Time really does fly when you’re having fun, doesn’t it? I’m not sure how it’s happened, but it’s already been eight months since the release of our last print issue, The Noise Issue. You’re probably wondering why we waited so long for the next release. The truth is that we’re still in the very early stages of building Atlas as a business. After the Noise Issue, we needed to take a step back, re-evaluate what we were doing, and come back with a bang. If you’ve picked this magazine up anywhere outside of the UK, it’s proof that we certainly have.

The dream since the very beginning has been to make Atlas available in print worldwide, and with the Delicate Issue, it’s finally happened. We get to share with the world (and Megan even gets to see it in New York!)

I knew at age 14 that I wanted to be a photographer. When asked by my dad what I wanted for my 16th birthday, I told him that all I really wanted was a 35mm film camera. There was no other option!

I always knew that taking photos was exactly what I wanted to be doing.

Interview with: minoux Jewellery

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up on a farm on the Oregon Coast, so I’m a country girl at the core. A summer day spent at a Pacific Northwest river with friends and a picnic is my idea of perfection.

I’m mad for shoes, clothes and great design–– but I’m also deeply aware of their environmental and human impact. It’s important to me to honor the age-old human instinct for adornment, but also to make conscious choices about owning fewer, better things that are responsibly made.

How did your interest in jewellery begin?

I had just graduated from college with a degree in political science. I intended to go to law school but was realizing that law wasn’t what I wanted to do. So I saved up for about a year, then spent some time travelling.

While in India, I came across a small jewellery stand, and I could see the owners in the back, using an open flame to solder silver. On whim, I asked if they offered lessons, which they did.

It was the first time I had ever soldered or made a ring, and I was incredibly struck by the skill of the artisans I learned from, and the laborintensive techniques.

What steps did you take to become a jewellery designer?

Mostly lots of trial and error! It’s been a pretty organic process, with generous advice and input from talented folks along the way.

What does “Minoux” mean?

I chose it because I liked the look of the word written down. But also my understanding is that it’s French plural slang for “kitten,” kind of like pussycat, sometimes with the same slang reference to a woman’s body as in English. It’s great when people reclaim power over words meant to hurt them.

Where do you get the inspiration for your pieces?

Practically every shape I see out in the world automatically gets turned over in my mind as a potential jewelry design, and I like to look at mid-century fabrics for shapes as well.

I have a relatively strict guiding principal; only designs that I feel personally excited about wearing make the cut. So for a new collection, I go through the stacks of scrap paper that I’m constantly scribbling ideas on, then reject 98% of ideas as things I probably wouldn’t wear as a go-to piece. It’s the 2% left that make it to the prototype stage, and ideas still tend to shift a lot from that point.

You use recycled silver, bronze and gold for your pieces where you can. Why is it so important to you to do so?

Mining metals has a heavy environmental impact, and I take our collective responsibility to mitigate this as much as possible very seriously.
