Spring is in the air!

W

ith spring comes change, the need for spring-cleaning, or a new look perhaps. As the days get longer and the weather slowly warmer, Estonians come out of hibernation, so to speak. You will see smiles on our faces, and a spring in our step.

At the Baltic Guide, we have made a few changes ourselves. In the paper we have included more local content, meaning we are asking Tallinn locals what they like to do for entertainment, where they go to eat, where they go dancing, or their favourite museums.

We have also established more of an on-line presence. Our website is constantly being updated with all the latest news about restaurant openings, art exhibit reviews, new clubs, new shops…well you get

03 A SPRING EXHIBITION This year the Tallinn Art Hall (Tallinna Kunstihoone) celebrates its 80th anniversary. From 21 February to 4 May the Estonian Artists spring exhibition will take place, bringing the works of top Estonian artists together under one roof. The Art Hall is located close to Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak)

04 FLOWERS FOR EVERY WOMAN Women are the centre of attention in Estonia, or at least on Women’s Day. Men are expected to buy flowers for their girlfriends and female work colleagues too. in Low German, as this was one of the main things soldiers spent their time doing while on the lookout for intruders. Kiek in de Kök dates back to the 15th century. The tower is 38 metres tall, and the walls are four metres thick.

Viewing Platforms Kohtu Platform - offers one of the best views of the Old Town. The impressive tower of the Niguliste Church seems at arms length. The red tiled roofs with white edges are characteristic of Tallinn. Tallinn B1.

Patkul Platform - shows both a view of St Olaf’s Church, and part of the city wall. The church was even taller in medieval times and the tallest building in the world in its time. Nowhere else can you see the city wall from a better angle. Tallinn B1.

Kiriku Platform - the platform at the end of Kiriku Street faces west and offers a view of splendid and romantic sunsets. Tallinn B1.

Raeapteek The Town Hall Pharmacy (Raeapteek) is one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, which still operates in its original location, in the Town Hall Square.

Raekoja plats Tallinn’s Old Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval town hall square and was built at the beginning of the 1400s.

Toompea Castle The Tall Hermann Tower (15th century) on the southwest corner of the hill, and the blue, black, and white Estonian flag signify independence and freedom for Estonians. Today, Toompea is the centre of Estonian government and the Riigikogu (parliament). Look for the pink building behind the Russian Orthodox Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral. Tallinn B1.

Blink and you might miss this narrow passageway off of Vene. Built in 1246, St. Catherine's Monastery (Püha Katariina klooster) is the oldest building in Tallinn. This passageway is also known as the Latin Quarter of Tallinn, and where you can find one of Tallinn’s first Italian restaurants.

St Olaf’s Church (Oleviste kirik) Climb the stairs of the St Olaf Church and you will discover not only the lower town beneath but also the magnificent palaces facing the slopes of Toompea Hill, and the upper town. The old town of Tallinn is divided into a lower and upper part. The lower town was inhabited by hanseatic traders and the upper town, or Toompea was inhabited by nobility. The Kiek in de Kök tower is the entrance to historical underground bastion tunnels. In Soviet times they were supposed to serve as bomb shelters and protect the communist elite in case of a war. Kiek in de Kök means, “look into the kitchen”

Paks Margareeta Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) is the most important fortification tower in Tallinn. She was built in the early 1500s. The diameter of the tower is 25 metres and the walls are up to 6.5 metres thick! She was constructed to protect Tallinn from intruders from the sea. Fat Margaret is often the main entrance gate and first encounter for visitors to the Old Town in Tallinn, if arriving by sea.

A fascinating museum about Soviet history in Estonia is located on the top floor of the Viru Hotel. The hotel rooms were under KGB surveillance. The rooms were equipped with microphones, and small holes were made in the walls, where cameras could be placed to take pictures of hotel guests.

The museum is only accessible by guided tour. Tours run daily and are held in English, Finnish, Russian, and Estonian.

English tours book up quickly so bookings are recommended. Viru väljak 4, Tallinn B2.

Sometimes you just don’t have enough time to see everything, but on the Tallinn City Tour you just might. Three lines run daily, and best of all, each one passes through the Port of Tallinn, making it even more convenient. The tour operates in ten different languages and is guide by a recorded audio track that follows the sequence of the sights.

One ticket is valid for 24 hours. This means that you can travel on all three routes in one day. If you purchase a 24-hour Tallinn Card then your journey on the Tallinn City Tour is free.

A quick history of the city of Tallinn

Kalamaja & Kopli Kalamaja (Fish house) is a historic suburb filled with wooden houses and old factories. From the 14th century, Kalamaja has served as Tallinn’s main fishing port and was home to fishermen and fishmongers. When the railroad connected Tallinn with St. Petersburg in 1870, many factories opened. The colourful wooden houses you still see today were built in the 1920s and 1930s to house the growing working population. Kalamaja has seen a revival over the last few years as artists and other bohemian types moved in for the large spaces and cheap rent. Restaurants and cafés began to open, and the area continues to grow .

Patarei Prison (Patarei Vangla) Patarei Prison gives an eerie glimpse into gloomy Soviet era prison life. For a small entrance fee you can take a self-guided tour through the dark halls of this old sea fortress that has served as barracks, and then as a prison during Soviet times.

1346 The Danish sell Tallinn to the German Order. Toompea was divided among princes and bourgeoisie in the upper-town and craftsmen in the lower-town.

Pirita Pirita is an area located a short distance to the east of the city centre and offers a variety of things to see and do. Start by visiting the ruins of St Birgitta’s Convent ruins (Pirita klooster) whose colourful history dates back to the 15th century. A stroll through the ruins and the surrounds, including the small cemetery, is a moving reminder of the past. Its proximity to the Pirita River and the beach makes it perfect as part of a day excursion. The 2km long beach can attract up to 30,000 visitors a day in summer. Also located a short distance from the beach is the city’s Botanical Gardens (Botaanikaaed) and the famous Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn), which is a must see as it not only provides a number of interactive exhibits but also offers one of the best views of the city and the district. Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) Have you ever seen the hull of a real submarine from below? Or better still, crawled through the narrow living and working quarters of a fully refurbished sub from the 1930s?

The submarine Lembit was one of two Estonian submarines built in the UK in the mid 1930s. Another sight is an authentic replica of the Short Admiralty Type 184 seaplane, a British two-seat reconnaissance, bombing, and torpedo carrying folding-wing seaplane used in the Estonian war of Independence in the early 1920s and later for mail service.

Kadriorg Park is the area that houses the Presidential Palace (Presidendi kantselei) and the Kadriorg Palace (Kadrioru loss), and the KUMU Art Museum. (All located on Weizenbergi). Kadriorg means Catherine’s Valley in Estonian, and dates back to the 18th century.

The park and the palace were built

by Peter the Great, who apparently helped in its building. As was customary at the time, the main house was named after his wife. There are plenty of other things to see in this beautiful and prestigious park. From the Kadriorg Palace, head straight along the park trail to the Russalka monument, located at the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The famous Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) are only a short walk from the park as well.

Estonian Open Museum (Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum) Visitors can catch a glimpse of the Estonian countryside and village life from the past. The venue has a distinctive rural atmosphere that includes various farm buildings as well as its own church, tavern, and schoolhouse. Several mills, a fire station, fishing net sheds, a dancing area, and a village swing add to the character of the place. Some of the country’s iconic windmills can also be seen. Various demonstrations, displays and interactive activities help bring the past to life and provide visitors with a fun and educational experience.

Debit and credit cards are widely accepted throughout Estonia, especially VISA and Mastercard. American Express is not as widely accepted.

Currency can be exchanged in banks throughout the country. Major Estonian banks include: LHV, Swedbank, SEB, and Nordea. There is a wide network of ATMs in major cities and smaller towns. Currency can also be exchanged at Eurex, and Tavid.

Manna La Roosa seems to be the new ‘it’ spot of Tallinn, and it’s clear as to why. Greek chef Nikolaos Stavrakakis, who has worked at Noma, runs the kitchen. Dinner at Manna La Roosa is a lovely experience. The service is fantastic, and the staff treats you like a regular, even on your first visit. The menu offers a good mix of both fish/seafood dishes and meat. The menu plays with seasonal ingredients, throwing in a few Estonian twists (like Vana Tallinn, and Estonian liqueur, in their pork belly dish) and Saku smoked cheese (ox tartar).

It is about time that a really cool little café opened up in the Old Town, and Coffee Bar 10133 is just that! While the café is geared more as a takeaway coffee spot, there are a few seats, and some comfortable cushions in the window. But what makes this place really cool (apart from the great coffee of course) is the record player in the corner and the awesome record collection the owners have. Come summer, the takeaway option will be very appealing, as the park is just around the corner.

Müürivahe, in Tallinn’s Old Town is one of those seemingly hidden cobblestone streets that tourists seem to happen upon by accident. There are many cool little shops and cafés along Müürivahe and among them is the new Mexican restaurant Ancho.

Ancho is a welcome addition to Tallinn’s ethnic restaurant scene, one of the few offering Mexican food in town. While the décor may leave something to be desired, it’s no reason to pass up trying their filling tacos or burritos.

A good burger has good meat, fresh buns, and uses quality ingredients. It’s not to be overcooked. The fries on the side are just as important. Are they crispy?

And what about sauce? We asked local burger lovers where they go to satisfy their burger cravings.

Here is what they told us.

■ Vesivärava Grill About 80 of the Tallinn locals we asked mentioned Vesivärava Grill. Why – well the burgers are grilled and enormous. Located right next to a café of the same name, Vesivärava Grill has nine

Tacos come with a choice of crispy or soft shell. They are not filled with minced meat either; the beef taco was filled with savoury shredded beef and accompanied with cheddar cheese and guacamole. If you are looking for something spicy, try the stuffed jalapenos –the chillies are stuffed with melted cheese, battered and fried, and served with sour cream. Wash it all down with one of their Mexican beers, and be sure to save room for the lime flan. ■

■ R-18 Väike Resto Väike Resto is the latest addition to the Tallinn burger scene and offer a burger-only menu as well as pulled pork sandwich and chicken fillet burger. For a restaurant that is located in Town Hall Square, the prices remain reasonable. Be sure to check the board for daily specials, which often include a burger with fries and sauce of your choice, otherwise, you have order each separately. Väike Resto scores bonus points for their house made mayonnaise (tarragon, mustard, chilli, or aioli) as well as guacamole, blue cheese cream, or BBQ sauce.

Tallinn foodies have praised this Middle Eastern restaurant for their sashlik (grilled meat on skewers). At Suzani they offer lamb, chicken, pork, salmon, and beef. The lulja kebab (minced lamb) comes served in flat bread with onions and adzhika sauce on the side. Order a little lozi sauce (smoky hot sauce) for some added heat. Portions are on the small side, but order a few things to share to try a little bit of everything.

Tallinn has a new seafood restaurant, located inside the already popular Italian eatery Bocca. Bocca Pescheria serves sea bass, octopus, turbot and other seafood delights, Italian style. You can look forward to fresh flavours highlighting the top quality ingredients. Bocca is owned by the Sparkling Group, who also own Chedi, La Bottega, Tchaikovsky, Ö, and Café Spirit. The London Foodie praised Tchaikovsky, Chedi, and Bocca on his visit to Tallinn last year.

■ Estburger – Located right behind the Harju street skating rink, Estburger offers a lengthy burger menu. The burgers are everything you would expect from a burger kiosk, but as snack after an afternoon of skating, why not.

We recommend asking for the sauce on the side, and try the onion rings instead of the fries.

Turning up the heat The Street Wok has a small but spicy menu.

When I say small menu, I mean seven items. Dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice with chicken, prawns, and mixed vegetables) and Beef Kway Teow (flat rice noodles with sliced beef, bean sprouts, and chives) are served in generous portions. I tried the Char Kway Teow, a dish similar to the Beef Kway Teow, but served with chicken and prawns.

There was a substantial portion of both prawns and chicken in the dish, and the sauce was flavourful and spicy.

At The Street Wok, two chillies means spicy. I love spicy food, and the dishes are hot, even without the added chilli. The waiter suggested not adding any extra chilli, and he was right. If you do not like the heat, meals can be served mild as well. All dishes can be made vegetarian too, for 1 off the price.

The restaurant itself is quite small, and most clients come for takeaway. There are a few tables for sitting, and in the summer, an outdoor patio.

Dishes range from 6,90 8,90, and at lunch, non-alcoholic drinks are included. ■

Tallinn lacks a central shopping street like many other European capitals. If you haven’t explored Tallinn’s Old Town yet, there are many boutiques and high end shops that await the fashionista around every corner.

The area between Pärnu mnt and Harju is where you will find high-end brands like Burberry, Emporio Armani, Jacadi, Marina Rinaldi, and others. Centrally located Solaris can be found across the street from the Estonia Theatre. The entertainment does not stop there, the Nokia Concert Hall is attached to the back of Solaris. This is where some of the biggest acts come to play, when in Tallinn.

Inside the shopping centre you will also find a cinema (most films are screened in English or with English subtitles) and the large bookstore Apollo (with a good selection of books in English), both located on the second floor.

Most of the restaurants and cafés are located on the second floor, including Lido, Vapiano, Hesburger, and Sushi House.

The first floor is filled with shops, as well as a Sony store and a Ticket Pro kiosk. The shops sell clothing, shoes, electronics, jewellery, games and toys. A cosmetics shop and a chemist can also be found inside.

Gourmet food at Solaris.

The basement level supplies more home wares and health supplies. In addition to a traditional bakery and café, there is also the frozen yogurt stand YO!. The shop Armas Kodu sells home wares for a reasonable price. The Selver Gourmet is a high-end food shop, and the larger grocery store Solaris Toidupood has a good international wine selection.

Pay parking is available in the basement. The entrance is off Sakala. Parking costs 2.80 per hour or 14 per day.

When spring arrives, so do the adorable newborn animals at Tallinn Zoo. Tallinn Zoo has the best collection of mountain goats and sheep in the world, as well as a stunning number of eagles, vultures, owl, and crane species. Many of the births happen in April, including the goats and

camels, which are among the first to have babies. The crepuscular leopards can usually be seen romping around their enclosures in the early morning and late afternoon, and can be followed live on the web. In fact, many of the animals at the Tallinn Zoo can be watched via webcam.

2-10 March Tallinn Botanic Gardens Kloostrimetsa tee 52, Tallinn This annual orchid show brings flower fanatics to the Tallinn Botanic Gardens for a look at these beautiful plants. You don’t need to have a green thumb to enjoy this exhibit, orchids have amazed admirers for years. You can see both common and rare species at this year’s show. The Tallinn Botanic Gardens also has a fascinating permanent exhibition on lichen, moss, and tree fungi.

March 5 will mark 80 years since the birth of Kristjan Torop – an Estonian folklorist, folk dance collector, researcher and teacher, and the first Artistic Director of the folklore ensemble Leigarid. In celebration of this occasion, Leigarid are organising a full day of traditional dancing at the Estonian Open Air Museum. The day will finish with a Long Dance Night at Kolu Inn. Women’s Day on March 25 is a widely celebrated holiday in Estonia. Traditionally, by 25 March women had to have finished their handicrafts. Afterwards they would wear white, go to the pub and drink red drinks. Women’s Day also marked the beginning of spring.

Journey with the Titanic The Titanic exhibit at the Seaplane Harbour brings visitors face to face with this maritime tragedy.

Together there weree 1316 passengers on board, along with 885 crew members and 8 orchestra members. Onlyy 706 people survived.

There have been books ooks written about the sinking of the Titanic, along with films,, and the tale has been spoken about out more than any other similar event. The exhibit is made up of facts, which are in and of them interesting and need no embellishing. This tragedy still leaves people speechless, even after one hundred years.

The exhibit begins with a glimpse of the era, and the technological developments that inspired

the ship’s creation. During this time, the biggest and fastest machines were being built. The Titanic was talked about around the globe. The luxury liner symbolised limitless possibilities.

From there, you move inside the ship to the first class suites, and the less comfortable third

cl rooms. The biographies class of passengers are also diso cussed. The journey ended cu when the ship collided with wh an iceberg, and after three hours sank to the bottom of hou the Atlantic Ocean. It was not found again until 1985.

The exhibit also talks about the Th search and discovery of the wreck.

6th Tallinn Music Week 227 artists from 20 different countries will invade Tallinn from 27th to 29th March. Seventy-eight international acts have been confirmed, among them 19 from Finland, 11 from Latvia and Lithuania, seven from Russian, five from Denmark, four from Belarus, and three from Ice-

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Tallinn’s public transport system consists of trams, buses, and trolleys. All three use the same ticketing system. In 2013, a smartcard ticketing system was introduced. If you plan on using public transport more than three times, this is your best option. Smartcards can be purchased and topped up at R-Kiosks and are transferrable. The Tallinn Card also allows you to use public transport for free.

Driving in Estonia No international driver’s licence is required to drive in Estonia, but the following rules apply to all drivers: ■ Blood alcohol level must be zero.

Parking in Tallinn can be confusing.

There are public paid areas as well as private parking lots. The first 15 minutes of parking is free , if the driver is using a parking clock or written notice stating the start time – placed visibly on the windscreen of the vehicle. This does not apply to privately owned off-street car parks.
