At long last, patio season!

W

e can’t really complain that we’ve had a long and hard winter here in Estonia this year, at least not compared to that of North America. But in Estonia, warmer days and more hours of sunshine mean that summer is just around the corner. Patios and terraces began to open throughout the month of April and the Town Hall Square is already filled with people enjoying the sunshine in one of the oldest European squares. Another sign of summer is of course our special summer travel pullout, which you will find in the middle of this paper. The Baltic Guide’s summer travel special has everything you need to start planning your visit around Estonia. Each section looks at different parts of the country, tells you how to get there, and some of the top attractions of the area.

If you haven’t already heard, this year the Song and Dance Celebration takes place in Tallinn at the beginning of July (4-6 July). Tickets are going fast and this festival is perhaps the best way to experience Estonian culture. Former Estonian president Lennart Meri said: “The Song Festival is not a matter of fashion; the Song Festival is a matter of the heart”. See Estonians from all over the country come together to sing and dance and celebrate. At the last Song and Dance Celebration, 187,800 spectators attended and 35,320 performers took part. You can certainly imagine what a powerful show this year’s will be.

in Low German, as this was one of the main things soldiers spent their time doing while on the lookout for intruders. Kiek in de Kök dates back to the 15th century. The tower is 38 metres tall, and the walls are four metres thick. Komandandi tee 2, Tallinn B1.

Viewing Platforms Kohtu Platform - offers one of the best views of the Old Town. The impressive tower of the Niguliste Church seems at arms length. The red tiled roofs with white edges are characteristic of Tallinn. Tallinn B1. Patkul Platform - shows both a view of St Olaf’s Church, and part of the city wall. The church was even taller in medieval times and the tallest building in the world in its time. Nowhere else can you see the city wall from a better angle. Tallinn B1. Kiriku Platform - the platform at the end of Kiriku Street faces west and offers a view of splendid and romantic sunsets. Tallinn B1.

Raeapteek The Town Hall Pharmacy (Raeapteek) is one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, which still operates in its original location, in the Town Hall Square. Tallinn Old Town H 1.

Raekoja plats Tallinn’s Old Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval town hall square and was built at the beginning of the 1400s.

Toompea Castle The Tall Hermann Tower (15th century) on the southwest corner of the hill, and the blue, black, and white Estonian flag signify independence and freedom for Estonians. Today, Toompea is the centre of Estonian government and the Riigikogu (parliament). Look for the pink building behind the Russian Orthodox Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral. Tallinn B1.

Katariina käik

Blink and you might miss this narrow passageway off of Vene. Built in 1246, St. Catherine's Monastery (Püha Katariina klooster) is the oldest building in Tallinn. This passageway is also known as the Latin Quarter of Tallinn, and where you can find one of Tallinn’s first Italian restaurants. Tallinn Old Town H 2-3.

Kiek in de Kök and the Bastion Tunnels

St Olaf’s Church (Oleviste kirik) Climb the stairs of the St Olaf Church and you will discover not only the lower town beneath but also the magnificent palaces facing the slopes of Toompea Hill, and the upper town. The old town of Tallinn is divided into a lower and upper part. The lower town was inhabited by hanseatic traders and the upper town, or Toompea was inhabited by nobility. Lai 50, Tallinn Old Town E2.

The Kiek in de Kök tower is the entrance to historical underground bastion tunnels. In Soviet times they were supposed to serve as bomb shelters and protect the communist elite in case of a war. Kiek in de Kök means, “look into the kitchen”

Paks Margareeta Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) is the most important fortification tower in Tallinn. She was built in the early 1500s. The diameter of the tower is 25 metres and the walls are up to 6.5 metres thick! She was constructed to protect Tallinn from intruders from the sea. Fat Margaret is often the main entrance gate and first encounter for visitors to the Old Town in Tallinn, if arriving by sea. Pikk 70,Tallinn A2.

KGB Museum

Town Hall Square

Kiek in de kök

A fascinating museum about Soviet history in Estonia is located on the top floor of the Viru Hotel. The hotel rooms were under KGB surveillance. The rooms were equipped with microphones, and small holes were made in the walls, where cameras could be placed to take pictures of hotel guests. The museum is only accessible by guided tour. Tours run daily and are held in English, Finnish, Russian, and Estonian. English tours book up quickly so bookings are recommended. Viru väljak 4, Tallinn B2.

Sometimes you just don’t have enough time to see everything, but on the Tallinn City Tour you just might. Three lines run daily, and best of all, each one passes through the Port of Tallinn, making it even more convenient. The tour operates in ten different languages and is guide by a recorded audio track that follows the sequence of the sights. One ticket is valid for 24 hours. This means that you can travel on all three routes in one day. If you purchase a 24-hour Tallinn Card then your journey on the Tallinn City Tour is free.

■ Pick up the Tallinn Card (available from Tourist Information Kiosks and the A & D terminals at the port) for free entrance to many museums, free use to Tallinn city transportation, including the Hop on, Hop off bus (don’t forget the swipe the card), and further discounts all around town. www. tallinncard.ee

A quick history of the city of Tallinn

Outside of the Old Town TEXT KRISTINA LUPP, PHOTOS ANDREI CHERTKOV

Kalamaja & Kopli Kalamaja (Fish house) is a historic suburb filled with wooden houses and old factories. From the 14th century, Kalamaja has served as Tallinn’s main fishing port and was home to fishermen and fishmongers. When the railroad connected Tallinn with St. Petersburg in 1870, many factories opened. The colourful wooden houses you still see today were built in the 1920s and 1930s to house the growing working population. Kalamaja has seen a revival over the last few years as artists and other bohemian types moved in for the large spaces and cheap rent. Restaurants and cafés began to open, and the area continues to grow .

Patarei Prison (Patarei Vangla) Patarei Prison gives an eerie glimpse into gloomy Soviet era prison life. For a small entrance fee you can take a self-guided tour through the dark halls of this old sea fortress that has served as barracks, and then as a prison during Soviet times.

Küti 17 / Vesilennuki 6, Tallinn By tram: No. 1 or 2 from the city centre to the Linnahall stop. From there, by foot along the Cultural Kilometre trail.

The name Tallinn originates from the Danish occupation (1219–).

1561 Tallinn goes to the Swedish. 1721 The Russians conquer Estonia and Tallinn.

Pirita Pirita is an area located a short distance to the east of the city centre and offers a variety of things to see and do. Start by visiting the ruins of St Birgitta’s Convent ruins (Pirita klooster) whose colourful history dates back to the 15th century. A stroll through the ruins and the surrounds, including the small cemetery, is a moving reminder of the past. Its proximity to the Pirita River and the beach makes it perfect as part of a day excursion. The 2km long beach can attract up to 30,000 visitors a day in summer. Also located a short distance from the beach is the city’s Botanical Gardens (Botaanikaaed) and the famous Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn), which is a must see as it not only provides a number of interactive exhibits but also offers one of the best views of the city and the district. A starting point for information on these can be found at:

1918 Estonia declares independence and Tallinn becomes its capital. 1939–44 Russians and Germans occupy Tallinn. 1944 The Soviet Army bombs Tallinn in March and causes extensive damage. 1400 people are killed.

Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) Have you ever seen the hull of a real submarine from below? Or better still, crawled through the narrow living and working quarters of a fully refurbished sub from the 1930s? The submarine Lembit was one of two Estonian submarines built in the UK in the mid 1930s. Another sight is an authentic replica of the Short Admiralty Type 184 seaplane, a British two-seat reconnaissance, bombing, and torpedo carrying folding-wing seaplane used in the Estonian war of Independence in the early 1920s and later for mail service. The museum is located in the former seaplane hangars built during WWI

Kadriorg Park is the area that houses the Presidential Palace (Presidendi kantselei) and the Kadriorg Palace (Kadrioru loss), and the KUMU Art Museum. (All located on Weizenbergi). Kadriorg means Catherine’s Valley in Estonian, and dates back to the 18th century. The park and the palace were built by Peter the Great, who apparently helped in its building. As was customary at the time, the main house was named after his wife. There are plenty of other things to see in this beautiful and prestigious park. From the Kadriorg Palace, head straight along the park trail to the Russalka monument, located at the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The famous Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) are only a short walk from the park as well.

Estonian Open Museum (Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum) Visitors can catch a glimpse of the Estonian countryside and village life from the past. The venue has a distinctive rural atmosphere that includes various farm buildings as well as its own church, tavern, and schoolhouse. Several mills, a fire station, fishing net sheds, a dancing area, and a village swing add to the character of the place. Some of the country’s iconic windmills can also be seen. Various demonstrations, displays and interactive activities help bring the past to life and provide visitors with a fun and educational experience.

Vabaõhumuuseumi tee 12, Tallinn.

Debit and credit cards are widely accepted throughout Estonia, especially VISA and Mastercard. American Express is not as widely accepted.

Currency can be exchanged in banks throughout the country. Major Estonian banks include: LHV, Swedbank, SEB, and Nordea. There is a wide network of ATMs in major cities and smaller towns. Currency can also be exchanged at Eurex, and Tavid.

■ Tassikoogid

■ NOA

Or ‘cupcakes’ in English is a small cupcake café in Tartu’s Tasku Centre. While many other parts of the world have already been hit by the cupcake craze, here in Estonia it's only recently these decorative desserts have started gaining in popularity. The creativity at Tassikoogid knows no limits; flavours include sea buckthorn, black bread-yoghurt, baked apple, and more. All desserts are made in house. And those in Tallinn need not worry, you can taste Tassikoogi cupcakes at Diip in Kalamaja.

Brought to you by the same owners as OKO restaurant in Kaberneeme, NOA is the latest addition to the Estonian culinary scene. While located in the suburb of Viimsi, right on seashore, NOA will no doubt be one of this summer’s hottest restaurants. The interior is clean and simple with a bit of Scandinavian flare. The menu boasts appetisers, fish, and meat dishes in three price categories. NOA also has a large selection of wines by the glass.

Good meat There is nothing as satisfying as a great steak, cooked properly, with all the fixings. TEXT JUKKA ARPONEN, PHOTOS ANDREI CHERTKOV

Choose the perfect cut.

Good quality meat and proper cooking methods are the basis of a good steak. Goodwin Steakhouse has got this in spades. The menu, of course, is not just steak, but steak is what they do best. The meat is Australian Black Angus beef, which is beautifully marbled, leaving the perfect balance of juiciness and flavourful fat. Choose between different cuts, like NY strip, rib eye, T-bone, and

filet mignon, and then have them cooked to your liking. If you ask, you can choose your own cut of meat from a platter the waiter brings out. The steaks are prepared in Goodwin’s own Josper coal furnace, which adds its own unique flavour. The steaks are seasoned with nothing but a little bit of salt and pepper. On our visit, we decided to try the rack of lamb (9.50/100g) and the Iberico Secreto (22.50), a Spanish pork shoulder cut . The

lamb was well cooked, soft and flavourful, as was the pork. Both cuts were beautifully marbled, and the flavour from the grill was truly divine. I have tasted many different steaks in my life and I can say that this pork dish was one of the best I have ever had. From the fish menu, we decided to try the Dorado (23), which was just as tasty. It was served whole and grilled as well. So don’t worry, even non meat eaters will be satisfied at Goodwin.

Sides are chosen separately. Grilled vegetables and different kinds of potato dishes cost between 4-5. There are four different sauces to choose from as well, depending on individual taste and the meat you have chosen. The Spanish house wine was a great accompaniment to our meal. ■

Since 2008, Estonia’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings have been making choosing a great restaurant very easy. The panel of judges is made up of food media representatives from Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, and Russia. The 50 Best Restaurants were chosen at the end of April and will be announced in May, but we wanted to take a look back at some of our favourites in Tallinn from 2013.

#5 CHEDI Chedi is certainly not the cheapest of the lot, but worth every penny. Dishes appear small, but after sharing a few appetisers and a main, you’ll barely have room for dessert. Try the dim sum, or the fried squid to start. As a main you can’t go wrong with the roasted duck, and for something very spicy, try the spicy chicken with cashew nuts. Chedi also has a great selection of tea. Sulevimägi 1, Tallinn Old Town F2.

#9 SALT This cosy 26-seat restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and bookings are a must. The dinner menu changes weekly, and lunch specials are offered daily. Classic French bistro cooking, with the odd fusion dish tossed in inspires the menu. If you want to be close to the culinary action, you can sit right next to the open kitchen, and watch the chef hard at work. Vase 14, Tallinn B3.

#12 MEKK MEKK stands for Moodne Eesti Köögi Kunst, or modern Estonian cuisine in English, and this is exactly how MEKK’s food can be described. The flavours of traditional Estonian foods are combined with modern cooking techniques to produce wonderfully flavourful and colourful dishes. Suur-Karja 17/19, Tallinn Old Town I2 #14 GIANNI Many of the Italians living in Tallinn claim that this is the best Italian restaurant in town. Top quality ingredients, delicately cooked, and served tastefully are certainly reasons why.

#32 AED Aed is one of the top choices for vegetarian and vegan cuisine in Tallinn, and here is why: everything is clearly labelled on the menu with G – gluten free; L – lactose free; E – Without egg. The menu changes seasonally and there is a section of menu dedicated entirely to vegetarian food. Rataskaevu 8, Tallinn Old Town H1.

#3 PÕHJAKA MÕIS Three chefs moved to the country and fixed up an abandoned manor house. It doesn’t get more local than this; ingredients are sourced from their very own garden. Mäeküla, Paide vald, Järvamaa

#6 OKO This seaside restaurant, located not too far from Tallinn has made it onto the list every year since opening two years ago. Now they also offer overnight accommodations for visitors. Bookings recommended. Punase laterna / Sadama tee 1, Kaberneeme Port

The official party season has begun! Summer is almost here and it won’t be long now until cold raindrops are replaced by warm rays of sunshine. What could be better than sitting on a summer terrace on a pleasant late-spring evening and enjoying a good cocktail or pint. ■ CLUB TEATER Club Teater is a unique nightclub in Tallinn, built into an old theatre room. It’s a place where history meets todays glamour and the outcome is a mysterious and distinctive club. There are always different performers and the atmosphere will give you the feeling you really are in a theatre. Club Teater is a place for people who are looking

for a different club experience and want to escape from the present, even if only for one night.

Vabaduse väljak 5, Tallinn Old Town B2.

■ BAYERN BÖHMEN KELLER Last weekend I visited this cool pub with my friends and we all

were amazed – it was much bigger than I thought it would (it holds up to 160 people) and the interior was something out of the Middle Ages. The food was great and they had a large drink menu, including a fantastic selection of beer. We reserved a big table and the staff were very helpful. It has a great Old Town location, so afterwards we headed to the clubs around

the corner and had a wonderful night out!

Suur-Karja 18, Tallinn Old Town I2.

■ TAPPER Tapper is a cool rock-club in Tallinn, specialising mostly in rock and metal music. The club can hold up to 600 people, it is a

powerful black-box type of venue and connects a cosy bar feeling with a live music. It’s not in the Old Town but if you are a rock lover and enjoy a different kind of party, then it’s definitely worth the short trip.

“B

utterfly Lounge is definitely the place to be on a warm spring night. It’s the biggest cocktail bar in Estonia with over 40 different drinks, delicious (and well-priced) meals that all come along with great entertainment. The atmosphere of the bar is beautiful and fancy, and all the staff are highly qualified. All my foreign friends have loved this place so I’m sure you will too!” MAIRI, AGE 26

They have a separate shisha room and the bar is open until late. Recently they renovated the whole place and it looks awesome! It’s one of the few bars in Tallinn that is popular among all ages, so go check it out.” MARELI, AGE 27

“W

Narva-Jõesuu is a beautiful summer destination and continues to grow each year. Sandy beaches stretch for kilometres. Foodies must try the lampreys from Narvajõgi. The counties of Northern Estonia are filled with manor houses, some of which are only a short distance from Tallinn. Nature lovers must visit Lahemaa National Park, and in summer the small seaside town of Käsmu turns into a cultural centre. 04 RESORT HALL This seaside restaurant is one of Estonia’s most impressive.

Haapsalu is known in a way through Astrid Lindgren’s books, because the beloved illustrator Ilon Wikland was from Estonia and spent her childhood summers in Haapsalu. Wikland illustrated many of Lindgren’s books over the decades, as well as the Bullerby Children, Karlsson on the Roof, and the Brothers Lionheart. Wikland’s early illustrations and the progression of her career can be seen in an old wooden house at Ilon’s Wonderland. The top floor is the Karlsson on the Roof room and playroom. The exhibits in the children’s centre were updated this winter. Haapsalu is a truly child-friendly city filled with playgrounds, the most impressive of which is located in the moat of the Episcopal Castle. The castle itself is also striking, standing tall among the wooden houses. The summer brings Haapsalu back to life. Get to know the city by taking a ride on the tourist train, which weaves its way through the city’s narrow streets. You can also see the city from the sea with a ride on the steam ship. Haapsalu has many interesting museums, including the Museum of the Coastal Swedes, the Evald Okase Art Museum, the Episcopal Castle Museum, and the Railroad Museum. From the 17th of May, a new permanent exhibit will open in the Town Hall. ■

Pärnu is a great place for family vacations, especially because of the long sandy beach with shallow, warm waters. Recently, a new child-friendly attraction opened, the Lottemaa theme park, located about 10 km from Pärnu. The theme park offers games and activities, sure to keep children entertained for hours. The best way to familiarise yourself with Estonia’s summer capital is to hire a bike and take a ride through the beach side park. Bicycles can be hired from many places near the beach and from Tervise Paradiis Aquatics Centre. Some places even offer tendem bikes. Don’t forget to visit one of the city’s many interesting museums. Across from the concert hall is the Pärnu Museum where you can learn about the city’s fascinating history. This summer there will be a temporary exhibit on display about Estonia’s alcohol producers. Another popular summer tradition is a visit to the nude exhibit, Man and Woman. This year’s exhibit will be devoted to modern Ukrainian art. Motor sporting events are regularly organised at the Audru rally track. Of the four tracks, the longest is 3.2 km. Speed lovers can even try driving a Toyota GT86 or BMW 325. Go-karting is also offered. ■

Secrets of the islands Seaside horseback riding between the junipers in the fairy-tale forests is an everyday treat on the islands of Estonia. TEXT JUKKA ARPONEN, PHOTOS RATSUKIEVARI, TIHUSE, EAS, ANDREI CHERTKOV

Horseback riding is the main attraction at Tulla Makkonen’s Ratsukievari Recreation Centre. Makkonen built this centre in Saaremaa 12 years ago. In the beginning, the idea had been to turn this old Soviet era factory farm into a place to raise horses for sale. A tourism attraction was also a viable idea and visitors from nearby towns starting visiting Ratsukievari for horseback riding. Ratsukievari is located about one kilometre from one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Saaremaa, a popular place for hiking. Riding through the shallow water is just what some people are looking to do when they visit the island. You can also take your car to the beach, or simply enjoy walking. Ratsukievari has 15 Estonian horses and Island ponies. The horses have been trained since birth and riders of all levels of experience will find a good match. Even total beginners will be able to go riding. If you are too scared to try riding, then don’t worry, you can ride in a cart. “Visitors can go riding on

a track, on our new obstacle course, but riding through the forest is certainly the most popular adventure”, says Makkonen. Riding excursions are led by a guide. Visitors can bring their own lunch, or enjoy a meal at a local summer restaurant. Excursions can be organised to last an hour or all day. Tihuse Farm on Muhu Island has specialised in horseback riding trips and raising Estonian horses. Their large herd run freely in summer and winter. Some of the horses are trained for outings, but the raising and sale of horses is also very important. Tihuse offers accommodation for riders, including meals, and can take riders on very interesting tours about ancient culture, with or without horses. Martin Kivisoo, owner of Tihuse is well versed in local history, and will certainly never run out of stories to tell. ■

Pihtla makes a traditional strong beer. Tourists and windmills The symbols of Estonia’s islands are windmills and lighthouses. Many original structures can still be found on the islands. The most well known and historically important is the Kõpu lighthouse on the island of Hiiumaa. On the

VÕRU

Valgamaa, Põlvamaa, and Võrumaa are three counties in Southern Estonia, where Estonia borders Russia and Latvia. The population of these three counties is a little under 100,000. While the distances are short, there is still a great deal to see! The country’s largest trees, tallest ‘mountains’, and deepest lakes, are just some of the reasons to visit this area and its people. Here you will also hear different dialects of the Estonian language, including that of the Seto people. The Seto people celebrate their king on the first Saturday in August, along with some of the best folk music and beer. This year, Kingdom Day will be celebrated at Mikitamäe. In Võru, the folklore festival, taking place in mid-July for the

One of the most impressive is Taevaskoda on Ahajõe, where at its peak the sandy cliff reaches 20 metres. Even taller is the Härma wall beside the Piusa River in Meremäe County. The name for the region, Meremägi or Sea Mountain, was given due to its height and the fact that one could ‘see’ to the sea. ■

Happy feet and hands Summer is just around the corner, come to Cherie Ilusalong for all your manicure and pedicure needs. TEXT KRISTINA LUPP, PHOTOS ANDREI CHERTKOV

Cherie Ilusalong is located in a historical location in Tallinn’s Old Town. The building dates back to 1437, when a city official by the name of Gosshalk Borsteli built the house for his family. Cherie Ilusalong has been making the women and men of Tallinn beautiful since 2010. If you come to Cherie Ilusalong for a manicure or pedicure, chances are Argo will be taking care of your nails, and Gulja will take care of your feet. This beauty salon is a small operation, and most of the staff have a few different skills under their belts. Argo, for example, is also a hairstylist, makeup artist, and can apply eyelash extensions, in addition to manicures. Gulja does manicures, and pedicures. The talented staff of eight speak Estonian, English, Finnish, and Russian.

Gel nail polish has grown in popularity over the last few years, and Cherie offers both gel manicures and pedicures. For those that don’t know, gel nail polish is a type of polish that dries very quickly and stays on your nails for three to five weeks. Cherie uses Gelish Harmony gel polish. An LED lamp is used to dry the polish quickly. Gel polish is not only for decoration, but it also protects your nails and gives them strength. “Take care of your hands and feet by coming for a monthly mani-pedi, in addition to your daily beauty regimen”, says Sirje Soo, owner of Cherie Ilusalong. For the month of May, Cherie Ilusalong is offering a 20 discount on gel pedicures, when you have a gel manicure. A gel manicure costs 30 and a pedicure 38; if you book both at the same time, it’s only 60. Classic manicures start at 20, classic pedicures start at 28.

Cherie offers hairdressing, makeup, manicures and pedicures, eyelash extensions, and massage. The hair stylists at Cherie use L’Oreal products, including L’Oreal Professionnel hair colours. Among their hair colouring products is INOA, an oil based, odour-free and ammonia-free colouring product that moisturises and also covers greying hair. No matter what procedure you visit Cherie Ilusalong for, you will be warmly greeted with a cup of coffee or tea, and made to feel like a regular. Maydell’s intimate and delicate works are more than meets the eye.

Colours of the golden age: classical estonian painting from the collection of Enn Kunila

Enchanted by the north: estonian artists in nordic countries

MIKKELI MUSEUM, 20 March-7 September 2014 Enn Kunila, one of the most prominent art collectors in Estonia, is displaying around 50 works from his collection at the Mikkeli Museum. Around 50 lesser-known but equally impressive paintings from Estonian artists like Konrad Mägi, Nikolai Triik, Ants Laikmaa, Paul Raud, and Ado Vabbe take the spotlight at the museum. Many of these artists were pioneers in the early years of the Estonian art scene in the 1900s and 1910s. The exhibit offers an opportunity to become better acquainted with artists both familiar and lesser known of the Golden Age of Estonian art, ca. 1910-1945.

Eveline von Maydell: a world in black and white 8

9

KADRIORG ART MUSEUM, 28 March-7 September 2014 The exhibit Eveline von Maydell: A World in Black and White focuses on a dazzling array of scissorcut silhouettes depicting portraits of a bygone era. Eveline von Maydell truly was a world citizen, born in Iran but spending summers in Estonia, and living in the United States, Poland, Germany, and Portugal, among other places. The upper classes and high society dominate in the works of Maydell, whose intricate silhouettes gained special popularity in the United States, where she became close friends with the Roosevelt and Coolidge administrations.

ADAMSON-ERIC MUSEUM, 11 April-17 August 2014. The culture and nature of the Nordic countries deeply influenced Estonian artists in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The latest exhibition at the Adamson-Eric Art Museum showcases the range of creative impulses Estonian artists gained while studying, travelling, and painting in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The mystical northern light of Scandinavian summers was particularly evocative for Estonian artists. Stop by the Adamson-Eric Museum this summer by 17 August to see if the North will enchant you as well. ■

27 Ticket Information

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Tallinn’s public transport system consists of trams, buses, and trolleys. All three use the same ticketing system. In 2013, a smartcard ticketing system was introduced. If you plan on using public transport more than three times, this is your best option. Smartcards can be purchased and topped up at R-Kiosks and are transferrable. The Tallinn Card also allows you to use public transport for free. Both cards must be validated by touching them to the orange card reader. Detailed route plans are displayed at all the stops, or plan you journey ahead of time on-line at: http://soiduplaan.tallinn.ee
