The UK has already welcomed over 100 Syrians from refugee camps, with tens of thousands more expected in the next few years. 20,000 refugees are expected to join the current number who have settled in British cities including Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Hull as part of the government’s resettlement programme. The majority of people are set to arrive over the next three years, with councils in the Yorkshire and Humber region, where all 21 local councils have accepted to receive refugees, set to take 1,500 refugees. The government has sad it will help local authorities in meeting the costs of housing and supporting the refugees, though it remains up to the individual authority as to how many refugees they will accept, taking into consideration factors such as housing, school availability and public support. Imad and his family, who fled Syria after bombing left one of his three young children injured, has said they were happy to be safe and have been well received in the UK. He said his children have been admitted attendance at a local school,
where they received a warm welcome. The war in his home country forced him to uproot, migrating to Lebanon with his family. However, he saw no foreseeable future there, where his family spent four years of living in tents. He said, “There was no work, no education and no services.” Migration Yorkshire is the group tasked by the Home Office to decide which local authorities in the region accept refugees. Head of the group, Dave Brown, said the resettlement programme had gone well so far. "I was at the airport last week when people came in and you can't help wonder what's going through their minds after they've been through so much," he said. "The overwhelming memory for me is they're just normal people. They're coming through thinking what they want for their family, how they're going to get on with their lives. "They don't want to talk politics... they just want to be in a safe place to bring up their children and be normal like the rest of us."
Cadvent Treats from Cadburys C
adbury gave the Christmas scene a tasty chocolate makeover this year when the first of 24 trucks rolled out from the factory in Bournville, marking the start of a delicious Christmas countdown. The chocolate company sent out 24 trucks in 24 days all over the UK, with each one appearing at a new location every day, from the start of December until Christmas Eve. The first truck, containing a Christmas grotto made entirely from chocolate, pulled up in Liverpool on December 1. On board was a Wispa-made Santa’s table and chair, plenty of advent calendars and presents and topping up the tasty treats were edible baubles. Inspired by the advent
calendar countdown, each of the 24 trucks counting down to Christmas represents a different door of an advent calendar, behind each of which will be a unique surprise. Birmingham’s Christmas truck, promising a delightful twist on the traditional Christmas choir experience, will be at Cadbury World on Wednesday December 16. Visitors at the chocolate factory during a scheduled twohour period between 1pm and 3pm will be invited onto the stage set up within the truck to be serenaded with festive songs. The traditional tunes will feature a modern twist with personalised beatboxing. The truck will of course, as expected of a Cadbury truck, will be laden with lots of chocolate.
“What better way to celebrate Christmas than having an advent truck deliver Christmas carols at the home of Cadbury?"

Manawer, whose acceptance speech earned him a standing ovation from the crowd, also spoke on behalf of "two billion sane Muslims on the planet", saying he stood in support of the war on terror. "My name is Hussain and I am not a terrorist," he said. “I’ll be the first ever British Muslim, youngest European and the first Pakistani person ever into space and it means a lot more than the experience alone.” The 24-year-old from Essex achievements already include travelling to Botswana to help build a school at the age of 18 and being among the elite few who became Olympic torchbearers for the London 2012 Olympics. At present, as well as interviewing a host of influential public figures on his online channel ‘Hussain’s House’, the talented poet takes time out of his schedule to visit schools across the country, speaking to young people about issues such as cyber bullying and the importance of self expression through the arts. £3K Confiscated Jailed Coventry Limo Business Boss Ordered To Pay Thousands
Forget the Coca Cola Truck – The Cadbury Truck is Coming to Brum
The jailed owner of a wellestablished limousine business in Coventry has been ordered to pay over £3,000 or risk extending his prison term. Mohammed Khan, currently imprisoned for dealing drugs to support his own addiction, has been given 28 days by Judge Andrew Lockhard QC to pay the £3,410, cash which is to be confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act The 26-year-old, of Beresford Avenue, Foleshill, Coventry, who was jailed after pleading guilty to the charge of possessing cocaine with intent to supply it, risks facing an additional four months in jail, on top of his current jail term of two years and eight months, should he fail to pay the money. Khan was arrested in June last year, following a tip-off to the police at 10pm that drugs were being dealt from a parked car at Foleshill Enterprise Park. Khan’s Honda Civic was stopped 20 minutes later by police officers, who informed him that
he was to be searched for drugs. Despite claiming that he didn’t possess any drugs, when one of the officers reached out for him, Khan leapt out of the car and attempted to escape, discarding numerous small packages as he ran. Officers pursued him on foot and, when apprehended, Khan was found to possess £100 in £20 notes. Six £40 deals of cocaine were also recovered from the ground by officers. Police uncovered an additional 7.1 grams of cocaine worth £560 during a search of Khan’s home following his arrest, as well as a set of digital scales, a number of small plastic bags and more cash. Khan, who disclosed being a heavy cocaine user, claimed that the cocaine discovered in his home was for his personal use. Despite admitting to selling drugs to his friends, Khan denied any commercial drug dealing and he maintained that some of the cash seized had been from his work and not from dealing.

Al-imdaad Fighting Floods Awais Khan, 26, has been sentenced to seven years and four months in prison after raping a student in her home. The Perry Barr local has also been ordered to sign on the sex offenders register for life. Awais Khan was said to have befriended a woman at railway station before sneaking into her back garden and raping her a week later. The young woman was targeted as she caught the last train home from Witton on July 2, He offered to help carry the victim’s shopping bags at the railway station and accompanied the 20-year-old on the journey to Perry Barr before walking her to her home. The student soon became intimidated by his behaviour so she gave him her phone number in hopes that he would leave. A week after they met, Khan is said to have climbed over the fence to the back garden of her home. He then went inside, confronted the student and raped her in a pre-meditated attack. Khan pleaded guilty to two counts of rape at Birmingham Crown Court and was sentenced to seven years and four months in prison. Investigating officer DC Gavin McGrath said: "This young woman endured a sickening ordeal at the hands of Khan, who had planned his attack for a number of days.
Record rainfall wreaks havoc as floodwater peaks at 13.5 inches in the North West

Efforts of volunteers from the Al-Imdaad Foundation, to aid flood victims have gone viral after thousands shared the original post via social media. The East Lancashire organisation says they were shocked by the response after they sent sandwiches, flasks, clothes and support to those affected by Storm Desmond. Abdul Mulla, the director of Al-Imdaad said he was keen to stress
that the fact that they are Muslim shouldn’t come into it. He adds “We're an organisation that will help anyone who's in need. Yes, this time it's gone viral but we need to keep our heads down, continue our work and support whoever is in need around the world.” Hopefully through our actions and our work we can show Muslims in a better light and hopefully the people of Cumbria should now know what Muslims are all about."
ecord rainfall in northern England and Scotland has left thousands of homes without power following severe flooding. More than 60,000 homes across North West England were left without power and over 1,000 residents were evacuated from their homes when flooding caused by Storm Desmond brought widespread devastation across the country. The storm, dubbed “Desmond”, wreaked havoc in Lancashire and Cumbria, where floodwaters reached their peak at 13.5 inches of rain within a 24-hour period. The rainwater caused severe disruption, with hundreds of homes flooded and 10,000 left without power. Residents were left in despair, with the Keswick Mayor voicing criticism at the “completely overwhelmed” defences in his town,
despite the government investing £48 million into flood defenses to stop such widespread devastation from occurring. The military were called in to help the rescue effort in some regions, where pensioners, children and pets had to be evacuated from their homes as muddy water swept into their houses. Flood Minister Rory Stewart has described the amount of rainfall as “unprecedented and unpredicted”, leaving the existing flood defences unable to cope. The government had faced criticism over the disruption caused by floodwaters. Prime Minister David Cameron is set to chair an emergency Cobra meeting to discuss the inadequacy of flood defences and the extent of destruction caused. He has said the government will do all it can to aid the region in its recovery.

World champion boxer joins charity volunteers to support the Carlisle community After touring the streets of Carlisle and witnessing the devastation at firsthand, Amir waded in with physical support by helping to move residents’ furniture and removing water-battered items. “Many are still without electricity and heating – so I’m proud to be going with Penny Appeal and our dedicated volunteers to help in every way that we can. It’s important that we come together, as British people do at times like this, and remind those affected that they’re not alone in dealing with this crisis.”
at the centre, Amir went back on to the streets to hand-deliver food parcels and hot meals to the elderly and those isolated at home. “It was heartbreaking to see just how the floods have destroyed people’s homes, including kitchens, living areas and even things like children's toys. The Amir Khan Foundation wanted to show their support by giving out food and even some new toys to the kids, and remind those affected that they’re not alone in dealing with this crisis” Amir Khan adds.
A teenager with epilepsy has launched a campaign to persuade people to see beyond disabilities. Arshad Daud, with help from the charity Fixers, created a series of posters as part of the drive to encourage people to be more open-minded. The 17-year-old, from Spinney Hills, Leicester, who has been involved in a number of workshops with the Department of Health, also appeared in a video in which he asked viewers not to define him by his disability. As part of the campaign, supported by Leicester Youth Service, Arshad is preparing to participate in school assemblies on people who suffer from mental health issues. Arshad, who began suffering seizures at the age of 10, said: "My life has changed completely since I started having seizures. "I became anxious and found it difficult to interact with others. "Now, I want people to look beyond someone's illnesses and see them for who
they really are. "It's about young people making a difference . "Many tend to judge a person from the outside. I hope this campaign will make them look a little deeper." Young person’s co-ordinator for Fixers, Wesley Erpen, has been helping Arshad with the project. He said: "Arshad feels passionate about this campaign. "His epilepsy has interfered with a lot of his teenage years. "This campaign is also for those affected by mental health issues, even though you can't see something, it can be a disability. Fixers is a national charity which works with young people across the UK, providing youngsters with resources to assist them in campaigning on issues they are passionate about. The charity has aided over 17,000 British young people to have a voice in their community.

Interactive film raises awareness of sexual exploitation A Dudley taxi driver is facing jail time following his use of a fake driving licence to accept speeding points. Afra Sihab, of Apollo Road, Stourbridge, was pulled over by police performing a routine taxi enforcement operation. A search of the 53-year-old’s vehicle led to the discovery of a driving licence belonging to another man, which the taxi driver maintained he was holding for a friend. However, further investigations from the police uncovered that Afra had applied for a driving licence under a different name and date of birth. The taxi driver had used this fake driving license to complete his prosecution form following two speeding offences, which he claimed had been committed by another man at his home address who had been driving his car. Afra was charged with perverting the course of justice at Wolverhampton Crown Court and received a jail term of eight moths. PC Jason Dooley, from the Camera Enforcement Unit, said: "Sihab didn’t want to take the speeding fines as he was a taxi driver and he may have thought this would affect his licence but what he did was criminal and now he has lost his livelihood and his liberty."
A new interactive online film enabling viewers to choose what happens next is the latest addition to a campaign to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation (CSE) across the West Midlands. See Me, Hear Me – Figure Out My Story is a fictional drama about a teenage girl at risk of exploitation. The viewer makes decisions about how her story develops, the choices she makes and how it ends. It aims to not only help raise awareness of CSE among young people but also be a focus for discussion about CSE between young people, parents, carers, schools and professionals. The film is available on the regional See Me, Hear Me CSE
awareness campaign website www.seeme-hearme.org.uk, a one-stop shop for information, help and advice about CSE. It provides advice to young people on how to keep safe and a series of moving films raising awareness of sexual exploitation. There are also sections for parents and carers, professionals and schools, while businesses can download materials including resources specifically aimed at supporting the taxi and hotel industry to spot the signs of CSE. Councillor Val Gibson, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "This thought-provoking film gets people to think about CSE and, importantly, the signs
to look out for. "CSE is a horrendous crime that can affect any child, anytime, regardless of their social or ethnic background. It is child abuse and involves perpetrators grooming their victims in various ways to gain their trust before emotionally and sexually abusing them. “It can take place in many forms, whether through a seemingly consensual relationship, or a young person being forced to have sex in return for some kind of payment, such as drugs, money, gifts or even protection and affection. People can find out more information about child sexual exploitation by visiting www. seeme-hearme.org.uk.
ILLEGAL SCHOOL FOUNDERS FACE JAIL
Three illegal schools in Birmingham are likely to see their founders being jailed following orders from education secretary Nicky Morgan to inspectors to prepare a legal case against them. Ofsted has been instructed to draw up cases for prosecution against all 18 of the unregistered schools they had uncovered in a renewed effort to prevent pupils
being exposed to extremist ideology, Three of the schools shut down in Birmingham were offering a narrow Islamic-based curriculum, according to chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw, and had been employing anti-Semitic, homophobic and misogynistic material in their teaching. By law, independent schools offering full-time education in the
country must register with the Department for Education or face a jail term of up to 51 weeks as well as a fine should they fail to comply. Education secretary Nicky Morgan said: “Tackling extremism in all its forms is a key priority of this Government and since 2010 I have taken robust steps to tackle unregistered schools and improve safeguarding.”

Birmingham Baby Born Four Months Premature in Dublin
Baby veer, born 15 weeks premature in Ireland, has returned home with his parents just in time for Christmas. West Bromwich couple, Ciya and Harprit Parmar were enjoying a four day trip to Ireland in July, when Ciya found herself going into labour, almost four months earlier than predicted. Baby veer was born in Rontunda Hospital in Dublin, at just 1lb 4oz, weighing less then a bag of sugar. Needing round-the-clock care, Veer was kept in the Dublin hospital, along with mother Ciya for the first 3 months of his life, while doctors monitored his slow weight gain. During their extended stay in Dublin, Ciya only saw her husband Harprit once due to his work commitments. “It was so tough for me in Ireland - at times it was very lonely being without my husband and not seeing my parents. But I got through it with the help and support of many kind total strangers in Dublin who supported me.” Ciya adds.
“It was such a huge shock to go into labour at 25 weeks. I had only gone away for a few days to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday and ended up staying in Dublin for three months” Battling Veer was eventually discharged from the Dublin hospital and was finally able to come home, but was soon rushed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital due to an infection. To the relief of his worried parents, baby Veer has now been allowed to come home just in time for Christmas, weighing a healthy 7lbs and 12oz. Delighted Ciya said: “The last four months have been very traumatic but he’s finally home now and is doing so well now. “It was touch and go at times but the care he has received both in Ireland and at the Royal Worcestershire has been unbelievable.” Mother Ciya, 32, was told that she was unlikely to ever have children because of polyps on her ovaries, making Veer’s plight all the more significant. “Veer really is a little miracle who has battled through.”
Takeaway Fined £6,000 A fast food outlet in Dudley has been hit with a fine worth thousands for serving undercooked chicken in a wrap. Chicken Hut, on Castle Street, Dudley, received a £6,000 fine by magistrates following the sale of the affronting meal. The appalled diner purchased the ‘ready-toeat’ wrap for her afternoon meal and noticed an abnormal taste. When she looked at the chicken to investigate the cause, she saw it was still pink in the middle. The customer filed a complaint to Dudley Council’s environmental health service, who dealt a hefty fine to both the takeaway and its director Faheen Ahmed.
Fines to the company included £2,500 for the sale of the chicken, £2,500 for inadequate food safety procedures maintained, costs of £996 and a victim surcharge of £120. The director was issued with an additional conditional discharge for 30 months and was instructed to pay fines exceeding £1,000.

Today we call it Pakistan. We may have not been there to testify to it but that land was a witness to every single act of heroism and barbarism, which made our conviction in unity stronger than ever. We grew up listening to tales of unutterable valour displayed by our ancestors

Today’s circumstances are substantively similar to our history. We see bloodshed and dejection everywhere yet we refuse to give in to fanaticism and it should continue in this way. If yesterday our forefathers waged war to create this nation, then today we would have to continue fighting it to defend our nation.
It is unfortunate that our nemeses are not as audacious and chronically try to shroud their vulnerability with ignominious acts like the Peshawar attack. handful of deluded brutes. The children and the staff members who were assassinated are our martyrs, our heroes. It is high time we stop numbering our martyrs and start honouring them instead. To honour them, we must make sure that we do not let them down. There is no point in mourning them today if we refuse to do something for them that can be celebrated in the coming years. Creating this country was a struggle and helping it evolve is a challenge. What happened in Peshawar that day beggar’s description but amidst everything we do not have to forget that we have to take forward our legacy of struggle and sacrifice. Perhaps every Pakistani is born with it. This is the time we realise that nothing can be worse than giving up on our dream of a better and stable Pakistan. I dread that time more than anything. Our diligence would open new doors of hope and certitude to all those who have almost lost faith in justice and integrity. We shall make them realise that humanity is not dead; it is just being led to a more
pronounced existence. To the Taliban and their supporters, you have hit at the heart of our country, but let me reiterate this you cannot, in any way, diminish our will. You can burn down our schools, tear the lives of families apart and ask minors to recite the kalma before you shoot them in the head. You can wage a war against humanity, impose a rule of tyranny and redefine oppression. Your guns can shoot, but their voices will never echo louder than the determination of this nation. You can shoot down Malala, martyr Aitzaz and end the life of over 130 children in Peshawar. But the Malala’s and Aitzaz’s of this country will never stop emerging and they will never be forgotten. We’re a nation built on resolve, commitment and a sense of duty. We are a nation built on the foundations of Unity, Faith and Discipline – and these ideals will be greater tomorrow than ever before.

Manchester Museum £5 million for a permanent South Asia Gallery
Following a manifesto commitment by the current government the Chancellor announced on 25 November that £5 million will support Manchester Museum (part of The University of Manchester) to create a new South Asia gallery in partnership with the British Museum. The gallery will form the centrepiece of the Museum’s new £11.5 million capital expansion which will include a much larger space for temporary exhibitions, a new entrance and expanded public facilities. The South Asia gallery will draw on some of the best of the national collections from the British Museum to showcase the history and cultures of this pivotal region, in a way that will engage the city-region’s diverse communities, day visitors and tourists. It will also be developed
in close consultation with local communities. It is particularly appropriate to site this gallery in Manchester, as nearly 9% of the Greater Manchester population is of South Asian origin. This large population has come about because of the strong historic links between Manchester and the Indian sub-continent through the textile trade. However, their culture and history has been under-represented, and bringing the British Museum’s collection to northern England provides an opportunity to address this. The Director of Manchester Museum, Dr Nick Merriman, said ‘I am delighted that the Chancellor has announced this funding. It means that, with a commitment from the University, we have already raised over 50% of the funding needed to deliver the facilities we need

for the Manchester Museum to engage with larger and broader audiences. The South Asia gallery will be a great draw for local residents and tourists alike, and is the natural outcome of our partnership work with the British Museum, which has been developing for more than a decade.’ Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum said 'We are delighted that the Chancellor has recognised the important role that museums and galleries play in the life of the UK and to Britain’s role in the world. The South Asia gallery at Manchester Museum is the latest in a series of partnership galleries which the British Museum has undertaken with key UK partners. The £5 million announced by the Chancellor is a significant investment which will benefit local and national and global audiences alike.’

HEALTH COLUMN HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT
Sarah Martin, senior weight management dietician at Heartlands Hospital, shares tips on how to trim down in the new year. It is that time of year again where people will be making New Year’s resolutions. One of the most common resolutions made is to lose weight. Did you know being overweight can lead to health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke? Making sensible changes to your levels of physical activity as well as your diet will make a difference. Losing weight will not happen overnight and it will take time. Drastic fad diets and exercise regimes that result in rapid weight loss are unlikely to work for long since these types of lifestyle changes are difficult to maintain.
So what can be done to lose weight? The healthy body mass index (BMI) is a measure of whether you have a healthy weight for your height. If your BMI falls into the overweight range, aim to achieve a weight that puts your weight in the healthy range. If your weight is in the obese division, set yourself a target of losing between 5%-10% of your starting weight. Find ways of increasing your levels of physical activity. Try to get off the bus one stop early on the way home and walk the rest of the way. During your lunch break you could even take a walk to the shops. You do not have to spend several hours at the gym and being regularly active can help you to maintain weight loss. The right amount of physical activity depends on your age. It is recommended that adults between 19 and 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week. Asians tend to add
butter/ghee to improve the taste of Asian dishes. As an alternative, you could use rapeseed oil. Rather than having a heavy meal in the evening, it is better to have smaller meals throughout the day.
Alternating your Asian meals with other healthier meals will help you lose weight. For example, have salads with plenty of spinach, tomatoes and cucumbers instead of eating samosas and pakoras. As a substitute for desi sweets, eat fresh fruit salads. Cut down on foods that are high in saturated fat and sugar such as cakes, biscuits, pastries and pies. Try to eat less salt as well. Cutting down on the amount of alcohol you drink will allow you to control your weight.
Remembering The Battle of Ferozeshah
PICTURE OF THE MONTH
Wolverhampton parade commemorates battle which formed part of the first Anglo-Sikh War The 170th anniversary of the Battle of Ferozeshah was commemorated with a parade in Wolverhampton. The battle, which took place at the village of Ferozeshah in the Punjab in December 1845, was part of the First Anglo-Sikh War and saw 694 people killed and 1,721 wounded. Some 150 members of the Mercian Regiment were joined by around 80 members of the Sikh community, including re-enactors in traditional uniform, for a parade at the Army Reserve Centre, Wolseley House, Fallings Park. Deputy Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Barry Findlay, who attended the event, described it as “a joint commemoration of a shared heritage”. He said: “I am pleased to have been invited to take part in this event. “The battle led to the annexation of the Sikh Kingdom, which in turn led to Sikhs serving in the British
Indian Army and making a significant contribution to the British war effort in both the First and Second World Wars. “This also led to many Sikhs coming to the UK, becoming British citizens and playing an important role in our nation’s recent history.” The Battle of Ferozeshah was fought on 21 December and 22 December 1845. The British were led by Sir Hugh Gough and Governor-General Sir Henry Hardinge, while the Sikhs were led by Lal Singh. The British emerged victorious. During the Battle, The 80th Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers) – which has historic links to the modern Mercian Regiment – distinguished itself by mounting a night attack on the Sikh artillery, which turned the course of the battle. Earlier, Colour Sergeant Matthew Kirkland captured the Sikh standard now on display in Lichfield Cathedral.
The worlds oldest couple. Karam Chand and his wife Kartari have celebrated their birthdays together. Karam turned 110 and Kartari turned 103. Here are some facts about the couple:They married in a traditional Sikh ceremony on December 11th 1925. This was the year Margaret Thatcher was born and Stanley Baldwin was the British Prime Minister. They met in India as loved up teens and have never left each other's side since. Mr Chand smokes one cigarette a day before his evening meal. The couple has eight children, 27 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Chand moved to England 50 years ago with Bradford being their home for more than seven decades.
Behind Bars Eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. A glass of 100 percent unsweetened fruit juice counts as one portion. Why not try chopping various fruits over your breakfast cereal? Go easy on the carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and rice and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Stay motivated, stick to healthy eating and think positively. If you are worried about your weight, contact your local GP or talk to a dietician for advice. You can also visit the NHS Choices website (www.nhs. uk) for more advice on how to lose weight.

A Birmingham drug dealer has been handed a prison sentence of more than six years. Zahir Hussain, of Trafalgar Grove, Yardley, was imprisoned for heading a crack cocaine and heroin operation through a phone network. The 40-year-old was tracked down by West Midlands Police officers to an apartment in Birmingham’s city centre, where a search warrant revealed a small quantity of Class A drugs, £10,000 in cash as well as mobile handsets which formed part of the drug dealing operation. Zahir, found guilty of conspiracy to supply drugs, was sentenced to six years and three months at Birmingham Crown Court. PC David Harman, financial investigator at West Midlands Police, said: "This was a sophisticated drugs operation. "Messages on his phones showed text messages to drug users boasting about the quality of the drugs, advice to runners about how to boost sales and even demands for sales figures. "Further messages showed desperate drug users offering personal belongings in exchange for drugs highlighting the misery being brought upon the community."

A
former student has landed a part in BBC serial drama ‘Doctors’, just a month after achieving his qualification in August. Sunjay Midda, 19 from Wolverhampton, studied Level 3 Performing Arts at Walsall college and is now set to make his TV debut. He will play the part of a 15-year boy, Shakib Hanif, the son of midwife, Ruhma Hanif, in the soap. Screened on weekday lunchtimes on BBC One, Doctors is set in a busy Midlands practice following the turbulent lives and loves of the staff and patients. First broadcast in 2000, it is now watched by around 2 million viewers. Sunjay has previously appeared in commercials for brands, JD Sport and M&M Direct, and also in a production at the Birmingham Hippodrome, but the role in Doctors is his first major acting part. He filmed six episodes in September which air in December and January and he will also be filming more episodes early next year. He said: “This really is a dream come true. Acting has always been what I wanted to do so to get a role on a mainstream television show watched by millions feels amazing.” After completing his GCSEs, Sunjay initially stayed on at sixth form to do A-levels and tried a few different courses before he decided to follow his dream and study performing arts at Walsall College, where his passion was really sparked. He said: “I was really excited about coming to Walsall College as it had just been rated outstanding and I was inspired by former students who had gone on to do well in the industry.

THE DEVOLUTION DEAL I was asked to photograph the Devolution Deal signing for the West Midlands Combined Authority a couple of weeks ago. In case this sentence makes no sense to you whatsoever, let me explain. The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is made up of the Councils of Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton. They are working together to attract funds from Central Government which are to be spent on projects across the entire Combined Authority e.g. Transport. The Devolution Deal is the culmination of negotiations for the money and how and where it is spent. After months of confidential negotiations, it was agreed ahead of The Spending Review and signed two weeks ago in Coventry. The Government demanded the Combined Authority elect a Regional Mayor, someone who in George Osborne’s words ‘would get the credit if things went well, and carried the can if they went less well.’ Basically a Greater Birmingham Boris Johnson. Just don’t shout the words Greater Birmingham too loud. So far no one’s put their name forward. As Christmas approaches and people take time off to sit and reflect, you can be assured come the new year, candidates will step forward. So who’ll take on the responsibility for a role that has no precedence? Let’s look at some of the possible candidates. Andy Street, Chair of Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP). Andy Street has the energy of an atomic bomb and the communication skills of Obama. He has demonstrated great leadership in the GBSLEP and as MD of John Lewis. Andy would be a quality candidate. Question is, would he want to do it?

Ninder Johal, President of The Black Country Chamber. Ninder Johal is an intelligent and personable operator. His network stretches long and wide and he has demonstrated the importance of collaborative working. He was a bridge for many of the regions within the West Midlands long before anyone uttered the words ‘Combined Authority‘. Ninder beats the drum for business with the same passion he did for the Bhangra band Achanak. Gisela Stuart, Labour MP for Edgbaston. Gisela has fought and retained the extremely marginal Edgbaston seat since 1997 proving her political acumen. Quite simply she is a remarkable ambassador for Birmingham. Gisela has championed the city at the Commons in hosting Birmingham Days showcasing the best Brum has to offer. Sion Simon, MEP for the West Midlands. Sion originally stood down as Birmingham MP for Erdington to fight for the role of City Mayor. The electorate had other ideas with 58% voting No in the referendum to have a City Mayor for Birmingham. A close friend of Labour’s Deputy Leader, Tom Watson, it would be a brave person to bet against Sion getting the Labour ticket. James Wong, Chung Ying Group. James may be surprised I’ve included his name here. The West Midlands is the only region that can boast a trade surplus with China. A lot of those deals come through Hong Kong which is where James’ family originate from. Having a Regional Mayor with an insight into this part of the world as well as a proven track record in Business would pay huge dividends. His brother William would keep the business operating in his absence. Lord Digby Jones, Business Ambassador. If you were to X-ray Lord Jones, you would be presented with the word ‘Business.’

How far will he go?
An Unrepentant Trump Pedals His 'Un-American' Intolerance
Questions remain as to the extent of his plans?
“We need a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the US while we figure out what the hell is going on,”. Accepting that his proposal was “probably not politically correct”, the Republican candidate added: “But. I Don’t. Care.” Trump was also unrepentant as he toured television studios in the US, despite condemnation from top leaders within the party, including the chairman of the Republican National Committee to ex US vice-president Dick Cheney, who branded his plans as “un-American”.
It is not yet clear if the plans, intended to affect Muslim immigrants and tourists, also extends to American citizens. Republican strategist Rick Wilson, a known vocal critic of Trump, has been left horrified by the billionaire’s marked evasion regarding the subject, something – if it were to go ahead – would be shockingly unconstitutional. “I wanted to hear that explicitly stated,” Wilson said. “American citizens are exempted from this, and in order to satisfy his supporters, he can’t and won’t say that.”
Shocked Silence Left Shattered Representatives from across the political spectrum challenge the billionaire’s latest offensive comments

PENSIONER ATTACK
Teenager, Omair Zaman, has been sentenced to 43 months in prison, after attacking and killing pensioner Andy Pratt. Zaman, 19, pleaded guilty to a charge of man-slaughter after he
assaulted the 72 year old in an unprovoked attack, near his home in Foleshill in May. Pratt was taken to University Hospital in Coventry with severe head injuries from which he never fully recovered and later died on August 8th. Zaman was initially arrested on suspicion of wounding the pensioner in May. That was then upgraded to murder after Mr Pratts death, however, no evidence was given on that charge at Warwick Crown Court and he instead pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The teenager was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Detective Sergeant Michelle Kiedron has said “We accept the court’s decision and hope that the jailing of this dangerous man offers some comfort to Andrew’s family.”

ver 300 guests attended a charity dinner and helped raise almost £19,000 for Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK. Charity champion, Mandip Sahota, joined forces with Ventnor Hall to stage the Asian Cancer Awareness Fundraiser. The event was formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, and Gary Hooks - Chief Inspector of Bradford District Police. Speakers included Bradford MP, Naz Shah - Bradford Council’s portfolio lead for health; Councillor Ralph Berry and former Bradford MP, David Ward. Cancer survivor, Archana Chowski, also took to the stage to explain how attending a cancer screening led to her early diagnosis and encourage guests with health concerns to go for tests.
In a specially recorded video message, Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, thanked everyone for their support. Dr Ryan Matthew - a Leeds-based brain surgeon -discussed his groundbreaking research into brain tumours and called on attendees to share any health issues with their loved ones and GP on behalf of the charity. Mandip and the owners of Ventnor Hall decided to organise the event after witnessing increasing numbers of family and friends being affected by cancer and believing that there is a widespread lack of awareness around spotting the signs of cancer and a reluctance to discuss cancer openly across the Asian community. The owners of Ventnor Hall added they wanted to take action after losing their close friend, Mr.
Balbinder Singh Hayer, to cancer last year. Together, Mandip and Ventnor Hall agreed that whilst they had been unable to save others, they would raise funds to help Cancer Research UK find a cure and for Marie Curie to continue providing dignified care. Speaking after the event, Mandip Sahota said, “We have been overwhelmed by the kind donations we’ve received from guests, family, friends and the local community and would like to extend our thanks to everyone who helped and pledged money. We wish to pay particular thanks to the committee and congregation of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara for their continuing support and generosity as well as local businesses, sponsors and those who donated prizes for the successful raffle.”

West Midlands Police
PRAISED The West Midlands Police have been praised for their action on cases of female genital mutilation, forced marriages and honour-based violence. Only police forces in the West Midlands, Derbyshire and Northumbria are believed to be well equipped enough to tackle this calibre of crimes. The West Midlands Region is said to have some of the highest number of female genital mutilation and honour-based violence outside of London. A news report from police watchdog HM Inspectorate of Constabulary discovered that the West Midlands force was one of three across the UK which were properly equipped to protect people from these usually unreported crimes. West Midland Police dealt with 70 reported cases of female genital mutilation in the first 7 months of this year alone, almost three times as many as last year. A staggering 632 females were treated for issues linked to female genital mutilation between last September and March this month. The majority sought help for repeat infections, pain and even infertility as a result of the surgery undergone abroad. Supt Angie Whitaker, from West Midlands Police has said: “While we are pleased that our hard work alongside community groups and support agencies has been recognised, there is much more for us to do. We are not complacent and acknowledge that forced marriages, honour based violence and female genital mutilation are often hidden and under reported crimes.” Along with its high level of staff awareness and victim care, West Midlands Police’s ongoing publicity campaigns were highlighted as an area of strength.

Judge Robert Brown, who sentenced Ashrafi in February after a four-week trial, said the £650,000 included £50,000 from blackmail and the rest was from 15 frauds. Judge Brown told the hearing: "He has not provided a statement and declined to give evidence. He knows, because it has been explained to him, that the onus is on him to satisfy me that he does not have hidden assets.” The judge explained to Ashrafi that if he did not

alsall College Hairdressing students held an Avant-Garde hair show on Monday 23rd November at the college’s Graduate Academy salon and showcased their creative talents. As part of a Creative Design unit on their course, Level 3 students were set the challenge to come up with experimental and innovative hairdos using different styling techniques. The show featured a mix of styles from crimping to braiding with themed makeup, costumes and accessories to complete the overall looks. Students’ designs took inspiration from nature, iconic landmarks, current fashion trends, history and films. Curriculum Manager for Hairdressing and Beauty at Walsall College, Jo Small, said: “This Avant-Garde themed show allowed our Hairdressing students to really stretch their imaginations and display their
artistic flair alongside their technical hairdressing skills. The looks they produced are outstanding by any standard, and certainly styles which wouldn’t look out of place on a catwalk or fashion shoot. “The students did a lot of research and constructed mood boards as part of this project, which has given them an insight in to an area of the industry they may wish to pursue careers in. They will also have their final looks photographed by a photographer which they can use as part of their portfolios when applying for jobs.” Student, Kyla Green, said: “This has been my favourite unit on the course so far as it really gave me the chance to have fun exploring different creative styles. I’d recommend this course to anyone considering a career in hairdressing. It’s a great place to learn, the facilities are brilliant and the tutors are really helpful and have a lot of experience.”

EXCLUSIVE CAST INTERVIEWS INSIDE
Set to be the biggest Bollywood hit of the year, it’s no surprise that Dilwale has audiences waiting in eager anticipation for its world-wide release. Packed with action and a star studded cast, it’s easy to see why Dilwale is the movie everyone’s talking about! The up-and-coming hit sees Bollywood’s beloved duo Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol rekindle their renowned chemistry five years after My Name is Khan and an unbelievable twenty-two years after their first hit together, the1993 film Baazigar. According to Khan, he says it’s down to their enduring friendship and the love of the audience. "We started off together and that has a huge place in our hearts. We can joke, we can laugh about each other and we can also be very serious about the work we do.
The hit film introduces newcomers Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, who jumped at the chance to star alongside the silver screen veterans. Dhawan adds: "The cast of this film comprises some absolute legends. There’s obviously Shah Rukh and Kajol, there's Johnny Lever, there's Boman Irani, Kabir Bedi.” Rohit shetty’s new production sees a couple in love try to overcome the violent conflict between their families, and typical to Shetty’s style, Dilwale has an interesting mix of action, drama and comedy. While Shah rukh and Varun will be leading the action sequences, Johnny Lever and Fukrey star Varun Sharma will be adding humorous touches to the rich and original plot. King Khan and his team have been busy promoting their new Bollywood hit, teasing audiences with exclusive song releases and clips, causing fan-frenzy world-wide and reaching over 5 million views on YouTube alone.

aul Chowdhry has made quite a splash in the comedy world. With national sold-out tours and numerous awards, such as the Asian Professional Media Award and Loaded Laftas Funniest Stand-Up of 2013, it's no wonder the London-born comedian is going from strength to strength. After the success of his 1st DVD release, Chowdhry's 2nd DVD ‘PC’s World’ is set to split sides! The Asian Today speak to him about his current success.
This action drama is set in a vicious and violent environment based on Raj and Meera. They have to deal with the conflict between their respective families and the repercussions of merciless violence between them. It’s about Raj, Meera and their enchanting relationship. Dilwale brings back together the most celebrated on screen couple of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol after the massive box office hit My Name Is Khan (2010). The lead pair has mesmerised audiences with their scorching chemistry in movies like ‘Karan Arjun‘, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayege‘,‘Baazigar‘, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham‘ and the recent ‘My Name Is Khan’. The film also stars Varun Dhawan who plays the younger brother of Khan whilst Kriti Sanon is his love interest. Once again director Rohit Shetty is back after his box office money spinner Chennai Express with Dilwale choosing Kajol and Khan as the main focus of his film. Not much is known of the storyline because Shetty wants to keep it well under wraps until the release of the film. But rest assured Dilwale has all the typical elements of a Bollywood potboiler including drama, emotions, action and lots of twists and turns typical Rohit Shetty style to keep audiences engrossed throughout. Whilst the first part deals with romance post intermission takes a different turn with an emotional twist which will surprise audiences.

Who are your comedic inspirations?
I had a lot of comedic inspirations, a lot of friends and family. Growing up in the 80’s, a lot of my family members were hardcore Panjabi and a lot of the characters I’ve created are from that era. The comedians I used to watch were Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinison, all those kinda guys.

Stand-up comedy isn’t a conventional career, especially with Asians. When did you decide that this was what you wanted to do?
Forget Asians, it's not conventional with anyone. Even if an English person said to his parents, "I want to be a comedian," his dad would say, "what you talking about?" It’s a very risky thing to do, but you gotta follow your dreams, otherwise you don’t know if it’s going to work or not. If I never tried it, I'd never know if I could be in this position.
Does your comedy have any underlying message? Is it just banter and humour?
In this DVD there’s probably an undertone of a slight message in terms of what political correctness is these days and what people believe it to be. We all adapt to social environments and we’re different around different people. Everyone’s pretending to be something they’re not. Everyone’s following the herd; no-one really knows what someone actually wants or what they believe in.
4
What do you make of social media in today’s world?
It’s just another form of control, not many people voice their true opinion. When I put a joke up, I get a lot of flack for it but I have to stand by my jokes.
5
Do you think we’ve gone OTT with being PC?
I don’t believe anything is PC; everyone is different around different people. Your PC is going to be very different to my PC. I might get offended by something you say but you might think it's very PC to say that. Noone knows what PC is, if you asked someone ‘what is PC?', nobody would actually be able to answer the question.
“I used to write jokes at home and tell stories to my friends and they used to find it funny. When I used to talk in class, I’d get kicked out of the classroom because everyone would start laughing!”
GUZ KHAN Since The Asian Today last spoke to YouTube sensation Guz Khan, the Midlands based Comedian has created quite a splash! Between presenting his new slot on
the BBC Asian Network and taking part in BBC’s Asian Comedy Event, Guz has gone from strength to strength! He speaks to us about his recent endeavours.
So, you’re presenting BBC Asian Network, that’s a bug deal! how do you feel about it? It’s crazy! There are a lot of people, who train themselves in the craft of radio art, and this kind of opportunity came to me and I’m very grateful for it I can’t believe that it’s come around so quickly. What inspired you implement religion and Islam into your comedy? Well the main thing is I’m a Muslim aren’t I! If you look at the mainstream media representation, they will pick on Islam and pull it apart. They show it in a way that it isn’t. I try my best to make it positive really. What’s it like behind the scenes in the radio studio? Bare brown people and loads of expensive equipment! That’s what’s going on in the studio.
Have you made any live blunders or faux-pas? Things like swearing, i get the jhooti at home anyway. As a comedian, I get ideas that come into my head and there’s no filter so I have to be very careful about that. I will never openly comment or offend someone’s theology, faith or beliefs, I take that very seriously. So what else are you up to now? I’m doing the Asian Comedy Event on the 11th of December. Me and my boy Tez Ilyas are going to be out there and there’s going to be a host of other comedians. It’s celebrating 50 years of Asian Programmes and seeing how it has changed. People can get their tickets online and they’re free so bare browns will love that!

KAJOL
KAJOL did DILWALE because of the script!
Kajol has mesmerised audiences worldwide for decades and the beautiful actress is set to appear on UK cinema screens again with Dilwale on 18th December. The multiple award-winner was last seen on the big screen in My Name Is Khan opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film went on to become the highest grossing Bollywood film in the UK at that time. Kajol and King Khan are justifiably famous for their romantic collaborations and fans around the world have waited with bated breath to see them reunite on the silver screen once again. It is now a win-win situation for fans of both actors who will get to see SRK and Kajol in Dilwale, directed by Rohit Shetty. Speaking to The Asian Today’s Sunny Malik during her recent trip to London, Kajol said that the decision to do the film was partly because of Shah Rukh and partly because of Rohit Shetty. “I've known Rohit for a very long
time. He has been close to my husband and Ajay has starred in all of his movies with the exception of Chennai Express. My decision to do Dilwale was partly because Rohit was making the film. However, it was mostly the script that made me decide to do the film.” “The script has to be good enough and interesting enough for me to take hundred days out of my regular life. I need to focus and enjoy every of those days and the people around me play a big factor in that. Shah Rukh was a big part of it and so was Rohit.” Dilwale also stars rising superstar Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. Interestingly, Shah Rukh and Kajol have known Varun for a long time as he was an assistant director on Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. Talking about Varun, who plays Shah Rukh’s younger brother in the film, Kajol said, “He has a good solid head on his shoulders. I think, he is very hardworking and conscientious. That’s the difference between a flash in the pan and longevity.” While Kajol is known for her acting skills, people are also aware about the fact that she is straightforward and honest, not a trait commonly found in actors. “I prefer not to have a bubble around me. I would like to have the bubble around sometimes. But it’s too much of an effort and I’m too lazy. I don’t remember half of the things I say and if I lie, I won’t remember it. Hence, I find it’s just easy to say the truth.”
KRITI SANON: “Acting can’t be taught” Kriti Sanon is a rising star in Bollywood. She made her Bollywood acting debut with Heropanti and is now starring in a film that also stars SRK and Kajol. That is extremely impressive for a second film as Dilwale seems to be the biggest film of the year. Being in London to promote her second film and have thousands of fans scream out her name at Cineworld Cinemas in Feltham, west-London was quite overwhelming for the actress. Kriti sat down with The Asian Today’s Sunny Malik in a Central London venue and spoke about her journey in Bollywood so far.

ROHIT SHETTY FILM
VARUN DHAWAN
Varun Dhawan is coming to UK cinemas on 18th December with this year's biggest blockbuster, Dilwale. Directed by Rohit Shetty, the action packed rom-com also stars superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Kriti Sanon along with a number of other prominent actors. The 28-years-old actor recently descended into London to promote the film and caught up with our Bollywood correspondent, Sunny Malik and opened up about the film and much more...
01
There are only a few days to go now and then your biggest film so far, will release in UK cinemas and worldwide. Are you nervous?
I have had two releases this year and have seen quite a bit of Dilwale already. I hope that Dilwale can become the most entertaining film of the year.
02
Before the official announcement came, you were often asked about playing a role in Dilwale based on rumours. You seemed excited but always refused to comment. Are you over the moon now that you can talk about it freely?
People often forget that I have only done five films so far. Dilwale is my sixth movie and working with seniors like Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is extraordinary.I got to learn quite a lot. It was just great to be a part of a film of such a huge magnitude. I will be exposed to audiences that don't even know me because of my co-actors. I just loved doing the film because I am an actor and I love entertaining. With Dilwale, I was given an opportunity to do so.
03
Was it Shah Rukh Khan who approached you to star in the film?
I believe the idea came from both Shah Rukh and Rohit Shetty. They obviously discussed it before approaching me. I told the director that the movie will be a blockbuster regardless of who plays my role, just because the script is so good. The emotional bond between the brothers, played by Shah Rukh and I, is so strong that it will be felt by anyone who watches the film. With action, romance and comedy, Dilwale is a film definitely to look out for.

Dilwale is getting competition from a few movies on Christmas at UK cinemas this year. Why should this film be their choice?
As an audience, I am just excited because of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and I don't think there are many who won't get excited by their pairing. I feel this is not about competition. We went into Dilwale with the intention of making the biggest entertainer. Anyone and everyone can watch it. In the UK, the diaspora misses everything about their home as they are away. They miss the culture and they miss the places. All Asians and all other audiences will enjoy the film. The film will make a special place in the hearts of NRIs and I can gurantee you that. UK audiences have always loved Shah Rukh Khan and always enjoyed his movies. I know that well as I lived in the UK and I have seen the craze myself.
“I come from a non-film background and never thought about becoming an actress. Suddenly, I became a model and acting just happened as well. There were a few movies before Heropanti that were offered to me but I consciously didn’t take up the offers. I never expected Heropanti to do so well and was happy that I was accepted by audiences and by the film industry. Then Dilwale happened and it's just such a huge film to be a part of. I don’t think I will ever get such a chance again. To be directed by Rohit Shetty and to work with so many great actors in one film is quite surreal.” Kriti is already known for being an extremely confident actress and even
won several awards for Best Debut Actor for her first film. “Acting is something that can’t be taught because there is no right way of doing it. This is something that Shah Rukh Khan says very often. He often says that there is no right way of doing a scene,” revealed the 25-year-old actress. “I have been fortunate so far that people have been nice to me on social media. I think, as an actor one needs to be very strong emotionally. There can be negativity even if you do nothing but there needs to be filter as we need to listen to constructive criticism.”

The Clothes Show Live is one of the best platforms for independent retailers, and this year I was impressed with the talent. My top picks of Independent retailers included: Treedolls Treedolls is a London based brand that offers high-street fashion with a modest touch. Tips To Keep Fit & Healthy This Christmas! It’s Christmas time, which means mulled wine, mince pies, turkey leftovers, chocolate, and alcohol, plus time off work – it’s a bad combination for our waistlines and our motivation, AND it’s cold outside too!! Christmas is a time when people often go way overboard with their eating habits, chocolate for breakfast lunch and dinner. These bad habits can lead to lack of energy and enthusiasm and can set us back months in our fitness goals. So how can we survive this festive season without piling on the extra pounds that take weeks to get rid of? Here are my Top 10 ways to enjoy a healthy and happy Christmas for you and your loved ones. Ditch the chocolates
Sweets
and
Swap sugary sweets for fruit - cranberries are great at this time of year with only 25 calories in half a cup. Family Walks Walking the dog or just going for a walk together is a great way for everyone to burn calories and enjoy the winter scenery. Supplements As the days are shorter and the flu season begins one of the best ways to stay healthy is through additional supplements even a basic multi-vitamin can help pep you up. Alcohol Alternatives Fruit cocktails are a healthy and delicious alternative - or of course you could offer to drive and stick to water saving yourself a hangover and your friends a fortune on taxi fare. Healthy Christmas Dinner When it comes to the big event pile your plate high with veg and opt for a nice lean turkey. Cauliflower is a great source of Vitamin C and it’s good for your heart. Dance the Night Away If you are out at a party hit the dance floor and burn off those excess calories. Healthy Start Water & lemon
Start the day with a nice cup of hot water with a lemon slice. This will help to alkalise the stomach and settle your PH levels important when you are eating a lot of rich acidic food throughout the day. Avoid some foods While it’s nice to indulge you will help yourself if you can steer clear of the bread and cheese – Opt for a smaller plate and pile your plate high with salad on those Christmas teas and go for meat rather than cheese. Healthy Seasonal Snacks And finally there are some lovely healthy choices to be had at Christmas time – make sure you try some tasty nuts, fruits. This will help you keep away from those chocolate selection boxes! Workout Just because your normal routine’s gone out of the window it doesn’t mean you can’t workout – 10 minutes of HIIT training first thing will set you up for the day, or go for a 30 minute run or dust off that rowing machine and give it a go! These are just a few handy tips that can help keep you on the straight and narrow so you don’t go completely off the rails and undo all the hard work you’ve done this year.
Wishing you all a very happy, healthy Christmas! You can tweet Dal your questions Twitter: @daldhaliwalPT Find her on Facebook: /Dal Dhaliwal www.bodyperfectpt.com

Raaj Shamji the first accredited Fellow of The British Toastmasters Guild of South Asian origin. A qualified management accountant, by day he works for BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY as an Assistant Director of student services. Like every good Indian boy he has a part time job as an Asian wedding toastmaster, awards host and coach in public speaking and team building. Let's look at how he juggled his day job with co presenting the first BIRMINGHAM Awards on the 27th November 2015.
What’s an average day in your life like?
07:00-08:00
I was up reviewing the structure and of the evenings inaugural Birmingham Awards - have a slight panic that I am going to be spreading 5 minutes good material over 3 hours.... Set out to drop my son off at the bus stop near my home in Streetly and then travel to the Curzon Building in Birmingham City centre where my office is based. The council have allowed so much to be built in the city centre but haven't necessarily planned our travel infrastructure accordingly to get into the city centre. So I'm stuck in traffic listening to an album by Extreme called 3 Shades to Every Story. So many cars, so many road-works so many angry drivers. Though to be fair, it's probably Extreme pumping out at full volume that's irritating my fellow drivers more than the traffic jam.
08:00-09:00
Eat a Dairy Milk for early morning energy. Then it's time to look at teams schedule for the day and check they all know what they are doing.
09:00-13:00
One of the brilliant things about my job is the variety and the buzz we get from helping our students to achieve. The morning involved meetings about developing advice services, discussing finance with a couple of teams and liaising on a forthcoming survey for graduates. Plus lots of emails and phone calls. Only pausing for a Dairy Milk at 11am.
13:00-14:00
Arrived at home. Shower and shave. I have to shave because I can't grow a beard. Print out the speech for this evening after talking to Dan Kelly as his printer isn't working. This also provides me with the opportunity to swap some of Dans best lines for some of my worst. Have a quick Dairy Milk for lunch.
14:00-18:00
Arrived at Edgbaston tonight's venue - listened hard to the fantastic Parsi boy singing The Great Pretender on repeat in the car. Stopped off to buy healthy snacks for energy, but instead got some Dairy Milk chocolate. Arrived for sound check and a run through the timing with Dan Kelly and the events coordinator Anita Champaneri. Screwed up my gag and get a little nervous but hopefully it will be alright on the night. Eat another Dairy Milk for nerves.
18:00-19:00
Nearly showtime. Eat another Dairy Milk. Let's roll.
19:00-21:00
Showtime!!!! Rang the bell, closed the bar temporarily to get all the guests in and watched Dan Kelly arrive on stage with his entourage of Bhangra drummers. As it was Black Friday I was in the middle of ordering an iPhone 6s when Dan called me on stage. Ordered it just in time.
21:00
The evening goes well. At least I think so. Dan was a pleasure to work with. Eat a Dairy Milk to celebrate.
Tell us about your career? I started off training as an accountant now I work within a university department called student services. My career has been around building relationships and working in a team. I felt lonely as an accountant maybe because I hadn't discovered me. Plus I can't add up. Now I have discovered myself I might go back to being an accountant, or a taster for Cadburys. I think I will always be a toastmaster. I love dressing up in the red jacket. Where did your passion for your career come from? A strong desire to seek attention. Yes I'm an attention seeker. I love people and I love myself. Wearing that red jacket and holding a microphone is definite attention seeking with a positive twist of ensuring an event runs smoothly, be it a wedding, an award ceremony or a training seminar. Expressing yourself is liberating. That and I didn't want to do anything that involved the cold or lifting. What does the future hold in store for you? Unsure. I'm happily going through my mid life crisis. In 2016 I'm going to write a film screen play with my fellow working class Black Country brother Matthew Till (though I haven't told him yet!) and I am going to join a choir. My wife and I are expecting a little girl in April - we got the name sorted, the wife and I just need to ensure we get enough sleep until she arrives. My son and daughter are excited. Bring on Simpson style family, Maggie, nappies and dummies. How do you intend to utilise your platform to make sure we encourage more South-Asian people into business? Asians love business and we know how to have a good time. So let's have more parties and celebrate everything. The journey of illness can be a long and lonely one. Whether you are recovering from surgery, cancer, going through a stressful period, grief or any condition that compromises “normal” living, it can be a rollercoaster of emotional highs and lows. You can take control of fluctuating thoughts and emotions by chanelling your energy into journaling. Keeping a journal is not only good for your soul, but for your body too. It is widely recommended by therapists to supplement treatment. New research by psychologists Dr James Pennebaker of the University of Texas and Dr Joshua Smyth of Syracuse University suggests that writing about emotions and stress can boost immunity in patients with HIV/AIDS, asthma and arthritis as well as offering physical benefits to people battling terminal or lifethreatening diseases. The healing power of writing lies in helping you to understand and learn from your emotions. When you are deeply in touch with your needs you are better able to cope with obstacles. Journaling is like having an inner conversation with your mind, body and emotions bringing them together in wholeness. It’s your story; you can write as if you were consoling yourself, vent an outburst of emotions or write to discover where you have been and to decide where you are going.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn accused the Prime Minister of having a “bomb first, talk later” strategy to Islamic State in Syria.
Keeping Britain Safe Cameron Spurred On To Act Following Paris Attacks
The PM, eager to aid France and the United States in their bombing campaign against IS, had been spurred into action following the Paris attacks. He insisted military action was a necessary preventative measure to keep Britons safe from attacks similar to those that took place in the French capital last month, when terrorists killed 130 people.

“Don't Bomb Syria” Stop The War Coalition Entreats David Cameron To Rethink Bombing Campaign
Thousands of protesters descended on central London in an effort to stop Britain’s intended military intervention in Syria. The 4,000-strong crowd of anti-war protesters gathered in Parliament Square as part of an emergency demonstration against Prime Minister David Cameron’s proposed air
strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria. Participants of the protest joined forces on the eve of the parliamentary vote as part of a campaign by the Stop the War coalition as Parliament looked set follow Prime Minister David Cameron’s lead in voting in favour of the strikes.
Lindsey German of the Stop the War Coalition protest movement told the crowd: “We’re here to say one simple thing: ‘Don’t bomb Syria. Don’t do what you did in 2001, 2003 and 2011’,” referring to Britain’s involvement in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
Pakistani Charity Wins International Award Charity Aware Girls is one of just 20 organisations from around the world to receive an inaugural With and For Girls Award. The With and For Girls Awards is a global initiative to identify and support strong local organisations working with and for girls with flexible funding. The charity – based in Peshawar, Pakistan – is recognised for its work to promote equal rights for girls and young women and its position as a platform to equip them with knowledge and leadership skills. C
hants of “Shame on you” arose among the thousands of protesters gathered in Parliament Square as the news of the decision to perform military action against Islamic State
in Syria rippled through the anti-war demonstrators. The vote to launch the air strikes against Islamic State has not been met favourably, and multiple postvote demonstrations
have been organised across the country voicing criticism of the government’s decision. Traffic was brought to a standstill in Manchester’s city centre when 200 people
marched through the city into Piccadilly Gardens to oppose the decision, with anti-war protesters shouting condemnations of both the bombing and the Conservative government.
India’s Foreign Minister to Visit Pakistan Indian Foreign Minister Shuhsma Swaraj is set to hold talks with Pakistan in Efforts to restart a peace dialogue between the Nations. The diplomats will gather just days after senior officials from both countries met in Thailand to discuss key security issues. Swaraj’s dialogue with Islamabad marks the third high-level contact in two weeks for both countries, a possible signal that relations between the estranged neighbouring countries are starting to thaw. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sharif maintained contact with a brief conversation at climate change talks in Paris, as well as their national security advisers meeting in Bangkok. "This is a good beginning, that the deadlock that was present has to some extent been
removed," Aziz, the prime minister's adviser on security and foreign affairs has said. Swaraj’s visit marks the first ministerial-level visit to Pakistan since the Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna travelled to Islamabad in 2012. The meeting comes after the collapse of talks in August, that raised debates over whether the nuclear- armed rivals could over-come the present animosity that have developed since their independence from British rule many decades ago. Over the past year alone, Indian and Pakistani security forces have butted heads resulting in fire exchanges and fatalities on both sides. "The countries can agree to disagree, but they will have to start talking" A former Indian foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal has said.

Overall sponsors were the Birmingham office of global accountants
Mazars, Birmingham City University and The Schools of King Edward, VI in Birmingham. Davinder’s award was sponsored by Intuit QuickBooks. Vicarage Nurseries is a soft fruit grower specialising in strawberries, and is a familyowned firm based near Evesham. The firm was established as a hobby in 1996 on a 2.6 acre site, a far cry from today’s 250 acres and annual production of 900 tonnes of strawberries. the asian today BUSINESS / PROPERTY SURVIVING THE START-UP; MY THREE TOP MUSIC BUSINESS TIPS
Ammo Talwar MBE is the CEO of Punch @punchrecords "The music business," Hunter S Thompson wrote, “is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.” I started my own career as a music lover unaware of this quote by the author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I would soon learn. It was 1997 and I was standing in a wet Birmingham backstreet with a brown envelope in one hand and a record case in the other, looking up at the shop I had rented three days earlier. My record case was packed with fresh vinyl treasures; Missy Elliott's "Sock It 2 Me", Aaliyah's "4 Page Letter", Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack" and "Mo Money Mo Problems" by the Notorious B.I.G. The brown envelope contained keys to all the shop's doors and windows on a bit of old string, along with a note from the landlord explaining that if I should ever put on all the lights at once the fuses would blow. This was Punch Records, day one. Eighteen years later and the vinyl is all sold, the fuses are indeed all blown and the shop is closed. But Punch Records is going stronger than ever; based now in Birmingham's creative village of Eastside. Here are some of tips I learned along the way which helped me to grow my business into an award-winning music development agency. TIP #1 - Don’t be a fan, be a businessman! Back in 1997 the shelves at Punch Records were piled high with my favourite vinyl. Dub plates. Rare pressings. Collectible memorabilia. The stock probably cost me more to buy than I would ever make from selling it - if I could ever see it go. So instead of a sales assistant I hired a local DJ and we span records all day. That's when I learned the real value of a shop full of fans. I made some calls, and we hosted the region's first store-based DJ competition, with a national champion in the room. Profitable partnerships with record labels and music magazines soon followed, and Punch became a hub for DJ workshops, for music promotion and for new artists to get noticed. TIP #2 - If you build it, they will come! In 2005 I started BASS - a
Plummets Supply Of Homes
More homes need to be built to prevent runaway house price growth
Autumn Statement 2015
George Osborne’s Autumn Statement will lead to changes to council tax, buy-to-let and new homes.
Key Changes Council tax: Council tax could increase by as much as £320 in the next five years as part of an attempt to raise funding for social care. The average tax on a band D property could rise by two per cent each year in addition to the existing two per cent increase town halls are already permitted to charge. Buy-to-let: An extra 3 per cent in stamp duty will be imposed on both buy-to-let landlords and people purchasing second homes. New homes: Over the next five years, £2.3 billion a year will be used to build starter homes, with developers to be provided with finances to offer a 20 per cent discount for first-time home buyers.
music festival with no venues, no acts and no budget. We'd been successfully running events and showcases for two years. It felt what Birmingham really needed was a new music festival to pull it all together. I had a vision of a season of Soul, R&B and Hip Hop in a sun-drenched urban park setting - way too expensive. When summer arrived it turned out to be drenched by torrential rain and floods. Glastonbury was nearly washed away. Artists and audiences wanted to get out of the rain, giving us the chance to offer the network of backstreet clubs and warehouses we used regularly as mainstream venues. Sponsors came on board and the press took notice. BASS celebrated ten successful years this October. TIP #3 - If you mess up, ‘fess up! In the summer of 2011 were ready to launch our first Jamaican-themed, Olympic-branded festival. This was to honour the world-beating Jamaican team who were holding preevent training in Brum. Then news reached us that the brand we used Jamaica Raw was not the one, es-
pecially within polite society in Kingston. It would soon be featured in all our promotions. Usain Bolt would be seeing this word fifty feet high and we didn't think we could outrun him. So I acted immediately and redesigned a whole stack of our promotional literature. Re-branded as Jamaica Live, the festival gave us our biggest ever one-day footfall, with highlights broadcast nationally as part of the 2012 Olympics. There is nothing more satisfying than launching your own business start-up, especially as part of an industry you are passionate about. Today we are touring some of those musicians whose records I stocked in my shop - Angie Stone, Tarrus Riley, Channel One Sound System. With the right attitude and the right team you will make it down that "long plastic hallway" and through the door at the end.
T
he scarcity of properties for sale has forced supply in the UK to fall to its lowest level since the 1970, according to Nationwide. Policymakers were recommended to move forward with plans to build hundreds of thousands of new homes, with the lender insisting that this was necessary in order to match the pace of increasing demand. Nationwide’s chief economist Robert Gardner said, “Surveyors have continued to report a dearth of properties on the market in recent months, with the number of available homes reportedly at the lowest level since the late 1970s.” Describing the current pace of construction activity as “well below” that needed to keep pace with the rate of population growth, he explained: “Only 135,000 new homes were built in England
in the 12 months to September 2015, well below the c.220,000 new households that are projected to form each year over the next decade.” As part of the Autumn Statement, George Osborne doubled the Government’s housing budget to £2 billion a year, adding that more cash will be injected into a series of programmes aiming to build 400,000 new homes across England by 2020. The Chancellor explained that the policy comes as part of a "bold plan to back families who aspire to buy their own home", with half of the planned new homes reserved for first-time buyers to be sold at 80 per cent of their market value. Mr Gardner received the news that the policymakers were “focusing on the need to increase home building” positively.
Pricey Pre-Fab Fetches Almost A Million
A
bungalow in south-east London put up for sale at auction has brought in nearly £1 million. The 1950s building in Peckham alongside the attached 0.6 acres of land was sold for £950,000 despite being in dire need of renovation and having no fitted bathroom. The dilapidated pre-fabricated “shed”,
consisting of an entrance hall, kitchen, bathroom and separate toilet, was described as being close to the “increasingly popular ‘village’ shopping amenities and cafes along Bellenden Road” by property firm Savills. Initially set with a guide price of £590,000, the price for the property, which is believed to have been empty since 2002, increased swiftly during the bidding process. Southwarm Councillor, Richard Livingstone, has said the money raised from the property’s sale will be invested into the council’s rehousing programme, which aims to construct 11,000 new buildings in the area by the 2040s. The sale of the bungalow comes at a time when the average UK home costs 10 times more than the annual income of full-time workers. According to the Office for National Statistics, the average property in Britain is valued at £284,000 while the gross annual earnings for full-time employees is £27,200.

Left Uninsured Participating in speed awareness courses may leave clueless motorists uninsured, campaigners have said. Insurers have revealed that they consider speed awareness courses the same as penalty points, leading to fears that not disclosing your participation in such courses could invalidate your policy. Speed awareness courses are favoured by motorists as a way to avoid penalty points on their licenses, despite drivers being charged anywhere between £80 and £150 for their participation. Campaigners have voiced their concerns, saying that this lulls many motorists into a false sense of security, leaving them assuming that they do not have to declare their participation to insurance providers, thereby avoiding a sharp rise to their premiums following speedingrelated offences. However, insurers commonly employ a “catch all” clause within their policies about keeping them aware regarding factors that may impact their driving. Experts have said failure to inform insurers about participating in a speed awareness course could result in cancellation of cover should an accident occur.

Pothole Crisis Hundreds of millions of pounds are to be set aside to fill in potholes on roads in Britain every year. Chancellor George Osborne has announced that £250 million of funding will be spent over the next five years for a “permanent” scheme. Local authorities failure to repair potholes on British roads has been to the detriment of cyclists and drivers alike. Over 3,400 cyclists have been killed or left seriously injured in the past year, a rise of 1 per cent from last year and an increase of a third since the mid-2000s. At least 40,000 drivers claimed compensation from councils due to damage caused by potholes in 2013, an increase from 26,000 in 2012, according to findings from research conducted last year.
McLaren’s latest addition to its sports series is the most affordable and useable McLaren ever produced and is the cheapest supercar the company has to offer. The McLaren 540C Coupé represents the latest entry-level model in the company’s new Sports Series. Being the least powerful of supercars McLaren has to offer, it currently sits below the formerly entry-level 570S. Much remains the same in the latest addition to the supercar line-up – the 540C gets the same mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine by which it produces 533bhp, or the 540PS giving the car its name, and 398lb ft of torque. The same seven-speed twin-clutcher feeds to the rear wheels, with a 0.3s increase from the 570S’s 3.2 seconds to record a 0-62mph time of 3.5s. The 540C tops out at 199mph whilst the 570S reaches a top speed of 204mph. Also remaining the same as the 570S is the ‘brake-steer’ system. Noticeable build differences between the 570S and the 540C model include the ‘MonoCell’ carbon tub which, though
remains primarily the same, has been redesigned to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. The 540C has aluminium body panels, reducing the weight by 2kg from the 570S’s 1313kg and sees a 150kg weight reduction from the next lightest sports car, the Audi R8. Revisions have also been made to the 570S’s damper tuning, allowing a more user-friendly and ‘daily driver’ focus, with adaptive damping consisting of three settings of normal, sport and track. New additions to the model also include aeroblades below the front bumper, a rear diffuser, spoiler and a choice of two alloy wheels in silver or with a ‘stealth’ finish. Unlike the other ‘C’ suffixed models in the McLaren’s range, which are available solely in Asia, the 540C is available for purchase globally and deliveries are set for early 2016. Being the least powerful car in the company’s supercar line-up, the 540C also sees a significant price drop. Priced from £126,000, it marks out a £17k saving from the more powerful 570S, and brings McLaren in line with the more ‘mainstream’ Audi R8 and Porsche 911.
Government to make exaggerated or fraudulent whiplash claims less rewarding George Osborne has unveiled plans to end motorists’ rights to cash compensation for minor whiplash injuries. The Chancellor has said the Government will seek to axe cash claims completely, aiming to make it more difficult for people to get compensation by making exaggerated or fraudulent whiplash claims. The Government estimates that such claims cost the insurance industry £2 billion a year, approximated at £90 per policy, which it considers to be “out of all
proportion to any genuine injury suffered”. Findings from recent research by the AA show that 11 per cent of motorists "saw nothing wrong in claiming for an injury following a collision caused by someone else, even if no injury was suffered". Sources from the motoring industry have said that once the scheme is put into practice, any individual left suffering with an ailment that could be resolved within three to six months would likely be unsuccessful in their compensation claim.

ston Villa defender, Easah Suliman, has said he was delighted to have been named Young Player of the Year at the 3rd annual Asian Football Awards. The awards, which were held at Wembley Stadium last month and hosted by Noreen Khan of the BBC Asian Network and Sky Sport News reporter Dharmesh Sheth, was held to recognise the achievements of British Asians in English football. Picking up his award, the 17-year-old said "I feel very honoured and privileged to have been invited to such a prestigious event. Neil Taylor is a massive inspiration for what he has achieved with Wales and Swansea. If I can emulate him, I'll have a decent career." Suliman has been with Villa since the age of eight and recently played for England at the U17 World Cup becoming the first player with Pakistani heritage to captain a Three Lions side. This year special emphasis was placed on grassroots football and those who work behind the scenes to champion the cause.
Founder of the Asian Football Awards, Baljit Rihal said: “Our hope this that these awards will once again raise the Asians in football debate in the mainstream media and that influential organisations make an intensive effort to rectify the longstanding imbalance. “There is still much work to be done as progress in increasing reputation across the industry has been far too slow.” FA director of participation and development Kelly Simmons, who was on hand to present an award added: “The awards recognise both individual Asians excelling in roles in football and also good practice from organisations addressing under representation. "I’m delighted that among the winners were individuals supported by The FA via the equality and participation teams." Other winners on the night included former

West Ham United Ladies’ Indian international goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan was named the 2015 Woman in Football winner. Chauhan attracted plenty of mainstream publicity both in the UK and India when she joined the Hammers back in August as she became the first Indian woman to feature at FA Women’s Premier League level in England. Now, just over three months later and Chauhan won the Woman in Football award at the third annual Asian Football Awards and she was extremely thankful to everyone that made it possible. “It’s a huge honour for me and I’d like to thank the Asian Football Awards for considering me for this award,” said Chauhan. “Also to all the supporters that voted for me and, of course, to West Ham United for promoting this nomination as it really helped me make it into the final list.” The 22-year-old beat off competition for the award from Tanvie Hans and Monica Sharma of Fulham FC Ladies and London Bari LFC captain Sabah Mahmoud and is hoping that her success will help towards the next generation of female footballers back in India.
Swans and Wales defender Neil Taylor was named Asian Player of the Year for the second time. Taylor, whose mother is from Kolkata in India, was presented with the award at the special ceremony at Wembley. It was the third Asian Football Awards Dinner which recognises the achievements of British Asians in football. Taylor, who also helped Wales reach the Euro 2016 Finals, picked up the award for the first time in 2013. “It’s a great feeling to win this award,’’ declared Taylor. “It means a lot to me and hopefully Asian football flourishes throughout the years. “My advice to any young aspiring player is to sacrifice. You have to be willing to sacrifice and follow your own path of where you want go, where you want to be and what you want to achieve. You also need to have people who are willing to go on that journey with you. Whatever background you are from, it doesn't matter. You can make it to the top. Hopefully this can inspire the next generation of footballers.”

BOXING CLEVER Meet Simran Kaur – Ambassador for the Asian Sports Foundation
T
he Asian Sports Fo u n d a t i o n (ASF) is a UK based not-for-profit organisation (NGO), campaigning for equality and inclusion for Asian communities in Sport. The organisation’s key aims are to encourage Asians to proactively take up sports and to understand the potential and advantages of participation – be it at a local community level, regional or if you’re really good, at a national level. Historically we know that the Asian community may not have embraced all sports with the same passion they have for cricket, but hopefully things are changing as we start to see young blood enter different sporting arenas. To help share its positive messages and encourage young people (and their families) to take up sports, the Asian Sports Foundation has enlisted the support of some inspirational young role models who are ambassadors for the Foundation. Today we meet one of their youngest recruits… making a real name for herself and definitely knocking down a few stereotypes! Simran Kaur first became interested in boxing at the age of 14, when she started to keep fit to lose weight. She started boxing training and quickly realised she had a talent. Although she has only been boxing for two years now, she is already boxing to a very high standard and is affiliated with
Merridale Boxing Club in Wolverhampton, Currently National Schoolgirl champion, she has recently been selected to attend an England training camp which will hopefully be the start of a promising boxing future. There is no doubt that Simran is truly committed to the sport - she trains six days a week and hopes that her commitment and hard work will pay off so she can fulfil her current ambition to represent Great Britain in the 2020 Olympic Games. But it hasn’t and won’t be easy – Simran says: “I couldn’t do any of this without the support of my family. Apart from the emotional support and encouragement, there is a real physical and financial demand they have to meet to help me achieve my dreams – from taking time off work to the real costs of national and international travel to take part in contests, to the practical stuff like kit – it all adds up.” Part of the ASF’s role is to help fund projects and individuals to fulfil their dreams and ambitions through fundraising initiatives and donations. Simran says of her support of the ASF: “I hope that by being an ambassador I am able to encourage more Asian girls to take part in sports and believe in themselves – and to show the community that there is no sport that we can’t take part in and enjoy – it would be great to see more Asians in the boxing ring for a start!"

TEAM SPIRIT Getting the taste of that winning habit is one thing but holding on to it is quite another
Kohli Lauds His Spin Trio in Series Win
T
he Indian Cricket team has wrapped up an historic test series win inside three days and have taken the series 3-0 with the final Test to go. They have not only defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the world, but have also ended their streak of 16 unbeaten away Test series. T h e pillars of this victory have been the Indian spinners, who have taken 47 of the 50 South African wickets to fall in the series so far. Captain, Virat Kohli, is understandably thankful to have them by his side. “Having Ashwin, Mishra and Jadeja in the team is a big plus,” captain Virat Kohli said. “Two out of the three guys are very consistent and Amit Mishra, for a leg-spinner, is very
economical, which is not a regular sight. He is someone who knows his bowling, his variations and where to pitch the ball. It’s a delight to have all three in the squad. “I am really happy for Jadeja because he is making a comeback and the way he has bowled really well. He has looked confident with the bat as well, and it shows that if you go back to first-class cricket and you work hard to come up the right way again, things do fall in place,” he said. Of all the three spinners, Ashwin has, by far, been the best, with 24 wickets under his belt already. Kohli's praise for him had no bounds. “These kind of consistent performances show that he is a champion bowler, the mental strength he has and the knowledge of the game that he has.” While Ashwin and Jadeja have taken the bulk of the wickets, the support they have received from Mishra and Ishant Sharma has been vital for India as a bowling unit, with Mishra often coming in and giving
his captain that crucial wicket whenever a partnership threatened to blossom. In the fourth innings in Nagpur, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis put on a resolute show with a 72-run partnership and denied India a wicket for 46.2 overs. Mishra broke the partnership and dismissed both batsmen inside six balls. As the spinners made merry, Sharma kept to fielding for most of the match. But when the wickets didn’t come easily, he bent his back and bowled with pace, accuracy and reverse swing. In his 15 overs in the fourth innings, he gave away only 20 runs, allowing the spinners to maintain the pressure. While the bowlers got the captain’s accolades, the Indian batsmen’s lack of application on tough wickets remains a concern. “We, as a batting unit – and I said this in Mohali as well – haven’t applied ourselves properly. One or two batsmen have, but I think to play well consistently you have to apply as a batsman,” Kohli added.
“Having Ashwin, Mishra and Jadeja in the team is a big plus,”
