ummer is festival time in Estonia and just because the long days are getting shorter and the weather a little cooler, there is still time to pack a few more in. The annual Birgitta Festival in Pirita showcases contemporary musical theatre in the setting of medieval convent ruins. There is the great Tartu Love Film Festival TARTUFF in Estonia’s second largest city, where visitors can snuggle up to romantic films in the Tartu’s Town Hall Square. Let’s not forget about the food festivals that come along with the harvest, like the Pickle festival in Tahkuranna or the Lüübnitsa Onion and Fish Fair. And then there are the events that signify the end of summer like the White Lady Festival in Haapsalu and the Night of Ancient Fires

where bonfires are lit along the shores of Estonia on the last Saturday in August.

In this issue we’ve got some new restaurants for you to try, including quite a few good places for fish. Take a look at some great skin care products made right here in Estonia. And because it’s still summer, why not take the opportunity to travel outside of Tallinn to visit unique towns like Mustvee and Põltsamaa. Travelling with children? Take them to one of Tallinn’s adventure parks that are sure to keep them entertained for hours. If the weather allows, you don’t need to go far for a day at the beach either.

One of the most recent additions to Tallinn’s Old Town restaurant scene, Art Priori brings art to the table where food is elegantly and artistically-presented for a beautiful dining experience. The menu focuses on local ingredients, playfully-combined for a feast of the senses. Bookings recommended.

This new family restaurant has probably one of the most beautiful locations in Tallinn in Hirvepark, a garden oasis in the city. Fish must be the popular style of restaurant this year because Kalambuur specialises in just this, but we’re not complaining.

While we haven’t had a chance to go and try it ourselves, we’ve been told it’s a must-try.

If you make it down to Pärnu, Estonia’s Summer Capital, then don’t forget to make a stop at Kalamajakas.

Specialising in fish dishes, this tiny café offers guests a short menu of local delights. On our visit we tried the smoked fish salad and the fish and chips, both did not disappoint. If you still have room for dessert, the deconstructed berry cheesecake makes for a sweet ending. As with many places in Estonia, Kalamajakas fills up quickly in summer, so waiting times may be increased. Order a glass of wine and enjoy people-watching.

A Visitor’s Tale The Traveller’s Pub and Club takes you off the beaten path.

Many of us visit Tallinn and don’t go exploring outside of the Old Town, but this pub (with a great terrace to boot) is not so far at all.

Tucked into a house along Tartu mnt, between Stockmann and Ülemiste, the Traveller’s Pub is your oasis in the city.

In summer, visitors can enjoy two terraces – one in the front and the other in the back, where the grill is. Even with our chilly summer, or as the locals say a summer off to a slow start, upon our visit the terrace was half full!

While it’s known as the Traveller’s Pub, the place actually has a much longer name – Seiklusjutte Maalt ja Merelt or Adventure Stories from the Land and Sea. Aside from the series of adventure books of the same name, the name encompasses the concept of the pub, “travelling, adventures, and everything that comes along with it”.

The menu boasts many pub

favourites with everything from all-day breakfast dishes to a hearty selection from the grill in summer.

But what kind of Estonian pub would it be if they didn’t serve a few herring dishes too? At lunch, the pub is filled with locals enjoying the daily lunch special – a hearty, and large, or a filling main dish.

When we visited, they were serving slow-cooked pork with potatoes and salad. ■

If you want to mix with the high-rollers, and join the party everyone’s talking about after you’ve finished your meal, IO Restoran & Lounge is the place to go. Nestling next to Tallinn’s wealthy Kadriorg suburb, IO recently opened to great fanfare.

If you go inside, you’ll see why.

The decadence is something you really must experience.

While enjoying a choice from the extensive menu, which contains sushi, plus Italian and Russian favourites, you can sip from your favourite wine (they have one of the most extensive choices in Tallinn), and watch the beautiful people of the city come and go.

The menu is packed with choices, and the dynamic, friendly waiting staff will be happy to guide you through them. There is even a gluten-free menu.

Sit down in the lounge, and you will be greeted by almost tsarist levels of opulence, from the classically framed, velvet-panelled chairs to the chandeliers suspended from the ceiling. The wall contains a classical painting, with velvet curtains all around.

One room contains a long table for banquet purposes, and the main lounge has round tables to

seat five, and other tables to sit either two or four.

If you want to impress someone on a night out, this is the place to go. It’s crammed full of intriguing talking points, the wine on sale is outstanding, and the menu second-to-none. Although many high-profile lounge clubs in Tallinn have suffered from poor service, that is emphatically not the case here. The staff will look after your every need.

The summer terrace is open and events such as a live screening of the Monaco Grand Prix that took place in May, and concerts by excellent local and international artists take place every week.

It’s great to see this addition to Tallinn’s restaurant scene get good reviews, especially so early on, from some of Europe’s pickiest diners. Take a look at IO so you know what they mean. ■

Keeping with the fish theme, though located a little closer in Tallinn, Kalapala is a seasonal fish restaurant operating right next to Balloon Tallinn. The menu focuses on fresh local and exotic fish, with some vegetarian and meat dishes thrown into the mix. Take a trip in the big balloon and then enjoy a lovely lunch on a sunny day in Tallinn.

It’s almost impossible to keep up with all the new restaurants opening in the bohemian neighbourhood of Kalamaja.

Fabrik offers a Nordic a la carte menu and huge selection of freshly baked cakes and desserts. If that’s not enough, Fabrik is also a wine bar, with a good cocktail list. (Considers itself? This makes out it shouldn’t do. Perhaps “is also a wine bar” might be better)

Tallinn’s only location of this international chain can be found a short distance between the Viru Keskus shopping centre and Stockmann. The buffet-bar gets its name from cellist Nikolay Peregoudov.

The selection of hot and cold beverages starts with homemade lemonade, which is prepared with sea buckthorn and blueberries.

Different coffees and teas and a large assortment of alcoholic beverages will surprise you with their price. A pot of tea for two is only 2.

The pies, which are always made fresh daily, are the reason to visit Nikolay. The selection of salty and sweet pies is seemingly endless. The daily menu can change daily from time to time, but the most popular pies like salmon, or curd cheese with cherry are always on the menu.

The pie is filled with a salmon.

The curd cheese pie with cherry is both juicy and tasty.

Besides the pies, you can also order soups, salads, and dumplings.. The clientele of mainly older ladies can be seen enjoying coffee or tea.

Pies can be eaten in the café, where one piece costs 1.50 to 2.50. A one-kilo pie costs 12.

Flags on the beach

Pirita – everyone’s favourite Tallinn’s most popular beach is Pirita, which stretches for 2.5 km.

Thousands of people flock to its shores on a warm summer’s day.

Pirita is also known for its nearby open air attractions, like the National Botanical Gardens and the Pirita riverside area.

The beach flies a blue flag, this means clean water and quality service. For the beach to receive such a flag, water quality tests, natural reserves, services and security must be looked at.

Pirita’s services are many: on the beach you will find changing cabins, beach chair rent and many places to eat. This favourite beach is about six kilometres from the city centre. It’s easy to get there with busses 1A and 8. There is ample car parking. You can even walk to Pirita from the city centre or ride a bike along the seaside path.

Pikakari – the pearl of northern Tallinn Built in 2007, Pikakari beach has become increasingly popular in recent years. This beach, in the northern part of the city, offers superb views of Tallinn. The sandy beach near Catherine’s breakwa-

Different coloured flags are used on Estonia’s beaches to signify safe swimming. A green flag means it’s safe to swim. The yellow flag means that swimming is not recommended, but one can swim at their own risk. A red flag means that swimming is prohibited due to tall waves. Up-to-date information reagrding the flags and and temperature of the sea can be found on the website: ilm.ee/rannailm.

train station will get you to Pikakari. There is a car park next to the beach that can fill up quickly on a hot summer day.

Stroomi – games & playgrounds Stroomi beach (also known as Pelgurand) is between Kopli and Rocca al Mare is a popular place to take a walk. In the evenings you will see people out walking their dogs, playing beach volleyball, and jogging. The surrounding grassy areas of the beach as a lovely place for a picnic. The water quality at Stroomi is not as high as at Pikakari and Pirita though the water is still suitable for swimming.

There are many services at Stroomi: you can rent sun loungers and pedal cars, changing cabins, a beautiful playground, a cafe, and outdoor gym. Ride along

one of Tallinn’s best bicycle trails to Stroomi beach from Rocca al Mare. Buses 3, 40, and 48 will also get you to the beach.

Kakumäe – small and close to nature Another of Tallinn's best beaches is at the tip of Käkumäe Cape, about 15 kilometres from the city centre. This is a great swimming spot in an idyllic area filled with small green houses. There are changing cabins, WC, a playground, kiosk, and playing field.

Käkumäe beach is but a short drive from the Open Air Museum at Rocca al Mare. The easiest way to get to the beach is by car or bicycle.

Harku – a lake in the middle of the city Another of Tallinn's official swimming beaches is on the shores of a lake. Despite once having a bad reputation for water quality, Harku Lake is still a favourite on hot summer days. There are lots of activities nearby on the playing field and at the Wakepark. You will also find changing cabins, WC, and playgrounds.

The beach is located close to Rocca al Mare shopping centre, and it’s easy to get there with public transport - busses 16, 22, 27, 36, 46, and trolley bus number 6. ■

allinn is quite quiet in the summer, thanks to the number of Estonians who make a beeline for the countryside, but that means the capital is perfect for discovery by tourists. We’ve got plenty of tips to make your time in Tallinn a great one, and indeed there are many intriguing venues you can try that will be happy to see you. We’ve chosen two oft-overlooked gems, and a new night venue that should get your attention.

Koht Lai 8, Tallinn Old Town G1

Koht, meaning “place”, is one of those hidden nightspots the locals won’t tell you about, because it’s their little secret. But you ought to find out about it for yourself, because it’s amazing. The little bar, set into an old stone house on the Old Town’s Lai street, has several rooms, a main bar room linked to two cavernous function rooms.

Resolutely anti-corporate, the bar even resists branding, with some younger locals referring to Koht as “Moonshine” - indeed, the naming convention depends on who you are talking to. The landlady is legendary, as is the welcome you will receive from the many people who have made this their home-from-home.

Should it get too warm inside, or should there be no more perches on which to rest your weary feet, there is a compact yard outside, with hanging baskets and a feeling of being in the Old Town, but far from the madding crowd.

The best thing, though, is the selection of beer – everything from local brew to Belgian classics can be found here. Make sure you pay a visit.

Katuse Kohvik Viru 13/15, Tallinn Old Town H3

Katuse Kohvik, or Rooftop Cafe, is a place that often gets ignored, unfairly, as it is great for a party at night. To get to the bar, you need to go down into the lift of a shopping precinct, then go up to the fourth floor. When there, you will see that this is a hidden paradise.

What’s good about Katuse Kohvik? It has the trappings of a luxury lounge, with two patios on which it is possible to smoke, it has a ready supply of water pipes and flavoured tobacco, but it also has long, long sofas where you can drape yourself after a tough day at the office. Also, the dedicated staff actually know how to make a good mojito.

There aren’t many genuine chillout venues in Tallinn that serve the purpose well, but Katuse Kohvik has been doing it for years, and continues to do a great job, especially after a renovation that brought it up to the high interior standards of bars all over the Old Town. I have never been ashamed to bring anyone, whether family or friends, to this place.

For reasons owing to the cultural makeup of Tallinn city, Katuse Kohvik attracts many ethnicRussian customers, however you shouldn’t worry about fitting in, as anything goes here, the staff are lively and friendly, and you will have a great time.

The former Kultuuri Katla Aed has been transformed into PADA, a very similar venue, but given a fresh green lick of paint and a new approach. When under its previous management, the garden seemed to have a rebel-

lious edge, with the buildings little changed from the factory outhouses they had been. Now, however, the atmosphere is a lot more corporate and sanitised, which might actually suit some people who found the old style to be overly hipster. However, the bar, which still charges heavily for drinks, seems to have lost some of its previous charm with the hot tub that no longer sits in the corner. Nevertheless, there is a lot of enjoyment to be had here, not least in the outdoor terrace, which features a large timberframed dancefloor. Guest DJs are almost always brilliant at this bar, seeming to understand the customers perfectly.

If you want an outdoor party at a place that is clean, positive and happy, then PADA is definitely a place you should consider. ■ Koht

There are four adventure parks close to Tallinn: in Nõmme, Viimsi, Pirita, and at the zoo.

Nõmme’s adventure park is the oldest. It’s located right next to the sports centre. There are six different courses high up, between the trees where you climb along the ropes. It takes about three hours to go through all the paths.

The Nõmme children’s adventure park is meant for those under 115 centimetres tall. Kids wait for low hanging bridges, swings, and a thrilling ride through the air on a wire and when it’s all done, take a dip in the outdoor pools at the Nõmme Sports Centre.

The Pirita Adventure Park is right near the beach, so expect a stunning view over the sea and of Tallinn. Pirita’s six different tracks run high among the trees, where you make your way through a network of bridges, wires, and platforms with the help of a rope. It takes about three hours to make your way through all six tracks.

Children can enjoy their own park at Pirita where 2-6 year olds can manoeuvre their way along hanging bridges, slides, and swings. Adults can help kids while standing right beside the track.

An adventure park opened in Viimsi a few years ago with five tracks. It takes about an hour and a half to make your way through them. A special feature of this park

Tallinn’s newest adventure park is the one at the zoo.

Young thrill seekers can choose between two children’s paths and a discovery path filled with problemsolving while learning about the animals at the zoo. The children’s paths are meant for 2-7 year olds and are but half a metre from the ground. A combined ticket can be purchased for both the adventure park and zoo. ■

Drive an hour from Tartu and you will reach Mustvee where buses swish past the windows of churches. I have travelled quite a lot though I can’t say I have been everywhere. Now I have had the chance to think about which place everyone must visit and it’s the town where my parents live.

My entire family is from Mustvee. It is a small town with a population of about 1500. Though some might consider it a village, it’s still a town. This small town is on the shores of Peipsi Lake where there are also lots of summer homes. In summer Mustvee turns into a hiker and vacationers paradise and in winter fishermen

gather on the frozen lake. In winter many competitions are organised and in summer there are tons of markets where local residents sell their handicrafts and other interesting things which you won’t find anywhere else.

Some tourists may already know that Mustvee is known for its churches, of which there are four. The shores of Peipsi Lake and Mustvee are full of history. Those interested in history and religion will find many interesting places. Fresh local vegetables, berries, fruit, smoked fish and a large selection of fish dishes and friendly service leave a feeling of home. The sandy beach and warm lake water call visitors back year after year. Welcome to Mustvee! ■

Did you know that Põltsamaa was the capital of Livonia from 1570-1578? Today Põltsamaa is town in central Estonia between Tallinn and Tartu. The population is about 5000. Estonia’s third largest river, Põltsamaa River (135 km) runs through the town centre. The first blue-black-white Estonian flag was sewn in Põltsamaa which was later consecrated in Otepää for the Estonian Students’ Association.

A city with many names. Põltsamaa has been called the wine capital of Estonia and wine can be tasted in the historical courtyard of the castle. Visit the food museum beside the medieval castle where you can familiarise yourself with what food was served twenty years ago to the cosmonauts.

Visit the Põltsamaa Niguliste Church that was built in 1272 next to the river. The castle beside the church was once the King

of Livonia’s residence. The castle courtyard also houses the gallery pART, a ceramics workshop, handicraft workshops, and journalism museum.

Põltsamaa is also known for its beautiful bridges: there are 18 white bridges altogether. On a sunny day why not take a walk over all of them.

The green heart of Põltsamaa is where about 2000 roses grow. This is where Põltsamaa gets its third name, the Rose Capital.

The largest rose nursery of the Baltics is in Põltsamaa, which is also among the ten biggest in Europe. There are about 1000 different roses at the nursery. They are beautiful for both young and old.

For those that like speed there is also a go-karttrack which is definitely worth a visit. The track is 850 metres long and many think it’s the best in Estonia.

Kiek in de Kök and the Bastion Tunnels The Kiek in de Kök tower is the entrance to historical underground bastion tunnels.

In Soviet times they were supposed to serve as bomb shelters and protect the communist elite in case of a war. Kiek in de Kök means “look into the kitchen” in Low German, as this was one of the main things soldiers spent their time doing while on the lookout for intruders. Kiek in de Kök dates back to the 15th century. The tower is 38 metres tall, and the walls are four metres thick.

St Olaf’s Church (Oleviste kirik) Climb the stairs of the St Olaf Church and you will discover not only the lower town beneath, but also the magnificent palaces facing the slopes of Toompea Hill, and the upper town. The old town of Tallinn is divided into a lower and upper part. The lower town was inhabited by hanseatic traders and the upper town, or Toompea, was inhabited by nobility. Katariina käik Blink and you might miss this narrow passageway off of Vene.

Built in 1246, St. Catherine's Monastery (Püha Katariina klooster) is the oldest building in Tallinn. This passageway is also known as the Latin Quarter of Tallinn, and where you can find one of Tallinn’s first Italian restaurants.

KGB Museum A fascinating museum about Soviet history in Estonia is located on the top floor of the Viru Hotel. The hotel rooms were under KGB surveillance. The rooms were equipped with microphones, and small holes were made in the walls, where cameras could be placed to take pictures of hotel guests.

The museum is only accessible by guided tour. Tours run daily and are held in English, Finnish, Russian, and Estonian. English tours fill up quickly so bookings are recommended. Viru väljak 4, Tallinn B2.

Toompea Castle The Tall Hermann Tower (15th century) on the southwest corner of the hill, and the blue, black, and white Estonian flag signify independence and freedom for Estonians. Today, Toompea is the centre of Estonian government and the Riigikogu (parliament). Look for the pink building behind the Russian Orthodox Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral. Tallinn B1.

Paks Margareeta Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) is the most important fortification tower in Tallinn. She was built in the early 1500s. The diameter of the tower is 25 metres and the walls are up to 6.5 metres thick! She was constructed to protect Tallinn from intruders from the sea. Fat Margaret is often the main entrance gate and first encounter for visitors to the Old Town in Tallinn, if arriving by sea.

Kadriorg Park is the area that houses the Presidential Palace (Presidendi kantselei) and the Kadriorg Palace (Kadrioru loss), and the KUMU Art Museum. (All located on Weizenbergi). Kadriorg means Catherine’s Valley in Estonian, and dates back to the 18th century.

Pirita is an area located a short distance to the east of the city centre and offers a variety of things to see and do. Start by visiting the ruins of St Birgitta’s Convent ruins (Pirita klooster) whose colourful history dates back to the 15th century. A stroll through the ruins and the surrounds, including the small cemetery, is a moving reminder of the past. Its proximity to the Pirita River and the beach makes it perfect as part of a day excursion. The 2km long beach can attract up to 30,000 visitors a day in

Patarei Prison gives an eerie glimpse into gloomy Soviet era prison life. For a small entrance fee you can take a self-guided tour through the dark halls of this old sea fortress that has served as barracks, and then as a prison during Soviet times.

The construction is architecturally unique since it was the largest armoured concrete ceiling in the world at the time of construction.

This summer the Museum of Estonian Architecture takes a look at a fascinating part of Estonian history. Life in a manor house was one of luxury and elegance and the exhibit Estonian Manor Houses: Splendour, Forever Lost gives the visitor a glimpse into this life.

The exhibit looks at both the lives of the estate owners and the servants who worked in them.

It is displayed with photographs and furniture from various manor houses across Estonia. The exhibit starts in the foyer where life-sized pictures of manor house owners and servants are displayed. Follow the stairs up to the Great Hall of the museum where different

interiors have been installed, like a salon, sitting room, great hall, porch, and cabinet.

“A typical manor house would have had 20 rooms, 200 pieces of furniture, more than 100 paintings, and porcelain, silverware, chandeliers, carpets, and candlesticks”, according to curator Mati Raal.

The exhibit also looks at the decline of manor house culture.

In 1905, 10 of all the manors in Estonia were burned, then in 1919 the dispossession process of the manors continued until the last owners left in 1939, marking the end of this fascinating era.

Estonian Manor Houses: Splendour, Forever Lost runs from 20 June to 30 August and can be seen on the second floor of the museum. ■

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Tallinn’s public transport system consists of trams, buses, and trolleys. All three use the same ticketing system. In 2013, a smartcard ticketing system was introduced. If you plan on using public transport more than three times, this is your best option. Smartcards can be purchased and topped up at R-Kiosks and are transferrable. The Tallinn Card also allows you to use public transport for free.

Driving in Estonia No international driver’s licence is required to drive in Estonia, but the following rules apply to all drivers: ■ Blood alcohol level must be zero.

■ Estonia has no motorways per say. Please mind intersections and cyclists.

■ The speed limit is most often 50km/h in towns, but can vary between 30-70km/h depending on the area. Speed limits will be posted. Outside of cities and towns the speed limit is 90km/h and 110km/h on dual carriageways.

■ All cars must carry a warning triangle, wheel chocks, a first aid kit, and fire extinguisher. Drivers must wear fluorescent vests when stopped at night.

■ In case of collision, please call the police. Insurance documents and driver information should be exchanged.

■ Please pay parking and speed fines to avoid penalty.

Parking in Tallinn can be confusing.

There are public paid areas as well as private parking lots. The first 15 minutes of parking is free , if the driver is using a parking clock or written notice stating the start time – placed visibly on the windscreen of the vehicle. This does not apply to privately owned off-street car parks.
