Acid Attack on Young Woman Man Hit By Car In A
young woman suffered horrific injuries in an acid attack and her home was burgled as she lay in her hospital bed. Afiya Begum, 26, was in the lobby of her apartment in Acocks Green after returning from the petrol station when she was hit by a bottle of hydrochloric acid on April 8 by a suspected schoolboy thug. She was rushed to hospital by a friend with painful burns across her face, shoulder, and neck after the random attack. Afiya says her house was robbed as she received emergency treatment after the horror attack and claims the police may have left her door unlocked. She said: "When I was in hospital the police went to my house. "They didn't need to go to my property, the attack happened on the ground floor. They needed to talk to me. "They should really have come to see me, but they didn't, they went to my house and my house was left insecure." When Afiya returned from Birmingham City Hospital a week after the attack she says she found her house had been burgled. She said jewellery, three bank cards, a television, and food were stolen in the raid. "When I got back from the hospital my door was open and I'd been robbed," said

Afiya. "They took everything jewellery, three bank cards, televisions, even food. "I have been to the police station on public transport to give my statement on the attack." West Midlands Police said they are currently investigating how the property came to be insecure. Police are also hunting the young attacker, who is described as white and aged between 14 and 16. Afiya has described the chilling moment she was targeted as she returned to her flat in Fox Hollies Road. "I went across the road to the petrol station and I think the person who attacked me was watching," she said. "When I was crossing the road I saw someone get out of a car but didn't think anything of it. "I was on the phone when I came back into the building. Then a man tapped me on the shoulder and I screamed and dropped my phone onto the floor. "Then he threw a whole glass of acid at me." She said: "I started screaming for help – he took my phone from the floor and ran away. "I made it onto the second floor where my friend was and he splashed water onto me. "He drove me to the hospital because the paramedics were taking
too long and my life was in danger. A spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating an attack in which a bottle of an acidic substance was thrown at a woman in Acocks Green on 8 April.
Police ask anyone who may have information to contact West Midlands Police on 101 and ask for Force CID at Stechford Police Station, giving crime reference 20BE/78080B/18.
An incident has been captured of a man being knocked down by a car in what appeared to be a deliberate crash on Ladypool Road, Sparkbrook. The victim, wearing a grey tracksuit, is seen standing in front of the car in the street challenging with the driver outside a dessert shop. The black Volkswagen drives towards the man with screeching tyres and deliberately swerves in his direction and ends up hitting one of the men in the group. The driver of a black Volkswagen was recorded driving into three men. The incident happened on Friday 4 May around midday. West Midlands Police said it was aware of the footage but it had not received any complaints about the incident. Officers appealed for anyone with information to come forward. A spokesman said: “We are aware of the video and have confirmed the incident took place on Ladypool Road in Sparkbrook - but it is not clear exactly when it happened. “This is a nasty incident in which a car has been deliberately driven at a member of the public. However, we have not received any reports from the public or a complaint from the victim. “We would encourage the person who was struck by the car to come forward, plus anyone else who was there at the time and witnessed what happened, so we can take action.”

Schizophrenic Sukhwinder Singh drives body to Police Station P
aranoid schizophrenic Sukhwinder Singh killed his brother-in-law before driving his body to a police station. He was arrested by officers from West Bromwich Police station after they found body of 39-year-old Harish Kumar in a BMW. Singh had driven around with the body in the car for few hours before he stopped at a police station car park last August. Mr Kumar from Willenhall, had suffered a stab wound to the chest. Singh, 41, of MacDonalds Close, Sandwell, had initially denied murdering Mr Kumar but later admitted manslaughter at Wolverhampton Crown Court and will be sentenced on June 29. The prosecution accepted that Singh was suffering from

paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the killing. Wearing a red T-shirt, Singh, followed proceedings through a Punjabi interpreter and pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. Prosecutor Nigel Power QC told the judge medical experts had said: “The defendant’s psychotic beliefs contributed to and explained the killing.” Judge Michael Challinor told Singh: “Following your plea you will be sentenced on June 29 and I am going to direct you are produced in good time that day for sentence. “I have no doubt you will co-operate now you are being medicated.” Paying tribute to Mr Kumar, his family said he was “a great, yet very humble man”.
Mum Stands Trial of Forcing Daughter To Marry In Pakistan
In a statement issued through police, a relative said: “He was always there
to help and he will be sadly missed - I just can’t believe that we’ve lost him.”
A mother is on trial accused of forcing her teenage daughter to marry a man more than ten years is continuing at Birmingham Crown Court. The defendant allegedly tricked the then 17-yearold into taking a trip to Pakistan, where the 'ceremony' is claimed to have taken place. However, we are unable to name her for legal reasons related to ensuring the victim's
anonymity. The court has heard allegations that the young girl was threatened by "ghosts" if she told anyone, while the defence claims she was the dominant character in her relationship with her mother. The defendant is charged with false marriage, perjury and perverting the course of justice. She denies all of the charges.
Entrance to Small Heath Park Daubed with Racist Graffiti
A local community group has hit out after racist graffiti was painted at the entrance to Small Heath Park off Waverley Road and on the brick wall of a property on Tennyson Road. Just hours before it was discovered on Monday 30 April more racist graffiti was spotted in Digby Park, off Somerville Road in exactly the same style and colour. The graffiti on the pillars has been removed. Naveed Sadiq, from community group, Bearded Broz, has been reporting the incidences to Birmingham City Council. He said: “It made me feel sick. “Schoolkids are having to see these racial slurs. Hopefully the people who are doing this will be caught. The majority of people stand against this. "It's horrible for the homeowner to have this on his property. “When it happened on a bus stop on Hobmoor Road last month, kids were asking their moms what the word meant. “Women are feeling a bit vulnerable because there is someone who has got a lot of hate towards them and they don’t know who they are." Mr Sadiq added: “Bearded Broz will stay on top of this. We want the perpetrator to know that the community is looking out for them.” A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said, “We deplore this sort of behaviour. "We always aim to remove offensive graffiti within 24 hours – information on how to request graffiti removal can be found on the Council website.” The council will remove racist or offensive graffiti within one working day and from homes for free.

Bakery Fined £21k For Zero Hygiene 8
MAY 2018
A Birmingham bakery in Small Heath and its owner have been fined over £21,000 after health inspectors found mice droppings throughout the premises. When a routine inspection was carried out by officers from the City council last year January there was droppings in several areas including the manufacturing and rear cooling rooms and they also discovered two pallets of smelly cracked eggs. Medina Bakery in Golden Hillock Road, admitted 21 breaches of food and hygiene regulations, was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £1,724 costs. Rashid Esakjee director of the company was fined £1,344. There were also holes in the skirting board and evidence of gnawed plastic sheeting. Julia Kettle, prosecuting, said the eggs, which gave off a smell, were unstamped, cracked, damaged and faecally contaminated. There was no

documentation to say where they had come from and potentially posed a risk to health. Due to the state of the bakery the business was issued with a prohibition notice and closed for two days. Miss Kettle said there was a second inspection on August 22 and the premises were found not to be clean. Officers found cobwebs and dirt in the corners of rooms. A fridge used to store yeast was filthy while its outside was covered in mould growth. An unknown and unlabelled food substance was found in a dirty container in the rear store room while a wash hand basin and tap in the kitchen were dirty while the only soap available was also dirty Tiles were also cracked while areas where food was handled and prepared were not maintained in a good condition. Miss Kettle said staff clothing was filthy while open
cardboard boxes of fruit and nuts were being stored on a shelf in the rear warehouse and not being protected from flies.
Esakjee told the court he was struggling financially and that the premises had completely changed and procedures were 100 per cent better.
Fraud Politician Making Comeback in Small Heath Election A former labour councillor sacked following the famous ‘banana republic’ vote fraud scandal is making a bid to return to Birmingham’s council chamber. Shafaq Ahmed who was removed from office by the Election Court which found vote rigging on an industrial scale in Aston and Bordesley Green during the 2004 local election The politician was banned from standing in elections for five years . He is now going by the name Shaaky Ahmed, will be standing as an independent candidate in next week’s local election. The fraud scandal in 2004 was one of the biggest in Birmingham political history and led to the city being compared by Judge Richard Mawrey to a ‘banana republic’. The case highlighted there had been a Birminghamwide campaign by parts of the local Labour Party to use bogus postal votes to counter the adverse impact of the Iraq war on the party’s support. Postmen were intimidated into handing over sacks full of postal votes, ballot papers
were changed once votes had been cast, using correction fluid, and police discovered six men in a warehouse with 274 unsealed postal votes. Mr Ahmed was one of three Bordesley Green councillors sacked. All three were later declared bankrupt over the costs of the legal battle.

Wholesaler Market Traders in Dispute with City Council 10
B
MAY 2018
irmingham City Council are investigating a series of complaints from traders on the Wholesale Market. Ten traders have formed their own breakaway federation to try to argue for better terms when the market moves to Witton this month. The traders have called themselves the BME Birmingham Wholesale Traders Federation, with the initials standing for ‘Black, minority and ethnic’, and say “80 to 100 jobs could be lost” if they were all to go bankrupt. Their grievances include: + Not being given enough notice about the move + Not being eligible for a contribution towards the move if they hadn’t signed a lease agreement in time, and + Being grouped together ‘in one corner’ of the new linear market Three of the traders have emailed Birmingham City Council, a spokesman said: “A small number of traders have raised some concerns which the city council is currently investigating.” Jointly signed by Ahmed
NEWS
WWW.THEASIANTODAY.COM
Patel (Fine Fresh Produce Ltd), Jawad Imdad (M&I Fruit and Veg Ltd) and Sunny Exotics’ employee Irfan Ahmed, the BME press release said: “The council has provided inadequate funding and contributions to all our members to allow them to fit out their units in the new market, whilst giving other firms preferential treatment by providing them with extremely generous contributions.” They added: “Our members could be set to incur losses of millions of pounds, forcing them to either lay off employees and many companies are also facing the dire prospect of bankruptcy. Both would result in loss of jobs and shows a negative effect of relocating the market. “We are small BME businesses who are the life and soul of the market and local business community. “We have a long and proud history of serving the people of Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Closure of these businesses will have a knock-on effect on many retailers across the West Midlands and nationally.
“These concerns have been brought to the attention of BCC, but they have failed to offer a solution or any assistance.” One of the traders Mr Patel from Fine Fresh Produce Ltd said that because he had been in dispute with the council about the location of his new unit, he had not signed a lease in time to qualify for his own £37,000 worth of relocation assistance. “We were only told on April 24 that the new market was opening on May 8. It’s not enough time – the lack of funding delayed the (new) fit-out many times,” said Mr Patel. “Being told that our last day of trading (on Pershore Street) would be May 5 was a bombshell. “The council did not consult with us individually. "The big traders are in the middle (of the new site). “Many Asian traders have been put in a block in one corner but they should have been allocated through a lottery,” he said. Mr Patel, aged 37, said the traders had launched their federation three weeks
ago as they did not feel the Birmingham Wholesale Fresh Produce Association represented them. Despite his grievances with the council and “admitting defeat” about which new unit he could have, Mr Patel said he would have preferred the new site to have been run wholly by the council.
Mr Patel added: “The new place is smaller and so should be easier for the council to manage on its own. “We want to move. We are paying tenants. "But we can’t store anything as we sell perishable foods and have to sell it. “The cost of fitting out the new units in some cases is more

than £100,000 and we don’t have that money unless we borrow it from the bank. “I have sent email after email, but the council has taken so long to sort everything out.” The market will be a place for wholesale customers to buy and take produce away from between 3.30am till 11.30am every weekday and from 3.30am to 9.30pm on Saturdays.

Vaiskhi in pictures - Pics by Jas Sansi Photography
The largest outdoor Vaisakhi ceklebration outside of India took place in Birmingham on 29th April 2018. Two processions headed towards Hansworth park, where the huge festival was being held - one from Hockley and the other from Smethwick. The Vaisakhi celebration is one of the biggest events in the Sikh calendar. It marks the anniversary of the founding of the order
of the Khalsa into which worshippers are initiated. It is also celebrated by the Hindu worshippers who celebrate the start of the new year, the harvest festival and a time to bathe in sacred rivers such as the Ganges. The actual date of Vaisakhi this year was 14th April, but as this is a large scale event it is organised as close as possible to the actual date. APCC Leads on Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Meet Young Review Chair On Friday 27th April 2018, David Munro, the APCC Lead on Equality, Diversity and Human Rights (EDHR) and Hardyal Dhindsa, the Deputy Lead on EDHR, met with Baroness Young of Hornsey and Dale Simon CBE, to discuss the Young Review Race Equality Audit of Police and Crime Plans. Amongst its findings, the Audit highlighted that the majority of Police and Crime Plans currently do not make in-depth references to issues affecting local BAME communities, and recommended that PCCs should set out in their plans how they meet their statutory duties under the Equalities Act. In the meeting, David and Hardyal discussed with Baroness Young the work that is going on in their areas and beyond to drive forward equality and diversity, and also highlighted that a key aim of the APCC and NPCC Policing Vision 2025 is to create a culture

Following the meeting, David said: “I am delighted to have begun such a constructive dialogue with Baroness Young. “The content of Police and Crime Plans will always be the responsibility of individual PCCs, in consultation with their Chief Constables, reflecting the needs of their local areas. “However, this Audit has provided us with an opportunity to think about how through our Plans, we can assure members of all the communities we represent that equality and diversity are at the heart of what we do. “I thank Baroness Young for opening this dialogue, and look forward to working with her on this further.” Hardyal said: “As with so much of what we do as PCCs, what is key here is sharing good practice, so we can learn from each

MAY 2018
To beat the long fasting hours, it is imperative to have the right choice of food during the holy month of Ramadan. So, while there is a lot of focus on Iftari, which is the time to replenish, it is equally important to indulge in a healthy Sehri to give an energetic start to the day to your day. Now, waking up at dawn and deciding what to eat may not be easy, but Asda has everything you need under one roof, plus inspiration to nourish, hydrate and strengthen your body to cope with the upcoming fast! Nutritionist Radhika Howarth from Radikal Kitchen, gives her top tips for Sehri dishes.
The pre-dawn meal, Sehri is an important aspect of Ramadan and with Asda by your side you have a variety of options to choose from
Paneer Bhurji Masaledaar Paneer Crepes
Watermelon Fruit Salad
Carbohydrates provide energy but at times paratha can feel a bit boring, so why not give it a bit of a twist and try Masaledaar Paneer Crepes instead. It is perfect for family Sehris and with Asda you have all the ingredients under one roof with Elephant Atta (10kgs for £4.50) for the perfect crepes, and for the stuffing, paneer (226g for £1.50) and Rajah Spices (100g paprika and whole jeera for £0.50).
To beat the heat during the long days of fasting, kickstart your Sehri with a refreshing watermelon fruit salad. One Asda Watermelon would be enough for the whole family for just £3. To give it a tangy twist, add some Asda Growers Selection Satsumas (600g for £1) along with some chaat masala.
Sehri Health Tip: The grains from atta and the protein in paneer make for a power packed Sehri.
Sehri Health Tip: The calcium and protein in paneer helps keep your bones healthy during Ramadan.
Sehri Health Tip: If Ramadan is making it difficult to have your five a day, well, 80g of watermelon constitute for one of your five a day and adding a couple of satsumas makes it two!
Dates Porridge
Keema Pav
Who said dates are only to be enjoyed when breaking the fast? This combination of dates, oatmeal and dry fruits makes for a wholesome Sehri. The best part is that it only takes around five minutes to prepare this power-packed breakfast. Just warm a bowlful of oats and milk and mix it with chopped dates and a handful of a few other dried fruits. And at Asda you can choose from Madinah Khudri Dates (450g for £2.60) or Sofra Tunisian (200g for £0.50).
If you are looking for a filling and spicy Sehri, the all-time favourite Keema Pav is your go to dish. But this year, give it a healthy twist by using white chicken mince instead of red meat mince, making it a tasty and leaner Sehri. And at Asda you can get 3 Shazan Chicken Breasts for £10, making it the perfect family value Sehri.
Sehri Health Tip: Oats contain a fibre called beta-glucan, which are said to help lower blood cholesterol and keep your heart healthy.
This quick and easy recipe, made from crumbled paneer simmered in spicy tomato gravy tastes great. Just wrap it in a roti or a paratha and it makes for a delicious Sehri. And to make cooking easier, you can pick up diced paneer cubes (250g for £2.50) and family paratha (160g for £2) to accompany it from your local Asda.
Sehri Health Tip:Chicken keema dish is a tasty option, which provides protein that is important for healthy muscles and bones.
Watermelon, Banana, Apple and Yogurt Smoothie: Give your day a colourful start with a combination of fresh fruits and the refreshing yogurt with a fruity smoothie. You could choose from Natural Bio Yogurt (1kg for £1) or Fat Free Yogurt (1kg for £1), and add bananas, apples and watermelon, which is on offer (1 for £3). Blitz the fruits and yogurts in the morning for a refreshing start to your fast. Sehri Health Tip: Fasting may make it difficult to have the recommended 6-8 glasses of water, with this fruity smoothie you’re already half way there and with yogurt you get a calcium boost too.
Aloo and Dal Tikki: Here is a new take on aloo tikkis with a mixture of dal to add plantbased protein. To prepare, use Asda White Potatoes (12.5kgs for £2.50), Asda Growers Selection Coriander (1 bunch £0.75) and Suraj Chana Dal (1.75kg for £2.50) along with cumin powder, garam masala and a few drops of lemon. Sehri Health Tip: For those looking for a veggie Sehri, this is the perfect meal with lentils providing plant-based proteins to help keep you going through the day.
Scrambled eggs with Frankfurters: Give your Sehri a desi twist and try scrambled eggs sprinkled with a bit of cumin and paprika and served with some diced Tahira Halal Frankfurters (340g for £0.75). Sehri Health Tip: The humble egg is a good source of inexpensive, high quality protein.
Date Granola This Sehri idea is power packed and perfect for those who are looking for something quick and light. All you need is honey, oats and cinnamon – plus your choice of Madinah Khudri Dates (450g for £2.60) or Sofra Tunisian (200g for £0.50).

Millionaire Dhillan Bhardwaj On Rich Kids Go Skint A
fter taking part in a TV experiment a young millionaire from Loughborough has experienced a complete lifestyle change living with a mum-of-five on benefits. Dhillan Bhardwaj, 21, who made his first million when he was just 16, designing clothes for celebrities will appear on this week’s episode of ‘Rich Kids Go Skint’. His designer clothing business Ratchet Clothing started in his parent’s garage, and he has since designed clothes for Rihanna, Drake, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and more. Dhillan will be living with Elaine Sullivan. who is on benefits, supporting herself and her five children. The series shows ‘rich kids’ sharing a home with families living on the breadline and will be aired on Channel 5’s 5 star. Dhillan did not find the lifestyle change too much of a culture shock, but wanted to take part to keep himself grounded. He told the Mercury: “My parents had a similar upbringing – most of my family were immigrants so they had to provide for themselves. “It wasn’t a reality check,
but I wanted to see how life is different if you are on benefits. “I have the chance to share that experience with other young kids who might look up to celebrities with loads of money. I wanted to show them that you can be happy with what you’ve got.” Dhillan stayed with the family for two days in their council home in Surrey. He was given various tasks during his stay which included cleaning out the chicken coop, and cooking meals.

He added: “When they shop, they go to charity shops, and when they get food, they get best before use I think it’s called or best before something. “It was just different, I even bought them a skip to get rid of all the s**t in their house because they couldn’t afford to get rid of it. “When I arrived, the family were so happy and welcoming. They knew my background and who I was which helped a lot, because I get quite bad anxiety meeting new people.
“When someone asks me what I do for a living, I sometimes want to say I work a normal nine to five job because I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging.” This is not the first time Dhillan has been on TV, he took part in Rich Kids Go Shopping on Channel 4, which showed how he spends his money. Although Dhillan is a millionaire, his take home pay each month does not reflect that. He said: “My parents take some of my earnings, so I don’t actually get paid that much. “I don’t mind telling you that I only get paid £750 a month, and with that money I can spend it on anything I want. The rest of the money goes into my family pot.” The experience was very fulfilling for Dhillan but he did notice differences between staying there and living at home. He added: “It was a very heartwarming experience, I really enjoyed it. “I live in such a big house though so it was very hard for me to get used to living in a place where the kitchen is just a step from the living room. “I usually have space when I need it, so that was difficult.” There are four Rachet stores across the country, in Long Eaton, Nottingham, Bedford and Sheffield.

Sikh Channel TV Caught Out for letting healer claim he could treat Illnesses
A Sikh TV channel in Birmingham has been caught by the broadcasting watchdog for allowing a healer to claim he could treat cancer. Ofcom said parts, shown on Sikh TV, breached its rules around protecting viewers from harm by failing to say they should contact a GP before taking homeopathic remedies. The watchdog said in its ruling: "The presenter claimed to be able to treat a serious of illnesses and conditions, including cancer, schizophrenia, heart conditions and Parkinson's disease. "He directly addressed viewers who were unwell, and therefore potentially vulnerable, and encouraged them to make appointments to see him." The channel also broke the rules by allowing contact numbers for the presenter's own business to be broadcast. The offending slot was shown on the Sikh Channel at 4pm on June 7 last year. Presenter of the channel encouraged sick and 'vulnerable' callers to book appointments at clinics in Birmingham, Manchester and Milton Keynes. He urged viewers with a wide spectrum of problems to call him with "any question regarding any physical, mental or emotional issues". The presenter also told callers "alternative treatments" could be used to cure infertility problems, phobias of flying and illnesses like breast cancer or cystitis. In relation to lung problems, the healer stated that inhalers given by doctors were only "temporary" and that to cure medical issues permanently, "you have to come and meet us". Once the Sikh Channel was made aware of the complaint, further programmes featuring the healer were pulled, Ofcom said. The regulator said it recognised the steps taken and reminded the channel of its role to ensure broadcasts "adhere to the code".

aving grown up in a close-knit family, for Anisa, Ramadan is about togetherness along with introspection and selfreflection. “Ramadan is a special month for my family, where we come together for Iftari and prayer. As our lives have become busier, it is the one thing I have made sure that I pass on to my three children – continuing the tradition, so they understand the meaning of Ramadan.”
Working at a radio station, Anisa has a busy routine but she still makes it a point to make chaats, samosas and pakoras at home for the whole family. “I remember years ago, we had to plan beforehand because it wasn’t easy getting all the desi ingredients, but now it has become so much easier with supermarkets such as Asda stocking up everything. Now I can just drive back home from work
and pick up all I need on the way.” For Anisa life is constantly changing and with the increase in Sehri and Iftari options, the change is good. “My mother cooked everything from scratch, for me it’s a mixture of scratch cooking and buying readymade food such as Aisha’s Samosas or Gino’s chicken nuggets, while my daughter buys everything from the supermarket.”

The social media campaign #Match4Rajie is a race to save the life of an 11 year old cricket mad boy. Rajie was in the middle of trials to play cricket for his county when diagnosed with Leukaemia. This news was a great shock to his family as Rajie has always been a very active and sporty little boy. Treatment started immediately but the chemotherapy has not been effective. The only hope now is a bone marrow transplant. It was hoped that Rajie’s 12-year-old sister would be match but, to his family’s despair, she wasn’t. It is still possible to find a donor, but his best chance of a match is from someone of the same ethnic background. As South Indians, we are automatically at a disadvantage as there are just not enough of us registered on the Stem Cell Register. Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic have only a 21% chance of finding the perfect match. There is only a 60% chance of finding just a partial match. Registering to be a donor is very simple, and right now it’s critical. If you are a match, being a life-saving donor could be as simple as providing blood. We URGENTLY need more of us on the register to give Rajie, and others like him, the best chance at winning the battle against Leukaemia. If you are between 17–55, please visit https://www. dkms.org.uk/en/register-now to request a swab pack. Providing three samples takes two minutes of your time and could help save lives. As a donor you will be giving hope to so many people and you would be supporting Rajie’s family in our search to find his life-saving match. Please visit Rajie’s Facebook page, Match4Rajie or on Twitter at Match4Rajie.

The annual Sir Doug Ellis OBE Apprenticeship Awards Evening was held recently at the Macdonald Burlington Hotel in Birmingham City Centre. The 'beast from the east' scuppered plans for the scheduled awards night back in March when the event had to be cancelled as snow descended on the city, closing roads and along with freezing temperatures it made it too dangerous for guests to venture out. It was another successful year for apprentices at the college, with awards for Hospitality and Catering going to Peter Guiden, Health and Social Care to Amanda Bryan, Construction to Stuart Constable and Joseph Parker, Business Administration to Ramisha Haven, Creative and Digital Media to Ben Rozzier, with the overall winner of the South & City College Apprentice of the Year award going to Stuart Constable. The Sir Doug Ellis OBE Special Achievement Award was awarded to Emma Newman, Business Administration. West Midlands Police won the Large Employer of the Year Award with Managed Enterprise Technologies winning SME Employer of the Year Award. The college’s business network InBusiness Special Recognition Award was awarded to Grant Smith and the National Federation of Builders Excellence in Construction Award was won by Dylan Wilson. Our compere for the evening was once again Tom Ross, who does a great job as MC at this spectacular event every year. Tom is a fantastic Ambassador for the college. Nearly 200 guests were seated in the Horton Suite with Mike Hopkins, Principal and Stacey Barnfield, Edwin Ellis Media, launching the evening of celebration with some incredibly inspiring speeches.
Business leaders, college staff and 'high flying' apprentices, along with their guests, created an audience that showed passionate and enthusiastic support for the presentations throughout the night. Steve Dourass said “Once again we showed that through bringing businesses, organisations and 'key' leaders from across our communities together, we can make a real difference to the future careers of our students. This was an incredible night of celebration that inspired everyone in the room to do more whilst developing more relationships to help create the future workforce of our region" The college’s chosen charity for 2018-19 is Cure Leukaemia and James McLaughlin, CEO of Cure Leukaemia talked passionately about the charity and shared some really inspiring stories. The evening raised nearly £2000 in donations, with prizes from Porsche Centre Solihull, Mainstream Print and the Macdonald Burlington Hotel. A massive thank you to our sponsors, some who support us every year and others who come on board to share the success of our students – Open College Network West Midlands, Aston University, Asian Today, Macdonald Burlington Hotel, Mainstream Print, Century Intelligent Learning, Porsche Centre Solihull, Cache, the National Federation of Builders and of course, the one man who supports the college in so many ways including his generous financial support - helping to create this spectacular event of celebration – Sir Doug Ellis OBE. THE ASIAN TODAY Man Jailed For Grooming and Told her To Sajid Javid The UK’s New Teenager Lie To Police Home Secretary Sajid Javid has become the new Home Secretary after Amber Rudd’s exist. Mr Javid is the first BAME holder of one of the great offices of state. Born in Rochdale, he is son of a bus driver who has risen to the top of British politics. His parents were born in India but fled to Pakistan while small children. His father arrived in Britain in the 1960s Mr Javid has said he came with £1 in his pocket. Mr Javid said he would review immigration policy to make sure it was fair and people were treated with "dignity and respect. Rudd became the fifth departure from the Cabinet since last year's snap general election, after admitting she had "inadvertently" misled
MPs over the existence of targets for removing illegal immigrants. Mrs May said she was "very sorry" to see her successor as home secretary leave the post, while Ms Rudd's opposite number Diane Abbott said she had "done the right thing". The pressure had been rising on the former banker ever since the emergence of the "appalling" treatment of Caribbean immigrants to the UK between 1940s and 1970s - the so-called Windrush generation. Concerns had been raised about the immigration status of the Windrush generation claims had been made of people being forced to prove their near-continuous presence in the country in order to show they were here
legally. Ms Rudd referred to the Windrush "scandal" in her resignation letter, admitting that people with a right to live in the UK had not always been treated "fairly and humanely".
OUR PRICES ARE GOOD BUT OUR WORK IS BETTER
In addition dealing with the backlash over the Windrush scandal, Mr Javid will have to address concerns about increasing gun and knife crime as well a difficult counter-terror climate in England and Wales.
A vulnerable teenage girl received a call from her perpetrator from prison to ask her to lie to police. Waheed Jahangir, 37, from Longsight, has been jailed for three years and eight months after pleading guilty to child sexual exploitation offences. Manchester Crown Court heard how officers first spotted a missing 16-year-old girl in Jahangir’s car in May last year. The police found empty vodka bottles and there were signs of sexual activity. Specialist officers spoke with the teenager, who said Jahangir had been messaging her for months and would buy her alcohol. Police searched his house and they seized a mobile phone containing indecent images of his victim, and messages showing he had groomed the victim when she was 15. Jahangir, of Naburn Street,
Longsight, was remanded in custody but in January 2018, a burner phone was found at the teenager’s house which he had used to contact her from prison. During calls, he had asked her to tell police that the messages he had sent before she was 16 were a joke He pleaded guilty to grooming, possession of indecent images of a child, sexual activity with a child and perverting the course of justice.
Two major supermarkets Sainsburys and Asda have confirmed they are merging to create the UK’s biggest food group in a sensational £15bn deal. A merger between Asda and Sainsbury's will create the UK's biggest supermarket chain with around 31 per cent of the grocery market, surpassing Tesco's 27 per cent. The new supermarket group will have combined revenues of £51billion and will aim to generate £500million in cost savings. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will soon start its investigation of the proposed merger, raising the prospect that Sainsbury’s and Asda
will be forced to sell off stores if they directly compete in local areas. However, Sainsbury’s insisted that it does not expect to shut any stores. The supermarket says its store footprint is more focused on the south, and Asda has more stores in the north. The chains will continue to trade under their separate brands and stores will keep the same names. Bosses could aim to make savings by sharing some back-room operations such as purchasing and distribution. Asda chief executive Roger Burnley said: "Asda will continue to be Asda, but by coming together
with Sainsbury's, supported by Walmart, we can further accelerate our existing strategy and make our offer even more compelling and competitive." Sainsbury's chairman David Tyler said: "We believe that the combination of Sainsbury's and Asda will create substantial value for our shareholders and will be excellent news for our customers and our colleagues. "As one of the largest employers in the country, the combined business will become an even greater contributor to the British economy." Asda and Sainsbury's both promised its customers that it would see savings in their weekly shop.

ndia’s famed monument of love, the Taj Mahal is changing colour and the supreme court has instructed the government to seek foreign help to fix what it described as a worrying change. The court said the famous tomb, built in the 17th Century from white marble and other materials, had turned yellow and was now turning brown and green. India’s Supreme Court is not pleased and said “You all appear to be helpless,” a Supreme Court judge told government officials after an
River, alongside the palace, attracts insects which excrete waste onto the palace's walls, staining them. The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the city of Agra and is now one of the world's leading tourist attractions, drawing as many as 70,000 people every day. The Taj Mahal has several times over the past two decades has been coated in a mud pack to clean the dirt issues but there are fears the problem is worsening. Its most recent mud bath began in January. Scaling the walls on scaffolds, workers plaster the surfaces with Fuller's earth, a mud paste that absorbs dirt, grease, and animal excrement. The mud is then washed off, taking the dirt with it. Another Supreme Court hearing has been set.
environmental lawyer argued that pollution and insect dung were discolouring the 17th-century building. Justices Madan Lokur and Deepak Gupta examined photographs of the mausoleum submitted by environmentalists and ordered the government to seek expertise from inside India and abroad. The government has previously shuttered thousands of factories near the Taj Mahal, but activists say its marble is still losing its lustre. Sewage in the Yamuna

The woman told the police that after the fight, she strangled her husband to death at their residence, Desai said, adding that she did not disclose the exact date of the crime. The woman informed about the incident to her husband’s three friends, following which the three men volunteered to help her in disposing of the body, he said. The four accused cut the body into three pieces and packed it in gunny bags. The police are investigating the case to see if more people were involved in the crime.

The New Smokey Barrels Bar & Grill The new Smokey Barrels has arrived on the Coventry Road bringing a bit of Americana to the south of Brum. Let Smokey Barrels introduce you to the joys of the Smokehaus. It's so much more than a homestyle barbecue concept. The techniques are bred from the traditions of good old American barbecue developed from the Southern States. The smoke from the burning wood is the essential ingredient to dishes. The meat is lovingly slow cooked over a real wood fire. It infuses the meat with its tone and flavour to create the rich, deep and distinctive smoky taste that makes the barbecue food so authentically mouth-watering.
Wolverhampton Mum in Britain’s Best Home Cook Show

Diners can expect a Texan BBQ restaurant with a spicy twist. So, roll up those sleeves and get stuck into a menu full of smokehouse favourites… think low and slow ribs, ultimate burgers and rib-eye steaks all straight from the in-house hickory smoker. Why not enjoy the ‘Smokey’s platter’? A platter of wings done your way, pulled pork, crispy southern fried chicken strips, corn on the cob, onion rings and BBQ pit beans!

Who developed the first Cryosauna for Cryotherapy treatments? The first Whole Body Cryotherapy(WBC) chamber was created in Japan in the late 1970s for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. The treatment was not introduced to Europe until the late 1980s and over the course of the last two decades, studies have established WBC as a powerful treatment for inflammatory injuries and disorders. Whole Body Cryotherapy was introduced in the United States in the last decade. How does Whole Body Cryotherapy differ from an Ice bath? An ice bath is typically a 10 – 15 minute soak in ice water that causes the blood from your extremities to move to your core and lower the body’s temperature. Whole Body Cryotherapy is typically a 3 minute dry cold session where the top skin layers and cold receptors respond to the cold by lowering the skin surface temperature by 30 to 50 degrees. This triggers the bodies blood to move from your extremities to the core. When the session is complete your body is triggered to release anti-inflammatory molecules, endorphins, and nutrient rich oxygenated blood How does the whole body cryotherapy work? The user stands inside of the cryochamber and the certified technician will perform the treatment. The special octagonal shape of the chamber ensures that the clients head remains outside of the chamber during the 2 – 3 minute treatment process. The certified technician will then fill the Impact chamber with Nitrogen Vapor, which will drop the temperature of the chamber to -110 degrees Celsius to -130 degrees Celsius. This temporarily lowers the temperature to the skin’s top layer. What do I wear while inside of the cryotherapy chamber and do I shower before or after? Men will wear cotton socks, cotton underwear, and gloves. Women will wear cotton socks, cotton underwear (optional), sports bra (optional), and gloves. We will supply the cotton socks, gloves, and a robe for your comfort. No metal should be worn into the cryochamber. How long does a cryotherapy session last? A cryotherapy session will last anywhere from two, to a maximum of three minutes per session. What can I expect to feel after my cryotherapy session? During the session clients have reported feeling the body release endorphins, which will make you feel good and energetic. Clients have reported that this effect can last 6 – 8 hours, which like any therapy, can get better the more sessions you have over time. Cryotherapy has been reported by some to prompts a number of positive reactions in the body including a boost in blood circulation, an increase in collagen production, improved sleep, overall increased energy, and an increased metabolic boost. Are there any restrictions after my whole body cryotherapy treatment? There are no restrictions after your whole body cryotherapy treatment. In fact, clients feel refreshed and energized. Reproductive and Mental Health The intersection of sexual, reproductive and mental health, has rarely been researched in the ethnic community. In 2018, is the taboo that real that participants are still unable to come forward, and is the research we do have truly representative? Do they realise they have mental health issues, or is it simply ignored. I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at parliament at the Launch of British Sikh Report about reproductive health and its link to mental health, that is not to say that section of the community are the only ones who suffer this problem, the issues can and do effect anyone. Depression is one of the most common and most disabling disorders worldwide. The stigma attached also is just as rife. Gynaecological symptoms and complications can present itself as a form of
chronic pain, and sometimes invisible. Interestingly, anxiety and depression typically presents in the form of medically unexplained physical symptoms. Chronic pain is a term used to describe pain that lasts beyond the typical time it takes for an illness or injury to heal. Sometimes chronic pain is also described as pain that lasts longer than three months. Research suggests that anywhere from 30 to 50% of people with chronic pain also struggle with depression or anxiety. So why isn't this a topic that is being discussed. We tend to treat women displaying and complaining of these conditions by gynaecologists but lack referrals to Mental Health teams when the need is clearly there. We need to treat these women holistically and as a whole, and include mental health as part of this. The National Institute for
Clincal Excellence, states 1 in 2 women will have a reproductive health issue in their lifetime. It is highly likely that these women will have mental health related issues as either a by-product of their chronic pain, (and let’s be honest, how can they not when in chronic pain!) Or related to their hormones and mood disorders. So it’s a conversation that

Transformation of Birmingham Wallmart takeover India's International Station Secured Flipkart T
he plans to transform Birmingham International Station into a fully integrated transport exchange linked to the new HS2 Interchange Station in Solihull has been given a major boost after £9.27m was secured to progress the design process. The Urban Growth Company (UGC) set up by Solihull Council to maximise the benefits of HS2’s arrival has secured the Devolution Deal funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) at its Investment Board meeting. The funding will allow the UGC to appoint consultants to progress the technical design of the station, and design and build contractors to undertake the physical delivery of the project. The UGC’s plan is to transform the existing station into a multi-modal transport exchange bringing together existing rail, future high speed rail, air, trams, buses, rapid transit, private vehicles, taxis, bicycles and an automated people mover, through seamless connections to Birmingham Airport and the HS2
Interchange Station by 2025. The UGC predicts The Hub has the potential to create up to 77,500 new jobs, 775,000 sq m of commercial space, 4,000 new homes and £4.1bn GVA each year. Nick Brown, chairman of the Urban Growth Company, said: “This project is strategically important because of its role in
unlocking major growth and development, as well as improving accessibility and connectivity. “It also means that Birmingham International Station, which is set to become one of the busiest stations in the UK, will become an iconic gateway to the region with greater capacity and a much-
improved passenger experience.” The estimated cost of the entire Birmingham International Station project is £286m and the UGC will continue working with regional and central government to secure funding to deliver the project by December 2025.
Wallmart have agreed to pay about $16bn to take control of India's biggest online retailer, Flipkart. The deal makes Wallmart as big as Amazon. Walmart will take 77% stake of Flipkart valuing the Indian company at over $20bn. Flipkart has seen fierce competition from Amazon
since it started trading in India five years ago. Founded in 2007, Flipkart has high-profile investors including Microsoft, Tencent and Softbank that will retain their stakes. Online sales in India were worth $21bn last year, according to market research firm Forrester, so this is a big coup for Walmart.
Salaries across Birmingham rose by one per cent last month as competition for top candidates remained fierce. That’s according to new date from independent job board CV-Library. The data explored fluctuations in salaries, jobs and applications throughout April and compared these with statistics from March 2018. The findings reveal that
Birmingham was one of the few UK cities to see salaries rising month-on-month. However, average pay fell 1.4 per cent year-on-year. Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CVLibrary, said: “It’s great to see that employers across Birmingham are remaining positive in the face of ongoing uncertainty and that many are continuing to invest in their recruitment efforts.

irmingham streets could be looking at bringing motor racing after it emerged talks to bring Formula E to the city are well advanced. According to reports, West Midlands mayor Andy Street is in advanced talks to bring the electric car racing series to the second city.
The city would feature alongside the likes of New York, Paris, Mexico City and Rome on the calendar. The event was last staged in Britain in 2016 when the London E-Prix took place in Battersea Park. Mr Street said: “We are in the final stage of negotiations with Formula E
to bring racing to the West Midlands. “Formula E is all about electric cars and one of the reasons we want to do this so much is that electric cars are going to play a critical part in the future of the West Midlands economy. “It fits in with the big story. We want to showcase
our region to the world, and this will enable us to join the series alongside Rome, Paris, Berlin, Zurich, New York... world leading cities who also have a race in the calendar. “I am hoping we will seal the deal in the next few weeks. Negotiations have gone well and I am very confident.”

Midland Metropolitan Hospital needs an £125 million to complete T
o continue the construction on the 669-bed Midland Metropolitan Hospital an extra £125 million is needed. The opening of the longawaited hospital, serving patients in Birmingham and the Black Country, is set to be delayed until 2020 even if the cash is provided. NHS managers warn that further delays could damage A&E services currently provided at City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell Hospital . West Midlands mayor Andy Street has written to Cabinet Minister David Lidington warning: "I strongly believe swift intervention is now required on this specific
issue." The hospital, in Smethwick, was previously expected to cost £350 million. The construction has been stalled since the collapse in January of construction giant Carillion, which was building it on behalf of Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust. Toby Lewis, Chief Executive of Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust, has said: "We are currently providing emergency services across two hospitals. "Trying to stretch our staffing and resources across two hospitals is difficult. "The certainty of having a single hospital site means that we can provide better quality services. It also means that staff want to come and work for us. "Over the past year we have hired over 130 new nurses, many of them attracted by the promise of coming to work in purposebuilt facilities. "Every month that goes by where there is uncertainty and delay eats in to our ability to deliver high quality services." The new Midland Metropolitan hospital was originally due to open in
October 2018, but this was delayed to spring or summer 2019 even before the collapse of Carillion. West Midlands Mayor Andy Street has told Ministers that Swedish construction giant Skanska could step in to the breach and resume construction. However, the funding would be required quickly - possibly involving the Government taking on the debt involved in building the project. The original plan was for the private sector to take on the debt, as part of what is known as a PFI scheme. Prime Minister Theresa May has already promised the Government will help get construction moving again, telling the House of Commons this week: "We recognise the level of concern that is being raised on this issue and we are working to resolve it."

Land Rover Celebrates 70 Years Land Rover marked its 70th birthday on April 30, the day marks the global unveiling of the original Land Rover model at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948. To mark its 70th anniversary, Land Rover is restoring one of the three pre-production Land Rovers that had been shown at the model’s launch at the 1948 Amsterdam motor show. Jaguar Land Rover CEO, Dr Ralf Speth, said: “Land Rover is an iconic brand around the world and
the outline of the Defender is instantly recognisable. “To reach the landmark of 70 years is truly special and we will mark it with a year of celebrations that represents Land Rover’s ‘Above and Beyond’ spirit and honours the people behind the world’s favourite SUVs.” In 1978, Land Rover was spun off into its own company, which is now owned by Tata Motors Since that car was first shown in 1948, Land Rover has sold more than 7 million cars.
Speed Cameras to Return in The Black Country
Enforcement cameras have been successfully tested in Birmingham and Coventry and West Midlands Police chiefs are now keen to open talks with Black Country councils over the cameras. Sandwell and Walsall councils today also said they were considering the enforcement, while
Wolverhampton has not ruled them out. Walsall Council’s Steve Pretty, head of planning, engineering and transportation, said: “Outcomes from the pilot are being considered in conjunction with the other Black Country authorities and West Midlands Police.
“Funding has been identified via Walsall Council’s Capital Programme for a combination of average speed cameras, spot cameras and red light cameras if it is decided that this is the best way forward.” Ken Tudor, spokesman for Sandwell Council, said: “The trial in Birmingham and Solihull is being undertaken on behalf of the West Midlands. “Along with the remaining Black Country authorities Sandwell has also expressed its interest in bringing average cameras into our borough, once the trial has ended and the results have been assessed. “We will work with West Midlands Police and our neighbours to bring a consistent approach to average speed enforcement of some of our more major routes.” A spokesman for Wolverhampton council said:
“There are no approved or fixed plans for the introduction of average speed enforcement cameras into Wolverhampton. “However, we are keen to explore options in the future following the trials in Birmingham and Coventry.” Insp Kerry Blakeman, from the camera enforcement unit at West Midlands Police, said: “In Solihull and Birmingham, across eight sites, we have seen a reduction of around 20 per cent in speeds. “The average speed cameras offer a greater solution to reducing speeds than the static cameras.” He added: “We have approached all of the local authorities in the West Midlands. “Wolverhampton are looking into it, Coventry are taking it on. I’d welcome other authorities to come forward.“ Insp Blakeman said the cameras not only slowed vehicles down but improved safety and traffic flow. The police claim the cameras do not make money and all funds are put back into maintaining the cameras.
Increase in Car Theft
New figures show a high increase in the number of vehicle thefts, prompting concern about the security of keyless technology. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), some 89,000 vehicles were stolen in England and Wales last year – up by 56% from 57,000 in 2016. The RAC describes the statistics as “nothing short of shocking”. The ONS says there has been a “noticeable change” in the way car thieves are gaining entry, with a big rise in the number of unlocked cars being stolen. According to the statistics authority, entering a vehicle through an unlocked door now occurs in half of all car thefts, while forcing a lock account for just one in seven. The ONS figures come
in the wake of reports that devices known as “relay boxes” are being bought online by criminals, who use them to extend the signal from a car owner’s fob and unlock the vehicle. RAC insurance spokesman Simon Williams said: “While we know that the picture is an uneven one across the country, the fact that 32,000 more people were victims of car theft last year compared to 2016 is nothing short of shocking. West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson is among those voicing concern about the growing problem. “I’ve been saying for a long time now that car theft is becoming an epidemic, with criminals increasingly outsmarting manufacturers,” he said.

Lionel Messi hits hat-trick WINNING LA LIGA TITLE Barcelona is celebrating another Spanish league title to cap a nearly perfect season. Lionel Messi scored a hat trick as Barcelona clinched the La Liga title with a 4-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna. Barcaleona went into the match knowing a point would be enough to see them regain the trophy with four matches still to play. Messi added two late goals to complete the 46th hat-trick of his
career. "We know how difficult it is to win this league," Messi said. "We were better than our rivals. There is a lot of merit to winning this title without any losses." Barcelona has won 26 league games and drawn eight, with four matches left. It was Barcelona's seventh league title in 10 seasons and 25th overall. Real Madrid, last year's champion, leads with 33 La Liga trophies.
The FA receives offer for Wembley Stadium The Football Association received an offer, thought to be worth £800m, to sell Wembley Stadium. Reports are the prospective buyer is billionaire owner of Fulham Football Club, Shahid Khan, who also owns the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team. It is understood the approach includes £500m for the stadium and £300m for the FA to keep the Club Wembley debenture and hospitality business. NFL executive vicepresident Mark Waller said having stadium options in London has been "critical to the NFL". His statement added: "The potential purchase

Maradona Quits As Coach Maradona Quits As Coach of UAE Team. Argentine legend Maradona, former World Cup winner and one of football's most divisive figures resigned as coach of United Arab Emirates second division club Al Fujairah after his team failed to gain promotion, his lawyer Matias Morla announced. The lawyer insisted that the decision "had been a mutual agreement" with the club and that he wished Al Fujairah "the best". Maradona, 57, was appointed coach in May last year with the task of getting Al Fujairah back into the top flight after a two-year absence. However, the game on Friday 27 April with a 1-1 draw against Khorfakkan meant that the team cannot finish any higher than third in the table.
