Hichki starring Rani Mukerji sees the acclaimed actress play the character Naina Mathur who has a nervous of system disorder, Tourette syndrome that forces an individual to make involuntary repetitive movements or sounds. The inspiring movie focuses on turning disadvantages into opportunities and staring down at challenges that life throws at one and ultimately winning over them. It is also a subtle
reminder about discrimination that exists in our society and has become a part
of our daily lives. It highlights this through the story of Naina, who faces discrimination from our society that firmly believes she cannot be a teacher because of her disorder. A meaningful story demanded an intriguing title that would serve as a metaphor to challenges, weaknesses, prejudice and social stigma. Director Siddharth P Malhotra says, “It was quite a task to figure out the perfect title of the movie. It needed to be sensitive, thought provoking, intriguing as well as

have a direct connect to the theme of the film. It was Adi (Aditya Chopra) who nailed the title of the film. He took a few days to deliberate on the same and when he told Maneesh (Sharma) and me his suggestion, we were ecstatic. Nothing could have described the film better than Hichki. It’s uncomplicated, it’s a strong metaphor to discrimination and it’s an extremely colloquial and relatable word.” Hichki, a feel-good entertaining film, is set to touch the hearts of audiences when it releases on 23rd February 2018.

A celebration of his life was held at the Hawthorns Stadium where he started his football journey – and what a journey he had. His family entered the ground to Chris Love singing Bring Him Home from the musical Les Miserables. Fans paid tribute with chants of "Nice one Cyrille, nice one son", and "There's only one Cyrille Regis". Regis's widow, Julia Regis, told the crowd: "Cyrille treated everyone like they were the most important person he ever met." She received a standing ovation after paying tribute to her "lovely, caring amazing husband". continued on page 2

Ex-footballers Carlton Palmer, Les Ferdinand, Chris Hughton, Steve Bull, Dwight Yorke and John Barnes were among those to gather in the stands. Brighton boss Hughton, currently the only black manager in the Premier League, said: "Cyrille played in an era, the same era as me, where it was very difficult for black players. Regis was the third black player to play for England and appointed an MBE in 2008. Back in the late 1970s Regis, Cunningham and Batson were subject to racist abuse and were nicknamed by their then manager Ron Atkinson as "The Three Degrees". They challenged attitudes and perceptions and were a role model for black footballers and paved their ways for todays players. His daughter Michelle said: “A legend, a gentleman, the Three Degrees - the many different names you had. But I couldn’t be more proud to
call you my dad. “Your strength made me feel protected. How are we meant to live without you now, I don’t know.” Son Robert said: “He was a genuine family man. He was our walking, talking superhero.” Mr Batson paid tribute to his friend and told the crowd: “We played at a time when black players endured vile abuse but Cyrille never lost his cool, nor was he ever intimidated. It motivated him to play even better. “How could anyone think they could intimidate the big man? You couldn’t. “We are blessed to have known him. Nice one Cyrille, nice one son.” After signing for WBA in 1977, Regis went on to score 112 goals in 297 appearances before joining Coventry City in 1984 and helping them to their only FA Cup triumph three years later. He was working as a football agent until his death. A great Legend who will be missed, RIP Cyrille Regis MBE.
FAMILY, FAITH AND FOOTBALL F
ollowing the untimely death of West Bromwich Albion’s legendary striker, Cyrille Regis, the love and respect this great man enjoyed has been shared by many people locally, nationally and around the world. Family and friends said goodbye in a private funeral last week. This was followed by a service at the football ground where fans could pay their respect. It was a personal and heartfelt occasion celebrating the three things closest to Cyrille Regis’s heart; family, faith and football. There were few dry eyes on a day the winter sun shone on the club he called his own. Cyrille Regis was a beacon of light and a hero to many of us. Imagine how few local heroes, a working class kid growing up in West Brom could have in the 1970s and 80s? If you were lucky enough to not come from a broken home, you could count those heroes on one hand; parents, a teacher, a relative and footballer Cyrille Regis.
We were exposed to casual racism on television across all three channels. Political correctness was not yet a thing. Thankfully racism wasn’t rife in the streets and back alleys of West Bromwich where we played. Every hue of skin colour lived in a community where we learned together in the local school and played footie in the local park. No one was rich, we just didn’t know we were poor. And we had Cyrille Regis. West Bromwich Albion’s enigmatic and elegant young striker. He gave our town a voice. And with him, that voice roared across the entire country. He put us on the map. He gave us everything to be proud of. He was our brother, our hero, our icon. He was our friend. I bumped into him many times in recent years at events. I always shook his hand, I always called him Mr Regis. I photographed him many times, I once asked him to sign a program which he happily did. I never had the guts to ask him for a photograph of us together.
A Personal Tribute by Jas Sansi
Who was I to stand next to him? I don’t regret this, seeing him and exchanging pleasantries was more than enough. They say its never a good idea to meet your heroes, they may let you down in person. Cyrille Regis never once let me down. He became more of a hero each time I met him. I didn’t want to embarrass him by telling him that, he always came across as so humble, so normal, I imagined it would make him feel uncomfortable. I photographed Cyrille Regis’s grand daughter, Jayda Regis last month at the announcement of Birmingham winning the Commonwealth Games bid. His legacy will forever run through the blood of this region; in personal memories, in WBA history and in his family. I thank God for sending Cyrille Regis MBE to us and I pray for his family and friends at this most difficult time. Thank you Mr Regis, for everything.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Doctor Told to Leave UK FEBRUARY 2018

TOLD TO LEAVE THE UK:
“From a dying person to a new born child, I have served all in my career and learned a lot.”
Dr Syed Kazmi
A
Birmingham doctor who works at Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been told to leave the UK before the end of January, despite a petition signed by almost 30,000 people approving for him to stay. Dr Syed Kazmi has received wide support from work colleagues in the medical profession who say that a well respected and excellent NHS doctor is being kicked out in the midst of a
health service crisis. Kazmi, who is from Pakistan had his visa renewal rejected last month over an HMRC tax issue related to a failed business venture in 2011 which he has pointed out was settled in full and resulted in no criminal enforcement action. In a statement issued to the Post, Dr Kazmi, who lives with his family in Lozells, said: “I have loved working in the NHS and it was a
pleasure of my life to serve in the most tolerant and civilised society in the world. “From a dying person to a new born child, I have served all in my career and learned a lot.” He went on: “This whole case of immigration broke me to thousands of pieces every day since the decision which I have read more than 1,000 times. I wish to stay and continue to serve in acute medicine which is the health
speciality least recruited.” His colleague Dr David Nicholl said: “I’m desperately upset by this. 30,000 people have signed the petition, doctors have written letters in support of Syed yet this is still going ahead at a time when we are in the middle of a crisis in the health service. It’s bonkers.” Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood has raised the issue with Home Secretary Amber Rudd and said “I have written in support of Dr Kazmi to the Home Secretary but have not had a response yet. I will continue to offer my support him in his battle.” The Home Office has confirmed it has refused Dr Syed’s visa application, upheld the decision at an administrative review and issued the notice to Dr Kazmi on January 11.
Man Arrested in Pakistan in Connection to Digbeth Business Man Murder A
man in Pakistan has been arrested in connection of the murder of Businessman and fatherof-four Akhtar Javeed who was shot dead last February trying to protect his employees during a failed armed robbery in Digbeth. Tahir Zarif, who fled the country days after the killing was placed on police systems around the world as a wanted man. West Midlands Police believed Zarif had gone into hiding in Pakistan and detectives have confirmation that he has been arrested and being detained in a Pakistani prison. Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is fantastic news for the family of Mr Javeed. “For the last two years they have been living with the fact that the man suspected
of killing him is at large somewhere – but with his detention they are another step closure to securing justice. “We have been in regular contact with the Pakistani authorities and will continue to liaise with them over the deportation process.” She added: “Mr Javeed’s family have been very patient and always said they have faith in the justice system to bring Zarif back to the UK to stand trial. “It was hugely satisfying to break the news to them that our suspect has been detained.” Mr Javeed’s heartbroken wife Aisha, from West Ham, London, issued a plea last year for her husband’s killer to be caught. “I have been counting, every single day. “Since this has happened, I have not slept for one night.

of Mr Javeed and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. He was also sentenced to 20 years conspiracy to commit robbery and eight years for possession of firearms to run concurrently. Owner of Dessert Shop Heartbroken by Arson Attack Owner Mehtab Hussian of Sweet Treat, on Lord Street, Palfrey, has been left devastated after flames ripped through his shop. Witnesses described seeing a group of men set fire to the shop, while a petrol bomb was reportedly thrown through the window which started minutes after the shop closed at 10pm. A BMW parked outside the shop was also torched, while a 78-year-old woman next door had to be rescued by neighbours as the fire broke out. Mr Hussain, aged 23, has run Sweet Treat for three years and said he was heartbroken by the attack on the business, which he fears was targeted. He told how he returned to see his 'pride and joy' consumed by flames. Mr Hussain, said: "I closed up at 10pm and went home. I got a phone call saying the shop was on fire. I said, 'what are you on about the shop's on fire?' "I headed straight back. It was total fire. There were people standing outside and fire in the car and fire in the shop. "I was heartbroken. As well as the damage to his business, Mr Hussain said lives were also put at risk. "My priority was to get the elderly woman out. I didn't know she was out when I got there. The scary thing is it could have happened five minutes before I closed." Mohammed Ahmed, 22, whose house backs onto the shop, said: "I was working and had a phone call from my uncle saying the shop next door was on fire. "He's a friend of mine and since it's been open I have been in to show my love and support. "It's not fair, he has put his heart into it." Police said the suspects had been spotted on CCTV running away from the shop towards Queen Mary Street and have called for anyone with information to come forward. The young business owner said he considered giving up on the shop after the attack. He said: "My family are saying don't give up but what's the point in carrying on?"

Pride of Britain Moin Younis has hopes of new treatment P
ride of Britain star Moin Younis has finally been given hope that there maybe a treatment for his agonising skin condition. Moin, 18 years old was diagnosed with Epidermolysis Bullosa when he was just 2 months old and was told he would not live past one year. Moin spends five hours a day dressing his blistered skin, struggles to sleep with the pain. Doctors are looking into whether a ground-breaking skin graft treatment in Europe may help an end to his agony. Moin has said “Having this treatment would change my life completely, It’s such a big thing. I dreamed about getting treatment like this when I was smaller It is been said that the treatment will be long and painful, involving regular
skin grafts for between six to 12 months, either at the Epidermolysis Bullosa headquarters in Italy or the main treatment centre in Austria. Younis family have started raising funds for their trip while they wait to hear from the doctors. The treatment will be a trial and funded but they will need around £250,000 for their flights and accommodation for up to 12 months in Europe. “It will be a lengthy treatment but it will be worth it,” said Moin, who has two older brothers. “At least I know something is happening now. “Before I had nothing to hold onto. I’d just get up, do my skincare and live with it. “Now the ball’s rolling and I can hold onto this treatment and say there is something out there for me.
“Hope is the most important thing.” “I’m trying not to think about my treatment too much at the moment because it hasn’t happened and I don’t want to get excited about something that hasn’t happened.” The treatment was discovered after a boy called Hassan, who lives in Germany, was given a series of life-saving operations to provide him with a new genetically modified skin that covers 80 per cent of his body. The boy skin was described as being as fragile as butterfly’s wings. Moin’s mum Shafia said: “Hassan was dying because so much of his skin was ‘burned’ by the condition. “Now, nearly two years on, he’s playing football, running and walking. He seems to be leading a normal life. “We’re hoping this

This must be one of the largest Syria fund raising efforts in the country ” The orphanage projects was the latest in a series of Syria fund raising efforts by the Mosque since 2012, including money for emergency food for refugees, flour to make bread and winter packs of coats and blankets. Amer Ijaz, the mosque secretary, estimates the community has raised about £3 million in total, with 100 per cent of the money going to the front line through Human Appeal. They also raise money for local community causes. Mr Ijaz said that charity is a key aim of Islam and that the online fund raising campaign will continue. One future aim is to set up a factory to provide work for the refugees, to help them build new lives following the tragedy of war.

In 2010 She was the Conservative candidate for Birmingham Ladywood, losing to Labour candidate Shabana Mahmood. Ms Ghani became an MP in 2015 when she was elected to represent Wealden, in East Sussex. She said: “Today marks an important moment for me, as the first female Muslim Minister to stand at the despatch box in the House of Commons. “As many people know, this year is also a significant milestone in this country, as 2018 marks 100 years of votes for women. In November last year, the fraudsters sent a message with a link and the promise of a free £250 gift card for either Sainsbury’s , M&S, Tesco and Asda. Now it’s Waitrose. These fake messages are designed to steal shoppers’ personal information so if you do receive these messages delete it immediately. Lynne Daniels a resident from Solihull said: “I have had these for Tesco, Aldi and more and last week, friends from the dive club had the promise of big bucks from Waitrose to celebrate their 113th anniversary! “Who celebrates 113 years? “I have ignored them all because my son Simon said ‘no one gives you something for nothing’.” These fraudsters are not just using WhatsApp to target people but a new email to attempt to obtain usernames, passwords and any personal details The email scam is concerning Debenhams and will contain an exact copy of an email receipt from the retailer in order to get the recipient to click on links and give away personal details. Homeless Man Given Fresh Start B
irmingham Garage and car wash owner from Sparkbrook gives homeless man a fresh start. Shezad Zaman used to pass Kriss Wilkes every day after work and decided he wanted to help the homeless after finding Kriss begging on the street in Sparkbrook. Not only did he offer Kriss a two-week trial at DAC Car Wash but also gave him accommodation. Kriss has taking to his new role with such enthusiasm he has even danced in a promotional video waving improvised glow sticks which is posted on the company’s Facebook page. Shezad said: “I saw Kriss on the street right outside the garage when I used to finish work. “He would be collecting money by the traffic lights and I said to him, ‘you’re a local lad, you don’t need to be doing this, come and work for us instead’. “He came in for a two-week trial and worked hard and showed me he was capable of doing what we do. He now works part-time and I have found him a room in one of my son’s houses. “Kriss has had a lot of setbacks but I wanted to give him a chance to make something of his life. “He’s happy and enjoying working with us.”
FRESH START:
Kriss is now working parttime detailing cars, which involves cleaning, restoring and finishing vehicles. Kriss said: “I was a homeless man a few months ago, I was addicted to drugs but now I’m clean. I used to sleep rough in my car or in shop doorways, in town.” “When my dad died I came

back and my head was a bit gone. “I used to sit at some traffic lights on the Stratford Road in Birmingham and beg until one day when my gaffer, Shezad, came over and gave me a chance. He got me a room sorted and got me a job. “He got me fresh clothes, trainers, shoes and basically
I’m living alright and I’ve sorted myself out and I’m getting there.” The staff at the car wash, on Stoney Lane, carry out a charitable mission every Christmas, this involves giving food to homeless people in the city centre, but this year Shezad only needed to look over the forecourt.

What do you know about Valentines? Facts about Valentines
Valentine’s Day is a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship for another person by sending cards, flowers, chocolates, messages of love and gifts. Some people take their loved ones for a romantic dinner at a restaurant while others may choose this day to propose or get married.
Valentine’s Day is not a public holiday in many countries, but it is the busiest time of the year for restaurants, hotels, florists, shopping centres and card shops Some popular symbols of love are used to express feelings such as Hearts, Roses in Red and Pink, Chocolates, images and statues of cupids, and cupids’ bows and arrows symbolize the feeling of
romance and love on Valentine’s Day. Cupid is usually portrayed as a small winged figure with a bow and arrow. In mythology, he uses his arrow to strike the hearts of people. People who fall in love are sometimes said to be “struck by Cupid's arrow”. The day focuses on love, romance, appreciation and friendship.

I’m thrilled to be engaging with children from 5 brilliant schools in the Lozells neighbourhood - our secondary school Holte and the four primary schools of Lozells, Angelsey, St Francis and Heathfield who have created the Lozells Youth Council. This is the brainchild of a group of activists called Lozells First who have been supported by the Heart of England Community Foundation. They are leading a series of debates at the Birmingham Council House Chamber, designed by the young people, delivered by the young people and debated by

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was found 'beaten to death' at a bedsit in Mansel Road, Small Heath on Tuesday 30 January. Police say a man was found beaten and unconscious at a bedsit property in the road, which is off the busy Coventry Road and later died of injuries. Detective Chief Inspector Edward Foster, from West Midlands Police, said: “Clearly we are at an early stage of the enquiry, but we understand there was a fight inside the address that led to a man suffering fatal injuries. “We have identified some significant witnesses and are conducting quick-time enquiries, but we are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and heard a disturbance or perhaps someone running from the scene.” The murder scene is just yards from Small Heath Park and off the busy A45 Coventry Road. A police van is blocking the entrance to Mansel Road, close to the George and Dragon pub and the Alaturka restaurant. Police are calling for witnesses who may have heard a disturbance or seen anyone running from the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101, quoting log number 2151 30/1.

THE ASIAN TODAY EDUCATION Coventry University to tackle the UK’s digital skills gap Through leading role in new government backed Institute of Coding
C
oventry University is playing a major part in a new government backed national initiative to grow and develop digital skills for the current and future needs of industry. The newly established Institute of Coding - announced by Prime Minister Theresa May in a speech to the World Economic Forum 2018 in Davos - brings to-
gether a range of universities, industry, training providers and professional bodies to tackle the UK’s digital skills gap. Described by the Prime Minister as a key part of the government’s efforts to drive up digital skills through the Industrial Strategy, the Institute has been made possible with £20m from the Higher Education Funding Council
for England (HEFCE) and £20m match funding from universities and industry partners. As a key member of the consortium, Coventry University will lead on supporting professions undergoing digital transformation by retraining learners via new digital training programmes provided both online and face-to-face.
Coventry will be working with industry partners to develop digital skills in the following industry sectors: advanced manufacturing and logistics (with Unipart and AME); transport and automotive (with HORIBA MIRA); the creative economy (with the Emerald Group); and healthcare. The university will also be supporting a national

owed almost £100,000, Perry Beeches III, at Lee Bank, owed £245,000 and Perry Beeches V in Small Heath had to pay back £130,000. The TES said the three schools were among 14 across the UK in 2016/17 involved in recovery plans to pay back the money. In 2016, The Perry Beeches Trust which ran five secondary schools, collapsed when it was revealed it paid its chief executive Liam Nolan a second salary of £160,000 on top of his £120,000 headteacher’s salary. Last summer Mr Nolan was appointed as consultant to the Gorse Academy chain in Leeds but has since left. A Department for Education spokesperson said:“Following the transfer of all five Perry Beeches schools to new trusts the ESFA has been working with the new trusts, Ark and CORE, to ensure that the schools will repay any pupil number adjustment repayments owed, as any other school would in this situation.” Perry Beeches Academy Trust announced that all five schools will be taken on by two new sponsors from March 1, Core Education Trust and Ark.

network of Digital Skills Software Agencies to initiate, develop, and deliver industry-led student projects as well as providing policy and research support for the development of a “National Digital Skills Observatory.” In addition, Coventry’s partnership with social learning providers and Institute consortium member FutureLearn, which will see the delivery of 50 wholly online degrees over the next five years, will also inform the Institute’s teaching and learning activities. John Latham, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said: “The Institute of Coding is the kind of skills partnership between higher education and employers that will be key to the success of the government’s Industrial Strategy. “Coventry’s experience in this area includes the creation of one of the first degree courses in Ethical Hacking & Cyber Security as well as partnering with organisations like HORIBA MIRA and Unipart on ground-breaking robotics, automation and connected
vehicle projects. “Our role in the Institute will allow us to build on these partnerships to improve digital skills provision for the advanced manufacturing and automotive professions as well as the creative economy. We are also focused on the challenges of digital healthcare as part of a commitment to provide digital upskilling across a range of professions. “Our long-term partnership with FutureLearn will also make a major contribution to this project.” “So we’re well-placed to play a key role through a new programme of teaching, knowledge exchange and professional development, as well as research and policy support.” Dr Rachid Hourizi, Director of the Institute of Coding, said: “The strength of the Institute of Coding lies in the fact that it brings together educators, employers and outreach groups to co-develop digital skills education at undergraduate and masters level for learners in universities, at work and in previously under-supported groups across the country.”
Aston Uni to lead on digital skills for new Institute of Coding • Aston University to develop a new ‘digital workforce’ as part of the new Institute for Coding • Theresa May pledges £20 million to help plug the UK’s digital skills gap. Aston University is to play a key role in developing the next generation of digital specialists as a partner of the new Institute of Coding (IoC), unveiled by the Prime Minister. During her visit to Davos, Theresa May announced £20 million will be given to the IoC to tackle the country’s digital skills gap. Speaking at the World Economic Forum 2018, she outlined how the IoC will create new degree level courses to equip people
of all ages with the digital skills they need. The IoC will consist of a consortium formed of businesses including IBM, Cisco, BT and Microsoft, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), 25 universities, and professional bodies such as the British Computer Society and CREST. As part of the IoC, Aston University will deliver industry-accredited courses that include top quality computer science teaching alongside the business skills, interpersonal skills and realworld experience required for success in the digital economy.

DJ KHALED'S DEBUT UK APPEARANCE AT WIRELESS FESTIVAL - TURN TO PAGE 19 Hichki starring Rani Mukerji sees the acclaimed actress play the character of Naina Mathur who has a nervous system disorder, Tourette syndrome that forces an individual to make involuntary repetitive movements or sounds. The inspiring movie focuses on turning disadvantages into opportunities and staring down at challenges that life throws at one and ultimately winning over them. It is also a subtle reminder about discrimination that exists in our society and has become a part
of our daily lives.

It talks about various issues within the country (India). It’s got a lot of thrills, a lot of actions and by the end of it, it has a lovely message. It’s a complete watch. 2. You play the role of Major Jai Bakshi, what is your character like? He’s a young officer whose join the military intelligence, whose been working on the field. And when he stumbles upon on what all is happening within the country, within the armed forces and within certain industries, is when he changes his gear. The film was shot in various locations, what was your favourite location? Definitely the UK, in London. I have been to London so many times but never really shot there. We were there for about three weeks; we shot in various locations in London. We were lucky enough to have the best weather, great sunlight and superb locations. 4. The film cast some amazing names what was it like working with Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah? Great. The ensemble cast is extremely prolific, a lot of experience, hard-core actors all around. It’s always good to have a team around you, which you know

jawans (cadets) who shared the same birthday as me. We all cut cake and clicked pictures. Most of all it made it special for me because I could give them that one evening of fun and create memories.
5. What meaning does the film give to you? For me Aiyaary really means today’s oath to the armed forces, to what’s happening within the country (India) on various subjects, be it corruption, and be it politics or the system. It’s really real and relevant film.
7. And what is next for Sidharth Malhotra? Later in the year, I’m shooting, ironically for another army film, which is based on a character, Captain Vikram Bhatra who fought for India at the Kargil war. It’s a biopic; it’s something I haven’t ever done before, a real character, a really heroic story, so I’m really looking forward to getting into that.
6. Now about you – you recently had a birthday, how did you celebrate? Birthday was very interesting this year; I was at Jaisalmer at the BSF cantonment area where I celebrated my birthday with other

British model, Amena Khan from Leicester who was set to star in a new campaign for haircare brand L’Oreal wearing a hijab has stepped down after controversial tweets were discovered on her twitter account. Amena, who lives with her husband and children has issued an apology after a series of anti-Israel tweets were sent out in 2014. She has since deleted the tweets. Man Charged With Dangerous JAS SANSI The Thinking Man's Mouthpiece Driving in Hayes Photographer and LoveBrum trustee, Jas Sansi brings a dose of all things Birmingham. With an unprecedented love of the city and its unique diverseness, he brings his 6-foot passion to The Asian Today.
ENGAGE OR GO!
I spotted a headline the other day about a city centre gourmet burger company, Byron at risk of closing with the inevitable loss of jobs. January is a challenging time for businesses, Christmas and the boost it injects into retail is a distant memory. Rocking up in Brum, opening a upscale burger joint and offering ‘proper burgers’ on the back of the company’s success in London is wishful thinking at best. The key to success in Birmingham is engagement. Without engagement, customers do not know who you are. Customers want to know your values. Engage or Go is the mantra for success in Greater Birmingham and the West Midlands. The easiest way to engage is by networking. Reach out to organisations like the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce who can boast an invigorated team led by one of the city’s key business leaders, Paul Faulkner. Engage with local charities. LoveBrum are the charity for a better Birmingham. Casting a spotlight on local projects to bring tangible and lasting change to the city. Membership is twenty pounds a year. This gives you an opportunity to vote for the project you want to support each month and access to the ‘Members Mingle’ events. There are many opportunities to engage. Look out for The Signature Awards in February, Ticketing Professionals in March, Chamber Awards in April, BYPY in May, Midlands Food Drink & Hospitality Awards in June, ABCC, Curry King of Birmingham and Birmingham Awards in November. These are invaluable opportunities to plug yourself into the business circuit. If ‘Engage or Go’ sounds harsh, how about ‘Engage and Fly.’ Those who reach out to their communities, contribute to change, lobby the decision makers and create real value are the ones who rarely feature in the gloomy headlines of the new year. Humans are built to succeed. Engage with those around you and embrace that success.
Three teenagers in West London have died after being hit by a car that mounted on to the pavement on Friday 26 January as they were walking to a birthday party. Jaynesh Chudasama, 28, will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court and has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He was arrested at the scene of the crash. Another man, aged 34, was arrested after he voluntarily attended a police station in north London. All three boys were pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics, Detectives named the victims as 17-year-old Harry
Louis Rice, 16-year-old George Toby Wilkinson and 16-year-old Josh Mcgunniess. In a statement Detective Sergeant Michael Rapp, of the Met's serious collision investigation unit, said: "This is a fast-moving investigation and CCTV enquiries and forensic analysis of the car involved are under way." He said inquiries were ongoing "to establish the full circumstances of the collision and the number of occupants in the vehicle involved". Hillingdon Borough Commander Colin Wingrove said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with family and many friends of three young men who have died in such tragic circumstances.
"Tributes continue to be laid at the scene and officers will be in and around the area providing a presence and also make to themselves available to anyone who does have information and wants to speak with police. "There is understandably a lot of shock and grief in the
local community. These three young men had their whole lives ahead of them. "I would like to reiterate the appeal from the families that their privacy is respected at this difficult time so they can grieve in peace."
An aircraft engineer Aamair Patel, 25, smashed £22,000 Mercedes into a crowded Indian takeaway before racing off has avoided jail after he apologised for bringing shame on his Muslim family. Aamair had been drinking vodka and Fanta when he crashed into Naz curry house in Bolton, Greater Manchester, where there was seven to eight people in the takeaway and numerous people on the pavement fortunately no one was hurt. He then reversed his car and as he drove off he hit another vehicle from behind before ploughing head on
into a Vauxhall Astra. When he was breathalysed he was three times the drinkdrive limit Aamair admitted to drink driving and dangerous driving and sobbed as he was given a 12-month suspended sentence at Bolton Crown Court. He was also banned from the road for three years and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work. He will have to undertake an extended driving test when his driving ban is over and pay £500 cost. The damage to the car was £22,000 and it was effectively written off. His father is
determined that he will pay back every penny, as he was in a privileged position as the car was given to him by his parents, who worked long and hard for it and he will have to pay that back. Sentencing Judge Timothy Clayson told him: 'It is a miracle that nobody was hurt or worse. Your blood alcohol
level was almost three times the legal limit. 'But you have taken steps which I consider to be honest and not cynical to address your alcohol problem. You also have very good prospects and the support of a good family and that is a wonderful thing.'

Trump Imitates Modi’s Accent
President Donald Trump is known to have imitated an Indian accent when he repeats comments made to him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders are said to have a warm relationship, something that has been helped by the Indian leader being invited to the Oval Office on several occasions and the Trump administration’s recent criticism of India’ neighbour, Pakistan. In a new report it claims Mr Trump, who earlier this month triggered controversy when it was reported he used the phrase ’s***hole” countries when referring to Haiti and African nations, reportedly imitates the Indian leader’s accent could lead to tension between the two countries. It said Mr Trump imitated the accent of Mr Modi, who can speak and understand English but prefers to converse in his native Hindi and claimed that he said to him: “Never has a country given so much away for so little in return” - as the United States in Afghanistan. Mr Trump claimed the Indian leader’s comment was proof the rest of the world viewed the United States as being taken advantage of in Afghanistan. It is claimed that it’s not the first time Mr Trump had adopted a fake Indian accent. In the spring of 2016, during the election campaign, Mr Trump used a such a voice to mock a call centre representative in India. Mr Modi and Mr Trump may be set for a potentially awkward meeting this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Indian Amputee Mountaineer Wins Compensation
An Indian mountaineer has won a prolonged legal battle to get compensation from a railway company she was travelling with where she lost a leg resisting robbers in 2011. Arunima Sinha's lawyer said India's state-run railways initially refused to recognise Ms Sinha as a passenger and even blamed her for the accident. The legal victory came after a seven-year battle in the railway tribunal. Before her accident Arunima was a volleyball champion but chose mountaineering to "accomplish her dreams". Arunima became the world's first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest in 2013. The railway tribunal ordered that Ms Sinha must be paid 700,000 rupees ($11,000; £8,000) in compensation after her legal team was able to prove that she had been travelling on a valid ticket and had been pushed from a moving train by robbers.

Birmingham Uncorked! As plans for city’s first wine weekend are announced
I am absolutely delighted to reveal that Birmingham is getting its first Wine Weekend. Birmingham Wine Weekend is set to be a corker when it debuts this spring, and with the first 18 venues confirmed, the festival looks to be an oenophile’s dream. Aimed at novices, connoisseurs and everyone in between, venues across the city will be showcasing their favourite vines from 23-25 March 2018. We’ve got some of the city’s best-loved bars with the best wine lists and looks like there will be a bumper sign up for the event. Award-winning Hotel du Vin leads the line-up as the home of the festival, hosting the Birmingham Wine Weekend Hub where wine lovers will collect their wristbands before setting off to explore the city. Like all participating venues, Hotel du Vin will select two wines – a white, red and/or sparkling – on offer to wristband wearers for just £4 for the duration of the long weekend. Home to some of the city’s best bars, Colmore BID will be a must-visit destination for attendees, in addition to Bar Opus, venues including Gaucho, Chung Ying Central, Opus, and Great Western Arcade’s award-winning Loki Wine all taking part. They will also be joined by nearby neighbours The Botanist, Cosy Club and Amantia, who will continue the trail into the city’s central shopping area. Birmingham Wine Weekend has also bagged a number of venues from the Mailbox, including Malmaison, Tom’s Kitchen, Harvey Nichols, and AC Birmingham Hotel. Marco Pierre White and Bardalino in The Cube will join The Canal House in providing the perfect canal-side locations to discover new wines, hand-selected by each venue. Aria at the Hyatt will also uncork two of its favourite wines as one of this year’s official venues. Much like its sister festival, Birmingham Cocktail Weekend, Birmingham Wine Weekend is all about discovering different venues as part of a city wide journey. Wristband wearers will be able to spend “a night at the museum” as Edwardian Tea Rooms at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery takes part in the festival weekend. Having launched the city’s first ‘press for champagne’ buttons at the end of last year, wristband wearers may well get a sparkling reception as the team welcomes them through the doors. Organised by Living For The Weekend, Birmingham Wine Weekend is set to be an intimate festival giving lucky wristband wearers an exclusive journey of discovery through different wines and different venues. The three-day festival will showcase the best wine lists in Birmingham, with hand-picked venues offering two specially selected wines that will give festival goers the chance to discover something new. Wine lovers can purchase a £10 wristband online to get access to £4 taster glasses at each venue, as well as a handful of themed events. Speaking about the confirmed venues for Birmingham Wine Weekend, founder of Living For The Weekend, Alex NicholsonEvans, comments: “Birmingham Wine Weekend is all about encouraging people to try new wines, explore different venues across the city and experience the thriving bar scene that Birmingham has to offer. Christian Dior Accused of Copying Print
A global fashion house Christian Dior has been accused of copying its print from an Indian design studio. People Tree, a New Delhi-based studio, has claimed that a yoga print featured on a red cotton dress designed by the French luxury brans and worn by Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor on the cover of the January issue of Elle India magazine is very similar to one they created years ago. The collective of artists and designers was cofounded in 1990 by graphic designer Orijit Sen and his wife Gurpreet Sidhu and sells handcrafted cotton clothing as well as jewellery and accessories made using natural and biodegradable material. In a Facebook post on Jan. 23, Sen shared photographs of the original design and the wood block used to create it the prints The dress worn by the actress was part of Dior’s Cruise 2018 collection, designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri. People Tree produces only between 100 and 200 yoga-print pieces every year, selling them for around Rs1,500 each, which is certainly much less than what Dior is likely to charge for its version. “The main part of why People Tree exists is to give voice to creativity within India,” Sidhu said, adding that while copying happens all the time, Dior’s act is particularly offensive. People Tree is now consulting a lawyer.

Cysters Smear We have seen the vigorous awareness campaigns across the United Kingdom encouraging and inviting women to #SmearForSmear. The adverts are endorsed by celebrities and the community alike. Conversely, not many of these public figures adequately represent the BAME community, and that is no bodies fault. It's a sign that these campaigns will never get close to penetrating the bubble around this community. Awareness in ethnic community, particularly those who do not live in the United Kingdom is so negligible that many women are not only unaware but also ignorant of the preventive options available. If pre-cancer is detected early it can be treated. Thus, very few women will take preventative measures. An unwillingness to speak about cervical cancer is,

in part influenced by our cultural predisposition to stigmatise discussions on the sexual, gynaecological and reproductive health of women. In turn this perpetuates a culture of silence around the disease. Luckily women in the United Kingdom are more able to openly talk about these issues. This is in stark contrast to counties such as India, where discussing such topics is largely taboo, particularly for unmarried women. Why? Because it is immediately assumed to imply that they are engaging in premarital sex. The misogyny and attitudes to women are a big part in lack of knowledge, awareness and perpetuates the cultural of fear. Whether it is fear of physical pain of a smear test, accusations of promiscuity or the being ostracized by the community. Interesting premarital sex
does occur in most countries, this is an issue which relates to a much wider group. There is a real need to build awareness and openly discuss the importance of sexual, gynaecological and reproductive health and it is not confined to a small group of females engaging in “inappropriate behaviour”. Some religious groups believe cancer was the will of God. A study by Box (1998) aimed to seek the views and experiences of black and minority ethnic (BME) women on smear test screening for cervical cancer. The findings showed attitudes and beliefs about cervical cancer were linked with promiscuity and seen as a punishment from God. Therefore, some ethnic minority women there is a chance of being culturally and religiously stigmatised as a result of the belief that cervical screening is only
to raise awareness of cancer. Cancer affects everyone in different ways, all people have the power to take various actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities. World Cancer Day is a
chance to reflect on what you can do, make a pledge and take action. Whatever you choose to do ‘We can. I can.’ make a difference to the fight against cancer. #WorldCancerDay #WeCanICan
appropriate for those who are promiscuous. Changing people's behaviour based on their cultural beliefs and religion is no easy task. However, we should not abandon those women. Instead work collaboratively with organisations such as Cysters, who have slowly won the trust of these women, we have lived experiences and understand the social norms and values. To increase the uptake of cervical screening amongst ethnic minority groups remains a complex discuss. But one with light at the end of the tunnel if we can work together. Cancer doesn’t care who you are. But we do. We want to hear the views of cancer patients on the NHS care they have received. Feedback on the experience of an individual’s cancer care is important to us and will help us see what’s working and what needs to improve. We need to hear everyone’s views, particularly people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds who are under-represented in responses to our national surveys. If you have a loved one who’s had NHS cancer treatment, encourage them to have their say. Find out more at www.ncpes.co.uk/NHSfeedback
Pupils become ambassadors to champion good mental health
Pupils are being encouraged to become HeadStart ambassadors – and help shape projects which will improve the mental health and wellbeing of their peers. The ground-breaking HeadStart Wolverhampton programme is recruiting Year 7 pupils as mini ambassadors who will influence its services and help ensure it delivers the very best support for young people in the City. They will work alongside HeadStart’s Young People Engagement (HYPE) Team to shape provision in the four key HeadStart Wolverhampton target areas where need is known to be greatest: Low Hill, The Scotlands and Bushbury South; Springfield, Heath Town, Park Village and Eastfield; All Saints, Blakenhall, Parkfields and Ettingshall; and Bilston East. The mini ambassadors programme was officially launched with a special event at the Big Venture Centre in Low Hill on Thursday (18 January) attended by potential mini ambassadors and their parents. Sunita Pallan-Jhalli, Senior Young Person Engagement Coordinator, said: “We have been inundated with applications and it’s wonderful to see so many young people wanting to help preserve the mental wellbeing of their peers. “All our mini ambassadors have to complete a short application form, telling us a bit about themselves, why they want to become a mini ambassador and what they hope to bring to the role. “Our chosen mini ambassadors will be providing a voice for younger people in Wolverhampton, and have the opportunity to choose local initiatives and add value to community projects.”

As well as contributing to their local communities, they will become active agents of change Citywide, and have the chance to gain accreditation too. “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get involved in, and I would encourage Year 7 pupils in the four key HeadStart target areas to apply.” For more details about becoming a mini-ambassador, please email Sunita Pallan-Jhalli via headstart@ wolverhampton.gov.uk or call 01902 550851. New Jaguar F-Type Lister Thunder is a devil with 666bhp T
he British sports car maker Lister is set to reveal the all-new F-Type model at the Motorsport International expo in London. It is being dubbed the Lister Thunder and is the successor to the Lister Le Mans from the early 1990’s, which was based on the Jaguar. The Le Mans version was quite obviously based on the XJS Coupe and the new Thunder is quite obviously an F-Type, but with some bespoke features and tweaks that increase the overall performance of
the Thunder. Lister says that it’s the most powerful and luxurious car to ever roll off the company’s production line. Under the bonnet of the Thunder is Jaguar’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8, but with Lister’s special tweaking the Thunder will produce 666bhp. It is claimed by Lister that the Thunder can achieve 0-62mph in just over three seconds, with an amazing top speed well over 200mph. The carbon fibre front apron with an extended front
split help with the overall dynamics of the car. The badge is a Lister badge too, while bright green accents loop around the grille. New vents on the bonnet, a new carbon fibre rear bumper, and carbon fibre exhaust tips join these modifications. The cabin is laced with Weir Nappa leather upholstery, with a range of 36 colours for customers to choose from. All logos on the vehicle inside and out are replaced with the Lister motifs. The Thunder is priced from £139,950.
JLR To Cut Production Plant at Castle Bromwich Car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover is cutting back production at its Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham as it produced no cars at the plant for four weeks over Christmas, according to reports. A Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) spokesman said: "We can confirm that Castle Bromwich is currently undergoing planned, extended shutdowns. "This is due to reduced demand following challenging market conditions, especially reduced demand for diesel, in the UK. "We can also confirm that there have been no job losses at the plant." This follows an announcement made that production is to be cut at the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plant in Halewood, Merseyside. The car manufacturer claimed lack of consumer confidence for the need to cut production, and said Brexit is partly responsible. It also suggesting a fall in demand for diesel cars,
which have been blamed for pollution even though the modern diesel vehicles such as those produced by Jaguar use technology which cuts emissions significantly. Currently there are no plans to cut production at its Land Rover plant in Solihull or the engine factory in Wolverhampton. JLR said it had enjoyed another record breaking year
in vehicle sales - the seventh year of successive growth for Britain's largest car manufacturer. "However, the automotive industry continues to face a range of challenges which are adversely affecting consumer confidence." Birmingham MP Jack Dromey (Lab Erdington), whose constituency includes the Castle Bromwich plant,
said: "JLR is a world class company that has transformed the lives of thousands working in the Castle Browmich and Solihull plants. "The company is now being hard hit by the mishandling of Brexit and the transition from diesel. "The Government has got to get this right, because otherwise the problems will mount for a fine company and a fine workforce."
Fines Issued For Going Over 70mph On M1 Smart Motorway Motorists will be snapped by speed cameras 24-hours-a-day on smart motorways, according to traffic cops. Drivers will be issued with fines for breaking the 70mph limit on the M1 - even if there's no variable limit displayed on an overhead gantry. The standard fine for being caught speeding is £100 and three points - but for more serious offences the punishment can rocket. Derby road safety chiefs said they were "shocked" to discover their section of the M1 was the most profitable in 2017 - between Tibshelf services and junction 29A at Duckmanton. Darren Roberts, manager of the Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) for Derbyshire police, said prosecuting more people will help stop speeders. “The cameras are not there to generate money,” he told The Derby Telegraph. “They are there to catch speeders, get reckless drivers off the roads and ultimately lead to a reduction in collisions.” The M1 is just one of a number of stretches being converted into smart motorways alongside the M6, M25, M3, M20 and M5. The roads use overhead gantries to control traffic flow by changing speed from the national speed limit down to 30mph if there's traffic ahead. The hard shoulder can also be made into a live lane at peak hours - and you can be fined £100 if you ignore the Red Xs overhead, too. The cameras will operate 24-7 - meaning drivers will still be caught in the early hours of the morning when there is much less traffic on the route.

Junior Tendulkar An All-Rounder
Making the headlines Sachin Tendulkar son Arjun Tendulkar is now in the spotlight. The 18-year-old Arjun Tendulkar is taking everything in his elegant, languid stride and is an all-rounder. Taller and thinner than his legendary father, when asked about the stresses of continuing the name associated globally with an icon, he says: "I don't take that pressure. "When I bowl I just think hit the deck hard with every ball and when I bat I just play my shots, and choose which bowlers to take on and which not to." Arjun is a left-arm fast bowler and a left-handed batsman, the 18 year old could have easily followed his father’s footsteps and mastered in batting but he has become the fast bowling all-rounder. Arjun has revealed the reason for him becoming the pace bowler and how his stint with Wasim Akram helped him. "I used to play many sports as a kid, football, swimming, running, taekwondo," he reveals. "And then cricket just developed, while everything else took a back seat." Asked whether his father had been a decisive influence he adds: "He helped me a lot. But he didn't force me into it." As for the key question, whether he could foresee a career in cricket, the answer is again understated, but with a steeliness shown by his father during his 100 international centuries: "Yes, I'm working very hard to. That's my ultimate dream."

AMIR KHAN - Three fight deal and that water fight!
Amir Khan has signed a three-fight promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing – and returns to action on April 21 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, live on Sky Sports. The former unified LightWelterweight World champion and GB Olympic silver medal man is back in the ring following a successful appearance on reality show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’, and now Khan is focused on ruling the world once more – starting on Merseyside in April. Khan’s last outing was back in May 2016 when he stepped up to Middleweight to face Mexican star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and the 31 year old is back on Sky Sports for the first time since beating Devon Alexander in Las Vegas in December 2014 and a first fight in England since beating Julio Diaz in Sheffield in April 2013 – with the popular Bolton man determined to get
back into World title action as soon as he can, with an opponent for April 21 to be announced soon. “I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Matchroom,” said Khan. “This decision is not one I’ve taken lightly, as I’m at a hugely important time in my career, but having spoken to Eddie at length, it was clear he and I were on the same page in terms of what I want to be doing and what I still want to achieve. I’m determined to win another World Championship and I’m confident I’ve got the right team behind me to help me do so. “Just as important a factor was the opportunity to fight in the UK for the first time in five years, and to do so with the support of the British fans and Sky Sports behind me. British boxing is in such a good place and I genuinely can’t wait to get back in that ring with the incredible home support behind
me. “I’ve been out of the ring for too long, and I’m desperate to make up for lost time, starting in April.” Khan teams up with Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn, and his new promoter setting out the plan to land huge fights for Khan. “I am delighted to welcome former unified World Champion Amir Khan to the Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports Boxing team,” said Hearn. “Amir is one of the biggest names in the sport of boxing and his return on April 21 will be the first time he has boxed in the UK in seven years. “The plan is to box in April and then again in August or September in preparation for a super fight in Winter 2018. The target is to provide him with the biggest fights possible with a mouth-watering list of names including the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Kell Brook, Keith
Thurman and Errol Spence. I’m excited to get started and looking forward to a huge night of boxing on April 21.” An announcement on ticket on-sale dates will be made soon. Amir Khan will face Phil Lo Greco on his return to the ring at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on April 21, live on Sky Sports. They recently met at the prress conference where Lo Groco taunted Khan about his recent family feud, Amir got angry at a remark about his wife and Anthony Joshua and decided to grab a glass of water and throw it over Lo Groco. Khan responded by splashing water towards Lo Greco at the Liverpool press conference, prompting security to intervene before Khan insisted he would take the bout as seriously as ever. "When it goes to family, then I have to stand my ground,” said the former two-time
welterweight world champion. “It gets personal between us. "At the moment, it’s a sport but when they start getting personal then things might change. He got what was coming to him and he realised he said something stupid. “He didn’t get to me in that I got angry, I just wanted to put him in his place. There’s no point in him talking big, talking all this trash, thinking he’s going to get under my skin because he’s not going to. "I will train like it's a worldtitle fight. Greco says maybe I'm past my best. I'm 31 and at the peak of my career. For me, boxing is the way forward. Boxing put me here and I am going to finish on a high." "I have a great three-fight deal. To start in Liverpool, a great city, this will be another big one. He has just motivated me to go to the gym and work hard. I am going to give this guy a beating for 12 rounds."
