Mayor’s threats do not scare gangsters Nor does it give confidence to residents
Surrey Mayor & Public Safety Minister threaten gangsters B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth and Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner presented a united front Thursday, after meeting to discuss a recent surge in gang violence in the city. “Toe tag and jail are the only options for these guys if they don’t choose to accept the help we would offer if they want to end their gang life,” Hepner told reporters after the meeting. “We are coming after you, we are not going to stop, you are going to be caught, you are going to be convicted, and you are going to go to jail,” Farnworth added. Gun violence has been a simmering problem in the city for several years, but the issue came to a head last weekend with shots fired in three incidents in a single day. Continued on Page 6...
Canadian soldiers build tents for those crossing border illegally
Teams of Canadian soldiers stretched canvas across the metal frames of tents at a camp site near the Quebec-U.S. border Wednesday as they helped fellow authorities cope with the crush of asylum seekers crossing into Canada. Continued on Page 10...
So now all of a sudden, Mayor Linda Hepner has decided that she will get rid of the criminal gangs Surrey. This is the same Mayor Hepner, who, shortly after being elected Mayor, did not want the press to question her about drive by shootings in Surrey or ask her about rampant gang violence in Surrey. “ I am not the Sherrif in this town” or words to that effect she declared, telling press not to question her about gun violence. So forgive me for being a little skeptical if I ask what has changed now that Mayor Hepner is threatening to make life miserable for gangsters in
our Surrey?? Time! Time has changed and election is drawing close so, of course, Mayor Hepner is now acting like a Wild West Sherrif and threatening gangsters. But words alone do not scare gangsters who dodge bullets daily on the streets of Surrey. And definitely Mayor Hepner’s words do not scrape anyone nor does it give any confidence to taxpayers of Surrey. Some action would give the residents of Surrey some comfort but no action has so far been announced by Mayor Hepner after her meeting with Public Safety Minister Mark Farnsworth. Somalis with criminal records coming to Canada from US: intelligence report As the United States has stepped up deportations of Somalis with criminal records, some have crossed illegally into Canada and made refugee claims under false identities, according to an intelligence report obtained. The fear of deportation by U.S. immigration authorities appears to have driven some Somalis with criminal histories to travel north and illicitly cross the border to claim asylum, said the Canada Border Services Agency Intelligence Brief. While those with serious criminal pasts
represent only a small fraction of Somali refugee claimants, the report said the U.S. removal policy was “posing an increased security risk as some of these individuals are fleeing to Canada.” “Somali nationals with criminal records in the U.S. may be attempting to evade justice by claiming refugee protection in Canada,” said the report, distributed by the CBSA’s Intelligence Operations and Analysis Division.
