fawcett, founder of The John Fawcett Foundation, established an organisation that has directly and positively affected the lives
of well over a million people. Widely known in Bali as ‘Dr John’, his assistance to those in less fortunate circumstances earned him the love of the Balinese people and the respect of those in government circles. With the Foundation’s programs moving offshore from Bali to other islands, the respect for John’s name and that of his Foundation have expanded throughout the Indonesian archipelago. John Fawcett was a unique individual, totally dedicated to his humanitarian work, and an inspiration to all who met him. He had the ability to gather about him a team who took on the spirit that he imparted, and this has built the Foundation into the strong organisation it is today. The team in Bali, the Board in Australia and the Trustees in the
United Kingdom, are committed to continue with John’s work and will carry with them the strong memory of his inspiration and dedication. As Scott Bevan reminded us, John espoused the philosophy: “Things happen in life that make you feel ‘that’s got to be the end’. But it’s not. No one can take away the happy memories of what has been, but it doesn’t mean you don’t open the door and step through to what is next.” What is next for the Foundation will happen without its founder, its mentor, but the inspiration that John gave will carry the team forward to achieve even greater things in his name. Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention B
lindness prevention and cataract surgery is an ongoing challenge in countries like Indonesia, a challenge our Foundation has taken on and will continue into the future. With over four million needlessly blind in this country
and over eight million visually impaired, the challenge is a big one. The social and economic costs of these large numbers are enormous, not to mention the personal difficulties of the blind individuals and those who care for them.
JFF’S SIGHT RESTORATION AND BLINDNESS PREVENTION PROJECT JFF’s signature mobile eye clinics take the surgery and service to the people, offering free eye screening, glasses, eye drops and cataract

REACHING REMOTE COMMUNITIES An ever-increasing amount of JFF’s work is now happening outside Bali. The need in other islands is acute, with high incidences of poverty, lack of access to specialist medical facilities and high levels
of population. We find greater numbers of people blind with cataracts in these areas than in Bali where JFF’s Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project has been active for 26 years.
JFF is fortunate to have a unique partnership with the Indonesian AirForce which transports our team, equipment and mobile clinic to remote parts of Indonesia to reach even more people in need.
The JFF team visit one of the remote villages in Papua, accessible only by boat.

In 2017 JFF’s prosthetic eye technician, Wayan Wijaya, made artificial eyes for 91 patients. Each prosthetic eye is custommade by hand for the patients
so that they look as natural as possible and move with the other eye, so much so that it is difficult to detect which is the artificial eye and which is the real eye.

his Program was initiated in 1996 by John Fawcett and Mr Chris Brown who was a teacher of Indonesian at Helena College, Perth, at that time. The plan was to select two Balinese students who had just completed their secondary schooling in Bali and send them to Helena College for one term to experience life in Australia and to learn English and Computing, as well assisting in the
26
Indonesian language and culture classes. Since 1996, 35 students have participated in this Program, returning to their island community enriched by the experience. In 2017 19-year-old Ni Nengah Meryandiani and 18-yearold I Nyoman Tatwa Surya Dewata were given the opportunity to go to Helena College.

Technology Transfer and Volunteers MAINTAINING QUALITY OF SURGERY AND SERVICE JFF’s priority is to maintain the highest possible quality of treatment to all recipients of its assistance. Surgeons and other medical personnel working in our programs are assessed and if necessary given training in the special surgical techniques we use. This is possible through the invaluable contributions to JFF’s humanitarian work that are
28
made by the many volunteer medical specialists from Australia who travel to Bali at their own expense to pass on their skills and knowledge to the Indonesian medical personnel who work in our projects. JFF is very pleased to welcome Dr Anthony Moriarty, MA FRCS FRCOphth, as a consulting ophthalmologist to the
Foundation. Tony made three extended visits to Bali in 2017, joining the team on field trips, including the World Sight Day program in Situbondo in October, and participating in the International Ophthalmology Symposium held in Bali in early December.

INTERNATIONAL OPHTHALMOLOGY SYMPOSIUM - IOS In collaboration with The John Fawcett Foundation, Sanglah Hospital and Udayana University Medical Faculty, the Bali branch of the Indonesian Ophthalmologists’ Association (PERDAMI Bali) held its second International Symposium to increase knowledge and improve the skills of ophthalmologists in Indonesia. The focus topic was ‘Updates in Ocular Manifestation of

Malignancy, Infection-Immunology and Metabolic Diseases’. The threatened imminent eruption of Gunung Agung prevented many participants attending the Symposium in person, but national and international links were set up to enable it to proceed so that more than 100 ophthalmologists and registrars participated in the two-day symposium and workshops.
Volunteer ophthalmologists of the Foundation who participated in this symposium were Dr Anthony Moriarty (UK), Professor David Mackey (Australia) and Professor Stephanie Watson (Australia), while JFF’s staff, Gede Bingin, Wayan Helmy, Nyoman Wardana and Susi provided essential support services.
