What Kind of Programs are in this Directory? Artists of all artistic and academic disciplines are available in this directory. Use the matrix on pages 2 and 3, as well as the individual artist pages, to help you find: appropriate grade levels, as well as the artistic and academic discipline(s) offered by each artist. Multiple program options are available: Performance/Assembly, Workshops and/or Residencies:

Assembly Performances and Workshops Assembly performances vary, but typically involve an artist or artist group performing for an audience. In a workshop, an artist or artist group will work with a classroom or small group for a single session. Many workshops are offered only in conjunction with a performance.

Grant Funding: Schools can apply for funds to cover up to half (50%) of the Artist’s Fee.

Artist Residencies Residencies may vary, but generally last one week. A residency should be an ongoing relationship with the same students each day throughout the residency. The artist is expected to coordinate with the curriculum objectives of the teacher or school.

Grant Funding: The Arts Council recognizes the benefits of long-term contact with students in a residency setting. As such, the Arts Council will provide two-thirds (approx. 66%) of the artist’s fee.

New to this? Here are some tips on ways to take care of your visiting artist and make the most of your AIS experience: 1.

Select your artists using the Arts Council’s AIS Directory as your guide. For more details, call the Arts Council at 323-1776 to discuss which artists would be best for your school’s cultural arts program or review of the artist’s website..

Make sure you understand the commitment before you sign the contract between the Arts Council, the school and the visiting artist. Please call the Arts Council for any assistance you may need.

The artists will contact the schools to schedule dates/times for their visits to the schools. They will contact the principal and/or the designated school liason. All scheduled visits and/or changes to the schedules must be reported to the Arts Council by the artists and the schools.

Pay the Arts Council on time as specified in the contract; artists expect and need their checks on time. You are requesting a Matching Grant, the schools pay the Arts Council and the Arts Council pays the artists.

For performances, workshops and residencies, certified teachers must be in attendance with the students. The artists are there to enhance learning, not to handle discipline and other normal classroom details. There should be one (1) certified teacher per 25-30 students present at all times.

Provide water, juice or soft drinks available before, during or after the programs. Just ask the artists their preference – it will be appreciated.

Find out the technical requirements – they may be minimal, but very important to the artists and to the audiences.

Decide who will briefly introduce the artist to the audience. This person should also acknowledge the Arts Council and the matching grant as stated in the contract. This person should be available to supervise the program and assist the artist if necessary.

It is good PR for the schools to inform their parents and the public about the “great things” happening in the schools. So, call the local newspaper, put the events in your school newsletter and get the word out as much as possible.

ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Smart Arts for Cool Kids – Silver Trout offers a full-fledged stage performance blending four major art forms: Story telling, Puppetry, Poetry and Music – emphasizing the theme of “So many ways to share a story.” The concert includes an original puppet fable, “The Gardener,” performed to live original music on the hammered dulcimer as well as original and traditional songs, original stories, various puppet characters and instrumental music played on seven different instruments. Throughout each age appropriate performance, the students are actively involved and engaged as they join in a sit-down square dance, keep rhythms, volunteer to come onto the stage and respond to artists’ prompts. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Both Susana and Timmy Abell have earned stellar reputations through many years of work in schools. Susana spent seven years as one of New Jersey’s most sought after teaching artists, with support from Carnegie Hall and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Timmy has been a North Carolina touring and recording artist for 25 years, presenting educational concerts and workshops in 21 states. Silver Trout Arts is a combined effort of their many talents.

RESIDENCY: One Day Residency – This arts infusion brings Susana and Timmy into your school for a full day, beginning with school performances (K-2 & 3-5 or K-5) followed by in-depth, hands-on workshops with each artist for selected classes. The day is completed with an evening family performance, which can be arranged as a PTA fundraiser. Five Day Residency – This five-day residency includes performances for the entire school (K-2 & 3-5), then four core groups (four selected classes) meet each day for five days with either Susana in puppetry arts or Timmy in songwriting for a truly in-depth arts experience. African American Dance Ensemble ABOUT THE ARTISTS: The African American Dance Ensemble, or most notably called AADE was founded in 1984 by the incomparable and world renowned Dr. Charles “Chuck” Davis. We have travelled to Africa and the African Diaspora to learn and hone our craft. Our music, dance and songs are authentic and are indigenous to the Gambia, West Africa and parts beyond. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: The AADE specializes in Authentic African and African American Dance and culture through choreography and music styles along with the traditional attire. We focus on anti bullying, health and wellness and geography and cultural lessons through what we call “EDUTAINING”. Lloyd Arneach ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lloyd Arneach was born and reared on the Cherokee Reservation in NC where he learned his first legends from two storytelling uncles. Lloyd’s stories range from the “Old Stories” of the Cherokee to stories of contemporary Native Americans. Lloyd lectures on Cherokee history and culture and tells stories of Native history from other tribes. His style is humorous, informative, and extremely moving. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Storytelling performances for kindergarten to high school and families include a question and answer session when time allows. Performances for elementary students focus on the Cherokee traditional tales. Performances for middle school, high school and adult audiences focus on traditional tales and contemporary and historical stories of the Cherokee and other Native tribes. “The Secret Life of Walter Manny” (K-6) is the story of a young hero-in-training with an overactive imagination that gets him in—and out of—trouble. The show contains themes of self-control and respect for others.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Trent Arterberry is an award-winning performer whose unique brand of physical theatre variously combines masterful mime, poignant monologue, comedic characters and dramatic narratives. Trained by Marcel Marceau, Arterberry’s innovative use of sound, music, and special effects make his mime shows entertaining and accessible to wide-ranging audiences. Trent offers three different one-man shows for both elementary and secondary populations.

Asian Dance & Theatre by Surapsari ABOUT THE ARTIST: Surapsari is an accomplished performing artist specializing in dance, theatre and shadow puppetry from the Indonesian island of Bali and India. Her Balinese performing arts company, Purnama Sari, is featured in the Florida State Touring Roster. Surapsari has performed in the US, Mexico, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia for a variety of audiences. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Mask Dance & Drama from Bali (K-12): Learn about Balinese culture through exotic mask dances and audience participatory dance-drama, presented in authentic costumes. This entertaining program promotes students’ interest in the world and fosters their respect for different cultures. Balinese Shadow Puppet Theatre (K-5): Magical Balinese folktales and Hindu epic presented in otherworldly shadow puppet theatre. In addition, K-2 students review basic shapes in shadow theatre, while grade 3-5 students learn about Bali. Dance and Drama from India (K-12): Lively storytelling through Bharatanatyam, the 2000 year old dance from India. Learn symbolic hand gestures called mudra. Take part in a dancedrama based in the Ramayana, the 2000 year old Hindu epic. WORKSHOPS: Shadow Puppet Workshop (PK-5): Students will first learn how shadow puppets are made in Bali, where shadow puppet theatre has been popular entertainment for centuries. Students will then create their own puppets and then the experiment with puppets, light and screen to create different shadow effects. This is a great project for the science of light and shadow. Indian Dance Workshop (K-12): Learn the basics of Bharatanatyam, the oldest Indian dance style that has been in existence for approximately 2,000 years. Middle and high school students will also compare Bharatanatyam with Western dance styles such as ballet, modern and hip-hop. Beast ABOUT THE ARTISTS: The Beast is dedicated to education and cultural outreach. The group has developed workshops on creativity, improvisation, and the history of African-American music based on the Blackademics Hip Hop curriculum founded by emcee Pierce Freelon. Pierce Freelon is an adjunct professor of African American Studies at UNC Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University. He earned his BA in African American Studies and is MA in Pan African Studies at UNC and Syracuse, respectively. Pianist Eric Hirsh, Drummer Stephen Coffman and Bassist Peter Kimosh all earned music degrees from UNC with a focus on Jazz Studies. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: SANKOFA: African American Music from Spirituals to Hip Hop: Students will learn elements of Storytelling, Improvisation and Call and Response in American Music. A brilliant mix of TedTalk-style interactive lecture with an exciting live band, SANKOFA educates and entertains. He marvels at all the ways the Laws of Motion have been used by mankind, especially space travel during the last 60 years. 2nd program: “Otto von Guericke- The Inventor of NOTHING.” I, portraying Otto von Guericke, was one of the first “citizen scientist.” Students help Otto do some of his famous experiments that proved you could have a vacuum. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Burning Coal’s SHAKESCENES performance aims to demystify Shakespeare and his works for elementary, middle, and high school students. In this 50-minute performance, Burning Coal’s Director of Education debunks the myths surrounding Shakespeare and his plays (they aren’t old, boring, or hard to understand!) through fun, interactive, scholarly narration. This is then supplemented by scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays performed by Burning Coal’s professional acting troupe. Kathryn Gauldin ABOUT THE ARTIST: Kathryn Gauldin has always been entangled with yarns, threads, fabrics and other weavable objects. Heading to college, she studied painting and printmaking, then an intensive study of proper weaving and dyeing techniques. Her work has been on exhibition, created in schools and public events plus taken on the road in outreach programs throughout the greater North Carolina area. She also enjoys creating handwoven, hand-dyed wearable art, fabrics and sculptural fiberart in her studio between artistic adventures. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: A presentation for assembly includes a history of fabric in North Carolina, in culture and how woven structures are used in everyday life. After the presentation, Kathryn will share how she creates her woven fabrics and will include several garments for selected students and/or staff to model. Gregg Gelb Jazz Quartet ABOUT THE ARTIST: GREGG GELB, D.M.A., M.M., B.M; awarded the NC Arts Council 1997 Jazz Fellowship. Visiting Artist in the NC Community Colleges from 1987-91. Since ’91 Gregg’s groups have given many performances in NC schools. RESIDENCY: Faces of Africa: A Cultural Journey (7) is a three-day residency designed to supplement the seventh grade curriculum. Each class visits a “live” exhibit, the center of which is the drum circle. The exhibit includes pictures of real people from four of the countries from which the drums originated (Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast); information (flags, population, land area, languages, ethnic groups, etc.); and artifacts which include carvings, masks, instruments, fabrics, beads, baskets and gourds. After a 30 minute “treasure hunt” in the exhibit, the class sits down for 30 minutes in the circle, where each student will have a hands-on drumming experience! On the third day, The Healing Force performs The Rhythm of the Drum. Faces of Africa (K-5) for elementary school is a variation of Faces of Africa: A Cultural Journey. During this 3-day residency, students visit a large exhibit which is arranged in nine stations (which include baskets, carvings, toys, pictures, instruments with a hands-on section, fabrics and jewelry from all over Africa). With treasure hunt sheets in hand, students find many interesting items in this exhibit and get a social studies grade for filling out their sheets. At the same time, a drum circle is being conducted in another section of the school so all students are fully immersed in culture for two days. On the third day, The Healing Force preforms The Rhythm of the Drum for the entire student body.

WORKSHOPS: Shadow Puppetry Student Workshops for 2nd-6th graders, Hobey combines storytelling with shadow puppetry and brings a variety of cultures to life in the classroom through favorite stories. During this workshop, Hobey will demonstrate shadow puppetry and teach students to make a simple “rod” puppet, basically a character’s body on one or more sticks. Students will become familiar with tales from several different cultures, ultimately choosing one to illustrate with their own easily-made shadow puppets and learn shadow puppetry performance techniques.

ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Hobey Ford’s performances incorporate a variety of puppetry styles: Bunraku, rod, marionettes, “Foamies” and shadow puppetry. He adapts tales from various cultures for many of his performances, always adding a special “Golden Rod” twist. He designs and constructs all of his Golden Rod puppets and the beautiful sets that surround them. Hobey tours a repertoire of up to six performances for preschool to middle school students with various curricular focus. Each performance is accompanied by a study guide.

Hot Horns ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Hot Horns is a vibrant and entertaining musical ensemble that regularly travels presenting interactive, educational concerts and master-classes. Led by trumpeter, Glen Johnson, Hot Horns is the premiere educational ensemble of its kind. Unique to Hot Horns is its all-inclusive instrumentation and its burnin’ arrangements. Hot Horns incorporates its trademark combinations of various brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, all performed by six friendly, enthusiastic musicians with backgrounds in education. The group performs various genres of music from classical to jazz, rock to pop and more. The ensemble was originally founded in 1995. Since that time, the group has toured Korea (1999), received first prize at the New York Brass Conference – International Brass Quintet Competition (2003). Hot Horns has worked with Young Audiences in most of the lower 48 states to bring educational concerts to diverse audiences of children at hundreds of schools throughout the country.

ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Creating Comics: The purpose of this program is to educate and inspire the next generation of visual storytellers and encourage art in general. Comic Books and Manga are everywhere, but what does it take to make one? Using a hybrid method of talking and live drawing, Erik will illustrate some of the basics of drawing comic book art and will discuss some of the best ways to create comics today. Things like anatomy, construction, perspective, panel layout and page flow will be addressed. Superheroes will be drawn and fun will be had. Keeping a daily sketchbook and drawing from life will be stressed. Imagination and exaggeration in art will be encouraged. Erik will talk about some of the different traditional methods and materials that can be used for drawing comics (as well as their current digital alternatives) and will demonstrate how to use those methods and materials when possible. Tony Peacock ABOUT THE ARTIST: Tony Peacock has been visiting North Carolina classrooms since 1998. He brings a genuine love of our state and its people to each school he visits. A graduate of Mount Olive College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his experience as a published newspaper columnist, essayist, short story writer and novelist make for inspiring writing presentations to students. Tony is also a former National Hollerin’ Champion, a skill that he often demonstrates joyfully for deserving residency and workshop participants. His classes have been called “an amazing story of connecting and bonding.”

WORKSHOPS: In “The Power of Words” ( POW!) Workshop, Professor READY brings over two decades of professional theater and screen acting experience, a love for Shakespear, and over a decade of experience working with youth groups. WORKSHOPS: “Troika!” There is nothing more quintessentially Russian than the three-horse-drawn carriage known as the troika. Students learn the folk dance ‘’Troika” with ethnomusicologist Terry, and perform it to balalaika music played by Siberian-born Oleg. Students will understand the era in Russia when troikas were used in a sophisticated mail relay system and contrast it to today’s communication systems. Shabutaso ABOUT THE ARTIST: Shabutaso began as a family ensemble in 1985, performing, teaching, and creating African art. In 2010, Founders Mama and Baba Shabu re-located to West Africa to build a cultural center and artisan’s workshop on a 10-acre farm in Liberia. Their children, multi-instrumentalists Mabinti and Teli, are modern-day griots continuing the legacy of their elders. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: The Griot’s Gourd is a performance with storytelling instruments made from gourds. Through both traditional and original melodies, singing and dancing, Shabutaso’s modern-day griots make connections between West Africa and North Carolina. Allan Wolf ABOUT THE ARTIST: Two-time winner of the North Carolina YA Book Award, Allan Wolf is an author and performance poet. The Yarborough-Bank Theater and Motion Simulator enlighten visitors about the excitement and fear experienced by airborne and special operations soldiers every day. The drama becomes real for the museum visitor through state of the art technology. The 225-seat Yarborough-Bank theater presents an entertaining and enlightening “larger than life.” The motion simulator provides two experiances: “The Army in the Move” and “Experiance the Legend” both providing the visitor a first hand virtual experiance of the Airborne & Special Operations Soldier.

Notes Cape Fear Studios Cape Fear Studios was established in 1989 and is the one and only visual arts cooperative in Fayetteville. We have been in the same location on Maxwell Street since our beginning and pride ourselves in growing each year. Local artists pay a yearly membership fee and volunteer their own time to help, in union with the Cumberland County Arts Council and generous donors, in the operations of the Studio. of “The Greatest Generation” Alive Heroes Homecoming IV hopes to build a lasting bridge from World War II veterans The Greatest Generation - to our youth. During this year’s celebration more than ever, students will be encouraged to learn about World War II. Students will be directly involved with the event - from school activities to parade participation. The ultimate goal of Heroes Homecoming IV is for our youth to keep the voices of The Greatest Generation alive for future generations. As most World War II veterans are in their 90s, this is one of the last opportunities to give them the tribute they deserve. We have so much to learn from these brave men and woman, who fought to make America the place it is today. It is important that we take the time to learn and pass on to future generations the core values of the WWII veterans. Some events for students to participate in during Heroes Homecoming IV include:

1897 POE HOUSE: Built in 1897 by the Poe family, students will learn about life in the early 1900s. One hundred years ago many technological changes occurred just as technological advances in our time have changed the way we live. A tour through the Poe House will highlight the comparisons of life now and then.
