Fayetteville Dogwood Festival The Fayetteville Dogwood Festival is a non-profit organization committed to providing a variety of family centered activities held in downtown Fayetteville for nearly 35 years. In addition to the annual signature spring festival, Fayetteville Dogwood Festival also produces Cumberland County’s largest Pageant, the Dogwood Fall Festival and Fayetteville After 5.

Celebrate life “down on the farm” with a fun-filled day of history in the Heritage Garden Complex, which includes the Farm House, General Store, Tobacco Barn and more. Come learn how to churn butter the ol’ fashioned way.

Embrace the outdoors while enjoying the Garden’s winter beauty and creating a cherished holiday memory with family and friends. Attractions and festivities include a synchronized show of lights and music shimmering over the Cypress Pond, a mile-long stroll featuring thousands of lights aglow, photos with Santa (on select evenings), S’mores roasting over the fire pit and free crafts for children. NATURE CONNECTS® Art with Lego® Bricks Exhibit September 30, 2016 - January 8, 2017 Inspired by nature and built by artist Sean Kenney with over 500,000 colorful LEGO® bricks, the exhibit features larger-than-life sculptures representing the complex and amazing network that interconnects all living things on Earth. Displayed throughout the Garden, with interpretative signage featuring messages to connect children with the natural world, Nature Connects® is a stimulating experience of discovery, exploration and imagination. Adding to the fun are activities for all ages, hands-on building stations and design competitions.

Carved jack-o’-lanterns, lights and luminaria glow and light the pathways of the Garden in celebration of Halloween. Costume contests, hands-on crafts, treats and candy are part of the indoor and outdoor activities.

National Public Garden Day and Spring Plant Sale May 12 - 14, 2017 Celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with the perfect opportunity to bring your mom to the Garden.

The Spring Plant Sale offers a selection of interesting plants to add a splash of color to your garden, deck, front porch or patio.

With its horse-drawn carriages, artisans, carolers, candlelight procession and fireworks, this event has become a highlight of the holiday season.

Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum There’s something for everyone – from history enthusiasts to families looking for fun – at this unique museum, housed in a restored 1890 railroad depot.

Local history exhibits highlight people, events and places that impacted this area. To transport you back in time, there’s the model train room, vintage cars and interactive steamboat exhibit. The Museum also hosts a downtown farmers market.

2017 marks the 150 anniversary of what is now Fayetteville State University. With the distinction of being the second state-supported school in North Carolina and the first statesponsored institution for the education of African-American teachers in the South, FSU has so much history. Learn more about the founders and various early locations of this historically black college. See why this community has so much “Bronco” pride!

Downtown comes to life with an open-air market for local farmers and crafters, hosted on the grounds of the Museum every Wednesday and Saturday. Fresh, locally grown vegetables and fruits, eggs, honey, and other farm products are offered for sale, along with plants, flowers, pottery, tea, coffee, soap, candles, jewelry and other handcrafted products. Peak market season runs from April through December, but a number of vendors participate year-round.

The Market House, which is Cumberland County’s only National Historic Landmark, is open to the public on 4th Fridays from 6 to 10 p.m. Explore the exhibit A View from the Square: A History of Downtown Fayetteville, which features dozens of historic images and information about the community. In addition to this permanent exhibit, view a different local history exhibit each month.

Established in 1817, Saint John’s Episcopal Church has had a significant impact on the Fayetteville community over the past 200 years. Held in partnership with Saint John’s, this exhibit explores the rich history of the church. It includes fascinating artifacts and examines the unique architecture, stained glass windows and symbolism in the church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most important, the exhibit addresses the impact the church has made beyond its congregation.

Fayetteville “Over There” July 2017 This exhibit commemorates the centennial of the United States’ participation in the “Great War.” Although World War I began in Europe in 1914, America did not enter until the spring of 1917. From deep in the trenches to hard work on the home front, Fayetteville and Cumberland County made every effort to return the favor of the town’s namesake, the Marquis de Lafayette – the Frenchman who fought valiantly beside our troops in the Revolutionary War.

Founded in 1956, the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra has grown to become a symphony of significant renown. St. John’s Episcopal Church For this chamber concert, FSO musicians perform Handel’s ever popular Water Music. Originally composed to be performed on the River Thames for King George I in 1717, this composition includes several well known tunes that are a joy to listen to.

Huff Concert Hall, Methodist University Dina Gilbert, Guest Conductor To close out the season, the FSO – led by Dina Gilbert, Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal – honors our military and civil servants. The special performance features classical and popular works dedicated to heroism, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica.”

Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex

Permanent Exhibits Southeastern North Carolina Regional History Experience the history of this region with exhibits that range from Native Americans to an early 20th century general store.

Kids’ activities include Backpack Buddies, History Ranger activity sheet and Teaching Corners.

1897 Poe House Tour the home of an affluent Fayetteville family and learn about life in the early 20th century, including the roles of women and children, African-American history and technological and social changes that shaped the era.

Arsenal Park One of five arsenals commissioned by the U.S. government to expand defenses after the War of 1812, the Fayetteville arsenal became the property of the new Confederate States of America during the Civil War. It was destroyed in 1865 by Union troops under the command of General Sherman, but visitors today can explore the remaining historic ruins.

Special Events & Programs Festival of Yesteryear

Saturday, September 10, 2016 • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

A celebration of early America, focusing on the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods, with re-enactors depicting various aspects of daily life.

Hallowe’en Revels Includes nighttime tours of the 1897 Poe House and a day-long Trick or Treat event the Saturday before Halloween.

Holiday Jubilee Sunday, December 4, 2016 1 - 5 p.m.

Special Exhibit Parlor to Parlor: Funeral Traditions of the Cape Fear, 1850-1950 Ends December 31, 2016 Examines changing funerary practices during this period in North Carolina. In conjunction with the exhibit, (beginning October 1), the 1897 Poe House will be dressed out in mourning traditions, including the parlor set up for a funeral.
