Mandeep Dhillon on taking Anita & Me to Stage
1
How did you get the role?
5
I went to the audition, which my agent sent me to, after that I was sent to another audition. I then received a call which confirmed my part. 2
How does it feel to be chosen for the role for such a prestigious production? I was really happy with it. I enjoyed the movie. So, to be honest, I was really happy and I’m really excited about starting rehearsals.

Meera Syal’s much loved novel bursts onto the stage for the first time. The poignant comingof-age tale follows Meena, the irreverent teenager daughter of the only Punjabi family in the mining village of Tollington. When she becomes friends with the impossibly feisty Anita, she thinks she’s found her soul mate but her world is turned upside down and she finds herself caught between two cultures. The stage show will be debuting at Birmingham’s REP theatre on October 9th and starts Mandeep Dhillon and Ameet Chana among others. Mandeep sat down with DesiXpress to talk about the upcoming play.

Anita & Me is a very well known production. Have you read the book and what is your favourite part? No, I haven’t read the book, but I have watched the movie. My favourite part is when she is dancing in front of her family and she swears! That bit always sticks out for me so when it comes to theatre production we will have to be careful! What do you think about the script and when do rehearsals start? I think the script is funny. I loved it and I love the character! Meena is ‘out there’ so it is going to be really fun to play. We start rehearsals on 8th September. out for me so when it comes to theatre production we will have to be careful!
5
How is your chemistry with the rest of the cast? It’s brilliant! We had a workshop and we’ve had two days of learning songs. That was where we met the cast and they were so lovely! Have you met Meera Syal yet? No! I haven’t. But I do meet her soon. When I was y o u n g e r used to watch her on Goodness Gracious Me. I have also been a fan of her work and a fan of her just as a woman. Just to have a conversation with her is going to be lovely. To have her at the show is going to be amazing. I am actually playing her because the book is actually based on her which is going to be really interesting.

his month, we sadly said goodbye to a pillar of the music and entertainment industry, Tony Singh Pabla. Tony suffered a severe headache and collapsed at his residence in Leicester. He was admitted to hospital in critical condition. Doctors advised that a blood vessel burst in his brain during the fall resulting in a coma. Tony, peacefully, passed away two days later at the Royal Infirmary Hospital in Leicester, with his family and close friends by his side. Tony was known worldwide for his commitment to the Asian entertainment industry. In just one day, over 2.5 million interactions were created on social media sending Tony prayers and support. As the co-founder and face of popular site Punjab2000.com, Tony had helped launch and support the careers of many artists over the years. Punjab2000 will soon be celebrating their fifteenth anniversary, thanks to Tony’s commitment and passion behind the scenes working day and night to run the site. Close friend and colleague Valraj ‘Baja’ Banning shares, "Tony was the true perfectionist to work with. Any deviation from his plans would cause mayhem, be it the way a photo was taken or the way an interview was conducted, or simply taking note of his advice to achieve a goal. As far as Punjab2000/Friends Electric/the Asian music industry, friends and family
are concerned - there will never ever be another Tony Singh Pabla.” Many know Tony from the years of running his electrical shop in Leicester, Friends Electric. He will forever be remembered as one of the industry’s influential pioneers from Bhangra daytimers, to concerts and behind the scenes of huge named artists. He was always at the end of the phone day or night, no matter how big or small the artist or problem, Tony Singh Pabla would have the time for you. Tony continues to help people as his wish was to donate his organs. Tony was extremely passionate about being an organ donor and helped to spread awareness about this cause. The entire team at Punjab2000 send our love and condolences to the family. Tony was a family man, and brought us all together as one. The industry mourns a tragic loss. His passion and genuine nature was like no other. The Asian Today would like to pay their respects to Tony Singh Pabla. Anita and Ifraz have met Tony on a number of occasions who was always approachable and amiable. Tony will be well remembered as a leading figure within the Asian media industry and his legacy will live on through his contribution to the world of Punjabi music and we were fortunate to have known him.

Birmingham Vigil Remembers Aylan Kurdi Photography: Adam Yosef
Continued from front page He said: “It’s really good to see so many people supporting us after just two days of planning. We want a safe path for people from Syria to find shelter in Europe so they do not have to turn to desperate methods to try and escape war and persecution. “There is constant shelling, no electric, no water and nothing to do. All you can do is stay at home. Before there was hope, now there is no future. Everyone just wants to escape from the situation. There is no end.” In their search for safety, some people are forced to make difficult decisions to attempt to reach EU member states. With very few legal and safe routes overland, many thousands of refugees are embarking on perilous sea journeys. Often making the trip toward Europe on flimsy and crowded dinghies, they are risking – and losing – their lives in the attempt. At least 2,000 people are thought to have died at sea so far this year. It is not known how many others may be planning the dangerous voyage. Increasingly, women and children are among those endangered in what has become the worst refugee crisis since World War II. One charity helping the international refugee is Islamic Relief. “Islamic Relief aid workers have been deployed to Greece, where we will coordinate with other
humanitarian actors on the island of Lesvos to determine how best to assist. Working closely with partners on the ground, we will provide refugees with essential items and services to help new arrivals to access the services and advice they need. “In Germany, we are providing refugees with coupons enabling them to choose items such as clothes, shoes and toys from our charity shops. In addition, refugees in Italy are receiving clothing, meals and translation services. “We continue to closely monitor the situation in numerous countries impacted by the crisis.” Speaking to The Asian Today, Birmingham Councillor Mariam Khan said she was ashamed of the Government’s response. “It was important for me to show my support for the Refugees Welcome vigil because as a human, I couldn't sit back knowing the situation that they are in. Birmingham's strength is its diversity and refugees are welcome here. Where we are born shouldn't determine the value of life and those displaced refugees are in urgent need of shelter and support. The UK Government should be ashamed of its stance on not doing enough to help and we should do our bit, like other European countries.”

Schoolgirls Ordered to Remove Turban Tackling Climate P School Change the Forced to Apologise Islamic Way After arents of two schoolgirls have spoken of their horror after a prestigious school forced them to remove their turbans. Prasimran Kaur, 11, and Simranjot Kaur, 13 had been attending the first day of school at St Anne’s Catholic School in Southampton, when they were told they did not have permission to be wearing the religious headwear. The school has now apologised with Headteacher, Lyn Bourne, saying the situation had been a misunderstanding. Both girls have returned to school, however, their families have said they are determined to change school rules. New Year 7 student, Prasimran Kaur was told she had to remove her turban, upon arrival. Whilst Simranjot Kaur was spotted wearing her turban at the school gates. When she refused to remove the religious headwear, staff began unravelling it. rasimran's sister Jaskiran, 18, a former pupil there said: "It's discriminatory. They were overwhelmed with us." “They are sitting in what can only be described as a jungle, running alongside them is a small, what seemed to be a muddy river in which they bathe in as well as drink and wash their clothes in. Seeing young children in these conditions was heartbreaking to say the least. irmingham based charity, Islamic Help joined Muslim leaders from across the world to launch the Islamic Climate Declaration calling for international action to combat climate change. Declaration was launched at the International Islamic Climate Change Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey, which was attended by representatives from more than 80 NGOs, governments and civil groups, along with religious leaders and academics The Declaration emphasises the duty of the world’s 1.6 million Muslims to protect the earth by following the teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith. It calls on countries to phase out fossil fuels and opt for alternative renewable energy. The Declaration, drafted by Muslim scholars around the world, also calls for a strong new deal to tackle climate change at UN talks in Paris in December 2015. Islamic Help’s representation at the conference included a display showcasing our ‘green’ initiatives including our pioneering Eco Village in Tanzania. The Eco Village, which will eventually support 160 orphans in specially designed homes, features an Eco Mosque and a permaculture farm and relies on sustainability and green energy. Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), said: “A clean energy, sustainable future for everyone ultimately rests on a fundamental shift in the understanding of how we value the environment and each other. "Islam’s teachings, which emphasize the duty of humans as stewards of the Earth and the teacher’s role as an appointed guide to correct behavior, provide guidance to take the right action on climate change.” An Islamic Help spokesman said: “We’re proud to be associated with the Islamic Climate Declaration which is a truly momentous occasion. As Muslims, we are duty-bound to follow the teachings of Islam and our ‘green’ Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) who placed so much importance on looking after the environment and protecting it from harm. "And as human beings, we have to act otherwise the legacy we leave for the generations to come is not one that they will thank us for."

36 MONTHS FOR RESTAURATEUR A Coventry restaurateur has been jailed for 32 months after killing a Coventry man in his own home. Kirithas Sriskantharajah, aged 34, of no fixed address, a Sri-Lankan national, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 48-year-old Arunasalam Arunothayan in March this year and was sentenced at Leamington Justice Centre.
Mr Arunothayan, also a Sri Lankan national, was taken to hospital after being found seriously injured at his home in Foleshill Road, Coventry on March 4. He died the following morning. A post mortem confirmed he died as a result of an assault after being punched to the head. Mr Arunothayan, also known as Arun, was virtually housebound after suffering serious leg injuries in a previous traffic collision. He lived with his wife in a flat above a shop on Foleshill Road.
His wife, Suthayini Arunothayan, said: "I am devastated by the death of my husband Arun. He was taken from me too soon by no fault of his own. My husband was everything to me and when I lost him, I lost everything." Detective Inspector Martin Slevin from Force CID, said: “The death of Arun (Arunasalam Arunothayn) at the hands of Kirithas Sriskantharajah was a needless and vicious act. The impact of his callous actions not only leaves behind a grieving widow, but has left a void in the lives of his family around the world.
Three men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The arrests follow an investigation into false and malicious information given to West Midlands Police on the 8th December 2014 which stated that an officer was going to be kidnapped as part of a terrorist plot. At a time when the national threat level was severe, the threat was considered credible and police acted swiftly to protect officers and police staff. A subsequent investigation revealed that the call was false and malicious. The three men are aged 25, 28 and 31 years old and all are from Birmingham. One (aged 28) is a serving police officer at Birmingham West & Central Local Policing Unit. He has also been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and misuse of police systems. The other two have also been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office. A 31-year-old man arrested on the day of the offence was eliminated from enquiries and has subsequently been deported by Border Officials. The three men are being questioned by detectives from West Midland Police’s Anti-Corruption Unit, with support from the Counter Terrorism Unit.

A
teenager has been killed whilst on holiday with his family in Pakistan. Asim Mahmood’s life was tragically cut short when we was involved in a motorcycle accident. His family now plan to set up a memorial fund for the 17-year-old so they could carry on the philanthropic work he started. Asim was due to start his second year at Stoke’s Newcastle College in September. Over 100 people gathered to remember the student, who was very popular among his peers. Organiser, Paige Williams had been a classmate of Asim’s. “I just couldn't believe it when I heard he was gone. He was such a lovely lad and had a heart of gold. This has really hit everyone hard. We're looking to organise more events to keep the memory of him going." A statement from his father was also read, describing Asim as a friend. “We as a family would like to say thank you to all of Asim's friends and teachers who organised this memorial in his name. As a family we have lost a great son, whose memories will never be forgotten. To me, he was not just a son, but also a friend." Teacher Sarah Grice
also paid tribute to Asim, describing him as a 'positive role model'. She said: "I was Asim's form tutor for five years, so it was just devastating when I heard the news. He was absolutely lovely. I watched him grow from being a quiet student to a fun-loving and hard-working student. He had a great sense of humour and I loved him being in my form and seeing him every day." Away from school, he actively took part with notfor-profit sports organisation, Engage Communities. Group founder and director Yaser Mir, aged 36, of Tunstall, said: "I have known Asim for many years because he was one of
the first youngsters to get involved in our activities in Tunstall Park. "He was a really talented footballer and we had been looking to sign him for our main team Engage FC. He was a good lad who was always happy and smiling. It was such a big shock when we heard the news of his death. Our thoughts are with his family." Staff at The Co-operative Academy of Stoke-on-Trent, Asim’s previous school, also paid tribute. “Principal Nick Lowry said: "We are all deeply shocked by this tragedy. Although Asim left the academy a year ago he remained part of our wider family. "I'll always remember him as a student who was constantly smiling; he always lit up the room. Asim had a bright future ahead of him and was really successful while he was here. "This accident has taken a young life too soon. Asim's friends have arranged a remembrance event outside the academy on Sunday and we will arrange our own remembrance service for staff and current students after we have consulted with the family."
Tell MAMA Expands Projects Appoints West Midlands Coordinator A
national anti-Muslim hate incident reporting project has expanded their work to the West Midlands because of major islamophobic incidents taking place in the region. Tell MAMA has appointed Nasar Iqbal to co-ordinate the work of the project in the West Midlands region. Tell MAMA has repeatedly shown a direct causal link between spikes in antiMuslim hate incident reporting into the national project after major events such as after the murder of drummer Lee Rigby, post the
Charlie Hebdo murders, after the release of the Rotherham grooming scandal report and after the beheadings of British Nationals by IS (Daesh) in 2014. Speaking on the extension of the work into the West Midlands region, the Director of Tell MAMA, Fiyaz Mughal OBE stated, “Given the concentrations of Muslim communities in the West Midlands and given the agitation of far right groups in some towns and cities, it is imperative that we provide support to communities and map, measure and monitor
such activity. Hatred has no space or part to play in our country and collectively, between the Government and civil society organisations, we are all committed to tackling it.” Speaking on the appointment, Nasar Iqbal, Regional Organiser for the West Midlands region for Tell MAMA said, “It is an honour to work on a project that empowers Muslim communities to report in antiMuslim hate incidents. I have always stood against injustice in my work and we must always remain vigilant against those who seek to divide communities.”

KILLED IN SELF DEFENCE
A Birmingham terrorist was killed in a drone attack carried out by the USA in Syria, the Prime Minister has said. Speaking to the House of Commons, David Cameron has said that 21-year-old Junaid Hussain had been planning attacks in the UK with Islamic State. Mr Cameron also the RAF killed fellow IS fighter Reyaad Khan, from Cardiff, in an earlier attack. Hussain had escaped to Syria two years ago while on police bail.
Mr Cameron told the Commons that police had stopped at least six attempts to attack Britain in the last 12 months and added the action against the British men was legally justifiable. He added: “If there is a direct threat to the British people and we are able to stop it by taking immediate action then as Prime Minister I will always be prepared to take that action and that’s the case whether the threat is emanating from Libya, Syria or from anywhere else.

A Birmingham man has been jailed for three years for causing serious injury to an elderly man by dangerous driving in Sutton Coldfield last November. Gurpreet Sandhu of Church Lane, Handsworth, had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, to the offence after he hit 91-year-old Horace Downes as he crossed Brassington Avenue to go and place a bet on the horses. The 27-year-old was driving his Honda Civic at speeds above 56mph in a 30mph limit and in heavy rainfall. Mr Downes, known to family and friends as John, was taken to hospital immediately after the collision with a head injury, where his condition was described as life threatening. Against the odds he started to recover and was released from hospital just over a month later to a rehabilitation centre. But tragically in February this year, Mr Downes died as a result of infection after being readmitted to hospital. A post mortem examination failed to find a link to the collision. Mr Downes’ family were present in court for the sentencing on Monday 7 September and his daughter Janet Turner read out their victim impact statement. She described Mr Downes as “the heart and soul of the family, loved by all who knew him and desperately missed”.

LEGAL COLUMN STOPPING YOUR SPOUSE FROM MOVING ASSETS With the temperatures forecast to plummet this week, I thought it appropriate to discuss the guidance given by Mostyn J on freezing orders.
@markhands
The Dilemma It is not infrequent for a client to inform you in the initial meeting that they suspect there Husband (sorry chaps, it usually is!) may dispose of assets. Downloading official copies of the register of property titles at HM Land Registry is often the starting point. Unavoidable questions arise from this step: Is he taking steps to shift the asset? What are his intentions? Is this the principle asset of the marriage? What is the extent of the other assets available? The client will be searching for advice as to how she can safeguard and preserve assets held by the Husband. Sometimes, in retaliation to the acrimony of the separation, there is a cynical and underlying reason to seek to freeze assets. A practitioner has to be alive to this. In addition the law in this area requires a matrimonial solicitor to often provide very robust advice. Aside from the Former Matrimonial Home the Land Registry provides little security as, to register a notice against a property (other than the FMH), requires a ‘pending land action’. In the context of financial remedy proceedings a ‘pending land action’ will be satisfied by the filing of a formal application to the Court (although the prayer in the divorce may suffice in certain circumstances). Nowadays parties are discouraged from launching into proceedings and are generally required to attend mediation beforehand. But will this be too late? The client wants to act now what does one do? If the asset is shifted who is going to pick up the tab? Any practitioner will tell you that such draconian steps as freezing assets should be exercised with extreme caution. The Law The law in this area is enshrined in s.37 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. On a simplistic level the act gives the court the power to restrain or set aside a disposition where it is satisfied the intention is to defeat the claims of the other party and that it would have the effect of defeating that party’s claims for financial relief. It is important, at a very early stage, to draw a distinction between an actual intention and whether the client is seeking an order as
• LEGAL - Mark Hands
a precautionary measure. It has been made clear by case law that the act should be reserved for the most serious conduct. It is sometimes tempting for a party to seek orders as they can usually be obtained relatively easily without notice to the other party. This practice was discussed by a leading judge who said in a recent case: "Freezing and search orders are almost invariably made ex parte and, as such, are a violation of the elementary rule of natural justice…The unilateral step taken at the beginning of case echoes down its history. Often the respondent is enraged by the step taken against him and looks to take counter-offensive measures. Every single subsequent step is coloured by that fateful first step. Costs tend to mount exponentially. And even after the lawyers close their files and render their final bills the personal relations of the spouses will likely remain forever soured. A nuclear winter often ensues” (emphasis added). The applicant must show, by reference to clear evidence, an unjustified dealing with assets (which would include threats) by the respondent giving rise to the conclusion that there is a solid risk of dissipation of assets to the applicant's prejudice. Where the application for a freezing order is made without notice to the other party the applicant has to show that the matter is one of exceptional urgency ‘Cases where no notice at all can be justified are very rare indeed…(emphasis added)’. Conclusion Ensure that freeze orders are properly obtained. Otherwise the costs consequences can be very severe indeed. If you are going through a separation and are concerned your spouse is taking steps to move assets beyond your reach please feel free to contact me on an urgent basis at mark. hands@irwinmitchell.com or 0121 203 5309.

new kickstarter campaign was started to raise funds to mass produce a statue of famous Sikh warrior Garja Singh from the famous Sikh historic event of 1739, has been funded in just five days. Taran Singh a 3D designer from Birmingham who has worked in the engineering and architectural industry for the last 12 years released a 3D sculpted likeness of how he envisioned Garja Singh. Using Sikh paintings and old artefacts he has carefully constructed a likeness of a 18th century Sikh warrior. The model was designed by Taran Singh on modern 3D software commonly used for architecture work and film special effects. The model will then be 3D printed so that a mould can be made and then cast multiple times in a bronze coloured resin and will stand at 30cm tall. The statue depicts Garja Singh with shield on back holding 2 swords and dressed in the
traditional simple dress of the time period. Taran Singh stated that he wanted to capture the strength and dignity of the old Shaheed (martyred) Singhs, who were renowned for their bravery and acts of valour and give them a place in people’s homes. He believes that it is important to engage with young people in new and innovative ways to help them connect with their culture and heritage. He sees the statue as a way of re-telling the story of Bota Singh and Garja Singh in a new and positive way. The kickstarter Campaign aimed to raise £11,500 which is the minimum required to mass produce the statues. it would cost too much to create stock and then sell the statues instead a crowd funding campaign was the ideal way to fund the project and also determine how much demand there is for this type of art without risk.

HEALTH COLUMN Sharon West, specialist bowel cancer screening practitioner at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, discusses men living with cancer. Blue September is all about raising awareness of cancers that affect men. The most common cancers that occur in men are bowel, lung and prostate. Did you know around 154,000 men living in the UK are diagnosed with cancer every year? Hearing the words ‘you have cancer’ can be hard to take but it is important to know that with early detection, your chances of beating the disease will increase. British Asian men are less likely to develop prostate cancer compared to black Caribbean and African men who are two/ three times more likely to have the condition. This is due to a mixture of inherited genes and environmental factors. Even so, prostate cancer can affect any male. If you suspect you might have cancer or have recently been diagnosed, support and advice is available to help you cope with the disease. Talk to your friends and family as they can be a powerful support system. Talking to others who are in the same situation as you can also be a good way to learn about your condition. Reading about the symptoms and treatments available to treat cancer will also help you gain a better understanding of the disease. The symptoms of different cancers vary, but below are some of the more common ones: • Unexplained weight loss; • Loss of appetite; • Persistent pain in any part of the body; • Coughing up blood; and • Unusual growths or lumps. You should see your local GP if you have any of the above symptoms. The sooner cancer is detected before symptoms occur; the better the chances are of recovering from the disease. Here are ways to help you minimise the risk of developing cancer:
• Diet – Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as whole grains can help reduce your risk of getting cancer. Avoid having a high sugar diet. For British Asians, eating jelabis and barfis too regularly can not only lead to having bowel cancer, it could also lead to the development of other types of cancer and heart disease. • Exercise – People who exercise for at least 150 minutes a week will have a lower risk of developing bowel and other cancers. • Healthy weight – Making changes to your diet and an increase in physical activities will help you keep your weight under control. • Smoking – Smoking can damage your heart and blood circulation. Giving up smoking will help reduce your risk of developing bowel and other cancers. If you are aged between 60 and 70, you will automatically be invited to take part in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme every two years. Also if you are over 70, you can request a screening kit by calling the free phone helpline on 0800 707 6060. Blue September takes place in September and is an international campaign aiming to raise awareness of male cancers.

Waseem Zaffar, MBE Honour recipient and proud Aston Villa fan.
WITH WASEEM ZAFFAR MBE How did you get in to politics? Was it always a career choice? No. Whilst at university, I was actually studying logistics. Growing up in Lozells, there was a lot of inequality and issues around social deprivation. There was just a lack of opportunities for young people. So, I set up a youth organisation and I quickly realised that to create a fair and equal society, politics is crucial to that. So I got involved with the Labour Party. I felt a necessity to get involved in decision-making, just to create a better life for people who live in Lozells and Handsworth. I was born in Lozells and lived my entire life in the area and today I represent it as a councillor.
In the spotlight is a small section of the paper which shines a light on community activities which are being put into practice across neighbourhoods. The aim of the segment is to raise awareness and promote these programmes or individuals for greater community cohesion. This issue we have Lozells and East Handswoth Councillor, Waseem Zaffar, MBE Honour recipient and proud Aston Villa fan.
TACKLING EXTREMISM
CONFERENCE More than 500 frontline police officers and staff across the UK − including a 22 strong team from the West Midlands region - are taking part to build local support for preventing extremism. The first ever National Prevent Awareness Week comes as a new survey shows high levels of confidence among young people to tell police their concerns about people being radicalised. Over the coming week, local policing teams will be working alongside Prevent Engagement Officers to explain how the public can play their part in keeping the UK safe from terrorism by being aware of signs of radicalisation and reporting concerns to police. Fifty five different events are taking place across the West Midlands region, starting with a Birmingham Prevent workshop for 16-24 year olds in conjunction with The Prince’s Trust. Regional head of Prevent for West Midlands CTU, Superintendent Sharon Goosen says, “We can only reduce the threat we face from terrorism and domestic extremism if we all play a part in preventing young people from being radicalised. This is why local communities and families have a vital role to play in helping to prevent tragedies on our doorstep. “It is reassuring to see that that people are putting their trust in the police and coming to us for advice and support, as

well as from their family network. “The headline findings from the national youth survey tell us that concentrating our effort on engaging with young people, women and families is the best approach to safeguarding our communities − which is why we are concentrating on these groups during Prevent week.”
Tell me about the community work you are involved in.
Sport has always been one of the passions I've had. I'm a huge Aston Villa fan, but I also love cricket. After playing the sport at school level, I went on to start coaching, which was my first ever experience of community work. I think it's important that when you have a busy life you should do things that matter to you, drive you and give you personal satisfaction. I am also involved in charitable causes which included helping charities such as Amirah Foundation. Charities that work with the most vulnerable in society are crucial to us. It's important that we give back to the community. My first passion is the community and I think I'm just a part of politics as a means to address some of those concerns. Sometimes I miss the real work in the community due to civil duty responsibilities, but making Lozells and Handsworth a better place to live and work is really important to me as an individual.
happening in this city yet we fail to sell that. So, we came up with this idea that we would tell the Birmingham story to the rest of the world. It's about promoting the story of Birmingham and its communities. It's about telling the story of inner city families and its diverse society. The report recommended a "Birmingham History Week". I took the recommendations with both hands. So, since last year, we have had volunteers from across the country come together to make this a reality. We have 100 events over a seven day period with the project being launched at the House of Commons. It really is a celebration of Birmingham's history.
My first passion is the community and I think I'm just a part of politics as a means to address some of those concerns. Sometimes I miss the real work in the community due to civil duty responsibilities, but making Lozells and Handsworth a better place to live and work is really important to me as an individual.
September marks the first ever Birmingham Heritage Week. I understand it was your idea?
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Back in the 2012, I was elected as the chair to the Social Cohesion and Community Safety Organisation Scrutiny Committee. I instigated a scrutiny inquiry in ‘What makes us Brummie?’ Without realising it - it became the ‘Brummie Inquiry’ and gained a lot of local and national media attention. We have such a diverse city, but historically, we haven't been the best in selling ourselves. There is so much positive
Celebrating Villa winning the Premier League and a year after that, winning European Champions League! I love doing what I'm doing. I represent the ward I live in, so face the same challenges everyone does. This city has given us so much and if I'm playing a small role in giving back then I would love to stay where I am.

Heskey's Support for Digital Autopsy F 20
SEPTEMBER 2015
ormer Birmingham City, Aston Villa and England international footballer Emile Heskey returned to the West Midlands, to pledge his support for the area’s groundbreaking Digital Autopsy facility – one of the first of its kind in the UK. Using revolutionary technology, Digital Autopsy opened in Sandwell in November 2014 and is one of the country’s first facilities to provide a way to establish cause of death via non-
invasive methods. Instead of a traditional post-mortem, where the body is cut with a scalpel, Digital Autopsy uses scans and digital technology to complete the post-mortem process. Having showed a keen interest in Digital Autopsy’s approach, Emile arrived at the company’s facility in Sandwell to learn more about the technology. A personal tour of the premises provided access to its state of the art scanning suite and viewing area, showcased the

groundbreaking software on which the Digital Autopsy service is built, and introduced its comfort rooms for families and guests. Whilst at the facility, Emile spoke at length about the benefits of Digital Autopsy for bereaved families. After discussing the impact that the service can offer by providing a compassionate method to establish cause of death, he was keen to acknowledge its potential - and pledged his wholehearted support for Digital Autopsy and the ‘Everybody campaign’. “I found the tour very interesting, it has opened my eyes into the world of Digital Autopsy. It is definitely the future,” said Emile. Digital Autopsy’s Global Vice President, Ash Govind, offered his thanks to the current Bolton Wanderers striker for supporting the cause. “Too many people in the UK are still unaware of Digital Autopsy and their post-mortem choices. We are striving to ensure that every bereaved family is given the support and information they need, so we’d like to thank Emile for his keen support. His backing will play a crucial role in helping us to spread the word throughout the West Midlands and beyond.”

Dr Mayank Shah, BAPS Charities, Sruti Dharma Dasa, President at Bhaktivedanta Manor, ISKCON UK, Sister Shivani, Brahma Kumaris and Mr Sudarshan Bhatia, National Council of Hindu Temples and are supporting Public Health England’s ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ breast cancer campaign aimed at women aged 70. Despite older women being at an increased risk of breast cancer, they are also more likely to delay going to their GP with breast cancer symptoms and for older Asian women there are often cultural, religious and language issues that can cause delay Mr Praful Thakrar, Event Organiser, Shreeji Dham Haveli, says: “We are very pleased to host the Be Clear on Cancer, breast cancer awareness
event at the Shreeji Dham Haveli and invite women over the age of 55 to attend. Understanding the symptoms of breast cancer and early diagnosis is extremely important especially amongst our elderly ladies who may think that they are past the age of developing breast cancer symptoms. The campaign sends out a positive message that breast cancer can be successfully treated if women with symptoms go to their GP straight away. Events like this are a great help in getting our community to discuss their health more openly.” Dr Mayank Shah, Trustee, BAPS Charities says, "Health promotion and awareness is a key focus of the activities of BAPS Charities and at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Temple, Neasden, we believe that maintaining physical health enables us to progress spiritually. “We know that South Asian and Hindu women may avoid visiting a doctor when they notice symptoms associated with breast cancer because they may be afraid or embarrassed. Doctors are professionally trained and have the specialist knowledge to treat the disease, and with recent advances, breast cancer can be completely cured. With this very positive message that doctors are available to help, we encourage all women aged 70 and over to go to their doctor if they experience any of the symptoms highlighted in this campaign, most importantly because if it is caught early, breast cancer can be successfully treated. Our ethos dovetails with the national campaign and we endorse this initiative wholeheartedly." Mr Sudarshan Bhatia, Trustee for the National Council of Hindu Temples says: “Breast cancer can be more treatable if found early and a woman’s Hindu beliefs should not be a barrier for her to seek treatment. Angela Shafiq, 22, from Hounslow has been sentenced to 15 months at the Old Bailey, London after being found guilty of encouraging Birmingham man Mohammed Nahim Ahmed to travel to Syria to join Islamist rebel forces. Mohammed Nahim Ahmed and Yusuf Sarwar (both aged 22-years-old) were arrested when they returned to the UK in January 2014 having been in Syria for eight months. The pair were later jailed for a combined total of 25 years and two months. As part of the investigation, detectives found conversations between Ahmed and Shafiq through online videos, instant messaging services and Skype. Detective Chief Superintendent Sue Southern is one of the UK’s most senior counter terrorism officers and head of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. Speaking about the case of Angela Shafiq she said: "As a unit we aim to prevent tragedies at home and abroad, this case demonstrates the on-going challenge of individuals forming online relationships with those inspired to travel and join terrorist groups in both Syria and Iraq. “Mothers and sisters are often the first to notice changes in the behaviour of their loved ones - be they sons, daughters, siblings or friends. What is Eid-ul-Adha?
The Muslim calendar holds two Eid festivals. The first, Eid al-Fitr, lasts several days and marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. The second, known as the Greater Eid or Eid al-Adha, commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God.

There is a common misconception among society that Eid is the celebration that marks Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. This isn’t the case. In fact they are two separate acts of observance. Hajj was made compulsory on Muslims during the 9th Hijri (Islamic year), a year before the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) passed away, whereas Eid-ul-Adha started as a celebration during 2nd Hijri, during the time of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
3
Eidi – Are you a giver or a taker?
A happy time for Muslims, it is also the time of giving. Eidi, by definition, means gift – and by modern standards, it means only accepting money. Receiving Eidi is the ultimate aspiration during Eid…but making sure it doesn’t land in your mother’s hands is the ultimate challenge. There are genuine feelings that rise to the surface inside you when the word ‘Eidi’ is mentioned. Getting the “you’re too old for Eidi” line is heartbreaking, whereas receiving Eidi from a kanjoos relative is one of the most memorable things in your life…a tale to tell for centuries.
4
Finding the perfect outfit – UFF
Is it too much to hold a dress rehearsal two days before Eid? After all, Eid only comes twice a year and it’s important to look immaculate on the occasion. And so begins the headache of finding an outfit that: 1. Is stylish 2. Isn’t the same as anyone else in your mahoosive khandaan 3. And doesn’t bare any resemblance to any outfit that you have worn on any other occasion Yeah….which is why you probably will need to start researching a couple of months in advance.
5
Selfies! Lots and lots of selfies!
Right! Now that you’ve selected your perfect outfit, it’s all about capturing the perfect moment. The sweat, tears and blood you have let out – all comes down to this moment. Capturing the outfit that is stylish, is different to that of everyone in your mahoosive khandaan and doesn’t bare any resemblance to any outfit that you have worn to any other occasion – is so important. But don’t be fooled – there are other people celebrating Eid, which means make sure you spare some time to take some selfies with them too! Oh, and here’s a tip: before you even harbour intentions of roaming around your neighbourhood taking photographs – please clear your phone for space.
6
Participate in a “Hugathon”
No Eid is complete without hugging every random person. Basically the list would include our uncles/ strangers (who would crush your bones) and the hug-
Eid-ul-Adha comes with a lot of food – however the meaning behind the occasion is actually sacrifice. The story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) being asked by God to sacrifice his younger son in the name of God is wellknown. After witnessing his devotion, God gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead of his son, Ismail. On the day, people attend mosque for prayers in either or their best clothes to thank God for the blessings they receive.
8 Qurbaani (Sacrifice) Qurbani means sacrifice. Every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world slaughter an animal – a goat, sheep, cow or camel – to reflect the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, for the sake of God. According to most Muslims qurbani is obligatory upon every sane male/ female that has wealth in excess to his/her needs. Normally those who are eligible to pay zakat have to give a qurbani. Muslim’s today sacrifice a sheep or a goat, the meat of which is shared among friends, family, and the poor, with each receiving a third. In the UK, people also sacrifice animals but are required to make arrangements to ensure it is slaughtered humanely.
Having lunch AND dinner with the 9 same people for a whole month As many of you know, even though Eid may, religiously, be for no more than two days, many of us end up celebrating for a whole week. What does this actually mean? It means sitting, eating and talking to the same amount of people for that whole week. And if you have a extremely uncreative family....you're also going to be eating the same sort of food for the whole week. Indian food. Might want to top up on mints.
10 Create memories Eid is a day to create new memories. Spend time with your parents. Family. Reminisce about the times gone whilst creating new memories. It's a time of tradition and when the younger generation find out the beauty of a week spent with their loved ones. Take selfies, spend your Eidi all at once and embrace the day, but above all create memories with the important people in your life.
Global Al-Imdaad Foundation offices have launched an Emergency Appeal for the Mediterranean refugee crisis. This is a difficult and catastrophic situation which has been unfolding across the Mediterranean, powered by ongoing conflict and instability in the Middle East and North Africa. The “heart-breaking” image of a drowned refugee boy who washed up on a beach in Turkey has ricocheted around the world on social media, along with equally agonising images of children lying suffocated in the backs of trucks crossing borders and being passed over barbed wire fences by distressed parents. In their search for safety, refugees are forced to make difficult decisions in an attempt to reach EU member states. With very few legal and safe routes overland, tens of thousands of refugees are embarking on dangerous sea journeys. Often making the trip toward Europe on flimsy and crowded vessels, they are risking and losing their lives in the attempt. In a statement, the CEO of the Al-Imdaad Foundation, Yacoob Vahed said that all decisions regarding the child migrant and refugee crisis in Europe should be guided by the best interests of the children involved, and that measures should be taken to ensure they receive satisfactory
health care, food, emotional support, education, shelter and protection. In an equally dangerous overland route, the number of “exhausted and desperate” women and children making their way from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq through the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and seeking refuge in Europe has tripled in the past three months according to the UN. UNICEF estimates that at least a quarter of the hundreds of thousands who have sought refuge in Europe are children, many of whom have fled the conflict in Syria. Some 2,500 people have died or gone missing this year while attempting the crossing to Europe. As the crisis grows and deepens, the Al-Imdaad Foundation continues to support refugees in countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey and is also helping vulnerable people in European countries. To view the LIVE updates please visit www.alimdaad. co.uk Working closely with the UN and with our partners on the ground, we will be providing the refugees with food, shelter, medication, clothing and most importantly protection. We continue to closely monitor the situation in numerous countries impacted by the crisis.
At a glance: • The worst refugee crisis since World War II, according to the UN • In August alone, UNHCR estimates that 80 ,000 people attempted to reach Greece by sea • Close to 300 000 refugees have entered Italy and Greece since January 2015 compared to just 45 000 for the whole year last year
• Four million Syrian refugees are living in countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey • Turkish authorities have rescued more than 40,000 people from the sea so far this year • Most of those trying to reach safety in Europe are fleeing brutal conflict in Syria • At least 2,500 people are so far thought to have died at sea so far this year.

chool leaders from across Wolverhampton are set to take part in unique development programmes commissioned by the City of Wolverhampton Council. The council's School Standards Service has teamed up with Edge Hill University in Liverpool and Inspire, the Wolverhampton Local Education Partnership, to offer five leadership and development programmes over the coming year. They will give school leaders the opportunity to work with inspirational education leaders from around the country, and develop their own skills for the benefit of their pupils. The programmes focus on various aspects of education, including preparing for Ofsted inspections, supporting existing and aspiring headteachers and developing the skills of governors. The programmes will be officially unveiled at a special
event for school leaders on Friday (11 September, 2015). Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We've done a lot to improve school standards in Wolverhampton over the last few years, and these bespoke leadership and development programmes will continue this excellent work. “They will provide a unique opportunity for school leaders
to work with some of the country’s most inspirational figures who are leading the way in cutting-edge thinking about educational management, and in turn will help senior staff continue drive forward improvements within their own schools. “As a result, we hope to see even better leadership in our schools, with a stronger network of headteachers and school leaders, improved schools with better Ofsted

Survey Finds Overall Quality of University
A
ston University students are the joint 15th most satisfied undergraduates out of 136 UK Universities and University Colleges, according to the government’s National Student Survey. Nine out of 10 Aston students praised the standard of their course, with the overall satisfaction level for undergraduate programmes at 90 per cent. It is the third year in a row
that Aston has achieved 89 per cent overall satisfaction or higher. The NSS survey 2015 is widely recognised as a key measure of student satisfaction and results for Aston’s individual subject areas are also strong. Translation Studies, BSC Biomedical Science, BSc Sociology, and the MOptom Optometry programmes all achieved overall satisfaction ratings of 100 per cent.
The NSS survey, compiled by Ipsos MORI gathers students’ opinions on the quality of their courses, with over 300,000 final-year students responding to the survey this year. The national UK average for student satisfaction was 86%. Areas rated in the NSS Survey include learning resources, quality of teaching and academic support and opportunities for student personal development.
Parents or guardians of pupils who are due to start secondary school for the first time in 2016 can now apply for a place for their child. The window for applications is now open and people should start thinking now about which secondary school they would prefer their child to attend. Families have until the end of October to submit their application and Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “If your child is starting their final year at primary or junior school this month, you now need to start considering which secondary school you’d prefer them to join in September 2016. “This is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child. The closing date for applications is the end of October, and ensuring your application is in before then deadline will increase the chance of your child securing a place at one of your preferred schools.”

Mandeep Dhillon on taking Anita & Me to Stage

3
Anita & Me is a very well known production. Have you read the book and what is your favourite part? No, I haven’t read the book, but I have watched the movie. My favourite part is when she is dancing in front of her family and she swears! That bit always sticks out for me so when it comes to theatre production we will have to be careful!
4

“I am honoured to be cast in a production directed by Matthew Warchus,” says Nikki Patel. “I hope that through this production we will raise the awareness of equality of education for women around the world.” The comedy drama, Future Conditional, will also star actor and comedian Rob Brydon and will run from 1 September to Saturday 3 October 2015.
The trailer for one of the most anticipated Bollywood movies has been released and it has safely exceeded all expectations. The movie, which stars Alia Bhatt, Shahid Kapoor and Pankaj Kapur. The movie begins with a big fat “Shaandaar” Indian wedding, which is actually a business merger between two of the biggest business families of India and is happening at an exotic castle in Europe. Mrs. Kamla Arora, the grandmother of the Arora family, the sole owner of the billion-dollar business and the property, has planned their wedding. Kamla
Arora, treats everyone like her servants including her three sons, Bipin (the eldest), Vipul and Vinay. Mr.Fandwani, the groom’s father is a loud Sindhi businessman who is the counter to Kamla Arora: The Fandwanis dress in gold, accessorise in gold and if possible they drink and eat gold. Based against the backdrop of the Shaandaar wedding is a love triangle between (our protagonists) Aliya and Jagjinder Joginder and Bipin (Aliya’s father). Bipin believes there’s no guy that will be good enough for his daughter while Aliya is a
dreamer but her dreams are whacked out and Jagjinder Joginder is a doer, he can make anything happen! …And for obvious reasons Bipin hates Jagjinder Joginder. The journey of Aliya, Jagjinder Joginder and Bipin in the chaotic and lavish wedding is the story of Shaandaar. It’s a fairy tale love story that everyone has always dreamt of…

Celebrity interviews are always a good laugh and it’s important to make sure that it’s a good conversation – both ways. The ultimate interview would have to be with Salman, Aamir or Shah Rukh Khan.
What is the aim – where would you like to take it? I would like to make The Surj Kumar Show a brand and hop onto mainstream TV with a studio audience! That is the ultimate dream. What has been your biggest highlight? There have been so many from interviewing Diljit Dosanjh to attending the BritAsia Awards nomination party. Can You Really Have It All?
E
xactly one year ago on the 31st August I married the love of my life. At the time of meeting him I was living in my little apartment in Nottingham working for a college as the creative digital media Apprenticeship programme leader. I was running my online mag Ikonz and working tirelessly on promoting my women’s campaign ‘Damini. Then like a bolt of lightning my life took a turn and I found myself being swept off my feet and organising a big fat Indian wedding….for myself! The once ‘career only’ independent female finally decided to share her life with someone else and what a huge change that has been. Just over a year ago my only concerns used to be about
myself, but now life is all about pleasing others. ‘Oh gosh why even bother getting married?’ you’re thinking! Well in all fairness it’s not that bad, especially when you have a good other half. What’s difficult is remembering not to forget yourself and your own needs. I literally picked my whole life and changed everything. I went from living alone to living in the extended family, I went from living in the small city of Wolverhampton to the hustle & bustle of London, I went from working in a small college in Nottingham to a huge company in centre of the capital, I went from a huge social circle of friends to now knowing anyone really and to be honest I think I adapted pretty
well, and that’s because when you get to certain age you become more resilient and accepting of the situations around you. The one thing I wasn’t prepared for in life is trying juggle everything. The first year has been consumed with me and my husband getting to know each other, because let’s be honest it doesn’t matter how much you love your partner, you don’t really know each other till you live together and it’s safe to say even through the ups and down we’re closer than ever. I have found it really difficult balancing my full time day job, looking after Ikonz, trying to campaign for ‘Damini’ when I can and be a good wife and daughter in law – all of which are very important to my life. However when a woman makes a decision
to get married it’s also a decision for herself and even independent women like me standing up and saying ‘it’s time for me to build my future now’. Being independent doesn’t mean you can’t do all the things you were doing before and have a busy career, it just mean the
order of priority changes and you will have to pick and choose what you can or can’t do because of time constraints and priorities. You don’t need to lose motivation, and most importantly you don’t need to lose yourself. So it’s up to us whether we want to make our marriage blissful or burdening!

Juggy Singh, you play the role of Kaptaan. I love the name! Your look suits your role. Was this for the movie only? This was for my character. The beard was created generally for the movie. It took time to mould it and groom it – just the way we wanted it to look.

Dr Zeus Producer Teams up with Jazzy B and Gippy Grewal for Etwaar
Tell me about your role. You’re playing an activist? It’s a different type of role. But yeah, I play a psychotic villain. I believe it is the first type of villain that audiences will love within the Punjabi industry.
SHOWBIZ SHOWBIZ SHOW
How did you find it?
What did you find most challenging about the role?
I’ve filmed two movies prior to this, one with Gippy and I honestly believe that those two prepared me for this one. I learnt a lot from those roles.
In terms of the experience, we all stayed together, so it was a very family atmosphere. The main thing was getting into character.
Music producer, Dr Zeus was recently in his hometown of Birmingham, promoting his latest single Etwaar. Featuring the vocals of Jazzy B and Fateh Doe, the song will be u sed in Gippy Grewal’s new movie, Faraar. He spoke to Surj Kumar of DesiXpress about singing, the movie and collaborating.
How did the track come about? I’ve been working closely with Gippy for a few years now, he is a dear friend who is like an older brother to me. He’s always sending me his vocals. He sent me Etwaar – which were in Jazzy’s vocals and told me there was a bit of an urgency to it because it was for the movie. Jazzy’s vocals are always inspiring because he adds his own character to it. The song is very meaningful and sends a message.
What do you think of the movie? Gippy has worked really hard on this movie. I’ve been with him whilst he has been rehearsing for the film. He’s also been working at the gym really hard. His acting skills are great. For him it was just a challenge to put himself in that kind of role. We definitely have something to look forward to.
S
inger-turned-actor, Gippy Grewal has released his latest movie, Faraar. A student, gangster, wanted criminal and a simpleton, these are some of shades Gippy grewal’s double role will portray in Faraar. The movie also stars Juggy Singh and Kainaat Arora. Talking to DesiXpress, Gippy and Juggy spoke proudly about the new release.
You currently have another number one hit with Sharmilla called Chamkila Kharku – how did that collaboration happen?
I have to ask first. Who am I sitting with - Shinder or Ikham? You're sitting with both of them (laughs). Faraar will be releasing on the 28th August and I play the role of two characters - Ekam and Shinda The movie is about a mistaken identity. Ekam goes from India to Los Angeles and is arrested after being mistaken for Shinda who is the most wanted criminal in the country. They have the same identity. He has to prove that he is innocent.
Which character was the most challenging to play? I would have to say Ekam. To portray a much more innocent side is a lot more sophisticated. Shinda's character was tough too. I had to build the body for Shinda. Getting a six pack. I had to get fake tattoos - when we were removing them I'd end up screaming! But when I saw Shinda’s pictures from the movie I was really impressed with the physical appearance.
Shooting in Los Angeles - how was the experience? It was great! I learnt a lot whilst shooting there because we went to such a high level industry. We saw first hand how movies were actually made. It was really expensive shooting a movie around the city – everywhere we decided to shoot, we had to get different permits. From filming in our own home to filming in ambulances – we had to make sure we were properly licensed. For a Punjabi movie, the budget for this film was really big.
The writer of the movie, Jas Grewal – is he related to you? (Laughs) No, he’s not related to me. We have worked together before, on Jatt James Bond. But we wanted to create a different type of movie. When Jas told me about the concept of the movie, I was really excited and we went through with it.

How are you feeling now that your first film is about to seen by audiences in the UK and worldwide? I am really excited but also nervous at the same time. There are a lot of butterflies in my stomach as the date is nearing closer and closer
The film is an official remake of Subhash Ghai's film of the same name and Salman Khan is producing it. How did come to you? I have always wanted to a be an actor since I was a child. I have always been a creative child as I loved theatre, dancing and performing on stage. I have always been inclined to this world. I decided to go to film school after I finished my 12th grade. I attended a course in film-making which included direction, acting, editing, casting and everything else related to it. I came back to Mumbai and it just happened that Salman Khan saw me at the gym. He spoke to my father and the next thing I knew was that I was on the sets of Hero.
Not many actors who come from film families have an education in film-making. Do you think you have an advantage over someone who hasn't learnt the craft formally? I don't think you have to go to film school to get that education and the understanding of the industry. A lot of star kids have been on sets and have worked as assistant directors. They have been there and learnt on the job. I can't say that I got an education just because I went to film school. I think you can get an education is many various ways instead of going to an institute. I did learn a lot but also about myself. I was living alone in New York and I became a lot more independent. I understood myself and learnt to be alone which is really important for an actor. My education was not just about films but also about understanding who I am as a person.
The industry has changed a lot and audiences have become unpredictable. Do you worry about what will happen if this film doesn't work out for you? Of course. I think for any newcomer the most important thing is acceptance. I am just waiting for 11th September to see if the film is accepted and whether the audience likes to see me on-screen. But I think that if I am accepted, that is great. But if I am not, I will work even harder. You have to be prepared for both, success and failures.
How different is the remake from Subhash Ghai's Hero? It is a very different film. While shooting the film, I never felt that we were making a remake. We have a very different and new take on the story. We are also a very different generation, hence the music is very different. Each song will give you a different feeling and emotion. The locations are also very different from the original as we shot in Romania and Manali. The characters are also extremely modern. The story and plot are essentially the same as you can't wonder off if you are remaking a film. I am sure the audience will see a different approach.

I have a friend, Harpreet Kaur who works within the business industry. He spoke to me and asked if I was interested in a UK tour. I asked him details of previous shows and so just like that the UK tour came about. We have had sold out shows, starting from London – where we had to turn people away because we didn’t have the capacity. Your father was a musician. Was that the obvious choice for you and was there any additional expectation? No. There was never any extra added pressure. My family background is very strong within the Sufi music genre. It’s the forth generation for myself. It wasn’t forced upon me. I was more interested in playing cricket actually. Could you venture into movies? (Laughs!) No, I don’t have any plans at the moment. A Butler Well Served
The chemistry between you and your son is the pinnacle of this movie. Yes. I'm glad you say that because that is not a universal reaction. But I think, certain people have seen that and I'm so glad that they have seen that because the so-called Asian immigrant movie. I don’t think that is what this is. We didn't want to make that kind of movie. You see the director, Mahesh Pailoor, - when his father moved to America - he and father had a difficult relationship. He tried to capture some of that, but it is more than that. It is a story about dissolute lives that have lost their spark. By the end of the movie, both father and son find the purpose of living again. How difficult was portraying your relationship between Sendhil Ramamurthy and yourself? The movie involves some athletic ability – something which I think I wasn’t capable of. You can see in the movie how much of a good tennis player he is. Some of the best scenes come I recorded were with Mary. She is such as versatile actress and it’s always a pleasure to work opposite such an experienced performer. I understand you, ironically, found a long lost friend during filming? I said to the director, I do not know anyone in Los Angeles but I wonder if you could find out if this person was still around. They didn’t tell me that they had found him and gave him a role in the movie. Which do you, the Bollywood industry or the Hollywood industry? It doesn’t matter. What matters is the script. For a director, actor and writer – it all starts with the script.

The good old cream and gold colour palette is classic for Asian garments. Why not try Gul Ahmed’s statement banarasi trousers with a midi chiffon kameez. Asian high street stores sell similar banarasi fabric and l’ve noticed some shops are starting to sell ready-made banarasi trousers too. And to give it extra dazzle add pleated flairs on one side of the reverse of the kameez.
Syeda Amera
It’s trending for another season, upcoming Pakistani designer, Syeda Amera showcased our favourite trend beautifully at Pakistan Fashion Week. The sequin beaded maxi fashion jacket is perfect for the elegant look for autumn and fall party wear. The main element of this party outfit is the sheer patterned topped with piping. For the Syeda Amera look just add a wider cut opening as the maxi jacket flows to the floor.
SHOREDITCH FASHION WEEKENDER Sulakshana Monga and Red Dot brought a taste of Indian high fashion to the UK's fashion capital. At Shoreditch Fashion Weekender, Soltee showcased her latest collection, Intrinsic Beauty. And no fashion outfit is complete without accessories. New-gen Asian accessory labels in the UK, Red Dot Jewels will be curating its Pink City collection at the fashion pop-up event. And all of that wasn't in vain as ten percent of sales generated at Shoreditch Fashion Weekender will be donated to the event’s official charity partner, Asian Circle.
Payal Singhal
The bold and baggy shalwar is back. It’s a cross between MC Hammer pants and sports jogging bottoms. Once you have the brocade MC Hammer pants, pair it with a contrasting long peplum style kameez. Just remember the colours of the kameez do not need to match yet compliment each other. And to give it that Asian touch, add borders just like Payal Singhal.

Make Up Cheats
I love love love make up cheats, tips and tricks. Let's face it, we may not all be blessed with the features that we wanted, be it the full lips or less than full hips. Where there are fabulous hold-it-all-in pants (or liposuction, I guess) where required for the ample body, the make up wand is phenomenal for giving us a sizeable nudge in the direction of enhanced features (believe me, I've mastered the art of creating mega cheekbones on a rather portly face - mine!). Here are three of my favourite make up tips which you can incorporate into your beauty routine: I adore THICK, LONG LASHES and have sported such heavy, double stacked fake ones that it feels like my own lashes are bench pressing! For understated definition, however, try tightlining. Applying waterproof eyeliner to your upper water line, as close as possible to and then just above the lashes, creates an illusion of luscious, thick lashes from the root. Teamed with a bodifying mascara, those peepers are keepers!!
1
I don't rate trout pout, but I love the BEE STUNG POUT! Unfortunately for me, I faint at the sight of my blood test needle so Botox is out of the question and therefore I call upon my trusted tools of the trade again! Apply a sparing amount of concealer (as similar as possible to your natural tone) around the lips and line the lips just outside the natural lip line and fill with lipstick. Some people swear by darker lip liner and lighter lipsticks but I prefer to match the liner as close as possible to the lipstick for a more natural effect. A touch of gloss to the lips enhances them further.
2
DEFINED Can't have CHEEKBONES or a chiselled looking nose? Oh yes you cantour! Contouring, highlighting, strobing, these plays on light are fantastic! Blending a graduated line a few shades darker than your skin tone just below your cheek and teaming it with a fab, shimmery highlight on the cheekbone lends immediate definition to your face. The concept can be applied to the rest of your face as well as other parts of the body. Clavicle or cleavage contouring, anyone?!

Yo-Yo Diets The media and magazines are regularly seen promoting the latest celebrity - faddy diets. Some of these diets are very popular, in particular with women. Often many of these ‘faddy’ ‘crash’ diets include bouts of starvation, missing nutrients, meals, or very low calories. Diets may help you successfully lose weight in the short term. However, most faddy diets can leave you feeling deprived or hungry and this makes it impossible to stick to them in the long term. When you come off these diets you regain the weight back and you may even gain more weight then you were before you started the diet. Research shows most people will regain almost all of what they lose, which is why the typical dieter tries a new plan almost four times a year. Some people struggle with this all their life and become serial dieters - often referred to as ‘yo-yo dieting’ - a continuing pattern of gaining and losing weight. This pattern of dieting can have many negative effects physically and it can also have negative psychological and behavioural consequences. The crash dieting cycle increases metabolic hormones such as insulin. These changes can affect your waistline - causing you to start putting weight on around your mid-section, which research has linked to insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Yo-yo dieting can affect you emotions, confidence and self-esteem. The
more times you go through the repeat gain-losegain pattern the more it can possibly affect your emotional wellbeing - and you become less convinced you can break free from the constant ups and downs. So, although you may achieve some fast results with dieting, sooner or later the body will adapt to the reduction of calories you are taking in - and metabolism begins to slow down. This is often when many people will start to struggle with the diet, and the weight begins to come back on. Because the metabolism is slower many people will find they end up with more weight gain then what they started with! If you are starving yourself the severe calorie restriction can cause loss of muscle tone (catabolism). This is not good news if you want to lose weight, because less muscle means a slower metabolism.
So how can you get yourself out of the ‘Yo-Yo dieting’ pattern? Rather than trying to go for quick diet fixes think about taking a long term sustainable approach. Change your mind-set and think of your diet as a healthy eating plan. Start making lifestyle changes, look at your activity levels and what and when and why you eat. Try to increase your physical activity levels gradually this will help to boost your metabolism. Most importantly do not miss meals or starve yourself such as; skipping breakfast. It can really affect you mentally and emotionally
to go through all that dieting, just to be back where you started. If you are really struggling and are stuck in a Yo-Yo dieting pattern then seek some professional help, i.e. from a dietician and/ or health fitness professional. Ditch diets forever and get happy, healthy, and body confident!

THE ASIAN TODAY The Great British Bake Off contestant Ali Imdad speaks to The Asian Today. WHAT GOT YOU INTO COOKING? I went to university and I wasn’t the table type of person, I really was a donner kebab kind of person. The house that we used whilst at university, the person that used to live there before, they left a cookbook behind.

DIVERSE DISHES TO BE SHOWCASED IN FIRST EVER CITY COOK BOOK
FOOD FOR THOUGHT • BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER: Individuals from different cultures and religions come together to celebrate Birmingham's diverse food heritage
THERE ARE TWO ASIAN CONTESTANTS ON THE SHOW – YOU WERE THE FIRST MALE. DID YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT FOR THAT REASON? I think the reason I was on there was because I was an Asian male. I think they were intrigued at the concept that I was an Asian male – that’s fine because I do represent a whole community. Once the programme started to air, the feedback I got was different. Firstly it was
negative – let's be honest, there are pockets of our community that are still backwards. But then, as the weeks went on, people started to come around – that’s when the positive comments came through. But overall, going on Bake Off has opened up so many opportunities.
I
HOW DID ARTISAN COME ABOUT? The people that owned the place – they contacted me and said, ‘We want to open up a dessert parlour and we would like you to get involved’. Initially, I wasn’t really interested
because there are so many already out there – but they ended up convincing me. It does work – every weekend we have a queue outside – so it’s going really well.
HOW WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO PURSUE THEIR BAKING DREAMS? I do try and encourage males to pursue their cooking dreams because I really want people to get into baking, not just as a hobby – but as a career choice. I hold workshops where people are trying to turn their hobby into a business and how they can do that. The baking industry is phenomenal with the margins of profit
being so high, you just have to make sure y o u play i t right.

t’s one of the most culturally mixed cities in the UK and now a new first-of-its-kind cook book is being whipped up to celebrate Birmingham’s diverse food heritage. The book will feature 20 mouth-watering recipes for Afro-Caribbean, Algerian, Afghani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, English, Gambian, Irish and Pakistani inspired dishes from people living in the city. Dishes will include Afghani dish ‘Chappali kebabs’, Gambian dish ‘Benachin Jollof rice’ and Irish favourites such as ‘Boxty’ (an Irish potato cake) and ‘champ’ (mashed potatoes and chopped scallions). The book is being cooked up by housing association and charity Bournville Village Trust as part of the Government-funded Near Neighbours project which aims to bring different communities closer together. Shabnam Mughal, Community Development Officer at Bournville Village Trust, said: “For the first time ever Birmingham will have its own cook book by people
from the different cultures, religions and ethnicities that make up our fantastic city. “Not only is it going to be packed full of delicious dishes but the process of developing the book and a shared love of cooking is bringing neighbours together to build new relationships and work together.” Tim Burton-Jones, Communication Officer at Near Neighbours, said: “Near Neighbours is all about bringing people together and building up new and positive friendships. “This group has developed a fantastic way to bring together their community and we are proud to be a part of this. ” The finished cook book will be launched at a special community event at Bournville Village Trust’s community centre Phoenix Hall in Bordesley Green in October. All proceeds from the sale of the book, which has been funded through the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Near Neighbours project, will go back into providing services at Hall.
TWO RESTAURANTS CLOSING A WEEK - SHORT- AGE OF CHEFS REACHES PEAK Figures have revealed that UK curry restaurants are being closed for business at a faster rate than ever before. According to Cobra Beer, over the last 25 years, there is evidence indicating that two curry restaurants per week are closing on average this year. While the UK’s taste for ethnic cuisine shows little sign of abating, curry restaurants have been found to be suffering from a shortage in staff that is
proving terminal. Leaders of industry bodies have noted that an ageing generation of highlyskilled chefs is retiring, never to be replaced. Not enough young people are entering the profession, and UK visa requirements are discriminating against chefs who do not reach the right salary bracket to qualify as skilled personnel. This is adding strain to a challenging industry with huge time pressures and
where it takes up to seven years to train chefs to industry standard. Pasha Khandaker, President of the Bangladeshi Caterers Association, said, “You need a group of people to run the restaurants, and if you don’t have new generations of people joining you need to bring people in from abroad. Slowly the staff shortage is affecting food, service, and affecting the business, hence we are seeing the level of closures we see now."

10 Million Passengers for Birmingham Airport L
atest figures reveal 10,004,119 arriving and departing passengers passed through the terminal between August 2014 and August 2015, for the first time in the airport’s 76 year history. This represents a 5.1% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The airport has achieved nine record-breaking months and four record days, on the way to breaking the 10 million passenger mark in the past 12 months. Birmingham is just one of seven airports in the UK, and three outside of London, to serve over 10 million passengers a year. Birmingham Airport’s chief executive, Paul Kehoe, said, “Reaching 10 million passengers within 12 months is a great achievement for everyone connected with the airport. It’s a real milestone which shows that our strategy of giving our passengers choice and great customer service is working. “We have celebrated many accomplishments this year to get to this point, including American Airlines launching daily flights to New York JFK, Hainan Airlines’ historic flights to Beijing and Emirates launching its third daily service to Dubai. We have also seen other airlines commence flights to key destinations such as Madrid and Reykjavik, as well as monthly and daily passenger records smashed on a regular basis. We’re now focussed on hitting 10 million passengers for the calendar year and will be working very hard to achieve that goal.”

WHS POCKETS £50 MILLION Retailer Fails to Process VAT WHSmith may have banked around £50m over the last five years by failing to hand over VAT discounts to passengers passing through its airport stores. The revelation comes as the retailer’s reputation hit a near two-year low and pressure mounts on the newsagent and other shops with airport branches to offer cheaper prices to customers flying outside the EU. The company updated the City on its performance for the first time since The Independent sparked a passenger backlash by revealing that airport retailers pocket the VAT on goods they sell to customers travelling outside the EU – who should not have to pay the sales tax. Analysts believe around 15 per cent of WH Smith’s annual sales come from its airport
stores, with half of that liable for VAT - meaning almost £25m of the sales tax will be collected by the company this year from its travel locations. Experts estimate that around 40 per cent of all passengers flying from UK airports are travelling outside the EU, meaning WHSmith could be pocketing around an extra £10m this year alone by not having to pass the cash on to HMRC. Over five years, the total windfall could be £50m. Sarah Murphy, YouGov BrandIndex UK director, said: “Of the retailers caught up in the scandal that we monitor, it is WHSmith that has suffered the bigger hit among the public. Its Buzz score – measuring whether people have heard good or bad news about the brand – has decreased significantly. Boots, meanwhile, has seen a smaller decline.”

oilets charging the public to relieve themselves have brought train stations millions of pounds in extra income. In at least one case more than half of that amount is retained in profit instead of going back into maintaining the toilets. That is despite National Rail, the train company running these stations, saying the charge is there to "prevent vandalism and maintain toilets". London Victoria saw a staggering £2.3 million coming in from customers needing
the loo, followed by Euston at £1.8 million and King's Cross on £1.4 million. Lower down the list was Edinburgh Waverley on about £750,000 and Liverpool Lime Street on about £400,000. The figures, which were reported in the Liverpool Echo, showed that in the case of Lime Street more than half the cash was kept for profit. Only about £10,000 went on toilet paper and soap and about £41,000 went on staffing the toilets, out of the £400,000 brought in.

Bake Me a Miracle! Couple Fine God’s Name on Egg
Shay and I celebrated our 10 year registry wedding anniversary recently and have been inundated with questions about how we have managed to stay happy for so long. The truth is we haven’t! It would be a lie to say that over the 10 years of our marriage we have always been smiling and happy. Throughout it all we have been together and with each high and each low our strength has been each other. Happiness is relative – some define it by the amount of money in the bank whereas others define it by their children and family. You as a person need to understand what makes you happy before you can make someone else happy and this is why Shay and I have a successful relationship. I understand that her needs of happiness and mine can at times be different and so we always work together to achieve each other happiness. No one s a i d sharing your life with someone would be easy but the key to a successful relationship is understanding and honesty. I feel happier being with Shay a lot of the time but I know she is a social butterfly who also likes to spend time with her friends and family. So we maintain a balance and give each other time to do what we want together or apart. If we were happy all of the time we wouldn’t value it whereas going through the ups and downs of life allows as a couple to reflect on what makes us happy together.

A
couple in Leicester have discovered an egg with the name of Allah embossed on it. Farid Jussab said he was amazed to find the discovery. "I can't sleep. I feel I have to let people know," he said. "I'm not the sort of man who prays five times a day and this is amazing. I'm going to keep the egg forever." Farid's wife Anisa, was the first one to notice the marks on the egg. He said: "My missus bought the eggs in Iceland last week because she wanted to bake a cake for me at the weekend. When she took the egg out she felt the marks with her hand and then looked and saw our god's name on it, as well as other writing all the way around. "I was sleeping and she came running upstairs to wake me. The sun was shining and I could see it perfectly. All the hairs on my arms stood up. We were both so shocked and surprised." Farid said he had spoken to a teacher at a local mosque who advised him to let the contents of the egg out to stop it becoming rotten. Farid said: "He said I must make a hole and get the egg out and then eat the egg with my wife. Then I shall put the shell in a glass container where anyone can come and see it." Anisa, 36, said: "It's a miracle and a blessing. It's not something anyone has carved on the egg. "These things appear and I've heard about this sort of thing in the roots of trees and in the sky. It is a sign and I think it's a message to all Muslims to forgive and to have a clean heart."
A decade with one person is a long time but I can honestly say it’s been the best decade of my life. Being with Sunny for all of my 20’s has allowed be to grow into the woman that I am and my experiences in our marriage have shaped me as a woman. Staying happy all of the time would be impossible but being with your best friend through the hectic things in life allow you to remain level headed. We have had some fantastic moments in our relationship but that doesn’t mean we haven’t had downs too. Being happy means that we are happy through it all together. If you have a time in your life where you need a friend wouldn’t be great for that friend to be your husband or wife? The one confidant you can trust? No matter what happens being which each other through it all is what counts and that to me defines true happiness.

No Guts, No Heart, No Glory Powerful Contemporary Theatre
• CAST: Sehrish Mahmood, Freyaa Ali, Mariam Rashid, Nayab Din, Saira Tabasum
The critically-acclaimed No Guts, No Heart, No Glory, which considers expectations placed on young Muslim women and devised in collaboration with former national boxing champion, 19-year-old Ambreen Sadiq, comes to The STUDIO at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 8 to 12 September. Performed in a boxing ring, No Guts, No Heart, No Glory is a powerful piece of theatre about young, Muslim, female boxers. With a live electronic sound score, epic visual design, cinematic lighting and the energy of a club, this immersive show explores being young, fearless and doing the unexpected. Winner of a Scotsman Fringe First Award 2014 and
a Special Commendation Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award 2013, plus a string of four star reviews, No Guts, No Heart, No Glorywas developed with the UK’s first Muslim female boxer, Ambreen Sadiq, who became National Champion at 16, on her second fight. The play also stars Saira Tabasum, former British University female boxing champion, as herself, to ensure that the show features some aweinspiring, authentic boxing. “No one really expects an Asian Muslim girl to walk out and get into the ring. My first fight was in Leeds; I was 15. I walked in and everyone was like, is that an Asian girl? I was trying to get into the ring and people were still saying, that’s an Asian girl! They were
checking their programmes” Ambreen Sadiq Director, Evie Manningsaid of No Guts, No Heart, No Glory: “We wanted to make something that would push the expectations of young Muslim women from both within the Muslim and nonMuslim communities. We started interviewing Muslim female boxers and were struck by their determination and passion for the sport, at how they had said ‘I will be who I want to be and do what I want to do’ and we thought this was a powerful message that spoke to all young women and young men. No Guts, No Heart, No Glory was an opportunity for us to make something positive and create an atmosphere of a club, with loud music and strong female characters.”

"SIKH TALIBAN" BC Asian Network presenter, Bobby Fricton, has issued an apology after making remarks against the Sikh community. In a statement given by the DJ, he said he apologised ‘unreservedly’ for using the term ‘Sikh Taliban’. Sikh organisations said they were offended after Friction tried to justify his remarks which have been branded as ‘irresponsible’ and ‘unacceptable’. His rant came after reports began to surface of how a group of men stormed a Sikh temple in a bid to stop an inter-faith marriage. The couple were then forced to cancel their wedding day. The Sikh Federation said: “BBC radio DJ and presenter Bobby Friction has offended Sikhs by using the term ‘Sikh Taliban’ on Twitter and failing to issue an
apology. Instead he has tried to justify his use of the term that he incredibly continues to describe as a ‘metaphor’. “There are no excuses for causing offence by using the term ‘Taliban’ that not only reminds Sikhs of sacrifices of the Sikh Gurus at the hands of the Mughal emperors, but also verbal abuse, racist attacks and killings of innocent turban wearing Sikhs in more recent times since 9/11.” In his apology letter and as a response to this, Bobby Friction said, “There have accusations on social media that I have called Sikhs “The Taliban” and that by comparing them to the Taliban I am essentially saying Sikhs commit the same offences against humanity that the Taliban are so famous for. further from the truth so let me explain what was actually said and meant on my personal nonBBC Facebook page. “I posted my thoughts on where a section of British Sikh political thought could end up at some point in the future. The metaphor was that we as British Sikhs were seeing the “beginning” of a group who felt they were allowed to police other Sikhs religious beliefs, with direct action if necessaryThe “Taliban” metaphor was to show the symbolic similarities in policing others, and was not a literal comparison and should not be seen as that. It was also not a comparison on anything the Taliban stands for religiously." Condemnation of Bobby Friction from the British Sikh community has been swift and widespread.
MURDERED: BAPU SURAT SINGH SON-IN-LAW - US POLICE IDENTIFY NO SUSPECTS
• VICTIM: Satwinder Singh Bola, 52
The Sikh community across the world have expressed their shock and sadness at the murder of Satwinder Singh Bhola, son-in-law of human rights activist Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, the 83-year-old Canadian Sikh who is on hunger-strike in
India, demanding for the release of political prisoners. Police in Illinois discovered Bhola, 52, stabbed to death in the parking lot of his apartment building. With a large amount of cash left undisturbed in his pocket, the motive for his murder does
not seem to be robbery. Gurjeet Singh, press secretary at the Sikh Federation (UK) said the motive is suspicious. “There is growing speculation across the global Sikh community that agents of the Indian authorities sanctioned the
murder. “Threats of this sort by the authorities were made public by Bapu Surat Singh hours earlier. He has been increasingly pressured to end his hunger strike.” Bapu Surat Singh responded to the tragic news
of his son-in-law's murder, saying: “Satwinder Singh Bhola was closer to me than my own son....but closer still are those Sikhs languishing in prisons, this incident will not affect my resolve or determination for the cause to free Sikh political prisoners.”

ensions have erupted in the Indian state of Gujarat after two days of casterelated violence has left eight people dead. Fresh clashes were reported between the Patel caste and the police, with the army being deployed to maintain peace. A curfew has been imposed, after members of the influential Patel community, demanding
quotas in government jobs, clashed with the police and local people. Clashes broke out when police briefly detained the protesters' firebrand leader Hardik Patel, who had hours earlier led a massive rally in Ahmedabad. Eight people, including a policeman and a father and son, have been killed in the violence and at least a dozen policemen
injured. About 40 police stations and 70 buses have been set ablaze. Hardik Patel, a leader of the movement, said that the protesters were nonviolent. “This is a battle for our rights and it will continue until our rights are granted,” he said. PM Narendra Modi has urged the people of his home state to maintain peace.

Sahdev Media stands amongst the leaders in the industry through committed leadership with pioneering trends, a focus on the customer, integrated processes and an unrelenting commitment to quality. Speaking to The Asian Today, she talks fitness regimes, public relations and how Sahdev Media is helping Asian women into media.
What’s an average day in your life like? Pretty much every morning starts with checking emails, social networks, media coverage of our artists and replying to as many emails or messages I can. Mainly I get my India calls and emails done super early with the time difference they are usually waiting for my responses! Some days start off with breakfast meetings some with skype calls. It all depends on clients you are in current PR with and where they are in the world.
08:00
I am on a total workout mission these days it’s the best way for me to have some time for me and keep sane! I train for one hour with or without my trainer depending on the days. I try and be really strict with my morning workout but if I am on a press tour or out of the city or country then it does vary! I usually grab some breakfast post workout.
10:00
When we have press tours going on everyone’s press schedules are complete which means speaking to media from across the globe booking up air time. It can vary a lot from going to a morning meeting or doing office work in the morning and heading out at night.
12:00
By midday I am usually out of the house usually travelling to a different city! My job has a lot of travelling local and international. I mainly split my time between London and Dubai.
16:00
Live radio interviews can last from 10 minutes to one hour and photoshoots can last up to all day! There are times when 2/3 artists will have interviews on the same day but in different parts of the world so coordinating and having a good memory (and a note in my phone) helps me manage several press schedules at once!
19:00
Home! Hometime varies a lot! Actually every day. There is no set time in PR. As years have gone on I have cut down on the late shoots. If I am cooking I am usually at the same time booking airtime and coverage with my Canadian media. Working to different time zones we have to have some flexibility and accommodating!
20:00
Me time! I like to watch some TV if and when I am home and yes I have a few Indian TV, which, I like to catch up on every time I am home. Or I record all the shows and fast forward watch them in super quick mode!
22:00
23:00
Logged on back to work, by now I usually have a tonne of emails sent to me current client questions, new music sent to me, business enquiries. I like to sit down and do the emails at night once my day is over and I can focus. I try and reply to each email within the 24 hour time frame! I do believe if someone’s taken the time out to write to you, you should always reply! I love to write press releases at night, I’m a night owl and I think this industry has made me like this! At night when there is no distractions, no phones going off, family, TV I enjoy writing and planning! I usually write for an hour or so.

Everyone used to say “you’ll be good at PR” so I thought I’d give it a try! 7 years on we are blessed to have represented clients around the world from Film, TV and Music. What does the future hold? Right now Sahdev Media is growing at a very fast pace, We are currently shifting to the film market working with Punjabi Cinema handling all overseas promotions covering UK, US, Canada. We are developing new outlets in the overseas markets. We will be putting on some exceptional concerts in 2016 and European tours with some phenomenal artists. We will be launching another strand of the company which will be announced next year, hopefully. We will continue to represent good artists and projects.
Chronic pain is sadly a widespread problem that affects around 8 million people in the UK. Chronic pain has lead to depression in 22% of cases, and approximately 25% of those diagnosed with it end up losing their job. The government spends around £3.8 billion a year on incapacity benefit payments to those diagnosed with this condition. Apart from medicine what else can help? Despite the growing evidence of the benefits of acupuncture for pain relief over the last 10 years, sceptics whether in the medical profession or not will continue to raise questions about this ancient system of medicine that originated in China over 4,000 years ago. Even though the efficacy of acupuncture is on the rise through scientific evidence some naysayers of this therapy will claim that the treatments are just placebos. However if you keep an open mind and see the growing evidence base you will come across good news that acupuncture can help many conditions such as chronic pain, pain in the lower back, neck and knees all of which can be debilitating to a normal life. NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has recommended the use of acupuncture for back pain since 2012. Acupuncture has also been proven to reduce bouts of tension headaches and migraines. The results of the research that supports the efficacy of acupuncture in relieving chronic pain was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Textiles by St Anne’s, a social enterprise within Birmingham-based mental health charity BITA Pathways, has teamed up with UVProtectA to design and manufacture an innovative new product aimed at reducing the risk of skin cancer for construction workers.
The move follows figures released by
making UV one of the top health risks on a construction site. Trade Union UCATT states that “construction workers are exposed to the sun on a daily basis. It is vital that measures are put in place to ensure they do not suffer skin damage which could cause skin cancer later in life.” Textiles by St Anne’s began manufacturing the simple but innovative design in 2014. The ‘neck shield’ is worn under the hat rim, with a built in sweatband and is convenient to ‘wash & wear’ every day. The aerated material is designed to allow ventilation, keeping the worker cool on hot days. While it is not yet regulatory, the provision of a sweatband and neck protector is ‘recommended’ by the Government’s Health & Safety Executive (HSE). Heather Bryant, HSE’s chief inspector said: “We recognise the construction sector’s progress in reducing the number of people killed and injured by its activities, but it is clear that there is still an unacceptable toll of ill-fated and fatal disease in the industry”. Pat Bend, business development manager at BITA Pathways, commented: “Contractors purchasing this great product will not only be making huge strides towards protecting their workers from skin disease, but, given the product is manufactured by our charity, they will also be able to clearly demonstrate their Corporate Social Responsibility. This would be a huge benefit to them in many

New Enterprise Hub Will Support Asian Women A part of the Southside Business Centre in Ladypool Road, Sparkbrook, has been transformed into a selfcontained Women’s Enterprise Hub. This is the second in a series planned for Birmingham and will offer space for rent as well as business support. The aim of the Hub is to give women the confidence and skills they need to either start their own business or grow an existing business to reach its full potential. There is a particular emphasis on encouraging Asian women to engage in enterprise. The first Women’s Enterprise Hub opened at South & City College’s
Fusion Centre, Digbeth, in 2013 and focuses on enabling young women to start careers in high end Asian Fashion through a range of courses. This Hub will be slightly different, as Sarah Crawley, the woman behind it explains: “Our offer will be based around enabling women to work on their businesses in a creative and supportive environment in which they can access professional business support, network and benefit from peer mentoring. We are aiming to demonstrate through this Hub just what women, given appropriate support, can achieve.” Sarah has been running iSE, a Birmingham-based

SCHEME BRINGS IN 600 NEW JOBS A grant scheme that helps businesses across the West Midlands invest in innovative new products has been hailed a success by an independent evaluation. Successfully managed by Birmingham City Council,
the Business Innovation Programme (BIP) is an £8.7m programme of business support, part funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). It is expected to create
and safeguard over 600 jobs, significantly over its target of 350. And now an independent evaluation has said the scheme makes an important contribution to the growth of the regional economy,
with evidence that it has helped unlock investment more quickly and on a larger scale than would otherwise have happened. Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, transport and the economy, said: “It is encouraging to see independent confirmation of the benefits of this programme

BPS Birmingham Apprentice Graduate Wins Scheme Place Now in its tenth successive year, BPS Birmingham Future’s Graduate Apprentice is a unique 12 month scheme that sees three employers from the city’s business professional and financial services sector take on a talented graduate, offering them valuable experience and a salaried placement. The 2015/16 Graduate Apprentice, Khumehra Mohammed, is a recent Law graduate from the University of Birmingham, who achieved a 2.1 in her degree. Khumehra will begin her year as Graduate Apprentice in September with IDEX Consulting, an innovative and independent r e c r u i t m e n t consultancy for the Financial Services, Insurance, Legal and Accountancy & Finance sectors. The company prides

itself on advising talented individuals looking to secure their next career move, and assists businesses with their attraction and development of talent. After four months with IDEX, Khumehra will move on to work with DBK Ltd in January 2016. DBK was part of the 2014/15 scheme and has signed up for a second year running. Lisa Meredith, Head of Resourcing at DBK Ltd, commented: "As a leading UK based employer with our head office in Birmingham, we are passionate about attracting talent to the West Midlands and investing in the future. This scheme has not only done a fantastic job of raising the profile of Birmingham within the graduate population, but also provided us the opportunity to work with professionals from a non-vocational background."
Al Rayan Bank has become accredited as a ‘Living Wage Employer’ and thereby joins companies in the UK that voluntarily opt to pay their employees a ‘Living Wage’. Fixed at £9.15 an hour in London and £7.85 an hour outside London, the Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living. It is significantly higher than the current minimum wage (£6.50 an hour), and also more generous than the new compulsory ‘National Living Wage’ announced in the recent Budget and due to be introduced in 2016 (£7.20 an hour for those 25 and over). The ‘Living Wage Employer’ accreditation is the latest evidence of Al Rayan Bank’s ethical approach to business. The Bank has already been recognised as an ethical alternative to conventional banks by the Move Your Money campaign, and Ethical Consumer magazine rated Al Rayan Bank in the top ten ethical current account providers. Sultan Choudhury, CEO, Al Rayan Bank, said, “I am delighted that Al Rayan Bank has been formally recognised as a Living Wage Employer. As an ethical, Sharia compliant bank, we believe in trade, entrepreneurship and commerce. It is our belief that an essential element of this approach is the fair remuneration of all employees.” The Islamic banking
system is an inherently ethical system which is concerned with the wider effects of its actions on society. An internal ethics (Sharia compliance) department monitors the products that Al Rayan Bank sells as well as how it conducts its business on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that everything the Bank does is in line with the values of Islam. In addition, an external and independent ethics committee (known as the Sharia Supervisory Committee) oversees all of the Bank’s activities. Al Rayan Bank has been a pioneer of British retail Islamic banking for over 10 years, and is dedicated to strong, faith-based ethics and great customer service. The first wholly Sharia compliant retail bank in the UK, it currently has over 60,000 retail, business and premier customers and has earned a reputation for providing innovative products which appeal to people of all faiths and none. This approach has helped it to achieve global recognition for its outstanding success and maintain a long lasting reign over the best buy savings tables in the UK. As an independent UK bank, Al Rayan Bank is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority and is a member of Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
URBANISING HS2
Businesses Put Case in for Modern City Rapid urbanisation will mean HS2 is essential for Birmingham if it is to stay competitive suggests a new report from JLL, identifying the 'Big Eight' megatrends which will impact on UK real estate in the next 15 years. As 82% of the population
heads for the cities by 2030, urbanisation will put a huge pressures on infrastructure and high-speed, low carbon railways such as HS2 will be essential. Birmingham's population is set to grow 202,700 by 2030 based on 2010 projections. "Infrastructure and quality housing will be
that we have been able to deliver to Birmingham and the wider region. “This is all about helping businesses to help themselves. All levels of government – local, national and European – have a crucial role to play in creating the right environment for businesses in Birmingham and the West Midlands to flourish by helping them to invest and grow. “We hope to secure further funding for business innovation as this programme has shown just what we can do.” The report also said the success of the project has been supported by strong
BUSINESS
project management and good engagement with partners across the region. BIP has built on the council’s previous experience of delivering business support interventions which has ensured effective administrative processes and systems have been put in place. The application and appraisal process has been ‘fit for purpose’ and represents a model of good practice. Not only does it provide much needed investment into local businesses with growth potential, but it provides a solid offer to help engage businesses in wider business support provision, the report adds.
Renting a room out in your main house RAZA ULLAH SAMAR BA (HONS) MBA FCA w: www.rusand.co.uk e: rus@rusand.co.uk Homeowners who rent out a room to tourists and lodgers have been given a tax incentive. The Government increased the amount a property owner can earn tax-free in rent to £7,500 a year. It is a victory for the soaring number of homeowners renting spare rooms to holidaymakers and business travellers etc and it will also benefit those who try to boost their household income by renting out an empty bedroom to lodgers. The rent-a-room tax relief scheme currently allows homeowners who let extra bedrooms in their main residence to lodgers to earn up to £4,250 a year tax-free. From April 2016 they will now be able to earn £7,500 in rent before paying tax on those earnings. The extra allowance is worth £1,300 a year to a higher
rate taxpayer, and £650 a year to the basic rate taxpayer. This relief is to encourage people to rent rooms in their main residence and to provide a hot meal. The government has assessed that there are more than 19 million empty bedrooms in this country and considers this a waste of resources. To qualify for the renta-room scheme it must be the homeowner’s main property, and the amount someone can earn a week in rent is capped at £144 a week. There are an estimated 19 million empty bedrooms in England, according to Spareroom. co.uk Many properties belong to pensioners who don't want to move to a smaller property, and empty nesters whose older children have now left home.

Demand in Housing Reaches 11-year High
Gross mortgage lending in the UK reached £22 billion in July, some 9% higher than June when it was £20.1 billion, according to the latest data to be published. The figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders, which represents over 90% of home lenders, also shows that it was 14% higher than July last year. Mohammad Jamei, CML economist, explained that although it is the highest monthly total for seven years, it is in line with the CML’s expectation that lending would strengthen in the second half following subdued activity earlier in the year.

ousing demand in the UK continues to growth, reaching an eleven year high in August, according to the latest monthly report from the National Association of Estate Agents. The number of house hunters registered per branch continued to grow this month, up 5%, to an average of 462 per branch compared to 439 in July. This is the highest recorded since August 2004, when an average 582 house hunters were recorded per NAEA branch. Available housing also increased in July, jumping
25% from an average of 44 properties available per NAEA member branch in June, to 55 in July. These levels have not been seen in almost two years, when 57 houses on average per branch were recorded in September 2013. However, the number of sales made in July remained static from May and June, with just nine per branch, indicating that although housing stock is starting to increase, it remains a struggle to complete a purchase. The July Housing Market Report also reveals that the number of sales made to first time buyers continued
to fall in July, with the group now accounting for just 23% sales. This has fallen from 24% in June and 29% in May. However, it is an increase on last year, when only 20% of

Nabi’s Dynamo Young Albion Star Joins ISL Club on Loan
A
dil Nabi is off for the adventure – and opportunity - of a lifetime after agreeing to join Delhi Dynamos for the looming Indian Super League season. The 21-year-old Albion striker has signed a threemonth loan to take part in the second season of ISL action which will see Nabi playing against some of football’s biggest names in front of huge crowds. The Dynamos will be coached this year by the Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos and have also recruited former internationals and Premier League stars John Arne Riise and Florent Malouda. It adds another “first” to Albion’s long history of cultural breakthroughs as Nabi will become the first footballer contracted to a Premier League club to take up a loan to the ISL. And it all added up to an opportunity too good to miss for Nabi - who joined the Baggies as an eightyear-old - as he explained before joining Delhi’s preseason tour of Sweden next week. “I didn’t really have to think about it for too long,”
DREAM he says. “The idea appealed to me the moment it was proposed. I spoke to my parents and to people at the club and everyone thought it was an exciting idea. “I can’t wait. It is going to be an amazing experience. Some of the players who are now going to India are the biggest names in world football and working under a legend like Roberto Carlos is a chance not to be missed. “I have spoken to the gaffer (Tony Pulis) and he agrees that it can be a great development opportunity for me. To go out, away from all my home comforts, and experience life and different football. “I will be back at the end of the year when I hope I will have learned as a person and a footballer. My ambition is to still break into the Albion first team and this experience can help me do that.” Head Coach Tony Pulis said: “It’s a great opportunity for Adil and we will follow his progress closely. “I’m a big supporter of a young man stepping out of his comfort zone and experiencing another part of the world. “I think he will come out of it a better, more mature
person and as a result a better footballer.” The ISL has established itself as one of the emerging “boom” leagues of world football and Nabi can expect to ply his trade in some huge stadia watched by attendances in excess of 60,000 at times. In its debut season, the ISL drew an average of 26,505 attendances – a figure topped only by Germany’s

Bundesliga, Spain’s La Liga and the Premier League. The move strengthens Albion’s growing ties with Indian football which began with a series of grassroots initiatives two years ago and most recently saw the Club host an acclaimed reception on behalf of the Premier League for India’s top ISL top executives. Adil will make his ISL debut on October 4 when Delhi open their campaign in Goa. The season runs until December 20.

TOP MARKS FOR GRADUATE! Footballer Becomes First Indian to Play in PL An Indian woman footballer has become the first player to debut in the English Premier League after being acquired by West Ham United. Aditi Chauhan, who plays in the position of goalkeeper, debuted against Coventry City. The goalkeeper emerged as an outstanding player when her country managed to retain the SAFF Women’s Championship after defeating Nepal 3-1 in the final. Chauhan
put up an impressive display that saw her concede only one goal in the tournament that came at Sri Lanka. She said “I always enjoyed sports. I used to play basketball, do athletics and karate as well. I have a black belt in karate. I used to play football with my friends in the park. My coach asked me if I would be interested in the keeping role and I said ‘yes’ and gave a few trials.” Reminising about her
journey, she said, “I used to play for club back in India, and when I was representing India, I picked up a knee injury in 2013. It was my trainer Jagdev Chauhan from Om fitness academy who helped me recover from the injury. He worked on strengthening my knee ligament and since the past four years, I have been training under his guidance. He is not just my trainer, but he has been my mentor as well.”
Academy graduate Aadil Ali (80) hit his maiden half-century in first-class cricket to help Leicestershire record four batting points after posting an impressive 415 in their first innings against Gloucestershire at Grace Road. It was very much a team batting performance though as six partnerships posted over 50 to show the strength across the whole order. Notably Ben Raine (51), Wayne White (38), and Clint McKay (29) made decent contributions in alliances with Ali.
In response Gloucestershire survived the final 6.5 overs of the day to finish 22-0 with bad light forcing the players off early. Ali said: “I’d got close a few times, including two 40s against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham, so I was pleased to tick that off, especially at home in front of a decent crowd.” “Earlier in the year we were struggling a bit with the bat, but we’ve worked very hard to put it right and I think the way just about everybody made a contribution shows. Six partnerships of over 50 tells the story.” Leicestershire made a positive start in the morning with Dan Redfern playing some attacking shots and scoring fluently.

Ali the Ashes
HERO "If there was training every day it would be the best. If it was games every day it would be the best. I love it."
A
shes-winner Moeen Ali has spoken of his pride at playing cricket for England. The 28-yearold has become a vital part of England's squad in all formats since making his international debut during the tour of the West Indies early last year. And the Worcestershire all-rounder, who played a vital role in England regaining the Investec Ashes this summer, is loving every minute on the world stage. “There is nothing better than playing for your country,” Moeen, named in England's squad for the limitedovers matches against Australia, said. “You put the cap on, everyone shakes your hand, all that kind of stuff you never forget. Me and Chris Jordan made our debut on the same day and I remember fielding, he was at cover and I was at point, and we couldn't believe we were playing Test cricket. “I always felt that if I was going to play for England that I wanted to make some sort of difference. "I don't feel the pressure. I don't feel anything like that. I feel
if I behave myself, as I should, I have a routine in my prayers, and then it honestly comes from the heart. It is something I generally want to do and I love doing it." Moeen, an elegant lefthanded batsman and offspinner, is cricket mad. “I don't like having too much of a break,” he added. “I probably have two weeks max without picking a bat up, but even in those two weeks I would probably do a bit of shadow batting, or anything, in my room at home in the mirror. “If there was training every day it would be the best. If it was games every day it would be the best. I love it. “I sent a tweet out with a picture of the boys celebrating at the Oval, saying it had been my best-ever day in cricket. We had lost the game, which obviously hadn’t been the plan. But what a feeling, knowing that we’d won the Ashes. “It’s been a long journey, for me from starting playing cricket in Birmingham, and for us as a team from the start of this summer when we got together for the first time before the New Zealand Test at Lord’s.”

Nico’s Commitment Team India Continues with Hulkenberg F1 team, Sahara Force India, has announced the signing of a two-year contract extension with Nico Hulkenberg. It means Nico will race in the team’s colours until at least the end of the 2017 season, giving the team valuable stability in the years ahead. On the news, Nico Hulkenberg said, “I’m very pleased to finalise and announce my plans for the future. I know this team inside out and I feel at home here so it made perfect sense to make a long-term commitment. The progress the team has shown
over the last two years has really impressed me and gives me confidence for the future. It’s a great group of people who are hungry for success and want to keep improving year-on-year. I think we have the important things in place going forward and I want to continue growing with this team as we move even further up the grid.” Dr Vijay Mallya, Team Principal and Managing Director, “I make no secret of being one of Nico’s biggest fans and so it’s fantastic to confirm him as our driver for the next couple of seasons. He
has spent almost four years with us already and in that time we’ve seen him develop into one of the best racing drivers in the world. Nico has the speed, the technical
knowledge and the maturity to help us achieve some great results in the years ahead. We will do everything we can to continue delivering a car to match his talent.”
