INSIDE THIS ISSUE NEWS ROUND UP
Born 5 weeks premature and diagnosed with ARPKD, Anaya desperately needs a kidney transplat
CORSA CANNIBALS PG 6 Anaya Kandola is 20 months old, lives in Newcastle. Born 5 weeks premature and diagnosed with ARPKD (Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease ) just a couple of days before she arrived and her only and best chance of survival is a kidney transplant . ARPKD caused Anaya to be born with an abnormal liver and two enlarged polycystic kidneys which led to her lungs being underdeveloped and her left side of her heart to be muscular known as HCM due to high blood pressure. Her immune system is so weak and her kidneys were removed soon after birth. She was put on dialysis which means she is dependent on a machine to clean her bloods. She requires 10-12 hours of dialysis every day and sometimes it’s so difficult to dialyse her
when her blood pressure drops below 20 (hypotensive). Her only and best chance of survival is a kidney transplant. Doctors have now started talking about ‘working up’ to transplant for Anaya which takes 4 to 6 months so we’re hoping by her 2nd birthday she will get a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, her parents are no longer a kidney donor match due to the number of blood transfusions she has needed and antibodies created. Waiting to get the call for a kidney match can take years and sadly, we may never receive that call to hospital for her transplant and she will die due to a shortage of Asian people willing to donate their organs. Although kidney donation can come from any race, however for successful transplant Blood and tissue type need to match.

The criteria for donating a kidney for Anaya; • Has to be from Blood Group B or O (doesn’t matter about positives and negatives) • Minimum age for Donor should be 30 and max 40 years above Anaya’s age (which will be 42 at the time) • BMI 30 or below • Generally fit and healthy with no current health conditions (i.e high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV) • You cannot donate if you have Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or Cancer that has spread in the last 12 months. • It is advised not to donate if you’re wanting to start a family as can cause problems during pregnancy. Anaya's parents Amrik & Joety added: ‘We understand people’s anxieties about organ donation, we’ve shared them too but we can’t deny the fact that a lot of people are relying on organs to survive. We urge people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor register, tell your loved ones
that you have and have that conversation with people you love as often we assume they would’ve mentioned it. Knowing you can save a life may change their minds, we together as a community need to raise awareness. We need to be the change we want to see, it should not take a heart wrenching situation like Anaya’s to wake us up about the importance of organ donation - Let’s be proactive and reduce the need for families to campaign by having more donors from different ethnicities on the list’ Anaya at present has no kidneys, we urgently need to find her one as the longer we leave it more complications arise making it hard to find a match. You can be a living donor as Anaya needs only one kidney, most of us have two and only need one to survive. Help us find a kidney match for Anaya, if you meet the criteria and would like to get tested please email us: hope4anaya@gmail.com’ If you want to help save Anaya by becoming a Living Kidney Donor, please get in touch Hope4Anaya@gmail.com @Hope4Anaya
Proposal for Birmingham's clean air zone Proposed daily charges for non-complaint vehicles are: Buses and Coaches £50 - £100 Lorries / HGVs £50 - £100 Taxis and private hire cars £6 - £12.50 Private cars £6 - £12.50
P
lans to charge highpolluting cars, lorries, vans and buses to enter Birmingham City Council have been the subject of an intense debate since they were first publicised at the end of June. Under the plans permitted from Birmingham City Council, owners of higher polluting vehicles entering the city centre, within the A4540 middle ring road, will be charged from January 2020. The aim is to discourage motorists and reduce the dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution within the city centre. Consultation is due to close on Friday, August 17, after which a final plan will be drawn up and sent to the Government Department Here is all you need to know about the clean air zone. The legal safe limit for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the air is 40 micrograms per cubic metre, but levels in many streets in Birmingham, such as Great Charles Street Queensway, are much higher than that. This contributes to poor health making life
unhealthier for those with a range of respiratory conditions such as asthma and cutting short lives. Exposure to the polluted air is a particular problem for children whose lungs are still developing. The main cause of NO2 are fumes from diesel and petrol engines. As a result the Government has given five cities, including Birmingham, until September 2018 to draw up plans for a clean air zone. The plan was eventually revealed on June 26 and put out to consultation. This closes on August 17. Polluting cars entering the city centre area within the A4540 Middle Ring Road will be charged. London's congestion charge operates only during weekdays - from 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday - so many assumed Birmingham would be the same. But the city council is consulting over a 24 hoursa-day, seven days a week, charge as pollution is not affected by the time of day or week. Unlike a congestion charge, which is applied to all
vehicles, this clean air zone charge targets the highest polluting vehicles. Electric and hybrid vehicles will not be charges. Broadly speaking this means petrol cars made after 2006 and diesel cars manufactured since 2015. A ring of warning signs and automatic number plate recognition, ANPR cameras
will be set up around the A4540 to record all traffic driving into the city centre. Vehicle owners will then have to pay via a website or telephone line, similar to the London congestion charge. Proposed daily charges for non-complaint vehicles are: Buses and Coaches £50 £100 Lorries / HGVs £50 - £100
Taxis and private hire cars £6 - £12.50 Private cars £6 - £12.50 A final figure will be announced in September. There have been dozens of articles, an advertising campaign, social media promotions and roadside warning signs alerting people to the proposals since they were first revealed at the end of June.

Hagley Road closes after a second serious crash NEWS
T
he Hagley Road was closed today for a second time after another serious collision. Chief Inspector Jack Hadley had established that the whole road was closed from Five Ways to the Plough and Harrow at around 7pm. West Midlands Police shut the popular commuter route into the city, following the crash shortly after it had reopened from an earlier incident between a pedestrian and a lorry. It was the second time the emergency services had rushed to the scene of a serious incident on Monday afternoon. Just minutes earlier the
road had cleared after a crash which left a man with serious injuries. An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene following a pedestrian that was hit by a lorry at the Kings Head Pub junction, on Hagley Road, Bearwood, at 1.40pm. Chief Inspector Jack Hadley tweeted: "officers are now dealing with a second RTC on the Hagley Road. The entire road is closed from Five Ways to the Plough & Harrrow PH. "Definitely completely avoid the area as the traffic is horrendous!!" We have contacted the emergency services for more
information regarding the latest incident. Images taken at the scene earlier this evening show a vehicle on top of another, as emergency crews worked at the scene. West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "A pedestrian has been taken to a major trauma centre in a critical condition after a collision with a light goods vehicle. "The incident happened at about 1.40pm on Hagley Road in the Harborne area of Birmingham "An ambulance that was transporting a patient to hospital came across the incident shortly after it had happened. A second
ambulance, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a doctor on board were also sent to the scene. "When ambulance crews arrived, they found a middleaged man who had suffered very significant injuries. "The man was treated at the scene by ambulance staff. He was immobilised before being anaesthetised by the doctor and was then taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham."

The Environment Agency relocation from Solihull to Jewellery Quarter office
A Birmingham office building is fully let after a new deal was settled with the Environment Agency, transferring staff from their former base in Solihull town centre. The Government agency is leasing 27,000 sq ft at Aqua House in Lionel Street, in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. The deal was finalised by property agency GVA on behalf of proprietor the Canal & River Trust. The letting, which has been fortified on a ten-year term, will see the Environment Agency take space across the top three floors of the building after relocating its team from Solihull town centre. It is said that the move was being determined by the need to
be close to the new government hub at Arena Central in Broad Street and the pending conversion of its former office building into a residential structure. Charles Toogood, head of the Midlands offices team at GVA, said: "Aqua House provides the perfect space for the Environment Agency, just a stone's throw from the city's commercial heartland of Colmore Row. "The Environment Agency proved to be the perfect partner as we looked to let the remaining space at Aqua House. "To get one tenant for all three floors was ideal, especially when the occupier presents a secure, low risk tenant for the landlord."
Handsworth attack knife-point robbery three suspects arrested 6
SEPTEMBER 2018
Three suspects have been arrested after a petrifying knife-point robbery in Handsworth, Birmingham. The victims were attacked early on Sunday morning. Officers had then rushed to the scene on Sunday morning - August 12th and quickly arrested three people. The victims were threatened by the attackers with a knife in the street at
around 7.20am. Within minutes, police were at the scene and now have the suspects in the 'cells'. Chief Inspector Jack Hadley wrote on Twitter at 8am on Sunday morning: "Well we've had a busy start. "Responded to a report of a knife robbery in Handsworth at 0720hrs, got there within minutes and arrested three suspects.
"The victims are now safe and the suspects are off to the cells! Great start to the day!!" Meanwhile, in Wolverhampton city centre officers on patrol had a shock detection when a wanted offender was caught carrying a huge machete down his trousers. Wolverhampton City Police shared the dramatic images of the terrifying
12inch weapon after they had detained it on Sunday night. In a tweet posted around 9pm, the officers urged other offenders to 'bin the knife'. They wrote: "Whilst officers were on patrol in the city centre this evening they spotted a wanted man. "Look at what was down his trousers. #stopknifecrime #bintheknife."

The 'Corsa Cannibals' crimewave
Motorists are being cautioned of a new crime trend in which specific cars are targeted by professed 'Corsa Cannibals'. Thieves are alleged to be stripping bonnets from Vauxhall Corsas across the region - with the West Midlands now gripped by the national crimewave In some cases, they reportedly smash the passenger side window to gain access to the bonnet before tearing it off and making off with it. It can take less than ten minutes to do and has triggered serious anxiety to owners through the region. The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "There is a new crime hitting the Midlands. It happened to me and it's happening all the time and becoming more common. "Thieves strip the whole front on Corsas and Fiestas in particular by breaking the passenger window to pop the bonnet. It can take less than ten minutes to do." She added that she has since been slapped with a £400 excess bill to pay to fix her pride and joy. "The stress and inconvenience it's caused is unreal and I'm left footing the excess £400 bill and been without a car for three days," she explained. "It's known online as Corsa cannibals. I think the more people that are aware, we can stop these vile people." A statement from West Midlands Police read: "Officers are investigating a theft after a car bonnet and number plates

When it comes to business start-ups in Britain, London may lead the pack, but the latest study from Instant Offices reveals the UK’s other major cities are making a substantial contribution to entrepreneurialism in the UK. Instant’s Entrepreneurial Index ranks the UK’s leading cities by analysing Companies House data and comparing average population in each city with
the number of businesses launched there year on year. And this year, Birmingham has stormed to the top of the league for start-ups. London leads in the for total number of start-ups, as would be expected with being the capital, with 145,993 businesses launched in 2017. But, on a pro rata basis, Birmingham surpasses the capital as the Most Entrepreneurial UK City in 2018 with its impressive start-up to population ratio. With significant growth over the past few years, Birmingham’s ability to attract and support earlystage businesses is credited
to its world-class support networks, accelerator schemes and significant infrastructure investment. The completion of HS2 is set to transform the West Midlands, and Birmingham’s sizeable metropolitan economy is expected to see considerable benefits to boost growth. As more organisations opt for responsive ways of working, the flex office market has seen explosive growth across UK regions, and interest in cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool is at an alltime high. Centre growth was up 13%
were stolen from a Vauxhall Corsa that was parked in Shard End on Wednesday night (1 August). "The theft took place sometime between 12.05am and 8.30am. The craze is believed to have started in 2013 in Bedfordshire when parts were removed from over 500 Corsas. A full statement from the vehicle brand read: "There are no security or design issues with our bestselling Vauxhall Corsa. "The Corsa has been a huge sales success since it was launched over 25 years ago, so there are proportionally more on the road than other less popular models. "This is wanton vandalism, if a thief is determined enough they can steal parts from any make of car." Guidance from Inspector Mel Sutherland urged Corsa drivers to change the way they park their vehicle to deter criminals. She urged drivers to park the front end of their car in a way that would prove inaccessible to thieves. She said: “I would always advise people to check and check again that their vehicle is locked and secure, however given that this type of crime is very specific and unusual I would also encourage people to be extra vigilant and to consider where they are parking their cars. "If you have a garage then try and use it or park your car as close to the garage door as possible to prevent thieves getting to the front end of the vehicle to remove it.
Birmingham top amongst the UK’s leading cities with over 21,000 companies launched this year
last year, ranking fourth after Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds at 23%, 17% and 15% respectively. John Williams, Head of Marketing and Research at Instant, said: “While majority of demand still comes from companies looking for flexible office requirements for smaller teams, our data reveals that larger, corporate occupiers are also looking for flexible space in what is proving to be a very competitive market in Birmingham.” Birmingham has a regular workstation rate of £264 and offers a wide variety of office space.

A historic Grade II listed pub is Oldbury Viaduct set to become new KFC drive Roadworks on through restaurant M5 at J1 to J2 is A to be extended
historic landmark, former pub could be getting a complete conversion as a drive through KFC restaurant. The King George V in Longridge has been unoccupied for over a year. The King George V pub has mounted at the junction of Tessall Lane and Bristol Road in Longbridge since 1935 and is Grade II listed. It was renovated first into the Emerald Chinese restaurant in 2000, and then later became the King Kahn Indian restaurant and then the Old King George Balti House before being closed down in 2017. But with new plans it could now see it serving southern fried chicken in the near future. Last year a series of planning applications to turn it into a care home or apartment block fell flat and now a KFC operator has come forward with a £2.5 million investment in the building. The plans, from Splendid Hospitality Ltd, would see the pub's ground floor renovated as a restaurant and take away with a drive
through facility enclosed. The car park will be arranged for the drive through service and rear access for delivery vehicles. The company, in a announcement to the city council contends that this is only a modest change to the pub's previous use as a restaurant. It says: "As part of its expansion proposals Splendid has identified a market demand for a KFC within the wider area and have secured this site as an opportunity to meet that demand. "It is proposed, through this application, to bring the King George V former
public house in Longbridge back into active use as a KFC restaurant with associated drive through." And lists numerous benefits for the community including bringing a prominent empty building back into use, preserving the historic building and guarding it from decay and providing a restaurant at a busy location, in Longbridge. It adds that about 60 new full and part time jobs will be created and that the proposed investment totals about £2.5 million. Residents have until September 9 to comment on the proposals. The application must be decided by September 27.
The Roadworks on the M5 at Oldbury Viaduct are to be extended for six months - because of the recent heatwave. Scorching temperatures are being blamed for delaying the completion of roadworks at Oldbury Viaduct until next spring. Work commenced in January 2017 and had been due for completion this October. The news will not be applauded by motorists who've had to tolerate long delays due to lane closures and speed restrictions of 30mph on that stretch. The project is essential because the concrete on the motorway and viaduct is deteriorating and is the largest project of its kind
ever carried out in Britain. There are also problems with flooding and drainage during periods of heavy rain, and that will also have to be revamped. A spokesman for Highways England said one of the main reasons for the delay was the scorching temperatures we've experienced this summer. "The weather has slowed us down in that waterproofing cannot be applied in temperatures of 30C or above," he said. "In recent weeks the surface temperature on the viaduct has been around 40C in the daytime, so waterproofing had to be applied overnight." Another delay was caused by finding more repairs than they originally thought.
"We were only able to fully assess the condition of the southbound carriageway once the works had started and we'd removed the road surface and waterproofing layer," he said. "We found a higher number of individual repairs than we had anticipated - over 6,000 were needed - around 4.500 more than anticipated." The Highways England spokesman said: “The work we are doing to repair the M5 Oldbury Viaduct is absolutely essential if drivers are to continue using it for years to come. "We’re committed to completing the work as quickly and as safely as possible and we’re doing all we can to reduce disruption to motorists, businesses and residents.”

Kings Heath has become a cool and bohemian part of Birmingham SEPTEMBER 2018
10
K
ings Heath has perhaps relished in the shadows of Moseley's long standing reputation as a cool and bohemian part of Birmingham. But this suburb, like Moseley, also has a stunning independent scene, with unique artisan cafes, shops and restaurants. There is one road in particular that is giving Kings Heath major admiration. It doesn't have an attractive village feel that's for sure, but does have lots of down to earth charm. The scenic York Road off Kings Heath High Street, is known for housing some cool independents and two new arrivals have added to its charm. It has welcomed a cool new addition The Juke, a bar with a musical twist which opened in the cafe’s former premises in July. The Juke offers Brummies
a distinctive drinking experience. It has a 30-yearold jukebox imported from Chicago - playing 7 inch records from the 50s, 60s & 70s alongside more contemporary artists. The Juke, a smart little bar with a striking red interior. The focal point is the jukebox - a Rock-Ola Regis 120 jukebox that has spent over 30 years in bars across the Chicago tri-state area of the USA. This gives this place its unique selling point - everyone in the bar can play DJ for the night. The Juke's young owners, Thomas Mee and Chelsie Eason told us: “We always thought it would be brilliant to open a bar with a proper old fashioned jukebox. I don’t think there is anywhere else in the West Midlands that has that. "When we heard Cherry Reds was available we knew
NEWS
WWW.THEASIANTODAY.COM
it was perfect. We found a company in the US that loans classic jukeboxes to rent us this beauty. "To buy a Rock-Ola Regis 120 jukebox would have cost us over £10,000. Our jukebox came with lots of classic records such as The Wanderer by Dion - ones you’d expect to hear in a traditional jukebox." “We also bought a lot of records from Polar Bear Records up the road. We wanted to open in Kings Heath because of the incredible musical history here . But it’s been wonderful to see how having the jukebox has encouraged a community atmosphere. “We’ve seen people who don’t know each other, strike up a conversation over the jukebox about what songs they want play and then later say good bye to each other as friends.
“You can line up as many records as you like on the jukebox - for free and we change the music selection changes every Friday. We’ll aways aim to an eclectic mix - a bit of Whitney Houston, The Beatles and the Beastie Boys.” The Juke also has an open kitchen at the front of the bar with rotating foodie residencies. Hare and Hounds pub in Kings Heath is Perhaps one of Birmingham's most famous independent live music venues, this grade II listed 111-year-old pub is a great place to see up and coming bands. Convening on the corner of Kings Heath High Street and York Road, it has hosted gigs from the likes of Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran and it was of course the location of UB40's first gig way back in 1979.
Extension plans submitted for Birmingham Airport
The extension of the Airport would see the creation of new food and retail outlets, seating and baggage areas Birmingham Airport has maintained that plans to expand its current premises will help deal with an increasing volume of passengers. A planning application for an infill extension between the existing short pier and main terminal building would see the formation of new food and retail outlets. The expansion would also provide space for additional seating, toilets and baggage areas. In its planning statement, the airport said: "While the application would not, when viewed on its own, result in any significant economic impact on the regional economy, it would contribute towards the airport’s main goal, which is to provide an enhanced passenger experience and become the best regional airport in Europe.
"In order to deliver a high standard of service and to keep pace with growth in demand, the departure lounge will need to be increased via an infill extension." The document authorises that the extension proposed would be within the current boundaries of the airport site and argues it would be in keeping with the height and appearance of the existing terminal. Passenger numbers have seen a dramatic escalation in the past ten years or so, from 9.2 million in 2007 to almost 13 million last year. This month's application, likely to be considered by borough councillors later this year, is the latest to be presented for the site. Other notable applications in the past few decades include the expansion of terminal facilities, given the green light in 1996, and the extension to the runway, which was rubber-stamped by Solihull's planning committee nine years ago.

A huge £150m expansion for the Midland Metro fleet
OUR PRICES ARE GOOD BUT OUR WORK IS BETTER
It comes as part of a wider £3.4 billion investment into West Midlands transport
Transport chiefs are planning a £150 million development of the Midland Metro network by enhancing up to 50 new batterypowered trams to the taskforce. Extensions to the network are either intended or already under way in Birmingham city centre, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Solihull, connecting passengers to areas such as Edgbaston, the Merry Hill centre and the airport. The battery technology removes the need for a complete dependence on overhead electrical wires as is currently the case and allows trams to switch instantly to battery power on sections of the track where wires cannot be built, such as under Five Ways island in Edgbaston. TfWM is primarily planning to purchase 18 of the new battery-powered trams, with the option to buy a further
32 in future, and is looking for suppliers with tested fleets already in operation elsewhere in the world. It comes as part of a wider £3.4 billion investment into West Midlands transport over the next decade including new suburban rail lines, cycle routes and motorway improvements, to help with the transport system in Birmingham. There are 21 'Urbos 3' model trams currently operating on the Midland Metro and the first of those to be retro-fitted with batteries was launched into operation in April - believed to be a UK first. The other 20 trams will now also be retro-fitted in a rolling programme designed to ensure passenger services remain unaffected. Coun Roger Lawrence, transport chief from the West Midlands Combined Authority, said: "The West

Midlands is leading the way on sustainable public transport in this country. "We launched the UK's first battery-powered tram earlier this year and now we're adding more to the network. "We had to wait for the technology to catch up with our ambition so we will retrofit all our existing trams with batteries too. "Eventually, this tender could treble the amount of trams operating on our network - potentially increasing our regional fleet from 21 to 71 trams meaning more services and more stops as we extend the tram network for passengers across the West Midlands." The contract is due to be awarded in spring 2019 which will be followed by a two-year design and development procedure. The first of the new trams is estimated to be in action by summer 2021.

annon Hill Park saw the return of Big Johns Birmingham Mela and even though the weather decided to pour it didn’t stop the crowds. Now in it’s 18th year with a great line-up of artists and activities for all the family, the mela still managed to pull in crowds despite the wet conditions, thankfully it did dry up for the mela goers just after midday. Speaking to some of the public, they said they always look forward to the Big John’s Mela spectacular family event and would have attended even it was snowing. The crowds were in joyous high spirits, showing the importance of the Big John’s Birmingham Mela to local communities. British Asian actor and comedian Mani Liaqat and BBC Asian Network’s Noreen Khan hosted this year’s festivities. Lord Mayor of Birmingham Cllr Yvonne Mosquito opened the event with speeches from Midland Metro Mayor Andy Street and other councillors. This year’s acts included singers Rubayyat Jahan, Zac Knight, Imran Khan as well as singer and dancer Bambi Bains, Britain’s Got Talent Signature with headline performer Abrar Ul Haq who got the crowd literally singing in the rain. As well as the entertainment, there were
food courts and stalls selling arts and crafts, clothing and jewellery. There were additional sports activities organised by Birmingham Youth Sports Academy which saw local councillors and business owners challenging the BYSA coaches in a game of football. It was great to see various community members coming together in the spirit of togetherness & cohesion. Well done to the organisers Babar Saddiq & Jahangir Saddiq. Babar said: “ Big Johns Birmingham Mela is now a very important event in the Birmingham Community event calendar. It shows today that despite the weather people have turned up in their thousands to be part of this annual free community day out. The event now in its fifth year since Big Johns have been organising and hosting the event has grown in size and numbers and attracts people from all diverse communities. The Mela promotes community cohesion and diversity and encourages people from all ethnic backgrounds to live work and celebrate together” “Big Johns Birmingham Mela would liked to thank all Partners, Sponsors and Stall holders who took part in the event, without whom this community event would not be possible”

Secondary School Tips September is the start of the new year term and students who are starting year 7 it does become a scary time going to a big school. •Induction days-Lots of schools organise induction days or social events before term starts. Go along, get to know a few people and check out who is in your class. They may not turn out to be your new BFFs, but knowing a face in the crowd is a good feeling. •Buy an alarm clock-Most secondary schools start at 8.30am so if you have a long journey, you may have an early start. •Breakfast-Always eat some breakfast, even if you feel nervous. It’s a long time until lunch.
•Tie-Put in plenty of practice at tying your tie. You’ll need to be able to do it at speed and under pressure (ie, after PE). Practise putting it on and taking it off without undoing it. •Uniform- If you’re wearing a blazer for the first time, don’t let your mum buy it too big. You will need to use your hands. •Travelling to school-Work out your route to school, whether you’re walking or taking public transport. Practise until you’re confident and time yourself. Also, make sure you have an alternative route in case of problems with transport or people you want to avoid. If it helps, draw a map. •School Bag- Buy a very

big, very strong bag. You will have loads to carry. And that’s not counting the days when you’ll have your PE kit. •School Lockers-Most schools offer lockers and some are with chargeable. •Breaks-Don’t call it ‘playtime’ – it’s ‘break’ now. •Lunch Money- Work out how you’ll be paying for your lunch – if it’s a card or fingerprint system, make sure you’re topped up for your first day. •School Policy- Find out your new school’s policy on mobile phones, preferably before yours goes off in the middle of geography. •Sports-PE, time is always precious, so for boys, go for adjustable waist trousers – there’s no time to be fiddling
with a belt. If PE is first period, you may be able to wear your shorts under your trousers for a quick change •Orgnaised-If you’re given a student diary or planner, use it to write down your homework – when there is so much going on, it’s easy to forget. •Timetable-Go through your timetable and pack your bag the night before – there’s never time in the morning to find your maths book. •Relax and try to enjoy it-in no time at all, it’ll seem like you’ve been there forever. And this time next year, you’ll be showing the new intake around the school.

Other medical offers include 5 for Dentistry and 1 for Veterinary Medicine. Highest on the list of course places for the professions was Law, with an amazing 24 offers. As usual places on the wide range of business related courses are overall the most popular with 67 offers. Mark Shingleton, MPW College Principal said: “I am extremely pleased with very impressive number of offers for Medicine and Law. I have seen a rise in the number of acceptances we have had for these two subjects over the past three years.’’ He continued: ‘’There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that Russell Group universities do not accept retake students. At least 90% of our retake
students receive offers from these universities. They are now accepted on more competitive courses such as medicine and dentistry and we have an excellent track record in obtaining places on such competitive courses for retake students.’’ The number of students wanting to attend university continues to grow and this year MPW increased its numbers again. Mark added: ‘’the overwhelming majority of students wish to attend university but we have noticed increased interest in the apprenticeship schemes. A minority of students could benefit from studying work-based degree courses.’’ When asked whether the £9,250 maximum fees plus accommodation has made university unreachable for many families Mark said: ’’The trend for studying near to home has been developing for several years. This is particularly relevant in cities like Birmingham which provides access to two leading Russell Group universities (Birmingham and Warwick) and Aston University with its new medical school, which continues to grow in statute.’’

British Airways Accused of Racism After Kicking Family off Flight British Airways have fallen into a racism row after an Indian family were ordered of a flight in London because their three-year-old son was crying. AP Patak claims a BA crew member shouted at his son and used 'racist remarks', before ordering them and another Indian family sat behind them off the plane. The incident allegedly happened on July 23 shortly before take-off at London City Airport on a flight destined for Berlin. Mr Patak, who works for the Indian government, has since complained to Indian Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu and outlined what he called 'humiliation and racial behaviour' in a fiery letter. Mr Patak claims his son had become uncomfortable and started crying after the seatbelt had been fastened, and his wife then picked him up despite the sign being on. He writes: 'My son felt uncomfortable and started crying. My wife managed to comfort him by taking him in her arms. 'A male crew member approached us and started shouting, scolded my son to go to his seat. My son got terrified and started crying even more.' 'Another Indian family sitting behind us offered the child some biscuits to console him and my wife again put the boy on his designated seat and fastened the seat belt even though he kept on crying. The aircraft then started taxiing to the runway.' The same crew member returned and shouted at my son that "you bloody keep quiet otherwise you will be thrown out of the window" and we would be offloaded. We were petrified.' Mr Patak claims the plane then returned to the terminal and security personnel were called to remove the family and the family in the row behind them from the aircraft. 'I would like to reiterate and emphasise that the said crew member made racist remarks and used hatred words like "bloody" about the Indians which is highly undesirable and contumacious to the respect of myself and my nation,' Mr Patak added. A British Airways spokesperson said: 'It is a safety requirement for all airlines that passengers are seated and have their seatbelt fastened for take-off. 'We take such claims like this extremely seriously and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. 'We are investigating the complaint and will liaise with our customer.'

Coconut Oil Tips for Hair, Face and Body
Coconut oil is a multi-tasking beauty product that is good for the skin and the hair. Hair Deep-condition your strands overnight. There are reasons why many conditioners contain coconut oil: It's better able to penetrate hair (and prevent protein loss) than mineral and sunflower oil, according to research. Tame frizz You can help your frizzy, flyaway strands with just a bit of coconut oil to leave your hair looking smooth and polished. As an alternative to straight oil, you can also use products like this coconut oil hair serum that will nourish your hair while also protecting it from heat-styling tools. Minimize dandruff Dandruff is a common scalp condition you can minimise the problem with an ultra-moisturizing coconut oil treatment: Heat 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil on the stove over a low flame. Once it liquifies, immediately remove it from the stove, so it doesn’t become too hot. Then, massage the oil into your scalp. Face
Clean your face Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, antifungal, moisturizing and, according to research, great for atopic dermatitis, many women swear by its use as a night-time moisturizer for their face. Remove eye makeup Coconut oil is a good makeup remover and even works on waterproof mascara. Put a little on a cotton ball and gently sweep it over your eyes. The oil does a great job breaking down waxy, inky eye makeup, and leaves the delicate area hydrated, too. Highlight your cheeks Many highlighting products contain coconut oil. Simply sweep a small amount of organic coconut oil on top of makeup giving you a glow. Body Moisturize your body If you have really dry skin, coconut oil can be your saviour. It speeds the healing process of the skin, reduces water retention and boosts hydration. Nourish cracked cuticles Massaging coconut oil into your cuticles and the skin around your nails will help with moisturising and conditioning.

BUSINESS
We need young people who are employable at 16 Today the British Chambers of Commerce have impressed upon the government to ensure that the current apprenticeship frameworks are fit for purpose for small and medium sized businesses (SME). According to a statistical analysis of business in the UK
conducted for a House of Commons briefing paper in November 2016, there are 5.5 million businesses in the UK of which 24% are employers (down from 32% in 2000) 99.9% of which were SME employing 60% of the UK workforce. In developing a training system designed by and
for large employers (0.1% of businesses employing 40% of the workforce), our government (and previous governments) have created a system that effectively bars 48% of the workforce (those working for micro and small businesses - fewer than 50 employees) from developing the skills they
need to improve business productivity: that is nearly 12.5 million workers. If we say that only 30% of workers are eligible for apprenticeships (including the planned advanced levels), we will have surpassed the 3 million target just by focusing on SME needs. The skills minister Anne

Milton today vowed not to 'sacrifice' quality to meet the government's 3 million manifesto pledge. However, figures published today show that the number of apprenticeship starts is 25% less than the equivalent period in 2016/17. The introduction of the apprenticeship levy has done nothing to improve starts. This comes on top of the skills minister conceding that there is a lack of clarity when it comes to who is accountable for apprenticeship quality. The skills agency has overruled Ofsted inspection reports stating that providers are inadequate, and many new untested providers have been successfully registered to deliver levy funded apprenticeship programmes. The faith of SME in the current apprenticeship system is deteriorating markedly. Particularly badly hit (as it was always been) are 16-18 year old apprenticeship starts. With well over 80% of SME owners reporting that school leavers of this age group are not fit for work, traditional sources of apprenticeships for manufacturing are being overlooked in favour of older trainees. CIPD recently reported that just 22% of parents responding to their survey identified apprenticeships as the first or second choice in terms of the kind of qualification they would like their children to achieve. This is less than half of the number of parents who identified an honours degree. Grant Thornton has reported that over half of young people at university do not believe that their degree guarantees them a
well-paid job. This comes on top of surveys that suggest that young people still see schools pushing academic success and progression to HE as their priority and what they are measured on. 1. We have a desperate need for skilled talent. Our SME are losing talent to bigger better paying rivals with 20% reporting problems associated with a high turnover. Two thirds are finding it difficult to find qualified staff. 2. Over 80% of SME owners are saying school leavers are not fit for work 3. There is a 25% drop in apprenticeship starts since the introduction of the levy. 4. 40% of apprenticeship starts are business administration or customer service. A further 21% are health and public service with 28% engineering, manufacturing, science and construction. 5. According to the Office of National Statistics, "output per hour growth has fallen more sharply and persistently in the UK than in other major economies." If gross domestic product in the UK was 100 in 2016, it was between 110 and 120 in Germany, France and Italy and almost 140 in the US. We seem to have a situation where we are relatively uncompetitive, have no real solutions to addressing current skills shortages, are shortly to be hit with needing to trade with a wider grouping of countries while we lose current EU talent and restrict well needed access by foreign talent. district next to the planned HS2 terminal and demolition of the Perry Barr site began earlier this summer. John Crabtree, chairman of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, confirmed that the site will be converted into around 1,400 new houses alongside an extra care village for older people and a community centre. Crabtree added: “In the seven months since being
awarded the 2022 Games, there has been a lot of work done to prepare this planning application. “Now is the time for anyone with an interest in the regeneration of Perry Barr to look at our plans in detail and give feedback to the city council planners. We want the people of the West Midlands to have ownership of the Games and this is one of the first significant ways in which they can do that.”

Alfa Romeo 8C 800-HORSEPOWER SUPERCAR STALKER
Alfa Romeo’s plan to bring the back the 8C nameplate has come with a lot of assumption about its performance. The prevalent thrill surrounding the model is that it’s going to be a supercar of some sort. As it turns out, though, it could be more than just a supercar. The new Alfa Romeo 8C could be an 800-horsepower hybrid monster, debunking previous rumors that said that it would “only” have 700 horsepower on tap. While that may seem like a stretch on the surface, it would also be a mistake to dismiss anything that’s coming out of Alfa
Romeo these days. The late Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the 8C would return in a vastly different form compared to when we last saw it, but he didn’t dive into the details of it. It also plans to supplement the internal combustion engine with
Alfa Romeo that could have a ridiculous 800 horsepower to play around with.
an electric motor that has 200 horsepower of its own. Combine these two sources of power, and you’re looking at an Alfa Romeo that could have a ridiculous 800 horsepower to play around with. Top speed could reach the sky, too, though to be conservative, let’s say that it
can do 210 mph without even breaking a sweat. While all of this is still subject to confirmation from Alfa’s part, it’s more than likely that the 8C is going to be the kind of exotic car we normally associate with its Italian counterpart.

Pro BodyBuilder Wants to Inspire Asian Community P
rofessional bodybuilder Syed Rahat Ali Shah from Birmingham tries to find a balance between family and gym time. Shah had been a casual gym-goer since the age of 18, but he’d never followed a strict programme. Then one day last year, his six-year-old daughter made a comment in passing, and everything changed. “She said, ‘Daddy I want to see your big muscles’” recalls Shah, a former graphic designer and photographer. “It was unusual, because typically you hear kids asking their parents for toys. I decided I had to do something about it. “Bodybuilding is a tough career to maintain in an Asian community due to the pressures surrounding it. It’s never been a major movement in my culture, so for me to pursue it was unheard of.” Shah began to diet and train intensely and following advice from professional bodybuilders in the gym and interviews online, Shah transformed his diet, began tracking macros, and ramped up his training regime. Shah found working out was easy, but his struggle was juggling gym sessions, work commitments and family arrangements. “Family is very important in Asian households,” he says. “I had to sacrifice spending as much time as I’d liked with my family in order to do bodybuilding, but I continued to compete and achieve my goals.” “After every session at the gym, she would ask if I had won. She thought I was already competing because she didn’t understand the training process. It really motivated me. In March 2017, Shah entered a competition hosted by the Aesthetic
Bodybuilding Federation. He placed first in the Men’s Physique category and was voted the overall winner of the event. Shah went on to enter the UKBFF Azadi Classic Show, where he secured first place in the Master Men’s Physique Over 40 category. Since then, he has earned top spots in several competitions, including the UKBFF English Grand Prix 2017, the Arnold Classic Barcelona 2017, and the UKBFF Sugar Classic 2017. “Bodybuilding comes with many challenges, whether it’s internal struggle or negativity from the environment,” he says. “The reason I started my journey was because of my daughter, and throughout the process I have been inspired by her to continue and stay motivated. The support from family and friends has also been unbelievable and is a massive contributing factor in my journey to success.” Shah is currently preparing for the Arnold Classic Europe 2018 in September, the UKBFF British Finals and the 2 Bros Pro Event in October. His advice for aspiring bodybuilders? “If I can make my body extra fit at the age of 41, then why can’t others? I have decided to inspire the world to be fit and live a healthy life. I want to share my message and mission with the world.”
“If I can make my body extra fit at the age of 41, then why can’t others?"

Yan Dhanda Debut Goal With Swansea
Ex-Liverpool midfielder Yan Dhanda marked his professional debut with the goal that led Swansea to victory on the opening day of the new Championship season. Dhanda spent five years on with the Red between 2013 and 2018, but chose to leave Anfield this summer. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder looks no further than the inspirational example of his friend and former Anfield club mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who went to the World Cup with England. ‘We’re quite close and I hope I can follow him, do what he’s doing,’ said Dhanda who sprang off the bench to apply the fine finish that crowned Swansea’s comeback for a deserved victory at Bramall Lane. ‘To play for England is my dream, to go to the World Cup, to play in the Champions League.’ And with a self-deprecating grin: ‘I’m only young, but I want it all.’ The goal? ‘I was imagining it all day, coming on and scoring. When the chance came, it was like it had happened before - but it seems like a dream now.’
Ronaldo Junior To Follow Fathers Footsteps
Khan Wants To Rank At Welterweight Amir Khan is looking to get pushed up the rankings at welterweight after faces contender Samual Vargas on September 8 in Birmingham. Khan doesn’t like the fact that he is ranked in at 157-pound weight class and wants to be at 147. However, his promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing USA thinks it doesn’t matter
where Khan is ranked as he can get him a world title shot against any worls champion in the division. The only champion at welterweight that Khan would have a chance of beating is 39-year-old WBA secondary 147-pound Manny Pacquiao. The September fight will be Khan’s second comeback.
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's oldest son has started training with Juventus youth academy under 9 team. Ronaldo Junior is looking to follow the footsteps of his father by joining the Old Lady's youth academy. Ronaldo signed from Real Madrid to Juventus this summer, in a deal thought to be around 100 million euros. Ronaldo senior recently said of his son: "Cristiano Junior is very competitive. "He is like me when I was a kid. He doesn't like to lose. "He will become like me, I'm 100% sure." Is the footballing world ready for a third Ronaldo? He will certainly have some huge shoes to fill in that time.
