Continued from front page Mr Bhatti will now be focusing on two themes during his two-year tenure as president of the Chamber. He said: “As the new president, I have decided on two themes to focus on. As a region we have a trade surplus with China and the United States. Our small and medium businesses, however, are still not exporting enough and the opportunities are out there. “With GBCC’s exceptional international offering and the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce, British American Business Council and the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce, I believe we are best positioned to start addressing the gap. “My second focus will be to champion the contribution that our businesses make to the economy and to society. Businesses can be and are a force for good. Too often, however, we are overlooked or worse, vilified as a community when something goes wrong with a minority. “As the new president of the Chamber of Commerce, I am determined to ensure that our leaders and policymakers recognise the immense contribution that our 3,000-strong membership make to the economy and to not take us for granted. “To be able to adapt and address the inevitable headwinds, we require support and collaboration. “The greatest certainty I have is that the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and its members will be pivotal in us achieving our potential. Of this, I have no doubt.” Outgoing president Paul Kehoe told the meeting via a video link that he “had a ball” during his two-year term and

reflected on Mr Bhatti’s new presidency. He said: “Saqib Bhatti will be one of the youngest Chamber presidents in the country and will be, I am sure, a great leader and set an excellent example to his peers on the role that the next generation can play in ensuring that business, trade and commerce remains a force for good across the Greater Birmingham Region. “It has been my pleasure to serve the Greater Birmingham business community for the last four years as vice-president and president. I have had a ball and it’s been a real pleasure to work with some great people – whom are ably led by our chief executive, Paul Faulkner.” The Chamber’s strong financial position has allowed it to improve member services through its investment plan, Paul Faulkner said. He added: “I am delighted that we have again recorded a strong financial performance for the 2017/2018 financial year. The Chamber continues to make surpluses sufficient to fulfil our pension fund obligations and increase our revenue reserves. “And this has allowed us to improve member services through our Investment Plan. We have deliberately reorganised our operations so that we could de-risk the business going forward by creating income streams that are less dependent on any single element of the business. “And in tandem with all of this, we have created great policy and communication strategies backed by an amazing events programme, with over 250 taking place

during the year. “Businesses still value the personal contact that takes place through networking at a myriad of events, which is headed by our annual dinner – now THE showpiece of the Birmingham business world. “I’d like to highlight and thank the amazing team I work with at the Chamber, who strive tirelessly to support our members and make a positive difference every day. “Welcome also to our new President, Saqib Bhatti. I’ve been fortunate to see at close quarters over the past few years what an impressive person and leader Saqib is. His four years as President of the ABCC will certainly stand him in good stead for the next two years, and we are very much looking forward to working closely together

This year’s Simplyhealth Great Birmingham run, which is due to take place on Sunday, October 14 will see more than 10,000 participants signed up. and continuing to drive the Chamber forward. “I’d like to place on record my thanks to our outgoing President, Paul Kehoe. I feel extremely fortunate and blessed, both from a professional and personal perspective, to have had the opportunity to really get to know Paul well and to work in tandem over the past two years. “I have learned an incredible amount from him and seen the massively positive impact he has had on the Chamber during his Presidency. It has been a true pleasure working with Paul as our President, and I am delighted that he will be continuing to add his experience and leadership to the Chamber family as a member of our Board.” David Waller, chairman

of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, spoke of his pride in the achievements of the team’s performance under the leadership of chief executive Paul Faulkner. He said: “We have enjoyed another year of continued growth and success in all of our key areas, providing the voice of business in the region, delivering services to members and running an extensive programme of networking events. “Our annual dinner at the ICC was the largest ever with over with over 1,400 delegates. I am very proud of the Chamber team who, under the leadership of our chief executive Paul Faulkner, has grown our membership, improved our service provision and provided exemplary support to our business membership.”

Park cleared of kerb crawlers, prostitutes and drug dealers - the streets are safer and no longer a scary place to be at night

B

irmingham’s local area Ward End Park, off Washwood Heath Road, was overrun with kerb crawlers, prostitutes and drug dealers around a year ago and after months of hard work the streets are safer and no longer a scary place to be at night. The Alum Rock Community Forum formed four years ago would mostly handle street light issues, the condition of the roads and flytipping added prostitution and drug dealing to their list of issues to tackle. The team would go out and be faced with hostility they were verbally abused, threatened with acid and pelted with water and eggs but remained determined. on the scale of the problem. They estimated around 150 men were in the area at night looking to pick up women. He said: “We found there were 10 to 12 women who operated daily and drug users, about 20 to 30 guys, sitting on benches and walking up and down Washwood Heath Road." The forum held a meeting attended by more than 100 people, including the police, councillors and public, where after presenting their findings, they decided they would run official street patrols, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. He said: “When we used to see a girl jump in a car, we would allow up to four minutes then approach, open the door and ask the girl to leave and explain to the punter to make him realise

how vulnerable these woman are. After just two months, they forum noticed a difference. The spokesman said: “Our patrols were being effective. The syringes and condoms started disappearing. “The number of punters from 150 on average a night reduced to 40 or 50 which made the girls use less drugs. The girls started believing in us. We weren’t against them but with them. We started referring them to agencies to receive help.” “The response from the community has been amazing and the authorities have been great by helping the girls. It’s been well worth it and most of all, seeing the park used by local children is a blessing.”

Boy Swallowed Plastic Found in Chocolate Egg

A distraught mother has claimed how her seven-year-old son found plastic pieces in a vanilla-filled chocolate egg bought from Poundland. Kaelen Shah, 7 years-old, from Rushey Mead, Leicester complained of a stomach ache after bit into some of the “hard rubbery” material, which he mistakenly thought to be cookie crumble. The family were on a shopping trip to Thurmaston Shopping Centre on Sunday, September 23, when the purchase was made. Mum Reshma, 38, said she was “horrified” by the discovery and feared her son could have choked on the plastic. “We decided to buy some chocolate eggs called ‘Spoon it Out’. They come in packs of four and are milk chocolate eggs with a vanilla filling which you eat

using a spoon which is provided. Kaelen was the first to tuck into one of the eggs and it wasn’t long before he found the alleged piece of plastic. Mrs Shah said: “Kaelan cracked open one of them and found black pieces inside. “He thought it must be a new variety with cookie crumble but upon biting down on one of the pieces he hurt his tooth and took it out immediately. “My husband grabbed the egg from him and, upon checking properly, found several hard, rubbery pieces of plastic. “We were absolutely horrified and took the eggs straight back into the store, where we demanded to see the manager to report the matter.” She added: “A few hours later, Kaelan started to complain of stomach pains and said he may

have swallowed one of the pieces. It only lasted for a day or so and he is alright now, but it could have been more serious. Mrs Shah said that the manager at the store was understanding and offered them something else in the store for free. She added: "I told him that wasn't the point. He took the chocolate eggs from us and said we had to fill out a form to make a formal complaint." The family said they are still considering whether to apply for compensation from Poundland over the matter. A spokeswoman said: “The customer has been in touch and we’re asking the supplier to investigate what’s happened. We’ll report their findings directly back to Reshma and thank her for getting in touch."

Black Cabs with roof-top advertising screens The new signs will also be able to display real-time breaking news, weather updates, emergency and traffic advice as well as post details of large public events in and around the city.

Many of Birmingham black cabs and hackney carriages are to be fitted with new roof-top advertising screens – which will also deliver ‘critical’ public information alerts. They could display emergency messages for the public as well as advertising. As well as promoting for businesses which pay for the exposure, the new signs will also be able to display realtime breaking news, weather updates, emergency and

Birmingham City Council’s Licensing and Public Protection Committee approved the venture Wednesday, September 19th following a Dragons’ Denstyle pitch from Wedooh, the company behind the product. Addressing the committee Nick Smith, CEO of Edgbaston-based Elonex which is a part of Wedooh, said: “This is a new innovation for Birmingham which will benefit all stakeholders; businesses, the city council, residents, taxi drivers and visitors. “It is much more than just an advertising channel. “They will highlight

Student Jailed for Buying Pistol and Ammunition on the Dark Web An undergraduate at Wolverhampton University has been jailed to six years and eight months after using the DarkWeb to try and obtain an automatic pistol and ammunition. Asaan Hussain 23, of Green Avenue, Hall Green, pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to import a pistol and ammunition, possessing a prohibited weapon and ammunition and possessing articles for fraud. His plan was foiled after customs officers in America discovered the weapon hidden in a speaker earlier this year on July 17. It was contained within a parcel addressed to a property in Bedworth. West Midland police were alerted, and it was replaced with a “dummy parcel” minus the gun and ammunition. Officers kept watch and the parcel was delivered to the address where Asaan’s girlfriend lived. When Asaan arrived at the property armed officers forced their way in and he was arrested. “They saw that the cardboard box that had been delivered had been opened and the speaker taken out. The back had been removed by taking out six screws. The defendant had opened it

obviously expecting it contained a hand gun and ammunition,” said Matthew Brook, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court. Mr Brook said police initially went to an address in Redditch before going to the property in Hall Green , his parents home, where Asaan lived in an annex in the back garden. In a bedroom they found a bag containing a stun gun with five cartridges and they also discovered a device for cloning credit cards and bank statements with other peoples names on them. Asaan had left his lap top on and police were able to access it and discovered he had searched on the Dark Web for firearms and conversations he had had with a number of sellers.

The owner of Zuri Coffee, Sham Sharma received an honorary fellowship from the University of Wolverhampton. The award, presented at a graduation ceremony on Thursday, 13 September, was made in recognition of Sham’s contribution to the University, and support of current students through a number of prizes and awards. He said he was “thrilled” to be receiving the award and to be sharing the special day with graduates. Sham had some words of wisdom for the graduates: “Success is not often measured by how much money you have; it can be determined in other ways. Think of being successful. Don’t be afraid of criticism or failure, it’s part of learning curve and we never stop learning. As you journey through life, be open-

minded and collaborate with others.” Sham Sharma came to the UK in 1969, aged 12, and learnt English at secondary school. In 1977, he enrolled at the University of Aston to study sciences and started a clothing business while studying for his degree – by 1987, he had nine successful outlets. Sham started Sunitek, an IT company, in 1997 and the business grew year on year, becoming a major supplier of hardware and software to schools and colleges in Wolverhampton. In 2012, Sham became chair of Wolverhampton Forum. He sold Sunitek in 2014 after opening the popular Zuri Coffee in Wolverhampton serving Indian inspired street food, in 2013. Following the success of Zuri, he plans to establish a chain of coffee shops.

Birmingham Art deco cinema ruined in blaze OCTOBER 2018

Local conservation group the Royalty Harborne Trust have been in discussions with the heritage Lottery fund to restore it back to a working picture house.

A cinema in Harborne, South Birmingham has been devastated by a shocking fire, leaving the local community to mourn the loss of a local historic landmark. Abandoned picture house was "neglected" by planners. More than 50 fire fighters worked through the night to tackle the blaze at the historic Royalty Cinema in Harborne, a suburb of Birmingham. Harborne resident Jennifer Payne was stunned when she found out about the fire was at the cinema, which has been at the centre of a community effort to restore the historic building. "My house is right behind it, I grew up in it's shadow and now it won't be there anymore," said the 27 year old, who works in television. "The Royalty is famous around here - I've even played bingo in there a few times! Harborne is a really nice area in Birmingham and that building has always

stood out - it's quite an important part of the high street. We were hoping it might be opened again one day - I'm devastated that it's gone." Di Lynne tweeted that the fire was a "Terrible shame". "So sad to loose another piece of history," she added. Nick Drake filmed the fire as the incident unfolded. He said it was "very sad" to see the iconic Art Deco building go up in flames. The Grade II Royalty Cinema was built in 1930 in a period of redevelopment for the British film industry - the government introduced the Cinematograph Act in 1927 to recharge national filmmaking in the face of the antagonistic influence of Hollywood. But very few cinemas from the era survived, and the Royalty was one of the last. It was converted into a bingo hall in 1963, and subsequently remained empty for many years.

Rapid Transit - Sprint bus route to link Solihull and Birmingham by 2022 TO ADVERTISE CALL NOW ON 0121 667 8719

NEWS

OCTOBER 2018

West Midlands mayor Andy Street said: “Sprint will work in tandem with the new suburban rail lines and Metro tram routes we are building, creating a transport network that can grow our economy, give people cleaner air and squeeze the maximum benefit possible from HS2."

A Rapid Transit - sprint bus route will connect Solihull and Birmingham in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Schemes for new tram-style vehicles called Sprint were unveiled by Transport for West Midlands. The new service will provide fast and consistent journeys along some of the region’s busiest roads. The full network will be completed by 2026 and it is expected to be made up of seven routes, that will run throughout the city. The network will provide important links to Birmingham city centre, the NEC, Birmingham Airport and the HS2 interchange. That will help keep Birmingham connected. Three of the seven sprint routes will be completed by 2022, one of which will run from Solihull town centre.

A Transport for West Midlands spokesperson said: “Public transport in the West Midlands is being transformed. “Sprint is a brand new, modern, high quality public transport service. “Sprint runs on the road, with dedicated bus lanes and priority through areas of congestion, which will make the journey times much more reliable. “The vehicles will offer passengers a level of service and comfort similar to a tram, with off-board ticketing, multiple-door boarding, wheelchair and pushchair access, free Wi-Fi, and air conditioning as well as on-board audio visual announcements and travel information.” West Midlands mayor Andy Street said: “Sprint will work in tandem with the new suburban rail lines and Metro

tram routes we are building, creating a transport network that can grow our economy, give people cleaner air and squeeze the maximum benefit possible from HS2. “But Sprint can also help make the Commonwealth Games a success which is why we are accelerating three of the routes. “I would urge people to have their say on these plans and help showcase our region to the world and shape our future transport system.” The three routes set to be finalised by 2022 are: – Birmingham City Centre to Birmingham Airport and Solihull (A45 serving NEC) – Birmingham City Centre through Sandwell to Walsall (A34 serving Games Village and Alexander Stadium) – Birmingham City Centre to Sutton Coldfield via Langley.

Thank you for attending - CEO's Message

MSDUK is the UK's leading non-profit membership organisation driving inclusive procurement. Promoting the ethos of diversity and inclusion in public and private sector supply chains by identifying and introducing innovative and entrepreneurial ethnic minority owned businesses.

MSDUK announces supplier diversity award winners at 2018 Awards Dinner

Cassandra Rennie, winner of MSDUK Supplier Diversity Advocate award

T

he winners of the UK’s most prestigious supplier diversity awards were revealed last week (Wednesday 26th September) at a glittering ceremony at Birmingham’s Vox Conference Centre. The annual MSDUK Conference and Awards is a must-attend event for Ethnic Minority Businesses looking to drive inclusive procurement and connect with diverse like-minded businessmen and women. This year’s event saw over 1,000 entrepreneurs, exhibitors and supplier diversity leaders gather to honour the efforts of both large corporations and ethnic minority owned businesses in making supply chains both

inclusive and competitive. The MSDUK Awards 2018 were split into six categories: – Scale Up Business (sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company) – Inclusive Procurement – Supplier Diversity Advocate (sponsored by AgileOne) – Supplier Diversity Excellence (sponsored by Gibbs Hybrid) – Businesswoman of the Year (sponsored by EY) – Entrepreneur of the Year (sponsored by EY) Blue-collar recruitment agency Fortel Services and Clinical Research Organisation (CRO) Clintec International were named joint winners of the Scale Up

Business Award, an award which recognises businesses that have shown significant demonstrable growth over the last two financial years within their specific marketplace. The Inclusive Procurement Award, awarded to a British public or private sector purchasing organisation outside of the MSDUK network that demonstrates the strongest commitment to supply chain diversity, was handed to HS2 – the UK’s imminent high-speed railway and the largest infrastructure project in Europe. Paul Harvey, Head of Procurement at Marsh & McLennan Companies, and Cassandra Rennie, UKI Operations and

Sustainability Senior Analyst at Accenture, were named joint winners of the Supplier Diversity Advocate Award for their commitment, passion and hard work to promote diversity and inclusion within their organisation’s supply chain; while national energy supplier EDF Energy picked up the Supplier Diversity Excellence Award in recognition of its exceptional leadership in supplier diversity. Raj Tulsiani, CEO of Interim Management and Executive Search firm Green Park was crowned Entrepreneur of the Year in celebration of his longstanding commitment to supplier diversity and for “setting a new benchmark

The month of September 2018 saw Birmingham, the second largest and the most diverse city in the UK, host Europe’s largest supplier diversity conference; on behalf of the Board and the Management team at MSDUK, I would like to extend my huge thanks to all our sponsors, speakers, partners, international guests and delegates for being a part of this mega event. Diversity is’ what you have’ and Inclusion is ‘what you do’ and every single event, both outside and inside the MSDUK Conference programme, had both of these elements. Our focus throughout the conference on Unlocking Innovation through Diversity was exactly what you do with diversity and, to have hosted over 400 delegates representing young and old, male and female and from a truly different cultural and ethnic background, we achieved this. To me personally, the highlights of this global event were: The first-ever Business Residential Programme for entrepreneurs from the UK and South Africa, delivered jointly by the Ivy Leagues’ Tuck School of Business and Aston Business School, empowered these ambitious entrepreneurs with tools and techniques to build highperforming businesses The MSDUK Innovation Challenge witnessed some of the most energetic, ambitious and innovative entrepreneurs, mostly millennials, present their ideas in front of industry leaders, once again showcasing the best and brightest emerging talent from our diverse communities. As MSDUK prepares to deliver our ambitious 3 year growth plan, unlocking the power of difference through innovation and empowering our stakeholders with knowledge and supply chain intelligence, we look forward to welcoming you all again in 2020 in London. for the recruitment industry that widens the gate without lowering the bar”. Concluding the dazzling awards ceremony, Farida Gibbs, CEO of Gibbs Hybrid, which provides singlesource integrated Talent Management Services, Programme Consultancy and Outsourcing Solutions to mid-market and FORTUNE 500 companies, received the prestigious accolade of Businesswoman of the Year in recognition of her “dynamic, creative and visionary” leadership. Delegates enjoyed a stellar line-up of speakers including Janice Bryant Howroyd, the first African American woman to build a $1bn business; Channel 4 news presenter Krishnan GuruMurthy; stand-up comedian Ava Vidal; Ebookers founder Dinesh Dhamija and Accenture CPO Kai Nowosel, before being treated to a sumptuous Awards Dinner sponsored by Barclays. The two-day event (25th26th September) concluded with the hotly anticipated Awards Reception sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline. Mayank Shah, CEO of MSDUK, said: “This year’s awards were driven by the idea that innovation through diversity will be what powers the UK economy over the next decade. All of our award

finalists are living proof of this principle, and long may their commitment to supply chain diversity continue. “Our warmest congratulations go to the winners of the MSDUK Awards 2018. They deserve these awards for the outstanding and important work they do”. Farida Gibbs, MSDUK Businesswoman of the Year and CEO of Gibbs Hybrid, said: “I am thrilled to be named MSDUK Businesswoman of the Year. I’ve never considered myself to be an ‘entrepreneur’ – I am someone who loves what they do with great passion. I didn’t do well at school, an illness at the age of 15 saw me in and out of hospitals and I left school with 2 GCSE’s. I felt like a failure. I truly believe this is one of the reasons why I push the boundaries, am tenacious, never give up, take a leap of faith (self-belief) to prove that I am successful and can be successful if I put my mind to it”. She added: “My upbringing has taught me to be a great leader for my team, to lead by example, build a team who share the same common purpose and outlook on life. Whatever I set my mind to do, I do. Whatever we dream, our vision is all within our reach”.

Nachural Entrepreneurships Awards 2018 Winners Announced British entrepreneurs will come on top and go from strength to strength after Brexit, claims multimillionaire businessman Jojar Dhinsa, Chairman and CEO of The Athlone Group. He told an audience of more than 450 entrepreneurs: "The community of entrepreneurs are hard-working, resourceful and passionate about the businesses they run. They are naturally open to change and flexible every day of their lives. It comes with the territory and is in their DNA. We won't dwell - we will just carry on and prosper in the new environment. "They will meet head on and take in their stride whatever deal the Prime Minister Theresa May and her team negotiates and go from strength to strength in the world of global business." Mr Dhinsa, who was born in Coventry, and now has worldwide business interests, is a great believer in the start-up community as well as giving back to the community through charitable contributions. The second Nachural Entrepreneurship Awards were set up to encourage networking between the East and West Midlands whilst recognising wealth creating businesses of all

backgrounds and sectors. The awards set out to recognise excellence from early stage businesses to those that had matured but also included companies who modus operandi is to disrupt the marketplace. There was also an emphasis on international and community based work too. Mr Ninder Johal of Nachural , the organiser of the event and who is also past president of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and a Black Country LEP board member spoke about the positive growth of the UK over the last 12 months but warned about the slowing down of the global economy and in particular the uncertainty around Brexit, the EU and potential world trade which starts to operate on a protectionist level . He also emphasized the need to concentrate on the importance of education and how this will impinge on the ability of the UK to remain competitive in the global marketplace. He warned on the need to have a balanced economy both in terms of sectoral coverage but also from a geographical basis where London was still seen as overheating. He also warned the region to collaborate and

work together in order to safeguard funding for crucial issues such as transport infrastructure and local skills development. The winners on the night were : Meetings Suite ( Start up of the year ), Talash Hotels ( Hospitality Business of the Year ) First Enterprise ( Community ), Matt Jones Oxbridge Home Learning (Entrepreneur of the year ) , Tinku Durrani ( Business Person of the Year ) ECYCS ( Promoting Apprenticeships in the Workplace ) Chutney Ivy ( Customer Services of the Year), Mo Bros Grooming Co ( small business of the year), Clifton Packaging ( International and Enterprise ) and Adeem Younis ( Social and Business Entrepreneur ). Boxer Amir Khan Facetimes Convict Killer Boxer Amir Khan has sparked an outrage by chatting to a convicted killer in jail via FaceTime and telling him to 'Keep your chin up bro.' Khan had a FaceTime call with Philip Merry, who is serving eight years for manslaughter after beating to death father-of-five Steve McKinnon in a pub fight in Leicester in 2014. Merry, 31, posted a screenshot of the call on his Instagram story with the caption: 'When Amir Khan Facetimes you to say 'Keep your chin up bro'. Big love bro'. Mr McKinnon's widow Clare told The Sun : "Amir Khan is meant to be a role model. "It's disgusting he would back someone like Merry. "He should be round here telling me to keep my chin up after what I've been through. "Merry is meant to be in prison serving his punishment, not getting morale-boosting messages from the likes of Khan. How's Merry even got a phone in prison?" A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "This behaviour is unacceptable and we have had this account taken down." A spokesman for Khan said: "We can confirm that

Amir was provided with a mobile phone from a fan and asked to speak to his friend (something that occurs frequently). "There was no prior notice that his friend was in prison

Solihull “Sham Immigration Lawyer” sentenced for fraud

A Solihull Lawyer - Ms. Harvinder Kaur Thethi, was found guilty of six counts of fraud by false representation. On Thursday 26 July 2018, at Southwark Crown Court, Ms. Harvinder Kaur Thethi, aged 46 years, of Old Hall Gardens, Solihull, West Midlands, was found guilty of six counts of fraud by false depiction. Ms. Thethi was remanded in custody pending a sentencing hearing. The offences took place between 1 June 2013 and 8 September 2014 in Hounslow, West London. Ms.Thethi, an unqualified person, falsely claimed to be a barrister, solicitor and a Home Office official with the ability to process immigration applications. She obtained £68,000 from vulnerable people in payment for immigration related services which were promised but then not delivered. Ms. Thethi crawled herself to the victims and was treated as a daughter or sister. This prosecution was the result

You were nothing of the sort. The large amounts of money you obtained came entirely from money you had stolen from people you had befriended and cheated. People whose immigration status is precarious are very, very vulnerable. I commend both officers in this case.”Speaking about the decision, Deputy Immigration Services Commissioner, Dr Ian Leigh, stated:“Securing the conviction of Ms Thethi is an excellent example of collaborative working by agencies operating within the immigration environment. The OISC is here to ensure that people seeking immigration advice are treated fairly by qualified people they can trust. Ms Thethi was operating outside of the law, preying upon vulnerable victims without regard for their protection or the consequences of her criminal behaviour. I am delighted with the outcome of this case, and I hope it sends a clear deterrent message to anyone considering acting similarly.”

Leicester to create First Sikh Faith Secondary School A proposal to build a new secondary school is being put to the Department of Education by the academy trust behind Falcons Primary School. An application is being made under the government’s Free Schools programme. If successful, the new Falcons Academy which opened just under four years ago would become Leicester’s first Sikh faith secondary school. Jasbir Mann, headteacher of Falcons Primary School said the idea is being endorsed and supported by parents, members of Akaal Education Trust, local Gurdwaras, councillors and MPs. She said: “Parents have been incredibly supportive of our school and are now keen to see a Sikh faith secondary school in Leicester. “When we opened in October, 2014, we had just 34 children but now have more than 340 pupils and a full capacity of 420 pupils from across Leicester and Leicestershire. He added: “The time is now right to build on the

success of Falcons Primary with a Sikh faith 11-16 Academy in Leicester. According to the 2011 census there are almost 15,000 Sikhs living in Leicester and a further 8,000 across the county. Mrs Mann said: “Our secondary school would continues the strong tradition of faith schools in Leicester and will be the first Sikh faith secondary school alongside existing Christian, Muslim and Hindu faith secondary schools. “Falcons Primary attracts families of other faiths and no faith due to its inclusive values of unity, equality and respect. Leicester East MP Keith Vaz supports the idea of a new Sikh secondary school for Leicester. “One of the many assets of Falcons Primary School is that it attracts families of other faiths and this inclusivity is important for the multi-faith community of Leicester.” Deputy City Mayor, Councillor Piara Singh Clair, is also backing the project. He said: “The primary

school has been a huge success and I’m sure the secondary school will be the same.

“Leicester is such a diverse city and I support the aspirations of the Sikh community to have a faith

school for 11 to 16-year-olds, which will be one that also welcomes and embraces children from other faiths.

“I will do all I can to help them achieve this.” Read more on this story online - www.theasiantoday.com

Interview with BBC Asian Network presenter and DJ

We speak with AJD and discuss his passion for music and his thoughts on today's bhangra, have a read at what he said: So you’re from The Midlands as well A: Yes, I’m from Derby And from Punjabi background as well? A: Yes, UK born and raised, and grew up in my days in Derby. Your still on the BBC Asian network now? A: Yes, I started on the network in January, and joined as part time and I got my own show on Saturdays 4pm-7pm so check it out. Yeah, I suppose a lot of Apaneh tune into it A: Yes, our demographic is quite wide because its an open format show, so its not just bhangra and Bollywood, not like the norm, we’re trying to break away from that, and with BBC Asian network, people have that ideology that its based-on bhangra and Bollywood music. With myself I’ve just come in there, open format in a sense, and I’m happy to mix bhangra with house, or mix Bollywood with grime or whatever it is, just to make sure I can get to that demographic of the youth, the British Asian youth to bring the sound forward. And Is it a mix of Bhangra and house? A: yeah, like I said its open format, so it’s a mix of genres, whatever I think appeals to my ear is something that I think that listeners will like to appreciate, as well as my following, if you follow my socials, I am an avid supporter of fusing both genres, all genres together, certainly Asian genres with mainstream genres, just so we can try to push it forward to that higher spectrum. Okay, sounds great, so we’ve got you here today as

we are a printed and online paper that is aimed mainly at the south Asian community and our readers would be interested in getting your opinion on the Bhangra music scene. A: yeah, the bhangra music scene at the moment is flourishing quite a bit, in terms of the scenes, the producers, the singers, where they’re coming out from, I think its great at this moment in time, everyone’s flying the flag high for relative countries as well, so you’ve got India, some of the greatest biggest singers there, biggest world wide names and super stars, names like Garry Sandhu, Mankirt Aulakh, Amrit Maan there just three that I can name of the top of my head. Then you come to Canada and America, you’ve got people like Sidhu Moosewala, all flying the flag there, all different types of genres and music, and all people that bring their style forward and you come back to the UK and you’ve got great artists such as JK, H Dhami, Jaz Dhami and all the music producers as well like JSK and you’ve got quite a few others in Canada, and India as well, there’s so many there that I can name of the top of my head, everyone’s got their own style and their own unique way of working that they’re bringing forward, so I think bhangras in a really good stage right now. So what would you say your favorite bhangra track at the moment or Bhangra artists? A: I listen to music, new music comes to me on a daily, weekly bases, thing is, if I was to say favorite song, it would

be very hard for me to pick, if you’re gonna put me on the spot, then I definitely cant think of one right now. If I was to base on songs that I’m playing out, for example, someone like Jasmine Sandlers, she seems to be doing really well, I hear her tracks are getting massive responses on the scene out there as well. Gary Sandhu again, another one, are doing really great, if we were to go less commercial, and more on the desi side, then someone like Ranjit Bawa songs are absolutely, yeah, they’re ripping it apart. Its great because you’ve got different sides off the spectrum, but the songs are doing great on all fronts. Do you reckon The Midlands is more of a Bhangra hotspot compared to say London? A: yeah, we know how to get down, I’ve got a lot of time for London, I spent 2 and a half years of my life, and I met some great people there, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty of bhangra and desi, and the love of it, there’s no one getting down like midlands, being a DJ myself, I’ve DJ’ed at a lot of weddings across the UK and abroad as well, and I do a lot of wedding in London, and I think even the DJ’s in London that do weddings in the midlands, would agree that the crowds and the general desi rawness belongs here. Yeah we all like a mixed grill and a peg on a Friday evening A: yeah that’s it man, mixed grill as well, we’ve got the best mixed grill and parties in the midlands. What artists do you think are pushing out the Bhangra scene to a wider demographic or wider target audience? A:I think everybody is paving the way, its just a case, of the last break out record that we had was Punjabi mc Mundian to Bach Ke your talking quite a long time ago, on its original album it came out in 1998, ts been out for 20 years. So, I would say the there’s definitely an artist due to bring it back out mainstream.

"Yeah, the bhangra music scene at the moment is flourishing quite a bit, in terms of the scenes, the producers, the singers, where they’re coming out from, I think its great at this moment in time, everyone’s flying the flag high for relative countries as well."

Sikh Coldstream Guard Tested Positive For Drug Use

A Coldstream Guardsman who was the first to wear a turban during Trooping the Colour is under investigation after being tested positive for cocaine. A couple from Oldham were arrested from Tesco Superstore in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, after a dispute over bottle water. Customers watched as the young couple were hauled to the ground before being taken away in handcuffs. Nasir Hussain and girlfriend Mahira Hussain, were charged with assaulting a police officer, who suffered injuries to the face, according to Greater Manchester Police. However, Mr Hussain accused the police of using excessive force and said he intends to make an official complaint to the IPCC. Mr Hussian said: ‘To be honest I’m absolutely shocked something like this could ever happen. ‘The water was just for home, my missus drinks two litres of Volvic a day. She’s a secondary school teacher and the bottled water is kind of her trademark, she’s very popular at the school.’ He continued: ‘We’d already put half the bottles through the checkout when the manager

said you can’t take that many. Mr Hussain says he was just trying to explain that other Tescos had sold us the same amount in the past and it wasn’t a problem. They had loads of water left on the shelves, but the manager said call security. I saw the police officer and he wasn’t interested in hearing my side of the story.’ When the officer approaches he realises he is being filmed and turns his back to the camera and asks the couple to switch it off – which they do. But then resume filming moments later as the officer is trying to lead Mr Hussian towards the store exit. He stands his ground and tells the officer: ‘I was already walking. You didn’t need to escort me. You don’t need to touch my personal… Can you just clarify something for me?’ But the officer refuses to discuss the matter any further and grabs Mr Hussain by his clothing. An unknown person starts recording as the couple gets

restrained to the ground. Miss Hussain is heard saying ‘get off me’ when another officer takes hold of her, as she clings to a nearby checkout and resists. Mr Hussain then shouts: ‘I didn’t do anything. When are you allowed to punch someone for doing nothing? You wanna know what racism is? This is what it fucking looks like.’ Mr Hussain continued: ‘He arrested me and my partner without warning and used excessive force, I think he lost the plot. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Two people have been charged with assaulting a police officer. ‘Nasir Hussain and Mahira Hussain both of Oldham, have been charged with assault of a constable and have been bailed to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 30 October 2018. A Tesco spokesperson said, ‘We are aware of the incident at the Rochdale Superstore and will assist with the investigation.’

Takeaway Woman Dies JAS SANSI The Thinking Man's Mouthpiece After Hitand Run Worked Faked In Smethwick Kidnap Jailed Photographer and LoveBrum trustee, Jas Sansi brings a dose of all things Birmingham. With an unprecedented love of the city and its unique diverseness, he brings his 6-foot passion to The Asian Today.

I'M BORED OF BREXIT

I spent four days at Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham this week. I was photographing some of the events and picked up a few new dance moves. There were panel debates on education, health and other pressing topics but all of these are masked by the fog of Brexit. Leaving the EU and the implications continue to dominate conversation. I’m bored of Brexit; bored talking about it, bored thinking about it and bored writing about it. I just want the whole sorry mess to be over and done with so we can move on as a country. I can’t wait until 11pm on 29th March 2019 when the guillotine drops. We can finally see what happens. The return of certainty may see our economy explode or the implications of that certainty see us retract as an economy. It’s vital business is ready for change. Debts paid down, waste minimised and cash at hand to bridge any possible slow down in sales. I believe those operating efficient businesses will be able to steer their ships through choppy waters. Those who are stretched in borrowing and paying high levels of debt interest are vulnerable. Economic history is littered with the graves of businesses who were unable to operate in times of change. As in the evolution of species, the strong will survive and new companies will rise. Those who innovate, bringing new ideas to the table have nothing to fear. If you have built your company imitating the ideas of others and operate in their shadow, you have much to fear. Always remember, those who campaigned to Remain in the EU do not deserve the scorn of those who find themselves on the wrong side of the line. Neither do we deserve praise should you find life is on the up.

A woman who was hit by a taxi died as she was walking to her parked car in Smethwick. Surinder Kaur Saund, 68 was getting into her car in Waterloo Road, Smethwick , just before 10pm on Wednesday 3 October when she was hit by a taxi which collided with an overtaking Mercedes. Both vehicles were travelling on the side of the road where her car was parked. The taxi driver remained at the scene, but the driver of the Mercedes left after briefly stopping, police said. Officers arrested five men a short distance from the scene. The men, aged between 20 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in police custody. A West Midlands Ambulance Service

statement read: "A woman pedestrian died after a crash involving two cars. "On arrival, ambulance staff found bystanders trying to assist the woman. "Crews and the doctor performed advanced life support, but sadly it was not possible to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene. "There were no other injuries." Det Sgt Paul Hughes, from the force's serious collision investigation unit, appealed for witnesses to the crash which happened at about 21:50 BST. "Officers from our dedicated family liaison team are currently supporting the family at this tragic time and I would urge anyone who can help us piece together the moments before this mother and wife lost her life, to get in touch as soon as possible," he added.

A takeaway worker who lied to the police has been jailed after claiming he had been kidnapped at gunpoint. Choudhary Rasool, 29, dialled 999 and claimed he was being held in a flat. Staffordshire Police deployed firearms officers, forensic investigators and detectives to the scene, prepared for a tense standoff. Two men were arrested and taken into custody one being Rasool’s restaurant boss and his friend – while their homes were searched. Officers became suspicious when Rasool’s employer and landlord told officers he had sold the takeaway and that the new owner did not want to employ the defendant. This would result in Rasool losing both his job and his flat above the shop, in Church Street, Stoke. The takeaway worker was jailed for 12 months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Prosecutor David Bennett told how Rasool called 999 at 8.24am on September 1. “He suggested he had been threatened,” he said. “He said one person was in possession of a gun and another man was in possession of a knife. “Staffordshire Police deployed a considerable amount of resources to the scene. “He repeated the allegations. He said one of the men was his landlord and employer.” Police went to the man’s address in Yarnfield and he was arrested at 11.45am. A second man was also arrested.

A Leicester hip hop artist jailed for two and a half years after befriending two young girls on social media and kept them out all night. Charnjit Singh, aged 28 pleaded guilty to two counts of child abduction between May 31 and June 1. Leicester Crown Court was told that nothing sexual happened with either girl - but the judge said Singh may have been grooming them for future misconduct. Phillip Plant, prosecuting, said the two young friends were supposed to have been staying overnight at one of their homes, with a grandmother babysitting, while the mother was working a night shift. When the mother arrived home at1.45am, to find the girls were missing, she alerted the police. He drove the girls back to their Leicester homes at 8am. The defendant of Wavertree Drive, Belgrave, Leicester, was said to have encouraged the two

victims to meet him through the social media app, Instagram. Sentencing, Judge Robert Brown said he accepted there was no suggestion Singh had indecently touched either girl or said anything in messages suggesting there was any sexual intent. He pointed out that Singh was 17 years older than the youngest child and said: "This case raises obvious concern that you had a sexual motive from abducting these two young girls." Judge Brown added: "This defendant is a self-styled hip hop musician and uploaded a video to YouTube." The eldest child began following Singh on Instagram and they had been in contact for about 11 weeks prior to the abduction. The defendant then met both girls at a local park at about 8pm and they drove around in his car until he dropped them back at 10pm. However, he returned to meet them an hour later, at their

suggestion, and they stayed out all night until 8am Singh also admitted two counts of driving a BMW without insurance, including on the night of the child abduction, and was banned from driving for 27 months. After the hearing, PC Tim Grigg, from the force’s Child Sexual

In his police interview, Rasool said he had argued with his employer about unpaid wages, and his boss returned with two other men. He said one produced a handgun and one had a Rambo-style knife, and threats were made to kill him. Police continued their investigations and the employer told them he was friends with the defendant and had allowed him to live in the flat above the takeaway for free. Officers studied CCTV

Exploitation team, said: “Evidence uncovered during the investigation revealed Singh was grooming young girls under the age of 16 using social media. Staying safe online is important to stop you from being a target. You should never give out your personal details online to people you don’t know.

footage which showed the defendant being dropped off and going into the premises on his own. Judge David Fletcher told Rasool: “It was a massive waste of scarce resources. I am confident it will have cost this country thousands and thousands of pounds. “But there is a much more serious aspect to this than simply resources and money – two men who had done nothing wrong were arrested and detained in custody.

Experts give a number of reasons for people to quit smoking for the sake of both themselves and for those around them. First and foremost, quitting smoking can greatly improve personal health, leading to both shortterm and long-term health benefits. Within 20 minutes of stopping smoking, heart rates and blood pressure drops while blood circulation and lung function improves and heart attack risks decline as soon as two weeks after quitting. It's also a great way to save money, as those who smoke one pack per day could save roughly £250 every month. Finally, quitting smoking can help protect family members from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, greatly reducing their risk of developing lung cancer, asthma, meningitis and other health problems.

The Hidden cost of our 'hostile environment'

Much has been reported about the consequences of our hostile environment towards illegal immigration. Issues regarding the Windrush generation, foreign students and increasing post referendum racism are painting a bleak picture of a country I am proud of. Whilst the beleaguered Home Office is seen as the principal culprit, I think we have a significant unintended consequence that is currently harming our country at a time when we need to be addressing productivity and growth ready for our departure from the EU. When I talk to my business colleagues they tell me about the rise in interethnic tensions within the workplace and how they are damaging previously good working relationships and even output. Wellmeaning managers are often ill equipped to deal with such tensions and perhaps years of brushing issues under the carpet has left the tinder dangerously dry. I tried to work out what

BUSINESS

the impact of rising conflict in the workplace had on business productivity and it is at least 5% across all businesses in the region. That means that the hostile environment towards illegal immigration is costing the Black Country at least £1 billion a year in lost productivity. For the whole UK, this figure could be £25 billion every year. Just think how many roads, schools and hospitals this money could buy. As a region we cannot afford this loss. As a nation shortly to be set free to trade with the wider world, our perceived hostility will not be conducive to trade. Furthermore, we are becoming increasingly unpopular as a destination for foreign students. Rising racist attacks apparently sanctioned by the hostile environment and Brexit sentiment do nothing for our reputation as a nation welcoming of talent and skill. The impact of this hostility would be somewhat lessened if we were not completely

dependent on foreign skilled workers. I hate to think what will happen to our economy and our ability to trade if this pool of talent dries up as a consequence of government policy on controlling illegal immigration. Illegal immigration needs to be stamped out, but this means addressing trafficking and border controls not tarring legitimate immigrants, including refugees and asylum seekers, with the same hostile brush. Our success in the global economy, now that we are free to become masters of our own destiny, depends on how welcoming we are to business leaders and talent from all parts of the world. It has been the source of our success in the past and it will be in the future. If business across the world want to trade with us because they like us, any post Brexit economic deficit heralded by doomsayers will never take place. Please join with me and raise this issue with your MP, Chamber of Commerce and Mayor.

The 26-year-old with a £100m sportswear brand

Ben Francis started Gymshark when he was only 19 years old, back in 2012 when he was a full-time student in the day, and pizza delivery man by night. "I'd wake up and go to Aston University, Birmingham, then finish uni early afternoon, and work at Pizza Hut from 5pm till 10pm," he says. "I could answer emails about Gymshark in between deliveries. Then I'd go home and sort out the website, and design new products." After two years of working hard and with annual revenues of the business hitting an impressive £250,000- Ben quit university and the pizza delivery to focus on his company. Today, Gymshark is expected to reach a turnover of £100m. Before Ben set up the business in 2012 it is fair to say that the entrepreneurial

Ben Francis started Gymshark when he was only 19 years old

flare was always in him. When he was younger he set up a website that sold car license plates. Ben is a gymgoer, so he launched two Iphone fitness tracking apps, one of which earned him around £8,000. The idea of Gymshark came about from an online retail business aimed at fitness fanatics that originally sold health supplements. "I was going to the gym and basically was interested in, and wanted to be involved in, the fitness industry," he says. "I wanted to combine that with making a transactional website." However, Ben soon found out that the profit margins from selling the supplements were too low, he dived into another area which was clothing. "I remember looking around, and I couldn't find any clothing I wanted to

wear," he says. "So, I said, 'let's make it ourselves.'" Ben gathered a few friends and is brother to help with the clothing line. Ben brought a sewing machine, screen printer and started to make gym vets and t-shirts in his parent’s garage. Now Ben admits that after Gymshark first moved into clothing there was no grand plan regarding growing the business. "It was more a case of 'I really want to wear this,' so I made it," he says. The company started to make body builder vests that fitted slim teenagers as the ones on the market were designed for old men who had already built up their muscle bulk. Six years later, Gymshark now has more than 1.2 million customers, and 215 employees at its Solihull headquarters in the West Midlands.

£50m City Centre Apartment Revealed

Derelict Site To Be The New BCU Hub

The Forum, in Pershore Street, is the latest build-torent project in the city and is currently being developed on the old Silver Blades ice rink. The £50 million residential scheme in Birmingham is looking to complete later this year. Led by German property investment manager Patrizia Immobilien, the 11-storey complex will contain 333 apartments and is due to be finished in November. The building will have a private roof terrace, with allotment plots and views of the city centre, landscaped internal courtyard, outdoor performance space, a pizza oven and BBQ facilities. There will also be a lounge for residents, private gym and a guest suite with a kitchen and dining room for hire or overnight stays. Contractor Bouygues UK is leading the construction.

Birmingham City University (BCU) is bringing a derelict piece of the city’s heritage back to life as a venue for collaboration between academia and business in a bid to incubate the next wave of industrial innovation in the city. BS5 and BS3 (in Bristol), M32 (in Manchester), S18 (in Sheffield) and B27 (in Birmingham) take the top spots as the easiest areas to be selling a house. NW8 (St John's Wood) is the hardest UK postcode to sell in for a second month in a row, falling 33 per cent year on year. In fact, SW10 (Chelsea) and WC2 (central London) were the only postcodes in the capital to record growth in buyer demand since September 2017.

Fury and Wilder Separated at Press Conference

Two heavyweight boxers had to have their first press conference abandoned after both rivals clashed on stage on Monday 1st October in London. Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder had to be separated after Fury got up out of his seat and asked Wilder to demonstrate his punching power, with the American responding by pushing his rival. Fury dismissed suggestions he was the "challenger" to Wilder, before igniting the growing tension between them by getting out of his seat and demanding the American join him for a "body spar". The 30-year-old's promoter Frank Warren was forced to stand between them as Wilder agreed, before then being helped by others as the press conference ended with the two fighters on their feet shouting at each other. "I am no challenger for no man. I'm the linear heavyweight champion of the world, the best of the best," Fury said. Fury taunted Wilder, calling

him a "bottle job", and added: "You think this is a game? I'll punch your face in. You've got power then, let me feel that power boy. "I want to feel it. I feel 10 of you. Hit that big bald head. "You'll feel the wrath, hell has no fury like Tyson Fury." Wilder, 32, is also undefeated, and has stopped each of his previous 39 opponents. Wilder said: "It's important to establish dominance. I say I'm the best, the baddest man on the planet. "When it comes to Tyson Fury, I'm all about devastating knock-outs, it's what I do. "He's got two months to get ready, he lost a lot of weight; he's got to lose a little more. "We can't live off others' opinions. You'll know what time it is, you come here to see one thing, me knocking somebody out." The pair began their press tour ahead of the December 1 bout in Los Angeles at the BT Sport studios and will also visit New York and LA.
