If we have not met, my name is Andrew Harker, and I serve as the Editor-in-Chief of The Avion, the student-run publication here at Embry-Riddle. Our goal is still the same: informing the student body. This semester, we once again push the narrative to better serve the student body by informing, educating, and bridging the gap between issues from the student body, the Student Government Association, and the administration here at Embry-Riddle. If you are returning from the Fall or if this is your first semester, regardless of where you are on your journey, welcome. I myself enter this semester with bittersweet emotions as this is my final semester here. Yet, let’s make the most of it. There are many things I have learned during my time here. Yet, two specific things stand out amongst the rest at this moment. First, is that we are more alike than we are different. Don’t hear what I’m not saying. Do I believe we are all unique? Yes. But I’m talking about when we peel back the different layers, personalities, and masks we use to protect ourselves. It can and is scary. This year alone will be one of the great challenges not only in the global scheme but also in our own personal lives. At the end of the day, regardless of who you are, we are all striving for similar outcomes. Try not to forget that in the sea of chaos or as you get swept up in the Jetstream. Secondly, be authentic; I know you’re thinking, yes, I know, but do you really? Being authentic is hard, and you’ll often hear the phrase, “You need to calm down” or “act normal.” Yet, what is even normal? Why do we need to calm down? We are all unique individuals, which should be celebrated and not pushed away in the name of conformity. Learning that not everyone wants the best for you and that sometimes breaking the norms can lead to positive change makes this easier. Within The Avion, we continue to push the narrative of digging deeper. A theme that has been the backbone of our organization this academic year. This semester, we continue to push even deeper by introducing the themes of vulnerability and risk in our organization. The Avion is currently working on new projects and initiatives to push the boundaries of positively impacting the Riddle community. Yes, this may come as a change and seem scary. Yet, the goal is to make small ripples to better inform and educate the ERAU community. Enjoy this semester, be good to one another, and remember that at the end of the day, we’re all imperfect, and that’s perfectly ok, just as long as we keep growing. God Bless, Andrew Harker Editor-in-Chief, !"#$%&'()$

Every hour that passes by, every minute that ticks, every second that comes and goes, there is a story waiting to be told. You are probably thinking, “Well, what do I have to tell?” and you would be very wrong. If Shakespeare were an introvert, would we have “Romeo and Juliet”? If Alexander Hamilton just stopped sharing his opinion, would we have The Federalist Papers? If F. Scott Fitzgerald decided that he just was not feeling it, would there even be “The Great Gatsby” to torture you in high school? The answer is that without storytelling, there are no stories that will be shared. Nonetheless, writing is important, and it is just one of the many tools that we have at our disposal to tell a story. Now, I’m fairly certain that none of you are at a Shakespeare or Agatha Christie level, and truthfully, neither am I. However, what I do have is a love for writing and a passion for telling the stories that need to be told. This is exactly why I am beyond thrilled to be the News Editor of The Avion. However, much like the Wikipedia advertisement that you see about once or twice a year, we need your help. Imagine you write an article and eagerly wait for it to be printed, to be read by the hundreds, if not more, of students who pick up our issues. If I’m being honest, it’s kind of scary at first. Writing for an audience of about a thousand is a little offputting. But it is so incredibly rewarding. Maybe writing isn’t your thing. Well, then there is this magical invention that is also used to capture stories, the camera. You could take pictures of a big race at the Daytona International Speedway or travel off to Miami to go see an airshow. The possibilities are truly endless.
For those of you who are maybe just starting out here at Embry-Riddle, I am sure that there is much to be foretold. As for me, I am writing this on the plane ride to go back to my hometown in the middle of Missouri. Yes, that is an actual state. Even though I am going home, I’m still working, though, because this year’s theme for The Avion is “digging deeper,” and I want to share a little bit about what that truly means. For me, it means reporting the news and telling students about issues that others are facing. It means getting more feedback from the student body and knowing the thoughts of not just our staff members, but every member of the Embry-Riddle community. With this, we are starting to include some traditional journalism back into our publication, and starting with this first issue of the Spring 2024 semester, you will start to see some of the everyday problems that we, as students, are facing. Tying back to the theme for this year, we will be digging deeper into our student organizations, our student government, its different divisions, and how we are working to inform the student body of what the story is at Embry-Riddle. Alas, I encourage each of you to consider writing for The Avion, and if writing is not your thing, you can take some awesome photos. I know that this university is very challenging, but in order to maintain not only your physical health, but your mental health and well-being, it is worth going out of your comfort zone and taking the road less traveled. I am beyond excited to be your News Editor, and I hope that you’ll consider sharing your own stories with us. Submit your stories, student news, and more to news@theavion.com. We can’t wait to read them!

Celebrating the lives of renowned poet Langston Hughes and Nobel Prize-winning storyteller John Steinbeck, “Keepers of the Dream” brings the two together to discuss art, social issues, and the American dream. Written by local poet and author Joseph Cavanaugh, the inspiration behind his production was described in an interview with Rachael Tran, a Staff Designer for The Avion. “I find our world today is in such conflict that I wanted to present the opportunity for people to experience through these two literary giants and their ideas and their writings.” Cavanaugh said, “They both had the same social message, and that people can get along together. They can respect each other. They can have a way of relating that does not involve conflict. And so, I just wanted to put that out into the world.” Other notable contributors include Deborah McShane, the production’s director; Becki Sanford, a pianist who will perform improvisations on Langston Hughes’s poets and jazz classics; Dove Dupree, the 2023 Blackberry Peach National Poetry Slam Championships winner, who will be portraying Langston Hughes; and Chris Patterson, a local actor, director, and producer who will be portraying John Steinbeck. During the interview with Mr. Cavanaugh, he mentioned his desire for the play to ‘appear all over the country’ and ‘not just have it be a local play.’ Lucky for us, the first six performances are here in the Daytona area. “Keepers of the Dream” will be opening to the public in February, with opening night scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9, at New Smyrna High School.

Can’t make that performance? Don’t worry, below is a list of other performances. • Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.: Museum of Arts and Science in Daytona Beach • Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m.: Museum of Arts and Science in Daytona Beach • Friday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m.: Carleton Union Building at Stetson University • Saturday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.: Carleton Union Building at Stetson University • Sunday, Feb 18. At 2:30 p.m.: Carleton Union Building at Stetson University Student admission is free with a student ID, and they are both welcomed and encouraged to come as Mr. Cavanaugh hopes to reach a broad audience, including people of all ages and races. Mr. Cavanaugh envisions that the themes presented in “Keepers of the Dream” will be considered ‘cool or fashionable’ amongst our generation, stimulating conversation and action. So, if you are free on a February afternoon, consider attending one of the “Keepers of the Dream” shows to experience a feeling of unity and harmony.

Hello there! My name is Alisa Tiselska, and I am a Copy Editor at The Avion. I am also a senior in the Astronomy & Astrophysics program. Today, I will take you back to the beginning of January when I attended my first astronomy conference. This experience was one of the most exciting events of my college career, and I wanted to highlight what I gained from this unique trip.
taken a multi-faceted approach to tackle this question. The team’s presentation at the American Astronomical Society meeting focused on determining the reliability of the stellar rotational periods obtained from their experimental pipelines, which deal with photometry data from various space missions such as Kepler, K2, and TESS.
At the beginning of January, the streets of New Orleans were flooded with astronomers and physicists from all over the country. These astronomers had one thing in common: a name tag with their name and the American Astronomical Society (AAS) logo written on it. The conference had over 3,500 attendees, including professors, astronomy and physics Ph.D. candidates, and undergraduate students from all over the world. This event was filled with lectures, press conferences, workshops, and scientific talks on dark matter, cosmology, stellar evolution, astrobiology, and more. Both graduate and undergraduates alike showcased their research in iPosters, surrounded by potential employers and professors looking with keen interest for their next Ph.D. candidate. The conference lasted five days, with many flying in to take in the city sights several days before. Most days ended with informal networking events at local restaurants or bars.
One way they are selecting our target stars is using an artificial intelligence (AI) model; a project headed by Krystian Confeiteiro, a senior Astronomy & Astrophysics student. Additionally, Krystian is working on their data analysis pipeline with Dr. Derek Buzasi and Melinda Walls, both from Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). The AI model will work as the ‘decision-maker’ of the front end of the pipeline, which will decide if the telescope’s raw image is either ‘good’ or ‘bad’—negating the need for manual analysis. The model’s complexity can be increased based on our goals.
Over a dozen Embry-Riddle students had the pleasure of attending this conference. They presented their iPosters on research, ranging from white dwarfs to stellar behaviors. Our Eagles had a major presence at the 243rd AAS meeting, including a presentation from the Physical Sciences Department’s gyrochronology research team, led by Dr. Terry Oswalt. Gyrochronology is a relatively new subfield in astronomy. For stars with masses similar to that of our sun, the age can be estimated based on how fast it is spinning, e.g., the Earth’s 24-hour rotation period. Over the last couple of years, the team has ()*+",
To fully prove the scope and accuracy of the gyrochronological fit, stars with longer periods than currently measured by individual missions are needed. Ahnika Gee, a junior in the Astronomy & Astrophysics program, spends the majority of her time working on this problem with GAIA, TESS, Kepler, K2, and data she took herself from ground observations. She does this by combining multiple light curves, utilizing the specific wavelengths of the filters, known instrumental errors, and calculating the best-fitted sine curves for each mission. She uses the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP) to extract peaks and can find novel methods to combine different sources to bring greater accuracy and precision to slow-rotating stars. She spends the rest of the time with the team, training newer students on data reduction. Her experience collecting and processing the data of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) telescopes allows her to easily train multiple people to observe and start their research projects.
Ryan Reynolds, a senior in our Astronomy & Astrophysics program, worked on mitigating the issue of blended light curves and recovering accurate rotational periods from contaminated data. “Put simply, a blended light curve means that the imaging camera has captured light from two different stars rather than just one, so the resulting light curve has features from both of the stars instead of one or the other,” Ryan said when asked about the nature of blended light curves. His work focuses on using the LSP, a mathematical algorithm that recovers the frequencies of repeating patterns in data. For blended light curves, Ryan observed that the LSP is ideal for uniquely defining rotational periods. If they can get this to work for real light curves, it will open up a lot of data for their gyrochronology analysis that the team could not previously use. I attended the gyrochronology presentation on Jan. 9. The following day, I presented my research on white dwarfs and stellar evolution. I work with Dr. Ted von Hippel, the head of the Astronomy Department here at Embry-Riddle; however, he was not able to attend the conference. Our goal is to determine the ages of stellar populations in the Milky Way. The ages of halo stars-- the oldest stars in the galaxy-- may help estimate the age of the Milky Way. We found only a single relevant star, most likely a white dwarf, or dying star. Its age turned out to be 5.62 billion years, which is lower than the expected age of the universe. This could mean one of two things: we need to look at an even bigger sample of stars, or we discover something brand new. I tend to lean towards the first option. Although we looked at quite a few stars, we need to study an even larger sample next time. Studying a greater sample of stars could help us pinpoint more white dwarfs. Even though we, as astrophysicists, are always trying to solve the intricate riddles of the universe, we do take breaks occasionally. Life on Earth can be just as exciting as life in space. New Orleans was an incredible location for this conference, full of beautiful jazz, amazing food and drinks, and wonderful people. I enjoyed exploring this breathtaking and vibrant city with my gyrochronology friends. The memories we made, the people we met, and the joy for astronomy that we all shared at this conference will forever be a moment in time we cherish.

United Launch Alliance (ULA) has finally launched its long-awaited Vulcan Centaur rocket. This rocket is the first methane-fueled rocket from the United States. It may replace both the Delta IV and Atlas V family of rockets while being more powerful and, hopefully, more cost-effective than both. Vulcan Centaur’s first launch consisted of the base package of the rocket: a single core stage with two solid rocket boosters on the side and a Centaur upper stage fueled by liquid hydrogen. Why is methane such a big deal? It should take the best aspects of the two most common fuels used while negating their most annoying side effects. RP-1, used in rockets like the Falcon VIII and Atlas V, is essentially ultra-refined kerosine. It is very energy-dense and easy to handle but has problems clogging up engines and isn’t very efficient. On the other end of the spectrum, liquid hydrogen, used by the Delta IV, is the most efficient chemical fuel. However, this fuel is the least dense, requiring large and heavy tanks. On top of that, it is the smallest molecule, so it can seemingly leak out of solid metal connections, which makes handling and storage a nightmare. Liquid methane solves both of these problems; it is more energy-dense than hydrogen, more efficient than RP-1, and helps avoid clogging issues. Vulcan has been in development since 2014 and was initially set to launch in 2020, but after multiple setbacks, it wasn’t until Jan. 8, 2024, that it finally took to the skies. Some setbacks include one of its engine tests, which caused an explosion and significant damage to the test stand. Without Blue Origin’s BE-4 engine being cleared and certified, ULA could not commit to a launch. This setback wasn’t the only problem with testing; an incident occurred when testing the Centaur upper stage. It unexpectedly exploded or underwent a rapid unscheduled disassembly caused by a small hydrogen leak that met an ignition source. Lastly, Vulcan Centaur may be one of the last nonreusable rockets to ever be designed. Reusability poses significant design problems. However, once all the issues are ironed out and the refurbishment process is well understood, it is possible to save huge amounts of money reusing a rocket rather than just throwing it away after every launch. ULA decided to split this problem into two parts: design a relatively cheap and powerful rocket and then start thinking about some way of reusing the engines if it makes economic sense.

It is hard to know when you are in the dark if that is all you have ever known. For many students, the SGA has been this mystery that has existed, and it was just assumed that there would come a time when students would actively know the SGA’s processes and procedures. That time has come, and it starts with you asking questions. After all, there was just one question that was asked which prompted this entire article. One question that could potentially change the dynamic between the SGA and the student body for many years to come.
“Do you know who your student senators are?” The Student Senate is a branch of the SGA which serves as a bridge between the student body and the administration of the university. The Avion asked a group of 25 students a more general question: “Do you know what the Student Government Association does?” While The Avion understands that this is a small polling number, there is still a need to better inform the student body about what the SGA does overall. Most students gave vague answers, but no one was 100% certain. This somewhat proved that there is this disconnect between the SGA and the student body. What is the SGA though? The SGA is a group of student leaders who take on tasks relating to news, entertainment, medical care, finances, legalities and so much more. Nearly the entirety of the SGA is housed in the Student Leadership Suite (SLS) on the second floor of the Student Union.
When you want to appeal your parking tickets, the SGA handles that. When you want to get funding for your Registered Student Organization (RSO) the SGA does that too. What happens though when the SGA is not all on the same page? Without the umbrella that is the SGA, the student body would fall apart. For example, there would not be a shuttle service to take you back to your apartment. More importantly, you wouldn’t have a place to go to when you wanted to make positive change. That is what the Student Senate helps to accomplish. After further investigation, The Avion learned that In addition, articles of impeachment were filed in late November. During the December hearing, a verdict of “not responsible” was reached. The Avion acknowledges that these two events are not directly related. As of Jan. 18, College of Aviation senator, Ander Turueno Garcia has been appointed as the new vice president of the SGA. Your next question might be, “What does the vice president even do?” The SGA Campus Groups website says that the VP is the chair of the Student Senate and sits on the SGA Executive Board, which consists of various leadership positions within the SGA. Nonetheless, the VP’s main role is to ensure that the Student Senate continually reaches out to the student body. In the past, senators have worked on projects that allow them to connect with students. An example is the fifth-floor study space in the College of Arts and Sciences. These projects aim to educate the students on how to reach out if they notice any areas of improvement with their respective colleges or how to get involved in Student Government if they are still determining where to start.
Meet the new VP!
Ander Turueno Garcia
WHO AM I? Hi, I’m Ander! I am a student at Embry-Riddle because of my love and passion for aviation. Mexico City was the place where I was born and raised until I moved to Daytona for college. I am graduating with a B.S. in Aeronautical Science with minors in Air Traffic Control and Airline Operations. My experience with the SGA Senate takes me back to 2021, and I have served in the SGA ever since as COA Senator. My leadership experience outside of the classroom and the SGA is being the President of the ALPA ACE Club, President of the Flight Professional Conduct Board, Co-Chair of the COA Dean’s Student Advisory Board, and more. I love to fly for lunch, ride, skydive, and explore new places during my free time. A fun fact about me is that I don’t like spicy food.
:3%'!;8/"'<:!=> “Did you even expect to be the new vice president? How do you plan to move forward from last semester?” !"#%$':1$1%"/'?)$58)'<!:?=> “To be honest, I didn’t expect to be the new vice president. After the vice president stepped down, a few senators came up to me and were like, “Yeah, we’re gonna nominate you for VP.” My plan for the Senate is to rewind, and once we are all on the same page, then we can continue moving forward.” :!> “So, why should students care about the Student Senate?” !:?> “Students pay the SGA fee each semester and since the Senate is the communicators of the SGA. I really feel like as a student that we should care about the Senate because it is just like the state; you reach out to your state representative to make changes, which is the same way that the Student Senate is here at EmbryRiddle.”
:!> “How do you plan to bridge the gap between the SGA and the student body as the new vice president?” !:?> “Genuinely reaching out to the student body. Nothing too crazy — just talking to the RSOs that we are a part of, even just for five minutes, we can make impacts that will help students to realize what we offer as the Student Government Association.” :!> “Finally, how do we move forward? How do we do better as an SGA and as students?” !:?> “So, looking forward is looking at mistakes and seeing what did and did not work and then just caring about making those changes happen. If a student shows up to your office, you must make them heard. Oftentimes, students don’t know what we are capable of. Many times, I have had people reach out to me because they know that I am in the SGA. I want to show them that the SGA, and the Senate, is capable of so much more.”
“...Looking forward is looking at mistakes...”
The Avion’s interview with Ander provided many insights into the situation, especially since he has now stepped up to the role of vice president. However, The Avion was still left in the dark regarding why the impeachment trial was even brought up and why the former vice president eventually stepped down. The Avion reached out to the SGA president, Evgeniia “Jane” Egorova, who provided an official statement.

Students at Embry-Riddle come from far and wide, but we all probably had one thing in common over winter break – abnormal weather. For many who typically see a beautiful white Christmas, this year was wet, brown, and unusually warm. In fact, 2023 was the least expansive white Christmas the nation has seen in over 20 years. In 2022, more than 50% of the lower 48 states had snow on the ground on Christmas Day; in 2023, that number was only 17%. High temperatures in Minneapolis on Christmas Day entered the 50s, breaking a century-old record, and inches of rain were measured in lieu of snow. As we all returned to campus, tornadoes and severe winds billowed across Florida, coupled with heavy rainfall totals. Unseasonal weather is being seen all around. Why is this occurring? In Issue 2 from last fall, The Avion reported on a strong developing El Nino, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting a 95% chance that a strong El Nino would last through the winter. During El Nino periods, the southern United States sees wet and cool conditions, and the northern United States sees warm and dry conditions, hence the warm and brown Christmas for many. It is obvious with the unusual recent weather that the NOAA El Nino forecast has been verified, and this abnormal pattern is here to stay, but for how long?
Percent of Average Precipitation
Recent weather conditions across the US follow the typical El Nino parameters quite well. In the maps below, one can see that over the last 90 days, the Midwest has seen a particularly warm winter so far, with temperatures 3 degrees above average. The deep south has seen temperatures 1-2 degrees below average. The precipitation pattern has not followed typical El Nino conditions as nicely as the temperature values have, simply because not all El Nino years are the same, and there are many factors that dictate how impactful an El Nino is. However, here in Florida, we have seen precipitation amounts totaling as much as double what we normally would see in the past 90 days. In the latest update prepared by NOAA, as of Jan. 8, it was reported that El Nino conditions are still What does this mean for you? being observed, with an expected As we enter the summer months, transition back to a neutral weaththe impacts from El Nino should er pattern sometime between April weaken, and we will see a shift and June 2024. On Jan. 5, 2024, at 5:07 p.m., Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 took off from Portland International Airport in Oregon, destined for Ontario International Airport in California in a Boeing 737 MAX 9. Shortly after this takeoff, a plug door next to seat 26A completely detached during its ascent, leaving a hole in the fuselage and a depressurized cabin. This incident now has serious implications for the entire aeronautical community. How will this major incident affect Boeing? After numerous disasters, what will happen to one of the world’s biggest aerospace companies? The first major red flag for the company was when the FAA grounded all Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes while an investigation began on the damaged plane. After United found deficiencies in its own 737
These repeated incidents have made investors understandably very worried about the future of Boeing. Since Flight 1282 happened, Boeing stock has dropped 14%, and many airlines canceled or put holds on their orders to buy planes. Investors may still pull back from participating in Boeing stock due to the lawsuits from the passengers of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282. In one of these lawsuits, the lawyers state, “The reason we sued Boeing was because the defect appears to be a Boeing defect.” Statements such as that couldn’t possibly sit well with investors and customers. So, what is in the future for Boeing? Do they face an inevitable end to their company due to the struggles to produce planes without defects? Surprisingly, no. Even in the midst of this scandal, Boeing seems to be improving already. The FAA will soon wrap up its investigation into Boeing, and in perhaps the most unexpected news of the industry, Alaska Airlines has decided to buy even more 737 MAX planes. It appears as though despite any major incidents, Boeing will proceed to bounce back without consequences.
MAX 9 aircraft, it became a manufacturing issue. This is not the first time that Boeing has had serious issues with its planes, resulting in a ban on them flying; for instance, the controversial crashes of two 737 MAX 8s in 2018 and 2019 due to a software issue, resulting in the deaths of over 300 people, led to a grounding of those planes from March 2019 to December 2020. As of Jan. 17, the FAA is taking a closer look at Boeing’s manufacturing, production, and design divisions to discern the problem, To learn more, scan the QR codes provided at the and guarantees that none of these modified planes bottom of the page. are going back in the air until all have been properly inspected and fixed.

'(**,"&7=&*4"&':(#>4"% Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, was a game filled with many firsts for a few organizations on campus, including The Avion. The Avion is working with the Athletics department to improve our athletics content. It was also a big day for our ROTC students; during halftime was the commander’s cup, a fun and friendly competition between each branch of our ROTC program. The game did not just consist of firsts, though. Wednesday’s game was the last game that a fan-favorite individual, The Young Professor, also known as Matt Graifer, would be the MC of the student section. There were lots of fun media timeout activities: from the hilariously funny cornhole from the top of the bleachers to the awe-inspiring former Embry-Riddle faculty member and retired Army General Donnely delivering the game ball to the referees at the start of the game. Shortly after, a joint ROTC branch, Cologuard Detail, presented the flags of each branch in addition to the American flag. After the national anthem ended, the lights went dark, and our Embry-Riddle Eagles ran out onto the court. #32 Danny Sully headed the tip-off. The Commander’s Cup theme was in full swing at halftime, and a large rope was brought out. Quite a few Army and Air Force ROTC Cadets faced each other in a game of tugof-war. Before that, there were a few other games and activities, from army crawling to fun banter between the branches. It was a fun night for all our ROTC cadets. At the end of halftime, it was clear that there was one winner above the others for the coveted Commander’s Cup: our Air Force Cadets. !"##$%&'()*+!,-+./$0'(+1-"2/3452*+ ?7#&@,"%%(#9:7&ABCDEF&G:(9;(*"&1"#27:&AHD&I"(:%&7,9E !
