A message from the Head of School

Dear Friends of the Baldwin Community,

Over the course of my first year as Baldwin’s Head of School, I’ve had the unique privilege of engaging and learning from myriad constituent groups that comprise our incredible community. I am continuously impressed with the inquisitive and insightful curiosity our students bring to their learning, guided by our talented faculty and staff, who are dedicated to not only the development of their students but also to their own professional growth. Their passion for teaching and learning is inspiring. As a member of the parent community, I recognize the steadfast commitment this group has for their daughters and for ensuring that they leave Baldwin with an outstanding education and the competency to make significant and enduring contributions to the world. Most importantly, our incredible alumnae have shown me that the bonds of sisterhood don’t cease to exist once our students leave our gates. The common thread found in all these groups is the deep sense of pride in belonging to this amazing community. I am continually grateful to be here and be immersed in it every day.

When I introduced last year’s theme of Community and Connection, it was to deepen the indelible connections that each of us has to one another and to Baldwin. From large community events like Reunion and Homecoming to studentled assemblies and school social events, it is not hard to see the genuine support we all have for each other as part of this unique community. When our current students share their knowledge with one another, whether it be the fourthgrade passion projects or the Senior externships, we become an even stronger community committed to an exemplary all-girls education. Even when meeting alumnae across the country, I was able to see not only the connections that were formed during their time on campus but that continue to this day. Their many years of friendship and sisterhood is a true testament to the power of a Baldwin education.

Gathering together as a community has also helped bring focus to, and support for, the educational and foundational needs of our School and our students. Through fundraising efforts, like True Blue for Baldwin Day, the Community Auction and Dinner, and the generous giving throughout the year, you helped raise $2,352,904 for The Baldwin Fund. This dedication to our School provides all Baldwin girls the resources they need for a successful academic year and helps Baldwin continue to provide an excellent educational experience for all students. With a strong foundation, our girls can accomplish anything they set out to.

It is with this in mind that I introduced our theme for this year – Love of Learning. From our most tenured faculty to our littlest bears, we are always encouraging an exploration of knowledge. We know that girls come to Baldwin to be able to delve into the academic passions that spark joy for them. From inquiry-based learning and interdisciplinary exploration to a renewed focus on building skills such as curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking to innovate new courses and intriguing electives, Baldwin continues to be at the forefront of best practices and educational initiatives. The year ahead is one of great promise and exciting endeavors here at Baldwin. All of this is made possible through the incredible and continuous generosity of our community. I know it will be an exciting year for Baldwin, and I encourage you to stay connected with us. Perhaps, our love of learning will inspire your own.

With immense gratitude,

Highlights 2023-2024

Facility improvements brighten our campus!

Baldwin’s campus saw no down time this past summer as multiple facility projects took place. In the Residence, the dining hall received a much-needed new floor, a fresh coat of paint and new chairs. The Middle School, located on the second floor, also received a new coat of paint brightening up our hallways and classrooms and making it a light-filled space. The Baldwin Archives will soon be complete much to the excitement of students and staff alike. With a new reading room and the Sheerr Boardroom, there will be plenty of new spaces to explore and learn from the artifacts in the archives.

Our Lower School also got a new coat of paint throughout and our Bears were welcomed back to a bright and lively space! Even our Early Childhood Center saw renovations as we made space for pre-Kindergarten that went from one class to two. We know our students will love learning in their refreshed spaces and can’t wait to see all the creativity and innovation that happens in our classrooms over the year.

Perhaps, our most exciting change to campus is our new outdoor social space. Designed for students, by students — the Class of 2024 played a special role in deciding on some of the features — the space next to the science building now is a place for our girls to relax and socialize after class. With Adirondack chairs, fire pit and even a special four square court dedicated to the Class of ‘24, this space will provide much needed additional outdoor student space. During this school year, students and faculty will be working to add native plants and rain barrels to the space as well. Thank you to all those who helped raise the funds for this space during the annual Raise the Paddle at our Community Gala and Auction.

Step Right Up!

Baldwin School Parents’ Association puts on “The Greatest Show” at the Annual Dinner and Auction and beyond!

This year’s Community Dinner and Auction was a night to remember. Co-Chairs Amy Schmid and Marlo Dilks treated guests to a circus themed event complete with acrobats and flame throwers. Attendees enjoyed delicious food and drinks while perusing the extensive silent auction and competing for bottles of wine at the wine toss. Once again, the live auction provided guests with the chance to bid on unique experiences for themselves and their Baldwin Bears – with a “sleep under” at Mrs. Macziewski’s house being the exciting new item this year.

Our incredible BSPA raised $244,506 this year for our students! Dedicating their time and talents to events like the Community Auction and Dinner, the Book Fair and B’Cycle they truly help our community come together to support our Bears.

Faculty and Staff Grant Awards

At the completion of the 2023-2024 school year, Baldwin awarded 21 faculty and staff members grants to pursue professional or personal development. These awards are an important and much anticipated event at the close of each year. From once-in-alifetime trips to thought-provoking conferences, these awards allow our faculty and staff to expand their minds and share their knowledge with our community. This year a new grant award was introduced, specifically for our staff members, that allowed them to pursue personal development through enrichment and restorative opportunities. Below, faculty member Dr. Erika Jo Brown and staff member Tracy Stevens recount their experiences after being awarded The William H. Simon, M.D. Faculty Enrichment Award in Science and the Humanities and The Staff Spotlight Award, respectively.

The William H. Simon, M.D. Faculty Enrichment Award in Science and the Humanities

Funding from The William H. Simon, M.D. Faculty Enrichment Award in Science and Humanities, has allowed for the creation of a Medicine and Literature class offered in this school year. Students in this course have participated in a rigorous curriculum of reading and writing on topics such as research ethics, end-of-life care and cross-cultural communication. Course content includes a play, podcast, short stories, poetry, and personal essays. The goal is for students to develop a holistic understanding of the human dimensions of healthcare. Students will complete a mini capstone project that proposes a grassroots solution to a definable bioethical problem. For real-life learning, the class has welcomed a Nurse Practitioner, neurologist, and OB-GYN to discuss their career paths. Students have also made care packages for patients undergoing chemo treatments at Lankenau Medical Center that included handpainted totes filled with novels, tissues and chapstick.

– Dr. Erika Jo Brown, English Teacher

The Staff Spotlight Award

I attended a five-day "Rest: A Retreat for Black Women" in Pompano Beach, FL. The retreat was amazing! The emphasis was on how we need to pour into ourselves before we can help others. We focused on how to reclaim our light, which we sometimes dim, in order to be accepted by others. I also learned through breath work, mantras and somatic exercise how to release stress. We had a "release" ceremony on the beach to wash away all that weighs us down — we cried, laughed and prayed together. I came away with a wonderful group of friends who I can call on should the need arise.

Celebrating the Classes of Purple

Baldwin was happy to welcome back close to 150 alumnae from our Classes of Purple for their Reunion this past May. Connections, old and new, were made at the Friday luncheon between the Class of 1974, celebrating their 50th Reunion, and the Class of 2024. Both classes mingled together at tables to share their own stories and memories of Baldwin. Lunch was followed by the Alumnae Awards panel, moderated by two members of the Senior class and Head of School Lynne Macziewski. In front of an audience of Upper School students, Sarah J. Burns ’74 was presented with the Award for Lifetime Achievement, Beth Morgan Hammack ’89 was presented with The Alumnae Award and Saleka Shyamalan ’14 was awarded The Distinguished Young Alumna Award in absentia. The Class of 1974 then headed to Krumrine House for a special cocktail reception before the all-class dinner. There, the Class of 1974 was awarded both the Champagne Challenge Cup and the Class of 1936 Reunion Challenge Bowl!

Saturday morning started with a new Trivia Scavenger Hunt to test alumnae’s knowledge of all things Baldwin! Friends from all milestone classes took part in the fun challenges that brought them all over campus and closer together as they worked to claim victory. This was followed by a discussion with Carolyn Jones Berry ’73, Baldwin’s Director Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and a conversation between Baldwin’s current Head of School and past Head of School, Blair D. Stambaugh. The on-campus events ended with a farewell reception before classes left to host their dinners and events. The Classes of Purple filled campus with the infectious energy of old friends and sisterhood, and we can't wait to have them back again soon.

Grandparents and Special Friends

Come to Campus!

After a five-year hiatus, Baldwin welcomed back grandparents and special friends to campus last May for a special day with our Lower School Bears. Over 250 guests were treated to performances from our Pre-K to 5th grade classes. After the morning concert, families and friends were invited to join students in their classrooms for an activity. This heartwarming day allowed our Bears to share their school day with some of their favorite people. The Baldwin community extends beyond our parents and alumnae and unique opportunities like Grandparents and Special Friends Day help us to connect throughout the year in meaningful ways with those that are not often on our campus.

Baldwin was True Blue for faculty and staff!

On April 10th, Baldwin classrooms were covered in colorful streamers as teachers and staff were celebrated during the annual True Blue for Baldwin Day of Giving.

From Bryn Mawr to Hawaii and everywhere in between, parents, alums and friends sent personal messages and memories of teachers and staff members that had a lasting impact on them or their daughters. Surprise celebrations took place throughout the day and were highlighted on Baldwin’s social media channels so everyone could join in on the fun! Our own B-Flats even composed an original True Blue song.

In addition to the celebrations, online challenges engaged donors and earned the current Class of Green students a dress down day, raised additional budget funds for Athletics and the Arts, and 80 amazing young alums showed up strong to unlock a $10,000 challenge to support our School. The result was a fun-filled day of joy on campus that raised $71,622 for The Baldwin Fund.
