The Ripple Effect A

Pa k i s t a n i - b o r n scientist has been praised for being part of the team who detected gravitational waves in space. Dr Nergis Mavalvala is a Pakistani-American astrophysicist, who is also a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a recent statement said “Nergis Malvalvala is a source of inspiration for Pakistani scientists and students aspiring to become future scientists.”

The Prime Minister also added “The entire nation is proud of her valuable contribution.” Dr Mavalvala was among the eagle-eyed team of scientists who, for the first time, observed ripples in the fabric of space-time called gravitational waves. The detection of these waves confirms a significant prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 theory of relativity and opens an extraordinary and unprecedented new window onto the cosmos. Dr Mavalvala devoted herself into research on gravitational waves. By the time she received her PhD in 1997, she was already working on building LIGO. Dr Mavalvala’s work on gravitational waves has spanned for over 20 years leading up to the discovery. “The big picture mission drives you. he Prime Minister is facing strong criticism from a Birmingham MP for claiming that individuals who failed to learn English would be “more susceptible” to being terrorist supporters. Shabana Mahmood, Labour MP, said that no evidence existed to link people’s inability to speak English to the increased likelihood of them becoming extremists. Unveiling the Government’s plans to encourage migrants coming to the UK on a spouse’s visa to learn English, David Cameron made the seemingly illogical decision to focus his publicity material on Muslim women though the scheme applies to all men and women who move to the UK as a husband or wife of a British citizen. The Prime Minister also warned that individuals who failed to take heed “can’t be

guaranteed” the opportunity to remain in the country. Representative for Ladywood, Shabana Mahmood raised her concerns whilst voicing support for any plans to make learning English easier for immigrants. Shabana said, “The first point where his logic departs is his leap from a lack of English to higher susceptibility to radicalisation.” She added: “There is no evidence for it. In the 1960s many of the women who came to Birmingham from Kashmir could not speak English but levels of terrorism did not increase. “In any case it’s far from clear why the lack of English speaking by the mum of the family is so problematic in relation to radicalisation and extremism. She accused the Prime Minister of failing to understand that “Muslim

women are making choices for themselves.” Shabana Mahmood expressed similar apprehensions in an for The Times, writing: “The majority of the examples I see of Muslim women who dress with a full veil or who socialise in a segregated setting are educated professional women – just making a different choice to the one Cameron wants them to. She added: “I don’t agree with either … – but I have always respected the freely made choices of my fellow human beings, even when they are inexplicable to me. “So the real question I would ask the prime minister is this: how comfortable is he with accepting the genuine choices of women, educated and literate, when they don’t fit with his world view?”

#Totally Submissive The Prime Minister suggestions that young men are more vulnerable to radicalisation, due the ‘traditional submissiveness of Muslim women,’ not surprisingly sparked fury with Muslim women, who took to social media to express outrage over the generalising remarks, sparking Twitter hash tag #TotallySubmissive. #TotallySubmissive became the digital rallying call for the often misrepresented demographic. Strong, independent Muslim women proudly displayed their achievements on Twitter subverting the societal constraints so often associated with the veiled Muslim woman. David Cameron’s lewd comments regarding the integration of non-English speaking Muslim women followed his request to Director General of the Government's Troubled Families unit, Louise Casey to instigate a "a comprehensive review into boosting opportunity and integration to bring Britain together as one nation". The review will be put in place to ensure people from ethnic minority backgrounds feel they have a place in British society, as well as investigating the familial role in tacking radicalisation.

City man fined for dumping waste

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands police on 101 or 0800 555 111

A Birmingham man has been ordered to pay £230 after pleading guilty at Birmingham Magistrates of illegally dumping waste, including cannabis plants, on a Cotteridge car park. Daniel Hughes, 32, of Wadham House, Woodlands Way, Chelmsley Wood, was prosecuted by Birmingham City Council for an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 of dumping controlled waste on a car park in Hudsons Drive, Cotteridge between 1 January and 15 January 2015. Hughes was fined £110 and ordered to pay £130 towards court costs. Environmental health officers visited the car park in Hudsons Drive on 14 January 2015, following a complaint of fly tipping, where they found approximately 30 black bags of rubbish. When officers opened the bags they found three contained domestic waste, but the rest of the sacks contained controlled waste including prescription packets, cannabis plants and cannabis growing paraphernalia and evidence linking to Hughes. Cllr Barbara Dring, Chair of the Licensing and Public Protection Committee, said: “There is no excuse for people to dump their waste on public streets or land,

regardless of whether it is their own household waste or waste cleared commercially for someone else. “There is a free to use Household Recycling Centre in Lifford Lane, less than a mile away from where the waste was dumped, where residents can dispose of their household refuse responsibly. “We will use all the powers available to us to take enforcement action and prosecute anyone who does fly tip in Birmingham. Anyone who sees rubbish dumped, can report incidents in confidence by emailing reportflytipping@ birmingham.gov.uk” Cllr Lisa Trickett, Cabinet Member for Sustainability for Birmingham City Council, added: “We need to love and respect our neighbourhoods, so it is disappointing to see rubbish being dumped on our streets. There is no excuse for anyone to dump their waste. “We will use all the powers available to us to take enforcement action and prosecute anyone – businesses or individuals – fly tipping waste in Birmingham. Keeping our city’s streets clean is everyone’s responsibility so we will continue to clamp down on litter bugs and fly tippers, targeting areas where there is a persistent problem.”

Zatoon Bibi, of Rowey Lane, Oldbury, was set to appear in Birmingham Magistrates Courts on Wedneday Morning. Tanveer Iqbal was reported missing on Monday afternoon, after not being seen after closing his Hi-Tech Music shop in Smethwick on Sunday evening. Det Insp Paul Joyce said: “Police are working around the clock to try and piece together events leading up to this man’s death. “I am particularly keen to speak to any witnesses who may have seen Mr Iqbal between closing his shop in Smethwick on Sunday night and the time he was discovered at lunchtime

irmingham MP Rodger Godsiff is urging the Prime Minister to over turn decisions to deny lifesaving medicine to cancer sufferer Khalid Younis. The father-of-four was diagnosed with a chronic form of Myeloid Leukaemia and is being treated at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Earlier in June, The Kings Heath local was told that the only available treatment left to use was Ponatinib, a drug that is widely available in Scotland and Wales, but not in England. Younis was later informed by medics that his case was ‘not exceptional’ enough by the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF) to warrant the treatment. Ponatinib, often refered to as the ‘wonder drug’ is the only option left for the 43-year-old who has become resistant to all other medication and is unable to undergo a stem cell transplant due to a lung condition. Hall Green MP Rodger Godsiff has since appealed to David Cameron in hopes to over turn the decision “before it is too late” for Mr Younis. In a letter to Downing

Street, Godsiff, backed by Nick Dakin MP (Scunthorpe), Mark Durkan MP (Foyle) and Henry Smith MP (Crawley), called on Mr Cameron to do all he can to help Khalid receive the treatment he needs. He wrote: “I am very worried indeed that by that point it may be too late for Khalid. It would be utterly tragic for him to die when a treatment exists that could save his life. “He is unable to undergo a stem cell transplant due to also suffering from other conditions which exclude an operation of that magnitude. “My colleagues and I ask that you do everything in your power to aid him in accessing the drug in the interim to give him the best possible chance of survival.” Despite being readily available in Scotland and Wales, it is only available to patients in England with the rare T315I mutation, which affects between 2 and 20 per cent of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Mr Younis, a former carpet fitter, even considered uprooting his family to Wales to become eligible for the treatment. 'They say I'm not

Birmingham city councillor Waseem Zaffar was caught in a heated debate with Tommy Robinson, head of anti-Islamist group Pegida. During the debate, held at the Assemblies of the First Born Church in Lozells, the Labour councillor told the far right group head that there was no place in the city for his divisive ideology to be paraded, saying that the former EDL leader along with his followers were not welcome in the city. Speaking after the clash, Coun Zaffar, Labour representative for East Handsworth and Lozells, said: “They are taking Tommy Robinson around the city to meet various people so I took the opportunity to look him in the eye and say we do not want him in Birmingham. “I likened him to Anjem Choudary, who is also not welcome here, they both preach hatred and division.” “We have picked up the pieces here and moved on,” he said, referring to the racial tensions in the city’s past. Witness to the debate, community activist Desmond Jaddoo described it as a very heated debate, saying: “Waseem didn’t pull his punches. He told Tommy Robinson he was inciting hatred.” The debate was organised by broadcaster Adrian Goldberg for a Radio 4 documentary focusing on the Pegida leader ahead of the group’s planned rally in Birmingham on February 6.

MAWLID - UN - NABI BIRTHDAY OF THE PROPHET

Councillor Afzal

Steps down as Lord Mayor elect

A

Recently the famous poetry reciter Hafiz Rafaqut Hussain whose glorious voice is heard by Millions of viewers on a daily basis with his recitation of the Durood Taj, celebrated the Mawlid event at his house inviting people from all communities to spread love and unite the nation. On the twelfth day of the third month, Rabi' alAwwal, many Muslims commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. In many predominantly Muslim countries, Mawlid al-Nabi is a major public holiday. Muslims view this festival as a means to teach their communities about the Prophet Muhammad’s way of life, which all Muslims seek to emulate. Throughout the world, there are a variety of expressions for the observance of the birth of the Prophet: some celebrations take place simply in private homes; other Muslims decorate their localmasjid with lights and hold large festive gatherings. Celebrations of Mawlid al-Nabi include sharing food, attending lectures, participating in marches, and reading the Qur’an and devotional poetry. In some countries, such as Pakistan, the entire month of Rabi' al-Awwal is observed as the Prophet’s “birth month.” In Singapore, the observance of Mawlid alNabi is a one-day festival which often includes special “birthday parties” for poor children and orphans in addition to the regular prayers and lectures in local masajid. Azhar Square in Cairo is the site of one of the largest celebrations, with over two million Muslims in attendance. In 1994, the First International Mawlid al-Nabi Conference was held in Chicago, Illinois, organized by the Peoria-based Naqshbandiya Foundation for Islamic Education (NFIE). At the conference, shaykhs and scholars from around the world argued for both the religious precedence and cultural importance of the celebration of the birth of the Prophet. More than 1,200 people from across North America and from overseas attended this spiritual conference, the theme of which was “Love of God and His Prophet.” A second conference, “Spiritual Aspects of Islam,” was held in 1995. Lectures were presented by eminent scholars and Sufi leaders from around the world; devotional poetry in praise of the Prophet Muhammad was delivered in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Kurdish, Bosnian, and English. conference in Chicago included efforts to coordinate with other Muslim organizations to hold similar gatherings in major North American cities during the month of Rabi' al-Awwal. In 2011, the conference was held in Edison, N.J., with corresponding festivals held in London and Pakistan. The various ethnic groups in the American Muslim community bring their distinct customs to this festival observance. Some Islamic centers hold special programs for children, where they learn about the character and life of the Prophet, examine the way he dealt with important moral issues and with political and military affairs, how he handled challenges, and how he responded to his enemies and his friends. Children often prepare essays or skits that present important teachings or events in Muhammad’s life. Many Muslims feel that the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday is particularly important in the American context. As one Islamic publication explains: “In our Islamic countries, love of the Prophet...is found everywhere and is encouraged by the society... I would like to say few words myself on recent happenings!!! "In light of the recent tragic events, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences towards all who have been directly or indirectly affected. It is in times like these where we are reminded that human life is sacred, in fact all life is, and we should protect and bear responsibility for one another as equals in humanity. In Islam, there is no place for mercilessness, let alone murder, oppression and brutality; and it is the tenets of Islam which teach us as Muslims today to stand strong in the face of terror where evil is committed in our names. We have been taught to bear patience - the Qur'an praises the virtue of patience - and to meet any evil with the Prophetic signature trait of mercy. It is the Prophet Muhammad who taught us to not respond to wrong with wrong, but rather to exchange evil with nobility. Indeed, we may not be able to change the hearts and minds of others, but we can at least safeguard our own. Evil is not our teacher. The Prophet himself was dedicated to the betterment of the people, individuals and communities; he believed in healing society through altruism, justice and hope. And on this day, we pray that God gives us the strength to embody his sacred way."

fter recent controversies, Councillor Afzal has announced his withdrawal from the running to become Lord Mayor elect. The veteran Labour councillor had been expected to become Birmingham’s First Citizen, when public embroilments ensued. The Birmingham Councillor came under-fire when he made derogatory comments about the government’s Prevent-anti-terror scheme, accusing David Cameron of being an Islamophobe as well as urging people to oppose the new legislation, posing alongside a banner which said ‘No To Prevent’ and ‘No to state racism’. Days later, Mr Afzal who is also Chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, was accused of dismissing comments made by prominent Muslim Women’s Network UK regarding forced marriage and domestic abuse. Shaista Gohir, Chair of the organisation, stated in a letter of complaint: “We provided examples of case studies from our helpline and explained that other women’s help-lines across the country were regularly receiving calls on forced marriages and that a high percentage of these concerned Muslim women and girls, particularly from Pakistani background, to which Mr Afzal responded by saying: “forced marriage was no longer a problem.” He then went on to say that “domestic violence was happening mainly in the Christian community because they get drunk.” The disparaged councillor stated he had withdrawn his name from the running of Lord Mayor elect because he was anxious that no controversy should attach to the post of Lord Mayor. Coun. Afzal, who had been a councillor for 32 years, had been expected to take over as Lord Mayor in May, but due to his recent digressions, the long-time Labour

representative was urged to step down by many public figures including Labour leader, John Clancy. Support from is fellow councillors has waned in light of Mr Afzal’s recent transgression against the Muslim Women’s Network UK, as Ms. Gohir called on the leaders of Birmingham Central Mosque to resign after she said they dismissed the group’s concerns about domestic violence and forced marriages. Despite the media barrage, Afzal denied making the flippant comments, stating: “People are not going to resign just because Shaista says so. Her allegations have been completely refuted by Birmingham central mosque,” he said. Central Mosque has since released a statement denying Gohir’s claims, adding they respected Muslim Women’s Network UK: “as they work in addressing complex and often hidden issues within the Muslim communities and beyond.” Announcing that he would step back from being Labour’s lord mayoral candidate on Monday evening, Afzal said: “I consider it a huge honour to be chosen by the Labour group to be the party’s nominee as the next lord mayor. If the council had agreed to this nomination to be the first citizen of such a great city, it would have been the highlight of my career and a great privilege. He added: “I want to thank all those members of the wider Birmingham community for their support. These are people who know what I stand for. Whoever the council chooses as its next Lord Mayor will have my full and unequivocal support as have previous Lord Mayors.” “However, recent publicity in the local media has given rise to unfair and indeed untrue comments being ascribed to me. I have tried to put the record straight but sadly it has not been possible to do so as rumour and innuendo has replaced facts.”

TEENAGER ARRESTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH FALSE BOMB SCARE

Small Heath School

Strikes Again • STRIKE: Labour MP Shabana Mahmood condemned the striking in Small Heath School and urged staff to return to the class room

The young boy was arrested and detained on Thursday Morning In suspicion of being responsible for the bomb threat that was called in to Great Barr Comprehensive School on Wednesday 27th of January. The suspicious call was traced to a nearby phone box and CCTV footage was used to identify the minor as a suspect. Inspector Noeleen Murrin, from Birmingham Police, said: “These kinds of offences are not only a drain on police, council and school resources but they also waste the time of pupils who should be receiving their education.

“These kinds of offences are not only a drain on police, council and school resources but they also waste the time of pupils who should be receiving their education. Midlands Police have announced that the investigation is not linked to the other hoax bomb threats that where made across the West Midlands, that saw thousands of pupils evacuated from school buildings in precautionary measures. The maximum sentence for the offence of communicating a bomb hoax is seven years in prison. Several school were evacuated last week in the West Midlands area after a totally of fourteen school received bomb threats. The West Midlands Police Force has dismissed suggestions that there is “any credible threat to any of the schools.”

L

abour MP Shabana Mahmood has condemned striking in Small Heath School, urging staff to return to the classroom. Concerns ensued as Small Heath School teachers staged a walk-out in solidarity with NUT (National Union of Teachers) representative Simon O’Hara. The long-time teacher was suspended from the school due to his opposition to it becoming an Aacademy. The Ladywood MP has asked teachers to

reconsider their decision to strike, urging them to consider the hundreds of children at the school who will not receive adequate education while staff is away. In a strongly-worded letter, the MP states: “I put it to you that this response is not proportionate. Hundreds of children are not receiving an education because there exists an employee/employer dispute regarding one member of staff. “This cannot be right. I am additionally concerned that striking has been chosen as the mechanism by which to resolve this staff issue when there must be other routes open to you.” Labour Councillor Brigid Jones echoed the concerns expressed by Coun. Mahmood in an open letter, stating: : “It is my view that the NUT is crossing a line this week in deciding to strike on a principle which I cannot see on any level has either the best interests of the staff or these students in

mind.” Adding, that she respected the right to strike over the alleged academisation of the school, but felt that further industrial action is misjudged. Birmingham NUT general secretary David Room, said that Mr O’Hara had been victimised for speaking out against academisation and unreasonable workloads. “He has essentially been suspended on what appear to be very flimsy allegations,’’ he said. “This has left NUT members at the school determined to support their rep – they are striking until his suspension is lifted and there is an end to victimisation.” Teachers staged initial nine day strike to oppose the academisation of the school, but the last three days were called off when unions were assured there were no plans to take the school out of council control. But staff began striking again on Tuesday after the demand that Mr O’Hara be reinstated was not met. More strikes are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday and still more for the next two weeks.

DOMESTIC ABUSE LEAVES HUSBAND JAILED A husband, who stabbed his wife in a fit of rage, has been imprisoned for six and a half years. Bharat Patel, 51, admitted to wounding Taruna Patel with intent in the knife attack which took place in their family home in Sywell Avenue, Loughborough. The accountant at Loughborough University embedded the knife up to the hilt in his wife’s side whilst she was sitting to make sweets for Diwali during a row over her intention to travel to India for Christmas. The stabbing followed an attack in which Patel hit his wife over the head with

a wine bottle, witnessed by the couple’s teenage daughter. Taruna, 28, urged the 15-year-old to call for the police before the stabbing took place. Patel, who seemed dazed, told the police when they arrived: “I just lost it.” The officers found Taruna bleeding on the floor with the knife stuck in her side, the blade having penetrated her ribs, left both lungs punctured and cut into the atrium of the heart. She was treated at the scene by paramedics and underwent emergency surgery at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical

Centre to have the knife removed. The couple, whose arranged marriage had broken down when the attack took place, were in the process of separating. Judge Nicholas Dean QC at Leicester Crown Court said: "It seems you are remorseful and I observe your demeanour. "Whatever the stresses and strains you suffered at work, whatever pressures there were within your marriage, this shouldn't have happened. "It will be a long time before she regains the confidence she's entitled to, to enjoy her life, and for your children to come to terms with what you've done."

Good work tackling gangs A new strategy has been developed to build on the good work being done to tackle youth and gang violence in Wolverhampton. Over the last few years, the city's existing gangs strategy has helped to greatly improve the lives of those communities formerly blighted by gangs, bringing about a fall in gun and knife crime in the process. It has also seen the development of a range of new activities designed to tackle problem gangs, which the 2016-19 Preventing Gang Involvement and Youth Violence Strategy will seek to build upon by shifting the focus from harm reduction to prevention. In particular, the 2016-19 strategy seeks to stop people becoming involved in gangs in the first place with extra emphasis on early intervention and prevention and providing support to help people move away from violence and gangs. Tougher action will also be taken against those who refuse to leave. Other priorities include reducing reoffending, improving intelligence gathering by monitoring social media and developing stronger working practices with local schools and the health sector. Councillor Sandra Samuels, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: "This new strategy, which was developed with the help of a 12-week public consultation, seeks to continue this excellent work, and will have an important role in helping the council, police and other agencies control the problem."

Birmingham Youth Sports Academy

BYSA GALA CHARITY DINNER VISIT: BYSA.CO.UK FOR MORE DETAILS

B

irmingham Youth Sports Academy (BYSA) was established in 2002 by Birmingham local, Anwar Khattack, in a bid to offer young people, aged between 6 – 18, an opportunity to stay active, healthy and integrated within the community. Formed by a group of dedicated volunteers, the BYSA had one vision, which was to allow anyone and everyone to participate in sports regardless of age, colour, size or ability.

Founder of the Birmingham Youth Sports Academy Anwar Khattack, speaks to The Asian Today about his journey so far. What inspired you to create the initiative? When the BYSA was formed there was nothing in the local area, when it came to community project set-ups you had the local football teams and leisure centre but nothing for the kids and appropriate pricing for these activities. Therefore the BYSA offers sports and education every weekend and many children turn up to take part. In simple terms nothing was there for the community so we tried to make that effort and we're going from strength to strength today. Have you seen a change in the local youth with the organisation? Since 2002 we have had many kids in and out of our organisation. I have trained and supported some of the kids since they were 8, 15 years on they are living their lives. Some have gone into their professional career fields and some have their own businesses. I have recently been invited to the wedding of a someone who used to attend the BYSA, this makes us at the BYSA feel very old and like father figures in their life as people say your good role models for the children. Our organisation is open to anyone no matter what colour, size , age you are we want all kids from different backgrounds to just get along especially in the area that we are in. The things that go on, such as crime, we try our best to motivate, discipline and guide the children from our community. What is the most rewarding thing about helping the youngsters? The most rewarding thing is when a new child comes

The charity-based sporting initiative offers football training from qualified coaches to youngsters all over Birmingham on Saturday mornings at Small Heath Leisure centre, enabling children and teenagers to have a sporting outlet and keeping them active and away from the streets. The fantastic volunteer-lead organisation encourages youth to achieve their targets and goals both through sports and education, by pushing for

when adolescents were taken on an actionpacked holiday to Spain all expenses paid. This included flights, accommodation, transfers and a stadium tour stadium tour of Nou Camp, as well as a live match, beach football, sightseeing and training session with FC Espanyol coaches. Anwar Khattak, founder of the esteemed project, has been honoured with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his voluntary service and contribution to the local Community.

to the BYSA for the first time and he has no selfconfidence, no movement, no personality and is very shy or will not interact with other kids. Eventually the kid comes out of his shell and develop into little men I call them. We have made a real difference within our community we love seeing smiles and kids having a great time, what more can you ask for. What has been your highlight in all the years BYSA has been active? Seeing kids who have been with me since the age of 10 and are now 25 years old moving on and at the peek of their lives, this is an achievement in it self. Some members come back and help and support the project and others now send their other family, siblings, cousins and friends. We at the BYSA have had many memories such as the trips we have been too Barcelona and core projects within the UK. All this can be viewed on www. bysa.co.uk. BYSA is for the community and we hope to attract professional football players and clubs to associate with and promote the BYSA in the years to come. How is the BYSA funded and who are the supporters and ambassadors? BYSA was originally funded by local government grants, but now BYSA has attracted sponsors who donate when they can and help the BYSA to help the kids

whether it's sports trips or educational classes. We have a number of ambassadors on this year for 2016 such as HRH princess Katarina , Nazir Awan, Majid Salim, Nisar khattak, Balbir singh and the list goes on People have seen the work we do and noticed our efforts within the BYSA .

hailing from Upton Park East London, relocated his business to Birmingham after losing money in failed business venture in the capital. He was said to stay in the West Midlands during the week and returned to his family home in London at weekends. Superintendent Andy Parsons, from West Midlands Police, confirmed suspicions that the gunmen targeted Mr Javeed’s business specifically. Adding: “We believe this was a targeted attack and the purpose of that attack was a robbery. Mr Javeed, 56, leaves behind his wife and four children - a daughter, 30, son, 24, and two younger sons, 11 and 9 years old. A post-mortem examination is yet to take place as part of the murder investigation. Anyone with information about the occurrence should call West Midlands Police on 101, or alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Eye witness reports have revealed that Digbeth Murder victim Akhtar Javeed, was tied up and led away by two gunmen before being shot in the head.

wo men have been charged with the murder of soft drink firm owner Akhtar Javeed. 26-year-old businessman Surjat Mistry from Leicester and 18-year-old student, Lemar Wali have been charged with murder, possession of a firearm and conspiracy to commit robbery. Akhtar Javeed, 56, along with three employees, was tied up by masked men after they raided the Warehouse based in Rea Street South. The armed men were said to have singled out Javeed, before leading him away from other workers and shooting him in the warehouse reception area on Wednesday evening. West Midlands Police have said the two murder suspects fled the scene and remain unidentified. Mohammas Ashraf, an employee of Mr Javeed’s, described to police the chilling moment his boss

and friend was executed, stating: “I’m devastated and heartbroken. The men burst in before we were due to close. “They were wearing masks and had guns and tied the four of us up. “Then they asked for Akhtar and took him away. I can’t remember if they said his name or asked for the boss. “The next thing is I heard the gunshot. I didn’t know what had happened. I didn’t see it but it sounded like an execution. Armed police gathered at the site after receiving a 999 call from a distressed Mr Ashraf and found the business –owner face down with a gunshot wound to the head. Eyewitnesses described seeing his body in the road near Birmingham city centre. The father-of-four was alive when paramedics arrived at the scene, but was tragically pronounced

in lower-paid and part-time work, which makes progress up the career ladder difficult. Secondly, ethnic minority graduates in work earn significantly less than white graduates with the same qualifications, with the TUC saying that the pay gap between ethnic minorities and white people with the same qualifications actually greater for people with degrees compared to those with just ‘A’ Levels. The Observer study found that things are worse for ethnic minority women graduates. What’s more things get worse over time. Immediately after graduate the gap is 7-10%; three and a half years after graduation, most categories of ethnic minority women graduates will earn 12% to 15% less than white British graduates. Thirdly, if you live in a disadvantaged area after your degree things are particularly bleak. The Resolution Foundation found that the employment gap between the best and worst performing regions of the UK was 11%, but for black, Asian and minorityethnic (BAME) people the

n the past couple of years, graduates have been streaming into good jobs at a healthy pace, a welcome change from the bleak prospects that graduates faced during the recession. Recent starting salaries are quoted as being in the order of £28K (according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters, which surveys the top 100 graduate recruiters)—not to be sniffed at. Yet, behind this rosy statistic lies a picture of stark inequality. Firstly, ethnic minority graduates in general are

less likely to be in full-time employment than white graduates six months after graduating. The Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex for the Observer found that British ethnic minority graduates are between 5% and 15% less likely to be employed than their white British class-fellows. Pakistani and Bangladeshi graduates were particularly disadvantaged. According to ‘Race into Work’ (Business in the Community) Bangladeshi students were also more likely to end up

figure was 26%. If ethnic minority graduates can’t access first jobs that meet their level of ability or if they are limited to part-time, insecure and poorly-paid roles, this has a profound impact upon their lifetime earning potential. Infact, students who can’t find a job on graduation end up having lifetime incomes 20-25% less than graduates who are immediately employed. Ending up performing tasks under your ability is also very frustrating and soul-destroying, as any bright person will tell you. The reasons behind the disparities are beyond the scope of this article and ultimately depend on recruitment bias unconscious and conscious being tackled at all levels. However, it is interesting that, in the past, the rationale for black and ethnic minority people to end up in less-good jobs included our ‘lack of qualifications’ compared to white peers. This is now not only untrue but, as I’ve shown, actually the converse of current reality.

Birmingham was buzzing as crowds gathered for the exclusive five stop tour organized by Penny Appeal, in hopes of raising funds for the worthy Water Projects cause. The show got off to a humorous start as host for the evening, Abdullah Afzal donned the stage. Better known as Amjad from popular BBC sit-com Citizen Khan, the well-known actor tickled audiences with his Desi-centric jokes, poking fun at Punjabis. Talent was in abundance as the entertainment began with British-born nasheed artist Saif Adam, who lulled crowds with his melodic voice and charismatic persona. A surprise appearance by young nasheed artist Harris J, saw the two duet on an up-beat number. Last but not least, final act Outlandish graced the stage in their first UK appearance in over 10 years. Crowds were not left disappointed as the group gave an effortless performance, consisting of old favourites such as ‘Aicha’ and ‘Look into my Eyes.’ Despite the wealth of entertainment, the message of the night was not lost. An empowering speech by avid fundraiser Rizwan Hussain, gave an insight into the tireless work Penny Appeal volunteers are putting in to improve the lives of those less fortunate around the globe. The new project seeks to build upon the numerous challenges Penny Appeal have already undertaken by installing running water into homes, a luxury we here in the West often overlook. Penny Appeals Regional Fundraising Manager, Haroon Mota said: "On behalf of Penny Appeal, we'd like to say a huge thank you to all who attended in support of such a worthy cause. We take water for granted as it's so easy to turn on the tap, but in the developing world, dirty diseased water is one of the most common causes of death. At Penny Appeal, we're not just digging wells but we're transforming lives by strengthening and empowering communities. Birmingham really turned up tonight. Many thanks to all of our guests, supporters and volunteers." British Muslims TV’s Bilal Hassam added: “Today we are honoured to be at the melting point of what it means to be a global Muslim and celebrate culture. We had Muslims, Christians and people from all over the world singing, giving a positive uplifting wholesome message and that’s what we’re all about at British Muslims TV, Being confidently Muslims, Comfortably British and today really showcased that.”

The British Museum in London, is set to display Lord Krishna Devotional Textiles in its ‘Krishna and the Garden of Assam’ exhibition. Assam, despite being little known outside the Northeast of India, was the centre of a vibrant culture of devotion to the Hindu Deity Krishna. The exhibit sees the first showcase in Britain of the impressive cultural history of Indian state through its intricate textiles The main attraction at the exhibition includes the ‘Vrindavani Vastra’ which is comprised of twelve strips of

woven silk and captioned with scenes from the life of Krishna. These scenes are recorded in the 10th century text, the Bhagavata Purana, depicting the story of the life of Lord Krishna from when he lived in Vrindavan. The nine-meter-long masterpiece is the longest surviving artefact, dating back to the late 17th century and was made using a now extinct sophisticated weaving technology. The exhibition will also display dance mask of crane-demon Bakasura and body mask of serpent-demon Kaliya, both also made in Assam. A Rasilia film

will also be viewed as well as an illustrated book titled “Krishna in the Garden of Assam” which will accompany the exhibition according to curator Richard Blurton. Rajan Zed, President of Universal Society of Hinduism has commended The British Museum for showcasing the interesting Lord Krishna artefacts, stating “that art had a long and rich tradition in Hinduism and ancient Sanskrit.” Elements of the exhibition will be shown at the Chepstow Museum following the London display.

Hospital Destroyed In Syria Missile Strikes

A

Medicine Sans Frontieres (MSF) supported hospital has been destroyed, killing atleast seven people. The medical charity has posted pictures of the destroyed hospital online, which was destroyed in the attack on Monday 15th Febraury. Four missiles hit the hospital within a few minutes of each other, according to staff from the hospital. Other buildings and house were also struck in the area. The hospital was situated in the Idlib province in northern Syria. Massimiliano Rebaudengo, MSF’s Head of Mission said “The destruction on the MSF supported facility appears to be a deliberate attack on a health structure. “The destruction of this hospital deprives about 40,000 people of healthcare in this conflict zone.” A caretaker, five patients and a hospital guard were killed. In addition eight members of the hospital staff are missing,

presumed dead. The numbers of dead may increase as people are still missing. “We have beem moving scores of screaming children from the hospital.” Said medic Juma Rahal. The MSF has blamed the attack on Russia or Syrian government forces. Mr Rebaudengo also said: “The destruction of the hospital leaves the local population of around 40,000 people without access to medical services in an active zone of conflict” There were also reports on Monday morning of another two hospitals in Azaz city being attacked. These facilities were not supported by MSF. MSF has been supporting the hospital for the past six months and financially supporting the running costs. In December 2015 the hospital was rebuilt in a new location as it previously had been attacked three times. The MSF supported the reconstruction.

Jay Sean ft. Sean Paul 'Make My Love Go' After selling over 18 million singles since 2009, and his storied departure from Cash Money last year, Jay Sean is back on his home soil with his first single for Sony Music UK, with legendary Jamaican dancehall legend Sean Paul. This Month, millions of Jay Sean fans across the globe will be treated to an up-tempo slice of summery urban pop with ‘Make My Love Go’ which samples the classic US #1 Maxi Priest single ‘Close To You’. ‘Make My Love Go’ features an infectious beat and melody that is guaranteed to be ringing around clubs and beach bars all year. With Jay’s soulful voice and Sean Paul’s world famous toasting style, the track is the perfect way to brighten up the cold winter nights and start celebrating good times. The accompanying video, shot in LA, revolves around the guys performing at a Block Party with plenty of good old dancehall vibes! The two Sean’s last connected back in 2009 to create the global smash ‘Do You Remember’, which sold over 3.5 million singles worldwide and was top 10 in the US, UK, Japan, Australia and more. ‘Make My Love Go’ reignites a great partnership and promises to be the sound of the summer across the world. It was back in October 2014 that Jay Sean made the shock announcement

that he was leaving Cash Money, amidst much media speculation. His decision not only set him on a happier musical path, but his departure was followed by a further string of subsequent losses for the label, showing yet again that Sean truly has his finger on the pulse of the industry. Sean, who has now signed a worldwide distribution deal through Sony Music UK, returns to his homeland where his heart and roots are entrenched. The relationship with Sony Music UK is seen as a sign of the times, and a resurgence of the UK urban music scene, with other artists such as Craig David also returning ‘home’ and showing that the UK is still a powerhouse of talent and a force to be reckoned with. Jay says of the new track and deal with Sony: “I am really excited about the new partnership with Sony. This song is a particular favourite of ours and getting to work with Sean Paul again was not only fun but felt totally organic on this one. We smashed it last time we put out a song together and 'Make My Love Go' is that perfect blend of cool and fun. That dancehall drop goes hard! This will have everyone waiting for the sun to come back out!" Born and raised in West London, twice MOBO Award nominated, 16 time British Asian award-winning Jay Sean, has had global chart success since his first single ‘Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal)’ charted at #12 on the UK singles chart in 2004. He’s since gone on to sell millions of singles worldwide, with 4 Top 10 hits in the UK and many chart hits in Europe, Japan and the US. His Billboard #1 ‘Down’ was the first #1 single on the US charts by an urban British artist in history, and the first ever by an Asian heritage singer. He is also the only British artist in history to have both an English language Billboard #1 (‘Down’), and a Spanish language #1 with ‘Bebe Bonita’. In 2011, he duetted on Australian Jessica Mauboy’s Platinum certified single ‘What Happened To Us’ consolidating his position as a truly global artist and leader in his musical field. As a song writer Sean has also penned hits for several artists including the 7x platinum single 'Boom Boom' for Australian artist Justice Crew.

Pooja’s Family Problems FALAK

LETS THE RHYTHM FLOW After releasing hit Bollywood songs such as Mera Mann for Ayushmann Khurrana and Saajna for John Abraham, Falak is back with his brand new Bollywood Song “Kya Tujhe Ab Yeh Dil Bataye” for a Valentine Love Film SANAM RE. Sanam Re is set to release 12th February 2015 starring Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam & Rishi Kapoor in an intense Love story. Speaking to Falak “I am super excited about the release of my Brand New Bollwood Song Kya Tujhe Ab Yeh Dil Bataye. I have had an amazing response and loving the support from Pulkit & Yami stating this is their favourite song from the film. I am working on many big Bollywood projects and a lot of new singles, so really excited about this year.”

TV personality Pooja Bedi was left out of a family affair when her dad tied the knot for the fourth time. Kabir Bedi surprised guests on the night of his 70th birthday bash when he announced he would also be marrying long—time girl friend Parveen Dusanj, despite the fact that daughter Pooja was missing. The former Bollywood actress went on to explain in an interview that she had ongoing conflicts with her dad and the reason why the two

haven't been able to sort issues out is because of her animosity towards Dusanj. Despite being absent from the party, Pooja Definatley made her opinion known about her new step-mother with a less-than-cheerful Tweet. Pooja later deleted the tweet admitting it was a poor attempt at humour and posted a new one saying, "Deleted the last tweet on my dad @ iKabirBedi 4th marriage. Let's keep things positive. I Wish him the best !!!"

Sunny Leone Interview Trauma Sunny Leone is at the centre of a media whirlwind yet again, but this time not for the usual

reasons. In an interview with CNN-IBN’s Bhupendra Chaubey, the Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 actress was grilled about her past in the adult entertainment industry and how it may impact her future in Bollywood. In the nineteen minute interview, Chaubey continued to ask questions surrounding the starlets shady past including ‘Where do you think that Sunny Leone went wrong?’ and ‘How many people think of growing up to become a porn star?’ as if to draw a confession from Sunny about regrets from her past endeavours. The actress responded graciously by saying “Everything that I’ve done in my life has led me into this seat, so it’s a chain reaction that happens. It is stepping stone to something bigger and better. “That’s what life is about. When you’re young, the decisions you make lead you to who you are

as an adult. I don’t have any horror stories.” Bhupendra then went on to insinuate how women in India look at the actress as a threat to their husbands. Sunny simply replied: “Sorry I don’t want your husband at all, I have my own. I love him, he’s hot, he’s sexy, he’s very smart, talented and sorry ladies, I don’t want your husbands.” The journalist’s leading questions and abrupt interview style touched a nerve with famous friends and followers, gaining Leone some words of support on Twitter, and in true Sunny style, the actress posted a thank you message showing that she can’t be phased.

Indian Action at the Oscars This year’s Academy Awards are set to be an interesting affair with two Indian Directors making the cut. British-Indian director Asif Kapadia and American-Indian director Sanjay Patel are both in the running to win a coveted Academy Award for their recent film contributions. British born Kapadia is up for ‘Best Documentary Feature’ for his biopic ‘Amy’ based on the short and tragic life of singer Amy Winehouse. The explosive documentary depicts the starlet’s tragic decline into substance abuse and eventually her early

death. ‘Sanjay’s Super Team’ directed by Sanjay Patel, tells the story of a young, first-generation Indian-American boy whose fixation with western pop culture conflicts with his father’s Cultural roots. The mini motion picture is up for ‘Best Animated Short Film’ where it will compete alongside ‘Bear Story’, ‘We Can't Live Without Cosmos’ and ‘World of Tomorrow.’ All winners are set to be announced at the 88th edition of the awards held on 28 February and we’ve got our fingers crossed for the talented duo!

Disabled Rights Group (DRG) has openly condemned Nambiar for negative comments he made during an interview, where he commented on Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of a wheel-chair bound chess grandmaster. ith his music praised by online music magazine Music Crowns as “the rebirth of intellectual rap” hip hop marvel Kay Kumar is one of the most exciting artists on the scene at the moment. His latest single ‘SVDS’ is a stunning bilingual power beat that was recorded in both French and English. The video was shot in the paradisiacal landscape of Morocco which Kay found to be the perfect “cinematographic, crazy, wild, fun and adventurous” environment for it. Music website Streets Talkin summed up the result: “The video is breathtaking, his talent obvious, and the combination of English and French worth the listen.” Kay has been compared to musicians such as Kendrick Lamar, Eminem or French Montana although his unique take on the mixture of not only languages but also genres demonstrates a great portion of originality. Being keen on keeping his sound as diverse as possible Kay is using elements from hip hop to dance, R’n’B, techno/EDM

and rock in his upcoming album which he is currently recording in collaboration with artist Zak Le Ninja, who is also featured on ‘SVDS’. He describes the album as “playful, fun and commercial”. Born in Gwalior, India and raised in Birmingham, British/ Indian Kay Kumar has had a multicultural upbringing which he now impeccably translates into his musical open mindedness. He likes to challenge himself and dive into adventures. After describing his first journey to Morocco as an experience which allowed him to witness “some of the most beautiful and some of the most horrific things” he has ever seen in his life he is now planning on returning to the country for the video shoot of his second single ‘Belly Shake’. Kay’s aspirations have led to TV appearances, numerous shows and his songs being played on mainstream radio stations in various countries. He is keen on continuing his international approach and work with different artists all over the world. His work ethic and talent suggest bigger things to come and it probably won’t be long until we hear of Kay Kumar’s nomination for a music award as best new artist.

Born to be KING Beyoncé If thrillers with a Bollywood twist are your thing, then the latest film from producer Sudhir Sharma, directed by Satyajeet Puri - Born To Be King - will not disappoint! Set in stunning locations across London and India, the film explores the contentious subject of drug trafficking in Punjab, while addressing deep rooted corruption within the corridors of political powers. Featuring a cast of British and Indian talent, including Ateesh Randev, Puneet Issar, Deana Uppal, and Sonam Bajwa, the film follows the trials and tribulations of a young British man Balraj (Ateesh Randev), who goes to Punjab with his grandfather Bhagat Singh (Puneet Issar) to ‘find himself’, following years of living a directionless life with endless partying and frivolity. doing, he not only makes a new life for himself, but also brings about significant change for the local people. Born To Be King highlights the harsh realties of the underground drug world in India. Statistics show that there is one drug addict in 65 percent of families in the Punjab, and a worrying 73 percent of rural youth are addicted to drugs. These numbers are disproportionate to the level of care available; with only one rehabilitation centre per district, and only 12 anti-narcotic officers for 21 districts. Through a gripping yet entertaining plot, using comedy as a vehicle to display a need for social reform, the film is a window into the underground world of drug trafficking in the Punjab, and the Indian government’s apathy towards its prevention

Hindus have criticized Coldplay music-video hit single featuring Beyoncé Knowles and titled “Hymn For The Weekend”, saying it trivializes Hinduism. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that this party-anthem/club-song music-video unnecessarily dragged sacred Hindu concepts and symbols with no linkage to the lyrics/storyline. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, asked: “What was the connection of—depicting one person dressed as Lord Shiva holding a trishul and sitting on the pavement; three persons dressed as Hanumans and standing with gadas leaning against their shoulders; two saffron-clad sadhus (with one on the ground and another high on a bamboo stick holding a mala) sitting on the roadside, as if meditating, with incense burning in front of them— with the lyrics in the video like “drink from me?” Rajan Zed pointed out that

Hindus understood that the purpose of Coldplay-Beyoncé in this case apparently was not to denigrate Hinduism, but casual flirting sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols and hurting the devotees. Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Zed stated. Rajan Zed noted that inappropriate usage of Hindu symbols/concepts for mercantile greed or commercial/ other agendas was not okay as it hurt the devotees. Moreover, it might unnecessarily perpetuate caricaturing and stereotyping of Hinduism. Zed further said that Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it were disturbing for the followers.

Amrit Dasu A.k.a. Dasu first graced our ears with his first single ‘November’. Since then The 21 year old New York based R&B Pop sensation has released two great EP’s and a number of catchy tunes that continue to grab our attention. DASU’s debut single “Dil Kya Kare (Did I Love You?)” is co-written by Rishi Rich & DASU and produced by Rishi Rich. Using the sample of the timeless hit “Dil Kya Kare” from the 1975 classic `Julie’,

The accompanying music video, featuring the stunning Mallika Sherawat as the main female lead, was shot in some of the most exotic locales of Goa, which tells a heart wrenching tale of love which ends in a dramatic climax. Rishi Rich laces the track with DASU’s suave vocals turning it into a sensual R&B/Pop gem! The Asian Today speaks to the RnB sensation about all things DASU!

So you’ve dabbled in modelling and signing, you’re a bit of a triple threat, which do you prefer? Singing definitely, it’s like an escape fore me. I can get my feelings out to the world, but I love modelling as well. I would definitely go back into print modelling, but singing is my emotional release, my therapy.

What do you do in your downtime to chill out? I chill with my friends I write a lot of music and I play soccer, I’ve been playing all my life. That’s British Football by the way, I’ve been to Madrid and England so I watched teams play and I’m a big fan actually.

You speak English, Punjabi and Cantonese; would you ever release a song in another language? Yeah of course, I can speak them but I’m not sure if I’m a great writer in them. I usually only write in English, but I can sing them, Cantonese for sure. What was It like growing up in Hong Kong, was it as exciting as it looks? It was great; Hong Kong’s a beautiful city. It’s very modern, it’s the financial district of Asia, and so it was just great growing up there. There are a lot of different people from a lot of different backgrounds, Its heavily influenced from Britain so there’s a lot of English influence there. It’s very different, it’s exotic. So how did that influence your music and your creative outlets? When you’ve travelled all over and stayed away from your family for long periods of time, it kind of brings a lot out of you. When you’re younger, you don’t really understand what’s going on until you’re older. It’s like ‘wow, I can’t believe I actually went through that.’ Staying away from family really influenced me, its really heartbreaking being away from family.

Tanya G You’ve always been interested in Dance and singing. When did you realise you were actually pretty good?

I think I realised I was actually quiet good at dance when my dance group, named “Platinum” won our first award. This award was very much appreciated as it was against our main competitors at the time. The time I realised that I was quite good at singing was when the single I recorded with my ex girl group named “Fenix” got signed to Universal Records the single was called “Lady Baby”. I felt like this was a major personal achievement as I was singing lead vocal on the record. Being from a mixed background, do you draw inspiration from both cultures? I do draw inspiration from both my cultures, being half Irish and half Indian. I feel this has given me a unique insight in to everything I do as I have been heavily influences by both cultures and religion.

What’s your dream collaboration? I’d love to work with Chris Brown or Drake. I’ve always been into the hip-hop RnB scene. Rishi and I are trying to figure out a fusion sound for the South Asian community. In the long term, I’m looking to do more mainstream things. I don’t if that’s nice to say but I’m looking to be more mainstream. If you could have anyone’s music career, whose music career would you like to have? Justin Timberlake. When you aim high, you reach high places. We can sit here all day and talk about how cool he is! It must be a real ‘pinch me’ moment when your standing in front a crowd? Yeah, as cliché as it sounds, there’s no feeling like that. I’m waiting for the day people start singing my lyrics louder than I am. The crowd feeds off your energy.

Why were you away from family? Was it due to career choice? Yeah, it was career basically. My mom was living in Hong Kong, my dad was in America working, and it was the typical Indian story where the dad goes to make money for the family. Just seeing my parents living away from each other, it was sad but at the end of the day, that’s what’s written for us and that’s destiny. Where your parents supportive of your career choice? Very supportive, without my parent’s sacrifices and support I would never be where I am today. I’m really thankful for that.

What part of England have you been to? I’ve been to London and Birmingham. I visited near the Gurdwara, the Sikh temple. London’s to crowded for me I think, I think Birmingham was cooler. New York is one of my favourite cities in the world, but in the winter time id rather just be in Hong Kong.

Are you quite honest in your lyrics? Very, very honest, there’s songs that I go super personal, I don’t have a filter when I come to song lyrics. I’m not trying to hide who I am, if you like it, you like it, if you don’t, you don’t. If you weren’t a singer song-writer, what would you like to be? A Football player 100% What’s the thing you want audiences to know about you that they don’t know already? I think everybody knows everything about me, I don’t have any secrets

Indian-Irish born Tanya G is no stranger to the music industry. Previously a member of girl group Fen-Nix, the young starlet has shared the stage with the likes of JLS, Pussycat Dolls, Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah and N-Dubz. Now the songstress has gone solo with her debut album, set to be

released early 2016. With her wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry and her successful dance background, there’s no doubt that she’s set to be a household name. The Asian Today speaks to the up-and-coming star about her mixed heritage, her inspirations and her nerve-busting tips!

Do you still get nervous before performing? Any nerve-busting pre-performance tips or rituals?

I do get nervous yes, however I can calm my nerves with one main technique. For me, it’s knowing my performance so well I could do it with my eyes closed. I like to strategise what it is that I doing on stage so if I feel nervous, it cant effect me as my performance is so ingrained in my mind that I can do it no matter what I’m feeling. You’ve got your very own fashion line, what’s in the pipeline for that? That’s called “Figure Love” is a shaped wear range for any type of woman. It helps to accentuate your curves in the right places. I guess the inspiration for this has been the craze for the more curvy figures, ever since Kim K entered into the limelight and before that Jlo. The web sight is www.figurelove.co.uk.

What’s the one thing you want audiences to know about Tanya G that they don’t know already? That I’ve been there worn the T-shirt and come out of the other side. I faced things in my life that I wish I didn’t have to, but it’s made me a stronger person. Never give up and ALWAYS BELIVE that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. xxx

Men's London Fashion Week Trends

AW16 Men's Fashion Week

When it comes to fashion, women have a wide range of options but with gents, it's understatement to say even say they have limited options. Plus with males becoming ever more concerned about appearance and not only their muscles it's time they got some attention. I present to you, some of my favourite AW16 Men's Fashion Week. 1. Outerwear - A staple for the winter wardrobe, double-breasted coat with a polo neck. For that extra masculine professional touch add leather gloves and boots. 2. Casual - How can we forget a man’s secret weapon, dark denim shaded jeans are great as they usually go with most colours as seen below with the brown collared straight cut jacket. 3. Smart-Casual - Thick textured cardigan jackets with a centre zip are great for the mild weather and ideal for that smart casual look. After all you may want to put your suit blazer away if you've got a date and have an alternative option for after work. I hope you enjoyed the practical, British and very modern day masculine fashion trends.

Dolce and Gabanna have built their illustrious brand upon the form-fitting gowns, worn by A-list actresses and fashionistas worldwide. Now the esteemed fashion-house has branched out into an entirely new range of clothing, with their new abaya and hijaab range. The Italian brand launched their enticing new range of delicately designed flowing floor-length gowns this month, in a new wave of modest clothing, targeted at Muslim consumers. With their staple prints and elegant silhouettes, D&G have added a dramatic femininity to what was generally considered a demure outfit choice to the masses. The range was revealed via the Arabian website Style.com, who said the collection “celebrates the inimitable dolce vita that is distinct to us in the Arab world.” Despite being modest in nature, the range is still distinctive to D&G with a touch of the daisies, lemons, and playful polka dots that are synonymous with the brand’s Spring 2016 collection. The designer abayas and hijabs are available in sheer georgette and satin weave charmeuse fabrics, with D&G’s signature lace detailing a prominent feature. Neutral colours paired with bold black lace echoes the brands penchant for a striking yet subtle effect. The exclusive collection has received widespread praise by fashion lovers everywhere. Melissa Marsella writes on Instagram: “It's so amazing to see you create this. There are a lot of lovely ladies that will look and feel absolutely incredible because of you” and Philistine Ayad took to twitter to thank the designers: “for seeing that there is beauty in our differences. #MuslimandProud.”

Dolce & Gabanna released their long-awaited range of designer Abayas and hijaabs

The modest movement should come as no shock to western audiences. With an up-rise of credible hijaab bearing fashionistas, the prominence of modest fashion has been demystified for the formally unacquainted. High-street giants H &M made headlines last year, when they opted to use a Hijaab clad model for an ad campaign. 23-year-old Mariah Idrissi broke ground by representing the ever increasing, fashion conscious Muslim Youth. The young model stated: "It always feels like women who wear hijab are ignored when it comes to fashion. Our style, in a way, hasn't really mattered, so it's amazing that a brand that as big as H&M has recognized the way we wear hijaab." Clearly this is a demographic retailers should keep their eye on as reports have shown that retail growth in the Arab world is outpacing Asia and Russia. In 2013, Arab women spent a staggering $266 billion on clothing and shoes, and that figure is set to reach $484 billion by 2019. It seems other Large designers are following in D&G’s fashion footsteps with Monique Lhuillier designing a range of caftans for the luxury online retailer Moda Operandi, as well as Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY launching capsule collections of flowing modest clothing. While high-street stores like Zara and Mango have also offered specially themed collections during the holy month of Ramadan.

M6 Closure

Birmingham’s M6 junction and 5 slip roads set to be closed for up to 6 weeks.

Heavy traffic is expected at one of the busiest junctions, as roadworks begins at the southbound slip road at junction 5 of the motorway. Highways England has said the congested road is set to be closed for up to 25 weeks as road-works have gone underway. The road-works which began in early January, were initially set to begin last year, but construction was postponed due to other projects over-running. Diversion have been put in place for drivers, with road users needing to travel either north or south on the motorway being urged to use the A38 through Minworth, to junction 9 of the M42. Those travelling in either direction of the M6, are being encourage to use the A38 to junction 6 of the motorway. The road-works come while

maintenance is still ongoing at junction 6 of the M6 at the A38M Aston Expressway and Spaghetti Junction, where work is not likely to be completed until late spring this year. The northbound slip road at the M6 junction is also expected to be closed overnight for one week from the 11th of January. The M6 Gravely Hill interchange also faces closures, as scheduled road-works to replace waterproofing was halted, when the Highways Agency found erosion, including rods supporting concrete, which means additional work is required before the developments can take place. Parts of Birmingham City Centre as also restricted to traffic, as road-works continue as part of the £500 million Paradise Circus improvement scheme.

Birmingham Bus Fines

Abused E

x MP reveals motorists’ fines, totalling more than £6 million, for driving in Birmingham bus lanes, are being used by the council to fund public services. Cameras were installed in ten different locations within Birmingham city centre, including Bull Street, Moor Street and St. Martins Queensway in 2013, with two more being added in 2014. A BBC Freedom of Information Request (FOI) showed that, within the first two years of operation, speed cameras were used to issue 213,774 Penalty Charge Notices (PCN’s) racking up a sum of £6,157,359 of fines from September 2013 to December 2015. Former Liberal Democrat John Hemming exposed how the council had been “economical with the truth” on how the accumulated fines would be used.

Mean while Bristol airport was labelled the most expensive airport to get to in the UK, costing three times more than those travelling to Birmingham. Despite the airport being closer to the city centre, Bristol Airport lacks train access, meaning travellers are forced to fork out for a bus or taxi, with average taxi-fare from Bristol city centre to the airport reaching £22. Voucherbox spokesman Shane Forster said: “Our advice to those booking flights is always to calculate the overall cost of your journey, including get to and from their journeys.”

The FOI revealed that St Martins Queensway to Moor Street Queensway was the most active, with a staggering 74,076 fines being issued, as well as Priory Queensway southbound to Old Square accumulating 48,113 fines and 31,262 fines being issued between Priory Queensway southbound to Masshouse Lane. When the speed cameras were first installed, the then Labour-run government denied claims that it was a “money making” scheme, adding that all funds would go into Transport. In a reply to the BBC request, the council explained that the money raised had not been utilised for any such projects, stating "The net surpluses from the Bus Lane Enforcement (i.e. total income less expenditure) have been taken to reserves and have not yet been spent on any specific project.

"Work is progressing to identify appropriate highways/transportation projects to fund.” Mr Hemming, former Birmingham Yardley MP, disagreed with the council’s statement, adding: "It's clear this was a route for the council to raise money. "This money has just gone in the cocoa tin, it's not reserved for transport. We should be using taxes to fund public services, not fines." Bus Lane restrictions were initially introduced by the council to improve bus reliability, reduce CO2 emissions and increase road safety. In its reply to the BBC, The council stated it had "always made clear" PCNs were not to make money but to reduce congestion and emissions.” In February 2014, the council came under-fire as bus lane signs were found to be inadequate and confusing at three of the ten restricted locations, causing the authority to introduce extra signage between April and June 2014.

THE ASIAN TODAY HEALTH COLUMN

QUITTING SMOKING Sarah Stables, Stop Smoking Coordinator at Solihull Hospital, on the benefits of quitting smoking.

With around 100,000 people dying from smoking a year, it is one of the nation’s biggest causes of death. Did you know each cigarette has around 4,000 chemicals, many of which are known to be toxic? Ammonia, tar, carbon monoxide and arsenic are some of the chemicals you would breathe in when smoking. Smoking can damage your heart and blood circulation, brain as well as your lungs and cause diseases including heart disease, cervical cancer, lung cancer and stroke. Chewing smokeless tobacco such as paan or gutkha is popular amongst people from south Asian communities. All forms of tobacco can damage your health and using smokeless tobacco raises the risk of mouth cancer. Smoking bidi and shisha can also increase your risk of cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease. The benefits of not smoking are huge and quitting smoking can make a real difference to your lifestyle and health. Here are some of the benefits of giving up smoking: • Better breathing – Giving up smoking will allow you to breathe more easily and cough less. Lung capacity can also increase by up to 10 percent within nine months of giving up. • Longer life – Stopping smoking can not only add years to your life, it can also improve your chances of living a diseasefree and mobile life. • Younger looking skin – The skin of a non-smoker gets more nutrients and without these nutrients skin can start looking sallow. • Improved fertility – Non smokers find it easier to get pregnant and have a reduced chance of having a miscarriage. Being a nonsmoker also improves the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby. • More energy – Within two to 12 weeks of stopping

smoking your circulation will improve and as a result, you will be able to walk and run much easier. Giving up smoking can also boost your immune system. Making small changes to your lifestyle can play a part in helping you quit. Here are some tips to help you give up smoking. Firstly think positive. Make a plan to stop smoking and stick to it. Create a list of reasons as to why you want to quit. Keep the list in a place where you can see it. Chances of having cancer, heart attacks or stroke as well as your blood pressure going down are some of the reasons you may wish to include on your list. Talk to your friends and family for support. Why not suggest to other smokers you know that you give up together? The more support and encouragement you can get the better. Your local Stop Smoking Service will be able to provide expert advice and support to help you stop smoking. Free ‘Quit Kits’ can be picked up at local pharmacies. The kits will include practical tools and advice to help you quit. Avoid temptation. It might be helpful to avoid situations where you usually smoke. Don’t give in to the temptation to have just one cigarette. Try to distract yourself by doing something else instead. You can get nicotine replacement therapy for free or on prescription from your local NHS Stop Smoking Service or GP. Using nicotine patches will help reduce everyday cravings and you can also use nasal spray, gum, lozenges, inhalator or mouth spray for sudden cravings.

ith the ever rising popularity of shisha amongst the Asian youth, it seems one can’t turn a corner without running into a new Hookah haunt. With swanky shisha bars and lounges becoming ever-present on our streets, it’s no wonder more and more of the new generation are hooking on to the habit. The molasses-based tobacco concoction has become all-the-rage, reviving what was once considered an old tradition of Arab decent. The multi-stemmed instrument is used to

It’s time to defog the facts about shisha. An investigation into the air quality inside 12 shisha bars across the city, lead researchers to find dangerous levels of carbon monoxide present in the air of bars in Birmingham. Often linked to asthma, lung cancer and low birth rate, excessive amounts of the gas can lead to oxygen depletion in haemoglobin in the blood, causing dizziness, shortness of breath, confusion and even loss of consciousness and death. Longer term exposure to carbon monoxide can cause chronic bronchitis as well as increased mortality from lung cancer and heart disease. According to results, it not only affects those within the shisha premises. Air pollution is also spilling out onto the streets, meaning passers-by are also inhaling high levels of carbon monoxide and known carcinogen, tobacco though smoke. Air inside shisha bars is said to be even more polluted then the levels recorded in bars and pubs before the smoking ban, introduced in 2007. Jacqui Kennedy, acting strategic director of place for the city council, said: “This study shows a worrying lack of awareness of the risks from premises and staff, as well as those who visit shisha bars. “Given the success of the smoking ban, which has been in place for nearly a decade, compliance with the spirit of the smoke-free law is paramount in order to protect the health of non-smokers and staff, by reducing their exposure to second-hand smoke.” A common misconception amongst shisha users and bar staff alike is that shisha is less damaging to health then normal cigarettes, due to the fact that it is filtered through water, but this simply couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, smoking shisha for up to an hour can contain the same amount of tobacco as smoking 100 cigarettes. On earlier visits, it was found that bar managers were unaware of the associated health risks of hookah.

vaporize and smoke flavoured tobacco called shisha, which is sweetened with all kinds of enticing flavours including Bubble-gum, Pineapple and Blueberry –Vanilla. With so much variety in fun and flavour, it’s no wonder Shisha bars are seeing a growth in demand. ...But you know what they say, there’s no smoke without fire. It seems the Hookah lounge isn’t quite as harmless as you might think. In the first-ever study of its kind, researchers at the University of Birmingham looked into what’s really lurking in air of the shisha bars across the city. According to researchers, 75 per cent of bar owners did not recognise the smoke from shisha pipes was a hazard to their customers or staff, nor the importance for smoking areas to be open to the air. Dr Juana Maria Delgado-Saborit, from the University of Birmingham, said: “The rise in popularity of shisha premises in UK and worldwide and the lack of awareness of the risks associated with shisha smoke, is an emerging area of interest and one that needs to be better understood. “Both smoking shisha and being exposed to shisha environment smoke have the potential to cause short and long term health effects similar to those associated with tobacco smoke and traffic air pollution.

Facts & Figures There are currently 24 shisha bars operating in the city There is 43 times as much particle matter in a shisha bar than on a busy road Carbon monoxide levels were 11 times higher in shisha bars than outdoor levels in Birmingham, while there was eight times as much other particle matter

Air particle levels were 13 times greater in the shisha bars than pubs and restaurants, with nine times the carbon monoxide found even before the smoking ban was put in place. The air quality was also nearly twice as high as levels recorded in Beijing

The Future is Now

H

igh Speed 2’s imminent release of £7 Billion represents the biggest tender for procurement in the history of the UK. £3 Billion is ring fenced for Greater Birmingham. The coming of HS2 places Greater Birmingham in Zone 5 on the London Underground Map. West Brom against West Ham will be a derby game in a decade. I’m trying to put into context the opportunity this once in a generation project offers. HS2 is like winning the Olympics, The World Cup and then winning the Olympics again. HS2 expects 700 Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and SME (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) companies in its supply chain. Consider the opportunities for businesses servicing this supply chain; the restaurants, hotels, retail, media, conference centres and entertainment. HS2 is an injection of confidence and investment creating and safeguarding 100,000 jobs. There is a California gold rush on the horizon and fortunes are there to be made. HS2 links London to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham, then North in a Y shaped formation to Manchester and Leeds. The UK will enjoy increased capacity and connection at high speed. For Greater Birmingham, commuter belts will expand to include Bearwood to Barnet, Erdington to Ealing, Handsworth to Wandsworth, but this is a future opportunity. The opportunities for the next decade are those in and around engineering and the injection of funds into the region from those jobs in engineering. London Euston to Birmingham Airport will be 38 minutes. This effectively makes Birmingham Airport a London airport. There is little appetite for a third runway at Heathrow. Boris doesn’t

Anjums Butler

want it neither does the next Conservative London Mayor candidate, Zac Goldsmith. An inspired solution for increasing airport capacity in the South East is the 38 minute HS2 journey from Euston to Birmingham Airport. It will take 14 minutes longer to get from Euston to Heathrow than from Euston to Birmingham Airport. Little surprise, Birmingham Airport is announcing 11 new airlines this year. Birmingham Airport presently serves a million passengers a month but has the capacity to carry double that number. With increased connectivity, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), celebrating its 40th birthday this year will attract increasing conference footfall. The NEC is already the busiest exhibition hall in the UK. It has been for its entire 40 year history. HS2 will serve both Birmingham Airport and The NEC before gliding into an evolved Birmingham city centre at Curzon Street. And in a decade, what will our city centre resemble? For that you need to close your eyes and imagine. An expanded Metro System will link Curzon Street to Birmingham New Street, the redesigned train station giving Brum the gateway it has long deserved. A short walk to Paradise, a redevelopment where the demolished Central Library once occupied. Paradise links Victoria Square and Centenary Square. Here the Library of Birmingham stands shoulder to shoulder with The Birmingham REP and the International Conference Centre linked to Hyatt Regency. Centenary Square will also be home to HSBC’s UK Retail Headquarters with 2000 people. Broad Street, now part of Westside BID will continue the Metro line towards Five Ways where Seven Capital have a portfolio of property investments including The Park Regis

Hotel and a Residential Tower. HS2 will serve a city that not only has more canals than Venice but more seats of learning than Florence. There are six Universities in Birmingham, vital for a city with the youngest population in Europe. 177 different nationalities call Birmingham their home. Little surprise the St Patrick’s Day Parade is the third largest in the world, the Chinese New Year celebrations attract 39,000 in Southside and the Vaisakhi Mela in Handsworh Park is the largest Sikh festival in the world outside India. HS2 delivers connections to people who are no strangers to connecting. The two Trillion dollar corporation, Deutsche Bank has moved its back office support to Birmingham. These decisions are not made lightly and are fueled by confidence in what a city like Birmingham is and what a city it can grow to be. Birmingham is home to almost 10% of the UK’s Michelin Star Restaurants outside London. It has five. The Michelin Star status is a platform in a city not short of truly great restaurants. Each of these establishments will be one of many beneficiaries in the economic expansion HS2 will bring. The construction phase of HS2 will increase residency in the city centre. Demand for apartments allowing city workers to walk to their desks will inspire Birmingham to look to the skies. The Skyscrapers are coming. Royal ascent for HS2 is expected towards the end of 2016. The skyline of Birmingham city centre will be peppered with cranes in 2017. The 48 minute journey between Birmingham and London departs in 2026. The next chapter in Birmingham’s story is waiting to be written. Is your pencil sharpened?

JAS SANSI The Thinking Man's Mouthpiece Photographer and LoveBrum trustee, Jas Sansi brings a dose of all things Birmingham. With an unprecedented love of the city and its unique diverseness, he brings his 6-foot passion to The Asian Today.

LOVEBRUM

I’d like to dedicate this month’s column to a Greater Birmingham movement where I am lucky enough to be a trustee. It has in 12 months captured the hearts, minds and imagination of many here in the second city, LoveBrum. This is taken from the website’s homepage: ‘LoveBrum is a charity that engages with local people and businesses to build an even better Birmingham. It shines a light on hidden projects and charities doing good in the city. LoveBrum supporters vote on live projects and everyone has a say in which projects are supported, meaning all funds raised help to boost the local charitable economy and the best part is, every penny raised from individual memberships and fundraising goes straight to the causes.’ As a trustee, my role focuses on Diversity and Equality. The trustees of LoveBrum understand it is vital LoveBrum communicates it’s vision to all the region. We speak to everyone or we speak to no one. 177 different nationalities call Greater Birmingham home and LoveBrum seeks to reach out to all 177. And that includes you. With an influential LGBT

(lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community) here in Greater Birmingham, LoveBrum aspires to be a voice that reflects the demographic of the city region. And central to an ethos of equality, LoveBrum places gender equality as strategically vital to its objective of making Birmingham better. History is no lesson for gender equality. As an international community, human beings have placed the role of women below and behind that of men. If history had rejected the exploitation of women, choosing instead to exploit the best talent, intelligence and imagination, imagine where we, as a planet would be now. LoveBrum does not promise to solve the challenges faced by our planet, but the movement does promise to be a helping hand locally. And we all know, the longest journey begins with the first step. Individual membership is £20 per year, all of which goes to the projects you vote for. Corporate and Patron membership packages are available. Why learning to speak your mother tongue is important

22/07/2015 15:36:01

I wish I had listened to my parents. As is the case with most things, this realisation comes too late in life. In this instance, it relates to learning a language. I never realised the importance of language until three years ago when I bought Word360 Language Services. Word360 provides interpreting and translation services, helping businesses to communicate internationally and within ethnic minority communities. We have over 2000 linguists speaking over 250 languages and dialects between them. I am in awe of these multilingual experts who can effortlessly speak different languages and make money from it. Like me, many of our teams are bilingual having been brought up in England but with an ethnic background.

Landlords must beware of new legislation protecting tenants

Spectra Property Services are Licenced ARLA Letting agents. The firm’s qualified property managers are trained and up-to-date with the changes in the housing regulation. The firm offers a free service to check documentation and remedy any shortcomings. Contact Spectra on 0121 444 5252 or info@spectra-property.co.uk. Landlords who are having troubles with tenants, such as damage to property, could ordinarily serve them with a section 21 notice and remove them. If a tenancy started before the 1 October 2015, that could be the right course of action – but for tenancies commencing after that date, the law has changed, and landlords need to take expert advice. According to letting agent Spectra Property Services, prior to 1 October, there were just two factors that invalidated a section 21. These are failure to protect the tenant's deposit and failure to comply with HMO licensing regulations. From 1 October, a longer list of invalidating factors came into being, as a result of changes made to the housing law in England. The Deregulation Act 2015 introduced a number of important changes concerning the serving a section 21 notice in order to regain possession of a property. These changes increased the level of protection afforded tenants and placed extra burdens on landlords, who now face more obstacles in the way of seeking possession. Landlords now need to ensure they have: protected the tenant's deposit; complied with the HMO regulations; dealt with a tenant's maintenance complaints; provided the tenant with a valid EPC; given the tenant a copy of the current gas safety certificate;

www.mahirs.com

www.hsbc.co.uk

provided the tenant with a copy of ‘How to Rent: The checklist for renting in England’, published by the Department for Communities and Local Government. If you a landlord has missed out on any of the above, it's most likely that a section 21 notice is invalid and it will be difficult evict the tenant. How then can a landlord safeguard himself? When a complaint is received by a landlord or his agent, an adequate response must be provided within 14 days. An adequate response is one which states what remedial work will take place, and a reasonable time frame for completion of the work. A verbal complaint is enough to render a section 21 invalid. In a situation where a tenant complains verbally, it becomes difficult for a landlord or his agent to produce evidence of whether or not they received a complaint. And if the tenant takes his or her complaint to the local authority, they can issue a relevant notice (also known as an emergency remedial action notice) which would mean that a section 21 notice cannot be served for another six months. Therefore, to make sure that tenants do not fabricate a complaint, landlord or their agents should always get everything in writing. It is essential that you seek advice and ensure that none of the above affects your case.

I however, am a business woman not a linguist. My earliest memory of learning a language, was being dragged to Gujarati classes with my brother. Every week we would sit in a classroom with children from the same circumstance and write out a foreign alphabet and recite the names of things like fruit and vegetables in Gujarati. Every week we bought home complaints from the teachers that we were not concentrating and disruptive. We had no interest. My parents were determined to make us multilingual but after 5 years of lessons they finally gave up. Today, I speak ‘Gujlish’ – a mix of Gujarati and English and can just about spell my name in Gujarati. Needless to say, language is not my forte.

Nowadays we live in a multicultural society. There are over 138 spoken languages spoken in Birmingham alone. Being able to speak another language is beneficial in Birmingham as much as it would be abroad. With Chinese investors picking up property around the city and with HS2 bringing us closer to the Eurotunnel, Birmingham poses to become a multicultural mecca of international business, language and culture. Parcelforce recently had all their internal communications translated by us into community languages such as Punjabi, Urdu and Polish because this was the first language of much of their workforce. A survey by the Common Sense Advisory highlighted that 72.4% of consumers said they would be more

likely to buy a product with information in their own language. With such diversity across our city, it is evident that English may not be enough. Being able to speak another language adds an invaluable string to your bow and to learn at an early age means that you are more receptive to learning languages later in life. National curriculums have always focused on European languages and English has always been the language for Business. But I would argue that knowing any language has a purpose. Our business is regularly recruiting linguists for community languages such as Bengali, Urdu and Gujarati but the shortage is apparent. So this weekend, I will be dragging my daughter to Gujarati class.

Top Hotels Celebrate New Partnership with ABCC

T

wo of Birmingham’s premier hotels – Malmaison and Hotel du Vin – have joined the ranks of leading corporate organisations to support the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) as Premier + Partners. Welcoming them on Board, ABCC president Saqib Bhatti said: “The partnership has brought together three of Birmingham’s leading brands – the ABCC, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin – and we look forward to progressing our future co-operation.” He added: “We first established links with Malmaison and Hotel du Vin a couple of years ago and are delighted that our relationship has now developed into a more permanent arrangement.” Damian Goom, general manager of Malmaison, said that the hotel had previously hosted functions for ABCC, including after-party celebrations following its annual dinner, while Tony Elvin, general manager at Hotel du Vin, said that he also looked forward to strengthening

its ties with ABCC. “Since being recommended to get involved with ABCC by two business associates we have been able to appreciate, at first-hand, the importance of its role within the community,” added Tony. Damian commented: “Both Malmaison and Hotel du Vin have developed a reputation as premier establishments in a ‘stand out’ city and, as Birmingham continues to attract increasing numbers of tourists, our mission is to maintain our position as a leading provider of quality hotel accommodation.” Both hotels are part of Frasers Hospitality Group, which, since its inception in 1998, has developed into a global organisation with more than 130 properties in 78 major cities around the world. Charity helps city youngster with his school studies A Birmingham charity specialising in supporting blind and partially sighted people is appealing to the • Tuaib Hussain Asian business community for help in continuing to raise much needed funds those such as Tuaib Hussain. That support now means primary school pupil Tuaib, from Edgbaston, has every reason to enjoy doing his homework. The youngster, diagnosed with a genetic

condition three years ago that left him with low vision in his left eye, has been provided with a special electronic magnifier which enables him to see his schoolwork much more clearly. His mother, Hamida Begum, said: “Tuaib really likes his magnifier and it has made a big difference to him. He says it is brilliant and he can now see things on it which means he is able to do his homework." Focus Birmingham, based in Harborne, operates a day care centre working with adults with visual impairment and complex disabilities from the age of 19, also provides community support across Birmingham. The charity is the foremost provider of specialist sight services in the region, ranging

from its Low Vision Centre to community services team, but it needs support to further develop its ‘Centre of Excellence’ where professional support can be readily accessed. It recently ran a series of Bollywood dance classes as part of a community project aimed at improving exercise and boosting confidence and independence to those living with and facing sight loss. The project also involved cookery lessons, going on a shopping trip, and accessing the arts with a visit to a theatre. A First for Europe

Birmingham welcomes £50 million Park Regis Hotel

B

irmingham will soon become the first city in Europe to be home to a Park Regis Hotel, joining the likes of Sydney, Singapore and Dubai to feature this super luxurious international hotel. The 17th Park Regis in the world, the £50 million establishment will be based at the former Auchinleck House, Five Ways and, with work already well underway, the hotel is set to open its doors in late March. Comprising of 253 rooms, including a giant Presidential suite, the hotel will also have a number of executive meeting rooms, two restaurants, a gin bar, a saki bar, spa and gym. The main entrance to Birmingham’s latest premium hotel will take guests directly to the fourth floor, to the main reception area and the hotel bar terrace and restaurant. Soon to be a jewel in the crown of Birmingham’s Broad Street, the luxurious complex will showcase a number of tributes to all things Birmingham, from the restaurant set to be named 1565 after the Five Ways road network

and roundabout to the executive meeting rooms on the 14th floor to be named in homage to the city’s industrialists. Taller than The Cube building, the Park Regis will feature on its 16th floor the city’s second rooftop restaurant and bar, with views on offer rivalling those of The Cube’s Marco Pierre White restaurant. The Japanese pan Asian restaurant Rofuto will share the top floor with the Saki bar, with spellbinding views of south Birmingham landmarks the likes of St Andrews stadium being on offer. Though the hotel restaurant and bar welcome both guests and the public alike, the Rofuto will employ a strict prebooking only policy and will open solely during the evening. Stuart Broster, director at Then Hospitality said: “The 16th floor will be an altogether more exclusive experience. It won’t be somewhere that anyone out on Broad Street can simply walk into. “We’re lucky that we’re a fairly big hotel compared to other places so we’re confident a lot of our guests will use the Rofuto which they can of course access through the hotel. “But of course we hope to see it as to be very popular with Brummies who want something that little bit more different and special to other places in Birmingham.”

Low Wages and High Welfare Bills Blight Birmingham Birmingham has been labelled a “low wage, high welfare” city in a major new study. Centre for Cities, a major think tank, has warned in its annual “Cities Outlook” report that the city has fallen behind other more successful British cities. Despite the recent achievements celebrated by Birmingham, including the unveiling of Grand Central shopping centre alongside the world-class New Street rail station, the city continues to fail in creating new jobs, offering good wages and attracting new residents. Cities currently faring better than the Birmingham “city region” – including Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton – include Reading, Milton Keynes, Edinburgh, Cambridge and London, all of which enjoy relatively high wages coupled with low levels of welfare spending. The average weekly workplace

wage in cities across the country exceeded the UK’s average of £508, with 2015 seeing employers take home £545 a week in ages. London, with the highest weekly salary in the country, was not the only city where employees were well paid. The average weekly wage in Milton Keynes was £577, in Derby it was £588 whilst residents in Reading took home £619. Adding to the problem, Birmingham also carries a high welfare bill, with the spending per person on benefits such as Housing Benefits, Jobseekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance and tax credits being significantly greater than that of other cities. Following the recently published report, the Centre for Cities has advised the Government to aid the region in improving its skills as well as to provide local councils with further funding as well as the power to create new jobs.

Amazon Expands UK Workforce

Amazon is set to increase its UK-based workforce by over two thousand people this year. In a bid to expand its European operations, the company is planning to employ an additional 2,500 permanent staff members in the coming months. Bringing its total number of UK employees to 14,000, the online retailer has said the jobs would concern its business operations in the country. Though many of the posts to be filled this year will be in the firm’s vast warehouses, sorting and dispatching goods, the company is eager to emphasise that they will also require highly skilled individuals to fulfil research and development roles. Having already invested over £4.6bn in Britain in infrastructure as well as operations since 2010, the firm’s new head office in London is currently under construction and it is intended for these jobs to fill posts there as well as at three other research and

development centres, in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London. The customer service centre in Edinburgh will also see some new intakes. Additional staff will be expected to fulfil roles in Amazon’s 10 warehouses as well in local delivery centres. An exciting time for the company’s operations in the country, this year could also see fresh recruits join the company’s new Londonbased fashion photography studio and the data centres for the new Amazon Web Services set to launch next year will also require staffing. Amazon UK’s managing director, Christopher North, said: “Britain has a worldclass tech sector with a reputation for innovation and excellence.” “These new jobs we are creating up and down the country are testament to the quality of the workforce in the UK and our confidence in its economy, which we are proud to support through our continued investments.”

Car sales hit an all-time high in the UK

New car registrations in the UK hit an all-time record last year, latest trade industry figures have revealed. Approximately 2.63 million new vehicles were registered in 2015, amounting to an increase of 6% on 2014, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Sales have been driven by stronger consumer confidence, cheap finance and special deals, leading to the fourth consecutive year of growth for the motor industry. The previous record for sales in Britain was set before the 2007-8 financial crisis, in 2003, when 2.58 million cars were sold. Recent years have seen a gradual recovery in the UK, with 2014 seeing a return to pre-crisis levels at 2.48 million.

Mobility Cars Repossessed

Almost 14,000 disabled individuals have lost access to their mobility cars following recent changes in government welfare. The Mobility Scheme allows disabled people to use government funding to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair. However, almost half of the individuals being reassessed under the new welfare scheme have lost their motability vehicle. Though the government has said the new process is fairer than its predecessor, campaigners have warned that the withdrawal of Motability vehicles could lead to a loss of independence.

UK Welcomes Fuel Price Free-Fall Fuel prices in the UK have fallen significantly in recent months, with the price per litre expected to dip as low as 86 pence in this year. At present, the cost per litre of petrol and diesel amount to 102p/103p

on average, with some forecourts charging under 100p. Despite being a welcome landmark for most motorists, RAC Fuel Spokesman Simon Williams has advised drivers to remain vigilant.

Simon Williams, said: “With no apparent end in sight to the free-falling price of oil, motorists can expect some really low fuel prices in 2016." “Breaking through the pound per-litre price point for both petrol and diesel was clearly a welcome landmark.” He cautioned that there

was “a limit to how low prices can go as tax. “Fuel duty at 57.95p perlitre and VAT on the total price, including fuel duty – make up the lion’s share of the price of a litre.” He added: “Even if the fuel was given away and the retailers didn’t take a margin, the price of a litre would still be 70p”.

Evocative & Exhilarating Land Rover’s Exclusive Convertible Exudes a Staunch Stoicism to its Predecessors

L

and Rover has launched the world’s first premium compact SUV convertible. Set to appear in Britain in spring, the Evoque Convertible is marked with a guide price of £47,500. The natural successor to a stream of releases by Land Rover, of regular SUVs, coupe-SUVs and performance SUVs, the Evoque Convertible has been keenly positioned by the company as the world’s first luxury SUV. Packaged as a different breed of convertible to the open-top version of working Land Rover Defenders which have graced roads for years now – the luxury model is priced to match that of a luxury car. Planned for release with the onset of warmer weather, the Evoque favours a fabric roof that folds up or away in less than 20 seconds, over a folding hard-top, with the latter being considered ill-fitting to the convertible for packaging and design reasons. As with most modern convertibles, the Evoque seats only four people, with the hood folding mechanism claiming space of the fifth. Slightly longer than the hard-top version, at 4,370mm, and a little wider too, the convertible also sees a little extra weight, with some diesel models weighing in an additional 277kg. The weight gain is caused by extra strengthening around the A-pillars and under-body of the convertible, aimed to keep the car’s structural rigidity.
