Nexus World housing was a project initiated by Arata Isozaki. With the aim of creating a new urban lifestyle, a more organized way of living, he invited 7 different architects to make a design contribution - amongst them Rem Koolhaas (OMA). Their contribution consists of two blocks, each three stories high. With 24 housing units all together, the blocks explore a way of living in blocks - while still maintain a feeling of external connection, easy accessibility and high amount of privacy. Entering the housing happens through a longer transition between public and private. First lead into a semipublic-forecourt placed underneath the blocks, the inhabitant are subsequently allowed into a private courtyard, which rises vertically and allows for light and air to reach each floor of the housing. Each apartment is based on a about 5 x 7public m squares stacked on top of each Diagram (plan): / semi-public / private other, and with the courtyard 5 x 6 m centered into the block and open to the sky. The waved outer walls gives variations in the different appartment sizes. A staircase leads to the second floor - the most private part of the house, containing the individual rooms and sleeping units. Successively with the transition to the living space on the third floor the rooms open up and reunite with the openness of the courtyard. With the use of screens and curtains to generate different configurations of inside and outside space, private and public - the third floor introduces a more traditional Japanese approach to architecture. Three successive waves of metal defines the rooftops and allows for a view and exterior stay protected from a clear sight from the Isozaki twintowers, two skyscrapers also part of the nexus project.
