Asian Business Chamber of Commerce chairman Nasir Awan has been appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands

Continued from front page Medal, for services to business and International Trade. Awan is also on the school governing body of a school in Aston, which has now been placed among the top 1% of primary schools in the UK, and was also elected to the Chair of Governors. He also served as the director of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce as well as the President of the Asian Chamber of Commerce. His appointment as Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands was announced by Lord Lieutenant John Crabtree, the representative of the Queen for the county. As Lord Lieutenant, Crabtree helps oversee Royal Visits, Honours, awards for Voluntary services in the community and Queens awards for enterprise and industry. In addition, he has the task of looking after community events or Citizen Ceremonies, plus other

commitments. The Lord Lieutenant then appoints Deputy Lieutenants who attend in his place should he not be able to serve, as such Nasir Awan would have the role of representing Her Majesty to the Midlands. One of Awan’s specific tasks includes finding people to award the Queen’s Honors to. When asked what Awan typically looks for, he replied: “I have been assigned the task to promote more of the community and in putting them forward for Honours, as to engage with groups that generally tend to carry on unnoticed in their own community doing much good work.” The new role is highly inspirational for other Asians from the Midlands who may be struggling to achieve their goals or feel as though the cards may be stacked against them. Unfortunately, the Honours is one area in which the contribution, talent and skill of the Asian population of the nation is also not properly reflected.

Awan said, “Every year when honours are given, the Asian community does miss out proportionally, as the BME community make up 8% of the nation but receive less than 2% of honours and awards.” As for those in the Midlands, despite Brexit, funding cuts and other looming vices, the region and its second city Birmingham appear to be faring quite well, especially in regard to business. We asked Awan what he believes the Midlands needs to do push forward. He replied, “We need to make more noise about the many positive aspects and work in our communities. We are a community that contributes over £30 billion into the economy and many are in SME businesses that are supporting up to 3 generations.” Awan has given back to the Asian community and then some. He is a trustee of the Euro Charity Trust which funds education in Africa,

the Asian subcontinent and holds projects for widows and housing. In addition, Nawa is a trustee of the Birmingham Ethnic Education Advisory Service (BEEAS) which helps

gives the BME community access to education. Finally, he is a life patron of the Al-Shifa Eye Hospital in Pakistan which is dedicated to the prevention and cure of blindness.

Birmingham Charities Launch Festival Of Inclusive Sport The fifth annual festival is back this month celebrating inclusive sport and physical activity

S

pearheaded by Birmingham Disability Sports Forum, Sport Birmingham and Irwin Mitchell, this week-long festival encourages disabled people, along with their friends and families to become more active. Free taster activities are on offer, such as wheelchair sports, indoor fishing, table cricket, hula hooping and more. The most recent English Federation of Disability Sport Lifestyle Survey shows that 64 per cent of disabled people would prefer to take part in sport with both disabled and non-disabled people, currently only half (51 per cent) are doing so. April Barrett MBE, Chair of the Birmingham Disability Sports Forum, is championing inclusive sport. She said, ‘The Birmingham Disability Sports Forum is a committed group of individuals and organisations in the city that have been busy helping build a really fantastic programme

of activities for those with and without disabilities to try with their friends and family. As a disabled person myself, I have found that even a small amount of activity really helps my general wellbeing and it also offers a fantastic opportunity to socialise with others. I would encourage everyone to give it a try this year as you never know what amazing opportunities will come of the back of it!’ Taking place from 17th – 25th June 2017, the festival is set to feature over 70 free or low cost activities and is backed by Birmingham City Council and the English Federation of Disability Sport. Activities range from tennis, golf, trampolining, swimming to even indoor fishing, all delivered by a partnership of agencies who wish to improve and promote pathways for disabled individuals in sport. The festival is set to launch on Saturday 17th June 2017 at University of Birmingham Sport and Fitness Centre from 12.30 – 3.30pm.

Birmingham Kashmir Rally Cancelled JULY 2017

Council revoke permission for memorial rally for Kashmir ‘martyr’

I

n a shocking move, Birmingham City Council have removed permission for a Kashmir rally to take place in the city centre. The rally, which was meant to mark the death of the late Burhan Wani, a Kashmiri born ‘martyr’. Wani, aged 22, was killed last year in the highly conflict riddled area of Kahmir last year in 2016. Wani was the leader of Hizbul Mujahideen, a Kashmir separatist group that has is officially seen as a terrorist group by India and the EU. On the poster for Wani’s memorial rally, text read: “We will take back what is ours forcefully. We will not rest until Kashmir is free from Kuffars and hoist the flag of Islamic Ummah.” The Birmingham rally was originally scheduled for the 8th July in Victoria Square but after unease grew from the implications of the poster, coupled with an official objection from the Indian government, the council revoked its permission, causing a social

media backlash. A spokesman said: “We took a booking for a peaceful rally highlighting the human rights abuse in Kashmir. However, we are now aware of concerns raised about the promotional leaflet and,

having assessed the material, have not given permission for the use of Victoria Square.” The Deputy High Commissioner of India to the UK, Dinesh Patnaik, is alleged to have lodged a formal complaint to the

Foreign Office. He said: “Allowing anti-India elements to flourish here in the name of democracy will not do.” A Kashmire rally took place in Birmingham in 2016 which saw 60 protestors gather together outside the Birmingham Indian embassy.

The dedication of a Birmingham school health mentor who tirelessly supports youngsters at school and in the community has been recognised at the British Indian Awards. Jeevan Chagger, who works for social impact company Evolve in Birmingham, beat off contenders from all over the UK to be declared winner of the Indian Spirit in the Community Award at The British Indian Awards in Leicester last week [14 June]. He said: “It was an incredible experience to be amongst so many talented individuals from across the country. My family enjoyed it immensely too… seeing my hard work and persistence paying off a little. It is a great feeling to win such an award.

Jeevan, 20, also known as Mr C, works as a Lead Health Mentor for the social impact company at Nansen Primary School, Alum Rock, Birmingham, helping to improve the health and wellbeing of children through mentoring, physical activities and classroom support. He dedicated his award “to the many lives and young individuals I work with on a daily basis”, adding: “It’s because of them that I wake up every morning and go to work. They make it worthwhile.” The British Indian Awards acknowledge and honour the determination, entrepreneurial spirit and hard work of the British Indian community and businesses, and their

significant contribution to a diverse range of industries in Britain. John Bishop, Managing Director of Evolve, said: "Jeevan is an exceptional young man and welldeserving of this award. He has boundless energy in his support of a plethora of good causes and is an excellent role model for both the pupils he works with in school and his colleagues from Evolve. We're all very proud of him." Jeevan joined Evolve in 2015 as an apprentice Health Mentor and began working with vulnerable primary school children, supporting their academic attainment, physical and mental health, as well as their overall wellbeing. He quickly rose through the ranks to become Lead Health Mentor and was awarded Health Mentor of the Year in 2016 for his passion, diligence and hard work supporting young lives. Outside work, Jeevan is joint vice-chairman of Yardley Hockey Club, where he established a flourishing

youth academy, helps out with coaching and officiating at matches, and works hard to generate community interest in the game. Even before joining Evolve, Jeevan was an active member of his local community, coaching young cricket and hockey players, helping a campaign to reinstate a wrongly suspended teacher, as well as leading a community-wide campaign to oppose the academisation of a school. Jeevan has also received a Positive Role Model nomination at the 2017 National Diversity Awards, due to take place in Liverpool this September. Within 48 hours of being nominated, he received more than 20 endorsements and votes.

The end of Ramadan saw a huge turnout in Birmingham, with over 106,000 Muslims gathering in celebration. The huge event, which took place on June 25th at Small Heath Park, was the largest Eid event in Europe. It brought together men, women and children from the world over, even as far as Pakistan and America, to take part. The event kicked off with morning prayers at 9am before celebrators hit the fairgrounds, with featured everything from rides to stalls to authentic Asian cooking,

as well as miniature golf, laser clay pigeon shooting and more. The event was organised by the Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre who said “This celebration is one of the most important in the Islamic religious calendar and it’s an opportunity for us all to come together in peace and unity.” “We’re all overwhelmed that so many people from different faiths and from across the world have travelled to Birmingham for this year’s Celebrate Eid. “We’ve been working for months with

five local Mosques and our charity partner Human Appeal to organise the community for a memorable day of prayer, games and fun.” The event has grown by a huge amount since its inception. Back in 2012, Celebrate Eid saw only 12,000 in attendance. However with the huge crowds can concern. Patrolling the event were armed police officers and extra patrols. During the month of Ramadan, observers raised over £435,000 in a single night for the international humanitarian

aid charity Human Appeal. Othman Moqbel, CEO of Human Appeal, said: "It is a great honour once again for Human Appeal to be part of Celebrate Eid; the biggest gathering of Muslims in Europe. "As well as tragedy throughout the holy month of Ramadan, there has been unrivalled generosity. "British Muslims have given so much to help those in need here in the UK and around the globe. "This Eid we celebrate the generosity of the Muslim community."

Birmingham Museums Celebrates National Volunteers’ Week

As part of National Volunteers Week Birmingham Museums Trust is celebrating the dedication over 900 volunteers who help to keep the city’s heritage alive. At a summer picnic held at Blakesley Hall on 6th June, volunteers from across Birmingham Museums’ nine sites, including Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Aston Hall and Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, joined together to

celebrate National Volunteers’ Week, which recognises the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK. From April 2016 to March 2017 over 900 volunteers worked across Birmingham Museums Trust, dedicating nearly 27,000 hours to a range of roles including, milling flour at Sarehole Mill, recording archaeological finds, taking part in the Trust’s Young People’s Forum ‘Ignite’, and engaging visitors. The volunteers

include individuals and corporate groups. The winner of Birmingham Museums’ Volunteer of the Year was announced as Mike Byrne who has supported the Marketing Team for over 10 years. Volunteers play a vital role in developing new galleries, including the Faith in Birmingham gallery at BMAG which explores the many faiths of Birmingham’s community. 20 volunteers represented six different faiths and were

Sisters’ Cars Torched in Less than 24 Hours of Each Other Targeted attack on family over land dispute in Pakistan

Police are investigating two incidents of arson which targeted a pair of muslim women, both occurring in less than twenty four hours of each other. Amina Begum and her sister Khatam Begum believe they have been targeted due to a land dispute in Pakistan. The attack saw four vehicles torched and written off, two cars in Stechford and two in Acocks Green. A man approached Amina’s house and poured petrol over her two cars before lighting them on fire. The following night, a man, believed to be the same, did the same thing to the younger sister, Khatam. According to the sisters, the man is black, middle aged, and was wearing a sweater with a stripe across the front and a reddish-orange hat. Amina, a mother of seven children, said it is not the first incident of family violence stemming from the Pakistan feud. She said her husband was also attacked in a hit and run, which left him with broken kneecaps. Her son was also threatened by men holding firearms. Khatam, a mom of five, said, “We have now been

handed two sets of threats to life notices saying that our lives are in danger. “I have five children, including a 10 and 11-yearold who are disabled. I also have a six-week old baby and we were in the room above where the car is parked. We deserve some action from police.” Thankfully the attack on Amina’s house was caught on CCTV, which police are now investigating. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We are investigating reports of arson to two vehicles in Nailstone Crescent and two in Albert Road. CCTV has already been seized and viewed and further CCTV work is ongoing. “An assessment has been made of the risk posed to the victims of this offence and measures have been put in place in relation to this.” Amina said: “I think it’s just a matter of time before somebody is killed…I was actually downstairs, because of Ramadan, and I heard a massive bang. It was terrifying. All of the neighbours were out in the street and my husband’s car was gas converted, so it could have been much worse.”

awarded the ‘Working Together’ award at the West Midlands Volunteer Awards last September, for volunteering 100 hours to the project. Rebecca Fletcher, Volunteer Development Team Leader, Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “We have a fantastic group of volunteers and each and every one of them helps to ensure we can provide brilliant experiences for visitors and care for Birmingham’s Collection of important objects and buildings.”

Ugly Britain First Protest A

s expected, the scene of the Britain First protest march in Birmingham turned ugly as smoke bombs, clashes and abuse. The Britain First group marched from Grosevenor Casino to Centenary Square and were met by multiple anti-fascist groups. Multiple anti-fascist groups were waiting for their arrival, where tensions immediately flared. Opponent groups had the march corralled and arguments broke out amid the speeches. Then things turned ugly when a Britain First member lobbied a smoke bomb at the anti-fascists who

responded by pelting back water bombs. They hurled angry abuse at one anotherwith some chanting Nazi slogans- as the police frantically rushed to control the situation. In one video posted to social media, a young man can be seen being taken away by two police officers for verbal abuse. The groups were kept apart by police lines and vans and were successful in controlling any further outbreak. As the march pressed on towards the Mailbox, an Asian man was recorded goading and taunting the far-right group. He was promptly escorted away by police. A handful of fights broke out were quickly contained by police. Jayda Fransen, leader of Britain First, said: “I think it’s gone well. I would say that today really has exposed the police in Birmingham for what they’re all about which is they’re not interested in keeping public order for these marches. “They’re not interested in allowing registered

political parties like Britain First hold peaceful demonstrations. “What they’re interested in is appeasing the left who have been allowed to get within feet of our activists. We’ve got children with us today and thankfully everyone is unharmed.” Abdullah Rehman, who works with Tell Mama, an anti-Islamophobic organisation, told The Asian Today: “I felt it was a shame that Britain First were allowed into Birmingham because the resources that went into policing them must have been astronomical. That money could have been spent on other things like homelessness or other amazing projects that are running. It’s something we can try and work on in the future, to try and restrict groups like that coming in. We as volunteers worked with the local police and helped calm some of the protestors. It went off without any major incidents. A lot of potential confrontations were diffused.”

A peculiar red line appeared across the streets of Birmingham which has left hundreds upon hundreds of Brummies confused. The red rape stretches from Ladywood all the way to Centenary Square and is called Asingleline (a single line). It even passes through peoples’ homes, zips past gardens, streets, roads, public buildings, shops and more. The 2km line is part of an art project concocted by German artists Fabrice Mazliah and May Zarhy who have created similar projects around the world, including Belgium, South Africa and Nigeria. The line begins where three muslim men were murdered in one of Birmingham’s most deprived areas and ends at the Birmingham REP, where the BE Festival took place, and also Birmingham’s most

wealthy area. The directors of BE Festival, Miguel Oyarzun and Isla Aguilar, said: “The arts are a vital way of bringing communities together. A year after the UK voted to leave the EU, and with hate crime and inequality on the rise, it’s the perfect time for this artwork in Birmingham. “It’s an inspiring project to open up the conversation, joining together two places which are so close together geographically, but so far apart in terms of economics. The artists have encountered all kinds of people from very different backgrounds. It’s been a great way to start conversations about immigration, community cohesion and Brexit.”

Interview With British Pakistani Author Emma-Jane Smith-Barton 12

Winner of the coveted Penguin 'WriteNow' competition shares her story

Penguin’s WriteNow competition is right around the corner. The competition calls on writers from minority backgrounds to submit their manuscripts in the hopes of receiving editorial help and publication. Last year, 12 lucky writers were chosen for the programme, one of which was British Asian EmmaJane Smith-Barton. We sat down with Emma-Jane to find out more about her Asian background and its effect on her journey as a writer, as well as the purpose and benefits of the WriteNow programme. How did you first get into writing? I was eleven when I realised I wanted to be a writer. I remember the moment clearly – I’d finished a teenage fantasy book, reading though the night by torchlight, completely swept up in the story. I remember lying in bed, staring at the cover, and thinking I’d like to write a book like that, to tell a story that captivated the reader so strongly that, in that moment, it became more important than real life. Once I started writing, I couldn’t stop: I fell in love with it. I wrote when I was confused, angry, happy, sad. I wrote when we moved home, when I worried about exams, when I wondered if I was more British or Pakistani and if it was okay to feel that I was both. Writing became my companion; whatever

else was happening in my life, writing was always there. I found a home in literature and writing. It became a part of my identity. What is the purpose of Write Now? WriteNow’s goal is to increase diversity in literature. The scheme aims to ‘find, mentor and publish’ writers from communities currently underrepresented in the industry. It’s run by Penguin Random House, the world’s largest publisher, and offers a year-long mentorship to successful applicants: the chance to develop your writing and work on your book with an editor with the view of publication at the end. Last year, you were chosen as one of 12 writers for longterm mentoring from 2000 applicants. What about you or your writing do you think stood out? In terms of standing out, I think that ultimately, it really comes down to the writing, the voice, and the story. Although my manuscript wasn’t complete when I applied, I had a very strong sense of the story I wanted to tell – and any reader wants to be completely absorbed in the story. I’m passionate about the story and themes the book deals with, and hopefully that transfers to the page. Also, the feedback I’ve received from my editor mentor at Penguin Random House, Naomi Colthurst, since starting the mentorship is that my

teenage character’s voice is authentic and very relatable. My character, Neena, is a typical teenager! So I would say, have a clear sense of the story you want to write and stay true to it. Get to know your characters inside out. And then, polish up your manuscript to show off your best writing. There’s more advice on the WriteNow website on what stood out for Penguin Random House, so anyone thinking about applying should definitely take a look at their blog: https:// www.penguinrandomhouse. co.uk/work-with-us/authors/ getting-published/ Tell us about your writing project, Black Moon. What’s it about, and what kind of help have you received via the WriteNow programme in developing it? Black Moon (now called The Sun and Moon of Neena Gill) is about a British-Asian fifteen-year-old girl trying to come to terms with her brother’s death. As she tries to navigate her way through her grief, her first (secret) love, and cultural pressures from her parents, she begins to struggle with her mental health. It’s about identity and belonging, and also about the need to hold on tightly before we can properly let go. During the WriteNow insight day, Penguin Random House editor Ruth Knowles gave me some really clear pointers as to what she thought was working well

and what I should do more of, and also some things that needed a bit more finetuning. She also talked to me about other books out there that were similar to mine (but also different!), encouraging me to think about the market for the book, my potential reader. It was such an encouraging conversation and gave me confidence and direction to complete the manuscript. As a writer from a minority background, what has your experience with the publishing industry been like? It’s been interesting, challenging at times. I think that as a British-Pakistani writer, or any writer from a minority group, people expect you to write about certain topics, and even for certain genres. But the best writing comes from our passions, our obsessions, and often our fears – and it took me a while to move away from the industry’s expectations of me as a writer and figure out what I wanted to write about. Although, of course, I always knew deep down, it was more about having the confidence to actually do it. At the same time, I was looking around at what was being published. People like me weren’t publishing books; books like mine weren’t on bookshelves. That’s an extremely discouraging place to be. Writing can be isolating and it’s easy to doubt yourself while sitting alone

staring at a screen. That doubt can be debilitating – a mental block to creativity. I definitely struggled with that. But at the same time, I believed I had an important story to tell. Also, I didn’t see characters like myself in books growing up, and I was desperate for them. So the fact that these books didn’t exist was a catalyst in the end: I wrote though the doubt. WriteNow welcomes diverse writers to tell any story they want to. A British Pakistani writer doesn’t have to write about being British Pakistani, unless they want to. We all have our own unique view of the world, which automatically feeds into the writing. That is enough. Aside from the industry, have you faced any obstacles that stemmed from the British Pakistani community itself? There have been so many, mainly in terms of the expectations, said and unsaid, that the culture

brings. My parents are first generation immigrants and came into this country with very little. They wanted me and my sisters to be professionals – doctors, teachers, accountants, solicitors. There is a perceived security in those jobs. Certainty. So that was a pressure in itself – and I’m also a secondary school English teacher. And then, in terms of role models, I never knew anyone who had the same dream as me growing up, or even many people in the creative industries at all, and that made the dream of being a published writer feel unattainable at times. I kept going because I loved writing and needed to do it.

Changes to UK Immigration after Brexit Since the Brexit referendum Immigration has been an ongoing debate in the UK and it was also critical in the recent General Election with the main parties Labour and Conservative constructing very distinct arguments. If Brexit really means Brexit, then the UK is likely to move to a position where it treats all foreign nationals equally, rather than give priority or special status to people who are EU citizens. This will be a hard pill for EU nationals to swallow – but it will make life easier for growing businesses who want to be able to select who they

hire from overseas without being forced to prove that they have scoured the EU first. For businesses in the UK who currently employ EU citizens, these developments will create a period of shortterm instability but, with the likelihood of an agreement on EU-UK immigration rules by early 2018, businesses will be able to look ahead to the next two years and beyond with a greater understanding of what they need to do to retain the talent they have invested in – and secure the talent they need from either within or outside of the EU. For families, Theresa May

has recently highlighted many points insinuating that EU nationals will be deprived of their rights to move freely as they will be restrictions to visiting their families in the EU. Furthermore, families from the EU who have investments here will also have concerns as they previously had the option to move around at will and not worry about coming back to the UK. Therefore, it does appear changes are inevitable and preparations for the changes are vital to keep ahead and ready. New Diabetes Prevention Programme Rolled Out Across Birmingham 14

The head of NHS England, Simon Stevens, has announced 13 new areas, including Birmingham and Solihull, are now ready to offer a leading NHS prevention programme to patients identified at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Wave 2 of the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, supports people with diabetes and those on the cusp of it, to stay fit, well and prevent further deterioration. Local people from Birmingham and Solihull referred on to the programme will get tailored, personalised help to reduce their risk, including education on healthy eating and lifestyle choices, a bespoke exercise programme, and portion control. The programme, which is

run collaboratively by NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK, was officially launched last year. The ambition is for the programme to eventually cover the whole of the country. Early analysis is positive and suggests that just under half of those taking up the programme are men – a much higher proportion that traditional weight loss programmes, while roughly a quarter of people are from BAME communities. Simon Stevens said: “With more than 18,000 people in England having already started our diabetes prevention programme, the NHS is doing its bit but this is a battle we cannot win alone.” Nearly 2.5 million adults and children in England diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes will also

benefit from around £42 million of national funding which will be used to advance the care and treatment local diabetes patients receive this year. The majority of the funding will focus on: • increasing the uptake of structured education for those who have been newly diagnosed with diabetes and ensure they know how to stay healthy. • improving achievement of the targets for controlling blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. • reducing the number of amputations • reducing lengths of hospital stays At a local level, in Birmingham and Solihull the three clinical commissioning groups will receive £906,000 from the national pot of money.

Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS England’s National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity, said: “Tackling diabetes is one of the biggest healthcare challenges of our time, as the number of people with

Dudley Charity football tournament to help beat heart disease Football teams required to raise funds for heart research

Gurcharan and Herjinder Bhujhangy from Dudley, West Midlands are organising a 5 a side charity football tournament at Goals, Cakemore Road, Blackheath on Saturday 22 July to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Teams can enter to take part with a maximum of 7 players per team, adult teams cost £70 and children teams cost £30 and teams must be submitted to Goals, telephone 0121 561 3000 or Gurcharan Bhujhangy on 07762 521584 before 20 July. This is the fifth time Gurcharan and Herjinder have organised this event, although the second time they have raised money for the BHF. The previous event for the BHF in 2015 raised over £2000 for the charity. He has supported the BHF since he lost his beloved father, Dalbir Khanpur Bhujhangy, as a result of heart failure in November 2008. His father was part of

the legendary Bhujhangy Group, formed in Smethwick in 1967 and appeared in the Guinness World Book of Records for being the pioneers of bhangra music in the UK since 1967. , Gurcharan and Herjinder are also musicians and have organised musical fundraising events for charity and performed for over 30 years with their beloved father Dalbir Khanpur Bhujhangy Group UK. Around 660,000 people across the West Midlands are fighting a daily battle with heart and circulatory disease. Every month these devastating conditions claim the lives of around 1,180 people in the area. Donna Stokes, BHF Fundraising Manager for West Midlands and Black Country said: “Heart disease is heartless. Too many lives are lost in the West Midlands each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect

more families from this devastation. “By signing up to take part in this event you can help us fund the research that’s so desperately needed to bring us closer to beating heart disease. Together we can save more lives.

Type 2 diabetes continues to rise. The NHS, along with its partners, is going to great lengths to help keep those with diabetes healthy. It is crucial that we have an integrated approach to tackling not just the

prevention of Type 2 diabetes but also the successful management of all forms of diabetes and it is essential that we support the spread of evidence based interventions to help reduce the harm that diabetes can cause.”

Spanish Authorities Arrest Birmingham Man On Terror Suspicion A man from Birmingham has been arrested in connection to the Islamic State. The forty-four year was arrested from his home in Sparkbrook on suspicion of terror offences under a European Arrest Warrant.

Five others have also been arrested, including four in Majorca and one in Germany. They have all been accused of organising weekly meetings to recruit vulnerable young people and convince them to travel to conflict areas such as Syria to fight for IS.

It’s also a fantastic way to meet new people and make a real difference in your community!” For more information about the event, please contact Gurcharan Bhujhangy on: 07762 521584.

His arrest has been made as part of a Spanish investigation into IS support. They allege the Birmingham man had produced films of a violent nature which were then propagated on the internet. The investigation first started when Spanish police discovered videos documenting the indoctrination of a young Spanish muslim and his journey to Syria.

Campaign to Raise Awareness of the stages of grooming 16

JULY 2017

The regional see me, hear me campaign is encouraging young people and their parents to make themselves aware of how grooming can develop to help safeguard youngsters from this hidden crime. CSE can affect any child regardless of their gender, social or ethnic background. It is child abuse and can involve perpetrators grooming their victims in various ways, such as in person, via mobiles or online, to gain their trust before emotionally and sexually abusing them. Councillor Val Gibson, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Child sexual exploitation is a truly horrendous crime and because of the tactics offenders use, young people may not understand they are being groomed. “We want to raise awareness of how the grooming process develops

people identify the need to get help. During the initial ‘targeting’ phase the abuser will gain the young person’s trust, start befriending them, and give compliments and gifts. They’ll make the young person feel special, offering protection and testing out physical contact. Once they’ve established trust, the groomer then asserts themselves as the boyfriend or girlfriend, attempting to mirror a ‘loving relationship’. They will establish a sexual relationship, perhaps introduce the young person to drinks, drugs and pornography. The abuser may demonise the victim’s friends and family, isolating them. As this turns into the ‘abusive relationship,’ threatening behaviour, physical violence and sexual assaults increase. Information on the stages of grooming can be found at the campaign website.

West Midlands Community Register as Potential Lifesavers Minorities struggle to find matching blood stem cell donors On Sunday 2 July people from the West Midlands registered to go on standby to help save the life of someone living with a blood cancer. DKMS, a blood cancer charity, encouraged 128 people in the West Midlands to ‘swab to be a lifesaver’ and register as a potential blood stem cell donor at an Birmingham event. Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukaemia. It is the third most common cause of cancer death in the UK but less than half of the UK population are aware of blood cancer issues. A blood stem cell donation from a genetically similar person can often be the best hope of survival but only one in three people in need of a transplant will find a matching donor in their own family. Over 300,000 people in the UK have already registered as a donor. However, less than 5% of donors have a south Asian heritage and less than 3% of donors are black. People of minority ethnicities with a blood cancer face severe inequality in their search for a matching blood stem cell donor due to these figures. The charity’s latest advertising campaign encourages people to ‘swab to be a lifesaver’ and adverts have been running

across Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton from May. Hyesha Kaur Rahanu, 28, from Edgbaston, attended the event with her mother and sister after a rare condition that she lives with, kikuchis lymphadenitis, was misdiagnosed as high grade peripheral t-cell non-hodgkins lymphoma. She said: “When I was initially given the diagnosis of lymphoma it had a huge impact on my life, body and soul. It took me months to finally get the correct diagnosis and after this I wanted to support DKMS and the important work they do to recruit potential blood stem cell donors. As a family we were keen to support as

much as possible and were delighted we were able to help register people.” Lisa Nugent, Head of Donor Recruitment at DKMS said: "Thanks to all the Birmingham community for supporting our DKMS registration event and signing up as a potential blood stem cell donor. Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer - so everyone who has registered at the event may potentially help give someone living with blood cancer a second chance of life. “If you weren't able to visit us and you are aged between 17-55 years old and in general good health then please register online at www.dkms.org.uk"

With an unprecedented love of the city and its unique diverseness, he brings his 6-foot passion to The Asian Today.

Another Brexit Shock I’ve just got back from purchasing Euros at the Post Office in Bearwood. The exchange rate was an eye watering 1.04€ to the £1. To put this into some context, last time I purchased Euro’s, I got 1.40€ to £1. Now I’m no economist, but a 40% decrease in anything financial is bad. I only bought 40€, it’s for a day trip to France, my son is going on. He’s the only member of the family who’ll be visiting the Euro zone this year. At these exchange rates, it’s simply not affordable for the rest of us to go. So once again, the decision to leave the EU comes back to haunt me. And not for the first time this week. A couple of days ago, I purchased a replacement flashgun for my Japanese Nikon camera. As a full time photographer, this is an essential piece of kit. Having paid £330 two years ago, the new post Brexit price is £459. Whenever the fuel pump meter goes above £45 for my VW Golf, I curse the Brexiters for what they have done. I curse those who voted to leave for what they have done and most of all, I curse David Cameron for what he has done. Inflation is flirting with 3%. The Commons vote to maintain the pay cap on public services at 1% and the value of sterling makes it the worst performing major currency in the world. The Brexit negotiations are not going well. The only thing strong and stable about our position is the delusion we’ll get anything resembling a good trade deal out of this. Birmingham is bidding for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. We hope to embrace free trade deals in these markets after leaving the EU in 2019. If exchange rates don’t improve, Commonwealth citizens, here for the games, will be enjoying the most affordable overseas visit in living history. I envy them.

A new Mammals on Roads app for iOS9 and above, and Android 7, has been created to enable sightings of Britain’s mammals to be recorded on the move, allowing wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) to identify changes in population numbers and help conservation. The app is free, easy to use, and boasts charming graphics of a whole host of mammals, from hedgehogs and hares, to badgers and bats. There are also informative audio descriptions, providing useful background information and insights into the lives of these creatures. David Wembridge, Surveys Officer at PTES explains: “Data gathered from Mammals on Roads is vital to conservation work. Man Punches Muslim British Sikh Couple Woman in Face in Refused Adoption ‘Horrific’ Attack Due to Race

Another hate crime has rocked a small Birmingham community after a Muslim woman was subjected to a “horrific” attack. The victim was sitting in a car at a traffic light with her two children in Lozells, when a man approached the car. He was racially abusive, threw water over her via the open window and then punched her in the face. The attack, which occurred at 2.30pm, is being treated as a hate crime. Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witness to come forward. A spokewoman said:

“The incident, which has been recorded as a hate crime, took place at 2.30pm Sunday 11 June in Heathfield Road, Lozells. “The 31-year-old year old woman had stopped at traffic lights, and had her windows open, when she was approached by a man who threw water at her. “The man then racially abused her, before punching her in the face. “The man, described as being black and wearing a hoodie, then walked off. It happened in front of her two young children. She is a Muslim. It was an Islamophobic attack. The perpetrator needs to be brought to justice. This is hopefully an isolated incident and the actions of this one individual should not be reflective of any community. People need to be vigilant and report all kinds of hate crime.”

A British Couple have been refused adoption services because they are Indian. Sandeep and Reena Mander are a Sikh husband and wife pair who live in Berkshire. They are desperate for a child and have tried IVF sixteen times over the last seven years- all of which were unsuccessful. Naturally, their next option was to adopt. The Manders, both business professionals, went the the adoption agency Adopt Berkshire but were told not to bother applying as white parents across Britain and Europe would be preferred over them. The Manders insisted they would be just as happy with a child from any ethnic background, but were rejected by the agency. This was the cry from the guest speaker Roy Richardson, the legendary businessman who is best known for the building of the Merry Hill shopping complex at the second Nachural Summer Business Ball and Awards at the Wolverhampton Racecourse on Friday the 30th June which attracted over 500 guests. Richardsons has been developing real estate for six decades. The company was founded more than 60 years ago by the Black Country’s most famous twins – Roy, aged 87, and the late Don Richardson, and is now run by sons Lee, Carl and Martyn Richardson. Roy Richardson wealth is estimated at £500 million. The company is growing internationally and has developments across many European countries including Hungary, Austria and The Netherlands. Despite expansion across the world, the Richardsons will be best remembered for one of their earliest and biggest regeneration developments on their own doorstep – the transformation of the 300 acre former Round Oak Steelworks into the Merry Hill Shopping Centre. This development is one of the biggest retail centres in Europe. Roy outlined the characteristics of what makes an entrepreneur tick which included a hard work ethic, exploring all

He described how difficult it was to raise money for investment when interest rates were 15% but argued that the Black Country was a great region to invest and live. He described the process of calculating risk and argued that society cannot exist without the effort and entrepreneurial talent that the business community supplies. Mr Ninder Johal who is CEO of the organisers of the Awards, and who was until recently the President of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and sits as a Black Country LEP Board member spoke about the fall out of the general election vote. Whilst he asserted that it was going to be very uncertain in the short term but if the UK continued to innovate and add value to their products and build on the strengths of its economy and its role in world affairs, the future was still very bright. He spoke about the need to assert leadership and more critically to involve the voice of business during the Brexit negotiations. He also spoke about the positive future for the local region and the potential of the West Midlands Combined Authority where he sits as a member of the shadow board. The inaugural Nachural Business awards celebrated a number of awards. The main winners on the night were

Hindus seek Diwali New Aqua Park for holiday in all Wales Adventuring Brummies schools Hindus are urging all state and independent/ private schools in Wales (United Kingdom) to close on Diwali, most popular of their festival, which falls on October 19 this year. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that it would be a step in the positive direction, as it was important to meet the religious and spiritual needs of Hindu pupils. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that Wales schools should make efforts to accommodate the religious requirements of Hindu students and show respect to their faith by not conducting regular business and scheduling classes on Diwali. Zed said: “If schools had declared other religious holidays, why not Diwali? Holidays of all major religions should be honored and no one should be

penalized for practicing their religion,” he added. Zed also suggested that all Wales schools, state as well as independent/ private, to seriously look into declaring Diwali as an official holiday, thus recognizing the intersection of spirituality and education. Zed noted that awareness about other religions thus created by such holidays like Diwali would make Wales students well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened citizens of tomorrow. He has urged Welsh First

Minister Carwyn Jones and Cabinet Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams to work towards adding Diwali as an official holiday in all the state schools of Wales, and persuading the independent/ private schools to follow. Diwali, the festival of lights, is a traditional Hindu Holy day which aims at dispelling the darkness and lighting up the lives and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion in the world, with about 1.1 billion observers.

There are multiple picnic and barbeque areas on the grounds which are perfect for family and friends too. Bid to Bring Channel 4 to the West Midlands Move could bring an estimated £5bn to local economy

Surjit Takhar’s body was first found next to a motorway in the Midlands seven years after his disappearance. Now, his family have made a televised public appeal for information on how he was murdered, by whom, and why. Takhar’s body was found on the eastbound junction of the M54 near Birmingham in 2015 after surveyors found a skull near the motorway barriers. A tooth was used to identify him and he was found to have been murdered, with serious injuries to his face, rib and wrist. An investigation was launched and it was found that Takhar’s body had been there since at least 2008, a year after he left his family’s home. Takhar had been married for fourteen years and had three children with his wife, Lavina. Takhar then fell prey to alcoholism and left his family in 2007. He moved to Oldbury, spent a year self-rehabilitating then went missing. Lavina said "Because of his drink, he'd go off for a week then come back. It was a pattern I was used to. "When I found out he was gone or two weeks, I knew something was wrong." He was reported missing in October 2008, by which time, he may have already been dead. Takhar has two twin daughters, now 22. They said, "We have mixed emotions, just because he'd been there for so long, we're still in shock." Police are seeking help from the local and Sikh community.

An official campaign has been launched to bring Channel 4 to the West Midlands in order to boost the local economy and save money. Mayor Andy Street is backing the campaign which would see the popular alternative news channel move from its London home to the Midlands. West Midlands’ leaders launched an official bid to bring them to the region, which they say will bring an estimated £5bn to the local economy, and have submitted proposals to the Government. In the proposals, they

make the case that the West Midlands is the ideal location for Channel 4. Currently, Channel 4 employs some 800 people. Metro Mayor Andy Street said: "If we are successful in persuading Channel 4 to relocate to the West Midlands, the impact on our region would be genuinely transformative. "Not only would our creative and digital sectors receive a massive boost, but there would also be huge regeneration and investment benefits. "The West Midlands offers the ideal opportunity for a relocated Channel 4. Our pitch is that Channel 4 could thrive here in the West Midlands and we stand ready to work in partnership with them to make a success of any move." Councillor Clancy, Birmingham’s Labour council leader, said “The arrival of Channel 4 would follow a number of other major organisations that are committed to locating or expanding in the West Midlands. “The broadcaster would also be joining a long list of

new and growing businesses, with the region producing over 22,000 new companies last year – double the UK growth rate.” It is predicted that if Channel 4 does move, they will bring £2.3 billion between 2021 and 2030 and a further £2.7 billion as a result of their boost to local creative businesses. It would mirror the prosperity brought to Salford and Manchester by

the BBC’s move. As of yet, there is no definite location for as to where Channel 4 would go, but suggestions include Birmingham Curzon station or HS2 Birmingham Interchange station in Solihull. Other cities are also itching to get their hands on Channel 4. Similarly, Channel 4 bosses are not happy with being made to leave Westminster either.

otterheads can rejoice after news broke that a Harry Potter escape game will be coming to Escape Live, Birmingham. Escape Live sees players locked inside a themed room, having to solve puzzles and find clues in order to escape. Some of the most popular ones include the Zombie escape and Lab facility escape. There are three branches of Escape Live, one in Birmingham, Coventry and Essex.

Now a new one will be opening in Stratford-upon-Avon than boasts a magical Harry Potter themed escape room. Organisers say it is “highly likely” the Potter room will come to the Birmingham branch too. The Stratford-upon-Avon branch will also have a Shakespeare themed room to pay homage to the world renowned playwright and poet. Escape Live is run by Free Radio DJ John Dalziel and his business partner

Jas Sodhi. Jas said, “We have been working with Hazel Stenner, an expert on Shakespeare, for six months. The clues will be about his work and real things that happened to Shakespeare and people around him at that time. “It will be very fun and also educational for schools, we hope people will leave feeling more enlightened. “The other room is based on witchcraft and wizardry and will be

Danny Singh, the Event Director for the Mela who has been running it for the past seven years, said: "It is a South Asian themed festival to which everybody is invited. "We have been working to get people from other communities to come and sample the atmosphere.

There is a lot going on with great entertainment offering families to enjoy quality time together. We have not had any trouble while I have been director. "It is a great opportunity for people to come together to strengthen community cohesion. This has become increasingly apparent year after year and tells the lie of those who claim a wedge is being driven between different communities in this country." The event was attended by families and friends from different communities, whether Asian, white or black The security supervisor Paul Hockey said, “With all the atrocities that are going on in the world at the moment it is wonderful to see people from different backgrounds coming to the same event and getting on so well. It is a fantastic sight that restores your faith in human nature."

Police released the CCTV footage in the hopes that it would help track down the attacker. tudents at University of Wolverhampton were made to move out of two tower blocks after it emerged they were made of a similar type of cladding as the Grenfell Tower which burnt down, killing 80 people. The two blocks at Liberty Heights were partially clad in an aluminium composite material that is potentially flammable. Students were moved to a third tower which was believed to be safe and had no such cladding. Liberty Living, who own the blocks, stated they moved the students as a precaution and announced that remedial work would start on the buildings as soon as possible. A spokesman for the Wolverhampton Council said: “Due to the summer break this affects a small number of students. “The affected students have been relocated to alternative student accommodation in

the city while further investigations of the two blocks take place.” Meanwhile, MP Emma Reynolds was more critical in her opinion, saying, “I am very concerned that student accommodation may have been clad in flammable substances.” She added that a fifth of the two blocks were covered in the ACM cladding. “This is unacceptable. It should never have been allowed to happen and I am calling for a full investigation as to how it came about. There are certainly questions to answer, such as why this cladding was chosen and why its defects were not identified when the developers applied for planning permission. “I want to know what kind of ACM panel has been used and how dangerous it is. I will be writing to the council and to the owners of the building to raise my concerns.”

he community in Sheldon has been left disturbed after a Swastika was found graffitied onto an underpass. The Nazi insignia was found on A45 underpass where Coventry Road meets Hobs Moat Road. Police were quick to launch a hate crime probe after the mark was spotted by local resident, Imthiaz Rehman. Rehman, a charity worker, said “I’ve lived in this area for the last 10 years and have never, ever seen anything like this before. It was incredibly shocking. “I heard back from West Midlands Police straight away. They were terrific and

they said they had recorded it as a hate crime. ”It’s something awful that you don’t want to see in your community.” Kevin Hicks, Birmingham City Council’s assistant director, said, “The racist graffiti was removed by our Highways partners Amey. Graffiti is illegal and can significantly increase people’s fears of crime and violence. “We remove graffiti from subways and recycling sites around Birmingham as quickly as possible. If the graffiti is racist or offensive we aim to remove it within one working day. We also remove graffiti from homes for free.”

Hero Cops Stumble on Jewellery Quarter Raid Officer grabbed offender in vehicle and was dragged for 20 miles

A video has emerged of two off duty police officers tackling a live jewellery heist. Sergeants David Wilson and Iain McIvor were celebrating a recent promotion as a pub when they heard screaming coming from Stodman Street in the Jewellery Quarter. The two men saw a high powered car sitting outside a jewellery shop and revving its engines with the car doors open. They then caught sight of a man wearing a balaclava and carrying a pump action shotgun. Two other masked men exited the building, one holding a lump hammer. The man holding the shotgun then noticed the officers and pumped the barrell of the gun, warning “Get back or I’ll shoot.” Wilson and McIvor then announced themselves as police offices and were forced onto the street. McIvor then grabbed the thief in a bear hug and attempted to get the gun. The thief jumped into the car which began to speed away, pulling McIvor along for twenty meters. The two then ensured the staff in the jewellery shop were unharmed and called for police. 12 of the offenders were successfully found and arrested and included a number of Caucasian, black and Asian men as well as two white women. They have all appeared in Nottingham Crown Court and were sentenced to a range of sentences. Nathan Clark, 28, received 15 years for conspiracy to rob. Adil Yasin, 25, Imran Zamir, 24, Raju Miah, 25, and Tommy Walden, 28, were given ten years and eight months. Jon Hassall, Chair of Lincolnshire Police Federation said: “These two officers, who were off-duty, and had zero protective equipment made the heroic decision to act in the face of incredible danger. "This is an incredible example of bravery in the finest traditions of the British Police Service."

ob Bristow, the Chief executive of Execel, one of the UK’s biggest exam boards, has expressed "profound regret" after two of its A-level exams suffered leaks. The maths and economics exams were compromised after parts of the economics exam showed up on social media 20 minutes before students were to sit the exam, and a maths exam was sold online. Two men were arrested and released in connection to the leak. Bristow said it was "too late to replace papers to be sat that day and the following Monday". "We notified the exams

regulator Ofqual and took the evidence we had gathered to the police, who immediately began their investigations. "The police rapidly made arrests, but their detailed investigation takes time, and we had to make a decision about how to approach the exams that students still had to sit.” He added: "In any situation like this we have well-established contingency plans that adhere to one over-riding principle - fairness for all students. "We have to ensure that the exams are secure, and that we will be able to mark

papers to ensure fair results. "If we had had any reason to believe that there had been a widespread breach of the maths papers, we would have postponed this week's sittings without hesitation." Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said this incident is just the latest in a long string of education board failings. She commented “this summer's exams have been plagued with questions leaking, unanswerable questions and essential information missing from exam papers. Students, parents and teachers are likely to be distressed by these failings and lose confidence in the exam system."

Can Terms Such as ‘Genius’ and ‘Brilliant’ be Alienating Female Students? A

ccording to a Cambridge lecturer, terms such as ‘genius’ are alienating to female students. Dr Lucy Delap, the deputy director of history and policy at Cambridge University, said terms such as ‘genius,’ ‘brilliant’ and ‘flair’ carried assumptions of gender inequality and that female students are less likely to view themselves as such. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, she explain: "Students who're arriving at an Oxbridge college can still find it a bit of a male-dominated environment. "If you look at just something as simple as the art on the walls of a college, they're often by men and they depict men and often they're white men as well. "We think that a more plural environment would encourage a wider range of people being able to imagine themselves as powerful figures, as success stories, as excelling in academic terms." "We would very much like to see reading lists transformed so that they reflect more female historians, we would like to see more opportunities to study women's history," said Dr Delap.

"We want women to be able to imagine themselves as excelling and owning that space and create an environment that empowers women to succeed. Between 2015 and 2016, 31% of female students gained firsts in history at Cambridge compared to 39% of men.

"We're rewriting the first two years of our history degree to create a wider set of paper choices, to make assessment criteria clearer, to really root out the unhelpful and very vague talk of genius, of brilliance, of flair which carry assumptions of gender inequality and also of class and ethnicity inequalities.”

However others have criticised the stance. Prof Alan Smithers, from Buckingham University, said: "Imagine the outrage if we were adjusting things for the sake of men. It's patronising and wrong to think they have difficulty with terms such as genius."

Only Three-Fifths of Primary School Students Meeting Standard 39% failed to meet expected standard for reading, writing and maths

A

ccording to new figures from national curriculum tests, or SATs, 39% of primary school children have failed to meet the expected standard for reading, writing and maths. The worrying data shows that only 61% achieved the standard expected, not even three quarters. Only 71% of pupils met the expected standard reading, 75% met maths, 77% met the expected standard of grammar, spelling and punctuation, and 76% met writing. Nick Gibb, the schools standard minister, explained that the new curriculum, which was introduced in 2014, had "significantly higher expectations of pupils than the previous one". "Schools and pupils have responded extremely well. Today's results show sustained progress in reading, writing and maths and are a testament to the hard work of teachers and pupils across England. "Thanks to their commitment and our new knowledge-rich curriculum, thousands more children will arrive at secondary school having mastered the fundamentals of reading, writing and maths, giving them the best start in life." However General secretary Russell Hobby of the National Association of Head Teachers was less than forgiving. He said, "Sats data only gives parents part of the picture when judging a pupil's success or a school's effectiveness. League tables are the least helpful way of knowing if a school is the right place for your child. At the moment, parents and schools know that these results have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Schools do need to be held to account, but inspectors should look at more than just data. "That way, when parents are reading Ofsted reports they can have more confidence that the report properly reflects how good the school actually is."

Tory’s Scrap Free School Breakfasts Plan 36

Controversial plan to replace free lunch with breakfast scrapped

The Tory has scrapped plans to end universal free lunch for infant school children. The Conservative manifesto originally called for restricting free lunches for infants for economically disadvantaged homes, instead replacing them with free breakfasts for all primary school students. Nick Gibb, the School’s Minister, said, "We have listened very carefully to the views of the sector on the proposal to remove infant free school meals and we have decided that it is right to retain the existing provision." Free school lunches were first introduced back in 2014 by the Coalition party. After Theresa May announced plans to restrict them, there was sever backlash from the public with many accusing the free breakfast as being a mere cost saving mechanism as opposed to providing a real nutritional substitute. Similarly, many schools complained, having already spent a great deal on kitting out schools to provide free

lunches. Gibb added, "Universal infant free school meals ensure children receive a nutritious meal during the day," he said. "It saves hard-

working families hundreds of pounds a year and it boosts educational achievement, especially among children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds."

He also promised that no schools would have their budgets cut due to the new national funding formula which plans to make funding for schools more fair.

Suicide Note Homework Assignment “Absolutely Disgusting” Thomas Tallis School in Kidbrooke, London, has come under fire after teenage students were tasked to write a suicide note. The homework assignment was set by an English teacher as part of their Macbeth module. After reading the scene where Lady MacBeth commits suicide in Shakespeare’s acclaimed tragedy, sixty students were told to pen a suicide letter to their loved ones. The task caused an outbreak of disgust, anger and disappointment among parents, with many claiming their children had been emotionally affected. One mother was quoted as saying her daughter

was “very distressed” over the set assignment as she had lost three friends to suicide herself. Her daughter had confided in the school teacher that writing such a note made her uncomfortable. Her mother said, “My daughter had had personal experience with people her age committing suicide. On what universe was it ever, under any situation, a good idea to ask a group of teenagers to write suicide notes?” Her opinion was voiced by many as other parents declared the homework as “absolutely disgusting” and “insensitive.”

Teachers’ Concern Over Prevent Strategy Is the anti-extremist strategy stigmatising muslim pupils?

thousands of children in unregistered faith schools are at risk.

According to the chief inspector of the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), Amanda Spielman, thousands of children in unregistered faith schools are at risk. These faith schools, whether they be Islamic, Christian or Jewish, are avoiding proper scrutiny and sometimes feature poor conditions and facilities. Spielman said: "It is clear that weaknesses in current legislation allow some organisations to

teach school-aged children religious texts full-time… and avoid proper scrutiny. "Since January 2016 my inspectors have visited numerous establishments that they believe should be registered as schools. The fact that such places are able to operate and remain unregistered leaves pupils at risk." These inspectors uncovered 286 schools which appear unregistered, with 116 having been given warnings. Ofsted have proposed

prosecuting unregistered school. Currently, there are an estimated 6000 attending unregistered faith schools. Most recently in Birmingham, an Islamic faith school was closed down after

it was found to have "squalid conditions, including three single mattresses covered in filthy sheets in one room and no running water in the toilet areas.”

In particular, as part of the strategy, the law requires teachers to report pupils who exhibits signs of being vulnerable to or being drawn into extremism. A report into teacher’s attitudes uncovered concerns about the stigmatisation of Muslim pupils. The prevent strategy makes it the duty of schools, colleges, prisons and NHS trusts to have "due regard to the need to have to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.” The prevent programme has already been attacked after its failure to prevent the recent terrorist attacks on Westminster Bridge, Manchester and London bridge.

One of the researchers of the study, Dr Joel Busher, from Coventry University, said "Widespread and sometimes acute concerns about possible feelings of stigmatisation among Muslim students highlight an urgent need for systematic evaluation of how, if at all, the duty has impacted on student experiences." The report added, "Linking the duty to the promotion of 'fundamental British values' and, in particular, the pressure on schools and colleges to emphasise the 'Britishness' of these values - is often seen as more problematic, both hampering effective curriculum work around shared values and democratic citizenship.”

School Students Unrealistic University Expectation Students severely misjudged in-class teaching hours and mental health policies

According to a study from the Higher Education Policy Institute, young people need to be better prepared for university. It is often the case among college and sixth form students that they will have a far higher number of lecture, seminar or in-class hours than is true. This misconception often leaves new university students clueless as to what to do once their teaching hours are over. The study surveyed 2000 students, 60% of whom thought there would be more classroom hours than in school. In reality, university students are only in class for some ten hours a week. Depending on the course,

some students have higher teaching hours than others, but typically they are all far fewer than in school, high school and college. Instead, the onus is on the student to conduct private study and seek out tutors one on one for help if need be. Many students opt for the library only when assignments draw near, as opposed to using them and other studying facilities regularly. The study also found that students with mental health problems often failed to disclose them to their university, meaning they were missing out on much needed and critical help and support. The study found only one third of future students

planned to tell their university of their condition. Nick Hillman, HEPI's director, said "We know lots about what students think but very little about what those applying to higher education expect to happen when they get there. We set out to fix this gap because people who expect a different student experience to the one they get are less satisfied, learn less and say they are getting less good value for money. "Most applicants expect to

spend more time in lectures than they do in school lessons, but few university students actually do this. "Almost three-quarters of them expect their future university to contact their families if they face mental health issues, but this is a legal minefield so typically does not happen. "Schools, parents and universities - not to mention policymakers - all need to help school-leavers get real about their expectations."

4000 Head Teachers Put Pressure on Government

Heads to write letters to government to seek clarity on funding and extra £4bn promised

A mother has rejected an award for attendance as she does not believe children should be “rewarded for luck.” Rachel Wright, of Southend, Essex, said that 100% attendance awards "demonise the weak" and as such, rejected the award for one of her sons. The writer and nurse further explained: "You get rewarded for hard work. They don't give you a reward if you have brown hair.” One of Rachel’s children, Sam, has cerebral palsy. She told her other son, Jonah, who won the award that "You will not get a reward for not being sick." She wrote in her blog: "In this family you are not shamed for ill health, vulnerability or weakness. In this house you are not encouraged to spread germs when you are not well. In this house we look after ourselves and the weakest amongst us. I know the school is trying to prevent absences, but I don't think this is the way to do it.”

ead teacher have begun writing letters to MPs warning that their schools are “running on empty” and that more clarity on funding is needed from the government. Over 4000 head teachers from 17 counties are putting the pressure on the Tories to seek understanding the new education funding arrangement. Head teacher of Tanbridge House school in Horsham and one of the co-ordinators of the school funding campaign Worth Less?, Jules White, said: “Despite unfounded concerns that the Worth Less? funding campaign has a politically motivated dimension, head teachers across 17 counties are undaunted as they seek the best possible funding settlement. “The clock is again ticking,

as heads seem to be no closer to knowing what their budgets will be in the future and crucially whether funding will be in any way adequate. Schools are running on empty and need clarity and support now.” In the letters, head teachers write how staff are being made redundant, class sizes are getting bigger, subjects are being cut and welfare services less advantages pupils are shrinking. It adds the current situation is unsustainable and that schools are being forced to resort to asking parents for donations and financial contributions. The Tory manifesto promised an extra £4bn in education funding which is yet to materialise. White adds: “The last thing that our funding campaign wants is to see school costs rise

even higher and overall school budgets squeezed to strangulation point. Our campaign remains relentlessly focussed an adequate school, funding not our own pay packets.” A spokesperson for Department for Education

said they have, “consulted on a national funding formula for schools to make funding fairer. We received over 25,000 responses to the consultation, which we are analysing in detail and will respond to in due course.”

Struggling Actress Found Dead in Apartment, Police Treating as Suspicious In a tragic turn of events, a young up and coming Indian actress has been found dead in her flat. Police were alerted to aspiring actress Kritika Chaudharyʼs flat in Andheri West at 3.45pm after neighbours began complaining of a foul smell coming from her residence. Police had to break open the door and found her decomposing body in her room. Early reports allege the struggling actress was already three days dead when found. A police officer said, “The AC of the room was on so that smell could not come out soon. We

believe she was murdered three to four days back, today foul smell started emitting.” Rumours are abounding that Kritika, 30, may have committed suicide after moving to Mumbai and not having found a big acting break yet. She had achieved small roles in TV dramas and movies roles, including Rajjo and Parichay, but was still largely unknown. However due to the door being locked from the outside, the police are treating the death as suspicous. Rashmi Karandikar, Mumbai police spokesperson, said: “Around 3.45pm on Monday, the Amboli police received a call stating that a foul smell was coming from a room in Bhairvanath SRA society near the Regional Transport Office (RTO) office at Four Bungalows. The police opened the door and found the decomposed body of a lady aged 25-30 years. Prima facie an accidental death report has been taken in the matter and investigation is underway.” A post-mortem is underway.

Raabta bombed at the Box Office, bringing in a lacklustre $700,000 on its opening night. The supernatural Bollywood not-soblockbuster tells the story of a reincarnated warrior princess and her lover who find love again in the 21st century. After the success of M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, the industry and public had high hopes for Sushant Singh Rajput who unfortunately

failed to deliver. The movie was panned for its dismal performances from its two leads, who despite their ravishing, failed to deliver acting wise whilst the plot was canned for its predictability. Raja Sen of NDTV, stated, “Despite the refreshment promised by a relationship based on cockiness instead of conventional sap, Raabta is let down whenever the wellsculpted protagonists open their mouths.”

His 2016 hit Sultan was the second highest grossing movie of 2016,

just missing out on the top spot thanks to Amir Khan’s Dangal. Shah Rukh Khan jumped from 86th to 64th, a huge leap, with earnings of $38million. Akshay Kumar meanwhile jumped from 94th to 80th, having earned $35.5million following an incredible 2016 that saw multiple back to back smash hits; Rustom, Airlift and Houseful 3.

IN KUNDRA BRINGS YWOOD TO THE BBC At the 2017 British Soap Awards, singer Navin Kundra revealed that he was making a cameo appearance in the BBC soap, “Doctors”. What he didn’t reveal was that he was bringing Bollywood to the BBC with a new English version of his hit single “Mehbooba”. The special episode was broadcast on 9th June and is being praised as ‘spectacular’ by fans of BBC Doctors and Navin. The ‘Big Bollywood Proposal’ scene reached over 85,000 organic views on Facebook over the weekend – a record first for the soap. “The producers of the show contacted me a few months back about using some of my music in the episode for a special proposal and asked if I would also feature in it. I was absolutely delighted and agreed to be a part of it,” explained Navin. “They had a really strong vision and it’s very different for the popular soap, which is watched by over a million people every day, so good on them for wanting to attempt something new and fun to treat their viewers,” he said. Navin reworked his single “Mehbooba” for the episode and called in talented singer, Rekha Sawhney to duet with him. “It was exciting to go back to the song and give it a new life,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that the lyrics would fit the characters and story so

I spent some time watching and studying past episodes before re-writing parts of the song.” Bollywood Dreams Dance Academy and Artistic Director, Reena Tailor choreographed a special Bollywood dance routine which was performed by all the cast on set. Navin Kundra at The British Soap Awards 2017. Photo: Jeff Spicer/Getty Images Europe BBC Producer, Nasreen Ahmed said “The whole sequence was filmed in one day on location and was one of the most amazing things we have ever done here at BBC Doctors. Navin looked every bit the dashing Bollywood superhero in his white suit as he joined our amazing cast in a glittery colourful setting to perform the routine. It was a long day but his enthusiasm was contagious and never wavered. “Mehbooba” and Navin Kundra’s collaboration with us will live on long after the episode airs.” “Mehbooba” has previously gained Navin an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records and he also performed the song for the Royal Family where he famously taught Prince Charles to call Camilla his “Mehbooba”. Navin laughed, “I’ve been a part of many couple’s proposals, first dances and love stories through my music, but this is the first time I’ve done it on television! Anyone looking for marriage proposal ideas…this is the best you can get!”

Yalghaar, one of the biggest releases to ever come out of the Pakistani film industry, is based on the true story of a military operation in one of the most difficult terrains of the Swat valley against an extremist stronghold. Pakistani superstar Gohar Rasheed, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2012 New York Film Festival, shares his opinions on the Pakistani army, who the cast spent time with while filming. Rasheed says: “Whatever misconception there is about them, the army, I didn't see that. They are aggressive and strict like people say they are. They are really sweet. They invited us to dinner in their homes; they introduced their families to us. They are very nice people.” Rasheedʼs cast-mate, heartthrob Bilal Ashraf, also reveals the reason behind the

three yearlong production of the film. Ashraf says: “The actual reason behind the delay was the shoot. We lived with the soldiers during the shoot. We use their equipment, their choppers, their men, everything. If anything, God forbid, had to happen. The priority becomes the safety, obviously. The film used to be set on the back burner.” The casts are evidently very proud of the work they put into this film. Ashraf adds: “I have just returned from the colour grading session in London. Yalghaar is a hit, no doubt about that.”

However Karan has proved his own worth by launching Bollywood smash hit classics such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and the recent Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The same might not be able to

You might think that you are very fortunate but looking at the mediocrity you display, I might not think that. Hence, stop feeding it to me: ‘I am the fortunate one, so what?’ You are feeding this to me but I don’t think you believe that.”

unds raised for ‘floating hospital’ delivering aid to remote regions The American actor Michael C Hall, most known for his role as the psychopath killer analyst in the critically acclaimed show Dexter, has received glowing feedback for his support of Bangladesh. The actor has launched a limited edition T-shirt line in order to raise money for the Rongdhonu Friendship Hospital. Hall is an ambassador for Friendship, an NGO that helps those living in poverty in the remote parts of Bangladesh. These people die from easily prevented diseases and infections due to their inability to see a doctor. In addition, climate change has severely affected the water surrounded area, destroying homes, schools and more. As such, the Rongdhonu Friendship Hospital, which is actually a ship, travels to these far flung regions that were previously inaccessible in order to deliver care and aid. The t-shirt line launched by Hall reads “Power-Saw to the People” and will see all proceeds go towards the Rongdhonu Friendship Hospital. Hall previously starred in a documentary called Years of Living Dangerously, in which he visited the boat and its patients. He said, “I’m finally here in southern Bangladesh. There’s

so much water in this part of the country that boats are the main way to get around. As I make my way through southern Bangladesh, what I’m seeing is hard to take in – half submerged trees, houses built on stilts to keep them above the rising water.” “There’s something apocalyptic and otherworldly about it all. I came across a family whose home was perched on the edge of a riverbank which literally washed away in the night. Now, they are searching for another place to live. And a few days into my trip, I see one of the most surreal things I’ve ever seen. A floating hospital! “As I tour the boat, I’m struck by all unforeseen impacts climate change can have. But I’m also amazed by how resilient these people are. How hard they are trying to hang on to their lives here. It makes me wonder how much people can adapt.”

Landmark Ruling Sees Husband Muslim Girl Receive Less Assets Due to Suffers Acid Brief Marriage Attack on

A landmark divorce case could see asset splits in the UK fall under much needed scrutiny. Energy trader Julie Sharp, 44, built up a multi-million company whilst married to her partner. However when the marriage went bust a mere four years later, she fought tooth and nail to prevent him from getting more millions than he deserved. She successfully argued against a ruling that states that her husband, Robin Sharp, was entitled to half her fortune, stating "because this was a short marriage he should not get half of the matrimonial pot.” The Court of Appeal surprised everyone by ruling in her favour. Her husband, who was initially after

£2.725million of Sharpe’s fortune, ended up receiving £2million. Leading divorce lawyers have warned that this case has marked a "sea change" in how assets are split upon divorce. Alex Carruthers, a partner at Hughes Fowler Carruthers, commented: "There was previously no legal distinction between a 'short' and a 'long' marriage, and therefore no defined point after which wealth generated should be shared. "It was an area in which we had a pretty rigid rule. Now there is a caveat; in certain circumstances, we do not follow it. "It creates a further issue for divorcing couples to bicker about, and for lawyers to profit from." Julie and Robin had been

21st Birthday

married for four years, both had their own lucrative careers, and kept their finances separate the entire time. One of the judges presiding over the case, Lord Justice McFarlane, said: “The husband made no contribution to the source of the wife's bonuses and this is

not a case where, save in the final year, the husband is said to have contributed more to the home life or welfare of the family than the wife. "This case is, therefore, a 'non-business partnership, non-family asset case' where the bulk, indeed effectively all, of the property has been generated by the wife."

First Sikh MP To Wear Turban in the Commons Tan Dhesi has received praise for being the first Sikh MP to wear a turban in the House of Commons. The 38-year-old’s successful election in Slough was celebrated by the local Asian community and even as far as his family’s village in the Punjab, where villagers and locals danced in celebration. Dhesi, who speaks six languages, said: “British Sikhs and Sikhs worldwide have high expectations. If you say something improper, I don't want to do anything that would [make them] hang their head in shame. “While that's important... I'm a Labour MP, I'm there on a Labour manifesto, I'm there for Labour values and Labour ideals.” On winning his election seat, Slough's new MP said

“It's an honour and a privilege. The size of the majority shows that the people have chosen hope over fear and progress over stagnation. “On the doorstep we found that people don't want any more cuts, they need a Labour government. “Nationally nobody was predicting the results we've had in so far a month ago, we ran a good campaign and I will be seeking to serve the many not the few.” His rival, Mark Vivis, who lost by a total of 34,170 votes, said “It’s very disappointing but we worked hard to try and deliver for the people of Slough. It was always going to be a tough challenge and unfortunately not one we were able to rise to. “Congratulations to Tan and I wish him the best.”

n a horrific case, a young woman suffered ‘life changing’ injuries after suffering an acid attack on her 21st birthday. Resham Khan was driving through Beckton, east London when a man ran up to her window and threw acid at both Resham and her cousin, Jameel. The attacker then continued to chase the pair as the car sped off. However Resham quickly lost control and the car crashed into a nearby fence. Resham Khan recounted what happened next to ITV news: “The pain was excruciating. I was struggling to close the window. My cousin struggled to get us away. “I saw my clothes burn away in front of me. He put his foot down as we were coming onto a dual carriage way but the pain took over and we crashed. We stripped off in the middle of the road, running around screaming and begging for water. We did this for 45 minutes. No ambulance came.” Onlookers eventually came to their aid and got them to a hospital before police or an ambulance could arrive. They were transferred to the specialist burns unit. Resham required skin grafts on her face and her whole body. Jameel’s burns were so severe he was induced into a coma. After waking, he has stated: "I'm devastated. I keep wondering if my life will ever be the same. I don't know what's going to happen. I'm going to be scarred for life. I'm emotionally wrecked. I'm in continuous pain." He added it feels "like somebody's ironing me 24/7.” Both are said to have ‘life changing’ injuries. As for the attacker, he turned

himself in two weeks after the attack. John Tomlin, 24, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and is now in custody. Scotland Yard released a statement: "A man has been charged following an acid attack that occurred on

Wednesday, 21 June in Tollgate Road, E16. "John Tomlin, 24, of Colman Road, E16 was charged on Monday, 10 July with two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. "He has been remanded to appear in custody at Thames Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 11 July." Daniel Mann, a friend who set up the GoFundMe page for the pair, said Resham was going to attend a spa with her mother for his birthday and was due to start a new job. "This attack has caused them both to put their lives on hold,” said Mann, "Resham is usually a very confident young woman. She was preparing to open her own business over the summer, and had plans to model for Asian bridal, make up and hair artists. But now she feels as though her identity has been stolen from her, on her 21st birthday." The GoFundMe has since hit £30,000 in donations.

INTERNATIONAL Donald Trump Secretly Coming to UK?

THE ASIAN TODAY Halal Store Told to Sell Pork and Alcohol or Face Closure

Though it’s not so secret unfortunately…

A Halal store in Paris has been warned that if it does not start selling pork and alcohol, it will face closure. The Paris based store, the Good Price discount mini market, were delivered with an ultimatum from the local housing authority that stated if it did not start catering to the wider community then it would be in breach of the conditions on its lease, and hence be shut down. Nicole Goueta, the mayor of the Colombes, visited the store and told the owners to ‘diversify the range of products by adding alcohol and non-halal meats.’ The owner Soulemane Yalcin has hired a lawyer to tackle the issue and stated: “I look around me and I target what I see. The lease states ‘general food store and related activities’.” Yalcin took over the shop from its previous owners three years ago and turned it into a Halal friendly shop to cater to his customers.

S President Donald Trump has been planning to secretly enter the UK on a state visit with the press or media catching wind of it in the hopes that it will keep protests at bay. Trump is on a state visit to Poland and may stop off in Scotland to view his golf courses. If so, the gap in his schedule might mean he takes a quick hop down to the UK. The government are on alert for a potential visit, as are opponent campaign groups eager to protest if he steps foot inside the UK. Trump’s team will only confirm is arrival a mere 24 hours before his arrival in the hopes that it will be too short notice for protests to mobilise. Despite the Queen’s Speech making no mention of a state visit from Donald Trump, the government has stated a state visit will proceed. Trump had previously stated that he would not visit the UK if it would result in protests and demonstrations.

Co-founder of the Stop Trump Coalition, Owen Jones, said: 'Donald Trump is so cowardly he thinks he can sneak into the country to avoid protests. We have to prove him wrong. We're asking Britain to be on standby to take to the streets with just hours' notice if necessary. 'Let's not allow the arrival of a misogynist, a racist, a bigot, and a threat to peace be unchallenged. Let's take to the street in great number - and do ourselves proud by showing that Britain rejects his hatred.' The War on Want charity also added, 'Millions of British citizens have already sent a very clear message to the Government that the racism, bigotry and hatred of Donald Trump is not welcome here. 'Any attempt to sneak him into the country and offer Trump a veneer of respectability for his divisive and reactionary policies will be utterly rejected.'

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, advised Hindus to focus on inner search, stay pure, explore the vast wisdom of scriptures, make spirituality more attractive to youth and children, stay away from the greed, and always keep God in your life. THE ASIAN TODAY NEW BEGINNINGS The Unsaid Stuff www.mitamistry.co.uk By: Mita Mistry

Be willing to be a beginner every single morning. – Meister Eckhart @mitamistry Isn’t it exciting that each day, each New Year and every single moment has the potential to be the start of a new life, a fresh new beginning? This is genuinely profound. So why does the promise of beautiful opportunities or a second chance to rewrite parts of our story we have not loved leave us feeling uneasy? The birth of a “brand-new creation” is refreshingly uplifting so why are new beginnings often so difficult? It’s partly we don't know where to start. Imagine all that infinite space of possibilities, that blank canvas where you may start anywhere, this very space can feel intimidating. Just like starting to write a brand new article for example, it’s not that the words don't flow it’s whether they feel as deep and meaningful as needed to be. In this place of anticipation of what may be feelings of unease, self-doubt or anxiousness can emerge. Will this piece of writing be worth reading? Will it make sense to anyone? Just as there are zillions of ways to begin; there are a zillion ways our story could end, so we commit ourselves to a process that is not guaranteed. At the beginning of a New Year we are subconsciously aware that however good our intentions are to lose weight, be fitter, be more organized or edit a part of our story for a better version we ultimately do not have control over every aspect

of it. Not being in charge over all details is the root of unease. If you are feeling uneasy now that the New Year has arrived, let me assure you, you’re not alone. Here are a few things to remember during this transition; Every day and every moment is the start of your new beginning. This open-minded approach to each moment can help you feel happier and more energetic because there are no fixed rules on creating new goals. If you start but don't follow through that’s ok, you can start again and again and you will grow stronger until you have accomplished a purpose – perhaps not the one you originally set out with, but one that you will be happy to remember. You have everything within you already. You don't need to search further or wait for a green light, an omen or anything that is holding you back from being all that you are destined to be. New beginnings are exciting but change is not a quick fix. REAL long lasting change takes time because it has to happen inside you, but once it starts unfolding no matter where you go in life, what you own or don't own, the version of who you are becoming can never be taken from you. So owe it to yourself today to stop getting in the way of the beautiful blessing that you are. Take a deep breath, remember to have fun, and begin.

Cysters - Women's health and the media

See this image in the article. I'm sure you've seen it or something similar before. Especially if it's a topic about women's health. Unfortunately this isn't the reality. Everytime you look at anything gynaecological relater you don't see the real pictures of women. You see the below. Even when creating Cysters website I was inundated with these images which weren't an accurate portrayal of the suffering these women go through. Cysters want to know why! Let's be honest if you go through gynaecological and reproductive health issues your tummy DOES NOT look like this. This is part of the reason

why women's health issues are trivialised. These images are the images that the world see when it comes to women's health. Guess what.. the women in the pictures looks healthy.. her nails are nice.. she has no scars from any surgeries that our Cysters routinely go through. Cysters want to educate the world as to the harsh reality of women and what their bodies go through. Not every woman is able to get their nails done once they are in such debilitating pain. Not all of them have flat stomachs. So Cysters are looking for artists, photographers and real women to help us show everyone the realities of these issues.

Could this be you? Remember whatever gynaecological issue you are going through you are brave, bold and beautiful. Don't forget to show the world how

phenomenal you are. If you want to join our support and awareness group then get in touch and join the Cysterhood today. Love your Cyster, Neelam x

There were some side effects of the patch, such as redness and itchiness in the applied area, but this went away after a few days. The adhesive is effective and simple to use and can be stuck on by people themselves. It is also easy

to store and doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge, thus allowing pharmacies to stock it on their shelves. After use, the microneedles dissolve away and the patch can be put in the bin. The patch was developed by the very clever people at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, funded by the US National Institutes of Health. De-Fuzz that Sweater! Gently rub a pumice stone against your fuzzy sweater to remove unwanted fluff.

2.

Best Fits for the Best You ordered a size eight and it sits nicely on your chest but hangs about the waist. Those new jeans are a little wide on the hips despite hugging your legs. If you’re in a frazzle about ill-fitting clothes, then skip the tailors and instead opt for Lyrca! 2% Lyrcra jeans are perfect for holding their shape whilst 95% cotton and 5% Lryca t-shirts will do you proud!

3.

Quality Check Cashmere Gently stretch the body of your cashmere garment and if it snaps back, you know you’ve got a high quality piece.

4.

Jeans Fit Neck Method To check whether a pair of jeans will fit you, then place the waistline of the jeans around your neck. If they meet at the back of your neck, you know they’ll fit. Just make sure no one’s around to watch you as you check…

11.

Get Tall Fast! By wearing a simple V-neck sweater, t-shirt or top to create the illusion of a longer and slimmer torso. You can also wear heeled pumps the same colour as your legs for a longer leg.

12.

Pardon my Perfume If you’ve gone a bit overboard with your perfume, then dab a bit of unscented oil-based makeup remover on the areas you’ve spritzed to tone it down a notch.

13.

8.

Bread Crusts have their Uses If you’ve got a gorgeous pair of suede shoes with a nasty piece of dirt, then grab the crust off a slice of bread and allow it to sit for a few days. Then gently rub the hard crust against the dirt to remove it!

9.

Breaking in Stubborn Shoes Stick some thick socks on, then the shoes, and heat them up with a hair dry to make them fit more snug.

Repurpose those Old Single Socks! You can wear them at home where no one’s going to see you or you can use them a heating pad! Fill your spare sock with dry beans or rice and microwave it for 30 seconds then pop it on affected area to ease aches and pains. Get Silky Smooth Hair Opt for silk pillowcases which lead to less hair breakage, less ‘pillow face’ and smoother skin. Ensure to change the cases every 2 days to prevent spots and acne and to keep hair grease free for that little bit longer.

FASHION Fired After 25 Years, Lucinda Chambers Hits Back New Vogue Editor faces criticism after cutting old threads loose

Lucinda Chambers has hit out at Vogue and the fashion industry at large after being sacked by Vogue’s new boss. Edward Enniful OBE was picked to replace Alexandra Shulman from a host of hopefuls. Vogue’s first male editor promptly made a few changes to the Vogue staff, which included firing Lucinda Chambers who had worked there for 25 years as a fashion director. In addition, Emily Sheffield announced her departure, though there is speculation that she too was fired. Edward has plans to bring in his own team and curate a new senior staff team of people he can work well with and trusts before he starts his new job officially on August 1st. Although Vogue claimed Chambers stepped down, Lucinda has revealed she was in fact fired. She also revealed her true thought on the Vogue empire, revealed to a fashion blog called Vestoj: "Truth be told, I haven't read Vogue in years. The clothes are just irrelevant for most people - so ridiculously expensive. Most fashion magazines leave you totally anxietyridden. We are always trying to make people buy something they don't need. We don't need any more bags, shirts or shoes. So we cajole, bully or encourage people to continue buying." "At the end of the day, very few people have to have another pair of trousers, another skirt, another bomber jacket, so what you are doing as an industry is creating desire.” The blog at Vestoj was pulled, with founder Anja Aronowsky Cronberg stating: "Due to the sensitive nature of this article, we took the decision to temporarily remove it from the site. In terms of the reasons why it was removed, they are directly related to the industry pressures which Lucinda discusses in her interview. "As you know, fashion magazines are rarely independent because their existence depends

on relationships with powerful institutions and individuals. We created Vestoj to be an antidote to these pressures, but we are not always immune." Lucinda was scathing in her assessment of Vogue. She said, "The June cover with Alexa Chung in a stupid Michael Kors T-shirt is crap. He's a big advertiser so I knew why I had to do it. I knew it was cheesy when I was doing it, and I did it anyway."

onam Kapoor stunned onlookers as she closed the end of Ralph & Russo's 2017 fall/winter Haute Couture collection at Paris Fashion Week. The glowing up and coming Bollywood actress wore a dazzling white and gold embellished bridal gown with a ruffled back and daring ivory train.

The 32-year-old’s diamond-encrusted dressed was paired with silvery-white head jewellery and a choker. The dress was a sight to behold, gleaming and glistening as Sonam stormed the runway to cheers and fanfare. The actress recently stirred attention for her role in Neerja, for which she won the Special Mention National Award.

If it’s Bright, Go Light

Ditch the full coverage foundations and opt for a light coverage instead. Not only will this melt less dramatically, it will also allow your skin to breathe more and feel less heavy on your face during the heat. Similarly, swap your smokey eye, which has a tendency to run and turn all racoony, for a shimmery eyeshadow instead.

Stan Staining

Powder and liquidy formulas are the first to slip up under the heat. Stick to cheek and lip tints that cling to the skin better and last heaps longer. Not only that, but they’re easily applicable and allow for a more buildable application.

Time to Prime

If you’re not already, stick a primer into the start of your beauty routine. Not only will it create the perfect seamless base for your foundation, but it will keep everything in place and prevent it from sliding down your face.

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror halfway through a sunny day and seen more shine than a disco ball wearing HudaBeauty’s highlighter, then you could benefit from grabbing some blotting paper. It will absorb all the excess oil from your face without altering your makeup.

JULY 2017

There are many benefits to keeping active and working out throughout pregnancy. Studies have shown that women who keep active during pregnancy find it helps with their sleep. Something that often is difficult for pregnant women, in particular around the third trimester of pregnancy. Working out and keeping active will also help with better circulation and with energy levels. Studies show that pregnant women who work out consistency have an easier labour. If you are unsure of exercising whilst pregnant consult your doctor to confirm it’s safe for you to do so. During pregnancy it is important to start with uncomplicated exercises and stability challenges. The main focus on exercising during pregnancy is health and wellbeing. Focus on physical, emotional and mental health as delivery gets close and especially after baby arrives Certain exercises will need to be avoided such as; floor exercises that require you to lie on your back which do not have support for your head and upper back. e.g. sit – ups. The main focus before and after pregnancy is balance. During pregnancy, as the baby grows the expectant mum’s body alignment can change due to the extra weight. This can lead to a shift in muscular and bone structure. I recommend expectant mum’s to get guidance from a qualified pre/ post pregnancy exercise professional to show correct exercises and adjustments in form. Exercises and movements that open up and gently stretch the chest and work the back are recommended. It’s also important to focus on strengthening pelvic floor muscles (to prep for delivery) and opening up the hips. The hips tend to tighten during pregnancy. During pregnancy and the decrease in mobility concentrate on movements in all planes ; front, side , rotationally. We all know that correct nutrition is important for health – and this applies to pre and post pregnancy too. Avoid processed foods and stay away from foods high in sugar and salt. Opt for fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Try to eat whole foods that are unprocessed and unrefined. Whether we are pregnant or not, hydration is very important. Drink water and keep hydrated while pregnant and exercising. Aim to consume two or more litres per day. During the Post pregnancy stage adopt a daily exercise routine. Once you have got the doctors approval to exercise start gradually and with caution. Few months post pregnancy the body is still misaligned and needs to be eased back gradually into exercise. A new mum will be facing new challenges such as; sleep deprivation, pelvic floor trauma and an increase in the hormone relaxin and possible other minor changes. Relaxin can remain in the body for a year post pregnancy, leaving joints unstable and vulnerable to injury. The pelvic floor will also need to heal and be strengthened. Avoid over vigorous movements such as; jumping, running. Use smaller, controlled movements. Go for a brisk stroller walk or do a few sets of stretches, crunches or body weight exercises during baby’s nap time. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on working out. The key is to do something to move your body everyday. YOU CAN TWEET DAL YOUR QUESTIONS TWITTER: @DALDHALIWALPT FIND HER ON FACEBOOK: /DAL DHALIWAL INSTAGRAM: DALSHALIWALPT WWW.BODYPERFECTPT.COM

Innovative ‘healthy’ chapati flour lands in Leicester L

eicester’s Jalpur Millers have joined forces with Eurostar Commodities to launch a healthy eating revolution. Eurostar Commodities is to double production of its Spelt and Rye chapati flours to cope with massive demand in the UK. Stocks of Spelt and Rye sold out completely in Leicester in the opening weekend as customers flocked to Jalpur Millers to try the new product. Jaysukh Pau, MD of Jalpur Millers said; “We are delighted that we can offer our customers a product that is good for them, but we find that because of their more natural processing they have enhanced flavour properties and increased absorption benefits. So it is good for you but more importantly it tastes delicious.”

Rye and spelt give a rich hearty taste and retain a larger quantity of nutrients than other types of grains when milled. They’re a good source of fibre and minerals and are higher in protein than wheat flour. Because they are low GI the products are also good for diabetics.

Spelt is one of the oldest cultivated grains tracing is roots more than 6,000 years back to ancient Mesopotamia. Spelt has kept many of its original characteristics which provide an impressive nutritional profile, along with ease

of digestibility and antiinflammatory qualities. Rye is also a very good source of dietary fibre, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamin B1. Medium brown and Wholemeal varieties are available in 2kg and 5kg bags.

Ice from all three of the nation’s biggest coffee chains were found to contain bacteria from faecal matter in them. BBC’S Watchdog tested samples of their iced drinks and found differing but significant levels of bacteria in them. The bacteria, known as faecal coliforms, are found in faeces and originate from the intestines. Their presence in water is also indicative of other pathogens (disease causing organisms) being present. Seven out of ten ice samples from Costa were found to have faecal coliforms present. Three out of ten samples at both Caffe Nero and Starbucks were also found to be contaminated. Tony Lewis, from the Chartered Institute of

Environmental Health, said the findings were “concerning” and "these should not be present at any level - never mind the significant numbers found.” He added that the bacteria were "opportunistic pathogens - the source of human disease." Costa, Caffe Nero and Starbucks are believed to have taken action since the reveal of the findings. A spokesperson from Caffe Nero said "a thorough investigation" was now underway and that the chain was taking “appropriate action.” Costa has stated that it has now updated its ice-handling guidelines and will be introducing new ice equipment storage. As for Starbucks, a representative said that are conducting an investigation into the validity of the claims.

baby born on a Jet Airways plane has been given a lifetime of free air travel from the company. An expectant woman from Kerala was travelling from Saudi Arabia to India when she went into labour on board the flight. The crew announced a medical emergency which caused the plane to be diverted to

Mumbai. The plane, a Boeing 737, was currently atop the Arabian Sea, carrying 162 passengers However whilst she was still mid-air, some 35000 feet up, she gave birth to the baby with the help of crew members and a nurse on board. After landing, both mother and baby were

rushed to hospital and are in a ‘stable condition.’ Jet Airways awarded the child a lifetime of free travel for being the first baby born on board their planes. In a statement, they said “Being the first baby to be born in-flight for the airline, Jet Airways is pleased to offer the newly-born a free lifetime pass for all his travel on Jet Airways.”

In this bizarre or innovative story, depending on your take, Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow (that is his legal name), got his chip implanted underneath the skin of his left hand by a professional piercer. The chip was cut from 10mm down to 6mm before being put in. ccording to the animal protection organisation Animals Australia, Bali tourists are unwittingly eating dog meat and thinking it is chicken. Bali, as one of the most developed Indonesian islands, is one of the most popular destinations for both honeymooners and backpackers. The animal organisation’s investigation, entitled “Bali's hidden meat trade - and its disturbing connection to Australian tourism” found that dozens of cats and dogs are being taken from the streets, brutally killed and then sold to tourists as chicken. An estimated 70,000 dogs a year are sold into the dog meat trade. Animals Australia state, “Dumped in bamboo crates or plastic rice sacks, terrified dogs await the nightly slaughter with legs tied and mouths taped shut. They may languish like this for hours or days without food or water. One by one they will be brutally slaughtered in full view of their companions. “And business is booming. Year on year, seven times more dogs are slaughtered in Bali than in China’s notorious Yulin Dog Eating

Festival.” And it’s not just poor street food vendors looking to make a quick buck off the dogs. Dog meat was found in seventy restaurants across Bali too. Dog meat is often sold with the term ‘satay’ which tourist assume means chicken. Dog meat is often advertised as RW, which tourists cannot understand. An undercover investigator working for Animals Australia revealed his shocking story: “I began the investigation by pinpointing and getting to know the key players in Bali's completely unregulated dogmeat industry. “Eventually, they invited me to join them as their gangs stole, hunted, poisoned and killed dogs. Consumers are in danger, not just of being lied to and eating meat they mistake for a different animal, but because of the poison used to kill the dogs. Dr Andrew Dawson of the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre, says the dog meat may cause nausea, muscle aches, shortness of breath and even nerve and organ damage.

It’s no lie that first impressions matter and whether it be of a person, a car, or a house, it can often cement our way of thinking about something. One of the best ways of marketing a new property these days is via Instagram, where you can upload photos, groups of photos, and even videos of your property. They can be geographically stamped so people know the location, and in the caption for the image you list prices, house descriptions, contact details and more. Are you buying property abroad? If so, there are some things which if left ignored, could leave you out of sorts and even out of pocket. This is not an exhaustive list, but gives you some reminders on costs and things to consider. 1. Living or Letting What is the purpose of your overseas property? If you’re not living in it 365 days of the year, then you could make some serious money by renting it out. Renting or letting an overseas property can be difficult, thankfully there are numerous agencies out there to help you. Timeshares are another option worth looking into. They involve buying the right to spend a certain amount of time in a property and is often less costly than buying a property. 2. Lawyer Up Ensure you get an

independent lawyer to help you with your property. He or she must know the local language of where the property is situated as well as the property law of that country, in particular how it relates to those buying from abroad. They should also be based in the same country as your new property. If you’re looking to buy in Europe, then instead of a lawyer, you must use a notary. Notaries are governmental representatives who oversee property dealings. 3. Handling Taxes You may need to pay income tax both in the country abroad and back home if you are renting the property out to people. On top of those, you need to pay council tax in the local area and may be required to pay capital gains tax upon selling the property.

4. Mortgages When picking out a mortgage, it is extremely important to consider as many offers as possible from different lenders. When choosing a mortgage, consider interest rates, the repayment period, set up fees, early repayment and cancellation fees. Be aware that inflation make cause changes to your repayment rates. 5. Additional Costs to consider Financial advisor Chartered surveyor Mortgage broker fee Admin fee for banks International bank transfer fees Power of attorney if needed Furniture, shipping and insurance Translation fees Utilities, bills and all taxes Refuse collection

TVR Announce First Model in Ten Years Coinciding with 70th Anniversary, new TVR boasts carbon fibre chassis

*Artist Impression

TVR are set to unveil their latest model at the Goodwill Revial this September. The new model is the first car to come out from TVR in a decade and will coincide with their 70th Anniversary. It is expected to weight 1200kg, featured 5.0-litre Cosworth-developed V8 and boasts an impressive power output of 480bhp, resulting in a 200mph top speed and a 0-60mph time in 4 seconds. The British car manufacturer has produced a limited amount of the model, with 500 ‘Launch edition’ cars priced at

£90,000. They’re already selling fast, with the car having been shown at a handful of private events already. The new TVR will come with the option of an iSteam carbon fibre chassis manufacturing technology typical of its designer’s, Gordon Murray’s, company. TVR chairman Les Edgar said: "Historically, carbon fibre has been reserved for motorsport and high-end supercars," said Les. "But now TVR will be offering customers a slice of that technology at a fraction of the price.

"The spotlight has been on us from the start, and with the help of Gordon Murray Design and its innovative processes, we have made sure that our new sports car can really shine and deliver beyond expectations. The carbon manufacturing process really is a game changer, and one I’m delighted to offer to all of our early adopter Launch Edition customers within the package cost." Gordon Murray said: “From early on it became apparent that there was no reason why we couldn’t develop a carbon fibre

chassis structure for the new TVR at a lower cost than manufacturing processes previously allowed. Our iStream Carbon technology is the world’s first affordable, yet high volume, carbon fibre chassis and body structure and sets new standards in the automotive industry for chassis light weighting, rigidity and safety. "I am delighted that TVR is able to offer a carbon fibre option and bring the lightweight TVR principle back to life in a very exciting contemporary way."

Young People Driven Away From Driving Mounting insurance prices and car costs pricing young people off road. According to InsuretheGap, young people are being priced out of the motoring market. Research found that those below the age of 25 are unable to afford driving lessons, much less cars and car insurance

themselves. Rising car prices, inflated insurance prices and ever growing debts means young people are finding it harder to find the money or justify driving. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) said that the average driving lesson in the UK costs £24. Given the

average amount of lessons taken is 19, that’s £456 on lessons alone. Throw on a theory test costing £23, a practical test costing £75 and learning by itself costs a whopping £554 alone. InsuretheGap’s added that most youngsters are forced to rely on the help of parents or bank loans

in order to buy a car. Though this does not mean they will be able to run the car, have it regularly serviced and maintained. Car insurance is perhaps the biggest deterrent however, with the average policy costing an astounding £3900 for a 17-20 year old. Ben Wooltorton, director at InsuretheGap.com, said, “When one in six jobs specifies that the applicant must have a driving licence, this generation are potentially being held back by their lack of wheels. Indian Villagers Arrested for Celebrating Pakistan Champions Win

fter the surprise success of Pakistan during the Champions Trophy, Pakistanis the world over have been celebrating with fervour in the thousands. However it has now emerged that fifteen villagers who were also celebrating the win have been arrested by police for sedition. The villagers, from Burhanpur district's Mohad village, were arrested by Madhya Pradesh police for shouting pro-Pakistan slogans, and were accused of sedition, a crime which could lead to life imprisonment. So far, they villagers have appeared before court and been sent to jail for fourteen days. Sanjay Pathak, the Shahpur police station in-charge said "There was a complaint that they celebrated Pakistan's victory by bursting crackers and

raising pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans.” Around the world, Pakistani and Indian fans clashed over the controversial win which took the cricketing world by surprise. After a bitter defeat during the opening Champions game, which saw India batter Pakistan, Pakistan managed to stick to their guns and return for the final, beating India out by 180 runs. It’s not the first time that Pakistani fans and Indian fans have faced criminal charges over supporting their nations opposing team. In 2015, a Pakistani man was arrested for waving an Indian flag after Virat Kohli achieved a century to win a match. Sardar Singh Called in For Police Questioning Amid Hockey World League S

ardar Singh has been arrested in the middle of the Hockey World League by British Police. The former captain of the Indian hockey team was called in for questioning the day after beating arch-rivals Pakistan 7-1 in the semifinals. Last year, British-Indian hockey player Ashpal Bhogal accused Sardar of rape and assault, occurring in both India and the UK. Bhogal claimed the two had been in a relationship for four years, during which time the sporting star tortured her “mentally, physically and emotionally” and blackmailed her into getting an abortion. She also said the two had been engaged, but Sardar refused to marry her. Bhogal has stated she believes “in the British law

and that justice would be done here.” She alleges the pair were engaged for four years, during which she was invited to meet his family in India and fell pregnant with their first child. She told police: 'I spoke to him regarding this and he said: sorry, I don't want to have the child and you must abort it immediately, otherwise I won't speak to you and there will be no contact. ‘So under pressure, and with him also threatening and blackmailing me physically and emotionally, I aborted our child under the consultation of my parents. After this, Sardar abandoned me.' 'It has come to the point now that I need justice as a woman. If Sardar has any self-respect, he will call me or contact my lawyers.” Many in the sporting world expressed anger that the surprise police questioning occurred in the middle of the league. A member of the

hockey team’s management told the press, “The team is in London, he has been called to Leeds for questioning. We do not even know whether it is a new case or the same old one. If it was the old one, it makes no sense for the police to wait for more than 10 days since we came here. “Sardar is not here discreetly or fraudulently, he is playing in a major competition with the team and travelled with everyone. The cities are almost 200

miles away, which means a travel of at least 10-12 hours, and there is a crucial match against Holland on Tuesday.” They even add “this is sheer harassment and nothing else.” However Bhogal’s supporters have attested that given that some of the crimes occurred in the UK, the police are able to question Sardar now that he is on UK ground again, regardless of the hockey league.

“We’re more confident on the field. This one doesn’t fall off. No matter what I do, it won’t fall off.”

Maine high school is first in the country to offer sports hijabs for team mates An American high school has offered muslim students special sport hijabs to stop them feeling deterred from playing sports. Deering High School in Portland, Maine have provided team mates with lightweight scarves which are less bulky than traditional headscarves and stay in put easier, meaning muslim girls need no longer worry about their hijab slipping, sliding or even falling off whilst playing sports. Junior lacrosse player Fadumo Adan said, “We’re more confident on the field. This one doesn’t fall off. No matter what I do, it won’t fall off.” Deering is the first high school in America to offer such a garment. The idea first came about after the school’s athletic director read about the sporting hijab, however due to fears that buying a religious garment using taxpayer provided school money would result in backlash, the school instead solicited private donations and turned to fund raising. Together they were able to raise $800, enough to provide all muslim female team mates on the lacrosse,

soccer, volleyball, field hockey, softball and track teams with the hijabs. One senior student, Israa Enan, who was born in Iraq and emigrated to America, said her parents has discouraged her from joining the tennis team due to uniform and hijab concerns. She said “I wished I was one of these girls who wear the hijabs and play with it, but it’s OK. I’m too late now. [I’m] happy for the other girls who have the opportunity now to wear the hijab and be more comfortable doing the things they like to do.

Former School Teach Beats Pacquiao for Title Jeff Horn denounces disbelievers after beating boxing world champion

J

eff Horn has hit out at critics saying his win against Manny Pacquiao was undeserved. Pacquiao, the eight time world champion, lost out to Horn who took home the WBO world welterweight title. The win came after a unanimous points

decision in Australia, Brisbane. Horn said, "There will always be a backlash where people say I got lucky, or whatever," he told reporters on Monday. "There will always be the naysayers saying I did not win the fight, but I felt like I won the fight. A lot of Queenslanders

think I won the fight and people around the world." The 29-year-old Australian was relatively unknown prior to his surprise success in the welterweight matches. The former school teacher won a $500,000 (or £295,000 in English money) and has even challenged

acclaimed US boxer Floyd Mayweather for his next bout. As for Pacquaio, his Australian coach said the referee appeared “sketchy” and that the judges seemed “crazy.” Other celebrities and big name sports stars, including Kobe Bryant and Lennox Lewis, have also

Aston Villa Signs John Terry

Aston Villa Signs John TerryTerry joins local club to avoid facing off against Chelsea Aston Villa have signed John Terry, the former Chelsea and England captain. The 36-year-old’s contract with Stamford Bridge expired on June 30th, leaving the famous defender free to sign on with Aston Villa. The contract is for one year and will see Terry play for the Championship club at “one of the finest stadiums in the country.” Terry made the decision to go with Aston Villa instead of continuing to play in the Premier League so as to avoid potentially facing off against his old club, Chelsea. He said: "The mental side of playing against Chelsea was too much to get over for me. I

was there for 22 years at the football club. I am very proud of that but this is a new chapter in my life and career. "My thoughts are 100% here and the ambition is to get us back to the Premier League. It's a huge club. Villa Park is one of the finest stadiums in the country and there's a good group of players here. "I can't wait to get started now and look to help the squad achieve something special this season. It's a club that deserves to be in the Premier League and I still want to continue playing. "I am hungry to still play with a team and manager that has the same ambition as me to get promoted." Terry won 78 caps for England back in his prime and as of May 2017, won his fifth Premier League title.

expressed scepticism over the result. Nevertheless, Pacquiao congratulated Horn on his win and said he respected the judges’ decision. Horn said Pacquiao was "an absolute warrior, a legend of the sport” and said he might consider a rematch.

Andy On Ice Tennis Star Reveals Two Ice Baths a Day Andy Murray has shared his latest tip for staying in tip top shape during Wimbledon, and that’s win an ice bath. The number one seed said ‘It's lucky I don't mind an ice bath because I've been having one before bed every night just to make sure I'm fit and ready for Wimbledon.’ The British sporting star revealed he spends 8-10 minutes in an ice bath twice a day. It comes as part of a new regimen of different exercises advised by his team. Murray caused concern after announcing he was having hip problems, a week before Wimbledon was set to begin. It was enough for the 30-year-old to pull out of the Hurlingham exhibition match. Murray has been doing 20 minutes of extra exercises a day for his hip problem as well as double dipping in the ice. Ice baths are used in sports therapy after a period of intense exercise. It is believed to be beneficial in reducing muscle damage, soreness, and speeding up

Who’s Top Picks for India’s Cricket Coach?

After Kumble Stepped Down, Seven Apply for Position T

he Indian cricket team’s coach Anil Kumble has resigned after an embarrassing defeat at the hands of arch rival Pakistan during the ICC Champion’s Trophy. In the weeks before his departure, rumours swirled of a rift between Kumble and Captain Virat Kohli. Kumble admitted their relationship had become ‘untennable’ and that he could no longer continue as India’s coach, despite the Cricket Advisory Committee’s recommendation he take an extension. Kumble’s contract would have expired in one year but he was given the go ahead to travel with the team for the West Indies limited overs series. There are a number of hopefuls seeking to take over Kumble’s position, including

Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh, Ravi Shastri and Phil Simmons. Simmons, an ex-West Indies coach, led the West Indies to victory during the World T20 in India in 2016. He seems a favourite to take over the role and lead India to victory too. Shashtri has been tipped as the most likely candidate to take over after Kimble, having helped India win the ODI in England and winning the World Cup in 2015. A year later, they thrashed Australia during the T201 series and beat South Africa during the Test, as well as making it to the semi-finals of the 2016 World T20. Having already worked wonders with the Indian team, Shashtri already has a good bond with the players as well as Kohli.
