Moderate slate wins Gurdwara election
Sikhs ordered to leave store because of their Kirpans Two Manitoba Sikhs were shocked when they were stopped from entering a Dollarama store because of their Kirpan. Harpal Gill says in the 16 years he’s lived in Canada, he has never been told to leave a store because of his kirpan, a ceremonial dagger carried by Sikhs. That changed Sept. 8 when
he and his friend Joginder Sidhu went into the Dollarama store on Jefferson Avenue in Winnipeg and were stopped by staff and security and told they could not enter with their kirpans. “It is my religious symbol. How can you stop me?” Gill asked the manager of the Dollarama. Continued on Page 8
Allegation local banks favor foreigners as student flips property for $1.16 M profit Researchers for NDP housing critic David Eby have turned up property documents that show a homebuyer, listed as a student, bought a Point Grey property and within a year flipped it for a $1.16 million profit. In other cases, Eby said, buyers listed as students secured mortgages on $40 million worth of real estate purchases in the expensive west-side neighbourhood with no indication of whether they reported income to support those loans. The moderates are once again in charge of the North America’s oldest gurudwara society, the Khalsa Diwan Society, which operates the Ross Street Gurdawara. The moderate slate headed by Presidentelect Malkit Singh Dhami overcame the Sikh Sangat Sevadar slate headed by Joga Singh Sangha by an average of 500 votes in the election for the board of directors last Saturday. Dhami garnered 4,370 votes to Sangha’s 3,685 votes. Total votes cast were 8,089. Continued on Page 6

Canada’s self-styled feminist prime minister was praised Tuesday by one of the world’s most powerful women for his commitment to gender equality even as he was taking it on the chin from other women for appearing at a gendersegregated event the previous day.
