The numbers are looking good ccording to Statistics Estonia, 431,421 foreign tourists stayed in overnight accommodation across Estonia. That is an increase of 9.6 per cent from last year. The growth in the first quarter sets a new record for inbound tourism to Estonia, something to be proud of indeed. What makes Estonia such popular destination? Certainly not the drizzly weather of late June! In the past year the number of direct flights to Tallinn has increased. The 2011 European Capital of Culture designation for Tallinn certainly put the city on the map, or rather reminded Europe where it was. The ease of travelling to Estonia makes Tallinn a prefect weekend getaway. But why not stay a little longer? Obviously I don’t need to tell you

that summer is a great time to visit this northern European country. The program of summer concerts and other cultural events is a great reason to visit too. This issue is packed full of things to do. We have a guide to Tallinn’s port district. Do you enjoy nature? Why not go on a canoe trip along one of the many rivers in Estonia. Visit Põltsamaa, where Estonian fruit wine is produced. Or stay in Tallinn and dine at one of the many fabulous restaurants in town. The capital of Estonia and birthplace of Skype will host the European Innovation Academy 2012. The Tallinn University of Technology, in co-operation with world famous Samsung and Microsoft are organising a large-scale event in Tallinn - The European Innovation Academy (EIA) from July 16 to August 3, 2012. It is the biggest training course in the field of innovation ever organised in Europe, bringing together experts from all around the world like Nobel Prize Winner Sir Harold Kroto, Professor Mark Harris, former head of INTEL, as well as top-level professors from Nordic countries. The EIA will provide a platform to learn and try out innovation management in an entrepreneurial way. EIA is suitable for engineering, science, and business students as well as professionals who are intending to pursue a career in innovative management.

Approximately 100 students from 25 different countries will participate. A winter innovation academy is planned for January. In my opinion the EIA conference is the best proof that small Estonia is at the forefront among innovative countries that offer outstanding opportunities to gain knowledge in the field of innovation, science, technology, and entrepreneurship. Therefore if you are a student, join the EIA and the wonderful spirit of Tallinn.

Under the full moon in August in Haapsalu, through the circular window of the Episcopal Chapel, the white lady makes her appearance. According to legend, the maiden appears to show the immortality of love. This legend is familiar to many Estonians. There were once strict rules forbidding women inside the walls of the Episcopal Castle. One man however, brought a young girl dressed as a boy into the castle. The secret was soon revealed and the girl was sentenced to be sealed alive in the walls of the Dome Church. The man

was put in prison and left to starve. The unfortunate girl waited for death between the walls. Â The White Lady performance has been shown in Haapsalu since 1979. The performance has been changed a little every year. Let's play White Lady, as the name of this year's performance suggests is playful and is set in both the past and present. â&#x2013;

04 Tango Charm in Tallinn

Tango Festival 2012 will bring Argentinian tango enthusiasts to Tallinn. The tango quintet, Quinteto Ange will perform July 14 in the White Hall of the Estonia Theatre. On July 13, Estonia's tango stars with shine at the Tallinn port. Aires de Finlandia will perform July 15 at the seaplane harbour with Petri Kaivanto and Alejandro Polemann. Â Â

05 Caribbean Beach Party

Â Kabli, a small town about an hour's drive south from PĂ¤rnu, is known to seafarers and for its Sunset Festival. 60 concerts and other events will take place on the sandy beaches of the small town throughout the summer. Enjoy the performances of Estonian stars Getter Jaani July 7, Lenna Kuurmaa and MĂ¤rt Avandi July 12, and Singer Vinger July 18.

Hit the beach! Go west from Tallinn to Laulasmaa and Klooga Beach (Kloogaranna). Why not rent a bike to get there? The distance is only 35 kilometres. You will discover summer in Estonia – though neither sunshine nor heat are guaranteed! Many nice beaches can be found along the road such as Vääna. Enjoy superb sea views from the plateau. Make a stop at VäänaJoa and admire the small waterfall. If you feel like swimming just choose the area

you like most. If you are biking you can come back by train from Klooga Beach, but check the timetable beforehand. It’s hard to believe that the whole area was covered with military airfields, missile ramps, garrisons, and radar installations only 20 years ago. The town of Paldiski, located another 15 kilometres away was once a closed navy base. ■

Matsalu National Park and Bird Sanctuary Birds love Estonia because of the wetlands. The Matsalu National Park, founded in 1957, is there to protect nesting, moulting, and migratory birds. There are 282 bird species, 49 fish species, and 47 mammal species, as well as 772 species of

vascular plants. The landscapes are unique with floodplains, reed beds, coastal meadows, wooded meadows, and islets. The Matsalu National Park is located 130 kilometres south west of Tallinn. www.keskkonnaamet.ee ■

Estonia: Quick Trips Not sure what to do while you’re in Estonia? Too much to see, too little time? The Baltic Guide is here to help. We’ve put together a few suggestions for you.

Day 1 in Tallinn

From Tallinn, about 180km southeast, is the university town of Tartu. Daily connections by train or bus from Tallinn are convenient and inexpensive. Shopping: For some unique souvenirs, visit Oma Asi (Saiakang 4, Tallinn Old Town Map Code H2). Here you’ll find distinctive handicrafts including knitwear and jewellery. Nu Nordik (Vabaduse väljak 8, Tallinn Old Town Map Code J1) has modern Estonian designs, including clothing, jewellery and home décor items. A. Galerii (Hobusepea 2, Tallinn Old Town Map Code G2) features mostly modern Estonian jewellery.

Take a walk through Tartu’s Old Town. Visit the Town Hall Square to see good examples of neoclassical and late-baroque architecture. The fountain in the middle of the square in front of the Town Hall features a young couple kissing under an umbrella in the rain. About a block from the square is the main building for Tartu University (Ülikooli tnv 18, Tartu). A little further on are the Botanical Gardens (Lai 40, Tartu) that have an impressive collection of over 6500 plant species, many of which are housed in a giant greenhouse.

Church: Visit the Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral (Lossi plats, Tallinn Map Code B1). Built between 1894-1900, this Orthodox cathedral was part of the Russification of the Baltic provinces in the last quarter of the 19th century.

Museum: The Estonian History Museum in the Great Guild Hall (Pikk 17, Tallinn Old Town Map Code G2) was recently renovated in 2011. This museum has wonderful exhibits to help you get acquainted with Estonia’s past. Free entry on the last Thursday of every month. Dinner: Get a taste of the Russian side of Estonia with a meal at Troika (Raekoja plats 15, Tallinn Old Town Map Code H1). Try a selection of Russian dumplings (pelmeenid), roasted eel, or bear meat stew. Then wash it all down with a shot of vodka. Photo: Andrei Chertkov

Day 2 in Tallinn:

Take a walk, or rather hop on the City Tour bus to see greater Tallinn. Get off at Kadriorg Park (Tallinn Map Code A4), and enjoy a stroll through the gardens. Or stay on the bus and visit the ruins of the Pirita Convent (Merivälja tee 18).

1 Day in Tartu:

Take a walk through Tallinn’s Old Town, and up the hill to Toompea. Toompea, located on the upper part of the Old Town has great views over the city and the Gulf of Finland. In the lower part of the centre, wander through narrow streets and get a true feeling for this medieval northern town.

Lunch: Enjoy a quick medieval lunch at the Town Hall (Reakoja plats 1, Tallinn Old Town Map Code H1). Elk soup and traditional ale are served in earthenware bowls and cups. Stuffed pastries (pirukad) are baked throughout the day, and are worth the wait, should they run out. Too nice to sit inside? As the weather warms up, patios pop up all over the Town Hall Square, a great place to people-watch.

Tartu

Day Trip from Tallinn: RAKVERE: is located close to Lahemaa National Park, a favourite place for hiking in the summer. About 100km east of Tallinn, Rakvere is the fifth largest city in Estonia. Rakvere Castle Ruins: This is the city’s main attraction. Located on the hill just outside of the city centre, the ruins of this medieval castle will entertain both adults and children. There are informative displays on the castle’s history, as well as weapons history. Try your hand at shooting a bow and arrow, or take a tour of the torture chamber. Town Hall Square: Built in 2004, this is probably Estonia’s most modern town hall square. Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity: (Pikk 19, Rakvere) A medieval church built in the 17th century with a strangely tall and slim spire. Rakvere Town Citizen’s Home Museum: (Pikk 50) Get a feel for life in Estonia at the end of the 19th century. This museum showcases how people lived in Rakvere at the time. Dining: Try the Art Café (Lai 13), for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It has a cosy, yet modern interior. Taste their selection of savoury pancakes.

Museum: Visit the Estonian National Museum (Kuperjanovi 9, Tartu). This museum displays temporary and permanent exhibits about Estonian history and culture. It is a wonderful place to become acquainted with Estonian customs and life in Estonia. Or, for something a little different, visit the Toy Museum (Lutsu 8, Tartu). Fun for both children and adults, this museum showcases everything from traditional Finno-Ugric toys, to nostalgic toys from the Soviet era. Lunch: Enjoy a quiet lunch at the Eduard Wilde Café (Vallikraavi 4, Tartu). This restaurant has a large patio open in the summertime. Their long menu has everything from curries to schnitzels, Caesar salad to crispy pork salad. Church: Founded in 1330, the Jaani Church (Jaani 5, Tartu) has been rebuilt many times. Despite being ruined by Soviet bombing in 1944, its restoration reflects the original structure. Enjoy 15 minutes of music every Tuesday and Friday at 12.15pm. Dinner: Built in a former gunpowder cellar, the Püssirohukelder (Lossi 28, Tartu) is a unique place to come for good hearty food. Popular among students, this pub often features live music. Evening entertainment: Enjoy everything from ballet, opera, musicals, and children’s plays at the Tartu Vanemuine Theatre (Vanemuise 6, Tartu). Museum: Visit the KUMU Art Museum (Weizenbergi 34 / Valge 1 Tallinn Map Code B4) in Kadriorg. Admire Estonian art from the beginning of the 18th century to present. The gallery also has a café with a nice view over the park. Lunch: Get a taste for modern inspired Estonian and Russian food at Kohvik Moon (Võrgu 3, Tallinn Map Code A2). Try the Siberian dumplings in mushroom stock, or the herring. Bookings recommended. Church: Experience another great view over the city from the tower of the Oleviste Church (Lai 50, Tallinn Old Town Map Code F2). Once the tallest structure in Northern Europe, this church was dedicated to the 11th century Norwegian King Olaf II. During the Soviet period, it worked as a surveillance centre for the KGB. Dinner: Restaurant Ö (Mere pst 6E, Tallinn Map Code B2) serves modern Estonian food, using fine local ingredients and experimenting with traditional flavours. Try the six-course degustation menu to get a taste of what modern Estonian cuisine is all about. Evening Entertainment: Take in a performance at the Estonian National Opera and the Estonia Concert Hall (Estonia pst 4, Tallinn Map Code B2). ■ Inspiration near the Baltic Sea

In the Old Town centre, near the Town Hall Square, is the newly opened shop that sells old vinyl records. The stock is mostly made up of old Soviet era records. Choose between classical music, and legendary rock records from the Beatles' repertoire. Prices are reasonable. You can also browse through "import records", which include the works of many western artists and were generally very hard to come by during the Soviet period.

This year's Man and woman - nude art show brings artists from the shores of the Baltic Sea to Pärnu. The exhibit features artists from Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Finland, each with their own interpretation of the theme: man, woman, and the sea. Admire large paintings, soft watercolours, photography, and much more. The show is now in its third year. The exhibition started in June and runs until September 3. Treats from the 1930s The 55th birthday of the Estonian Open Air Museum celebrated the opening of the village store as well. Old and new meet at the Bank of Estonia Museum.

Large spider found in bastions The European Cave Spider or Meta menardi was found living the medieval underground tunnels of Tallinn. English proficiency high among Estonian students

English proficiency was found to be the fourth highest of 14 countries where standardised tests were carried out. The European high commission published the study recently. 53,000 lower European Union secondary school students took part in the study.

Bicycle medics in Tallinn’s Old Town Since 2009, paramedics on bicycles have been helping tourists in the Old Town during the summer season. It is easier for the bicycle medics to manoeuvre the narrow Old Town streets and response time is three and a half minutes.

2.1 million euro for diaspora From 2009-2011, 2.1 million euros have been given for education, culture, and heritage studies for Estonians living abroad. Another 1.49 million will be given for 2012-2013. The money has been used to study émigré Estonian cultural heritage and publish works both academic and popular. Other cultural festivals including the ESTO festivals also received funding.

Estonia climbs one place in EU’s GDP rankings Last year, Estonia’s GDP was 67% of the EU average. It places the country 21st, one place higher than the previous year. Luxembourg was at the top of the list. Lithuania placed 24th and Latvia 25th. Romania and Bulgaria were at the bottom of the list.

The village shop has been brought from Laulu Village in Rapla County. It truly gives you a feel for 1938. At that time, Mrs. Tikerberg and her daughter ran the shop. The shop is always open during museum hours and sells everything from lamps to sweets, basically everything that was for sale 75 years ago. Loose candy is packaged in paper, and beer is sold in old-fashioned bottles. The store's back room houses a seamstress, as was customary in the old days. Have period clothing sewn and fitted for you upon order.

The Estonian Open Air Museum is located at the beach, one kilometre from the Rocca al Mare shopping centre. The houses at the museum have been collected from all over Estonia and give insight into rural history and architecture. The museum also has a working inn that serves traditional Estonian farm food. ■

The Bank of Estonia Museum opened a new exhibition hall at the beginning of the year and celebrated its 15-year anniversary. The building, which used to house the Estonian Nobility's Credit Union, is more than one hundred years old. The exhibits are housed in three different halls and cover the following topics: the history of the Estonian currency, money production, and the organisation of the Bank of Estonia. Start with a display of the history of Estonian currency, then move through time to see the progression of the Estonian banking system. See old money once used by ancient merchants and learn about modern banking technology as well. Finally, see Estonia's participation in world trade over the last 100 years. To add to the interesting collection, there is also an exhibit that shows how money is made and explains how to identify counterfeit bills. The museum also gives an overview of the

financial system and discusses Estonia and the Euro. Learn about Estonian history and culture and about the people on the old Estonian crown notes, poet Lydia Koidula and linguist Jakob Hurt to name a few. ■

Brazilian food is not yet very well known in Estonia, but after eating at Casa do Brazil, that's about to change.

The Kreutzwald hotel restaurant recently changed into the Latin American restaurant Casa do Brazil. The décor is reminiscent of the hotel, but pleasant nonetheless. Ceiling fans create a sense of being in the tropics. The restaurant is also where the hotel breakfast is served in the mornings. At lunchtime (12.00-15.00), the restaurant is filled with hotel guests, tourists, and locals alike. The soup (2.50) comes served with salad and bread. Larger portions can be had for 3.50. The best feature is of course the abundance of food on the menu. A good selection of seafood is available as either an entrée or main. Meat dishes are cooked on the lava stone grill. Picanje is a big beefsteak cooked on the lava stone grill. You can choose potatoes, rice, or vegetables on the

side. Our server recommended Picanje to us, and it was truly tasty. The local Estonian beef was especially delicious and tender, and the wok vegetables along with the mango salsa added an exotic flare and freshness to the dish. It's worth a try! Our server also recommended the mussels and Brazilian seafood casserole. The wine list featured a few bottles of Brazilian wine. The house red paired will with the sea-

food dishes and the beef. The prices fall somewhere between Old Town restaurant and Kopli pub prices. The desserts were around 5 and the main courses between 8-18.50. A bottle of house wine costs 17. Children have their own menu, with prices that range between 2.50 to 4.50. There is also a play area for children, should they become restless and no longer want to sit at the table. Mojitos and other cocktails, as well as the

It did not take long for word to get around about Cru. Upstairs, the 15-room boutique hotel offers peaceful accommodation. Downstairs, the restaurant menu balances classic and modern, local and international for a truly unique dining experience. Let’s start upstairs. Upon entering a deluxe suite that faced the Old Town main street Viru, I almost forgot where I was. It was so quiet. For anyone that has stayed in the Old Town before,

they know that the old stone buildings echo the sounds of the busy tourist-filled streets below. In other words, it’s noisy. Each of the rooms is unique and range from standard to deluxe to suite sizes. In the basement, guests can enjoy use of a small swimming pool and sauna. One of the stunning features of the restaurant on the main floor is the courtyard patio located at the side of the building. Again, it is so peaceful that you almost forget where you are.

Chef Dimitri Haljukov is currently serving his summer menu. This new menu focuses on light summer fare –salads, local fish, vegetables and so on. After arriving in Tallinn by cruise ship, you need not go far for a meal, or shopping. The Viking Line store, Sadama Market, and many different kinds of restaurants are diversifying the area. Everything is available to you, as soon as you step off the cruise ship. One of the biggest shops in the area is the Viking Line Quality

Outlet. The food section on the lower floor of the Lootsi Centre sells everything from beef tenderloin to whitefish caviar (frozen). The beverage selection is even bigger. Prices are comparable to those on the cruise ships. Top brand clothing and shoes can be found as well. Find designer labels, like Calvin Klein, Burberry, Gant, and Armani. Many of the styles are samples, or one-offs. To give you an idea of the prices, Armani and Polo shirts are under 50 and

Although the shopping centre has already been open for a few years, it is not until recently that it started to take off. Many shops have stood empty, and renovations have been on-going. Rotermanni Centre, the new destination for gastronomes? Wine and dine at the Rotermanni Centre. "Drink-in" or takeaway a bottle of great wine at Kork.

Great restaurants and cafés surround the Rotermanni Centre, located in Tallinn's city centre. Inside however, the centre has seen many different kinds of shops. The recently opened Kork Wine Bar and Store, and Juustukuningad are turning this centre into a destination for foodies.

Kork Wine Bar and Store is located just across from Juustukuningad. The shop has a great selection of wines, ciders, and spirits. In the back of the store, facing the street is the wine bar. Here you can sit either inside or outside and sip on a glass of wine while enjoying a light snack. Their menu consists of bruschettas, salads, cheese, and meat platters ideal for sharing.

Juustukuningad (or Cheese Kings in English) is Estonia’s first Dutch cheese shop. They have many different kinds of Gouda, including aged and infused cheeses. Colourful wheels line the shelves of the store, and all cheeses are available for tasting. The shop also sells a selection of knives and cutting boards. Jams and preserves are sold to accompany the cheese.

Believe it or not, Estonia had a wine culture during the first period of independence. The story starts in 1910 when Swiss-born Arnold Lüscher and Estonian Paul Matiesen decided to open a vodka factory in Moscow. Due to the October Revolution, the pair were forced to leave. In 1921, they decided to open a cellar in

Matiesen’s hometown of Tallinn and began importing spirits into Estonia. They imported such products as Barton & Guestier wines, Gordon’s Gin, Johnnie Walker whisky, and Edmond Dupuy cognac. Their business flourished and by 1929 their Toompea cellars held over 200,000 litres of wine. In addition to the cellars, they also opened a wine bar and shop on Kuninga that was very

popular in its day. After the start of the war, the pair was forced to close their doors. Fast forward to 2009: Luscher & Matiesen reopened and have begun importing wine from France and Spain, with plans to expand their product line. In the summer they open a terrace almost overlooking Tallinn in the upper part of the Old Town on Toompea. They serve both a

French white and a Spanish Red under their label, as well as small snack menu. Follow their updates on Facebook to find out about upcoming live music events. Cash only. ■

Paddling in Estonia There are many companies organising canoe trips in Estonia. Less experienced paddlers are encouraged to organise a guided tour. The sounds of silence There are thousands of rivers in Estonia, perfect for canoeing.

■ Matsalu National Park The 3000 hectare reed-covered area of the park makes a unique setting for a canoe trip. Through the large reed beds flows the 112 kilometre-long Kasari River. Canoeing is easy on this river because it is straight and there are hardly any rapids. Strong winds however, will sometimes make you work hard. The river flows under the shade of the forest and the sounds of thousands of crickets and grasshoppers are the best soundtrack as you paddle along. Many different species of birds can be spotted. You can really hear the peaceful silence of the wilderness, lost among the reeds. You are not allowed to bring your own canoe into the park, but you can rent one from the local nature tour company. Get more out of your trip by taking along a guide who will tell you about Matsalu's nature and history. The trip will generally take you three to four hours. There are no maintained campsites or beaches. ■ Soomaa National Park Located between Pärnu and Viljandi, Soomaa National Park is perhaps one of Estonia's most famous canoe destinations. The following rivers flow through the park: Halliste, Raudna ja Lemmjõe.

In addition to the marshes, this park has dunes, meadows, and glorious forests. Beautiful old oak trees grow on the dunes, each one lovelier than the last. In Soomaa there are a number of RMKs (Estonian Forest Management Centre) who maintain the campsites. Soomaa is a great place to spend a few days. The rivers generally flow calmly. You may come across the odd fallen tree along the way.

■ Southern Estonia The landscape in southern Estonia is different from the rest of the country. There are steep hills, farmland, and spruce trees. In

addition to the rivers, there are numerous lakes in the area. Beaver dams and rapids create many challenges for paddlers. Estonia's longest river, Võhandu (162 km), is another one of the most popular canoeing destinations. The Võhandu marathon is held in the spring, which runs 100 km from Võru to Lake Peipsus. Waterfalls, dams, and flood zones make this river a good challenge for advanced paddlers. First time paddlers are encouraged to take along a guide. Another favourite river in southern Estonia is Ahja, which flows into the Emajõgi. Ahja is beautiful and surrounded by uni-

It is considered one of the most scenic rivers in Estonia. ■ Lahemaa National Park Some of the most picturesque rivers are located along the north coast of Estonia, where you can often find a waterfall as well. The closest canoe destination to Tallinn can be found in Lahemaa National Park. Lahemaa's nature is diverse with its spruce trees, meadows, and marshes. The Valge River, which flows into the Gulf of Finland, is the largest tributary and also the most favoured by paddlers. The river is well suited for more advanced paddlers because of its rapids. Canoe portaging is required in some places. Campsites can be found at Nõmmeveski. Organised canoe trips can be arranged for the Loobu River. ■

You also have a seaplane – the Short Type 184 It is a full-scale replica of the Short Type 184, a British pre-WWII seaplane, which was used by the Estonian armed forces. The short Type 184 has earned its place in military history by being the first aircraft ever to attack an enemy ship with an air-launched torpedo. None of the original seaplanes have survived, thus our replica is the only full-size Short Type 184 in the world.

The Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the British Second Sealord Vice Admiral Charles Montgomery and director Mr Urmas Dresen inaugurated the museum in May after the completion of the two-year renovation, and many years of ownership disputes. What does the museum display? What we have on display comprises more than a couple of hundred large exhibits. It revitalises the colourful history of Estonia with influences by tsarist Russia, WW II, and 50 years of Soviet occupation. With the help of modern

multimedia, the Seaplane Harbour tells exciting stories about Estonian maritime and military history promising a sea of excitement to the whole family.

Lembit is still in excellent condition offering a glimpse of 1930s technology. The submarine’s interior is fully restored providing museum visitors with an extraordinary opportunity to go on board

Sometimes museums in Estonia are considered boring – look but don’t touch - what about the Seaplane museum? The museum’s guests can take a trip in the simulators to enjoy a flight above Tallinn or go on a journey around the world in the Yellow Submarine, or navigate the Gulf of Tallinn.

What is the history of the hangars? The hangars were built in 1916 and 1917 as a part of Peter the Great’s sea fortress. They are the world’s first reinforced concrete shell structures of this size. Charles Lindbergh, who performed the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean landed here in the 1930s. The hangars also served as a summer resort to the Estonian air force unit and as a closed military base to the Soviet Army. How did you finance the project? The construction has been supported by the European Regional Development Fund for development of cultural and tourism objects of national importance. The Tallinn University of Technology helped us with the technical solutions. ■

One of the attractions is the submarine Lembit. Tell us more. Lembit is the centrepiece of the new museum. It was built in the UK in 1936 for the Estonian navy. Lembit served in WWII under the Soviet flag after the Soviet occupation. It remained in service for 75 years, being the oldest submarine in the world still in use until it was hauled ashore last year. What are the specifics of Lembit?

SOME FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE NEW MUSEUM: ■ The Seaplane Harbour’s exhibition area is approximately 6,500 m2 – the total area of more than 33 tennis courts. ■ The main exhibits are displayed in the hangars under domes with a thickness of 8 to 15cm. ■ The oldest exhibit is the Maasilinn shipwreck, which originates from the mid-sixteenth century. In comparison, the Vasa ship in Stockholm, Sweden is nearly a century younger.

■ Visitors can board a submarine and imagine themselves back in the year 1936. ■ The heaviest exhibit is the submarine Lembit weighing approximately 600 tones or the equivalent of 375 medium-sized motorcars. Although tanned skin is beautiful to look at, sunbathing (both outside and in tanning beds) must be done in moderation and with proper protection! Sun tanning creams and sprays give you the colour without the risk. The treatment begins with body exfoliation. Sothys Delicious Scrub contains nutmeg, ginger, sea salt and corn oil that mois-

turise and leave your skin silky smooth. The body scrub is then rinsed off in the shower and Sothys self-tanning cream is applied. Unlike other self-tanning creams, this one has no unpleasant odour but rather a nice scent of vanilla. The cream contains a colourless derivative of sugar cane (erythrulose), which reacts with proteins and amino acids on a superficial layer of the skin. This gives you a more tanned complexion without any spots.

Both the body scrub, and self-tanning cream are applied through massage. After the treatment you are left relaxed, with lovely smooth and lightly tanned skin.

If you want a long-term effect or a darker result, why not buy some self-tanning cream to take home. The procedure can be repeated after 2-3 days. ■

The staff at Nail Lounge sure know nails, but more importantly they give an excellent manicure and pedicure. Summer is a time to relax and not worry about your nail polish chipping off in the sand and in the water. The OPI Gel Colour manicure or pedicure is the perfect solution to this problem. The colour stays on your nails for up to three weeks, and usually clients come back to the salon with the colour having grown out, rather than chipped. I decided to put this to the test and try a Gel Colour mani-

cure. What is different about this manicure is that your hands must remain dry. Your nails are first filed and cleaned. The base coat is then applied, followed by the colour of your choice, and then a top coat. Between each application of polish, your nails are placed under a UV light to dry. Once the manicure is finished your nails are dry and your hands are given a quick massage. The entire procedure takes about an hour and costs 24.50. After two weeks, my nails had grown out and were only slightly chipped on the thumbnails. I had been on vacation during this time,

so it would be safe to assume that the chipping came from packing and having to carry around a heavy suitcase. The polish did not lose its shine and was still as sheeny as it was on the first day. This varies with different nail types and conditions. For example, the polish does not stand up well to extremely humid conditions. It is recommended that you return to the salon to have your nails touched up, or the colour removed altogether. While it is possible to remove the colour yourself, going back to the salon will ensure that your nails are left in good condition. To remove the polish, a pad soaked

with nail polish remover is placed on top of the nail and then wrapped in aluminium foil. After 10 minutes, the colour comes off almost as one piece. Some residual colour is left on your nails, which is then polished off by the technician. A touch-up with the same colour costs 24.50, 28 for a new colour, or 24.50 to have the polish removed completely. This includes a manicure. ■

Of the seven golf clubs in Estonia, together they have a few thousand members, most of which are foreigners. Estonian golf courses are well kept. Membership has grown extensively, particularly at the Suuresta Golf Club, which attracts members with the low-cost Green Card training courses. The first 15 minutes of parking are free when using a parking clock. The 15 minute free parking does not apply in parking lots. Parking tickets can be purchased from a kiosk or in select stores. ■ Town Hall Square (Raekoda). Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval town hall square was built at the beginning of the 1400s.

10,000 BC The Ice Age ends and people arrive in the territory of Estonia. 11th Century The main source of subsistence is agriculture and the provincial government is formed. 1200s The Livonian Brotherhood of the Sword is formed in Southern Estonia and the Danish occupy Northern Estonia. 1343 St. George’s Night uprising. Estonian peasants rise up against the occupiers with modest success. 1346 Denmark sells land in Estonia to the Teutonic Order. 1558 Ivan the Terrible of Russia goes to war against Livonia, when Estonia comprised part of Latvia. The war began in 1553 and included Denmark, Sweden and Poland. Estonia and Latvia were divided among Poland (Latvia and Southern Estonia), Sweden (Northern Estonia), and Denmark (Saaremaa). 1600s Schools are set up and the University of Tartu (1632) is under Swedish rule. 1700–1710 The Great Northern War inflicts fruitless years of famine and plague. The population decreases from 350,000 to 100,000. 1710 Tallinn and Uusikaupunki belong to Russia after the Treaty of Nystad. 1800s The power of the Tsar diminishes, serfdom is abolished and peasants are given the right to purchase land (1860). In 1914, half of the land belongs to the German nobility. Political power remains in the hands of the nobility. 1917 With the fall of the Russian Empire, Estonia receives autonomy. Estonia organises elections and Konstantin Päts becomes head of government. 1918 Germany occupies Estonia. The Estonian Provincial Assembly declares Estonia’s independence on February 24. Estonian forces fight against German and Russian forces. 1919 Estonian War of Independence continues and ends on 02.02.1920 in Tartu.

1920 The first formal law of Independent Estonia is made to expand democracy. Many small political parties are formed. 1929–35 The economic and political crisis of 1929-35 results in a state of emergency and a disbandment of the parliament. Päts rules by decree. 1937 A new constitution is written, 1938 Päts becomes president, there is a return to constitutional governance, but full democracy is not reached prior to the Soviet occupation. 1939 The German-Soviet NonAggression Pact is signed. On September 28, Estonia is forced to allow the Soviet Army to set up military bases in Estonia. 1940 “Elections” are held, after which Estonia becomes a Soviet Republic (27.7.) and merges with the Soviet Union. 1940–41 The Germans occupy Estonia. Nearly 70 000 Estonians join the German army. In September 1944, the Red Army sweeps in on Estonia again. 1944–91 Estonia is Soviet Estonia. Near the end of 1944, a large part of the population flees abroad. About 10,000 men (The Forest Brothers) will continue to fight. 1948–25,000 Estonians are deported to camps in the east. In 1940 the Estonian population was estimated at 1.1 million, but by 1949 it had decreased to 850,000. 1955 Over 200,000 non-Estonians move to Estonia. In 1980, more than 60% of the population is Estonian. 1987 An attempt is made by Estonians to break from the Soviet Union. There are demonstrations, including the environmental campaign against opening large phosphorus mines in Virumaa. 1988 The Singing Revolution, Estonia declares its sovereignty on 16.11.1988. 1991 Estonia regains independence on August 20 after the failure of the coup d’état in Moscow. 2004 Estonia joins the European Union and NATO. 2011 The Euro replaces the Crown, used since 1992 as currency.

City of Tallinn The name Tallinn originates from the Danish occupation (1219–). 1285 Tallinn joins the Hanseatic League. 1346 The Danish sell Tallinn to the German Order. Toompea was divided amongst princes and bourgeoisie in the uppertown and craftsmen in the lower-town. 1561 Tallinn goes to the Swedish. 1721 The Russians conquer Estonia and Tallinn. 1918 Estonia declares independence and Tallinn becomes its capital. 1939–44 Russians and Germans occupy Tallinn. 1944 The Soviet Army bombs Tallinn in March and causes extensive damage. 1400 people are killed.

1944–1991 Tallinn becomes a Soviet capital and hosts the sailing competitions of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. 1991 Tallinn becomes the Estonian capital. In 1997, it is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 2011 Tallinn is the European Capital of Culture along with Turu. Its population is estimated at 411,000: 53% Estonians, 38% Russians, 9% Other.
