Anticipating What’s Next

In planning for The Future Is Baldwin, the School focused the campaign’s priorities on our greatest asset: Baldwin’s people—extraordinary educators and talented girls who, in the words of our mission, develop into “confident young women with vision, global understanding and the competency to make significant and enduring contributions to the world.”

We also realized how unpredictable the future is, how rapidly the world and workplace are evolving, and how much we have learned in recent years through Baldwin-driven research around authentic, interdisciplinary, project-based teaching and learning. In response, we envisioned a campaign geared to what girls need most to prepare for any future they might imagine.

The five campaign pillars were designed to advance Baldwin’s groundbreaking programs and curricula, and to ensure facilities keep pace with the spirit of innovation that thrives throughout campus.

Campaign Leadership

Dear Baldwin Friends,

This summer marked the conclusion of The Future Is Baldwin, the most successful fundraising campaign in the School’s 135year history. Closing this major philanthropic initiative was an exciting moment—not simply because we met or exceeded every goal we set but because we did so in single-minded service to Baldwin’s mission and our students and teachers.

As alumnae and Trustees, it was an honor and privilege to serve as the Chairs of this remarkable effort. Throughout, so many of you stepped forward and turned your Baldwin pride into tangible commitments to our School. Thanks to you, Baldwin is in a stronger position than it has ever been. Thanks to you, generations of future Baldwin women, more accomplished than ever before, will go on to make lasting changes in the world.

The campaign may be complete, but the positive momentum it created continues to inspire us. We invite you to read about the achievements we reached together in the pages ahead, which make clear the impact of this important chapter in our School’s story. With deep gratitude, we thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for Baldwin.

The Future Is Baldwin built phenomenal new spaces for our students and programs, including the Innovation Center, a DREAM Lab for our new Middle School in the Residence and an expanded Early Childhood Center. These new and renovated facilities ensure our graduates will BE READY to ask the right questions, lean into uncertainty in a fast-changing world, and create and collaborate with ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Dream Even Bigger

New spaces inspire student exploration and discovery across all divisions

Whether Baldwin is preparing a student to be an ambassador, astronaut or actor, the skills they need to be successful may not be the same ones taught by a traditional education system.

Powered by The Future Is Baldwin, we are reimagining our educational model with this in mind to nurture more flexible, collaborative problem-solvers who draw connections across disciplines, communicate across boundaries and work adeptly in teams.

Our youngest students have big dreams and adventures in mind, so we redesigned our Early Childhood Education Center to provide the foundation for a lifetime of explorations. The expanded space features classrooms designed to meet the developmental needs of four- through six-year-old girls.

Likewise, our new Middle School DREAM Lab establishes connections between learning in the classroom and the world beyond by teaching the techniques and technologies needed—not just for college, but for the workforce and world. Middle Schoolers learn to solve real-world problems with crafts like woodworking, computer-aided design, and whatever they imagine with our laser cutter and 3D printers.

Addison Lilholt, Chair of the Computer Science & Engineering Department, could not be more excited.

“The new DREAM Lab prepares our students for what lies ahead,” says Lilholt. “For example, we installed whiteboard tabletops to all of the workstations for capturing ideas easily. This is the kind of space that ensures anyone—students, colleagues, prospective students—feels inspired to turn inventiveness into real-world solutions.”

Perhaps the most impressive addition to Baldwin’s campus is our new state-of-the-art Innovation Center, which transformed our old pool house into an open, flexible academic hub, seamlessly integrating the latest technology with the architectural traditions of our campus.

This gorgeous space is a home to interdisciplinary teaching and learning across all classes, grades and divisions. The Innovation Center provides a place where outside experts can partner with faculty and students on projects that simulate work in the real world, where faculty collaborate on new courses and electives, and where students present their research to classmates, parents or a public audience.

The Future Is Baldwin touched nearly every corner of campus, ensuring our students and faculty are more prepared than ever to tackle the world’s most complex problems right here on campus.

Spaces to Grow

A Baldwin family pays forward the power of this exceptional education

John and Katherine Karamatsoukas P ’28, ’32 enjoy watching their girls have opportunities to take charge. That’s how they found Baldwin—and it’s what inspired their participation in The Future Is Baldwin.

“After she visited Baldwin for the first time, our daughter Angela said, ‘I’d really like to go to school here.’ She basically selected the school for herself and her sister,” recalls Katherine. “She loved the all-girl dynamic and wanted to be more challenged than she had been at her former school.”

The Karamatsoukases soon found that their daughter’s instincts were on the mark. They recognized that, from the earliest grades, Baldwin challenges girls to push themselves, find their own passions and even design their own learning.

“Baldwin helps our children develop a sense of grit, a capacity to overcome, the skillset to succeed— and succeed with grace—while always having an open mind to all possibilities,” John observes. “This approach understands that, with the obstacles and adversity these girls will face in life, they need to learn to resolve and problem-solve from an early age.”

Since joining Baldwin, Katherine and John quickly became engaged in the life of the school.

“There are so many great individuals in this community, all from very different backgrounds,” Katherine says. “Each year I’ve taken on more volunteer responsibilities, which is easy to do. Plus, we believe it is significant for children to see their parents involved, and if you are getting something important from a school, you need to give back.”

This passion for Baldwin carried into the campaign’s capital priorities, which the Karamatsoukases have supported with their time, expertise and resources.

“When [Head of School] Marisa Porges told us about the Innovation Center, I was excited to join the project team, because I knew it would be in my wheelhouse coming from the manufacturing side,” explains John.

“From a philanthropic standpoint, it’s a great opportunity because the Center advances the School’s vision for learning. And what a cool project! Visually, it puts the students in a central space to talk and commune with one another, and to study together formally and informally. It harkens back to the past with reminders that we’re sitting inside of what was once a pool, but it is clearly built with the future in mind.”

14 | BE READY

For us, BE READY represents Baldwin’s mission to prepare every student to answer questions years from now—when life gets a bit more challenging, more complicated, and the stakes are higher. With each passing school year, our daughters’ interests become a little more defined. Things they might want to do as a career one day are piquing their interest. Spaces like the Innovation Center and the Middle School DREAM Lab help move this process forward, as Baldwin students experience and act on their own ideas for the first time.”

Growing our endowment for all generations to come
17

The Future is Baldwin secured our financial health by growing Baldwin’s endowment, which is essential to our ability to provide the very best education, sustain our campus, and respond to opportunities and challenges for years to come. It is how we can all BE THERE for each other and for our school— bringing to life one of the most powerful aspects of our Baldwin sisterhood as we ensure the school we love remains strong and keeps evolving for future generations.

SELECT BENCHMARKS OF SUCCESS

• Fully endowed the Head of School’s on-campus home—Krumrine House.

• Grew our resources for financial aid, including the addition of three new endowed scholarships.

• Created a Cherry Tree Preservation Fund, which will sustain all aspects of our historic campus.

18 | BE THERE

Sustain and Grow the Extraordinary

Every year the cherry trees along our drive create new moments of beauty and wonder across campus. Come spring, their blossoms paint Baldwin in vibrant shades of pink and their aroma wafts across our playing fields and outdoor classrooms. Girls and teachers from every grade treasure these memories, as do our alumnae.

Endowment, the most important asset in terms of a school’s long-term financial health and sustainability, creates similarly powerful moments. Year in and year out, it sustains the School—generating a reliable stream of income that helps us maintain the campus, nurture new programs and respond to unexpected opportunities.

That’s why the endowment was a priority for The Future Is Baldwin. Our community responded with generosity and a keen understanding of what a larger endowment means to the School. Over the course of the campaign, new funds donated alongside a smart investment strategy helped us more than double Baldwin’s endowment. The impact is unmistakable. Our now-larger endowment provides critical resources for day-to-day operations, strengthens our ability to offer financial aid and enriches the student experience in countless ways. It also ensures we are

able to continue creating opportunities for future Baldwin girls.

Inspired by this vision, one group of alumnae, the Class of 1969, took action.

“Baldwin cannot continue to offer the best in girls’ education without a significant endowment,” says Diana Hole Stricker ’69. “My classmates and I are especially glad that Baldwin is addressing that need. We created the 50th Reunion Scholarship Fund because we know financial aid is essential to making a Baldwin education accessible to those who otherwise couldn’t afford it.”

New endowed funds created by the campaign also include, appropriately, the Cherry Tree Preservation Fund, which funds the care of this natural resource and helps maintain other aspects of our beautiful 25-acre campus. Other new endowed funds include:

• Eugenia Birdsall ’44 Scholarship Fund

• Jane Krumrine ’55 Endowment

• Nancy Corbit Lewars ’60 Scholarship Fund

• Local, Regional and International Project Fund

• Wyss Interdisciplinary Institute and Incubator

• Wyss Leadership Grant

The World Is Better Because of Baldwin

A Baldwin community leader wants our education to be there for girls—always

If you know Patricia Weiser P ’22, ’24, it’s no surprise that her proudest moments focus on education.

“My parents are both school teachers. Education has always been an important part of my life and my husband Rob’s life,” she explains. “Education is power. Education creates our brightest future.”

Last June was all about education for the Weiser family. Her daughter, Kaya Weiser ’22, graduated and set out to share her Baldwin-bred confidence and vision of the future at MIT. The month also marked the conclusion of The Future Is Baldwin campaign—a record-setting effort Pat enthusiatically led as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

“What a phenomenal campaign,” she reflects. “It brought everyone together in thinking about what’s next for Baldwin. It helped alumnae, parents and faculty buy into a shared vision that has strengthened our community. I was especially glad to see alumnae drive this campaign. Since I’ve joined the board, I’ve been more impressed by Baldwin graduates than anyone. When you meet one, you know it. They’re just incredible women.”

With Kaya now included in this sisterhood and Allie Weiser ’24 on her way, Pat is once again reminded that you can go anywhere from Baldwin.

“Kaya’s choice of college impressed me,” she says. “MIT was unexpected. She’s not a techy person, but Kaya found a school where she can dream big and solve important problems. She just loves it. I also can’t help but draw a line back to a time when my kids were in Lower School and Rob and I joined the parents raising funds for the first DREAM Lab. What better place for a future engineer to start learning?”

The experience likewise set the course for Weiser’s volunteer leadership and the family’s support of Baldwin. For the campaign, they chose to give generously to endowment.

“It’s important for everyone to support Baldwin’s endowment, which ensures this amazing education will always be there and that our School has the resources to keep changing and growing,” she explains. “We need to continue building on Baldwin’s strong foundation, because change is how you keep moving forward. It is why our traditions and community always feel exciting and invigorating to me. This campaign has taught us, just like Baldwin teaches the girls, to embrace this process as a step towards a brighter future.”

20 | BE THERE

I did not anticipate the monumental impact that choosing to BE THERE would have on me, my husband and my entire family. What we all gained from supporting Baldwin in this way is far greater than I expected. The reward of going all in, being there, supporting the School and helping to grow the endowment benefits everyone. It’s an opportunity to make an impact on the world, because I fundamentally believe that Baldwin’s very existence makes the world a better place.”

Think One Step Ahead

Baldwin is leading the nation in delivering an education that prepares young women to make indelible contributions to the world. This trailblazing quality dates to founder Florence Baldwin, who first designed a curriculum geared to higher education and careers at a time when society still constrained women’s aspirations.

Over the years, Baldwin’s educational program has evolved even as we held fast to teaching the skills and ways of thinking that are the hallmark of a Baldwin graduate—qualities like curiosity, adaptability and a lifelong love of learning.

From the outset, The Future Is Baldwin campaign focused on how our educational experience meets today’s most urgent challenge, namely: How can Baldwin better prepare our students for a highly unpredictable and rapidly changing world?

Baldwin’s response, grounded in research and our expert understanding of girls, created two new programs, the Wyss Interdisciplinary Institute (I2) for Middle and Upper Schoolers and the Wyss Interdisciplinary Incubator (i2) for our youngest learners. These programs provide students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to authentic real-world situations. As part of our signature I2 and i2 initiatives, students across every grade gain a deeper

understanding of content across multiple disciplines and explore overlapping concepts through hands-on projects.

For example, Lower Schoolers immersed themselves in interdisciplinary work focused on city planning and the environment, feminism and history, and science in Ancient Egypt. Middle Schoolers worked across grades on topics like mind-body wellness, how to invent a language and using performing arts to teach science. Upper Schoolers applied their skills to study the science of potions in Shakespeare’s plays, understand the social drivers of systemic poverty in Philadelphia, and appreciate the influence of culture on food and the food industry.

Through projects like these and many others, our students develop the ability to view issues through multiple lenses, discover a passion for inquiry and become the collaborative problem-solvers the world needs. They ensure Baldwin’s interdisciplinary programs have a lasting impact on how our girls engage with their studies and our community, while directly supporting the transformative, authentic classroom experiences that set our School apart.

This is just one more way that The Future Is Baldwin has helped to reaffirm Baldwin’s position as a national and global leader in all-girls education.

The Sky’s the Limit

An alumna discovers determination and voice turn aspirations into reality

Baldwin embodies opportunity. It fosters in its students perseverance, confidence and a sense of purpose—everything Pontea Fazeli Dixon ’98 needed to realize her potential.

“I could never have had a career on Wall Street had it not been for my Baldwin education,” Dixon emphasizes. “I didn’t let the fact that I was the only female trader around hold me back. At Baldwin, I was able to find my voice and build my confidence. I knew I could make an impact on any organization, in any field. Baldwin trains students to push the limits.”

The adversity Dixon found in launching her career in finance was not new. Tackling such personal and professional challenges is part of her family’s story. And it deepened her appreciation for Baldwin from the start.

“My parents put education above everything else,” she reflects. “They were both medical doctors who had to leave Iran during the revolution. They lost everything, but they were able to rebuild their lives because of education. They were adamant about giving that same opportunity to my sister and me.”

Baldwin became the key. “The School prepared me for intellectual rigor at Cornell and in my career,” says Dixon, a Managing Director on the Investment Grade Credit Sales desk at Wells Fargo Securities. “I truly value being part of a community of alums who challenge the norm and follow what they believe in.”

That is why Dixon was eager to join Baldwin’s Board of Trustees when given that opportunity. She knew it was her chance to pay forward to the next generation the gift of a Baldwin education.

“I said yes right away. I am honored to sit on a board with alumnae who are so accomplished. There is absolutely nothing these women cannot do. Together I knew we could do great things for Baldwin.”

When The Future Is Baldwin became the focus of the Board’s efforts, Dixon matched her own campaign giving to a priority she holds dear. “My husband and I agreed there is an opportunity for Baldwin to address even more powerfully the changing culture of the world,” she explains. “I’ve watched how our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program has flourished, how it educates and engages students and families, faculty and staff, alumnae from different generations. We need to enhance these conversations, even when they seem difficult, and show how Baldwin continues to grow. We are a place where all voices are welcomed and heard.”

For Dixon, the campaign’s special power lies in connecting so many Baldwin constituents to the priorities most meaningful to them. “Because of Dr. Porges’ leadership and our strategic vision, the entire community is investing in Baldwin. Our shared success should make every alumna proud.”

26 | BE FEARLESS

BE FEARLESS spoke to me as a theme of this campaign. Being

fearless is something I learned at Baldwin. Don’t let anyone hold you back. Don’t be afraid to take chances. It reminds me of when

I was just starting out in my career. I looked around for the senior women who might mentor me. There were very few. Thankfully, having gone to Baldwin, I quickly learned to speak my mind and to take risks. It’s a reason why I earned my own trading book after just six months on the job.”

Take Great Teaching to the Next Level

The campaign meets the moment at a time of change in education and the world

Applying expertise and innovation in equal measures, our faculty are the foundation of Baldwin’s excellence. Baldwin’s teachers have a commitment to their craft and the credentials to match that passion for educating girls. Threequarters of our faculty have Master’s degrees; one in five also have a doctorate. All are inspired by the mission of helping young women not just fulfill but exceed their potential. That is just one reason why so many alumnae stay connected with the Baldwin teachers who helped them become lifelong learners and critical thinkers.

Building from this foundation of strength, we have long invested strategically to nurture the richness of Baldwin teaching. The Future Is Baldwin added resources and resolve to these efforts.

Understanding the seismic shifts taking place in education and the workplace, in recent years we have placed new emphasis on project-based learning. This dynamic, interdisciplinary approach connects students to real-world problem-solving and teaches them the entrepreneurial skills that will serve them in any career they pursue. Nothing could be more important for young women now and in the future, and this focus sets Baldwin graduates apart from their peers.

The campaign made it possible for faculty in all divisions to discover new ways to incorporate interdisciplinary project-based learning into their teaching through a game-changing professional development partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Participating teachers, who earn project-based learning certificates, have been instrumental in designing and implementing the Wyss Interdisciplinary Institute. This spring event is the highlight of the yearlong interdisciplinary, student-centered learning that takes place across all grades and classes.

Our tradition of faculty and staff enrichment grants, which date to the 1960s, also benefited from the investment of campaign donors. These funds now provide increased professional development support for faculty members to author and pilot new curricula, present at regional and national conferences, and collaborate with colleagues around best practices.

The campaign has also added to the tuition support available for Baldwin faculty and staff who are pursuing advanced degrees and certifications, helping the School retain the best teachers and expand the tools they bring to their daily work with our students.

Where the Magic All Began

An alumna’s love of learning took root at Baldwin, her first academic home

Uncovering new connections and deeper meaning in art is both the challenge and the reward of being a scholar and curator for Anne Classen Knutson ’82.

“In my senior year, I had an art teacher—just for one semester—who plugged into my visual imagination and used art to bring history to life for me, igniting a new curiosity,” recalls Knutson, who came to Baldwin in kindergarten, following in the footsteps of halfsister Beverly Classen Cavitt ’64.

“That said, I had so many great teachers at Baldwin, who could make any subject matter interesting,” she continues. “I was not a science person but then I had Mrs. LaVan for Biology, a truly amazing teacher. I did well in that class because she made it come alive.”

The influence of Baldwin continued to shape Knutson after she graduated and matriculated to Duke. “My freshman year I had all TAs. None of them knew how to make the material exciting.” But even then, her Baldwin education helped keep her eyes on the prize. “I am convinced I never would have gotten my doctorate if I hadn’t gone to Baldwin. The lessons and inspiration I gained from my teachers stayed with me throughout my career.”

Now renowned for her scholarship and the shows she has curated, Knutson saw The Future Is Baldwin

as a long-awaited opportunity to pay forward the gift of her early education.

“I knew that the biggest difference I could make was to invest in teachers and professional development. It’s urgent and reflects a larger issue at stake in education: we need better leaders, who are more curious people,” explains Knutson, a prominent contributor with her husband to the campaign’s BE VISIONARY pillar. “Great teachers can develop great leaders and great contributors to society, especially when they instill the sense that there’s always something more to learn.”

The same is true of Knutson, who is herself working on a new museum show.

“I’m curating an exhibition on Winslow Homer and Eastman Johnson. I am looking at how, in the 15 years after the Civil War, they broke with tradition and focused on painting women who were not defined by the domestic realm. These confident, self-reliant women were intense, focused—reading a newspaper, solving a problem or out in the world enjoying themselves. They were no longer decorative objects.”

She pauses a moment to reflect and smiles. “What can I say? This is Baldwin all over again, isn’t it?”

32 | BE VISIONARY

I will always support helping a teacher light a spark in a child.

We need more curiosity in this world, and great teachers instill that motivation in their students. When I think about it, my commitment to teaching really began at Baldwin because that is where I discovered I could exceed expectations whenever I had a really good teacher. That’s an amazing feeling—and it’s why I choose to support faculty professional development and choose to make sure Baldwin always has the best teachers.”

THE CAMPAIGN DEFTLY BALANCED our future aspirations with presentday priorities. Donors to The Baldwin Fund empower the School to be truly mission-driven, providing the flexibility to use funding where the need is greatest and supporting all areas of daily life at the School. Increased investment in The Baldwin Fund thus provides the additional resources needed to fund day-to-day operations alongside the unexpected. This successful campaign also builds philanthropic momentum in our community that will create more opportunities for Baldwin in the years to come. As faculty and staff members, it was crucial that we showed our support for the School, our students, and each other by participating in the campaign. I donated because I believe in our mission, and that the work we do here every day makes a difference in the lives and futures of our students.”

And it proved that when we work together, we can have a meaningful, long-lasting impact on students as they prepare to be successful leaders in a dynamic world.”

“ With every milestone we reached, the excitement and momentum kept building. I cannot wait to see what these new investments and opportunities will mean for our students and our teaching!”

“ It was once an innovative idea to suggest that girls deserve the same opportunities as their male peers, and yet Baldwin has always been thinking beyond what is currently accepted and ahead to what could be. I hope that my support helps the School to improve upon the best ways to equip girls for the constantly changing future so they can develop the self-confidence required to try something new and become the next generation of innovators the world needs.”

ELIZABETH FORREST JOHNSON SOCIETY

Established in the spring of 1988, the Elizabeth Forrest Johnson Society recognizes those who continue the legacy of support begun by Miss Johnson—Head of School from 1915 to 1941. Its members have made a gift to Baldwin through their Will, made a prior contribution to Baldwin’s pooled income fund, or notified the School in writing that they have created a provision in their estate plan to benefit Baldwin. Planned gifts are the ultimate expression of confidence in Baldwin, and we are deeply grateful to those who sustain this cherished tradition of philanthropy. We would like to express special gratitude to those individuals listed in BOLD who made new planned gifts or commitments during The Future Is Baldwin campaign.

I am deeply grateful for the time, talent and tremendous generosity of so many members of our Baldwin community who came together and enabled The Future Is Baldwin campaign to reach such incredible milestones. In doing so, you reaffirmed our School’s strong position as a national leader in all-girls education and ensured that Baldwin will continue to play a significant role in preparing young women for any future they imagine, for many years to come.”
