THE IDEA THAT BROUGHT DANGAL TO LIFE It was back in 2012 when Olympic wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat appeared in a leading newspaper, and caught the eye of creative executive, Divya Rao. Inspired by the story of Phogat’s decision to train his two daughters in wrestling, Divya began storyboarding a tale on the Phogat. When Rao first pitched Dangal’s story to the UTV team, they instantly fell in love with the inspirational story. Nitesh Tiwari, who was chosen to pen and direct the movie, instantly set off to meet Phogat and his wrestler-daughters. Once they agreed to tell their story, UTV approached none other

than Aamir Khan to essay the character of Mahavir Singh on the big screen. The story of Dangal revolves around the extraordinary life of Phogat, an ex-wrestler who never accomplished his dream of winning an international gold medal. Forced to give up his dreams due to financial pressures, Phogat resolves that his would be son would realize his dream. However, destiny has other plans. Over almost two decades, he is blessed with four children, all girls, and Phogat loses hope. But when one day, his elderst daughter Geeta, at 14 years old, and her sibling Babita, now 12 years old, bash up some

boys for teasing them, he realizes that his daughters have what it takes to be worldclass wrestlers. Hope kicks back in- after all, a gold medal is a gold medal whether a boy wins it or a girl. What follows is a relentless pursuit of Phogat, over a period of 10 years, in making his daughters world-class wrestlers. He leaves no stone unturned, training them with boys, like boys, to beat boys in various local village wrestling tournaments. He makes sure they don’t just fight, but fight to win. Set against all odds, the story explores his grit and determination and the Phogats' will to never gives up on seeing India win gold.

his year, the world has been saddened by the sudden death of Junaid Jamshed who died in a plane crash on December 7th in Havelian, Pakistan. The former singersongwriter, television star and fashion designer was one of the biggest names in Asian stardom before renouncing his former professions and using his platform to become an acclaimed preacher. His untimely loss has been felt all over the world. Jamshed, 52, who was awarded a Medal of Excellence by the President of Pakistan, was on board with his wife and children. There has been an outpouring of grief for the humanitarian, with many taking to social media to express their grief for the beloved star. Actor Fakhr-r-Alam tweeted: “Dear Junaid, I shall cherish all our memories together. Prayers for your final journey. Till we meet again." Urwa Hocane, model and actress, tweeted: "Saddened beyond words! Rest in peace Junaid Jamshed and all

the people who were on board!” Jamshed first shot to fame as part of the band Vital Signs, whose album ‘Vital Signs 1’ gained international attention for their hit tracks Dil Dil Pakistan and Tum Mil Gaye. In fact, it was Vital Signs who paved the way for Pakistan’s rock music industry of today. Afterwards, Jamshed went on to release three solo albums, Junaid of Vital Signs, Us Rah Par and Dil Ki Baat. In the 2000s, Junaid took another path and developed a fashion line with a friend, as well as turning his life to Islam. In 2004, he officially committed his life to Islam and became a globally recognised cleric and preacher. He was praised for his work with NGO Muslim Charity and was listed by The Muslim 500 as one of the "World's Most Influential Muslims" for his dedication and extensive charity work. Jamshed’s reputation in the Pakistani music industry will hold forever, and what the world has lost in generosity and artistry, it has not lost in influence.

IT'S MORE THAN JUST CHRISTMAS

W

hile people have been waiting anxiously to see the new Christmas adverts from different stores and departments, such as John Lewis and Marks & Spencer,

Amazon quietly released their very own 2016 advert. Following the story of two old friends, one being an Imam and the other a Vicar, we get to watch the two elderly men enjoy a cup of tea and each other’s company.

This then continues on to letting the viewers see how they have both ordered one another a present after complaining about knee pain. Amusingly enough, they both had the same thought and bought each other the same

gift, being knee pads. The men are then shown in their different places of worship, a Mosque and a Church, both down on their knees praying and wearing the knee pads. Continued on Page 2
