How Can the Artist in Schools program benefit my students? Arts education encourages students to stay in school and succeed in school, life and work*: Staying in School A student involved in the arts is: Three times more likely to win an award for school attendance Five times less likely to drop out of school Success in School A student involved in the arts is: Four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement Four times more likely to part icipate in a math and science fair Two times more likely to graduate college Success in Life A student involved in the arts is more likely to earn an Associate’s degree (44% vs. 27%) and earn a Bachelor’s degree (37% vs. 17%) and obtain gainful employment (50% vs. 40%) Success in Work 72% of business leaders say that creativity is the number one skill they are seeking when hiring *Americans for the Arts

What Kind of Programs are in this Directory? Artists of all artistic and academic disciplines are available in this directory. Use the matrix on pages 2 and 3, as well as the individual artist pages, to help you find: appropriate grade levels, as well as the artistic and academic discipline(s) offered by each artist. Multiple program options are available: Performance/Assembly, Workshops and/or Residencies:

Assembly Performances and Workshops Assembly performances vary, but typically involve an artist or artist group performing for an audience. In a workshop, an artist or artist group will work with a classroom or small group for a single session. Many workshops are offered only in conjunction with a performance.

Grant Funding: Schools can apply for funds to cover up to half (50%) of the Artist’s Fee.

Artist Residencies Residencies may vary, but generally last one week. A residency should be an ongoing relationship with the same students each day throughout the residency. The artist is expected to coordinate with the curriculum objectives of the teacher or school.

Grant Funding: The Arts Council recognizes the benefits of long-term contact with students in a residency setting. As such, the Arts Council will provide two-thirds (approx. 66%) of the artist’s fee.

4

New to this? Here are some tips on ways to take care of your visiting artist and make the most of your AIS experience: 1.

Select your artists using the Arts Council’s AIS Directory as your guide. For more details, call the Arts Council at 323-1776 to discuss which artists would be best for your school’s cultural arts program or review of the artist’s website..

2.

Make sure you understand the commitment before you sign the contract between the Arts Council, the school and the visiting artist. Please call the Arts Council for any assistance you may need.

3.

The artists will contact the schools to schedule dates/times for their visits to the schools. They will contact the principal and/or the designated school liason. All scheduled visits and/or changes to the schedules must be reported to the Arts Council by the artists and the schools.

4.

Pay the Arts Council on time as specified in the contract; artists expect and need their checks on time. You are requesting a Matching Grant, the schools pay the Arts Council and the Arts Council pays the artists.

5.

For performances, workshops and residencies, certified teachers must be in attendance with the students. The artists are there to enhance learning, not to handle discipline and other normal classroom details. There should be one (1) certified teacher per 25-30 students present at all times.

6.

Provide water, juice or soft drinks available before, during or after the programs. Just ask the artists their preference – it will be appreciated.

7.

Find out the technical requirements – they may be minimal, but very important to the artists and to the audiences.

8.

Decide who will briefly introduce the artist to the audience. This person should also acknowledge the Arts Council and the matching grant as stated in the contract. This person should be available to supervise the program and assist the artist if necessary.

9.

It is good PR for the schools to inform their parents and the public about the “great things” happening in the schools. So, call the local newspaper, put the events in your school newsletter and get the word out as much as possible.

He is mesmerizing as he brings stories to life, while plucking the string with just the touch the human heart craves. He has been described as a “word magician,” a “national treasure,” “unexpectedly powerful” and a “transformer of lives.” Mitch first began writing and performing skits at the age of 12 and has over 35 hours of stories stored to memory. He has been featured at numerous schools, libraries, museums and festivals since 1985 including DuSable in Chicago; The Kennedy Center in DC; The National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN; the Smithsonian’s 2009 Folklife Festival on the National Mall and the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama. He has been the Artist-In-Residence at the International Storytelling Center and has received accolades and awards from local, state and national organizations for his work with youth. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES: Want A Story? (K-12). Continuing his family tradition of preserving culture, “Gran’daddy Junebug” teaches personal responsibility, finding your right path, coping with peer pressure, being true to yourself, always striving for excellence and respect for self and others through the African tradition of “call and response.” This highly energetic program utilizes a tremendous amount of audience participation as he shares his wisdom which has students learning life lessons as they have the time of their lives. One principal wrote, “I’ve been in education for 35 years and that is the BEST cultural arts program I have ever witnessed in my career!” We Wear The Mask (6-12; college). Using narratives from historic research as well as the poetic genius of Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906), Mitch Capel unveils the true depth of the soul and life of this remarkable poet laureate from Dayton, OH. Audiences realize the struggle for existence, understand the courage, feel the compassion, know why “the caged bird sings” and why “with torn and bleeding hearts, we smile.” Joanne Braxton, author of The collected Poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar wrote, “Mitch is the greatest interpreter of Dunbar’s work ever!” W’en Dey ‘Listed Colored Soldiers (7-12; college). Feel the climate of America and check the pulse of the unsung heroes of the Civil War. Learn about “Whistlin’ Sam,” “Lias,” “Whisperin’ Bill,” “William Carney” and others whose recollections and stories of unflinching courage were never told. Erik will talk about some of the different traditional methods and materials that can be used for drawing comics (as well as their current digital alternatives) and will demonstrate how to use those methods and materials when possible. Younger age groups will have a stronger emphasis on basic drawing. Older age groups will have more emphasis on visual narrative and sequential storytelling.

She has conducted popular, successful and highly sought after residencies in over 200 schools since 1993. Newell’s work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and juried shows across the country and can be found in numerous corporate collections. The strength of Newell’s highly successful and motivating residencies comes from her love of both teaching and children, which allows her creativity to inspire students and staff alike. RESIDENCY: BANNERS (Grades: 4-12) Students collaborate with Newell to create large, vibrant, impressive banners that are permanently installed in your school lobby or other location of your choice. These bright, colorful hangings bring a child-centered, creative and arts friendly atmosphere to your school. Using vibrant fabric dyes, students from grades 3-12 will enjoy learning silk painting techniques to complete these wonderful banners. The theme of this legacy gift is decided by the school. This residency is a great way to encourage a community spirit at your school, as the artist encourages all school staff and parents to participate! Students keep a journal that is appropriate for meeting Language Arts requirements of descriptive writing. The materials fee includes up to 5 banners. BATIK Fiber Art (Grades: 4-12) Students create their own individual, exciting Batiks, and develop an understanding of this success oriented, self-esteem boosting, fiber art form with both African and Indonesian roots. This unusual process involves melted wax and vibrant fabric dyes. With input from teachers, the subjects of the Batiks can be integrated with and enhance your Social Studies or Science curriculum. For example, eco systems, rain forests, Latin American designs, etc. Students keep a journal that can meet several Language Arts requirements. Many schools use this Batik Residency year after year to become a tradition in a particular grade, such as 5th grade. Notes Nov. IV: 4-6, 2016 HEROES HOMECOMING November 4 - 6, 2016 Keeping the Voices Keeping Voices of “The Greatestthe Generation” Alive

of “The Greatest Generation” Alive Heroes Homecoming IV hopes to build a lasting bridge from World War II veterans The Greatest Generation - to our youth. During this year’s celebration more than ever, students will be encouraged to learn about World War II. Students will be directly involved with the event - from school activities to parade participation. The ultimate goal of Heroes Homecoming IV is for our youth to keep the voices of The Greatest Generation alive for future generations. As most World War II veterans are in their 90s, this is one of the last opportunities to give them the tribute they deserve. We have so much to learn from these brave men and woman, who fought to make America the place it is today. It is important that we take the time to learn and pass on to future generations the core values of the WWII veterans. Some events for students to participate in during Heroes Homecoming IV include:
