Hello & Welcome

W

elcome back and Happy New Year! I am Johan Restrepo, your Student Government Association President. There are some great things that are coming in the Spring that you should all look forward to. For example, coming from a long retirement, the Carnival will be back! The last time we had it was in the Spring of 2019. Get ready for Blue and Gold Week, an awesome comedian on March 26, and a lot more! The Spring semester is going to be fun and action-packed. This is the best time for you all to make the memories to carry on for years to come. In my welcome back in the Fall 2021 semester, I encouraged you to “step outside your comfort zone” and really take advantage of all this University has to offer, from student organizations to a wide variety of academic minors. This semester, I want you all to really start exploring your true passion and dreams beyond your time here at Embry-Riddle. In the wise words of Sir Issac Newton, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” This University is equipped with the resources and faculty to help YOU do just that. We are not telling you to just follow in the footsteps of our alumni that came before us but to exceed past your limits and go even further than what our alumni have accomplished. To the seniors that are going to be walking across that stage in just a handful of months, CONGRATULATIONS. You all have seen many things, you all are also the last class to have experienced our old brick Student Union and we were one of the few for the grand opening of the current Student Union. Treasure these last moments because the next time you will see me, it will be on your special day! I wish you all the best for the semester and year ahead. Go Eagles! Johan Restrepo President, Student Government Association Global Conflict Studies Senior

Advice From

Upperclassmen

“For many students entering college, it can be incredibly challenging and even be a scary time in life. But entering into college during the spring semester can seem even more complicated from an outside perspective. Most students enter college during the fall semester. The opportunity to meet new people and connect is seemingly more effortless as many events are put on or hosted by the school. Yet, entering into a place where connections are previously established may be more challenging for many. But fear not, it is a new semester where opportunities are open - clubs, organizations, and people are looking for the chance to meet others. I, for one, entered my time at Embry-Riddle differently, yet similar to many of you. I joined as an online transfer student during the fall of 2020. Yet, although happening during difficult situations, the people I met are some of my favorite individuals, and I have grown incredibly close to them. It may sound like a broken record but go and put yourself out there. Study in the library or the Student Union, experience on-campus events and sign up for clubs you may not be totally interested in at first. Still, you’ll meet people and start recognizing faces around campus. Allow yourself to be able to meet new people and experience new things. It may become a story to tell.” Andrew Harker Aviation Business Administration Junior

“Beginning your tertiary education with thousands of other students can be an overwhelming experience in itself. But international students face additional challenges and new experiences relating to culture shock, homesickness, and even a lack of belongingness. As such, the Caribbean Students’ Association (CSA) at Embry-Riddle was formed as a place for Caribbean students to call a home away from home. Our consecutive receipt of the People’s Choice Award is backed by our strong on-campus presence, particularly known for our famous finger-licking “Jerk Wednesdays”! Laughter, fun, and excitement are just a few of the many things one can expect when attending our general body meetings, held every Thursday at 7 pm. You are welcome to join. We are more than just a club, we are a family - “divided by water, united by culture”.” Jeralyn Harrigan President of the Caribbean Students’ Association (CSA) Page 4

“So you’ve made it to ERAU – Congratulations! My name is Jovon Thomas and I am an Aerospace Engineering Junior and currently serve as an Associate Justice on the Student Court. The time you spend here will probably be one of the best in your life, but it may seem intimidating at first. Here’s some tips and tricks to get you through this journey. Firstly, BE YOURSELF! Always be true to yourself and who you are. Never feel that you need to change to fit in. Such temptation can lead to peer pressure which is never good. Secondly, get involved on campus. There are over 200 clubs on campus, along with the Student Government Association, that cover a wide range of activities. You’re guaranteed to find at least one or two that gauge your interest. These clubs do not only provide a good opportunity to make new friends with similar interests, but also show employers that you’re involved in campus life. Trust me, they look for these things. My last piece of advice is to know your limits and your priorities. Remember, you came to college to get an education and it can be easy to lose sight of your goals. It is always good to push your limits, but also know how much you can handle at a time. Keeping these in mind, the next few years should be smooth sailing for you!” Jovon Thomas Aerospace Engineering Junior

“Originally from Jordan, I have lived my entire life in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; therefore, I consider it my hometown. I am a senior majoring in Aeronautical Science and minoring in Business Administration. I am part of the Orientation Team, the PEER Mentor Program, and the Webmaster for The Avion. At Embry-Riddle, I have learned that everything becomes easier when you start involving yourself on campus or just being present for important events. In this way, you start making connections, which is an important aspect for any college student’s future. Another thing I learned is never to be afraid or shy to use all resources provided for students, whether it be scholarships, professor office hours, tutoring labs, etc. A resource I used was the PEER Mentor Program, which has helped me practice interviewing, figure out talking points for effective communication, and plan a strategic way to succeed at Embry-Riddle. Overall, you have to remember that being in college is a crucial building block required to have a successful career life; moreover, you have to go through it by working smarter, not harder and do not forget to have fun while doing it.” Samir Khairi Aeronautical Science Senior Page 5

New Year, New Semester— Tips to Keep Track of your New Life With the start of the new year, it can be nice to reset and reorganize, and then take on the year in new ways. Starting college can also be seen as a reset, as some are away from home for the first time, some are wanting to expand their horizons, and some are furthering their current careers. Whatever the reason, college can be a rollercoaster of experiences, and it can admittedly get overwhelming at times. Between classes, a social life, hobbies, and even eating regular meals, the college experience can feel like being stuck in an ocean.

If you are a more digitally-oriented person, you can import your Canvas calendar into your Outlook Calendar connected to your ERAU email. To do this, download the calendar feed from Canvas’ calendar page and when you open the file, it should automatically import it into Outlook! If your Outlook Calendar is synced with the calendar on your phone, then anything in the imported Canvas calendar will show up on your phone’s calendar too and send you reminders as well.

Another way to keep track of assignments and projects I would like to share some tips, tricks, and strategies is using web extensions for Canvas. One I particularly that have personally helped me to manage the different like is Canvas+, which displays your grade and lists aspects of my college life, in the hopes that it may help upcoming assignments, and their due dates, on the others keep their life organized! Canvas Dashboard page. Keep a Schedule It may seem like the most obvious way to keep organized, but there are so many ways to create and organize schedules, it might be hard to pick a helpful style. There are websites such as “freecollegeschedulemaker.com” which is a simple and easy way to input your classes, and an easy way to visualize gaps of time in your day that you can spend doing other things.

Do Stuff with Friends! Find a solid group of classmates and/or friends who can make sure everyone in the group is accountable. Even if you don’t take the same classes, sometimes just having another person or a small group can make the work a bit more bearable.

If you are studying with a group of classmates, then the work might get done faster with everyone’s collective While it may seem excessive to some, others might find knowledge working towards the same end goal. If you it helpful to schedule their days down to the minute. Plan choose to study in these group settings, always make what you think is necessary to make sure you have time to sure by the end everyone has reached the same level of do the things you need to do and want to do. If that means understanding and completed the work they set out to scheduling when you eat and sleep, then go for it. complete during the study session. Organize Assignments

Whichever tips you choose to take, I hope some of this information will help you tackle the new year—and Keeping assignments and projects in order is key to college life—so you can enjoy it to the fullest! After all, the college success, and one thing I find helpful is writing down college experience is making sure you get what you want the due dates of assignments on a whiteboard calendar. out of the work, relationships, and events that you attend. Having a physical reminder of when assignments are due is handy, and it is especially satisfying to erase and watch Article by Mikyla Berish, News Editor the calendar empty over a month. Page 6

confLict management An Important and Inevitable Skill in College: A Brief Guide Conflict is something that at one point or another we must all face as we go about our days, and college is no different. However, we may not always know how to handle conflict with other people, whether it be our close friends, roommates, or anyone else. Because of this, I wish to impart upon you all some advice on how to properly deal with conflict in a college setting. Always hear the other side of the story This is often times the hardest thing to do when we are upset. We want to believe we are always in the right, but that may not always be the case. By hearing why others did what they did, or lack thereof, you may come to reach a better understanding of the situation as well as their position. It may even cause you to realize that you, yourself, could have mishandled the situation, or that perhaps that there was no one in the right or in the wrong.

Considering the other side of the story can be done online, or in person, and it always shows the initiative to manage and resolve the conflict. Depending on the situation, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for a third party to be present as a mediator. Apologize at the appropriate level When we realize we are in the wrong, most of us apologize and seek forgiveness. But sometimes, an apology might make the situation worse. If you were to hurt someone’s feelings, for example, and you apologize to that someone with them then asking you to give them some distance, then give them what they want. There is no need to go further immediately - simply comply with each party’s request as they all manage their conflict and healing differently. If the level of your apology exceeds the action that you caused, then you may cause more harm than you originally did.

Keeping that in mind, if the roles were reversed, you should be able to accept an apology at the same level of the action caused. Never escalate the situation This is one of the most important things to remember- no matter what may happen, you never want to escalate the situation further. Let’s say someone you know insulted you, the last thing you’d want to do is start spreading rumors about them in an effort to seek any sort of “revenge.” This will do nothing more but make the situation more dramatic. You should never lower yourself to the other person’s level. Instead, you should try to manage the conflict healthily and make sure the situation is handled in a manner which upholds the respect of all parties. I hope the advice I give can help you to not just handle conflict in college, but beyond as well. Article by Salim Roig, Editor-in-Chief

Ranking Study Spots on Campus

...................................................................................................... At Embry-Riddle, you’ll be sure to find some of your favorite food spots, hangout spots, and other neat areas around campus. From our state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, to awesome spaces for student activities, we’re never really short on having the right resources for something. I’m sure you’re also going to be doing quite a bit of studying during your time here, so I’ll be assessing some nice study spots on campus for you to discover as well. ...................................................................................................... Adapted from an article by Carly McDonald

Each spot will be assessed using the following categories: Comfort (C): How comfortable is the spot? Could I sleep here, even though I shouldn’t? Volume (V): Is it quiet here? Again, could I fall asleep with the noise in the background? Academic Productivity (AP): Do I actually do work here, or just procrastinate? Do I get distracted easily? Proximity to Food (PtF): Studying requires snacks. How far away is some sort of snack or food? SPOT ONE: My Dorm Desk C: Very comfortable. I also bought a blanket and wore a sweatshirt since my room can get cold. I’ve also never been able to fall asleep at a desk, which is good if I want to be productive. 9/10. V: Completely varies. People screaming and running down the hallways can be distracting. Of course, suitemates make noise, too, but if asked, they are more than happy to be quiet. 7/10. AP: It’s my dorm, it faces the airport, and I love my suitemates who can sometimes get my off-topic. But again, if I ask, they’re more than happy to quiet down. 7/10. PtF: Again, it’s my dorm. There’s always food somewhere... and I have a snack bin literally right behind me. 10/10. TOTAL SCORE: 33/40 Best for studying: Overall, in my opinion. SPOT TWO: Residence Halls Study Rooms C: Comfortable, depending on the chair. Soft plush chairs are obviously more comfortable than the hard wood and metal ones. Total toss-up, but usually good enough to study. 7/10. V: Pretty quiet, except if another person is in there with you, then that’s obviously going to add some noise. 7/10. AP: It’s a study room, so intuitively, I feel more inclined to do work. 8/10. PtF: Only if you bring it. But it’s allowed in here. 8/10 TOTAL SCORE: 30/40 Best for studying: With a friend, especially if you need help from them.

SPOT THREE: The Main Areas of the Student Union C: Comfortable. The chairs in the Student Union are pretty soft. Choose your spot weirdly. 7/10. V: It’s the Student Union. If you’re there during the day, it’s pretty loud. There’s usually music and other people talking in the background. It’s more peaceful at night. 5/10. AP: I never really get much work done, mainly because someone will pass by and say hello. And then I’ll get distracted... whoops. 3/10. PtF: Depending on what part you study in, you might be steps away from food. You can also bring your own snacks. And if you want, you can study in Starbucks. 9/10. TOTAL SCORE: 24/40 Best for studying: When you want to study, but don’t really want to. SPOT FOUR: Student Union Study Rooms C: The chairs are nice; they’re vertically adjustable. Not bad. 7/10. V: It’s quieter than the main area of the Student Union, but nowhere is quite soundproof. On certain days, WIKD might play music in the commons, so it depends on the day. 6/10. AP: Being in the study rooms allows you to not focus as much on those around you and who passes by. The first floor study rooms are also slightly tucked away, so it’s less likely to be distracted. 7/10. PtF: Again, it depends. The first floor gets you really close to dining facilities. But if you’re on the third floor, for example, you’ll have to walk down. 9/10. TOTAL SCORE: 29/40 Best for studying: With friends on non-urgent assignments. SPOT FIVE: The Top of the AMS Building C: Completely depends on the weather! If it’s hot out, then it’ll be hot. If it’s cold, then bring a jacket. It could also be raining - it’s outside, after all. The only chairs are the metal benches and tables... or the ground. 5/10. V: Usually quietly decent. This spot overlooks the airport, so expect planes taking off and landing, including the big ol’ jets with their roaring engines. Overall, not too distracting with the noise. 7/10. AP: Extremely subjective! If you like the background noise of airport operations, then here isn’t too bad. But if you’ll be distracted easily by those jets, then you might want to choose another location. 7/10. PtF: You’re not near anything that you can buy, but you’re more than welcome to bring food. 7/10. All photos provided by: Carly McDonald

TOTAL SCORE: 26/40 Best for studying: Just a generally good place to get work done.
