welcome Hello and welcome to our new schools newsletter! I’m Gwennan Mair, Director of the Creative Engagement team here at Theatr Clwyd. We work with you, our schools and colleges, to support you, making sure that learning through the arts is accessible and making this your theatre. This newsletter is also new, so if there’s anything missing or that would make it more useful then please drop me an e-mail. It’s divided into different sections with information about some of the forthcoming shows at Theatr Clwyd, but also information about the many opportunities there are to work together! Please feel free to contact me as I would love to hear about your ideas for ways we can all work together, I would be delighted to come to your school to meet with you and your pupils.... so please invite me as that would be brilliant! How To Be A Kid by Sarah McDonald-Hughes What’s it about: It’s a lovely story about a little girl (Molly) who is the rock in her family. She cooks, does the dishes and gets her little brother ready for school. But she’s only 12 and doesn’t feel like a kid! When: 24 June - 22 July

 Key Stage: KS2, KS3 Workshop: Our “full day” theatre experiences includes watching the show and a workshop run by Theatr Clwyd’s Creative Engagement team. It’s an opportunity to develop speaking skills, teamwork, creative thinking, movement and using their imaginations to create stories. Enrich your lessons: This show is perfect for using as a cornerstone to developing comprehension, speaking, literacy, working with others, response and analysis and creative writing and thinking! Welsh New Curriculum for 2018: This is a great way of intertwining text with a practical workshop. Let’s create young people that are enterprising, creative contributors who area ready to play a full part in life and work. Oes Rhaid i Mi Ddeffro? Do I Have To Wake Up? What’s it about: An interactive show about a magical world with music, dance, flying and dreams. With 2 showings in Welsh and 1 in English. Sleeping Beauty: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto What’s it about: Our legendary panto is the perfect ending to a year with songs, dance, hilarious jokes and plenty of fun! When: 24 Nov - 20 Jan Cost: From £10

The Importance Of Being Earnest What’s it about: A classic comedy about mistaken identity. National Theatre: My Country What’s it about: A new show created from interviews with people across the UK and then assembled by Carol Ann Duffy and directed by National Theatre director Rufus Norris. Perfect for drama students. When: 30 May - 3 June Cost: From £10

Kneehigh: Tristan & Yseult What’s it about: The story of a king who falls head over heels in love with his enemy’s sister. The acclaimed Kneehigh Theatre bring this show with comedy and live music. When: 27 June - 1 July Cost: From £10

Y Tŵr What’s it about: An intimate opera about love and life exploring the extremes of emotion experienced by two lovers. Based on the work of Gwenlyn Parry. When: 5 Jun Cost: From £10

Go&See (For schools in Wales only) What is it: Go&See is a scheme that can be used to fund visits to high-quality arts events in galleries, theatres, arts centers and other venues. Events could include visits to performances and exhibitions or visits to experience arts professionals developing and creating their work. What next: Schools can apply for up to £1,000 at any time in the year and will receive a decision within six-eight weeks. They can award up to 90% of the costs of the experience. There is no deadline for Go and See, which means you can apply at any time but will need to do so at least 8 weeks in advance of the event you wish to attend.. Edau Professional Development Funding Edau offers free professional development opportunities for teachers, artists and cultural organisations. Edau also offers to contribute towards the cost of supply teachers, so that schools are able to release teachers for training. creative.learning@arts.wales

Writing a theatre review Are your students interested in theatre, dance, visual art, gigs, poetry, film and more? Want to access a free workshop, which will give you an insight into the role of a critic? Then, this is for you! The workshop will be BSL supported. It will be suitable for D/deaf, hard-of-hearing and visually impaired participants. All participants will be able to access the workshop for FREE and see The Importance of Being Earnest for FREE. Daniel Owen Prize Do you have a student who’s a passionate writer? Does your school want to promote creative writing? In September, we will be offering workshops with a professional writer at your school! 3 categories: under 11 | under 17 | under 25 Theme this year: Peace - what does the word mean to you? | Work can be Welsh or English Prize: Become one of our young writers of the year here at Clwyd: an opportunity to co-write with us for the Llangollen International Eisteddfod children’s day! North Wales Open for Young Artists We host the prestigious North Wales Open for Young Artists, a competition for young artists under the age of 16.
