HISTORY
Born out of a belief that when given the opportunity, girls grow into confident leaders and changemakers who make enduring contributions to the world, Florence Baldwin started The Baldwin School when many thought educating women was a prosperous extravagance.
More than 130 years later, The Baldwin School continues to champion the education of girls and young women as a leading independent, college preparatory school for girls. Guided by outstanding faculty, Baldwin offers an active, experiential learning environment within a supportive and encouraging community.
The mission of The Baldwin School is to develop talented girls into confident young women with vision, global understanding and the competency to make significant and enduring contributions to the world. The School nurtures students’ passion for intellectual rigor in academics, creativity in the arts and competition in athletics, forming women capable of leading their generation while leading balanced lives.
WHY AN ALL-GIRLS SCHOOL
Now, more than ever, an all-girls education provides students an invaluable opportunity at a crucial developmental time and helps girls become confident, thriving and perseverant young women. Our experience and commitment to an all-girls environment make us experts in how girls learn, flourish and succeed in school and life.
COUNTER GENDER STEREOTYPES
Baldwin girls believe anything is possible. Through an intentionally empowering environment that encourages students to expand their curiosity and explore their interests, our girls know their options are never limited by their gender. Starting with our youngest students, we create pathways for our girls to pursue any and all fields, countering cultural limitations and eliminating preconceived stereotypes.
Role models are woven throughout our program— female scientists, authors and artists. Our girls grow up with an unshakable confidence that any door is open and they can be leaders in any field. At Baldwin, every student’s passion can become a reality.
CREATE A VIBRANT SISTERHOOD
Baldwin’s close-knit student body creates a deeply felt sisterhood amongst our girls of all ages. The tight sense of community is evident as you walk down our hallways, observe what happens in class, or watch how our students engage across divisions.
As part of this sisterhood, students feel supported by their peers and teachers. This leads naturally to increased collaboration as they share ideas and push each other to
take risks as they learn. Across all grades and disciplines, our girls are encouraged to engage in collaborative work, present their ideas confidently and learn from the lived experiences of others. This helps prepare Baldwin students for college and their careers and lives beyond our gates.
ENCOURAGE A GROWTH MINDSET
We help our girls learn that struggling with a challenging concept doesn’t mean they can’t understand it but don’t understand it yet. “Yet” shifts the feeling of defeat and re-energizes their learning. We encourage our students to tackle challenging problems or situations head-on and confidently, knowing that success often takes multiple iterations.
Baldwin’s focus on experiential, active learning helps girls cultivate this growth mindset. Students are taught to try, fail and maybe fail again, but keep trying. Our teachers work closely with each girl, in and out of the classroom, to give qualitative feedback and provide one-on-one time to meet each girl where she is throughout her learning journey. Baldwin’s mission-focused teaching methods ensure that our faculty effectively nurtures students’ resilience and passion for learning.
ACADEMICS
The Baldwin School provides a robust and expansive learning experience for girls. The School focuses on how girls learn best and what girls need to thrive. From Pre-K through Grade 12, the School creates confident and resilient learners who take pride in their work, challenge themselves to learn more and develop a curiosity about the world around them.
Girls will experience the thrill of scientific discovery, the joy of reading, the triumph of overcoming challenges and the satisfaction of seeing their own creations performed and displayed around the School.
Baldwin’s world-class faculty cultivate an environment that supports girls in their learning process, challenging them to tap into their interests, take risks and collaborate with others. Students are provided unique opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through programs and partnerships with the broader community. Faculty bring their expertise into the curriculum through a range of elective courses and co-curricular opportunities.

In the Lower School (Pre-K through Grade 5), selfcontained classes provide a strong foundation of learning skills in reading, writing, math and social studies. The breadth of content in co-curricular classes that incorporate technology, art, music, science, world languages, physical education, including our Learn to Swim© program, instills creativity and skills in the minds of our youngest girls.
Middle School (Grades 6 through 8) expands on this strong foundation by adding more in-depth exposure to science, math, technology, literary studies, world languages, history and cultural anthropology. The increased emphasis on the organization of material and information enhances students’ time management skills, confidence and independence.

The Upper School (Grades 9 through 12) offers a more individualized curriculum designed with a strong core of courses across the disciplines, through blended learning and curated challenges. Upon graduation, our well-rounded students are prepared for academic achievement at leading colleges and universities around the world.
“There is no place like Baldwin - I cannot imagine you can find better and more committed faculty than Baldwin teachers. The School is great because of its tradition, its programs and its student body, but it all trickles down from its phenomenal faculty members who become our daughter’s mentors and role models.”
— Claudia Baldassano (P ’18, ’23)
INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING
Baldwin has an endowed interdisciplinary program based on reasearch that indicates students engaging in this work have higher academic outcomes, enhanced critical thinking skills, a greater ability to transfer knowledge to new contexts, deeper and more complex conceptions of knowledge and longer-term retention of what they have learned. Giving Baldwin students the opportunity to develop these skills affords them a head start in college, where they can continue to build on a solid interdisciplinary foundation.
The Lower School Wyss Interdisciplinary Incubator and the Middle and Upper School Wyss Interdisciplinary Institute bring together two or more content areas, allowing students to deepen their knowledge of these content areas, while developing essential skills including collaboration, communication and problem-solving capabilities. These programs help students to more readily seek out and explore connections between and among disciplines and, in turn, see their learning as an organic, dynamic and exciting endeavor.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY and INCLUSION
Baldwin is dedicated to the significance of our diverse communities and is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all members feel valued and supported. We recognize and honor the individuals and groups that make up our communities and actively celebrate the unique perspectives and experiences of our students, families, faculty, staff, alums and leadership.
We maintain the highest standards regarding the experiences of our students, faculty and staff. We continuously cultivate a culture

of life-long learning that provides opportunities to grow and develop cultural competence and confidence. Baldwin’s environment fosters a foundation for curiosity. We also lead with intersectionality. We recognize that all members of our communities are multidimensional. We understand that no community is monolithic. Therefore, we build experiences and resources that reflect this nuance and advocate for individuals beyond a single identity to meet them at their intersections.
EARLY
Lower School at Baldwin provides a nurturing environment and an engaging curriculum intentionally tailored to how girls learn best – through collaboration, discussion and individualized attention. During the seven years that encapsulate a Lower School experience from Pre-K - Grade 5, children at Baldwin build a strong foundation that includes well-rounded academics, self advocacy and social-emotional skills. Essential for personal growth and development, this foundation is also necessary and intentional in its structure to prepare girls to succeed and thrive in Middle School and beyond. From discovering the world through inquiry and exploration to collaborating with peers and developing critical thinking skills, Baldwin thoughtfully and expertly offers an enriching education for young girls. The Baldwin School is where girls enjoy a welcoming community, learn in a safe, cooperative, supportive environment and make lifelong friends.
BEYOND the CLASSROOM
60% of recent Baldwin graduates are pursuing STEM studies in college. Beginning in Pre-K, students are building their passion in these fields through experiential learning opportunities in our DREAM Lab classes.
BEYOND the CLASSROOM CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS
Children are naturally curious and genuinely love to explore, discover and experience their surroundings. At Baldwin, we provide our girls with a creative, nurturing and secure environment that will foster a love of learning to carry with them throughout their lives.

RESILIENCE
90% OF THE 5TH GRADE
Lower School teachers have branched out into new content areas and collaborative partnerships. These projects bring together two or more content areas, allowing students to deepen their knowledge, while developing essential skills including collaboration, communication and problem-solving. The Lower School Wyss Interdisciplinary Incubator experience helps students to more readily seek out and explore connections between and among disciplines and, in turn, see their learning as an organic, dynamic and exciting endeavor!
MATH AND SCIENCE
In Lower School math, students are encouraged to explore the reasons behind mathematical concepts rather than simply focusing on procedures. This approach aims to foster deeper mathematical thinking and understanding. The Lower School Science program is designed to equip students with essential scientific skills and knowledge to benefit them throughout their education. The program includes hands-on learning opportunities in Earth and Space Science, Physical Science and Life Science, utilizing the Early Childhood Center, Lower School Science Labs and outdoor spaces on the campus.
LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
Developing a love of reading, listening, speaking and writing is a strong emphasis in the Lower School. Students grow into confident readers, writers and orators with their own unique voices as they progress through Lower School. By participating in, and eventually leading, Lower School assemblies, girls hone their listening and presenting skills in exciting ways like class plays. The study of French and Spanish offers girls an opportunity to explore world languages and cultures.
THE WORLD AROUND HER
Baldwin’s core values of learning, respect, responsibility, compassion and honesty are an ongoing theme in Lower School. Girls connect with these ideals as individuals and then, as they get older, use these ideals as a citizen of the world. They explore their own family roots and traditions and learn about other families and cultures through interactions with their classmates and teachers.
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL GROWTH
The Lower School Counselor collaborates closely with Lower School faculty members and families to holistically support the needs of students within the school setting, strategizing how to best support the academic, social and emotional development of all students in Pre-K - Grade 5. Our programs aim to help students build competencies in self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. The girls have weekly lessons with our school counselor exploring topics like feelings, friendship and conflict resolution.
“We are strong believers in the power of the student voice in guiding their learning and educational experience. The Baldwin School offers many opportunities for each girl to explore her passions, develop her confidence and build her competencies for future success. A Baldwin girl has the opportunity to become anything she wants to be.”
— Lynne Macziewski, Head of School
“I liked how welcoming everybody was during my tour. I didn’t feel like a visitor; it felt like I had already gone there. I chose to stay at Baldwin because people continue to be warm and inviting beyond the tour.”

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS
Middle School at Baldwin offers 6th to 8th-grade girls a unique opportunity for academic growth and personal self-discovery. It’s about more than gaining expertise; it’s about exploring the world around them and finding their passions. Students can immerse themselves in various subjects and experiential opportunities, in addition to arts, athletics and much more. At Baldwin, we urge girls to reflect on vital questions like their areas of excellence and the reasons behind them. While academics are essential, Baldwin places significant emphasis on young women’s intellectual development and emotional well-being. Our dedicated faculty and staff work together to create a supportive environment that nurtures relationshipbuilding, social-emotional growth and confidence, ensuring each student has a well-rounded and enriching experience through her middle school years.
EXPLORATIONS in STEAM
STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as resources for guiding inquiry and critical thinking. Middle School students focus on skill development including self-directed instruction, creativity, technological confidence, curiosity, communication and resilience. Whether it’s in our DREAM Lab (Design, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), on the stage, in math or science class, our STEAM education is a transition from a more concrete approach to a stronger emphasis on abstract thinking in problem-solving settings. Most important, our curriculum focuses on age-appropriate classroom discussions and hands-on activities that lead to a dynamic opportunity for independent thought and reasoning.
HUMANITIES
Middle School students further develop reading, writing and speaking skills while growing from concrete to more abstract thinkers. English classes utilize individualized vocabulary building tools, close reading strategies, effective writing skills and oral presentation techniques in Grades 6 - 8. The goal of the Middle School social studies program is to broaden the girls’ understanding of the world and their place in it, so courses employ a comparative approach as students study people from America as well as cultures from all over the world. The languages program equips middle schoolers to learn a foreign and classical language by studying the written and oral language as well as exploring culture through extracurricular activities and trips.
INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING
In the spring, students pause their regular coursework to participate in Baldwin’s Wyss Interdisciplinary Institute. Each student participates in a single class that studies one advanced topic in depth with expert faculty from different fields. The non-traditional schedule and intensive focus stimulate creativity and fresh perspective. Examples include: “Survivor: Baldwin Edition,” “Mind-Body Connection,” “Women Writing Women” and “Bear-Tank: The Art of Problem-Solving.”
LEADERSHIP AND CHARACTER
During Middle School, students are developing and refining their social-emotional skills, including empathy, confidence, social awareness and self-advocacy. A strong foundation in all of these areas will serve to support whatever pathway students choose to pursue in Upper School and beyond. Opportunities to grow leadership abound in the Middle School. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves in terms of time management, organization, social dynamics and resilience. In addition, students may take on named leadership positions within the Middle School’s grade level, club, service and student organizations.
TAILORED FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS
Baldwin provides many opportunities outside the classroom for Middle School girls to foster a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for learning as well as find emotional and educational support, embodying The Baldwin School’s mission to develop the whole child in a supportive, evolving environment.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT
There are many opportunities for leadership and membership in the Middle School. Senate, Service League, Athletic Association and Arts League make up the four Middle School student government organizations. Students may serve as an active member within the organizations or become an elected head as an eighth grader.
CLUBS
Clubs offer students the opportunity to explore a topic in depth, relax, learn something new, express themselves creatively or work on a community service project. With options ranging from computer science club to walking club, Middle School students can pursue their interests and try something new.
ATHLETIC TEAMS
Middle School marks the time when girls start to compete in sports, if they choose. With a variety of teams to select from, girls can continue to hone a sport they already play or try something new. They compete against other schools in the Inter-Ac and play both home and away games.
LEARNING SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT
As our students mature and encounter new experiences and challenges, support becomes even more multifaceted. Along with a student’s team of teachers and advisor, the Support and Enrichment team monitors student academic progress, collaborates closely with the Middle School Counselor and communicates regularly with faculty about student engagement, best practices in teaching and learning accommodations. The Middle School is now housed in a space designed specifically for the academic, social and emotional needs of Middle School girls. The second floor of our iconic Residence building has spacious classrooms, collaborative student spaces, administrative and student support offices and all of the technology and tools our Middle School students, teachers and program needs.
ADVISING
The goal of advising is to help Middle School girls build relationships with peers, become globally minded and responsible citizens and continue to develop organization and executive functioning skills. Each girl is placed in a small group of her grade-level peers and is assigned to a faculty advisor who serves as her advocate throughout the school year. Through small group discussion, one-onone interactions and tailored advisory lessons, Middle School girls challenge themselves, develop a solid foundation of social awareness skills and learn to be resilient in the face of academic and interpersonal circumstances.

diverse audiences and conveying ideas in a range of creative, digital and scholarly genres. In addition, girls have the opportunity to participate in our nationally recognized student newspaper, literary and language magazines and our research journal, which showcases the independent research conducted by our girls typically at university labs.
INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING
Baldwin’s students experience interdisciplinary learning throughout the school year in various projects and collaborations. In addition, in the spring, students pause in their regular coursework to participate in Baldwin’s Wyss Interdisciplinary Institute. Each student participates in a single class that studies one advanced topic in depth with expert faculty from different fields. The non-traditional schedule and intensive focus stimulate creativity and fresh perspective. Examples include: “Science and Well Being,” “The Mysterious Dark Ages,” “Let’s Build a Greenhouse,” “The Chemistry of Jewelry,” “By the Numbers: An Examination of Poverty, Inaccessible Resources and How it Affects Philadelphia” and many more.
BEYOND the CLASSROOM
ADVISING
Baldwin’s Upper School advisory program seeks to nurture the whole student in small, peer-based groups. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who remains with her for four years and meets with an advising group consisting of a small number of students and their advisor regularly to cover topics that are important to the life of Upper School students. In addition to Baldwin’s five core values— learning, respect, responsibility, compassion and honesty—the advisory program emphasizes problemsolving, openness, confidence and independence, leading to self-awareness and self-advocacy.
CLUBS
Through involvement in extracurricular activities, Upper School students take risks, learn new skills and become leaders. In addition to Senate, Service League, Arts League and the Athletic Association, participation in clubs and affinity groups encourages the girls to discover, explore and nurture their interests and talents.
EXTERNSHIPS
In May, Seniors have an uninterrupted four weeks
of experience off campus in compelling individual programs. They then present a project report to the student body on Senior Externship Day during the week of Commencement.
COLLEGE COUNSELING
The goal of the College Counseling staff is to work as a team with each family to help each girl reach her goals. Counselors meet with students individually, with families and in scheduled workshops with the entire class during the school day. Workshop topics include the college search process, campus visits, college interviews, financial aid, writing college essays and managing an important year. As the Seniors prepare to leave Baldwin, the advising and college counseling programs join to help the students develop strategies for a successful transition to college.
STUDENT SERVICES
The Learning and Writing Center encompasses math and language arts support and enrichment. Students may participate in regularly scheduled learning support as part of their course load as well as drop in at any time for support or to ask for help.
“The number one thing for me is the all-girls aspect. I think there’s a culture here that goes with the all-girls, but also the way they just specifically do it at Baldwin.”
— Tom Bachrach (P ’29, ’31)

ARTS
The arts are a vibrant element of the Baldwin community and an integral part of our students’ education. Through creative expression, our girls not only develop confidence but also learn new ways of thinking and knowing.
In addition to classroom instruction, Lower School students participate in a variety of interdisciplinary experiences that integrate the arts such as Grade 5 creating artifacts to complement their research on ancient Egypt and Kush. In Middle School, each girl is exposed to performing and visual arts through our drama classes, general music curriculum, instrumental and vocal music programming, 2-D art and graphic art electives. Offerings in the Upper School include electives in drawing, painting, jewelry, ceramics, photography and art history. In addition to musical theater and playwriting, performance opportunities include chorus, handbells, vocal, chamber and instrumental ensembles, as well as our award-winning B-Flats a cappella group.
The Simpson Center for the Performing Arts is the centerpiece to ensuring the arts remain an integral part of a Baldwin education.
ATHLETICS
Athletics are an integral part of the overall curriculum at Baldwin. Baldwin offers 16 sports programs, boasts state-of-the-art athletic facilities including a collegiate competition swimming pool, and is a member of the historic and competitive Inter-Academic Athletic League and Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association.

STUDENT LIFE
The Baldwin School prides itself on providing students with a well-rounded education that fosters curiosity, adventure and leadership and encourages participation in extracurricular programs that act as the cornerstone of “beyond the classroom” learning. The Middle and Upper Schools offer a wide range of clubs, organizations, community service opportunities and publications, including, but not limited to: Math Counts Club, BLAST (Building Leadership And Supporting Teams) Club, Enviro Club, Model UN, Black Students Union, Theater Club, The Hourglass student newspaper, three literary magazines and Business Club.
Five different class colors are assigned based on graduation year and Baldwin girls weave their class colors into a variety of traditions and activities through all three divisions, from costumes in Lower School to class banners and senior blazers in Upper School. Alumnae identify by their class colors and
each color returns to Baldwin every five years for reunion. Beyond the campus, Baldwin students engage with their community and the world. Baldwin has had educational exchange partnerships with organizations in Denmark, England and France. Additional travel and service learning opportunities are offered in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Canada and Europe.
Girls enjoy time-honored traditions throughout the year. Some favorites include BEAR (Be Excited About Reading) Day in Lower School when girls wear pajamas and bring their favorite book and stuffed animal or in Middle School when Baldwin girls have a fun and spirited game day against the Haverford School boys or in Upper School when the Grade 9 girls unveil their class banner to the rest of the school marking their entrance to high school. These are just a few of the traditions that link the greater sisterhood of Baldwin girls together.
