Volusia County leads Florida for most unprovoked shark attacks Volusia County ranked #1 in Florida for shark attacks Alena Thompson Editor-in-Chief
Daytona Beach is a great place to catch the sun, enjoy the water and have overall nice clean fun. Or is it? During the summer it seems almost a common occurrence of the news reporting shark bites in Florida. With all these reports it may feel that instead of the beach being a fun place for all friends and family, it may just be a feeding ground for these hungry predators. In Florida Sea Grant states there are mainly nine different species of shark in Florida that

range in size from only a few feet to a total of 40 feet or more. A shark simply 6 feet or longer can provide a fatal bite. The predominant species to grow this size and attack humans are bull sharks, tiger sharks and great white sharks. It is safe to say that none of these species are common in the Florida waters. However, according to Animal Planet, Volusia County is the number one place for unprovoked shark attacks outranking the entire state of California and the entire country of Australia. With 242 shark attacks to date from 1882-2011 outranking all other counties in Florida and

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 10, 2012) — Constancia Malahias, a student at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, hopes the public will help her win a $25,000 college scholarship in the Bridgestone Americas Teens Drive Smart Video Contest. Malahias is one of 10 contestants whose videos have been selected in the national scholarship competition. The contest challenges 16-to 21-year old students to create short videos about safe driving and ways to make better decisions behind the wheel. Malahias’ video was chosen from 2,322 entries received by Bridgestone Americas. A panel of judges selected the top 10 most compelling videos, which were chosen based on how well they encourage viewers to be more safetyconscious drivers and how effectively and creatively the message is communicated. All 10 videos, including Malahias’, are now posted at TeensDriveSmart. com. The public can help determine the top three winners by voting online for their favorite video now through July 23.
The three winners will receive college scholarships: first place receives $25,000; second place receives $15,000 and third place receives $10,000. All three will win trips to New York City, where the grand prize-winning video will be unveiled on Aug. 1. In addition to the scholarship, the first place winner will have his or her video air on the MTV Jumbotron in Times Square in New York during the month of August. Each Teens Drive Smart winner will also have the chance to have his or her video used as a public service announcement (PSA) on television stations across the United States. Malahias’ takes the viewpoint of a cell phone in her video, frustrated because her owner turned her off in the car. She says the idea originated from a few Super Bowl commercials that included people acting as inanimate objects. “It’s important to realize that the phone’s feelings won’t be hurt if you

Interim Chief Justice Throughout these busy summer months here at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, we have seen many changes on our campus from new speed humps, to new parking lots being constructed. These changes are being made for the students, faculty, and staff of our campus in order to create a more safe and efficient environment. As a campus, we have had the luxury of having relaxed parking for both Summer A and Summer B while some of us attend to classes. As a reminder, the Daytona Beach Parking & Traffic Committee recommended all campus parking lots, with the exception of Tomcat Lot, Eagle Lot and Mustang North, will be modified to allow for general parking during the four day work week. The effective dates for these temporary conditions are from May 11, 2012 through August 16, 2012. Remember that all special purpose areas such as University Vehicle Parking, Visitor Parking, Handicap Parking, and timed (meter, signs) zones are not included as general parking. If you have any questions, please visit or call the Parking & Traffic Services office at

386-226-6482. The Parking & Traffic Services office is located adjacent to the main entrance of the Student Center and serves as the central point of contact for all campus parking services. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, the University requires all vehicles (cars, motorcycles and mopeds) to be registered with the Parking & Traffic Services Office. Bicycles must also be registered. At the time of registration, you will be able to purchase a registration decal and will receive a copy of the Parking & Traffic Rules & Regulations manual. There is no charge for bicycle registration. Temporary and visitor permits are also available. Parking citation appeal forms are obtained through this office, as well. Vehicles observed committing a parking or moving violation are subject to ticketing, with the registered owner being responsible for the designated fine. If you let someone use your car, be sure that they are aware of the campus rules. Come by the Student Government Association office for pamphlet information on the parking rules and regulations if you have any questions or concerns! Stay safe this summer and enjoy the relaxed parking while it lasts.

Featured News A5 Virgin Galactic to develop new small rocket for small satellites Page
The Avion,
July 17, 2012
Matthew Ellengold Staff Reporter
At England’s famous Farnborough International Airshow last Wed, Virgin Galactic unveiled plans to develop a new microsatellite launch vehicle – LauncherOne. With a projected lift capability of 500 lb to low Earth orbit, the booster will be uniquely suited to meet the needs of the presently underserved low-end launch market. In a world where
everything electronic is shrinking, a whole new class of launch customers is entering the market. These customers are typically smaller institutions including colleges and universities empowered to enter the space business for the first time by the new generation of small satellites made possible by our shrinking electronic world. Weighing between 22 and 220 lbs, these so called microsatellites are presently forced to “piggy-back” with their
bigger brethren on large conventional launchers. Typically, it is cost prohibitive for microsatellite operators to buy a dedicated launch for their mission because the excess capacity of the launch platform is so great. However, the cost savings achieved through ride share agreements comes at the cost of mission flexibility. Secondary payloads are at all times subservient to the demands of the prime payload mission. This may force all manner of undesirable requirements and con-
straints on the secondary payloads from driving the launch timeline to limiting options for orbital placement. Therefore, the market is ripe for a launch services provided to step in with a new class of launch vehicle tailored to the needs of these small satellite operators. Virgin Galactic hopes to answer these needs, promising affordable dedicated flights of microsatellites o LauncherOne by 2016.

Coke Zero 400 won by Stewart Christopher Heale Managing Editor
Over the Independence day weekend, revellers from around the country flocked to Daytona for the second of the years big race events the Coke Zero 400. NASCAR can split the opinion of the locals, while some detest the influx of people, the noise, and the traffic, the sport remains one of the most watched in the U.S. The 800hp engines, the 200mph speeds, the mass crashes, along with a day out with friends and family are all part of what attracts fans of the sport. The Subway Jalapeño 250 is the first event of the weekend and forms part of the Nationwide series. The Nationwide series is touted as the ‘minor league’ of NASCAR and acts as a proving ground for the younger drivers. The race took place in dramatic circumstances as lighting and thunder roared around the speedway. Kurt Busch ended up winning the race in a privately owned Chevrolet after 49 lead changes and several large crashes. Danica Patrick looked fast during the race and was running second after a large crash in lap 65. However she was left disappointed after being t-boned out of the race in lap 82. The main event, however, is the Coke Zero 400 which is race 18 in the Sprint Cup series. The 400 mile race involving 160 laps of Daytona’s famous circuit
THE COKE ZERO 400 came to an exciting climax as Tony Stewart emerged from a last lap wreck to win the race despite Matt Kenseth leading for 124 laps of the race began at 7:50 p.m. Following the calamity of the Daytona 500 in February, which was postponed until Monday due to weather, and saw Juan Pablo Montoya crash into a jet drier truck. The Coke Zero was more focused on the racing. Matt Kenseth started the race on pole, and early on in the race, very few moves were being made. Kenseth, coupled with teammate Greg Biffle held the lead for 124 of the 160 laps of the race and looked dominant in the front of the field.
However the inevitable wrecks came and Tony Stewart was able to pull apart the pair and get the lead with Jeff Burton slipping in behind him. Stewart held the lead from laps 131-151, until Kenseth was able to re-gain the lead for the closing laps. But in an exciting finish Stewart was able to re-take the lead on the last lap and win the race. The win moves Stewart up four places in the Sprint Cup standings to 5th place, while Kenseth remains top despite finish-
ing 3rd in the race.
Entertainment A6 Rockstar scores another violent, entertaining hit with Max Payne 3 Page
The Avion,
July 17, 2012
Tim Campanaro
Business Manager In a summer that has been mostly slow for notable console game releases, Rockstar releases an absolute gem. Payne returns again to wallow in the dark events from the prior games in which both his wife and daughter were killed. Payne transfers from the shanty and dark ridden atmosphere of Hoboken, New Jersey to the vibrant and bright nightclub life of Sao Paulo, Brazil. However, the events from the past don’t disappear regardless of Payne’s new residence with just more difficult situations and circumstances occurring. Regardless of everything that has changed, Payne still self-inflicts punishment on his body with constant boozing and pill popping because of tremendous guilt about his losses in New Jersey. This story has Payne trying, which is the key term, to protect a wealthy family in Sao Paulo, the Brancos. They appear to be helping out the poor favelas with their charitable contributions. Eventually though our protagonist Max Payne finds himself trapped in yet another whirlwind of mess and confusion with several corrupt factions of Sao Paulo attempting to take out the Branco’s loved ones as well as the Brancos themselves. Whether one is well versed in the Max Payne series or a novice to it, they will be able to pick up on the story and undoubt-
edly be gripped and sucked into a mesmerizing and telling turn of events. The voice actor James McCaffrey makes Max Payne such a compelling character with his gritty and highly irritated voice. The game feels like a Hollywood production in terms of the amazing cut scenes. They have this very trippy multicolored effect that really embodies the drugged out life of Max Payne which adds to the development of the story and how messed up the current state of Payne is. McCaffrey Photo courtesy of Rockstar games delivers these really depressing narratives throughout the game too that help the player understand why he takes the amazingly foolish risks such as jumping off rooftops and charging multiple shooters head on. These type of risks show the blatant disregard he has for his own life. There
are several gameplay mechanics that really make this game extremely satisfying to play. When the player has shot someone’s kneecaps out or shoots a bullet straight into the head of an enemy the player might find themselves slightly cringing. The blood splatters and animations of enemies when shot in different areas look very true to form. However the most insatiable feature has to be Rockstar’s Bullet Time effect. This effect occurs when the player shoots the final enemy in a particular checkpoint. The camera slows down and follows the bullet that will kill the last enemy in slow motion. You can also hold another button down on the controller to slow down the bullets even more and really see them do the complete amount of damage. At these points during the game the players will feel absolutely giddy for the amazing looking shot they have pulled off and feel some sense of grief for the AI enemy at the same time.
If there was one lingering flaw or drawback to this game it would be the lack of choices and decisions the player is able to make. This game is not sandbox or open world at all. There is no real exploration and the game already has predetermined decisions that the player will make. This may be expected with the Noir film style and brilliant scripts. When one plays this game they will never feel helpless and that doesn’t really add to the realism. They will always generally know where to go and what to do. For instance, when Max Payne finds himself trapped in the poor and ravaged favelas with multiple gang members gunning him down, the setting should probably be more explorable because Payne will obviously be very lost and desperately seeking a way out. This would show a real sense of completeness in gameplay and story and add to the confused dialogue that Payne recites while in the Favelas. The only issue that the game possesses is the linear gameplay even throughout the end. There are no glaring weaknesses within this game besides this. The player will most likely be fine because of the brilliant twists and turns that the story slingshots their way. The soundtrack only gives the dialogue even more juicy goodness because it has a sort of drudgy (yes I just made up that word) slow suspenseful feeling to it. If the player thinks of this game as a movie first and a game second then they will have a delightful time playing.
Ted keeps audiences entertained
Ted
Christopher Heale Managing Editor
TED is the first feature length movie from the maker of family guy, Seth McFarlane. The story tells of a young boy named John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), who after having no friends as a child, wishes that his teddy bear would come to life. After his wish is granted, John and his bear ‘Ted’ (voiced by McFarlane) vow to be the best of friends for life. While the formative years remain innocent and involve making dens, riding bicycles, and playing games. Things change as the pair becomes older. Having been a minor celebrity in childhood, Ted grows into a life of partying, hook-

TED’s STORY IS at times predictable but the humor and setpieces keep on coming, providing laughs from start to finish. ers and debauchery. However, the pair’s adolescent/partying lifestyle takes its toll on John relationship with girlfriend Lori (played by Mila Kunis). Lori wants Ted to move into his own place, and for John (now 35) to grow up so they can get on with their relationship and life. But John’s attachment to Ted means he keeps going back to his old ways Explicit, crass and sometimes very random, Ted’s humor will be very familiar to fans of the Family Guy TV show.
However the movie provides a good mix of comedy, love story, and tender moments. The plot, which is essentially a twist on the buddy movie, sets up its comedic scenes very well and there is a natural if predictable flow to the story. While the language is explicit, it’s never just for the sake of being explicit like some movies, and always fits in with the joke. One of the best scenes involves the fulfillment of John and Ted’s childhood dream, as Sam Jones (Flash Gordon)
joins them for a house party with suitable chaos ensuing. McFarland clearly draws inspiration from his own youth with heavy references to 1980s culture which may be lost on some younger audience members. Ted has an original concept, which plays out very well and involves a number of very funny scenes. Although it is not a classic comedy and does nothing groundbreaking, Ted is a funny, lighthearted affair which will keep you entertained for most of its 106 minute run time.

Guest Reporter Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse off of Nova Rd. in Ormond is the place to go if you’re looking for sushi or hibachi. Not only is the food excellent and probably the best hibachi I’ve had, but the atmosphere and service is great too! The chef was hilarious and interacted well with me and my group of friends. He did all the great tricks, like the onion volcano and catching the eggs in his pocket. He also made lots of funny jokes. The waitress was awesome as well as she kept up with the drink refills and was always super sweet. There were so much yummy dishes to choose from, but I stuck with my usual. For an appetizer I had a plate of sushi which was a huge portion, almost enough to fill me up! The sushi menu is very extensive; lots of variety and choices. For the main course I had a chicken and shrimp combo dinner which came with clear onion soup, salad, chicken, shrimp, vegetables, sprouts, and lo mein. It was everything I could have asked for. The price is just as much as any other hibachi place (about $20 dollars) but for the amount of food you get it’s a great deal! I think
